Try out something new this autumn! Join us for workshops, talks, tours and classes as part of Culture Connects @ Richmond Barracks. Culture Connects is our year-round programme that invites people in Dublin to try out new things.

You are welcome to visit us Tuesday to Saturday 10 am to 5 pm, with regular later opening on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. You can take part in one of our many workshops, talks and tours, or simply drop by to visit this historic building, browse in Inchicore Library (also open on Mondays) or enjoy our peaceful garden space.

Biodiversity Walking Tour

Tuesday 29th October, 11 am; duration 90 minutes

Adult ticket €5, children accompanying an adult go free. Take a closer look at the biodiversity of Inchicore with Eco Gardener in Residence, Polly Rowley-Sams. You will learn about the ecology of the locality and discover some unexpected local treasures.

Goldenbridge Cemetery Tour

Join us for a guided walking tour of Ireland’s first garden cemetery, founded by Daniel O’Connell almost 200 years ago, as Ireland’s non-denominational burial ground for any and all religions.

Creating

through

Impressionism

Tuesdays 3rd to 24th September, 6 pm; duration 90 minutes

Join artist Eilish McCarrick and learn painting techniques inspired by the Impressionists, focusing on mood and feeling. Discover tone, colourblending and brush techniques with acrylics or water based paints. These workshops are for adults and no previous experience is needed to take part. The workshops will include a visit to the National Gallery of Ireland on Thursday 19th of September.

Nettle and FlaxEach fibre inspiring 100 stories and 1000 uses Tuesdays 10th and 17th September, 11 am; duration 1 hour

Explore the cultural importance of Nettle and Flax, two versatile Native Irish plants. Join visual artist Niki Collier and Eco Gardener in Residence, Polly Rowley-Sams, for these interactive workshops that will explore fairytales, food, gardening and craft. Be prepared to use all your senses! In workshop 1 you will harvest flax and design your own greeting card. In workshop 2 you will make your own keepsake purse from vintage linen.You can book to come to one workshop or come to them both.

Sing for Fun

Thursdays 12th September to 12th December, 11 am; duration 1 hour

Sing for Fun is for anyone interested in singing as part of a group to feel good. Join our Singing Artist in Residence, Michael McCartan, and learn to sing different songs and do fun vocal warm-ups and exercises. No singing experience needed, just a willingness to take part and enjoy yourself.

There will not be a class on Halloween, Thursday 31st October.

Ukulele for Beginners

Wednesdays 25th September to 30th October, 6 pm; duration 90 minutes

The ukulele is a great starter instrument for anyone who wants to try playing music for the first time. Led by musician Shane McGrath, these ukulele workshops for adults are a relaxed and fun space to try out something new. Each workshop starts with a recap, then you will learn some new chords and try playing a few tunes. You don’t need any previous experience to take part. Ukuleles will be provided or you can bring your own.

Introduction to Pastels

Wednesdays 16th October to 20th November, 6 pm; duration 2 hours

Discover the different techniques and creative possibilities of oil pastels. Led by artist Ailbhe Barrett, you will learn how to draw with pastels and explore the various blending methods and effects that can be achieved. You will also learn about composition and improve your observational skills. These workshops are for adults and are suitable for complete beginners. All materials will be provided.

Native Irish Trees

Saturday 7th December, 11 am; duration 90 minutes

Explore and learn about the native trees of Ireland. Join Eco Gardener in Residence, Polly Rowley-Sams, to find out how to identify different native Irish species and discover the important role they play in supporting biodiversity. Learn how to plant bare root trees and bring one home to plant yourself. This workshop will include a short walk to a local green space. Children aged 7+ are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.

Sustainable Saturdays: Reuse and Repair Social

Saturdays 28th September, 26th October, 30th November and 14th December, 2 pm; duration 90 minutes

Upcycle your old clothes into new treasures! Use your creativity to keep textiles out of landfill, chat and meet new people. This monthly clothes upcycling workshop is led by Change Clothes Crumlin, a community based clothing reuse hub. These workshops are family friendly, children must be accompanied by an adult.

Monthly Supper Clubs at Richmond Barracks

Wednesdays 2nd October, 6th November, 4th December 5 pm to 7 pm

Join us for a supper club on the first Wednesday of the month. A perfect opportunity to enjoy some wholesome hot food before attending one of our workshops or talks, or to drop in for some food and a chat if you’re in the area.

FoodCloud Kitchen will be serving a menu of seasonal food which will include a drink, a main course and a dessert, all for €10. Food will be available from 5 pm with last orders at 6.30 pm.

Dance Delights

Try out different dance styles in a relaxed and friendly environment. Led by Dance Artists in Residence, Philippa Donnellan and Mia DiChiaro, enjoy moving your body, meet new people and have some fun. No prior experience of dance is needed and you can move at your own pace.

History in our lives – Balkan folk dances workshop

Tuesday 1st October, 7 pm; duration 1 hour

Presented as part of Dublin Festival of History, join Slavcho Begov for this practical Balkan folk dance workshop. Learn folk chain dances along with some of the history of the region that gives context to the dances.

Discover dance through film, selected by Dance Artists in Residence, Philippa Donnellan and Mia DiChiaro. Taking place after Dance Delights on the 22nd of October, join us to watch inspiring dance on film and discuss it over a cup of tea.

Dance Delights: New Creative Adventures

Tuesdays 5th November to 17th December, 11 am; duration 90 minutes

Explore dance creatively. Join Dance Artists in Residence, Philippa Donnellan and Mia DiChiaro, for a series of lively movement workshops that will introduce you to simple ways of creating dance. Each week we will warm up to different kinds of music, explore poetry and text to spark ideas and create original choreography. No prior experience of dance is needed and you can move at your own pace.

The Richmond Barracks online book club meets via Zoom on the last Thursday of the month. ‘Water’ by John Boyne

Thursday 26th September, 8 pm; duration 1 hour

The first thing Vanessa Carvin does when she arrives on the island is change her name. To the locals, she is Willow Hale, a solitary outsider escaping Dublin to live a hermetic existence in a small cottage, not a notorious woman on the run from her past. This novella, first in John Boyne’s ‘The Elements’ series, is a compelling exploration of guilt, grief and complicity.

‘The Haunting of Hill House’ by Shirley Jackson

Thursday 31st October, 8 pm; duration 1 hour

Hunting for evidence of the occult, Dr Montague invites three participants to Hill House: Theodora, his lovely assistant; Luke, set to inherit the estate; and Eleanor a fragile young woman with a troubled past. But what begins as a light-hearted experiment swiftly becomes a trip into their darkest nightmares, and an investigation that one of them may not survive. Beautiful, atmospheric and utterly terrifying, ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ is a powerful work of slow-burning psychological horror.

Talking about The Ranch

Wednesday 11th September, 6 pm; duration 1 hour

Dublin City Historian in Residence, Katie Blackwood, will take you through the history of The Ranch, including how it got its name and how many local landmarks are part of its story. Long-term and more recent residents of The Ranch will also be on hand to share their memories of the area and audience members will be welcome to participate.

Tuesdays 10th September to 15th October, 6.30 pm; duration 2 hours

Admission free

Learn how to research your own family history. Join genealogist and historian Dr Declan Brady to find out where to find and how to use both online sources and physical records in existing archives and registries.

Little Crafters

Fridays 27th September to 1st October, 11 am; duration 60 minutes

Join us for a weekly themed craft session for children aged 5 and under and their parent or carer. Each week we will be getting creative, exploring different materials and having some fun! This includes a messy play activity, so wearing less-loved clothes is advised! Children must be accompanied for the duration of the workshop. age 1-5

Trace the roots of Halloween back to the ancient festival of Samhain, listen to spooky stories inspired by local folklore, and find out about the fun games your grandparents might have played at this time of year. We encourage you to come in a Halloween costume, or dressed as a notable figure from history!

In this special meetup of the Children’s History Book Club, we will be joined by author and illustrator Alan Nolan as he brings you on a trip around Dublin’s lost landmarks and creepiest crypts - as featured in his new historical book series, starring the young Molly Malone and Bram Stoker! Presented as part of the Dublin Festival of History.

Hidden Histories Hunt

Follow the trail through Dublin city centre, solving clues and discovering the hidden histories along the way. This self-guided hunt is for children accompanied by a grown up.

Maurice J. Casey explores the forgotten life of Irish translator and journalist May O’Callaghan, who lived in Moscow from 1924 to 1928.

FoodCloud Kitchen showcases how surplus food can be spectacular. They serve hot drinks, tasty snacks and delicious lunch options. Menus are created using seasonal ingredients sourced from FoodCloud’s suppliers and change weekly.

Your Friday meal will greatly benefit vulnerable communities. All profits generated are reinvested into FoodCloud’s core activities, redistributing surplus food to over 600 community and voluntary organisations nationwide.

Inchicore Library at Richmond Barracks

Since August 2020 Richmond Barracks has been home to the Inchicore Library, operated by Dublin City Libraries. The library offers a range of adult fiction and non-fiction material, a selection of young adult material and a junior library. A range of books on Dublin are also available in the library’s Dublin Collection. Items can be reserved online and collected at Inchicore Library. Printing and photocopying facilities are also available.

Join in!

Each month Inchicore Library runs a number of groups that are open for anyone to join.

The Toddler Group meets Wednesday mornings from 10 am - 11 am. Due to its popularity booking is recommended at inchicorelibrary@dublincity.ie.

The Knitting Club meets on Thursdays from 3 pm - 4.30 pm and both experienced knitters and beginners are welcome to join in. It is a drop in event, no booking needed.

The Movie and Book Club meet on the third Monday of the month at 2.15 pm to discuss a book and its film adaptation.

The junior book club for budding readers aged 7-9 meets on the third Tuesday of the month

Library Opening Times

Inchicore Library now has extended self-service opening hours in place. This means the library is accessible to the public from Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm each week.

Library staff will be in the library from 10 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm from Monday to Thursday every week and on alternative Fridays and Saturdays. If you have any questions about this please enquire with library inchicorelibrary@dublincity.ie.
