The frustration felt by many people in Dundalk in relation to the introduction of water charges is on the rise given the number of protests being organised in town over the past week. In a reflection of the mood across the country, many locals have come out to voice their anger at the latest charge being imposed by the Government. Residents from O’Hanlon Park and Hillview were the latest community to protest against the installation of water meters last Thursday morning. Workers from Irish Water arrived at 8am to install the meters and were met by a number of residents who

Plans for the Dundalk Festival of Light and Culture for 2014 are currently being finalised with an exciting programme set to be announced in the coming weeks. The festival, which heralds the start of Dundalk’s Christmas season and sees the town illuminated over its two day run, will this year take place on Friday and Saturday , November 28 and 29. Features of the festival along with the amazing illumination of town centre buildings have included fireworks, Santa, ice skating, children’s amusements, markets, live music, dancing and much more. The Dundalk Festival of Light & Culture organising committee features representation from local retail and voluntary groups including Dundalk BIDS, Marshes Shopping Centre, Dundalk Chamber of Commerce and Dundalk Tidy Towns, and supported by Louth County Coun-
cil. This core group has been working steadily in the background to put together plans for the annual event which annually attracts thousands of people to the Dundalk Town Centre. Harry Traynor, Marshes Shopping Centre who has been involved with the Dundalk Festival of Light & Culture since its inception, said this year’s festival is set to feature a mix of returning favourites plus new attractions. “We recognise each year what has been a success and keep them in mind for a return to the festival, if possible. But we also like to see the festival evolve and to do so we hope to bring something new each year, so there are sure to be some new events in the programme. Edel O’Mahony is enjoying the experience of being involved in the Festival of Light and Culture in her first Christmas as Dundalk BIDS Manager. “It is a pleasure to be
involved in the Dundalk Festival of Light and Culture. Everyone has been working away over the months, each with a valued contribution to make. Dundalk BIDS plays a central role in ensuring that many of the events can take place, in particular the new attractions and I’m looking forward to the positive response from the public when all plans are finalised and we can unveil the 2014 festival programme. The Dundalk Festival of Light and Culture 2014 programme will be announced in the coming weeks.

Neighbours had 400 pairs of shoes in flats
Dundalk Leader 8th October 2014
Three people who admitted having 400 pairs of shoes between them in their neighbouring flats, pleaded guilty to charges of handling stolen property when they appeared at Dundalk District Court. Kelly Flynn of Flat 4, 49 Park St, Dundalk, John Hoey of Flat 2, 50 Park St, Dundalk, and Stefan Bass of Flat 1, 50 Park St, Dundalk, told the court that their actions were fuelled by alcohol and the belief that there was something to be gained. Insp Martin Beggy stated that a woman who was storing designer shoes and boots in a premises in Anne St from March, became aware on July 13 last year that the
shoes had been stolen. Gardai conducted searches of Mr Bass’s property where they found 230 pairs of shoes, 160 pairs in Mr Hoey’s flat, and a further ten pairs in Ms Flynn’s flat. Solicitor, Paul McArdle, acting for Ms Flynn, stated that his 21-year-old client had been in a relationship with Mr Bass with whom she had a daughter. She admitted everything to Gardai at the time and had never been in difficulty before. He added that she had been under the influence of one of the other defendants, and that she apologised for her actions. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, acting on behalf of the other two defendants, stated that the shoes
had been in the flats when they moved in. He admitted that they suspected they were stolen but didn’t do anything about it. “They didn’t try to sell them or dispose of them and you wonder what was the whole point of the escapade with a notion fuelled by alcohol that there might be something in it”, stated Mr McDonnell who added that the property had been recovered. He pointed out that 21-year-old Mr Hoey and 22-year-old Mr Bass had never been in trouble before. Judge William Hamill found the facts proven and dismissed the case against Ms Flynn, while Mr Hoey and Mr Bass were both convicted and fined €350.

Dundalk FC launch YouTube video By Paul Byrne
The story of Dundalk Football Club has gone global with the posting of a YouTube video produced on the club’s behalf by sponsors Fyffes. The video, which was formally launched by Fyffes Ireland managing director Gerry Cunningham at a reception held in their premises in Swords last weekend has already been widely acclaimed by team members and officials, many of whom star in the production. Long-standing supporters of the Dundalk club, Fyffes undertook to fund and oversee the production seeing it as a measure that would help bring the story of the club to a new and younger generation of football enthusiasts, here and overseas. ers, supporters, officials and the people of Dundalk generally – qualities that have helped it overcome adversity and rise to become one of Ireland’s premier clubs - the 2-minutes 30-seconds long production captures in every detail what Dundalk FC means to the town and those who take pride in its performance. In light of their recent EA Sports Cup success, their performance in the current league itself
plus their distinguished record of success in competitions generally and the possibility of a place in European competition next year, it is hoped that the video will help the club broaden its fan base while being an important communications link that domestic and overseas audiences can access. According to Fyffes Ireland managing director Gerry Cunningham, himself an avid Dundalk FC supporter, the
production will place the club in the premier league in terms of its online communications, putting it on a par with major UK and Continental clubs who use YouTube as an avenue in reaching out to supporters wherever they may be. In a comment, Dundalk club manager Stephen Kenny said ‘the video will be invaluable in appealing to players and fans alike, in marketing the club.

Tourism Jobs According to a report published by the Restaurant Association of Ireland, 584 new jobs in the Food, Tourism and Hospitality sectors have been created in Louth since the reduced VAT rate of 9% was introduced in July 2011. To highlight the scale of job creation, the Report compares the number of direct new jobs to a major local employer, revealing that the 584 extra jobs created in Louth is nearly the same as the number of employees also employed in Louth by Louth County Council
ton Foundation, and his wife Carmel Naughton in presenting the 25 winning students with their awards at the ceremony. The scholarship in each of the twenty counties is worth €20,000 with an additional 5 scholarships being awarded throughout the counties. The school of each winning student was also awarded a prize of €1,000 towards the school’s science laboratory to encourage interest, research and further academic pursuit. This bursary for schools has proven very beneficial in the county to date. Established in January 2008, the Naughton Foundation scholarships are a scheme of bursaries introduced to promote the study of engineering, science and technology in any publicly funded university or third-level institution in Ireland, including the North.
Hotel guest refused to leave for Gardai A man who was causing annoyance to guests in a local hotel told Gardai to “f*** off” when they asked him to leave the premises. As a result, John Bollard of 8 Ring Fort Close, Balrothery, Balbriggan, pleaded guilty to three public order charges when he appeared at Dundalk District Court. Insp Martin Beggy revealed that on April 12 this year, Gardai were called to the Crowne Plaza Hotel, where a number of guests had refused staff requests to leave after causing annoyance to others. They refused to leave for Gardai and rejected an offer of a refund, with Mr Bollard telling the officers to “f*** off”, and insisting that he was on private property. Gardai reminded him that he was in a public place and outlined the penalties for not complying with their directions. Again he told them to “f*** off “ and said he would beat them. He had to be restrained while being arrested. Solicitor, Sean T O’Reilly, stated
that his client, who had 86 previous convictions, had been an addict who was now off methadone. “On the night he was staying in the hotel and had more drink than was good for him. A number of people were involved in the incident but he was the ringleader and shouldn’t have said what he did to the Gardai”, said Mr O’Reilly. The father of two teenage children is currently employed in the family business and hopes he has turned the corner. Mr O”Reilly added that while he has an atrocious record, most of the crimes were committed while he was on drugs. In respect of the charge of failing to comply with the direction of a Garda, Judge William Hamill adjourned the case to November 26 for a Community Service Report. He recommended 120 hours Community Service in lieu of three months in prison. For the charge of threatening and abusive behaviour he imposed a €350 fine, taking a third public order charge into account.

Sorry for reaction to Gardai A man who arrived on the scene when Gardai were dealing with some family members apologised at Dundalk District Court for his reaction. Thomas Maguire of 235 Cedarwood Park, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to a public order charge arising out of the incident on October 8 last year. The court heard that on that day, Gardai had been aware of
an incident between two families and received information that a large number of people were gathering in the Cedarwood Park area. When Gardai arrived at 7pm they managed to calm things down but at 8pm Mr Maguire arrived, became agitated and started shouting. He had to be restrained and that caused the initial incident
to flare up before he was taken away by family members.
Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client arrived to see the Gardai dealing with family members and he reacted because he thought there was trouble at his door. He apologised for his actions. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €200 fine.

Train passengers caused disturbance Two men who were causing a disturbance on a train from Dublin to Newry pleaded guilty to public order charges when they appeared at Dundalk District Court.
Gavin McAlary of 21 Station Close, Newry, Co Down, and Paddy Moan of 31 Willow Park, Newry, admitted the offences arising out of an incident on September 25 this year.

Mr McAlary was told three times to leave the train station but failed to do so and was arrested for being intoxicated in a public place and failing to comply with the direction of a Garda.

The annual nine-day Novena to St. Gerard Majella begins today (Wednesday October 8) and will continue until his feast day on October 16. Sinn Féin County Councillor Tomás Sharkey has reacted to the news that Bill Maher has been appointed as CEO of the Dublin North East Group of hospitals by the HSE. “The HSE has grouped Louth County Hospital, Our Lady of Lourdes in Drogheda, Monaghan, Cavan, Beaumont, Connolly in Blanchardstown and the
Rotunda as one hospital group. “In Dundalk and Louth we know that this means our hospital is the small minnow in a large pond. We have lost services down the years under the pretence that the bigger hospitals were safer places to go when sick. “The HSE ignore the fact that actually getting to the larger hospitals,

Castlebellingham was the venue for a dignified and sombre event on Friday last at which a new World War I commemorative plaque was unveiled. Among those in attendance was Donal Hall, author of ‘The Unreturned Army’, who gave a talk on the Louth men who fought and died in the Great War. A lone piper played appropriate melodies including ‘The Flowers of the Forest’ and ‘The Last Post’. Heber Russell, whose mother was one of the Bellinghams of Bellingham Castle, laid a wreath on behalf of the Bellingham family. The ceremony was a fitting tribute to the many men whose largely forgotten names are inscribed on the memorial. When the ceremony ended all were treated to refreshments in Foleys where people could catch up with old and make new friends.

being seen and then admitted to a ward is the new risk in our health system. “The incoming CEO has been in charge of hospitals in Roscommon and Galway so is no stranger to cutting back emergency and acute services in small-
er hospitals”, stated Cllr Sharkey. “As a member of the HSE Forum for this region, I will be tasking Mr Maher to admit that the closure of A&E and Acute Medical services in Dundalk has been a disaster and have added to overcrowding
and safety concerns in Our Lady of Lourdes Drogheda. “Mr Maher is coming into his job under a government whose local TDs and Senators promised the return of A&E and Acute Medical Services”, added the Sinn Fein councillor.

Growing frustration over water meters Dundalk U-11s make successful start From Page 1 “Our aim is to show our position in relation to what we see as unfair installation of water meters. I would like to make it clear that these are peaceful protests and we want to ensure the safety of both ourselves and the Irish Water workers while this process is ongoing”, explained Lisa. Old age pensioners Tommy English and Brendan Duffy were also protesting against the installation of water meters with Tommy asking why ‘water was free for everybody when the world began and why the hell should we have to pay for it now?”. The protests in O’Hanlon Park/Hillview took place a day
after a similar protest in Fr Murray park where four members of the public were arrested by Gardaí for public order offences. The quartet were escorted from the scene by Gardaí and later appeared before Dundalk District Court. Chairman of the O’Hanlon Park and Hillview Residents Association Anthony Taaffe is currently awaiting word back from the Gardai as he seeks discussions with regards to the rights of residents taking part in peaceful protests. “I have to say there is anger in the community regarding what we see as an overreaction by the Gardai to peaceful protesters in
Fr Murray Park a few days ago”, explained Anthony. “Two people were injured when arrested by Gardai during what had been completely peaceful protests against the installation of water meters. I went up to the Garda barracks and requested a meeting with the sergeant or whoever it may be to clarify our rights when taking part in a peaceful protest. I’m still awaiting a reply”, he noted. “At the end of the day we want residents to be able to go home at night with no stress anxiety and injury and indeed we want the workers from Irish water to go home without anxiety stress or injury also”, insisted Anthony.
The under-11 rugby squad. Dundalk RFC U-11 Sharks kicked off their 2014/2015 campaign against Boyne away at Shamrock Lodge where they turned in an impressive performance. There were two-equally skilled Dundalk teams who faced Boyne and both performed equally as well as the other. Up front there was aggression

This was matched fantastic incisive running and passing from Kieran McArdle, Cillian Halpenny, Conal O’Callaghan, Ciaran Tiernan, Aaron McGuin-

Cooley Historical Society events Michael O’Hanlon enthralled his audience with his talk for the Cooley Genealogical and Historical Society in Long’s Pub, Grange, on September 19. He gave an overview on the factual information gleaned from maps and settlement in the Cooley Peninsula since medieval times. Old place names were included which aroused curiosity and it was a reminder that curiosity survives formal education. The society would like to acknowledge his hard work, dedication and willingness to participate in the lecture series. Matt Murphy and Stephen Burns, actors, performed their ‘Wilde Tribute’ in Long’s Pub, Grange, Cooley, on Thursday night, October 2. They provided a lively night’s entertainment, light relief, laughter and enchanted their audience with their rendition of excerpts from Wilde’s work. The society would like to thank them for their efforts, support and their willingness to participate in a question and answer session. They reminded those present that life is like a play. It is not the length but the excellence of the acting that matters.

‘Accounts of the Conflict’ roadshow heads to DKIT By Paul Byrne The Department of Humanities at Dundalk Institute of Technology will host the ‘Accounts of the Conflict’ roadshow on Monday 13th October. Entrance is free and everybody is welcome to come along. Accounts of the

Ulster, and is funded from the European Union’s PEACE III programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body. Since the early years of the peace process, many individuals and groups from the North and beyond, have been engaged in processes which encourage the telling and sharing of their own personal experiences of the conflict. Many of those involved in such initiatives would agree that it makes a valuable contribution to dealing with the legacy of the past as part of a wider suite of measures. What storytelling offers is often a community-based contribution to the challenge of acknowledging and dealing with the impact of the conflict.
Accounts of the Conflict will bring together a large number of the individual stories collected by organisations in recent years. These accounts will be stored on servers at the university, thereby ensuring their long-term preservation and availability on the Internet. The Accounts of the Conflict Archive will be formally launched at the International Conference ‘Accounts of the Conflict: Digitally Archiving Stories for Peacebuilding’ in Belfast 17-18 Nov 2014. In advance of this several roads shows will be held to preview the resource. There will be two sessions, one from 3pm to 5pm in the Whitaker Theatre and a second session in the DkIT Library from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.

Carlingford Adventure Centre was the place to be on Saturday September 27 for the youth members of Ardee Concert Band. A total of 27 members under 18 travelled for a fun day out in recognition for all their hard work in the past few months which has involved recitals, rehearsals and the highlight of the summer, which was the Ardee Concert Youth Band Winning the Junior Section of the South of Ireland Band Championships in Clonakilty, Co. Cork last July. The trip also doubled up as a team-building exercise for some of the partaking members who recently joined the Youth Band from the Junior Band last Month. For the
morning, the boys and girls were taken up a clearing in the Cooley Mountains by the centre’s trained leaders along with the volunteer parents and helpers from the band to partake in the planned exercise. The group undertook the “Challenge Course” which tested the strength, lateral thinking, risk taking and trust of the group and they could only succeed the challenge if everyone in each team communicated and worked together as a team. Members were encouraged to review and discuss their progress upon completion of the stimulating course, according to PRO Sinead Nutley. “The adventure

away from our busy band rooms of the Bohemian Centre and really challenge themselves”, she
explained. After their hard morning’s work and a relieving brisk walk back down the
mountain the youth members headed to the green in the basking sun to have their packed lunch.

The event gets underway at 4pm with music on all stages continuing throughout the night until the early hours. The event is free and highly recommended for any music lovers around the county.

the NEW FIAT 500X The new Fiat 500X Crossover has been unveiled today at the Paris Motor Show and will go on sale in the middle of 2015. Sharing the platform of the Jeep Renegade the Fiat 500X is available in two different versions suited to metropolitan or adventurous types. There will be a choice of 12 exterior colours and eight alloy wheel designs to ensure a personalised look. Options will include the latest tech and safety equipment such as lane assist, blind spot monitoring and Fiat’s Uconnect informatics. The 500X will be equipped with a 'Drive Mood Selector' with three modes (Auto, Sport, All Weather) for engine, brake, steering and transmission settings. ‘Auto’ being the default mode ensuring the best fuel consumption and emissions, ‘Sport’allows for better performance and handling where ‘All Weather’ manages
the 500X’s electronic systems to ensure the best grip. On the more rugged eiditons, the ‘All Weather’ mode is replaced by the “Traction” mode, which makes the fourwheel-drive system more responsive to the lack of traction. Twowheel-drive rugged models get ‘Traction Plus’ to control torque to the front wheels in low-traction scenarios. There shouldl be a choice of three petrol and three diesel engines:
If you are looking at the front-wheeldrive petrol models then they are available with either a 110hp, 1.6-litre “E-torQ” unit with a five-speed manual gearbox or a 140hp, 1.4-litre Turbo MultiAir II petrol engine with the choice of a six-speed manual or a six-speed twinclutch transmission. If you want all-wheeldrive petrol model is equipped with the 170hp, 1.4-litre Turbo MultiAir II engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission.
On the diesel front – if you opt for frontwheel drive then you can choose between the 95hp, 1.3-litre MultiJet II turbo diesel with a five-speed manual gearbox or the 120hp1.6-litre MultiJet II turbo diesel equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox. If you want the four-wheel drive diesel then it comes with the 140hp, 2.0-litre MultiJet II turbo diesel, with the option of a six-speed manual or nine-speed automatic transmission.

There will be the option of two-wheeldrive and Suzuki’s ALLGRIP fourwheel-drive system which in Auto mode will keep the Vitara in two-wheel-drive until conditions need four-wheel-drive. You can lock it into fourwheel-drive for offroad utilizing a limited slip differential to help brake slipping wheels. There is also a Snow and Sport mode. There is a choice of two engines, a 1.6-litre
120ps petrol with five-speed manual or six-speed automatic and a 1.6-litre 120ps diesel with a six-speed manual transmission, as seen on the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross range. To aid the Vitara’s off-road credentials
ground clearance is 185mm with an 18.2° approach angle and a 28.2° departure angle. Safety equipment will include Suzuki’s Radar Brake Support (RBS) which is designed to
prevent driver from shunting the vehicle in front through a series of warnings and if necessary the automatic application of the brakes. There will also be the option of Adaptive cruise control.
the ALL NEW PASSAT Details of the all-new eighth generation Volkswagen Passat have been released with the launch date in 2015 yet to be announced. At launch you will only be able to opt for a diesel engine, from a range that starts with a 1.6-litre 120PS unit, 2.0-litre 150PS or 190PS and the topof-the-range 2.0-litre bi-turbo with 240 PS, DSG gearbox and 4MOTION four-wheel drive. There will be five trim-levels, ‘S’, ‘SE’, ‘SE Business’, ‘GT’ and’ R-Line’ – core equipment will include Post-Collision Braking System and mis-fuelling prevention on all models.
Peter Nash The ‘SE’ models and above will gain Front Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Crash system, Driver Profile Selection, Ergo Comfort seats and front and rear parking sensors. With the ‘SE Business’ edition adding satellite navigation. Later in 2015 the Passat will feature Active Info Display, which replaces the
traditional instrument cluster as seen on the Audi TT. Options include smartphone integration which also adds WiFi hotspots via VW’s Car-Net system, Predictive Pedestrian Protection and Traffic Jam Assist: brakes, accelerates and steers automatically, easing the strain during stop-and-go traffic.
