Dear Readers

~

hopping is not a favored activity for me ! I shy away from crowded stores and over the yea rs have developed my me thods for purchasing needed items at the quietest times. Did yo u know, for example, that Saturday evening is gene rally a good time to find department and specialty stores like Trader Joe's fairly empty? Monday May 10th during the early afternoon seemed like a good time to do some needed Costco shopping in Wincheste r. I was wrong. Although I needed more DPN sup plies, I decided to stop wi th my impulse items, hummus and a book on home orga nization . " Forget the mailing labe ls; I'm out of here," I grumbled as I headed toward the long lines at the ava ilable check-out counters. That was my best decision of the day ! Directly in fro nt of me were two men with a young girl who was sitt ing in the child seat of a filled shopping cart. We were all headed fo r a long wait, and I was sure the little girl wo uld get antsy a nd, well, be like I'd be at her age. One of the me n headed toward a service counte r and the othe r man bega n singing a song with the girl. I wish J could remember the wo rds, but they were something like, "We're standing in the long, long Costco line, waiting to pay and go home ... " The man tapped out the rhythm o n one of the boxes in the cart, a nd the girl joined in. What fun! All too soon we reached the registe r. I said to the ma n, "You must be a musician." He replied, "No, but I work with them a ll the time." Then I noticed his teeshirt; it said Sweet Caroline's. That is a great place in Winchester for music ... mainly blues .. . and good food. A few hours late r I decided The Costco Adve nture wo uld be the theme of my editor's lette r because of a new feature on yo ung people a nd music we' re beginning. I called Sweet Caroline's and spoke with Dean Thomas, who created the song. The man with him, I learned, was Te rry Hudson, owne r

of Sweet Caroline's. The girl is fo ur-years-old and he r name is ... Caroline. I was told that Caroline has a drum set and knows the words to lots of blues songs. There is no doubt that music has always been a n active part o f he r life. I'd sing with he r any day ! We've heard how music teaches us about many subjectsmath, history and lite rature among the m- whi le we're growing up. Unfo rtunately, music is generally one of the first subjects to go when school budgets are trimmed. But many of you dulcimer playe rs go into the schools and reach out, teaching and inspiring childre n and young adults. Johnny Ray, a Texas music teacher and dulcimer playe r, is a new columnist for Dulci me r Players News. He will share stories of yo ung playe rs and community organizations who are e nriching our dulcime r world . I'm sure he'd enjoy hearing from yo u, should yo u have ideas to pass along. Twice ! I believe it is now appropriate to use the oft-spe lled word Dulicmer on the masthead of this issue of DPN! In less than a yea r I have misspe lled two names on the cover: Dinah Ansley and, now, Ray Be langer. Did I ever te ll you about my history with dyslexia? What can I do except to say that your editor, Ma ledine Nac Meil humbly apologizes ! 0

Player's Spotlight IN MEMORIAM We lost another beautiful soul in our dulcimer community when Ann Foss of Hannibal, Missouri died on March 4, 2004. I had the pleasure of knowing Ann for five years. I met her when I organized the Southwest Dulcimer & Acoustic Music Festival. Ann and her husband Chris drove from Missouri in an old pick-up truck wi'th no ~ir conditioning, across lexas in June, to our new festival in Arizona. Tbey hauled dulcimers and a huge tent-and when she arrived she was ready to jump in and help. That was Ann; always friendly and loving. She was a fine hammered dulcimer player and builder and loved to jam. She will long be missed by those who knew and loved her.

Anna Duff It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of Robert Tack who passed away suddenly on March 15, 2004. Bob was a hammered dulcimer builder from Delton, Michigan who always had a kind word and a genuine smile for everyone. Many of you knew him better than I, but I want to share the impact that Bob bad on my life. 1 first met Bob after I purchased a used R. L. Thck dulcimer at a festival in Pennsylvania. When I took the dulcimer La his shop to have it re-strung, he welcomed me and my busband with open arms. As he showed us around, his love and joy in building instruments and playing music sbone like a light from him. Whenever I saw him he always called me by name and asked if I was still taking care of my dulcimer. I have been playing that same dulcimer since 1997, and I hope he knew how much buying that dulcimer changed my life. I will always remember his smile and kindness each time 1 play.

Talented musicians and workshop instructors added to a great weekend at Roscoe Village's 30th Annual Dulcimer Days Festival on May 14-16, 2004. The event, held at the Coshocton Lake Park Pavilion, featured the Mid-Eastem Regional Hammered and Mountain Dulcimer Championships. Hammered Dulcimer: Ray Brooks (Lewis Center OH), Kathie Jerrell (Walkerton IN), Jennifer Kinsley (Granville OHio Mountain Dulcimer: Paul Byrum (Dalton GAt Lesley Miller (Bowling Green OH), Butch Ross (Philadelphia PA).As firstplace winners. The event also included open, vocal and duet contests a variety of workshops, evening concerts, exhibits, and ia'", sessions. Open Competition: Tish Westman (Mabscott WV), Jennifer Kinsley (Granville OH), Oaniel Haley of Orrville, OH. Vocal Competition: Butch Ross (Philadelphia PAl, Lauri Kaplan (Columbus OH), Earl Whitehill (Georgetown PAl. Musical Reviews Michae l'S recordings are always good and th is is no exception.

Neal Walters

Oh Dulcimer Where Art Thou consists of fourteen traditional tun es, both secular and sacred. Michael's Shull's dulc imer play ing is superb as usual and he feat ures an excellent cast of backup musicians in a program of material that

might easily be dismissed as certified "warh orses." He does some great things

with old tunes such as O ld Joe Clark. The additio n of some sparkling clawhammer banjo by Doug Trantham

and the bluesy fidd le and mandolin of Mark Barnett, Andy Zabinski, and To m Atkinson add to th is enjoyable set; proof positive that the old tunes are sometimes the best tu nes. T he medley of "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" and

" Highways and Hedges" caught my ear in particu lar, as did the sublle twist on

the usual chord progression on " I Come to the Ga rden" (a.k.a. " In the Garden").

The Blackest Crow is filled with great songs imaginatively arranged and superbly re ndered by two fine musicians. Aubrey Atwater plays dulcime r o n three of the twelve cuts, but these three are wo rth the price of the CD even if that's yo ur o nly measure of me rit. Both play guitar; Aubrey plays wonderful oldtime banjo, mandolin, and tin whistle; and Elwood Donnelly is an expert per-

cussion ist and harmonica player. The vocals are heartfelt and the harmon ies are go rgeo us. The songs concern themes th at range from the workaday life of your average cowboy (Song of the Cowboys) to Aubrey'S reaction to 9- 11 (Q uiet Sky). Her version of Single G irl , Married Girl is perhaps my favorite cut, but it is difficult to choose favor ites. O ther songs incl ude The Road to Dumleman, Soldier's Round, One Day I Will , She Sits at Her Loom, Sweet Fern, and Fare T hee We ll.

Joshua Messick is the 2003 National Hammered Dulcimer champion and a fine musician whose tender years belie a great musical maturity. Stillness is a work of great sensitivity and is filled with wonderful arrangements of timeless and beautifu l tunes. The marriage of Joshua's dulcimer with cello, guitar, flute, clarinet, piccolo, bassoon, French horn, penny-

whistle, bass, and various percussion and keyboard stylings gives the production a rich fee l. The tunes include Beauty and the Beast, Faith (a medley of Mozart's Sonata in C Major and the tradi tional hymn, My Faith Looks Up to Thee), Down by the Sally GardensIDanny Boy, Fur Elise, Stillness, [n Dreams (from the Lord of the R ings), and Moonlight Sonata. This is a good one!

Trio is an absolute delight! Linda Thomas's hammered du lcimer and Dan DeLancey's guitar blend together

seamlessly on a great selection of cantem路 para!)' and traditional tunes. Linda is a tasteful du lcimer player and Dan is an

excellent guitar player. The combined sound is so very smooth that o ne tends to forget just how d ifficult so me of these tunes are to play o n any instrument. Scott Tichenor adds some stellar mandolin licks and Ronnie DeLancey shines on bass throughout. Don Pedi jo ins them on mountain dulcimer fo r a rollicking version o f Jerusalem Ridge. This CD mixes hot instrumental tunes with great songs with Dan singing lead and Linda hann onizing and playing keyboard accompaniment. Selectio ns include Cold Frosty Mo rn, Send Me Your Address from Heaven, Jenny's Waltz, Lost River, and President G arfield's Hornpipe. Many of you know C urt Osgood as one o f the organizers of the Cranberry Dulcimer Ga thering. He's also a really hot hammered dulcimer player who specializes in great dance tun es with a New England fl avor. On Newfield Sessions he gets excellent support from veteran fiddler Jo hn Kirk and Jane Knoeck o n piano. This is a set of wonderful dance tunes played with great skill and boundless enthusiasm by three talented musicians. These tunes were recorded in one session in Newfield, nea r Ithaca, New York - hence th e album 's title-and represent some of Curt 's favorite jam tunes learned ove r thirty years of playing. The arrange ments are superb and allow each musician to stretch. Cu rt 's dulcimer playing is clea r and precise and th e interaction between the fiddle and hammered dulcimer is remarkable . Jane's contrastyle piano accompaniment is perfect for the occasio n and you will be looking for the nearest dance partner within seconds of hea ring the first no tes o f Aunt Mary's Canadian Jig. Other selections include Bare Necessities, T he Curvy Road to Corinth!l ndi an Po in t/Pigeon o n the G ate, and North Carolina Breakdown. Peggy Cart er is a fine hammered dulcimer player who, along with husband Chuck, runs Housto n's SAMFest. Coincidently, she is also Josh Messick's dulcimer teacher [see review o f Stillness in this issue]. Peggy's latest release, A Touch or Christmas Around The World, features holiday stand ards co mbined with ra rely- hea rd run es from the

Ch ristm as trad itio ns of many worl d cultures. She is jo ined by Beve rly Allison o n flute. T he combi nation of flute and hammered dul cimer is appropriate fo r this music and the holiday spirit is palpable . I

was particularly taken with their arrangement of Jingle Bells, whi ch breathes new li fe into this so ng. The entire album is packed with enchanting ho liday sounds, including 0 Ho ly Night, What Child Is This, Christm as Ice Stars, Ding Dong Merrily on High, Un Flambea u Jea nett e Isabella, and Noel Nouvelet. 0

An arrangement by Donna Missigman Laporte, Pennsylvania ith a reflective feeling in mind I set out to combine a timeless, simply stated plea for peace with one of o ur favorite patrio tic pieces. The result is the following arrangement of

W

"Dona Nobis Pacem" and "America". The literal translatio n of " Dona Nobis Pacem" is "Grant Us Peace." The 24-bar tune is of unknown origin and has been printed in countless 4-H and Camp Songbooks as well as in many hymnals. The title is the entire lyric for the song. This makes it user friendly even for groups of people who mayor may no t think they're singers. In many settings it is presented as a three-part round or cano n with the round beginning at e.ach eight measure phrase. '~merica" by Samuel A. Ward, with words by Katharine Lee Bates, is a favo rite patrio tic hymn. The melodic line stands equally well not only as a rousing rendition by a military band with a hundred-voice chorus, but also as an instrumental piece with an entirely different contemplative feeling. The two pieces combined present an ageless ho pe for peace and an offering of national pricle. [n this arrangement the first eight bars are presented in the upper octave, almost as an introduction rather than part of the body of the piece. This is a nice place to pluck the strings rather than use hammers. If you choose to pluck the strings you'll want to omit the full chords in the 5th and 6th measures and pluck only the o utside two pitches of each chord instead. Hold the hammers in three fingers of your hand while plucking with the index finger. The dotted half note at the end of the 8th measure gives you plenty of time to get hammers into position before continuing with the rest of the piece. The last note of measure 24 is actually the pick-up note or first note of '~eri ca." No ritard or slowing of tempo is indicated because the second piece in the set is slightly faster than the first, so a ritard

would be contradictory. The change of meter is very simple if the tune is familiar to you, and should flow natura lly from the meter of 3/4 for "Do na Nobis Pacem" to a meter of 4/4 for "America. "

measure 37 this arrangement returns to the upper octave where it began. I've also doubled the note val ues in measures 40 and 41. This is an easy way for your audience to know that the song is winding down before it returns to the 3-beat meter and upper octave where it began. Depending o n the setting and the amount of musical time to fill I sometimes play '~erica" a second time through, probably raising the tune to the upper octave. The upper octave is not written out here but shouldn't be too difficult to play. You'll wa nt to omit the extended note values in measures 40 and 41 and return them to their original quarter note length. Also omit the return to the meter of 3 and the "Dona Nobis Pacem" coda ending printed he re. The last change, if [n

you want to repeat the tunc, is to omit

measures 38 and 39, except for the last note of measure 39. If that sounds confusing, and you're familiar with the song, it may be easier for you to use your ears and play what you know. After you've repeated "America" then re-insert the extended note values in measures 40 and

4'1, and include the return to "Dona Nobis Pacem" fo r the last 4 bars. Be careful not to let the tempo drag. As reflective as the music is, it's also meant to be uplifting. Peace.

at Dixie

By Johnny Ray t has been nearly te n years since I began playing the mountain dulcimer and using it in my music classes at Dixie Elementary School in Tyler, Texas. I found the mountain dulcime r to be the perfect instrument for accompanying children's voices as it was soft and didn't drown out their si nging like the piano I was accustomed to using. It also allowed me to sit among my stude nts rathe r than hav ing the barrier of the piano between us. The stude nts were captiva ted by the sound of the dulcimer. I decided they needed to learn to play this instrument and wrote a gra nt proposal to fund the purchase of sixtee n cardboa rd dulcimer kits. We began the mountain dulcimer

program at Dixie in the fa ll of 1996. After teaching a dulcimer unit to all of my fourth a nd fift h grade students, we held audi tions for those who wan ted to be in a dulcimer ensemble and we soon had a nice gro up assembled. Our program increased the following yea r to include a fifth grade adva nced e nsemble of students who had already spent one year in the fourth grade beginning ensemble. It was n't long before we began receiving invitations to perform for vari ous events around our

city. We accepted as ma ny performance invitations as we co uld handle and caught the attention of our local newspaper and television news stations. Before long our du lcimer program had become an excellent public relations tool fo r our school. With th is came the

benefit of added support from the school adm inistration and from the educational foundation that funded the original grant proposal. In the spring of 1999 we held the first Dixie Elementa ry Mountain Dulcimer Festiva l, which has become an an nual event attracting over one-hundred elementary-aged dulcimer playe rs and their teachers. We have been blessed to have several nationally-known dulcimer teachers who volunteer their time to teach at our day-long festiva l. Activities include morning workshops, a pizza lunch, and a n afte rnoon of jam sessions and concerts. By the fall of 1999 we expanded our program to include guitar. The following year we partnered with a local middle school to obtain seventeen McSpadden walnut du lcimer kits. An industrial arts class at the middle school assembled the dulcimers, and they then became part of our program. In 2001 we added auto harps to our folk music program following a similar curriculum and format to the one we developed with the mountain dulcimers. Not only did I want my students to learn to play these instruments, I wanted them to experience playing in a mixed e nsemble. In 2002 we formed a folk orchestra consisting of mountain dulcimers, guitars, a utoharps, a limber jack and a string bass. I add hammer dulcimer to

the mix. We have a folk choir which sings a nd dances to the tunes played by the folk orchestra. Through additional grant funding we will be adding e ight Rick Thurn hammer dulcimers to our program in the fall of 2004. We perform many times each year with nursing homes being one of our favorite venues. At the nursing home concerts, we involve the audience as much as possible. Dulcimer and autoharp players place their instruments on the lap or on the wheel chair of a resident and the students give mini-lessons to the people who have just heard us play. It is great to see the smiles on the faces of these folks as my e lementary students share the joy of playing an instrument with them.

DPN has featured schools and their dulcimer building and playing programs in articles throughout the years. Now we hear of many more individuals and events that involve students from early childhood through high school Johnny Ray has graciously agreed to help us recognize these young people. Please contact himor us - with suggestions and sources. We welcome Johnny to our family of DPN columnists! Johnny Ray 18079 CR 416 Tyler TX 75704 jraysongsinger@yahoo.com 0

Pot Corley ~

e n and Pat Corley we re introduced to the mountain dulcime r nearly fi ftee n yea rs ago but waited two years to pu rc hase one. T here were too many instruments that no one could play hanging around the house gathering dust. Also, Len was to ld in high school that he was tone deaf! Eventually th ey attcndeu a meeting of th e North Georgia

Foot hills Dulcime r Association (NG FDA) where Bill Bu ffi ngton, the preside nt a nd founde r, showed them the bas ics a nd assured them they really could playa tune. Pat and Le n went to the next ga thering and each bought a dulcime r. This was the first of what has become a collection of dulcimers which incl udes two NAMM [National Association o f Music Me rchants] one¡hundredth anniversary comme morative dulcimers (n umbers two and three). One ca n never have too many dulcimers! It was full swing fro m the first tun e! They took pri va te lessons and atte nded all the workshops and fes ti vals Len's work a llowed. A ll vaca tion time was devoted to dulcime r functions such as Western Carolina Unive rsity Dulcimer Workshop, Memphis Du lcimer Festival, Swannanoa, Mars Hill Old Time Music Week, and Ke ntucky Music Week. They believe in

experi encing the music of different instructors as much as possible. Each has something to share with a diffe re nt me thod o f presentation.

The usual response from local music sto res when asked fo r dulcimer strings, books or accessories was, "A what?" After too many such encounters, the Corleys decided to carry strings themselves as a conven ie nce for fri ends and fe llow dulcimer players. Books and instrume nts were soon added to the stock of strings-and Hearth and Fire Folk Music was officially begun. Hearth and Fire represe nted a nywhere from five to seven builders, carrying an inventory of fifteen to twenty instruments. Customers we re welco me to spe nd as much time as they liked playing each instrument to select the o ne that was just right for them. The Corley's desig ned and built a light-weight fo lding music stand wit h pockets for accessories. Pat a lso designed a rubber du lcimer stamp and e mbroiders dulcimers and other designs o n straps. Len and Pat play for many community fun ctions-outdoor fes ti vals, campgrounds, home to urs, wedd ings and recepti ons. In 1993, a friend of Pat's mother heard them play and begged Pat, " Please teach me how! " Word spread and from there her number of studen ts has grow n. She has ta ught classes through the Alpharetta Histo ri cal Socie ty, the City of Roswell, the City of Alpharetta, Seniors Enriched Living, State Parks, Elderhostel and the Roswell Story Telling Fest ival. Pat says it is such a joy to see the thrill in people's eyes when they play their first tunes a nd con tinu e o n with new di scoveries a nd accomplishme nts. The Corleys have been active in the NGFDA, atte nding

the Fall Fest ival a nd Spring Thing almost every yea r. Through the club Len beca me reacquainted wi th two of his high school teachers who took up the dulcimer after retiring. Pat and Len have seen the NGFDA grow from ten members to over three hundred. Le n retired after twe nty years at Lockheed Martin as a machinist in January 2000, and they decided to change their foc us. They now concentrate on teach ing and work ing with public a nd ho me schools. The Corleys designed a wooden du lcimer kit which is laser cut and can be asse mbled ill two to three ho urs. They go to schools and provide the mate rials and inst ruction for the students to assemble their own dulcimers. The school music teachers instruct the students throughout the yea r o n how to play. The same is done at Sta te Parks and Elderhostels for e ithe r weeke nd o r week-long sessio ns where Pat and Len provide several ho urs of playi ng instruction after the instruments a re completed. They enjoy seeing the he ritage of both the instrument and its music carried o n, especia lly thro ugh the younger generation.

come from a musical family. My mothe r and fathe r we re always involved in choirs and loca l cho-

ruses and singing at home was a

way of life. At the age of one-yea r, I was singing the tune to "Ah, Sweet Mys te ry of Life," which my mothe r li ked to play on the Victrola. I was singing in minstrel shows and church socials at age five. I have been a fo lk musician since 1940, whe n, in the fifth grade, another student, Charles Eme rick, and I tea med up to play guitars and to fo rm our duo, the Hartla nd Harmony Boys. N te r high

school, where I was known as "Whistler," I went to Yale University, and sang bass in the glee club unde r the direction of Marshall Ba rth olomew. At the Columbia G rad uate School of Li brary Service I played guitar a nd called square dances fo r the stude nts. Abo ut 1950 I adopted the name The Connecticut Peddle r, hav ing been born in Connecticut, and used the 1841 folk song as my theme. But instead of " needles and pins and seeds of all va riety" I peddled songs a nd tunes out of my collection of severa l hundred. I n graduate school I married Dorothy Hinz, a librarian. I worked at the New York Public Library fo r five yea rs and the n moved to Huntington, Lo ng Island where I was Director of the Hun ti ngto n Public Li brary. In 1974 I became Director of the C1 into n-EssexFranklin Li brary System in Plattsburgh,

New York, and we became acquainted with Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks. Sadly, Dorothy died of cancer in 1979 after twe nty-six years of married life. Music helped my grie f a lot. The next yea r I met my wife Christina, a medical li brarian. I first became acquai nted with the hammered dulcime r in 1980 whe n I borrowed a 12/1 1 hammered dulcime r made by a local folk musician, Rod Driscoll. I worked all wee ke nd trying to play some tunes. N ter that weeke nd I ordered one from Rod, an accom-

plished woodwo rke r as well as a fine musician. My first opportuni ty for ha mmered du lcime r lessons came in 198 1 whe n the No rth Count ry Community College in

Saranac La ke, New Yo rk, offered a week long folk music wo rkshop. I took hamme red dulcime r lessons fro m Paul Van Arsdale. Mitzi Collins, fro m Rochester, was also in the class and amazed us by transcribing all of Paul's tunes overnight so that we had written music the next day. We learned to play Pau l's favorite tunes, such as "Rippling Waters Jig," "Dulcimer Reel," "Two Horse Race," and "Peekaboo Waltz." I began composing in 1964 a nd have created about fifty songs and tunes. I'm inte rested in folklore and I sit on the Boards of the New York Folklore Socie ty a nd Tra ditional Arts in Upstate New York. My song about "Champ, the La ke Champla in Monste r" is popular with school childre n while my song about the closing of "The lronville Mine" is part of the permanent mining exhi bit at the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountai n La ke, New York. After the disastrous ice storm in the Plattsburgh a rea in 1998, when ice was two and three inches thick on bra nches and many of us lacked e lectricity anywhe re from one to th ree weeks, I composed "Ice Storm of 1998" which was played on the local radio station. Many calls came into the statio n requesting a copy so anothe r musician and I duplicated and sold 801 cassettes of the song, donating all of the pro fits to the local Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. After 1980, I incorporated the hammered dulcimer into my regular folk music playing and established a series of hamme red dulcimer wo rkshops through our library system to which all local musicians were invited. OUf first teacher, John McCutcheon, taught us "Backside Alba ny," which he had found in an old fiddle book. Later I learn ed that this tune was a song about the Battle of Plattsburgh, which took place on Se pte mber 11, 1814. In 1985 I attended a weeke nd of hammered du lcimer lessons at the No rtheast Dulcimer Symposium (NDS) in Blue Mountain Lake, New York, orga ni zed by Barb Tru ex and Chris White. T he weeke nd became a weeklong event held at the e nd of June each yea r and is now coordinated by David Moore. At the e nd of each NOS we

galhe r on the shores of Blue Mounta in Lake to discuss the broad topic of dulcimers and folk music. I have attended for many yea rs and have had rewarding lessons from a variety of teachers. One year NOS had a surprise fo r me. As we gathe red fo r our initial session and were introducing ourselves, it was noted that I had been a ttending for sixteen years. David Moore presented me with a bright yellow tee shirt with the music to "Stan Ransom's Hornpipe," a tune Ken Kolodner had writte n in honor of the occasion. All of the students received the tee shi rt -and we had a new tune to learn. By the next Symposium I had composed " Ken Kolodner's H ornpipe." Blessed is the wa rm company of hamme red dulcimer playe rs! In 1988, my brothe r-in-law, Kenneth Butler, a cabinet make r fro m my forme r home town of West Hartland, Connecticut, made me a la rge hamme red dulcimer of curley maple with walnut inlay. It gives a beautiful sound and became my main instrument. About 1990 Mitzi Collins mentioned that she had a Ransom hammered dulcime r for sale, which I quickly purchased. It was made a round 1856 by Henry Ransom, a cousin of my great-grandfathe r's who lived in She rman and in Nunda, New Yo rk. According to Paul M. Gifford's Th e Hammered Dulcim er; a History (Scarecrow Press, 2001 , p. 255): " Many thousand had been ma nufactured by Ransom and sold by him and his agents." H e made hamme red dulcimers in the rectangular box style fro m abo ut 1855 to 1863, when he died. Kennet h

Butler re fini shed my Ransom dulcimer which has a mellow pine top with a bouquet of red roses across the center. I'm not the only hamme red dulcimer playe r in the fa mily. My brother-in-law made a numbe r of dulcimers for other fa mily membcrs. The second weekend in July my wife and I ma ke a pilgrimage to Hartland and play music and have a family re union. My brother plays fivestring ba njo a nd others play stand up bass, guitar and autoharp. In 1985 I acq uired fo r $60 a pine board rectangular dulcime r circa 1840, with three strings to the treble course and two to the bass. It had belonged to a local family, whe re tradition told that a black wo man from the south came up to Keeseville, New York, each summer on he r way to visit relatives in Canada. She'd stop fo r several days at the Go rdo n Johnson residence to play gospel tunes for the fa mily and the community. A second old dulcimer was purchased at auction fo r $20 a few years late r. It was obviously manufactured with fini shed and painted top and sides and was made around 1900. It was owned by Mrs. Jessie Case of Pe ru, New York, who still chopped her own firewood at age 93. She plucked her dulcimer a nd sang with the music. Both of these old, local dulcimers have been presented to the Clinton County Historical Museum in Plattsburgh. My love of old stringed instruments has resulted in a collection of some forty-two of the m, including autoharps, bowed psalteries, vio lins, mo unta in dulcimers, ukeiins, banjos, guitars,

tamburas. nangas, corahs, sitars, mandolins and balalaikas. I give demonstrations at the local grade schools and enjoy playing on some of them in my recordings. 1 perform loca lly at coffeehouses, schools, libraries, nursing homes and handicapped homes, often teaming with a French-Canadian fiddler, Victor Bourdon . The past two yea rs I have been performing Lake Champlain songs the first weeke nd in August at the Champlain Valley Folk Festival in Vermont and also at the Battle of Plattsburgh Celebration in September. Deciding that I needed a new hamme red dulcimer, I contacted James Jones of Bedford, Virginia. In November, 2002 my second knee was replaced. After six days in the hospital and three days at home my dulcimer arrived. Hanging o n to my walker I tuned the eighty strings and played this beautiful instrume nt. The notes soared to heaven, and so did my spirits. That December 1 made my debut with the new dulcimer, sitting and playing for four hours to e ntertain parents and students of Northern Lights Waldorf School in Wilmington, New York. My advice to beginning players is to visit hospitals a nd nursing homes, where they are eager for entertainme nt. People appreciate the music and you have a chance to perform for a rece ptive audience. I am hoping to make at least three more recordings, one of which will be a ha mmered dulcimer instrume ntal. I love the sound of the hammered dulcime r, especially as it blends with guitar, autoharp and other instrume nts. Adding my tag to the Shakespeare quote, I say " U music be the food of love, play on the hammered dulcimer!" Now seventy-six years old, I appreciate even more how music- especia lly the ham mered dulcimer-has enriched my li fe. May it be so for you!

Sheep:

ALesson for Intermediate Mountain Dulcimer Players By Aubrey Atwater Foster. Rhode Island

~

ince the early nineties, I've had the great privilege of spending time with Jean Ritchie. The most regular activity has been in Eastern Kentucky, where about a hundred of us gather every June for the Hindman Settle ment School's Appalachian Family Folk Week. I have heard Jean sing " Over the River to Feed My Sheep" many times, either by herself or with friends a nd relatives. It is is an excellent example of a song played in the old style on the dulcimer- in a lesser-used Dorian tuning, played with the noter. Jean, like many older Appalachian mountain players, doesn't use an electronic tune r but goes for string tension and desired pitch for the voice. She plays in a three-string configuration, fretting the double melody strings with the noter and

letting the other two strings drone. Tune the bass string of your dulcimer to 0 below middle C or a desired pitch. Match the bass string at the fourth fret to the middle string (A note). T hen match the bass string at 3rd fret to the melody strings (G note). You will notice that the melody strings are pitched lower than the middle string. This is one of the aspects of this iuning that I like most. I have a theory that playing with a noter has been left behind in the contemporary dulcimer world because it appears to be "too easy" and at times dissonant. The drone sounds strange to some ears, even "wrong" at times because of the dissonance, but that act ually draws me to the sound. I love to creep to the edge of dissonance which I believe is part of the powerful and ancient emotional impact of mountain music.

and in their absence one-and-a-half tone gaps are created. In this pentatonic melody, wrinen here in the key of 0 minor Dorian, there is no E note ("re") or 8 note ("Ia"). T he sixth tone, "la," in this scale is one of the defining tones that teU us the type of minor mode: Aeolian (8 flat) or Dorian (B natural). Since that note doesn't appear in the song, we never really know. If I noodle a roun d and do some orn ame ntation to include the note, [ lean towards playing the 8 natural, which would make the song Dorian. If you are going to play regu larly in D-A-G, you might want to consider using heavier gauge strings for yo ur melody strings since tuning all the way down to G below the A-note makes the strings f1oppy-sou nding.1ly using 14-ga uge strings. I hope "Over the River to Feed My Sheep" gives you the powerful sense of connection to the distant past that I so love about traditional folk music.

Aubrey Atwater performs and teaches throughout the United States and in other countries both solo and with her husband Elwood Donnelly in the much-acclaimed duo Atwater-Donnelly. In addition to playing and teaching mountain dulcimer. Aubrey sings, clogs, and plays old-time banjo, mandolin, guitar. and tin whistle. Aubrey has written three books, and she and Elwood have just released their eighth recording, The Blackest Crow {see the review in this issue}. Contact them at www.atwater-donnelly.com. To play with a noter, get yourself a three-inch, dowel-like piece of wood, either round or fl at. To fret, press firmly on top with yo ur left thumb (assuming yo u are playing in a righthanded position) and allow yo ur index finger, wh ich is underneath the stick, to gl ide along, flu sh against the side of the fretboard . You rarely lift the noter off the strings, except of course, to play open strings. I encourage players to go beyond the firs t appearances of this simple-looking tab. Using a basic 1,2+ strum panern, which yo u will at times vary, try sliding into notes and syncopating the melody on both dulcimer and vocals. Try ornamenting with triplets and rolls. Think about how yo u can use dynamics and be expressive while playing in this traditional style. One of the many musical gifts I've received from Jean Ritchie is what I consider one of her wonderful signature sounds: using the dulcimer as a harmony voice. When she was a little gi rl, the timbre of the instrument so matched her own voice that she quickly learned to playa harmony part on the dulcimer to strengthen the sonic texture of the song. The harmony I've created is written below the tab. It's an idea that I came up with one morning and I invite you to alter it as you like. Enjoy playing the counter melody against your own voice or playing the two parts as a du et with anot her

From the traditional singing and playing 01 Jean Ritchie. A play party song harking back to the days of Bonny Prince Charlie.

Charlie 's neat and Charlie 's sweet, And Charlie he 's a dand And Charlie he 's the very lad That stole my stripped candy

My pretty little pink, I once did think I never could do without you But now I've lost all hopes of you I care very little about you .. .Chorus

Chorus: Over the river to feed my sheep Over the river, Charlie Over the river to feed my sheep And to measure up my barley

Don 't want your wheat, don 't want your cheat, Neither do I want your barley, But I'll take a little of the best you've got To bake a cake for Charlie ... Chorus 0

Mountain Dulcimer Tales &Traditions by Ralph Lee Smith

A Beautiful Scheitholt & A Rare Kratz-Zither Two readers have recently led me to two wo nderful old instrume nts and to their owners. It turns that both instruments have had adven tures that include Western traveling. The scheit holt apparen tly did some homesteading in North Dakota, Laura Ingalls style, a nd the kra tz-zither did some pioneering in Oklahoma!

1914. He married Mary He rtzler, from Newport News, and bought a farm near Stuart's Draft, Virginia, where I was born in 1948. From the time I was little, I can remember my mom picking and singi ng songs on the "dulcime r" as she called it. "There is a handwritten message on the back, which, because it was fading away, my dad rewrote on paper which he glued to the back of the instrume nt. ... I don't know who wrote the message; it may have been my Dad's oldest sister." Bob supplied the following dimensions: Overall length: 37li inches Body Height: 3 inches Body Width: 3 inches

The Landes/Grove Scheitholt A few months ago, lanita Baker, who, with her husband, Robert, lives in Santa Margarita, Californ ia, where they make Blue Lion Dulcimers, sent me an e mail with jpeg attachments showing an outstandingly beautiful scheitholt. Three of the photos accompa ny this article. " I'm sending yo u some photos of an instrument that came into our shop yesterday for a repair," she wrote. HThe owner, Robert Grove, got it from his father who go t it from his father. There is no labe l inside; on the back of the instrument, still faintly legible, is a handw ritten label that says:

"Dulcimer wa . . in my home as/ar back as I remember before 1900" Janita put me in touch with Robert, who lives about twenty miles fro m Bob and Janita. He provided me with the fascinating tale that follows. "Everything I know about it [the scheitholt) isn't much, I'm afraid. But the history is solid back to my great gra ndma, Na nny C. Landes, born near Harrisonburg, Virginia, in the mid-1800's. My uncle thought it was made for the wedd ing of Nan ny's father, John (or possibly Daniel) Landes. If so, that wou ld be in the mid '1800's. The Landes' came to the Shenandoah Valley from eastern Pennsylvania, as I understand it, most likely in the early 1800's. " Na nny married Mose Wenger from the same area and they had a daughter, Emma, born in 1885 . Emma married Isaac E. Grove, my gra ndfather, who was born in the area between Stau nton and Harrisonburg, Virginia. The Groves had come fro m Lancaster, Pennsylvania to the Shenandoah Valley (Augusta County) earlier. There is evidence that Martin Grove bought land near New Hope, Virginia in 1793. Martin Grove was the great grandfat her of Isaac E . Grove. "Once married, Isaac and Emma homesteaded in Nort h Dakota for five years, starting in 1908. They then moved back to Virginia, where they bought a farm near Lyndhurst. During their stay in North Dakota, grandma Nan ny also came out to homestead an adjace nt section of land, which Isaac farmed. It is likely the scheitholt was in Nort h Dakota during that time. 'The schei tholt was passed down through Emma to my father, Irvi n E. Grove, born on the farm near Lyndhurst in

Vibrating string le ngth: 27V, inches "The top and bottom strin gs are the same length," he wrote. "The middle strin g is 28 inches from nut to lower bridge."

A Kratz-Zither That Went Pioneering Soon after Janita contacted me about the scheitholt, DPN reade r Pau l Bostick of Stillwater, Oklahoma, sent me a message that read in part, " I was recently in Ponca City, Oklahoma, visiting the Pioneer Woman Museum [of the Oklahoma Historical Society). and saw what was described as a pre-Civil War dulcimer. The melody string side is straight with the sound box curving out. It looks like an elongated ' D' when viewed from the top. The string arrangement is one that I have not seen before. It has three melody strings close together with staples under the strings for frets. Two bass strings are separated from the me lody strings by at least a 1.5 to 2 inch space, no frets under the bass strings." The museum's information on the instru ment is as follows: • The instrume nt was donated in 1964 by Mrs. W. E. Cullen of Ponca City. • It was brought to Oklahoma by the great-grandfathe r of W. E. C ulle n, whose grandfa ther made the instrume nt in Marion, Kentucky, before the Civil War.

Paul put me in touch with Valerie Haynes, Director of the Museum, who kindly took the three pictures shown here. She also provided the dimensions: Length: 33lO inches. Height of body: 2V, inches Width at widest point: 5){ inches This instrume nt is of a type that is rare in Arnerica: a cousin of the standa rd straight-sided scheitholt with a curve or bulge on the side facing away from the player. I once saw such an instrument illustrated in a book about European musical instruments, with a caption that called it a "kratz-

STEP UP FROM THE ORDINARY zither. " [ don't know if this is a n accurate name for this type of Instrume nt, but I have adopted it because it is useful to have a descriptive term of some kind ! T he bulge on the right-hand side of these instruments some times forms a semi-circle, a nd sometimes flows smoothly in a n outward curve. The collection of the late Anne Grimes, which was acquired by the Smithsonia n Institution, includes a n instrument of the latter type. The instrument is shown here. [ took a picture of it when I visited A nne some twe nty yea rs ago. However, the instrument in the Woma n's Museum is the o nly one [ have ever seen in which the bulge forms a continuous curve from the foot to the peghead. Both of these instruments are historically im portant finds. Step by step, we a re uncovering the buried history of the dulcime r and its ancesto rs. Please keep those emails coming!

The Art of Performing by Steve Schneider

Getting More From Your Dulcimer Lessons e all have a lot to learn! And we all have a lot to learn about learning! In past DPNs I've writte n about getting more from your practicing, an activity without which music lessons don't make a lot of sense. Practicing is about you, yo ur time, and how yo u spend it. Working with a teacher, on the other hand, is an interactive experience and relationship, the success of which is dependent upon the honest exchange between teache r and stude nt. I fee l qualified to write something about music lessons since I've been (and still am) both a music student and teacher. I, too, play it " perfectly" at home. I, too, struggle to make practicing the true priority that it is. I, too, get confused and feel overwhelmed by a ll the myriad issues that exist on the road toward improving my musicianship. I've been there, I'm still there, a nd I appreciate the challenges that teaching a nd learning constantly present to me. Studying music is a n incredible luxury and inves tme nt, and the more you put into

dulcimer teachers are plentiful in some areas, scarce in others. You're lucky if you have teachers within a reasonable driving distance, and you're blessed if you have a choice of teachers. Regardless, the more clear yo u can be about wha t you want, the greater the chances that your teacher can help you meet your goals. As I've written in previous articles, practice does not make perfect. I know that personally and professionally. Perfection is not a reasonable or rational goal, so we're safe

from that myt h. At the same time, practicing makes music lessons really wort hwhile. Of course you can discuss things, understand them, be able to articulate them, and feel good about learning them, but it's not until you put things into practice that you truly come to know them. Practice takes ideas and concepts and turns them into real understanding. There's not a lot of forward movement without some consistent practicing. It's sort of like dieting; you can cheat a little sometimes, but when you do it too much you lose goals instead of weight! Play music yo u love. If you don't, you won't be as motivated to play or practice and it defeats the purpose of studying dulcimer. There is so much music to choose from that it can be incredibly exciting when it comes to choosing what repertoire you want to

Arrive at yo ur lesson on time (if not early) to get your money's worth, and make sure your dulcimer is in tune and

ready for act ion. Jfyou can't find the right (or any) dulcimer teacher near you, consider finding a local music teacher who

might be willing to work with you. A good piano or guitar teacher could be incredibly helpful on many levels and with many issues of yo ur music. Any music learning will help your playing in some ways, even if yo u're not learn ing directly on a dulcimer. When it comes to music learning, just say yes ! Go to festivals, take works hops, go to concerts, go to jam sessions, listen closely to other musicians, get actively involved in a du lcimer club, and perform. But , whe n it comes to learning music and becoming a more capable and ful filled musician, there's nothing like working with the right teacher and, of course, practicing effectively. Please write to me at mail @steveschneider.com with your reactions to this article or wit h topics you might want to see covered in this series-and stay in tune. 0

learn next.

Listen to your teacher, and do yo ur homework. Ask questions when there's something you don't understand. Keep a notebook with both your assignments and yo ur practice log. If your teacher is wi lling, use him or her as a resource outside

your lesson time through email or telephone. Organize your written music for ease of use when you practice. Make sure you have enough time to practice between lessons and go to your scheduled lessons whet her or not yo u've had a chance to practice (un less this becomes habitual and needs to be addressed). Try to take lessons on a regular schedu le-weekly or biweekly, for example. Take good notes during your lesson. There's no way you can remember it all if yo u don't write it down . lJyou have time to use it when you return home, record the lesson or even videotape if you r teacher is comfortable with that. Get a good night's sleep afte r a lesson. Research shows that we learn more effectively when we can "sleep on it"

afterward. Our brains conti nue to work on what we're trying to learn even after a lesson, and they apparently do it better while we're sleeping. The late Victor Borge, musician, comedian, and visionary, said that he act ually learned to speak Japanese by listening to tapes while he slept. His only problem was that he could only speak Japanese in his sleep! Don't confess yo ur sins to your teacher! Try to start yo ur lessons off wit h reports of your progress a nd don't focus on all the things you didn't get to do. You're not expected to be perfect. Focusing on the posi tive keeps everything constructive and affirmative, and these are much better conditions in which

to learn. Orrer your teachers feedback; tell them what's working and how they're doing with regard to meeting yo ur goals. Ask your teacher for feedback about your progress. Find out what yo u might be doing to enhance your learning experience. Together, teacher and student form a working relatio nship that is fueled and fed by effective communication.
