The Polish Connection

Ends 27 September Dulwich Picture Gallery will be exhibiting paintings from its newly catalogued British collection, many of which are not usually on show. The exhibition will not only display the original collection, but will also show paintings bequeathed by other collectors – including the significant group of actors’ portraits from Shakespeare’s time – offering a fascinating insight into English notions of taste and the fashion to collect from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century.

Ends 27 September In 1790 the last King of Poland commissioned two art dealers to buy paintings to establish Poland’s national collection. However he was forced to abdicate and the works became the collection at Dulwich Picture Gallery. Spectacular state portraits, on loan from Poland, of King Stanislaw August Poniatowski, will be shown here for the first time in the UK.

In addition to these loans, work by Antoni Malinowski, the distinguished Polish contemporary artist, will link Dulwich Picture Gallery and Warsaw’s Royal Castle. The exhibition is part of: Dulwich Picture Gallery is grateful for its partnership with the Polish National Tourist Office in support of The Polish Connection as part of Polska! Tuesday Evening Lectures Aspects of Art: Classical, Beautiful, Sublime 7.45–9.15pm in Linbury Room Bar and book sales in the interval This series coincides with Tate Britain’s exhibition Turner and the Masters (23 September 2009 to 24 January 2010). Each lecture will demonstrate the way in which the art of the past has been continually renewed, updated and transformed by a succession of great artists Turner and the Masters Tuesday 20 October This lecture, directly linked to Tate Britain’s exhibition examines Turner’s response to the art of great and much-loved artists of the past. Direct comparisons with the works of masters such as Canaletto, Claude, Poussin, Rubens are included as well as works by his contemporaries: Constable, Bonnington and others. The exhibition shows how Turner established his reputation as one of Europe’s greatest landscape painters. More than any other 19th century artist he set out to challenge and surpass the old masters Val Woodgate

The American Sublime Tuesday 27 October The art of North America is often startlingly original, none more so than in landscape painting of the mid- nineteenth century. This lecture explores how artists responded to the opening up of the Interior, reflecting the original meaning of the word ’awesome’. They drew inspiration from Turner and other European landscape artists, who studied and sought to portray the Sublime, but gave their works a distinctly American feel. The most popular paintings were ‘theatrical’ in treatment and presentation, but there was the underlying political message that it was the ‘manifest destiny’ of the U.S. to subdue and occupy the continent given to them by providence Peter Scott

Special Lectures The Landscape Art of Andy Goldsworthy: Revealing the Beauty of Nature Tuesday 3 November Goldsworthy is one of the most interesting and innovative landscape artists working in Britain today. Mostly working in the open air, using natural materials such as leaves, ice, stones or trees he makes exquisite but usually ephemeral images. His love of the British landscape makes him comparable to Constable, but his way of transforming relatively ordinary scenes makes him more akin to Turner. This lecture will consider his work in the context of Land Art as practised since the late 1970s by artists such as Robert Smithson and Walter de Maria in the USA, and in the UK by Richard Long and Ian Hamilton-Finlay. Other examples of large-scale art in the landscape, such as the Angel of the North and the proposed gigantic white horse in Kent will also be covered Frank Woodgate

From the Sublime to the Political Tuesday 10 November Abstract Expressionism achieved a dominant role in avant-garde art in the period following World War Two. Born in the USA, it certainly has affinities with the expansive sweep of American landscape painting of the previous century, and has been seen as a modern version of the Sublime. This lecture looks at the work of important figures like Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, investigating their links with the landscape tradition on both sides of the Atlantic, and the influence of more recent European ideas like Surrealism. It also looks at the part this art came to play in the politics of the Cold War Linda Smith All four speakers lecture extensively for Tate Britain, Tate Modern, throughout Britain and internationally

The Conversation Piece: Scenes of Fashionable Life

A fascinating example of 1930s modernism, Grade II listed Dorich House stands on the Kingston side of Richmond Park. Its severe exterior conceals a warm and exotic interior created by the original owners, Hon. Richard Hare and his wife, Dora Gordine, a well-known sculptor. From the 1940s the couple embarked on an ambitious project to build a collection of the then unfashionable art and sculpture from old Imperial Russia
