Civilised Our café offers delicious food in a sophisticated contemporary extension – an award-winning building by architect Rick Mather – with views of the Gallery and its beautiful grounds

Salvator Rosa (1615–1673): Bandits, Wilderness and Magic

Chapel Openings You can enter Christ’s Chapel of Alleyn’s College of God’s Gift from Dulwich Picture Gallery’s cloister. The chapel was consecrated in 1616 by George Abbot, Archbishop of Canterbury, as part of the Dulwich College Foundation Every Tuesday 1.30–3.30pm

15 September – 28 November Salvator Rosa invented novel allegorical pictures, fanciful portraits of romantic and enigmatic figures, both macabre and horrific; highly original and philosophical subjects. No other artist has created windswept landscapes of such emotional power, or figures of such dark intensity. Unlike Caravaggio, Rosa was truly a rebel, radical, anti-clerical, associated with libertine thought, and often in real danger from the Inquisition The exhibition has been supported by The Arthur and Holly Magill Foundation

Exhibitions and Displays in 2010/11 Norman Rockwell’s America

Sculpture in the Garden: Peter Randall-Page’s Walking the Dog The sculpture will be unveiled to coincide with the Salvator Rosa exhibition. The sculpture has been given to the Gallery by the Art Fund to celebrate the Gallery’s 200th anniversary in 2011

15 December 2010 – 27 March 2011 Norman Rockwell was America’s best-known and best-loved illustrator for over six decades of the 20th century. Astonishingly prolific, he is best known for the 322 covers he created for the Saturday Evening Post, and countless other magazine illustrations and advertisements, capturing images of everyday American life with a humour and power of observation that spoke directly to the public, whose love for his work never wavered

Masterpiece a Month: Presiding Genius One every month from January – December 2011 As a celebration of the Gallery’s bicentenary, during each month of 2011 a masterpiece will be on show at the end of Sir John Soane’s famous enfilade. Each work will be a show-stopper borrowed from a major international institution with a historical link to the Gallery. This will include works by Velazquez, El Greco, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Ingres, Van Gogh, Constable, Domenichino, David Hockney and many others

The connections are highlighted by comparing the key themes of Arcadia and the pastoral, passion and love, violence and war, and mythological figures that are central to both artists’ work

Tuesday Evening Lecture Series Watercolour, Oils, Acrylic

Painting in Watercolour: the Light in the Pigment

10.30–11.30am Linbury Room Applying paint to surface enables artists to express what they want the viewer to see and comprehend. But materials have their own secrets to reveal, their own genius. Showing paintings over the centuries, three experts explore the artists’ choices, the limitations and versatility of different paints and reveal how artists use them to communicate their art

Wednesday 17 November Everybody starts with watercolour, but very few ever master its subtleties. It is the sketcher’s medium, portable and quick-drying whilst Cézanne or Paul Klee treat it like stained glass, overlaying blocks of transparent colour. This is a wide-ranging exploration of what watercolour is really capable of. Timothy Wilcox curated The Triumph of Watercolour, at Dulwich Picture Gallery in 2005

Crossing Frontiers: a Journey through Art

Travellers’ Tales: Italian Art through the Eyes of Victorian Travellers

7.45–9.15pm Linbury Room

Tuesday 28 September Italy, in the mid-nineteenth century, may have been a collection of poor, fragmented states, but it was also the destination for many English travellers. Byron, Ruskin, the Brownings and Dickens all travelled there, and wrote of the art and culture they discovered. In this talk we’ll explore the history of Italian painting through the eyes of such travellers, discovering how they reacted to the early Renaissance beauty of Fra Angelico or the turbulent exuberance of Tintoretto Lecturer: Jo Walton

This series examines art from around the world and will show how art in different countries and periods varies and that there can also be surprising similarities Series of 6 lectures £50, £40 Friends Single lectures £10, £8 Friends Bar in the interval Art Down Under: Australian Art from the Convict Years to the Modern Era Tuesday 21 September Dreamtime, convicts and early settlers – artistic responses to life in the strange new continent were initially seen through European, and especially British, artistic traditions. In the 19th century, Australian Impressionism & the Heidelberg School challenged the dominance of the ‘Victorian’ style. The First World War was a watershed in Australian and New Zealand history. Artists found their own language to depict the unique landscape and culture Down Under. At the same time, indigenous artists began to respond to contemporary life Lecturer: Val Woodgate

Degenerates and others – German Art in the 20th Century Tuesday 5 October Many major German artists, along with others from elsewhere in Europe, were reviled by the Nazis and included in the Entartete Kunst (Degenerate Art) exhibition in Munich in 1937, but innovative and exciting German art started much earlier, with the Expressionist Die Brücke group in 1905 and Der Blaue Reiter in 1911. This lecture examines these early modern movements, looks at Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) of the 1920s and antiNazi art, coming right up to date with controversial and imaginative artists such as Joseph Beuys, Rebecca Horn and Anselm Kiefer Lecturer: Frank Woodgate Constructing the Future: Early 20th Century Russian Art Tuesday 12 October After the break-up of the Soviet Union and with the re-invigoration of Russia as an economic and political force, there has been a growing interest in Russian art. Russian buyers have made great efforts to ‘repatriate’ their artistic heritage. Moreover, recent exhibitions in London have underlined the importance of the Russian avant-garde in the development of modern art in the early 20th century. This talk will explore the work of some of the key figures, such as Kandinsky, Malevich and Goncharova Lecturer: Peter Scott

Futurism, “Poor Art” and Provocation: Italian 20th and 21st Century Art Tuesday 19 October Italian artists of the 20th Century sought to break with the art of the past, to provoke and challenge notions of what art should be. The Italian Futurists celebrated industrialism and the machine, they encouraged radicalism and later supported Mussolini. This talk will look at other important and innovative Italian artists including Modigliani, Morandi and the “Arte Povera” group who used inexpensive, everyday materials to create their art works. It will also explore how Italian artists are still continuing to shake things up today Lecturer: Melanie Paice
