Yearbook
WELCOME 30 years supporting entrepreneurship Dublin BIC was established in 1988 and last year passed the 30-year landmark. The entrepreneurial landscape has changed dramatically in that timeframe and indeed Ireland itself is a very different place. In the years 1988/89 the net outward migration was a cumulative 80,000 people leaving these shores and unemployment was over 16%. This was the tapestry under which Dublin BIC was established with support from the EU, Dublin Chamber of Commerce and the private sector. Its role was to help entrepreneurs create businesses and jobs. In the years 2017/18 the net inward migration was 55,000 and the economy is near full employment. While times have changed for the better the fundamental need for innovation and start up enterprise remains critical to the success of our economy. Dublin BIC has been deeply embedded in working with the private sector and state bodies to provide entrepreneurial supports over the last 30 years. As the current Chairman I commend Dublin BIC and its stakeholders for its ambition, vision and ability to expand its services and remain relevant to the needs of entrepreneurs and the economy – always innovating and never standing still.
Dublin BIC Values ∂ Inspired by entrepreneurship ∂ Authentic, honest and trusted ∂ Collaborative community builders ∂ Enabling & empowering ∂ Resilient & determined ∂ Generous with knowledge, expertise and networks
At Dublin BIC we are proud of who we are and how we contribute. We are proud of the strong community of entrepreneurs, investors, advisors and industry partnerships developed over 30 years. This success is down to our team, our rich domain and technical knowledge, deep involvement in the entrepreneurial ecosystem and significant real-world experience. We have a strong heritage and a clear vision for the future.
On behalf of the Dublin BIC Board, I thank you; our entrepreneurs, our investors, the Department of Business Enterprise and Innovation, Enterprise Ireland, Diageo, Dublin City Council and the European Business Network (EBN) for your continued support and we look forward to working with all stakeholders over the next 30 years! Clive Brownlee Chairman Dublin BIC is a Company Limited by Guarantee. Its operations are governed by the Board of Directors who provide their time on a voluntary basis: Clive Brownlee (Chairman) I Hugh Governey I Jacqueline Hughes Ronan King I Michael Moriarty I David O’Meara I Professor Frank Roche I Teri Smith I Alan O’Driscoll (Co. Secretary)
I
In 2018 we continued to focus on building a talented team internally and strong partnerships externally, both of which have been crucial factors in what has been a year of significant progress and success. The organisational values are reflective of our clients, our staff and our stakeholders. The entrepreneurial journey is both challenging and rewarding. Our team are inspired by entrepreneurship and are determined to deliver the honest guidance and ‘tough love’ required to help nascent entrepreneurs take the pivotal early steps to success. Our core competency is and always has been helping start-ups to ‘start and scale’. This includes providing advisory services via our Dublin BIC Investor Ready Programme, providing funding via our venture and angel funding activities, incubating companies and building the entrepreneurial community via our networking events.

A YEAR IN REVIEW A year of progress
Empowering Entrepreneurs to START & SCALE
As we mark our 30th year at Dublin BIC our mission remains crystal clear ‘To Enable Entrepreneurs to Start & Scale’. It is well recognised that the vast majority of net new jobs in the economy are created by young companies less than five years old. It is the rapidly growing innovative scale-ups from this cohort that are the ultimate engines of economic growth. These companies provide the necessary ‘creative destruction’ to continually reenergise our economy.
