very cricket fan has, at one stage or another, taken part in the ageold fantasy XI debate. From the best-ever World XI to the current best World XI, cricket fans have always dreamed of who would make it into their elite team. The only downside to these reveries of sporting escapism is that they are in essence unfulfillable dreams. The inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL) six years ago has started to turn those quixotic dreams into a liveable reality. The very best in the world, regardless of their price tag, ego, nationality or time zone, are all squeezed into teams that would give any side from any era a good

Should the IPL ever rebrand itself, Fantasy wouldn’t be an overepithet.

Khalid Al Zarooni, President Dubai Sports City

With the Indian general elections once again being scheduled for the same month as the competition, the Pepsi IPL 2014 needed to find a new temporary home. And the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai Sports City (DSC) has been elected to host some of the greatest IPL match-ups in history, making it the UAE’s theatre of dreams this April. Khalid Al Zarooni, President of DSC is very excited about this development. “The staging of the Pepsi IPL 2014 matches is certainly a source of great pride for the UAE and all of us at DSC because of the profile of the tournament. And it is a

the future then that would be fantastic. Staging these IPL matches opens up possibilities like that.” One of the world’s leading cricketers, retired Australian legend and former Kings XI Punjab captain Adam Gilchrist says that not only is the IPL a vital vehicle for cricket’s ambition to drive the sport around the world into new markets, but Dubai also happens to be a perfect fit for the multimilliondollar annual competition. “It’s a brilliant and very important product for cricket to have to maintain its health long into the future. From a commercial perspective [T20 and the IPL] are vitally important for the growth of the game around the world. It’s a great opportunity for cricket to spread its message and brand.” The IPL has evolved rapidly into cricket’s most hyped Bollywood-style carnival loved by millions of fans all over the world.

perfect fit for the Dubai International Stadium because the venue has staged more Twenty20 Internationals than anywhere else in the world, which is an incredible achievement given it has only been open for five years, and the fact that it is based in an ICC Associate Member cricket-playing country. This is an illustration that we have got things right here at DSC because it means people — players, officials, teams and spectators — want to keep coming back and playing in and watching matches at our venue. The hosting of IPL matches really is a continuation of what has been our biggest season of cricket action since Dubai International Stadium opened its gates in 2009. Since October we have staged Test, One-Day International and Twenty20 International matches involv-

ing Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka, as well as matches in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier and the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, not only at the stadium but also at the ICC Academy’s two full-sized ovals,” he says. Al Zarooni adds that the global profile of the IPL will ensure that DSC enters into the consciousness of more and more cricket fans around the world and that will also open the possibility of securing even more fans to the game both locally and in this region. “One of the few senior international teams we are yet to host is India, and so this IPL will serve as a window, into our venue and facilities, to a large number of Indian cricket fans. We believe and expect they will like what they see and if that means Indian matches in

The high demand for the world’s top players ensured higher prices in the annual auction, which has seen players including West Indian gianthitting Chris Gayle, the leading run scorer in T20 history, Brendon McCullum and arguably the greatest T20 bowler of alltime, Lasith Malinga, don the colours of IPL teams and entertain the millions of viewers that clamour to get to stadiums and television sets to watch the action unfold. The inaugural 2008 IPL set the tone for successive editions of the cricket extravaganza. Initially, a total of $588 million (Dh2.1 billion) was spent by Indian investors on creating eight franchises of the brand. The auction purse in 2008 was $5 million. In 2011, it was $9 million. And this year, teams had

The first final was one of the most dramatic in IPL history. Shane Warne’s Rajasthan Royals (RR) beat the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by three wickets, with Sohail Tanvir hitting the winning run off the very last ball of the match and competition. Sporting euphoria, drama and all-round entertainment like this had never been seen before. The last final saw long-time underachievers Mumbai Indians (MI), inspired by Kieron Pollard’s 60 from 32 balls and Malinga’s expert bowling at the death, defeat CSK by 23 runs. In the past six editions of the competition, there have been five different winners, highlighting the competition’s exciting dynamism. An epic finish

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), after its venue inspections accorded high praise to the facilities and pitches in three UAE venues commenting that they were of worldclass standards. Sunil Gavaskar, Interim President, BCCI-IPL, said at a pre-tournament press conference in Dubai that any concerns he had regarding the suitability of the UAE as a host have been allayed by the pitches and training facilities available at the three grounds hosting the UAE leg of this year’s IPL. “If you don’t have good testlevel pitches, you will not get good cricket, so that was my initial concern. But the wickets here are in excellent condition. “I have spent a lot of time over the years in this wonderful country and it is great to see the buzz being generated prior to a tournament of this magnitude here.” When it comes to preparing the playing surface at Dubai International Stadium, Head Curator at DSC, Tony Hemming, says he and his team will aim to produce a

wicket that offers optimal batting conditions, in keeping with the IPL’s entertainment factor. “We will have the pitches prepared so it is great for T20 cricket and good scores. We want the ball to have good bounce and carry. “T20 is about entertainment — posting, and having a big score chased down, so you want the pitch to be the same [for both teams involved],” says Hemming. In terms of the sporting events DSC has hosted, the IPL is probably the biggest to date, explains Maqbul Dudhia, General Manager – Sports Business, DSC.
“There is no doubt that one of the most incredible venues to catch all the T20 action is Dubai International Stadium. It’s bowl shape retains and resonates with all the sounds and music, creating a high-octane charged atmosphere. Add to this the fact that there is not a bad seat in the house, and its unique Ring of Fire floodlighting and you have absolute magic. We will see the Indian stars of today and tomorrow — Dhoni, Kohli and Raina— mixing with the likes of Gayle, Steyn, Watson and so many more. “This will be the first time that India’s stars will play at the Dubai International Stadium. On behalf of DSC and the cricketing public of the UAE we thank the BCCI and the IPL Governing Council for bringing this event here,” says Dudhia.

The 25,000-capacity Ring of Fire, is set to host arguably the biggest showcase in the IPL’s 2014 calendar: Royal Challengers Bangalore vs. Mumbai Indians. This venue has quickly emerged as one of the finest mixed-use international arenas in the world, having hosted the most T20I cricket matches in the world together with a number of Test ODI series between Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, England and South Africa. The key architectural and aesthetic feature of Dubai International Stadium is the 365 lights fixed to the circumference of the stadium’s roof (which is where the name comes from). The arrangement of the lights minimises the shadows on playing surface, reducing interference with players’ vision on the field for day/night fixtures. The luxe levels for broadcast surpass international standards. Besides its unique cricketing paraphernalia, the stadium’s plush and spacious hospitality ameni-

8

ties unseen to the average spectator are also in a league of their own. The stadium’s facilities include Grandstand seating with Platinum and Premium seating, VIP areas, corporate boxes, sports functional rooms, state-of-the-art facilities for media, event management and meeting spaces, operational control and security services, practice facilties and more. The Royal Box, with its capacity for 100 and balcony seating of 60, directly above the sight screens, offers an unbeatable view over the bowler’s arm as well as panoramic visuals of the pitch. The exclusivity of the smooth mahogany wood and cream leather setting, replete with a range of plasma screens showing satellite coverage of the on-field action, is unique to Dubai International Stadium. The corporate hospitality section also has exclusive seating areas with great views. For more information:

n May 2004, Abu Dhabi Cricket Club took its place among the global elites of cricketing hosts with the opening of the 17,000-seater Zayed Cricket Stadium. The stadium is ideally located to draw in capacity crowds and host sports and other events. The stadium has hosted some of the world’s biggest cricketing events, including series involving Pakistan, India, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, England, co-hosted ICC Cricket World T2O Qualifiers and the ICC Under19 Cricket World Cup.

pened in 1982, the Sharjah stadium has gone on to host the most ODI matches in the world. Between 1984 and 2003 the ground hosted 198 ODIs and four Tests, attracting good crowds, mainly from the area’s large Asian expat population. The stadium initially started with a few limited seats but by 2002 had a 27,000 capacity and floodlights. The stadium has a Diamond box and corporate boxes that offer great views of the arena. It also includes Chairman Suite, a 16-seater area in a prime viewing location over the bowler’s arm with exclusive access and a fine dining lounge.

C

lad in canary yellow, the Kings are a formidable outfit having won the IPL twice already and reached the final for four years running. Under the astute guidance of India’s captain, MS Dhoni, and the flamboyance and belligerence of Suresh Raina and Brendon McCullum at the top of the order, CSK will inevitably be in with a great shot at lifting the Pepsi trophy for a record third time, after a barren two years.

Y

et another Kiwi with the ability to tear bowling attacks apart, Taylor’s outstanding IPL record of 958 runs in 51 matches at a strike rate of 125, is evidence in itself that the bullish right-hander is one of the very best in the T20 format of the game. His greatest strength is secured by scoring heavily from the pull and from slog-sweeping the spinners, along with his free-flowing game. Taylor’s skills have also won him the affection of fans in India. Corbis

he prince of Caribbean cool is one of the most aggressive all-rounders in the world. Bravo seems to have a penchant for lighting up the IPL with his magic. He’s the seventh-highest wicket taker in the competition’s history with 79 wickets at 23, and he’s not too far down the list of top run scorers with 960 runs at a strike rate of 125, all of which have come within 73 matches.

E

ngland’s loss is Delhi’s gain. Having the outlandish talent of Kevin Pietersen as their captain could well be the inspiration the Daredevils need to claim their first IPL title. Third-place finishes in 2009 and 2012 show they have the firepower to mix with the best, but have simply lacked that magic edge over opponents in recent years. Things could pick up for them this time around.

T

he left-hander’s IPL record speaks for itself — 1,903 runs at an average of 44 and a strike rate of 133 in 50 matches is staggering. Especially considering Marsh’s stop-start international career. Marsh, generally considered one of the most gifted top-order batsmen in Australia, is considered cricketing royalty in Australia, with both his legendary father Geoff and brother Mitch having played for the national side. IPL spectators can expect to be royally entertained when Marsh takes the crease for KXIP.

F

ollowing the joyous success of their 2012 win, KKR slumped to a miserable seventh place last year. The defending champs struggled to put team performances together — star West Indies spinner Sunil Narine got little bowling support as Aussie quick James Pattinson was ruled out with a last-minute abdominal injury. With a host of worldclass purchases coming into the fold this year, look out for a much improved KKR outfit. Overseas player to watch: Jacques Kallis (South Africa)

O

ne of the true legends of the game, South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis may have retired from international cricket, but that’s all the better for KKR who will be able to cash in on the ample reserves of talent the 38-year-old still has to offer. His performance as a bowler and fielder are well known and Kallis has an impressive record of 2,276 IPL runs and 61 wickets in 90 games, highlighting the class and skill he exhibits consistently.

F

or the third season in a row, KXIP finished last year — with 16 points in sixth — painfully close to a place in the qualifiers. This year, the team has a new look. With Australian legend Adam Gilchrist stepping down from his stint with KXIP, current Aussie T20 skipper George Bailey has stepped in. With the big backing of Mitchell Johnson and the finisher David Miller this year, KXIP could emerge the dark horse this season.

he Sri Lankan paceman is the highest wicket taker in IPL history, with 103 victims in just 73 games. The Slinger’s average 17.9 is remarkable. he Royals have become the IPL’s great defenders. In matches when they’ve batted first and scored 149 or more, they’ve won 16 times and lost only twice. Their win-loss ratio of eight is the best in IPL, by far (16-2). Expect to see the same tactic of batting first, piling on big totals and defending shrewdly, holding them in good stead this year. Overseas player to watch: Steve Smith (Australia)

T

he Aussie all-rounder has found his feet on the international stage over the last year, scoring centuries against England and South Africa at will in the Test arena. Previously regarded as somewhat of a T20 specialist, he has gained the extra discipline and experience that will serve him well in making a big impression at this year’s IPL. here is no one more feared in T20 than the ever-smiling and oft Gangnam-style dancing Chris Gayle. The towering West Indian’s imperious IPL record of 2,512 runs in just 59 games at an average of 52 at an incredible strike rate of 160 says everything you need to know about the left-hander’s ability to tear any bowling attack apart.

R

etaining South African paceman Dale Steyn and Shikar Dhawan this year is a huge boost for the team. The franchise, formed last year from the former brand, is still finding its feet. The Australian opening duo of David Warner and Aaron Finch could be all the ammunition SRH needs to return to the form the previous brand managed to find in their triumphant 2009 season. Overseas player to watch: Dale Steyn (South Africa)

T

he $1.2-million South African firebrand is rated among the best bowlers in the world right now. His consistent performances with the ball (and the bat when needed) make him an invaluable asset to any team. Seventy-eight wickets in 69 IPL games at an average of 21 is a good return by any standards in any form of the game, let alone in the big hitting IPL. Steyn could be the spark SRH needs to ignite a real shot at the trophy. ©BCCI

P

ossibly the most unlikely of all teams not to have won the tournament so far, RCB have power and panache in abundance. Bowling has often been their weak point, but with Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan in their squad, they should perform much better. With their decision to splash big cash on Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh in this year’s auction, they can’t complain if their bowling doesn’t stand up again this year.

am absolutely delighted at the thought of the IPL being held in the UAE. More so because the BCCI is now under the leadership of a real pro and spotlessly clean professional — the legendary Little Master, Sunil Gavaskar. I will most certainly attend, and look forward to the festivities that are integral to IPL 20/20. And more than looking forward to a particular team playing, I look forward to some superb performances and want to soak in the overall ambience of the matches.

T

he UAE is a generous and welcoming host nation, with three outstanding venues and an abundance of cricket-crazy fans. Add to that the proximity to India and you have all the right ingredients that make it the ideal location for IPL matches. As for attending all the matches, this may not be possible but I will get my fair share of viewing. King’s XI Punjab with the Nawab of Najafgarh and ultimate T20 run-machine Virender Sehwag is my personal favourite. And with Sehwag’s recent century in Abu Dhabi, I believe we are in for fireworks.

T

he IPL is the world’s most popular T20 tournament and the hosting of the first leg of such an important competition speaks volumes of the world-class infrastructure that is in place at all three venues in the UAE: Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah. It also says a lot about the tremendous faith the BCCI has in the readiness and ability of the Emirates Cricket Board to deliver a tournament of the highest order. My family and I are cricket enthusiasts, and time permitting, we will try to watch every match being played in the UAE — and more importantly, the ones involving the Mumbai Indians..

love cricket and will try and attend as many matches as possible. I feel the UAE is a fantastic place to host the IPL as a significant Asian population resides here. The IPL is a brilliant mix of cricket and other entertaining events, and this also makes it a great time for the entire family. I will not be supporting any team in particular, since most of the cricketers I am fond of play for various teams. My support will therefore keep shifting based on how each of them is performing in their respective teams. I am just going to enjoy the spirit of competitiveness and fun.
