Sören Link, Mayor of the City of Duisburg
“As a cosmopolitan port city and former Hanseatic city, Duisburg has a long history of making guests feel as welcome as possible. It has been possible to get to this city located near the Rhine and Ruhr via water, railway and roads for a long time now. This is not only due to trade, but also to the friendliness of the people. Find out for yourself and discover the joie de vivre and cosmopolitan feel of the city in which hospitality really still is genuine.” Welcome!

INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE – FASCINATION AND EXPERIENCES
The spectacular Tiger & Turtle sculpture stands resplendent on a former spoil heap. It is a favourite for photographers from all over the world. Duisburg’s Inner Harbour became an area filled with offices and cult cafes and restaurants, making it the perfect spot to take a stroll le t r u T and a popular location Tiger & for miles around. And whilst heavy industry previously covered the banks of the Rhine, the sandy beach of the RheinPark with a view of the ships passing by is now an inviting sunbathing spot. The Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord offers music festivals, open air cinema, diving, climbing and much more. It would be impossible to list all the events and activities on offer at the park here. What’s certain is that the Landschaftspark is one of the region’s most popular attractions. There is an amphitheatre which is off the beaten track and can be found at the northern edge of the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord. You can have chilled BBQ parties here, even with larger groups. You’ll need to bring the BBQ, music and drinks along yourself.

> I ND USTRI A L HERI TAGE I N D UI SB URG: NOTHI NG L I KE “OL D I RON”! Former manufacturing sites have been imaginatively transformed and are now unique monuments to industrial heritage that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Former factory sites now offer sport, cultural and leisure activities in an interesting atmosphere. Repurposed industrial halls create a unique backdrop for trade fairs and conferences. Former grain warehouses now house inviting restaurants and art of international importance. > D I D YOU KNOW ? Duisburg is still an important location in the steel industry nowadays. A third of the crude steel produced in Germany and around half of the raw iron is manufactured in Duisburg.
The Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord draws in over 1 million visitors a year. The British newspaper “The Guardian” calls it one of the most beautiful parks in the world.

Despite the many bridges, crossing the Rhine on a ferry can still be a truly romantic experience nowadays. The ferry goes between Duisburg-Walsum and the idyllic spot of Orsoy in the Lower Rhine, which is part of Rheinberg.
W AT E R WATER – THE LIFEBLOOD OF THE CITY
Duisburg was founded over a thousand years ago as a settlement near to the Rhine and Ruhr. And water in all its forms is still an ever-present part of the city today: Right behind the Duisburg city hall, the banks of the Inner Harbour provide an inviting place to take a stroll. Restaurants and bistros are housed in former storage buildings here. You can find a spot to relax surrounded by idyllic nature at Sechs-Seen-Platte, which is surrounded by dense for‑ est. Canoeing, water skiing and dragon boat rides are just some of the activities on offer at Duisburg Sportpark. The Regatta Course there is where canoeing world championships and other international competitions are held. There is also a great children’s playground here. At Wasserwelt Wedau, children are allowed to splash around in the water as much as they want!
> D I D YOU KNOW ? There are quite a lot of bridges in Duisburg. With a current count of 650, brückenweb.de believes there to be even more bridges in Duisburg than Venice, which boasts 426 bridges. And more than Paris with its 336 bridges.
> W H E R E T HE S EAGULLS FO LLOW T H E SHI PS Duisburg is one of the cities with the most water in Germany. Numerous lakes, canals and harbours are characteristic of the city’s image. Duisburg has an international reputation as a key logistics hub. Each year, twenty thousand ships enter the world’s largest inland port in the Rhine and Ruhr region. But water in Duisburg isn’t just about transport, but is also something that offers relaxation and quality of life. Essential for sport and leisure.

There is a high-quality collection of modern art at Museum Küppersmühle, which showcases works by Anselm Kiefer and Gerhard Richter. The history of the city of Duisburg, which spans over a thousand years, is documented at the Kulturund Stadthistorisches Museum and the Museum der Deutschen Binnenschifffahrt, which is located in a former Jugendstil swimming pool, also shows a key side of Duisburg’s history. > E X P LO R I N G A ES T H ET IC S AT EV ER Y T URN Both the art museums and historical museums in the city of the sculptor Wilhelm Lehmbruck and the cartographer Gerhard Mercator enjoy an excellent reputation. LIFESTYLE LIFESTYLE – THE QUALITY OF URBAN LIFE Duisburg is one of the cities which has gone against all the trends and maintained a vibrant city centre. Lots has been done to make it a pleasant place to spend time. Numerous events and markets create a lively city vibe around the wide shopping boulevard of Königstraße, with its beer gardens, Lime tree avenue and Brunnenmeile. In addition to the cultural programme hosted by the theatre and other organisers, there are lots of festivals, markets and events on the streets and squares in Duisburg at various times throughout the year. You can enjoy drinks and snacks here and get to know the sociable nature of the people in Duisburg. Even visitors to the city can get to know people quickly here.

> A GOOD MOOD A ND FRI END LY PEOPL E The Wine Festival, which is held in late summer, is popular far beyond the boundaries of Duisburg. The Ruhrort Port Festival is also always exciting. The “Jazz auf’m Plazz” concert series brings König-Heinrich-Platz to life every month over the summer. The street food and music festivals which are held at various places in the city and different times are totally on-trend. But this is by no means a complete list of the many festivals held in Duisburg. > D I D YOU KNOW ? Folk festivals have a very long history as part of life in the city of Duisburg. The earlies mention of the “Beecker Kirmes” dates back to 1539. The “Kirmes” is still celebrated every year nowadays.

CYCLING CYCLING – SIGHTSEEING ON TWO WHEELS
In Duisburg, there is a large network of popular cycle paths, such as the RuhrtalRadweg, the Rheinradweg, the Route der Industriekultur by bicycle, the radrevier.ruhr and the NiederRheinroute. The importance of the bicycle as a mode of transport has increased greatly in recent years. There are now bike hire stations from a wide range of providers scattered throughout the city and even cycling athletes gather in Duisburg: One of the largest non-stop MTB races in Europe impresses spectators every year at the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord: the 24-hour mountain bike race. However, there are also more relaxed and family-friendly events on offer. The “Duisburger Radwanderung” takes place every year in the spring with varying routes and several thousand participants. And the event started at the end of the 1970s!
