In the Ciompi Quartet’s tradition of opening each season with a work by Haydn, father of the string quartet, the Ciompi begin their 50th Anniversary Season with the Quartet in G Major, op. 77, no. 1, Haydn’s penultimate work for string quartet. Op. 77 is rich in textures and conversational in style, written at the height of Haydn’s fame and virtuosity. Ten years later, Haydn’s former pupil Beethoven was equally renowned; his Quartet in E-flat Major, op. 74, a work known for its elegant use of pizzicato, reminiscent of the sound of the harp, completes the first half of the program. For the finale, the Ciompi are joined by six-time GRAMMY-nominated jazz singer and longtime Durham resident Nnenna Freelon, in a performance of composer Mark Kuss’ Slave Songs and Spirituals.
The Ciompi Quartet present an allViennese program, opening with the early romantic “Rosamunde” Quartet of Schubert, filled with restless melancholy. Webern’s lush, tonal Langsamer Satz (Slow Movement) is followed by his brief Six Bagatelles for String Quartet, an early atonal work that marks his transition into expressionism as influenced by his mentor, Arnold Schoenberg. The evening culminates in Schoenberg’s romanticexpressionist String Quartet No. 2 in F-sharp Minor, op. 10, with soprano Tony Arnold, a leading proponent of new music last seen in Duke Performances’ sold-out presentation of David Lang’s The Whisper Opera, and praised by The New York Times as “a bold, powerful interpreter.” Op. 10 is a mesmerizing work of striking contrasts, and Schoenberg’s first departure from conventional tonality.

The Ciompi Quartet are joined by members of Kyo-Shin-An Arts for a concert encompassing works by Eastern and Western composers. Opening the concert is Debussy’s Quartet in G Minor, op. 10, inspired by an Indonesian gamelan that the composer heard at the Paris Exposition of 1889. This is followed by Pulitzer Prize-winning Chinese American composer Zhou Long’s meditative Poems from Tang for string quartet, inspired by four poems from China’s Tang dynasty. BBC Music Magazine praised “the sparkling colors of Zhou Long’s unique sound world.” Three musicians from the Kyo-ShinAn Arts collective join the Ciompi for the final work on the program, James Nyoraku Schlefer’s Dream Corner, written for string quartet and Japanese Sankyoku — an ensemble that includes shakuhachi (bamboo end-blown flute), koto (thirteen-string zither), shamisen (three-string lute), and voice.
The Ciompi Quartet conclude their celebration of fifty years in residence at Duke University by welcoming former students back to campus — and to the stage — for a Duke Reunions Weekend performance of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major, a work in the tradition of the Italian concerto grosso. Bassist and composer Edgar Meyer, praised by The New Yorker as “the most remarkable virtuoso in the relatively un-chronicled history of his instrument,” joins the Ciompi for a performance of his own String Quintet, originally written for the Emerson String Quartet, and encompassing bluegrass, jazz, and classical styles. Meyer and the Ciompi conclude this celebratory concert with the Dvorˇák String Quintet No. 2 in G Major, op. 77, a work that foregrounds the bass and evokes the sound of a chamber orchestra. The Ciompi Quartet was founded at Duke University in 1965 by the renowned Italian violinist Giorgio Ciompi. The Quartet’s recitals and recordings display their facility with masterpieces of the quartet repertoire from Haydn to Brahms, as well as their unflagging dedication to contemporary music. Thanks to the Ciompi’s robust commissioning program, their concerts often feature world premiere compositions by living composers.

Praised for their “unrelenting rhythmic accuracy and pitch-perfect intonation” (Classical Voice of North Carolina), the Ciompi perform regularly at Duke’s Baldwin Auditorium, and have made a slate of fine recordings, the most recent on the Naxos label in 2015 featuring the music of Chiayu Hsu.
The members of the Ciompi are on the music faculty at Duke and play a leading role in the University’s cultural life, in addition to serving as musical ambassadors for the University on concert tours throughout the world. Recent tours have ranged from New England to Washington State, and from Germany to China, in addition to last season's appearance at the Tenri Cultural Institute in New York City unveiling three of their most recent commisioned works. The members of the Ciompi Quartet are longtime Durham residents, maintain full studios of Duke student musicians, and have been playing together in their current iteration for nearly two decades. Their roots in the Duke and Durham communities give the Ciompi the freedom to perform some of the less frequently played works of the chamber music repertoire, such as the Dvorˇák String Quintet featured in the 2015/16 season. The 2015/16 Ciompi Quartet season is available at a subscription fee of $80 for all four concerts. Note: Processing fees are $1.50 per single ticket, and $5 per subscription. There is a 7.5% North Carolina sales tax that is included in the price of your subscription.
