The collection is also one of the oldest in Great Britain, substantially put together during the 1790s. The paintings are housed in the first purpose-built art gallery in England, designed by Sir John Soane in 1811

Reconstructing a Renaissance Masterpiece Exhibition extended to 10 May 2009 In the late 18th century this huge altarpiece was butchered for the art market. Three large sections have survived, at Dulwich, at the National Gallery of Scotland, and the National Gallery of Canada. This display brings these fragments together again for the first time – and includes a newly discovered fourth fragment

Venice inspired some of Sickert’s most ravishing work. It was here that Sickert really found his identity as an artist, painting studies of St Mark’s Basilica, inspired by Monet. Later he moved indoors and experimented with figures in interiors. This is the first time that Sickert’s magical Venetian oeuvre has been seen together

Drawing Attention
16 June – 27 September 2009 In 1790 the last King of Poland commissioned two art dealers to buy paintings to establish Poland’s national collection. However he was forced to abdicate and the works became the collection at Dulwich Picture Gallery. Spectacular state portraits, on loan from Poland, of King Stanislaw Augustus Poniatowski, will be shown here for the first time in the UK. In addition to these loans, work by Antoni Malinowski, the distinguished Polish contemporary artist, will link Dulwich Picture Gallery and Warsaw’s Royal Castle. Malinowski’s work is a meditation on light, colour, painting and the enduring significance of ephemeral gestures, and will be both inside and outside the Gallery.
Rembrandt, Tiepolo, Van Gogh, Picasso & more Master Drawings from the Art Gallery of Ontario 21 October – 17 January 2010 The Art Gallery of Ontario has put together a great collection of drawings. This group of a hundred of its best works ranges from Renaissance Italy to modern times. It includes Guercino, Boucher, Gainsborough, Ingres, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Turner, Léger, De Kooning, and Canada’s remarkable Tom Thomson
Desperately Seeking Conservation Autumn (dates to be confirmed) A display of rarely seen Gallery paintings in need of conservation. Adopt an Old Master was started in 1988 to conserve the collection and over 120 paintings have been adopted. But there are still many paintings which are in desperate need of attention. What the conservators uncover during conservation provides both a context for scholarly research and for visitor enjoyment. The collection can be preserved for generations to come, but this is only possible thanks to the generous support of visitors who adopt. Could you be one of them?

Best of British The Story of the British Collection at Dulwich Picture Gallery 8 July – 27 September Dulwich Picture Gallery will be exhibiting paintings from its newly catalogued British collection, many of which are not usually on show. The exhibition will not only display the original collection, but will also show paintings bequeathed by other collectors – including the significant group of actors’ portraits from Shakespeare’s time – and the display will offer a fascinating insight into English notions of taste and the fashion to collect from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. There is no charge for this exhibition
Paul Nash: the Elements 10 February – 9 May 2010 Paul Nash (1889 – 1946) painted beautiful landscapes of the Downs, strange flooded rooms, and classic images of two World Wars. The exhibition includes paintings, watercolours and photographs from the whole of his career, showing how he selected elementary objects, to put them in relationships of conflict or harmony, and found pathways, nests and thresholds between them and within them

Hire the gallery Dulwich Picture Gallery can be hired for a large variety of events – from formal dinners and canapé receptions to concerts, private tours and garden parties. Weddings The Gallery holds a Civil Marriage and Civil Partnership Licence with Southwark Council. The events team is experienced in catering for very special days in both the Gallery and the Linbury Room and the gardens.

The Tudor House and Garden Wednesday 3 June Throughout the Tudor period, houses became more ‘outward looking’ with elaborate gardens and courts. Interest in Renaissance ideas of order and harmony resulted in a desire to control nature. This talk will concentrate on the powerful Cecil family (Lord Burghley, the Earl of Exeter and the Earl of Salisbury) who created the most magnificent houses and gardens of the period Paula Henderson’s book, The Tudor House and Garden, won the Berger Prize for the outstanding contribution to the history of British art for 2000
Jane Brown’s books include The Modern Garden, The Garden at Buckingham Palace, Vita’s Other World and The Pursuit of Paradise The Outdoor Room Wednesday 1 July In the early twentieth century modernist emphasis on the integration of the inside and outside led to the idea of the garden as the ‘outdoor room’. Designs used plants for structure, less for decoration. This talk looks at the development of the genre, the work of John Brookes and others and at modern-day interpretations of the outdoor room.

This walk will take us through Hogarth’s London seeing some of his pictures. Starting at St Bart’s, walking past his birthplace to St Paul’s Churchyard and on to the Soane Museum, Covent Garden (where he studied – and eloped) and Leicester Square (where he lived and worked), ending at the Foundling Museum where he was a founding governor. 2009 is the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death. He lived at 25 Brook Street for thirty-six years and composed many of his most famous works there. The Handel House Museum is a historic house where eighteenth century paintings and prints provide a backdrop to Handel’s life. Upper Norwood Triangle & Pissarro Walk Sunday 19 July 2.30–4.30pm Meet outside Gipsy Hill BR Station This walk will go up Westow Hill and around the Crystal Palace triangle, looking at some of the lesser known but interesting buildings. GalleryFilm for Kids event Visual Effects talk by Sue Rowe Sunday 10 May 2–3pm Visual Effects Supervisor Sue Rowe talks about her work and shows examples included in our Oscar and Bafta winning film The Golden Compass. She and her team created the visual effects including 15 photorealistic CG daemon animal characters ranging from a chameleon to a panther, also the spectacular battle sequence at Bolvangar, as well as 3D vehicles and the extraordinary views of Lyra’s London. Sue won the 2008 Panalux Craft Award at the annual Women in Film and Television Awards. She is one of the worlds few female Visual Effects Supervisors.

About The Friends Joining the Friends is an easy introduction to supporting the Gallery. The Friends play an important role in the life and work of the Gallery. They make regular contributions to the Gallery’s running costs and the Education Programme, which has a national and international reputation for the quality and variety of its work Friends enjoy unlimited free entry to the Gallery, special exhibitions and are invited to private views. They are entitled to discounts on most events The Friends provide financial support for conservation, exhibitions and other projects. Each year they organise concerts, lectures, social events and visits to places of artistic and historic interest
