EMILY K CENTER
‘God’s intervention’: Coach K and the Emily K Center By Micah Hurewitz Assistant Blue Zone Editor
Mike Krzyzewski—the face of Duke for over four decades and winningest college basketball coach of all time—has been instrumental in helping craft leaders on the court, but what may possibly be his longest-lasting contribution stretches far beyond the history of the banners in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke men’s basketball’s famed head coach and his lifelong experience with service and leadership helped guide him toward establishing one of Durham’s greatest treasures—the Emily K Center. Named for his mother, the daughter of Polish immigrants, who urged him to attend West Point as a first-generation college Courtesy of Emily K Center/Eric Atkinson Photography student, the Center sprouted from an idea to Coach K founded the Emily K Center in 2006 as a place to give educational opportunities to a platform for making children’s educational kids who have been historically underrepresented in higher education. dreams come true. “Sixteen years now, thousands of kids, Krzyzewski recalls McBriar suggesting that mother,’” Krzyzewski recalled McBriar saying just a great, great thing,” Krzyzewski told The “we need a community center for that area,” to to him. “And that was the hook. And [McBriar] Chronicle. “Really God’s intervention there.” knew that I would do that and we would make It was by no means an instantaneous process, which he responded, “Well, I’ll try to help.” The idea did not take off initially as it work.” but the concept was close to Krzyzewski’s heart Krzyzewski was concerned over a lack of At that point, Krzyzewski was set to be the in more ways than one. funding and plans had to be reconsidered. But founder and executive chair of what would ‘We would make it work’ then, McBriar came back to his parishioner become the Emily K Center. Father David McBriar, the Franciscan with the idea that it be named for his late It still took nearly 10 years before the pastor at the Immaculate Conception Church, mother Emily, who had died at age 84 that Center opened its doors to the first students, pioneered the push for a community center September and pointed Krzyzewski to college but “if some folks had simply tried to start the in Durham’s Burch Avenue neighborhood. ‘Their second home’
At the time of the 2006 opening of the Center next to the church at the corner of South Buchanan and West Chapel Hill Boulevards, only 38 students were enrolled in programming. “It was a lot of intentional growth, thinking about what will come next, so as our students in elementary and middle school started to get older, it became logical to start the high school program. As our high school students started to graduate from high school, it became logical to start a college program,” Askey said. The timeline matches up—the Scholars to College high school program began in 2008 and the Scholars on Campus college program launched four years later. While it did ultimately take some time to get to where it is now, the Center’s development over time has shown a continued effort to follow through on the commitment to helping support Durham’s children from elementary school to college. Now, the Emily K Center has over 100 volunteers annually that support the growth of over 2,000 Durham County students. “The happiness of a youngster and his family coming into the center for instruction— for help,” Krzyzewski said of what stands out to him the most. “It’s kind of like they call it their See EMILY K CENTER on Page 20

COACH K MEMORIES
Messages from the Duke faithful to Coach K By Sasha Richie Blue Zone Editor
Adahli Massey, a 51-year-old from Auburn, Ala., recalls seeing Duke men’s basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski in the last pew of a church in the mid-90s. Unlike the grandiose words most commonly used to describe Krzyzewski throughout his farewell tour this year—”greatest,” “winningest,” etc.—Massey describes Krzyzewski as “very humble, devoted.” The legendary figure of “Coach K” may seem larger than life to most, but through his 42 years in Durham, fans have also come to know him in a different way through interactions and impressions both small and large. To understand just how many people he’s touched in his tenure at Duke, I asked the Duke Basketball Facebook group for stories and thoughts they had about Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils. From personalized letters to little league quips to private reflections, here is what Duke fans all over the country had to say, edited for length and clarity.
‘Great big heart’
Many fans wanted to express their gratitude for Krzyzewski and the program’s kindness over the years. Hildy Savell, whose two younger sons went to Duke, first fell in love with the Blue Devils while visiting campus in 2011 with her elder son Evan, who graduated in 2016. The two snuck into Cameron Indoor Stadium through a side door and saw Krzyzewski speaking, and “[Evan’s] mouth was hitting the floor,” the 59-year-old Long Island, N.Y. native said in a
phone call. “Maybe it’s because of my love for [Evan],” Savell reflected, searching for why she felt so instantly connected to the team, and why she kept watching on her own. “Maybe it made me feel closer to the boys.” In 2016, right after her youngest son Ryan started at Duke, Savell was diagnosed with breast cancer, and she was struck by how the team supported Debbie Jones, the mother of Duke players Tyus and Tre Jones, through her own battle with breast cancer. As a surprise in his senior year, Ryan worked with a manager friend of his to organize a meeting between Savell and Debbie Jones after a game. “I just thought to hold the love in that family is really so wonderful…. She was lovely. We discussed more than boys, discussed our health and she had just had a good scan, and it was just more like a mother meeting. And it was great. It was like one of the most meaningful things that happened to me there.” For Savell, the Blue Devils and Krzyzewski are so special because of their “kinship” and “spirit,” and 70-year-old Riegelwood, N.C., resident Donna Graham Hammond echoed that sentiment in a message submission. Hammond’s granddaughter Sophia was diagnosed with cancer in Nov. 2019 and was in the UNC Health System. Sophia and her father often watched Duke football, so when the North Carolina football team came to visit her, Sophia, “wouldn’t say much but she whispered to her mama, ‘Is that Duke?’,” Hammond writes. Hammond reached out to Krzyzewski with the story, and a little later, a package from him with autographed pictures and a note of encouragement arrived, “an invaluable

keepsake for this Duke family.” Now that Sophia is cancer-free, Hammond writes, “Coach K is the best coach with a great big heart. Thank you Coach K and LGD!” Meanwhile, 67-year-old Karen Russum from Chestertown, Md., who has been an avid Duke fan “since Wojo was there,” said that she met Krzyzewski in Las Vegas, where they chatted about their grandchildren and how wonderful it is to be grandparents. A while later, Russum was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and her friend reached out to Krzyzewski as a surprise to cheer Russum up. “I went through the mail and there was this envelope from Duke…I opened it up and just busted out crying…[Krzyzewski] sent me a poster and he wrote, ‘We’re all behind you and stay strong and go Duke,’ and it was just inspiration,” Russum said.
‘Midwest values’ Other fans wanted to reminisce on personal connections. Former basketball coach George Scholz, who turns 70 in April, always admired Krzyzewski. He described former West Point head coach Bobby Knight’s “Let’s Play Defense” pamphlet as being his bible when Scholz first started coaching. But then, as Krzyzewski rose through the ranks, Scholz said he “learned and studied” how Krzyzewski ran his program. “Any article I read about Coach K or what he did, how he coached—that went up on our [locker room] bulletin board if it was appropriate, and it was highlighted,” Scholz said. More than Krzyzewski the coach, though, Scholz, along with his wife Lynne, admires Krzyzewski the man. Having met Krzyzewski a few times over the years, Scholz said, “I felt like Coach K just absolutely was a Chicago guy, Midwest values. A great person and a great family man…There was never a note or letter or favor that I contacted Coach K [about] that he didn’t get back to me with a personal note written by himself.” There was no time when those values were on greater display than the 37-year span that Krzyzewski saved a seat for Steve Mitchell, who had Down syndrome, directly behind him at his invitation. Mitchell, who died in 2017 at the age of 63, began sitting behind Krzyzewski in 1980 and the two would shake hands before every home game. See K AND COMMUNITY on Page 22

TICKET PRICES
How expensive is a ticket to Coach K’s last home game? By Max Rego Sports Managing Editor
By Alex Jackson Sports Features Editor
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and for Duke’s upcoming game against North Carolina, a ticket is worth nearly $75,000. Next Saturday’s rematch between Duke and North Carolina will have a singular focus. Mike Krzyzewski’s career will be celebrated throughout the night, even forcing the basketball side of things to take a backseat. What’s making this ticket one of the hottest commodities in the entire world of sports? Well, this game is no typical game. It is the game of many “lasts.” For starters, it is the last regular-season game of Krzyzewski’s illustrious career. It is also his last game in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Coach K Court— there was a 50-50 shot of those two events lining up and Duke fans lucked out that Krzyzewski chose a year where Duke is the host of the final game. Additionally, it is the last regular-season (and possibly final) installment of one of the most storied rivalries in sports with Krzyzewski at the helm. That will make it an extremely emotional evening. “I think it’ll be intensely emotional, and he’ll do his best to manage it and keep it away from the players, but it’ll be inescapable,” ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas said on The Rich Eisen Show last week. But what about those who show up to take in the spectacle? Cameron Indoor Stadium will be filled to the brim with undergraduates, graduate students, former players and the general public,
each of whom will be attending a game that is quite the tough ticket. Some, including season-ticket holder David Lees, Trinity ‘90, are well-versed in all things Cameron Indoor. “We’ve been season-ticket holders probably for five years now. I’ve been going to games dating back to 1990. I graduated in 1990 and they had not won a championship, so it took me to leave for them to get their first,” Lees told The Chronicle. Lees, whose son graduated from Duke last fall, made the trip from his hometown of Philadelphia for endless amounts of Blue Devil home games in recent seasons. Despite the constant travel, it was well worth it. “It’s been an unbelievable journey, throughout the years,” Lees said. “To be able to experience it, and have Coach K, who I think is kind of the GOAT of GOATs not only on the court but off, be part of our lives for so long has been a gift.” Lees will not be alone Saturday, as 9,313 others will venture to Durham for the latest installment of the Tobacco Road rivalry. But assuredly not without challenges. As of right now, the cheapest ticket, which gives you one seat in Section 12 of the Upper Level, is currently going for $3,000 on StubHub, with the most expensive being a mind-boggling $75,000. The average ticket price on TickPick is currently over $5,000, per Front Office Sports. That is the highest average price for a basketball game— college or pro—on the site since at least 2019, ahead of two other Duke-North Carolina matchups and two NBA Finals games. Just for reference, over three years ago, when the top-ranked Blue Devils—featuring the exhilirating quartet of Zion Williamson, RJ Barrett, Cam Reddish and Tre Jones—hosted the eighth-ranked
of supply and demand.” Many tickets are given to family members of players and staff on both teams, higher-ups at Duke and special invitees. Season-ticket holders grab another large portion of the available seats. But getting a single game ticket as a fan is like finding the golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, except with an all-time historic game on the other side of the gates. “People are paying Super Bowl because they know it will be a special atmosphere,” Leyden said. Generally, men’s college basketball typically Abigail Bromberger | Staff Photographer doesn’t draw crowds like Duke-North Carolina Cameron Indoor Stadium tickets costed games do. THROUGH THE YEARS
Changes in the world since Coach K’s first year By Glen Morgenstern Associate Sports Editor
How has the world changed since Coach K took over Duke men’s basketball? Eight United States presidents. Five PlayStation consoles. The Harlem Shake. Mike Krzyzewski has seen them all during his tenure as head coach at Duke. Since Coach K’s introduction to Durham in 1980, the world has evolved at a rapid pace. Krzyzewski’s retirement this April offers a moment for reflection on how the U.S.—and the rest of the globe—have transformed in the last 42 years. Please enjoy this very-good, totally-comprehensive, error-free list of ways the world has changed since Coach K came to Duke.
the White House, one of whom had their tenure end with an armed insurrection. That period also saw four “The Tonight Show” hosts in “30 Rock,” including one who was booted out by a corporate insurrection allowed by his predecessor to regain power. Justice for Conan! Speaking of power, Krzyzewski always led the Blue Devils to high positions in the AP Top 25. He spent 127 weeks at the top of the poll, the most of all time. But did you know Coach K was here in Durham for the first U.S. News & World Report university rankings in 1983, in which Duke was ranked sixth in the country? Now, Duke has slipped to No. 9. That number looks the same flipped upside down, though … at least I think so. Maybe they had a point.
Nuggets of wisdom
Enough silliness. It’s time to talk about the most meaningful changes to the world since Coach K took the reins at Duke—the food. Krzyzewski was at Duke when McDonald’s first introduced the McRib in 1981 and when it popularized chicken nuggets in 1983. He was still there to witness McDonald’s lose the Chicken Sandwich War in embarrassing fashion. On the more sophisticated side, the Cronut was invented in 2013 at a New York bakery. The decadent confection formed from croissant dough was quickly deemed a delicious waste of money. It soon cemented itself as a favorite of hipsters and out-oftouch food critics alike. An unsustainable business model may doom the Cronut to the garbage heap of history, where I imagine raccoons will experience a culinary renaissance of their own. Perhaps the greatest kitchen innovation in Krzyzewski’s tenure came in 1981. The Duke head coach experienced the beauty of microwave popcorn when it hit the shelves for the first time in Coach K’s first season.
Race era, cell phones have become two pounds lighter and holograms are no longer just the stuff of science fiction. We have failed to learn from our mistakes during Coach K’s tenure in general. After embarrassing themselves during the Y2K fiasco, conspiracy theorists went all-in on an apocalyptic Mayan prophecy that didn’t exist. Flat-earth theory is seeing another heyday around the world, thanks in part to one certain former Duke basketball player … ahem, Kyrie. And perhaps worst of all, just when we thought we were finally rid of them, mullets have swung back into fashion. May Coach K save all of our hair.
YOU’VE SPENT 30 YEARS BUILDING YOUR NEST EGG. NOW COMES THE HARD PART: MAKING IT LAST ANOTHER 30.
Putting the K in K-pop
Krzyzewski began his tenure during the musical reign of Michael Jackson and the new Pepsi Generation. In Coach K’s third season, Jackson released the best-selling global album of all time in “Thriller.” But by the end of the King of Cameron’s run, the King of Pop had died in less than favorable circumstances. As Krzyzewski says goodbye to Duke, he’ll enter a world that has said “Annyeonghaseyo” to BTS using their Internet platform to take over the music industry. Who knows, the 75-year-old Krzyzewski might dive deeper into the digital world in retirement—perhaps creating a public Twitter account or learning how to pronounce “Fortnite” correctly.
Star Wars
Krzyzewski may have been eating popcorn piping hot from the microwave when watching “The Two Popes,” or during the announcement of the three popes that have served during the tenure of the Catholic head coach. Or maybe sci-fi is more Krzyzewski’s speed. After all, he has been Duke’s head coach for all but one Star Wars movie as well Eleanor Mackey | Staff Photographer as the announcement of Ronald Reagan’s Star Wars A lot has changed throughout the years, but defense initiative in 1983. Coach K has been a constant on the Blue Power rankings Speaking of Reagan, Krzyzewski was around Coach K’s tenure saw eight U.S. presidents in Devil sideline. to see the end of the Cold War. Since the Space
K’s constant
For all that the world has changed, much has remained constant since Krzyzewski took the reins of the program. Certainly, the head coach has smoothed out the Duke experience in his 42 years on campus. Coach K and the success of the Blue Devils have remained a given. Dryers still catch fire regularly in Duke dorms, sometimes where players live. And students look forward to sacrificing their $10,000-peryear climate-controlled rooms to live in a tent for two months in the winter so they can see the North Carolina game. Some things in the world outside the Duke bubble have not changed all that much since the beginning of Krzyzewski’s stint as a Blue Devil head coach. The Cleveland Browns still haven’t won a Super Bowl in the Coach K era. Wall Street continues to catch breaks. And Carolina still hasn’t gone to hell—at least, not yet. But maybe that’s a good thing.

EARLY ACC
The early days of Coach K in the ACC Georgia Tech-Duke games from about ‘85 to the early ‘90s were some of the elite games in the history of this league,” said Krzyzewski. “And Bobby was “You guys don’t mind if every once in a while I not only a great coach but he—Bobby is genuine.” reminisce, right?” Today, with the vast majority of Krzyzewski’s In the moments after Duke’s hard-fought career behind him, it’s easy to forget the beginnings January win against Georgia Tech, head coach Mike that preceded the five-time national champion’s Krzyzewski walked to the podium and said that to legacy. It’s easy to overlook the trials it took for him the media. In his opening statement, Krzyzewski to become the winningest head coach in college readily admitted the game’s “exhausting” nature— basketball history—that first national title came after all, the Blue Devils were just returning from more than 30 years ago, after all—but that wasn’t a 12-day COVID-19 pause that cost them much always the case. of the holiday break, and it took a great deal So, like Krzyzewski on that January night, let’s of intensity for them to overcome a plucky yet take a moment to reminisce. overmatched Yellow Jackets team. Duke most always gets its opponents’ best ‘A sensational year’ shot in Cameron Indoor Stadium, and in the final Krzyzewski had just turned 33 when he became season of Krzyzewski’s career, that has remained the head coach at Duke. Chronicle claimed Duke and Georgia Tech to be “inexorably linked” by their star recruiting classes: the Yellow Jackets had star guard Mark Price and big man John Salley, who in the years prior, had proven worthy opponents for their Blue Devil counterparts. The two sides really were a perfect match, splitting their 10 meetings in the four years leading up to that moment. Duke, though, got the last laugh, squeaking by in the title game 68-67 to give Krzyzewski his first conference tournament championship. That year, the Blue Devils would go on to make their first Final Four under Krzyzewski before
eventually falling short in the title game against Louisville. By year’s end, they had compiled a then-NCAA-record 37 wins, and Krzyzewski had established himself as much more than just Duke’s young head coach. “To say it was a sensational year may be a little mild,” said Krzyzewski after the loss in the national championship. “We won the in-season NIT, the [ACC] regular-season title, the ACC tournament and set a record for wins. How could it be anything but sensational?” While Cremins and Krzyzewski would remain worthy adversaries well into the next decade, Duke’s vindictive win at that year’s ACC tournament pushed its young coach past one of his first true obstacles. In one sensational swoop, Krzyzewski had distinguished himself and his program, laying the foundation for decades more of unprecedented winning.
The new standard
When it comes to ACC basketball, though, no look down memory lane is complete without Dean Smith. In those early years, with Krzyzewski coming up in the conference alongside Cremins and N.C. State’s charismatic Jim Valvano, Smith—North Carolina’s long-established and respected head coach—and his program were the league’s gold standard, a dynamic captured beautifully in John Feinstein’s “The Legends Club.” The Tar Heels were perennial contenders, and their coach was a proven winner. Smith was the benchmark, and Krzyzewski See EARLY ACC on Page 20

THE BEGINNING OF THE END
Coach K reflects on his career By Jake C. Piazza Sports Editor
This article was originally published June 3, 2021 after Krzyzewski’s retirement press conference. “Michael, always be with good people.” Head coach Mike Krzyzewski’s mother told him those six words while he was in high school, and 1,170 wins and five national titles later, he’s still following her advice. Yet, neither of those accomplishments are what Krzyzewski is most proud of. In Krzyzewski’s Thursday afternoon press conference in Cameron Indoor Stadium, he addressed a room packed with friends, family, media and current members of this year’s team. Front and center in that room were the same people that have been front and center throughout his entire career: his family. “Well the thing I’m most proud of is right there—what a family,” Krzyzewski said, pointing toward his family in the front row. Krzyzewski touched on many topics throughout the press conference, including the fact that a big reason for his retirement is to spend more of his time with his family instead of spending it on the endless hours of preparation required to coach college basketball. “I always felt that you would know when to stop if you weren’t ready to do all the things necessary to do what you do,” Krzyzewski said. “You have to do a lot of things before you do what you do—never been a question.

Krzyzewski addressed a room full of media members, friends and family to officially tell the world that he would be retiring after the 2021-22 season. I’m older, and we’ve both felt that I’m not sure I’m ready to prepare.... I want to use some of the things that I have to prepare for, that time, with [my family].” That being said, the Hall of Famer made it clear that he has plenty left in the tank to finish this last season and he will be fully invested in his squad. “I’m not gonna be anticipatory about any events or anything like that. I want to coach my team. I want to give them 100%,” Krzyzewski said. “Because of [my retirement after next season], I won’t be on the road recruiting like I would normally so I can spend even more time with them. I want this to be as good a basketball team as we’ve had
in my 46 years and that’s the main thing I’m gonna focus on.” Throughout the press conference, it ironically became evident that the same reason that Krzyzewski cited as to why it was time for him to retire from coaching was the same reason that he has had continued success for the last 40-plus years atop the college basketball world: family. Bonds. Connections. Relationships. Whatever you want to call it, they’ve been the cornerstone of the coaching philosophy that Krzyzewski has staked his career on. “We don’t live our lives through our grandkids or our daughters and their husbands, but we’re part of their lives. How lucky are we that we’re also able to do that with Jon [Scheyer]

and Chris [Carrawell] and Nolan [Smith] and Nate [James] and Wojo [Steve Wojciechowski] and Shane [Battier] and Grant [Hill] and Jason [Williams] and all—what a life,” Krzyzewski said. “So you have this going all the time and that’s where these guys have come up with The Brotherhood. And that’s an extension really of what we’ve done as a family, so that’s what I’m most proud of and that’ll last well beyond next season. That’ll last forever for me and for Mickie and that’s the coolest thing.” Even as Krzyzewski has gotten into the waning years of his career, the impact on his players has continued to be bigger than just basketball. “He’s really teaching me new things with every word he says and really for me just being able to be a sponge and soak it all in,” junior Wendell Moore Jr. said. “I really wouldn’t want to learn from anybody else besides him.” While Krzyzewski has instilled a sense of Brotherhood and family into the Duke men’s basketball program all the way through this last year, it really all began back in Chicago with what he calls his first opportunity. “I’ve gotten some amazing opportunities. The very first opportunity. God was good. God was really good. He gave me my mom and dad. They were really good,” Krzyzewski said. “What an opportunity, and I’ve had so many opportunities. More than almost anybody I think. But that was a great opportunity to grow up in the Krzyzewski family.” That familial culture Krzyzewski has chosen to instill into the program in his See ANNOUNCEMENT on Page 22

What was Coach K’s best decade at Duke? Mike Krzyzewski has been the head coach of the Duke men’s basketball program for 42 years. 1,430 games and counting. A lifetime of memories. His tenure as a Blue Devil is older than the median age of Americans. Krzyzewski’s time at Duke can really be broken down into the four main decades that he has coached through (sorry 2020Alex Jackson 21 and 2021-22, you didn’t make the cut). The 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s each consisted of great teams and great players, all coached under one man. All four of the decades supplied Duke with unique memories and cemented the program’s legacy as a true Blue Blood. With five national championships, 12 Final Four appearances, 35 NCAA tournament showings, 15 ACC tournament championships and 12 ACC regular-season titles stretched across the 40 years, each of Coach K’s decades could be a great career. But of course, there can only be one “Best Decade” and the others will have to take a back seat. I’ve ranked the decades in order of importance to Duke’s legacy and Coach K’s legacy. Using the program’s performance in the NCAA tournament and the ACC, AP Poll rankings and losing seasons as my criteria, I believe I have created the most accurate assessment of Coach K’s various decades. Disclaimer: For the purpose of this article, any season that began in a given decade will be included in that decade, even if the majority of the season and postseason were played in the next decade.
I would also like to note that I’m thankful for Krzyzewski beginning his Duke career in 1980, making these numbers clean and my job a whole lot easier.

K BEFORE DUKE
Coach K before his days at Duke By Andrew Long Staff Writer
It’s easy to see Coach K’s three Olympic gold medals as head of the national team, five national titles, 1,196 wins and all-star talent he’s cultivated for what they are: great. We know and remember him for his back-to-back NCAA championships in 1991 and 1992, for his assistant coaching role on the historic “Dream Team” and for his domination of the 2010s that saw Duke possess a No. 1 seed and No. 2 seed four times each in March Madness. It’s easy to forget humble beginnings in favor of modern grandeur. Krzyzewski’s early days were certainly humble and a far cry from the immense success he’s seen the last four decades. His upbringing in Chicago by Polish-American parents culminated in admission to Army, where he played as a point

guard for four years under the tutelage of the legendary Bob Knight. His time in West Point, N.Y., wasn’t anything immensely special from a results standpoint, though he captained his senior-year team to fourth place at the 1969 NIT. What was relatively unremarkable on the court was phenomenal in experience, though. Knight is widely regarded as one of college basketball’s finest-ever coaches, sitting fifth in all-time wins largely thanks to an immensely successful tenure at Indiana from 1971-2000. Knight’s teams were, more than anything, renowned for their solid fundamentals, discipline and tenacity. His offensive and mental philosophy was one Krzyzewski would replicate in the decades that followed. Look no further than Duke’s title-winning teams of 1991 and 1992; the Blue Devils were nasty to play against and their can’tquit attitude and eagerness to scrap (looking at you, Christian Laettner) carried Krzyzewski to arguably the most dominant period in college basketball history, which consisted of three national title games, two NCAA championships and four Final Fours in as many years. The relationship between student and mentor may have famously soured in recent years, but the influences of Krzyzewski’s former coach are clear in the identity he’s cultivated in these blue-blood Blue Devils nonetheless. It would be a few years before Knight and Krzyzewski would reunite following the latter’s departure—this time on the sidelines—after his service in the Army. Krzyzewski spent five years in the military as a captain and was honorably discharged in 1974 when he returned to basketball as an assistant on Knight’s coaching staff at Indiana. He was only by Knight’s side for one season, in which the Hoosiers went 31-1, but
soon left for his alma mater to take over the head coach role in West Point. His time at Army’s wheel was unremarkable when compared to the almost superhuman record he’s conducted in Durham. The Black Knights (then the Cadets) went 73-59 in his five years in charge—two of which were losing seasons—and had only a single NIT tournament berth to their name, where the team was knocked out in the opening round. It was perhaps surprising, then, when Krzyzewski was announced as Duke’s new head coach at the start of the 1980 season. The original reaction was not one of awestruck anticipation but of cautious optimism, and his reputation far from preceded him the way it does today. For what it’s worth, the Blue Devils had been largely hot and cold prior to Coach K’s arrival. The program became just the eighth in NCAA history to reach 1,000 wins in 1974, slumped to a 2-10 ACC record in 1977 and rebounded for a conference title and an NCAA tournament final loss to Kentucky. Krzyzewski inherited a post fraught with the highest of highs and lowest of lows, both in recent memory, and was tasked with bringing consistency to a team that, for years, was notoriously inconsistent. Even three years into Coach K’s tenure in Durham, that question still loomed large. The Blue Devils went a combined 38-37 in his first few seasons, possessing just one winning record and a single NIT quarterfinal appearance to their name. This led not only to uncertainty over the program’s future, but to questions about job security for the man the helm. “There was a lot of discontentment around the program, and it was vocal,” former player
Chronicle File Photo
Krzyzewski rose from a questionable hire to the winningest coach of all time. Jay Bilas said of the early Krzyzewski years in a 2015 interview with Yahoo! Sports. “Heck, there was a petition circling around calling for Mike (Krzyzewski) to be fired…there were a lot of people who were really unhappy.” In perhaps the best decision in NCAA history, Duke withstood outside pressure to sack the young Krzyzewski. In return, it was rewarded with a 24-10 record in the 198384 season, including an NCAA Round of 32 appearance and a tie for third place in the ACC. And from there, the rest is history.

Is Coach K bigger than Duke?
On Feb. 20, Duke men’s basketball’s official Twitter account posted a tweet with the following caption: “Coach K has more Duke dubs than all other past Blue Devil coaches combined #GoatFacts.” The photo that accompanied the tweet pointed out that Coach K had amassed 1,120 wins during his Duke career (that number is now up to 1,123) in 42 seasons, compared to 1,117 wins combined for all of the 18 other Blue Devil head coaches across 75 seasons. Statisticians will point out the fact that a season now is nearly twice as long as it was for the first quarter of the 20th century. But the main point of the tweet rings loud and clear, even if nobody from Duke will say it explicitly: When it comes to Duke men’s basketball, Coach K isn’t just bigger than the program. He is the program. And right now, that statement couldn’t be more true. In addition to the stat above, there’s this one: Of all the true blue bloods (Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, Kansas, UCLA and Indiana), the Blue Devils are the only one to win all of their national championships under one head coach. In addition, Krzyzewski’s successor— Jon Scheyer, in case you haven’t heard— played for four years under him and has only coached under him, further cementing the fact that Duke in its current status is a program that will loom under the shadow of Krzyzewski whether he’s the head coach
Evan Kolin
Chronicle File Photo
Coach K won his fifth ring to add another chapter to an already historic career. or not. But it won’t necessarily always be that way. From 1930 to 1972, Adolph Rupp won four NCAA tournament titles at Kentucky before the school’s mandatory retirement age forced him to step down at 70 years old. He led the Wildcats for just as long as Krzyzewski has been in Durham, and at the time of his retirement had been in Lexington longer than the program had been without him. Prior to Rupp, no head coach had been there for more than five consecutive seasons and the school had won only a single regularseason conference championship. Hence, it’s safe to say Rupp was the program.
Not only that, but Rupp’s replacement— Joe B. Hall—both played and coached under Rupp at Kentucky, solidifying the notion that his success would be shadowed under that of his predecessor. Nevertheless, Hall was still able to build his own legacy at Kentucky, making six Elite Eights and bringing home a national championship in 1978. Fast forward all these years later, and I doubt anyone’s still calling Kentucky Rupp’s program, even if the team plays in Rupp Arena. Instead, Kentucky is Kentucky. Yes, that statement is aided by the fact that multiple other head coaches without Rupp ties found success in Lexington. But
there’s no reason to believe Duke can’t also reach that status down the line. Case two: Kansas. From 1919 until 1956, Phog Allen manned the sidelines in Lawrence, Kan., bringing home three national championships and a flurry of conference titles. While the Jayhawks are a slightly different story than Kentucky given that the literal inventor of basketball served as their inaugural head coach (ironically without much success), Allen still retired as the godfather of Kansas basketball. Yet the Jayhawks have remained a blue blood in the decades since, and now— despite playing inside Allen Fieldhouse, a la Kentucky and Rupp—Kansas is Kansas. Of course, there are counterarguments to those two examples. UCLA and Indiana still loom under the shadows of John Wooden and Bob Knight, respectively, with each program struggling to find consistent success since their legendary coaches’ retirements (or controversial firing). So yes, one might read this column as just another “Will Duke be the next Kansas or Indiana?” But my point is this: Right now, Coach K is bigger than Duke men’s basketball. And for a while, it’ll likely stay that way whether Scheyer is successful as the Blue Devils’ head coach or not. However, many believe that even with prolonged success in the postCoach K era the program will forever loom under the silhouette of Krzyzewski, and that simply isn’t true. If Coach K truly built Duke into a blue blood, there will be a day that Krzyzewski fades into the background. There will be a day that Duke is no longer his program. There will be a day that Duke will be Duke.
Thank you, Coach K!

Assistant coaching spots were soon occupied by history. Five national championships, the most of any college basketball coach since 1980. Three former players, a facet of the Blue Devil coaching Olympic gold medals as the head coach of USA staff ever since. Krzyzewski delegated more, he Basketball, honors that as a West Point graduate, relied on a revamped support system more and he might hit home the most for Krzyzewski. You get simply made his job fun again. A quick turnaround the picture. But behind all those accolades, beneath the moments and the memories, there was always one thing about Krzyzewski that stood out the most—change. Just think about when it all began. Two years after athletic director Tom Butters took a chance on an upstart coach from Army, Krzyzewski brought in that vaunted 1982 recruiting class, ready to get the party started. Up to that point, Coach K had lost out in some high-profile battles on the trail, with the strategy of casting as wide a net as possible unable to pull in the guys he needed to recalibrate the program in the right direction. So it was back to the drawing board. Krzyzewski adopted a newer, fresher approach, one that focused Aaron Zhao | Photography Editor on relationships with a select group of talented Coach K shares a hug after Duke’s most prospects. And boy, did that pay off. Weldon recent win against Pittsburgh. Williams, Jay Bilas, Mark Alarie, David Henderson
Max Rego
followed, and the Blue Devils were back to being the “it” program, clinching four straight No. 1 seeds from 1999-2002 and Krzyzewski’s third ring in 2001. Nine years after that third championship— beginning to sense sort of a theme here—the winds of change were once again sweeping through Cameron Indoor Stadium. College basketball recruiting, once an old-school affair featuring letters and living room visits, was now its own industry, defined by Instagram highlight reels and prominent sneaker companies. Plus, more and more blue-chip prospects were leaving school after a single season thanks to ever-changing NBA bylaws. The sport was undergoing its most tectonic shift yet. If you thought Krzyzewski was just going to rest on his laurels during this hectic one-and-done era, think again. Coach K, true to his nature, embraced change one more time. First it was Kyrie Irving, then Austin Rivers and Jabari Parker. No Final Four trips in the four seasons since a gritty 2010 squad survived a Gordon Hayward near-miracle meant more tweaks were on the horizon, though, with Krzyzewski pushing all of his chips into the middle of the freshman roulette. It paid off in a hurry. Duke’s 2015 bunch, led by the trifecta of Jahlil Okafor, Justise Winslow and Tyus Jones, knocked off a hyper-experienced Wisconsin to add one for the thumb. Since then, the Blue Devils have featured lottery picks galore, from Jayson Tatum to Marvin Bagley III to Zion Williamson. Duke may not have added to Krzyzewski’s title total in the years since, but when those teams put it all together—who can forget the four wins in four nights back in 2017, or when Williamson and Barrett took a sledgehammer to Kentucky to open their season with a bang heard around the country?—it sure was a joy to watch.

Coach K directs his players during a 2012 game against North Carolina. From 1986 until now, with few exceptions, Duke has been a championship contender. Not every team looked the same. Some were guardoriented. Others relied on throwing it down to the post and having a big fella go to work. Some played strictly man-to-man, with Blue Devil guards in their opponent’s faces for an agonizing half minute. Others, particularly in recent seasons, trotted out in a 2-3 zone to contain sharpshooters. The playing styles have been endless, and the unpredictability of Krzyzewski’s next move always kept you on your toes. Who knows what will happen in his final season? Maybe Duke will add that coveted sixth title and Krzyzewski rides off into the sunset. Whatever happens, it’s safe to say that Krzyzewski, in line with his first 41 years leading the Blue Devils, will make his 42nd and final season one that features a little bit of adapting. So, I guess change can be a good thing. Just ask Coach K.

EARLY ACC FROM PAGE 8 witnessed that firsthand in a 1984 matchup against the Tar Heels—the nation’s top team led by Michael Jordan—in Cameron Indoor Stadium. After a mid game outburst by Smith at the scorer’s table went unpunished by the officiating crew, Krzyzewski fumed to the media after the game that there was a “double standard that sometimes exists in this league,” noting that Smith seemed to operate under a different set of rules. There were bigger stories that day—fan behavior was the focus as the Blue Devils almost took down the reigning national champions—and Krzyzewski’s postgame comments were relegated to page 13 of that day’s edition of The Chronicle. But all these years later, with Krzyzewski as the clear benchmark in not just ACC basketball, but college basketball, that moment perseveres as a reminder that in order to become an icon of the sport, Krzyzewski had to go head-to-head with one. Of course, Krzyzewski has now won more games than anyone, including Smith. By the time that the Duke coach passed Smith for second all-time with his 880th win, there was no doubt that Krzyzewski was the gold standard of his era, if not something more. “I don’t want to take any of that too seriously, but rather say, ‘I’m one of the guys who’s won a lot of games,’’’ Krzyzewski said after passing Smith. “To share a spotlight with Dean [Smith] and [Bob Knight], that’s a great honor.’
‘The ACC I know’
In one of the final road games of his final season, Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils traveled up to Virginia looking for revenge after a 69-68 loss in Durham two weeks prior. Duke got the job done, winning 65-61 in another chapter of what has become one of the ACC’s most closely-contested rivalries.
“Just another Duke-Virginia game,” said Krzyzewski after the game. To Virginia head coach Tony Bennett—like Pastner and so many others—it was not just another game, but likely the final meeting with Krzyzewski. Bennett took center court just before tipoff to honor Krzyzewski’s “monumental contributions to the basketball world,” presenting the coach with a plaque that Krzyzewski would later joke “weighs about 800 pounds.” “Look, I’m not looking for a farewell tour or anything like that,” Krzyzewski said after the game. “But it is my last year, and if there’s some ways that we can celebrate the brotherhood that’s in the game, that’s a good thing.” A pair of familiar faces sat in the crowd that night. Krzyzewski met with former Virginia head coach Terry Holland, who coached the Cavaliers from 1974-90, and 7-foot-4 Virginia great Ralph Sampson was also in attendance. So, as Krzyzewski reflected on the meaning of Bennett’s pregame gesture, he once again got to reminiscing. This time, he recalled how a TV program on the team bus that day had jogged memories of his earliest days at Duke, going up against the likes of Sampson, Jordan and the rest of the ACC. “It made me think of Terry [Holland] and Dean [Smith],” Krzyzewski said. “My wife, Mickie, and Ann Holland are really close friends, and Ann had texted her last night saying that they would be at the game, and that’s the other camaraderie. You can’t believe the wives of Bobby Cremins and Jimmy Valvano and Dean’s wife, Linnea—they were all friends. “That’s the way it used to be, and so tonight was, to me, I was a little bit emotional about it because that’s the college game and that’s the ACC I know.” No matter how Krzyzewski’s final season comes to a close, he’s sure to leave behind a legacy of camaraderie, especially at the program so fondly referred to as The Brotherhood by all who pass through it. Above all the wins, all the championships, that might be why his legacy is built to last.
Congrats Coach K on an out-of-this world career!

EMILY K CENTER FROM PAGE 3 second home. It’s a place where not only people care about them and want to teach them, it’s a place where people believe in them. And they believe in the outcome of what will happen while they’re there. “In other words, you walk in, you’re going to be successful, you’re going to go to college, we’re going to follow your progress. And it’s going to work. It’s such a great thing. And it happens over and over again.” When the Center hosted a men’s basketball press conference ahead of a team practice, Askey recalled that Krzyzewski made sure to stop by and speak with each table of students as if he had no better place to be than there with the children. His expressed joy about the Center has been beyond clear.
‘Carrying on the work’
Krzyzewski’s upcoming retirement does not mean the coach has to take a step back from the Emily K Center. In fact, recent years have proven the exact opposite. As he aged and retirement loomed in the nearer future, fundraising campaigns for the Center have only picked up. As the population served by the Center continued to grow, Krzyzewski advocated for the development of the physical building and the community. Importantly for Krzyzewski, he knows the mission of the Center is one intrinsically shared by his family. While his first two daughters, Debbie Savarino and Lindy Frasher, hold positions with Duke Athletics and the men’s basketball team, respectively, his youngest daughter Jamie Spatola serves as the vice chair at the Emily K Center and works closely with executive director Adam Eigenrauch. “Who knew decades ago when Emily Krzyzewski was babysitting for Jamie

Krzyzewski, when she visited us as a toddler, that Jamie Krzyzewski would be carrying on the work of grandma Krzyzewski,” Mike Krzyzewski said. In 2016, the Center launched an open-access program called Gameplan: College, which has been able to reach around 1,500 students each year for college and career planning. The Center also recently completed an $18.89 million campaign to fund a 7,500-square-foot addition with new classrooms, community spaces and offices. Still rebounding from holding programming and other events online due to COVID-19, the Center is not shying away from being bold as it looks to the future. “We’re excited to continue to enhance our programs and make sure that we’re serving as many students as we can as well as we can,” Askey said. Notably, Duke men’s basketball announced Feb. 24 that NFT platform OneOf would be partnering with the program for a digital collection from March 3-5, with all proceeds going to the Center. “He will still continue to be involved and we hope that he will have the capacity to be perhaps even more involved moving forward,” Askey said of how Krzyzewski’s retirement from coaching will change his role. Future students at the Center can likely look forward to hearing him speak while they don their college sweatshirts standing alongside him on the Center’s gym floor. That very floor—the same one on which his 2001 national championship team clinched the trophy in Minneapolis—holds special meaning, too. Broadcaster Jim Nantz said that Krzyzewski’s third trophy made him “the proud father of three in more ways than one,” but the Hall of Fame coach holds more than just his children and his trophies close to his heart. When Krzyzewski walks off the court as head coach for the final time this spring, he may be finished calling out plays, but he will still have a community looking up to him as the exemplar of what it is possible to achieve through reaching their fullest academic potential.

(which you would expect to be higher considering their regular season performances). The big withholding to this decade was the infamous missed season. In the 1994-95 year, the Blue Devils entered as the No. 8 team in the country, but after 12 games, Krzyzewski was forced out with back issues. Pete Gaudet took over and coached the Blue Devils to a 4-15 record in his time. They fell out of the rankings and missed the NCAA tournament for the first time in 26 years. Outside of that, Duke and Coach K dominated the ‘90s. The 1991-92 team was perhaps the greatest Duke team ever. Winning every title in sight while only picking up two losses.
Krzyzewski said in an email to The News & Observer after Mitchell’s passing that, “Steve became a good friend…. It always felt good shaking his hand before games because I admired him and was proud of him.” In a phone interview, Candace Black, Mitchell’s sister, said, “The fact that Coach K allowed Steve to do that for 37 years meant a lot to Steve and in turn meant a lot to our family, because when Steve was born in ‘54, the doctor said he wouldn’t live past 30 and he lived to be 63…Coach K meant a lot to Steve and in turn meant a lot to us, and the fact that he is retiring—he’s gonna be missed by so many people.”
No. 1: 2000-2010
NCAA tournament: 2 championships, 1 Final Four loss, 10 total appearances ACC: 7 tournament championships, 3x regular seasons champions AP Poll final ranking: 3x No. 1, 9x in top 10, 9x in top 25 Losing seasons: 0 Best season: (2000-01) 35-4 record, won NCAA championship, AP No. 1, won ACC regular season and tournament Finally, that brings us to No. 1. The crowned decade. Coach K’s magnum opus. The 2000s added a third and fourth national title to the program’s collection, while making a tournament showing every year. Duke finished outside the top 10 in the AP Poll just once in a year where three straight losses prior to the NCAA tournament knocked them out of the top 25. The Blue Devils were poised at the top of the ACC tournament seven times in the decade despite winning the regular season just three times. This decade truly felt like the years where Coach K was most in stride getting the most out of all the talent in his program. The 20-year stretch between this decade and the last made the name “Coach K” and labeled Duke as an all-time great program.

‘Fan since little league baseball’
Still others wanted to share small moments of Krzyzewski that stick out as special even after so many years rooting for the Blue Devils. Kim Reed, one of the founders of Krzyzewskiville, explained that after her and her friends from the Mirecourt dorm camped out multiple days in advance to get center court spots for the North Carolina game, a thousand other students followed suit. Reed and her friends jokingly made a sign for Krzyzewski’s now-eponymous village, and a Duke tradition was born. “[Krzyzewski] didn’t come out specifically to see us, I think because he thought we were just like insane and he’d never seen this before. But he did walk by with Alaa Abdelnaby, a recruit, and we all said hello and waved at him, and he kind of waved back at us with a funny look…I don’t think he thought anything of it. He just thought, there’s a bunch of weird kids,” the 1986 graduate said. Matthew Memrick, a 43-year-old from Charlotte, grew up down the street from Krzyzewski’s house, and he frequently played basketball with the neighborhood kids in
Thanks, Coach K, for your dedication to our students’ success— on and off the court.
Where academic excellence meets student life
Krzyzewski’s driveway. “I also played baseball in the North Durham Little League where one of my first coaches was Joe Alleva,” Memrick wrote in a submission. “Anyway, I made the all-star team one year and K came out (maybe 1988). He did the announcing and he was out calling kids names out as they came up to bat. He called my name out and joked that people could easily get it wrong. I thought that was funny because everyone got his name wrong…[I] have been a Duke fan since little league baseball.” Meanwhile, 69-year-old Doren Madey Pinnell, who received a B.S., M.Ed., and Ph.D from Duke, humorously recalled being somewhat of a superfan along with her late husband, renowned dermatologist Dr. Sheldon Pinnell. “We had our first and only son, Tyson, together in 1983…. Back then you could stay in the hospital for more than a day after you had a baby. On the fifth day, Sheldon picked me up out of the hospital, and we went to a Duke men’s basketball game…. At one point, my late husband had more than 30 seats inside Cameron Indoor Stadium. And when they computerized the system, they said, ‘Who the hell is Pinnell?’ And they made us give back all but our four personal seats,” she said. Doren also remembered how Krzyzewski regularly sent Tyson signed posters, such as one that congratulated the then-seventh grader on being the highest scorer on his undefeated Durham Academy basketball team.
‘Loyalty. Honor. Passion.’
Finally, some Duke faithful simply wanted to reflect. Matt Uhlman, a 2010 Duke Medical School graduate from Yakima, Wash., praised Krzyzewski’s composure. “He was on his way to being the winningest coach of all time, had won at every level, but always remained humble and acknowledged that he was ultimately playing a game. The way he has led his teams and helped them keep things in perspective has always been very inspiring.”
In addition, David London of Boulder, Colo., and a Class of 1989 alum, reflected on “how happy [Krzyzewski] has made [him] over the course of [him] life.” He writes, “To this day my best friends are a group of about a dozen of my Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity brothers. I have no doubt that the continuity and sustained excellence of the basketball team under Coach K is one of the primary reasons we are still such good friends over 30 years later. I still have a text thread going with two of these guys for every game!!” Charlie White, a 49-year-old out of Asheboro, N.C., put it simply: “To me, Coach Krzyzewski means excellence. Loyalty. Honor. Passion. While certainly not a perfect man, he is the sort of leader any parent would be comfortable trusting with their son. He understands that above all else, a coach is an educator who is responsible for not only teaching his players about the game, but also preparing them to be men. Finally, to me he is the coach who made the Duke program the gold standard. He is The GOAT.”
ANNOUNCEMENT FROM PAGE 10 42 years is something that some, including athletic director Kevin White, value even more than the laundry list of accomplishments under Krzyzewski’s name. “Mike’s greatest gift, in my opinion, has been his unabashed love and utter commitment to his players,” White said. So at a once-over of Krzyzewski’s storied career, it’d be easy to stop and only read the gaudy numbers on his resumé. But when the legendary coach walks off the court for the last time, whenever that may be this next season, he won’t just walk off into the distance with rings and wins, but will do so with his wife, three daughters, 10 grandkids and countless members of The Brotherhood by his side.
