ummer is here with a vengeance after our superb ‘winter’ period which lasted so long and which gave us endless days of wonderful golfing weather. What a difference a few weeks makes. I was in Australia (winter there!) for two and half weeks and came back this morning to what felt like a furnace…well, it certainly seems like that after temperatures of 10 – 16 degrees. Anyway, life goes on and so does golf it seems as I saw quite a lot of people out on the course today, even in the mid-day sun. (Before anyone remarks, the weather is of course a favourite British topic of conversation!) Australia was a great trip, especially since we were there as supporters of the Great Britain and Ireland Lions tour which we won 2-1 with everything hinging on the final match. What a fantastic performance by the Lions in the final which they won 41-16; there was a superb atmosphere in the stadium too, as well as at post-match venues. Well done the Lions!

Along the way, we met up with a few past EGC members…. Julie Browning in Melbourne and Lynn and Paul Turner, Gerry Feerick, Simon and Denny Nesbitt Pat O’Flynn in Sydney, as well as meeting up with Dubai residents, Barney and his Dad, Scott, Micky Brigg and Tonje, Alistair and Fiona Munro. Isn’t it great that the many friendships we make at EGC go on for many years, even when people l - r- Lynn, Scott (Barney’s Dad). Jacqui, Barney, Tom, Tonje, Micky, leave EGC – it really is a very special Paul at Watson’s Bay, Sydney place.

Our season has more or less finished with just a few summer competitions remaining so this is the final issue of Club Life until October. I do hope you have enjoyed the members’ magazine each month; please feel free to submit any material you think would be interesting for other members to read. I will be running my annual feature ‘Where in the World’ in the October issue. Wherever you travel this summer, please let me have a photo or two (on or off golf courses) as I will be putting together a few pages of photos of where our members have travelled over the summer. Please email your photos any time over the next two months to barrydxb@eim.ae. I would like to make a special mention to the IHP staff (In-House Publishing) for all their ‘behind the scenes’ work that they do, especially with ‘Club Life’ and the ladies’ newsletter ‘Chipping In’. Thank you Ganesh and Eugene for all your help and patience – it’s such a pleasure to work with you and I really appreciate what you do. Congratulations to outgoing Captains. Moshe Kohli and Glynis Hendry - it was certainly a fun year and you deserve a good holiday. Incoming Captains, Dick Purchase and Barbara Head officially start on September 1st along with incoming ViceCaptains, Kamal Kosta and Mitsuko Emmerson and I’m sure they will be looking forward to the season ahead. Congratulations to Andrew Whitelaw who has been promoted to General Manager, to Barney Coleman who was recently promoted to Director of Golf and Pansy Gonsalvez who became Senior Sales Manager. Adele Cowgill who will become Head of Sales and Marketing. Wherever you are heading this summer, have a great time (don’t forget to send me your photos!) and see you again at the start of the season. The Mixed Season Opener is 4th October! Happy holidays

We had the end-of-season Scramble which was very well attended. I must take the opportunity to thank my playing partners Jenny and Josie for their indulgence with my nine-year old son, Baraj Singh Kohli, who played his first golf tournament ever. For me it was a day filled with great emotion as I always love to see parents play with their children and it took me back to fond memories when my father took me around the course. So the mission now is to get the three generations on course soon.

Joyful June was a wonderful month as the weather gods have been kind and we have had decent golfing weather. The Staff and Members’ Scramble was a fun day and it was great to play with junior staff who keep our Club in such great condition their golfing skills are good too, to the delight of all of us. Barney and Steen put together a great show which we all enjoyed.

my nephew Gurjit for all his support of events in terms of sponsorship, Mukesh for all the rice sent after one phone call, and of course my very dear Ramesh for all the Pro-Am slots and hospitality for all my friends which he spoils me with at DLM and ODDC. I have a huge number of people to thank for their immense support this season but this list is endless, and no words or names are enough….all the known and unknown soldiers. I appreciate each and every one of you.

MASHREQ MEDAL

Philippine Independence Day Golf Invitational 2013 he Faldo Course at Emirates Golf Club was the venue for 80 golfers of diverse nationalities competing for the CB&I 5th Philippine Independence Day Golf Invitational. Consul General Frank Cimafranca led the ceremonial tee, slicing the fairway with a 220-yard drive. The best net score went to Tony Norstrom with 35 Stableford points playing off a handicap of 15 from a 7/8 handicap allowance. n the first of two Medals hosting members from both Emirates Golf Club and Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club, it was Dubai Creek member Patrick Morrow and Emirates Golf Club member Tim Evans who had the best scores of the day. Patrick Morrow (DCGYC) carded a fine 2 under par 70 around the Majlis course to take both the A division (H’cap 0-14) and the overall best net prize of the day. His 70 was matched by no less than seven other players so card playoffs were the order of the day and it took a net inward half of 32 for Patrick to shine through! The runners-up spot in A division was secured by Emirates Golf Club member Vipen Sethi also with a 70. His net inward half of 33 was one clear of third spot which was taken by Stephen Jones (EGC). Tim Evans of Emirates Golf Club shot a fabulous level par 72 to take the best gross prize. In B Division (H’cap 16-34) Dubai Creek members prevailed. Kuttan Malattiri and Thakur Tolani both equaled the best of the day 70 but it was Kuttan who took the division winner’s spot and Thakur the runners-up spot with third place going to Shaun Owens with a net 73.

Yassin Clinches Ping Emirates Summer Open Widened approach right of the first

R

amsey Yassin, representing Jumeirah Golf Estates, carded a level par 72 over the famous Majlis course to triumph in the Ping Emirates Summer Open. The plus one handicapper picked up birdies on the 3rd and 9th holes but a double bogey on the short 2nd saw him out in level par. His back nine was extremely consistent with a birdie on the par five tenth cancelled out by a bogey on the 16th. He clinched the prestigious title by one shot from Rayhan Thomas. Emirates Golf Club was well represented with Charlie Stricklin clinching third place with a gross 76. The net category was keenly contested by the 77 strong field, inspired by the Open Championship from Murifield. Andrew Whitelaw, from Emirates Golf Club, signed for the best net of the day a 5-under par 67 to clinch handicap division B (Handicap 14-28). James Taplin, representing title sponsors Ping, carded a net 68 to secure runners-up place in Division B. As Ping kindly sponsored all tournament prizes he offered up his Ping golf bag to Brian Shepherd who carded a 73. Handicap Division A (handicap 0-13) saw a trio of players card a one over par 73. Aaron Smith (Emirates Golf Club) took top prize following the card count-back with Dhruv Nair in second.

S

ummer is the time that the team at GCM gets particularly busy with our annual renovation work on the courses. This includes the hollow-coring of all surfaces and any additional project work scheduled for the year. A quick breakdown of the project works for this summer include the following:

Course Con

ach widened on left side ehind bunker complex

7

Faldo

Majlis

1. Fill in the rocks to the right of the first green and create a bail-out area mown to approach height. The fill material is on site and works will commence within the first week of August

1. We will be doing specific aerification works on greens surfaces focusing on getting the extensions to blend. In terms of mowing heights and ball-roll this is achieved, however we need to get consistent organic matter throughout the profile so that all areas are seamless going into the season ahead.

2. Remove the fairway bunker to the left of the 4th creating a wider landing area. With a bunker hazard and water hazard on the right, this will create more space off the tee. 3. Fill in the fairway bunker in the layup area on the 5th hole giving the golfer more choice of club and an apportunity to lay-up closer to the green. This makes the hole easier to manage. Work is already underway. 4. Improve overall green-speed and ball-roll on the greens. This has been achieved with the introduction of evening cuts for night golf but most importantly by managing daily soil moisture levels and fertility so that the greens remain a lot leaner and therefore create much better ball roll. This is proving very successful to date and will continue throughout the season. 5. Continue with the introduction of native fire grasses around tee complexes to improve our sustainability throughout the golf course. Holes completed to date are 2, 8, 10 and 17. We plan to continue around tee complexes throughout the summer. This is an ongoing project that will take 3 - 4 years to complete. 6. Our usual aerification works on all surfaces throughout the summer to manage surfaces and firmness throughout the golf course. The Faldo is a great test of golf and we are continuing with plans to improve the overall playability and easiness of the course. This year is Phase 1 of improvements (making it easier) and we will continue over the next few seasons to complete all the changes.

2. We are doing very aggressive works on fairways and approaches to firm them up. This involves vertical mowing and hollow-core aeration as well as very low mowing heights as a tool to minimise thatch. 3. New approaches are again being introduced. Widening of the 1st on the right Opening up around the bunker on the 2nd Mowing up to bunker edges on the 3rd Extending the green back of the 4th Opening up to the right of the 6th greenside bunker with a new approach back right Widening approach right of 7th and introducing new extended approach left of 7th up and behind the greenside bunkers Creating infinity bunkers on 10th and 11th where ball roll off Greens edge is flush with the bunkers Extending an approach cut all around the 11th green complex Widen front bunker on 13th greenside towards fairway cut Extendimg approach cut up the left of 13th bunker Cuttimg new edge on greenside bunker left of 14th. 4. Level and re-surface 7th top tee 5. Our usual core aerification programme on all other surfaces. Greens core program has been adjusted from previous years all in aid of improving organic matter and enhancing surfaces even further for the season ahead. 6. Extensive tree pruning exercise throughout the property

I trust you will all enjoy the changes once you return from your annual summer vacation. The team is hard at work to ensure all the work is completed in time for another busy golfing season ahead. We trust you will enjoy your holidays and golfing wherever it is you may be. Craig Haldane Director - Golf Course Maintenance

J

une 19, 2013: Two auctions staged at the worldrenowned Emirates Golf Club and Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, have raised £16,950 for the Seve Ballesteros Foundation, operator Dubai Golf has announced.

Following the auctions, Dubai Golf announced £16,950 would be donated to the Seve Ballesteros Foundation, a charity established by the iconic golfer in 2009, in partnership with Cancer Research, to fund pioneering, life-saving research into brain tumours.

As part of the many celebratory events to mark the 25th anniversary of Emirates Golf Club and the 20th anniversary of Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club, Dubai Golf hosted two charity auctions featuring some incredible items, including:

Jools Tait, Director of Partnerships at Cancer Research, said: “On behalf of the Seve Ballesteros Foundation, I can’t thank Dubai Golf enough. We continue to work towards a day when all cancers can be cured and achieve Seve’s vision for his foundation. Funds raised by Dubai Golf, through the generosity of its members, will make a real difference in helping us achieve our goal.”

Well done to all Emirates Golf Club staff who took part in a morning’s clean-up drive around the Club. It was a great team effort with great results.

Condolences Our thoughts are with Nancy Wingate and her daughter Nicole, after the sudden death of Gordon last month in Malaysia. Gordon and past Captain Nancy were stalwart members of Emirates Golf Club and supported many of the golf and social events at the Club. Gordon retired last year and moved with Nancy to Malaysia where they quickly made friends and became involved in the local golf scene. We offer our sincere condolences to Nancy and Nicole at this very sad time.

One of the World’s Leading High-Tech Fitness Devices Comes to Dubai Miha Bodytech is now available at Fit Lab

A

cutting-edge device used for weight loss, athletic ability and for healing sports injuries

Miha Bodytech is one of the world’s leading fitness devices and is now available at EGC’s Fit Lab This state-of-the-art work out machine can be used individually or alongside any other type of training, with Fit Lab’s expert personal trainers running each work-out session for you. Each programme can be tailored to an individual’s needs including weight loss, muscle strengthening, metabolism stimulation, body relaxation and back pain reduction. These programmes can reduce body fat and size, assist in muscle formation, increase metabolism, develop a tight and toned body, reduce cellulite, strengthen pelvic floor muscles for post-natal rehabilitation, quicken speed, increase

endurance and improve body posture and muscular imbalances. “Miha Bodytech is an exciting new development in the fitness world. Unlike other gym equipment it can be tailored to work on an individual’s problem areas from the start. It is great for those on the go – a 20-minute session is a lot easier to fit into a hectic day but still gives you results. Within 6-13 weeks you should achieve your fitness goals as outlined by one of our expert personal trainers,” said Peter Sullivan at Fit Lab. An adjustable electrode vest is worn during the work-out session which works on the principle of ‘electrical muscle stimulation’ which

sends electrical stimuli into deep muscle fibres. The session activates muscle stimulation during movement with the device, giving a free range of static and dynamic movements and increased effectiveness. The electrodes send the stimuli to all body parts including arms, chest, back, abdomen, hips, buttocks and legs giving a full body work out. A session of 20 minutes groups muscles simultaneously as it works and the muscles work at 85 contractions per second on each of the 10 muscle groups. The workout is equivalent to 1-2 hours of conventional weight training as it recruits up to 95% of deep muscle fibres. 2-3 of these 20-minute sessions a week is enough to see results! Miha Bodytech sessions are available for members and guests. For bookings and further information contact Fit Lab at Emirates Golf Club on +971 4 417 9850 or email egcfitlab@dubaigolf.com

Introducing Helen Boland to the Bespoke Wellness Team

S

ince graduating with BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy from the University of Liverpool in 2009, Helen has gained broad experience working for the NHS in the UK and American Hospital Dubai. Having a keen interest in sports, Helen has previously worked with a Rugby team in the UK, as well as her local Gaelic football team in Ireland. Having a great interest in Pilates, this lead her to complete the first level of the renowned APPI Pilates course, which is extremely beneficial in the treatment of back pain, and strengthening the core stability for various other Musculoskeletal conditions. The Bespoke Wellness services are available at both Emirates Golf Club and Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club. Planning on jetting off to cooler climates like the majority of Dubai this summer? Well before you step aboard your long haul flight, here are a few helpful tips to prevent your body from stiffening up! - Aim to get up out of your seat every twenty minutes to keep your joints moving and to boost your circulation. - Pop a small rolled towel/cushion at the base of your spine to give you some lumbar support and help correct loading through your spine. - Make use of a travel neck pillow to avoid unwanted aches as you drift off. - Sit tall; rotate your neck to each side, holding for 5 seconds on each side. Stretch your neck side to side, again holding for 5 seconds on each side Shrug your shoulders up as far as you can, hold for 5 seconds and release Repeat each 5 times, regularly, to keep your joints and tissues mobile - March feet on the spot 10-15 times Rotate ankles briskly 10-15 times Repeat both regularly, again for joint mobility, as well as DVT prevention Who said travelling had to be a pain in the neck?
