“Barbara Kingsolver is a writer whose works have been read and honored around the globe,” President Richard Brodhead said in a statement announcing Kingsolver’s selection in November. “She’s also an extraordinary speaker. Ashley Holmstrom THE CHRONICLE

When seniors Kyle Knight and Matt Zafirovski step up to the podium Sunday, they know that speaking together at graduation will lx* one of the most unique ways to culminate four years of friendship at Duke. It will mark the first time in the University’s history that two students have been chosen to deliver the undergraduate commencement address simultaneously. “Our powers combined are far greater t hen that of a single human,” Zafirovski said. “It’s kind oflike captain planet." added Knight. Although they did not provide details about their speech, the duo said they planned to inject humor into it. “We are innovators,” Knight said. “We are going to trademark this.,,. Think if Martin l ull ut King andAbe Lincoln and had spoken together. It would have changed history. Because they were bom so far apart, it would have been like a time warp. And a damn good speech” Knight, a cultural anthropology major and philosophy minor from Winthrop, M.E., and a memberof Inside joke, plans to spend the summer photographing nomads in culturally-Tibetan regions in China as part of a Visual Studies Initiative. But given the recent Tihetan-GWnese conflicts, Knight said he realizes he may not be able to complete bis study, in which case he would venture to Nepal, India, where he previously spent timeresearching social and cultural impacts on people with disabilities. Next fall, Knight plans to work for

But before they part ways to pursue different professional paths, the seniors said giving the address together would give testament to their four-year friendship, which has involved numerous trips to Cosmic Cantina and Chipotle, and, most recently, working together on the senior gift campaign. “We love [Duke],” said Knight. “We thought this was, selfishly, a very cool way to say goodbye.” The two seniors, who were randomly assigned freshman roommates, had their first experience collaborating early in their Duke education. One of their friends in the Pitchforks asked them to entertain a large crowd when there was a “small emergency” before a show' in Page Auditorium, they said. Their impromptu skit was a well-received, so the) decided to try their luck again by submitting a graduation speech. The student graduation speaker is chosen by a group of .students, alumni, staffand faculty. Finalists are invited to perform their speeches in person. “The committee all really enjoyed their speech, their delivery, their sense of humor and their content,” said Sterly Wilder, executive director of alumni affairs and a member of the student speaker selection committee. “It was an all-in-one package.”

2004 Days after President Richard Brodhead took the reins of the University, men’s basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski was offered a position as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers—a series of events that would prove a portent of the news that would come to characterize a monumental 2004-2005 academic year. Brodhead took up residence in the Allen Building July 1, succeeding Nan Keohane to become Duke’s ninth president. After his inauguration, the celebrated former Yalie named international issues such as global health and improving undergraduate research opportunities as priorities. Brodhead also stressed the importance of putting a practical twist on the lessons learned in die University’s lecture auditoriums and hallowed halls. He proposed and initiated a financial aid push, which began with a $2O-million donation from alumnus William Gross. The push would evolve to become the Financial Aid Initiative the next year with a goal ofraising $3OO million. Krzyzewski ultimately decided not to go pro, but Brodhead and the University faced a new set of challenges in Fall 2004. Advocating the need for free speech on a college campus, the new president and the University allowed the Palestine Solidarity Movement to hold its conference on Duke’s campus—a controversial move that evoked the criticism of many who deemed it an imprudent move to allow the “anti-Semitic” group on campus. The Freeman Center for Jewish Life sponsored speakers and a concert in response to the PSM’s appearance on campus, and the University increased security in the days leading up to the conference. Amid political tensions on campus, The Chronicle—which celebrated its 100th anniversary in the fall—feced opposition from members ofthejewish community when it printed an October column by Phillip Kurian entitled “The Jews.” Many criticized the newspaper’s coverage of the PSM conferenceand issues surrounding it Construction, meanwhile, continued to be a staple on campus, and the $lO7-million Fitzpatrick Centerfor Interdisciplinary Engineering, Medicine and Applied Sciences opened

Also making headlines, former president Douglas Knight passed away and the Duke University Health System faced criticism for mistakenly using elevator hydraulic fluid to wash surgical tools. Outside the Gothic Wonderland’s stone walls, two other Yale alumni faced off in the heated 2004 presidential contest. The race between Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., and Republican President George W. Bush prompted a number of rallies and debates on campus. Many student organizations brought in speakers and some professors decided to teach election-based classes. Nightlife experienced some interesting developments at the end of the school year. Sophomore Year

The Class of 2008’s sophomore year was filled with memorable highs and lows, including events that opened up dialogue on issues such as race, community relations and the University’s priorities for the next five years. From the Rolling Stones’ concert to the lacrosse scandal, the Duke community was rocked in more ways than one. Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans before most students had settled into their dormitory rooms. But Duke responded quickly, announcing that it would make space available to Gulf Coast students who were from North and South Carolina or had ties to the University. Student groups on campus responded in their own way, holding fundraising campaigns by selling shirts and CDs, arranging for donations to be made on FLEX and holding benefit concerts and parties. Meanwhile, running errands on West Campus became just a little bit harder, as students were forced to find detours to reach the Bryan Center. Beginning in August, workers began to demolish the old Bryan Center WTalkway. A new plaza took shape gradually over the course of the year. Fall semester also saw Duke welcome a few esteemed visitors. On a warm Saturday night in October, Mickjagger and his quartet of sexagenarians electrified 40,000 fans who had packed into Wallace Wade Stadium. A month later, former Secretary of State Colin Powell brought another crowd to its feet as he delivered the keynote address in the dedication of Rubenstein Hall. On the academic side, administratorsformulated the strategic plan that would guide the University for the next half-decade and continued to lay the groundwork for the complete overhaul ofCentral Campus. The spring semester was a tumultuous one as students returned from Spring Break to allegations that members of the men’s lacrosse team raped a black exotic dancer at a party held at 610 North Buchanan Blvd.—an off-campus property rented by three of the team’s captains. MAY 9,2008

LOOKING BACK }|§ CLASS OF 2008

2007

Junior Year

2006 During the past-several years, Duke students have witnessed their campus culture questioned and criticized, but rarely have Duke student interactions and relations defined a year as it did in the Class of 2008’s junior year. With allegations of rape, sexual assault and kidnapping against three former members of the men’s lacrosse teiyn still pending, students returned to a University community in a slate of turmoil in Fall 2006, as it struggled to identify and remedy problems on campus. While students moved in after a long summer, Larry Moneta, vice president for student affairs, was busy working to change the Duke social scene in his own way. Coming in at approximately $lO million when it opened to returning students in August, the 40,000 sq.-ft. West Campus Plaza has provided a new venue for performance groups, food vendors and lablers as students and visitors file through the new huh ofWest Campus. Looking to change dining experiences at Duke, Compass Group took over this year from ARAMARK. Corp. as the new dining management company. The Marketplace welcomed new caterer Bon Appetit, and freshmen were armed with Duke Dining Durham Dollars—a $5O gilt card for food aimed to push freshmen beyond the East Campus walls and into the Durham community. Yet despite improvements in some areas on campus, Duke dropped to eighth in its U.S. News and World Report ranking in 2006—its lowest undergraduate ranking since 1999. Pretrial hearings in the lacrosse case continued through the fill, but it became clear that the tide was turning its allegations of possible misconduct by Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong and investigators began to circulate. In December, the North Carolina Slate Bar charged Nifong with mishandling the case in its pretrial stages by making extrajudicial statements condemning the accused players. In January, the Bar added an additional charge for withholding information from defense lawyers regarding the results of DNA testing.

HOLLY CORNELL/THE CHRONICLE

No. 1 Duke beat No. 2 Virginia 12-9in the 2007championship game, taking home the ACC trophy. Under fire, Nifong dropped rape charges against the three indicted players and stepped down from the case, in the midst of Winter Break, requesting that North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper fill his place. Commissioned by President Richard Brodhead in the aftermath oflast March’s allegations, the Campus Culture Initiative ended its nearly one-year study ofDuke’s campus culture in the spring. A 36-page report was released in February to mixed reviews. Many students cited recommendations regarding alcohol policies, athletics and selective living groups—as well as a general lack of student

input and empirical data in the report’s findings—as weaknesses. The opening of the 280,000 sq.-ft. French Family Science Center, funded by a ISO-million gift from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, was one of a number of contributions made by the foundation to encourage education outside of the classroom. With a $ 15-million gift to foster undergraduate community service projects through Duke Engage and another $lO million to support Brodhead’s Financial Aid Initiative, it was the year ofMelindaFrench Gates, Trinity ’B6, Fuqua ’B7 and the foundation’s co-chair. Spring also brought with it another small

solution to a big problem as two students collaborated to launch DukePlays, an organization dedicated to the motto: “Work hard, play well.” In February, the new lacrosse season kicked off as players burst through the tunnel to a sold-out crowd. The team’s victory over Dartmouth in the first game was indicative of a season of success for the players. April was a month of good news for lacrosse at Duke: Cooper dropped all remaining charges against the three indicted former players, declaring their innocence in the case and criticizing Nifong’s behavior in the case. Later in the month, the 2006-2007 men’s lacrosse team marched off the field, ACC trophy in hand. Other parts of the athletics program, however, did not fare quite as well, with a disappointing wiriless season for the football team and less-than-perfect endings for both the men and women’s basketball teams. Despite a rough season for the men’s team, students held on to hope for the promising women’s team—undefeated through the regular season—and for die chance of a run for bodi teams to the national championship. Hopes were crushed when the men fell in the first round of die tournamentfor the first dme in 11 seasons and the women faced a heartbreaking loss to Rutgers in the SweetSixteen. The loss for the women’s team was followed by another—this one off the court. In April, popular women’s basketball head coach Gail Goestenkors announced her decision to leave Duke to coach at University ofTexas. Weeks later Duke welcomed a new coach, Joanne P. McCallie, or “Coach P,” as the new head coach for the team. But through it all, it was a year ofpromise. Promise for a University, gaining new footing after a year of uncertainty and reevaluation. Promise for a student body, led to understand campus politics in a new light by outspoken and persistent Duke Student Government President Elliott Wolf, and promise for a campus, as leaders urged students to reimagine what a University should and could be.

CLASS OF 2008

LOOKING BACK

2007

Senior Year

The Class of 2008’s stint at the University was capped by a busy year that began with justice for the much-maligned Mike Nifong, ended with a disappointing finish for the basketball season and saw the tragic death of one of Duke’s own along the way. The initial stage of the Duke lacrosse case came to a close in June, when a North Carolina State Bar Disciplinary Hearing Committee ruled that Nifong, the Durham district attorney, should be disbarred for hisrole in the case. During the course of the year, Nifong would also spend a night in jail and file for bankmptcy. It would not be die last word on the case. When students returned to the Durham heat, many shed some extra sweat by participating in Duke Bikes, an initiative to promote health and sustainabiilty. The Outpost opened in August below the West Campus Plaza. In August, students in the School ofMedicine relumed with the news that Dr. Nancy Andrews, former dean for basic sciences and graduate studies at Harvard Medical School, would become their new' dean. The Medical Center was also named the seventh-best hospital in the nation in U.S. News & World Report’s annual Honor Roll of America’s Best Hospitals. At the beginning of September, Residence Life and Housing Services announced that Few Quadrangle would close for renovations through Fall 2008. The Few saga would stretch across mast of the academic year, reaching its nadir when the resulting housing shortage forced dozens ofrising sophomores to take Fall housing assignments on Central Campus. Memlx'rs of the University community came together on a variety ofinitiatives aimed at coping with a statewide shortage of water, as a droughlasted throughout much of the year. The fall saw the first of several lacrosserelated lawsuits. In October, Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty and David Evans, Trinity ’o6—wrongly indicted members of the 200S-2006 men’s lacrosse team—filed a civil rights suit against the city of Durham and others who allegedly helped prolong false sexual assault allegations against them.

2008

In December, the Board of Trustees ap-

proved sweeping changes to Duke’s financial

aid apparatus, increasing the amount of aid given and reducing loans for most students. But the changes, among the first concrete results of the Financial Aid Initiative, would not be felt by the Class of 2008—they will kick in for the 2008-2009 school year. By the beginning of the 2008 and Duke’s second semester, students faced more pressing issues than the relendess drought In the midst of a January crime wave in Durham, engineering graduate student Abhijit Mahato, 29, was shot to death in his home at The Anderson Apartments, just 1.6 miles from West Campus. The Triangle experienced a second tragedy in March when Eve Carson, a senior and student body president at the University ofNorth Carolina atChapel Hill, was found dead.Police later arrested Durham residents Demario Atwater and Laurence Lovette for their involvement in Carson’s murder. Lovette, 17,was also charged with Mahato’sjan. 18 shooting. At the semester’s start, two groups of plaintiffs—three former lacrosse players in one Third Eye Blind's Stephan Jenkins capped this year's Last Day of Classes with 90s hits like,"Can I Graduate?" group, and 38 players and theirfamilies in the other—sued the University, Durham, Nifong fairs byparticipating in pro-Tibet and pro-Chi- for Louisiana State University, where he will be and others seeking damages.
