THE ART OF
GIVING
THE ART OF GIVING IS A SOCIAL JUSTICE FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN TO CLOSE THE DIGITAL DIVIDE FOR OUR STUDENTS WHO DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY DURING COVID-19. WE FIND OURSELVES IN A SIMILAR SITUATION AS OUR CO-FOUNDERS DID ALMOST 50 YEARS AGO. THE ART OF GIVING’S PURPOSE IS TO BRING OUR COMMUNITY TOGETHER AND SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS, FACULTY, ALUMNI, BLACK-OWNED BUSINESSES, AND BLACK ARTISTS. “GIVE UNTIL IT HURTS!” - PEGGY COOPER CAFRITZ, CO-FOUNDER

What Art Means to Us African American art is amazing. Art reflects cultural values, beliefs and identity and helps to preserve the many different communities that make up our world. Art chronicles our own lives and experiences over time. We need art to understand and to share our individual and shared history. We’re thrilled to be at the heart of the movement, having united collections with African American art since 2004. As the DMV’s leading African American Art Gallery, we are committed to our motto: “Our Gallery, is Your Gallery.” In our journey to make art accessible for all, we have worked alongside our collectors, staff and local communities to discover the new generation of artistic talent. LETTER FROM PRINCIPAL SANDI LOGAN Duke Ellington School of the Arts (DESA) was established in 1974 and remains the sole D.C. public high school to offer a dual curriculum program encompassing pre-professional arts training and a rigorous academic program, in preparation for college, conservatory, and careers in the arts. With a 98% graduation rate and alumni acceptance into the most prestigious higher education institutions, Ellington is recognized as one of the nation’s premier arts schools, and well known on the international stage for our exceptionally talented and successful alumni. The COVID-19 global pandemic has had a profound impact on every one of us. The burdens of virtual learning, unemployment, racial tension, and social unrest have created hardships for many, particularly our Black and Brown communities – about 80% of our current student body is of Black/African American or Hispanic/Latino descent. Given the life-changing events related to and triggered by the pandemic, students across the country are experiencing the negative effects of racial, social, and economic disparities in their educational experiences. Ellington’s mission is to continue to provide rigorous academic and pre-professional artistic education to students who may not otherwise have access to high-level instruction. However, with the conditions related to distance learning and the growing digital divide, Ellington students’ newest challenge is gaining access to technology that keeps them competitive in arts education. The Art of Giving campaign is the first of several fundraising efforts to reach our goal of $100,000 for laptops, software, wireless hotspots, and other needed components to directly support virtual instruction. The Art of Giving is an opportunity for the community to not only support these artists-in-training through technological support but also highlight some of the tremendous works of our faculty and alumni featured in the show. I would like to personally thank you for considering the opportunity to partner with Duke Ellington School of the Arts for raising these funds. If you have any queries regarding our organization or the campaign itself, please feel free to contact me at sandi.logan@k12.dc.gov. Thank you and we love you madly! Sandi M. Logan Principal

Ellington Teacher's Work Installed at MLK Library When DC Public Library officials considered an artist to create a treatment for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library’s new glass walled vestibule, they didn’t need to look far. They chose Ellington’s Nekisha Durrett to provide a work of art to complement the building’s $211 million modernization. “We are proud that the MLK Library will feature a major installation by this important artist, a rising star locally and nationally, whose work has already had such an impact in our Library spaces,” DCPL executive director Richard Reyes Gavilan said in April 2019 while making the announcement. Ms. Durrett installed her artwork last week and gave Museum Studies students a sneak peek through a virtual field trip to the Library, which isn’t open to the public yet. In real time, with Ms. Durrett on site, students watched the installation and asked questions about the project – from conception of the idea, to competing for the commission, and the final installation. Prior to the pandemic, Museum Studies students played a role in the masterpiece that now graces the Library’s double-height glass walls, showcasing two grand, monumental staircases. “They ‘vectorized’ photographs of the buttons to prep them for integration into the artwork,” Ms. Durrett says. She was selected from a pool of 70 artists by a panel of experts with input from a group of community advisors. Previous work with the Library includes: a novel-inspired installation in the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library entryway as part of a public art program in 2013. She also did a 3-story window graphic for the 2015 UNCENSORED Banned Books Week celebration. In 2017, she created “A Garden Party” a mural in the West End Library. “I am proud that Ms. Durrett will have the opportunity to share her work with our entire city and thank the Library for selecting a DCPS educator who is doing incredible things for our students,” DCPS Chancellor Lewis D. Ferebee said. For a profile of Ms. Durrett in Washington City Paper, click here or visit washingtoncitypaper.com. graphic
