The Art of Building

The Sackler Centre for Arts Education

Why is John Soane such an admired architect? What is so special about the Dulwich Picture Gallery buildings?

How have the buildings changed and evolved to meet 21st century needs?

What were the materials, methods and processes involved in the making of the building? For the first time in its history John Soane’s Dulwich Picture Gallery is being looked at in a new way.

An understanding of buildings and their local context is usually reserved for the professionals rather than the general public.

The Internal Gallery Space Dulwich Picture Gallery is turned inside out. An intriguing “Rachel Whiteread” style model shows the internal spaces, and illustrates the cube and double cube basis of the Gallery. Soane’s Alternative Designs Soane designed 12 variations of Dulwich Picture Gallery. Hand painted building blocks can re-create all 11 alternatives.

New programmes explore how buildings work and are designed to appeal to children, adults, families, and cannot fail to interest the professionals.

• Drawing perspective and symmetry • Buildings in the Landscape, mixed media practical art studio sessions • Building exploration workshops with hands on models

Building History Mapping activities illustrate the changing local built environment from before the Gallery opened in 1817 to the present day.

Making an Arch A fascinating set of 1800’s style construction materials offers the challenge of creating an archway the ‘Soane’ way.

Programmes include: • Architecture tours of the building • Architecture tours of the local area • Drawing architectural details

Construction Miniature clay bricks illustrate the complexities of bricklaying and bonding. Soane’s use of brick created an extraordinary building, find out how.

The Art of Shelter Looking at the purpose of buildings and originating a ground plan from a 3D model.

Creating a Dome A construction activity to explain the complexity of a dome.
