A Simple “Hello” The Career Fair is a fantastic opportunity for students to speak with employers, explore potential career paths, and make connections. It is also a place where germs can be transmitted through physical contact. In an effort to maintain good health and minimize the potential spread of the flu and other viruses among Career Fair participants, both students and employers, we recommend you abstain from the traditional handshake greeting in favor of a simple “hello”. In the Career Fair setting where many greetings are exchanged, one infected hand can spread a lot of germs. This small change to a common practice can go a long way toward reducing the spread of infectious germs. Remember, your health is our concern. Wash your hands, eat healthy foods, and get plenty of rest. We’ll see you at the Career Fair.

Online career advice for Duke students As students work to polish their resumes and present themselves in the best manner possible to secure positions in the professional world, they should be aware of all the ways they publicly display themselves. Duke’s career center Web site says students should be aware that all information displayed on social networking sites, such as MySpace and Facebook, is public information, suggesting a wise first step for career-world success is changing that profile picture of yourself in a beer-soaked tutu and deleting your Taylor Swift-titled albums from nights out at Shooters. “You have a much larger audience than you might be aware,” the Web site states. Nick O’Neill compiled a list of privacy settings Facebook users should be aware of on his blog site allfacebook.com. The first tip, is for users to be completely aware of every person on their friend list. O’Neill suggests combing through your friends and placing friends in “groups” such as “Friends,” “Family” and “Professional.” Privacy settings can be easily applied to each friend group, keeping your grandmother from flipping through your spring break pictures and your boss from seeing a photo of you doing a kegstand. O’Neill also informs users about how to make themselves unsearchable on the site altogether. In “Privacy Settings” on your facebook account, you can select, under “Search Visibility,” who can find you on Facebook after searching your name. He also instructs how to remove your Facebook page from being a hit when your name is searched on

Google or another search engine. By visiting the “Search privacy settings” page, you can uncheck the box reading “Create a public search listing for me and submit it for search engine indexing,” O’Neill states. Although you may ensure photos you post of yourself are suitable for public viewing, you have less control over others posting tagged photos of you. You can remove others’ ability to view tagged photos of you by checking the option, “only me,” under “Who can see tagged photos of you?” on the privacy page. As for your own photos, you must limit others’ viewing abilities on an album by album basis, so be sure to implement privacy settings each time you create a new album. O’Neill also instructs how to prevent certain stories from appearing in other’s news feeds, such as changes in relationship status. To remove each type of story, visit the “News Feed and Wall Privacy” page and uncheck boxes next to the stories you do not want to appear on your wall. Facebook users can also eliminate the potential of someone viewing an embarrassing wall post before they read it by limiting those who can view posts to their wall. To do this, they change the option under “Who can see wall posts made by my friends?” under “Settings.” They can also prevent certain people from posting on their walls at all, under the wall posts section of the Profile Privacy settings page. Lastly, users can choose to keep their list of friends private on the Profile Privacy page 023168-Chronicle_4_6.875"x4.875":Layout 1 11/9/09 16:40 Page 1 under the “Friends” setting.

The ‘Thank You’ letter is not just a formality! Throughout your job search, you will come across many people who will help you along the way – recruiters, interviewers, alumni, and other helpful contacts. A well-written thank-you letter is a great way to express gratitude, establish goodwill, and strengthen your candidacy – not to mention, it is an essential part of job-search etiquette. The basic rule of thumb is to thank everyone who helps you in any way. When used to follow up on employment interviews, thank-you letters should be sent within 24 hours to your interviewers. Handwritten thank-you letters on stationery are ideal, but, when following up is time-sensitive (ex: a recruiter who will let you know about their hiring decision next week), an email is better. Remember that the thank-you letter is not just a formality but also an opportunity for you to remind employers who you are and how you are uniquely suited for a position.

Starting your job hunt — early In the midst of the current financial crisis, many students nearing graduation are finding themselves scrambling to secure a job before their release into the real world. To avoid the dreaded fallback of moving back into your parents house, students should take full advantage of the wealth of resources offered them by the University to aid in their search. Most people’s starting point should, of course, be the Career Center. Located in 110 Page Building, the Career Center provides numerous advising services for both undergraduate and graduate students, and freshmen and sophomores may find the Career Center a helpful tool for finding internships and summer opportunities. Those looking for one-on-one support should schedule an appointment with a career counselor, who can help figure out the right steps for reaching career goals. The center also sponsors mock interviews and resume workshops as well as various events to connect Duke students with potential employers and mentors. Students can attend several career fairs—including ones specifically for those interested in technology and non-profit work—hosted by the Career Center throughout the year to talk to

employer representatives and distribute their names and resumes. No student should overlook the University’s biggest networking resources—the alumni. DukeConnect, a database of Duke alumni volunteers willing to be interviewed about their careers by current Duke students, now boasts more than 3,000 participants, and the Fannie Mitchell Career Conference—held each year in early Spring—draws a large number of University alumni to speak with students about their respective industries in both panel discussion and casual meal settings. Both are great ways for students to network and get specific questions answered by experienced and helpful alumni. A computer is a great way to start getting involved in the job search, as the University offers several online resources to help students find something that fits their criteria. Career Search and Duke eRecruiting both allow students to search for networking and job opportunities all over the country. Although the job hunt may not conclude as easily for Duke graduates as they might expect, taking advantage of the University’s many offerings can help make the process much smoother.
