MONK @ 100 10 DAYS, ALL MONK, ALL THE TIME MONK@100 is a 10-day festival, presented by Duke Performances, celebrating the centenary of North Carolina native jazz icon Thelonious Sphere Monk, born October 10, 1917 in Rocky Mount. The festival takes place in Durham Fruit & Produce, a 15,000-square-foot warehouse space custom-designed by Raleigh-based visual artist André Leon Gray to evoke Monk’s ineffable legacy. The artists programmed on MONK@100 are among today’s finest jazz musicians; they’ll play Monk’s music — and only Monk’s music — in two separately-ticketed sets a night.
JD ALLEN & FRIENDS PLAY MONK Tenor saxophonist JD Allen’s ragged, searching tone is redolent of jazz’s blues heritage, reflecting his pedigree as a grandson of the Delta, a son of Detroit, and a leader of modern jazz. Allen and his eponymous trio — with drummer Rudy Royston and bassist Gregg August — are joined by a new guest each night to test and stretch Monk’s music.

SPIRITUALS Little is known about Monk’s teenage years as the organist in an evangelistic road show, but the influence of gospel music is evident in everything he wrote. In the only MONK@100 program exploring the source material of Monk’s music, the Como Mamas — a trio out of Como, Mississippi — perform a cappella spirituals with grit and power.
