Sophie joins an elite band of stars By Eunan Whyte
One of Dundalk’s most talented sport stars added to her growing reputation last week after receiving international recognition. Fifteen-year-old Sophie Watters joined an elite group to have represented the Republic of Ireland when she made he debut for the Ireland U-17 Ladies soccer team against Denmark on Tuesday. Sophie, from Woodbury Gardens, was thrilled with the honour and she played an important part in a 1-0 victory at Home Farm, before starting in the second game two days later when the visitors won Sophie Watters is congratulated by Republic of Ireland manager Dave Connell 5-3. Tragic death of player after final THE euphoria of a Senior Championship victory turned to grief for St Patrick’s GFC as one of their players died tragically just a day after playing in the County Final. Eamon Carroll from Bellurgan, played a leading role as his club defeated Dreadnots by two points in Drogheda on Sunday, but in the early hours of Tuesday morning he was struck by a car while walking at Rockmarshal on the Dundalk/Carlingford Road at 1.20am. The 33-year-old was a very popular figure and talented footballer from a highly-respected family. He was dedicated to his football and helped the Lordship club to win six titles in the last 12 seasons, while he also represented Louth at senior level. See page 22

Dundalk man pens Patrick Kavanagh novel The launch of ‘BORRIKEEN’, a novel about the famous (and infamous) poet, Patrick Kavanagh took place at the Annual Patrick Kavanagh Weekend in Inniskeen on Saturday September 27. Penned by Paddy Carroll, a native of ‘Kavanagh country’ but now living on the Shore Road in Dundalk, this blend of fact and fiction offers the reader a very human perspective on the life of our celebrated poet and his influences. Through enlightening and witty accounts, sourced from extensive memoirs and quotations from Kavanagh’s work, Carroll moulds an uplifting novel, capturing the poet’s loves, labours and
literary achievements in one engaging story. According to Paddy he was stirred to write a book about Kavanagh due to the sheer diversity of opinion about the celebrated Inniskeen poet. “Why write a novel
about Patrick Kavanagh? Well, when reading and researching for this book, I was struck by the divergence of opinion about the great man”, explained Paddy. “Some people could, at the drop of a hat, recite
line after line of his poetry, or quote reams from his prose, or relate humorous anecdotes about his highly opinionated journalism, his controversial sociability. “Others were forthright in declaring him a drunkard, lacking in the social graces, obsessed by paranoiac delusions of persecution, critical of his cantankerous and curmudgeonly character. Such dichotomous opinions needed to be explored, and hopefully explained in the writing. Did I achieve that objective? I believe I have”, noted Paddy. Those who hold positive views about Kavanagh, or at least like his writings, will discover how he came to compose certain poems, write
Louth County Council has narrowly voted in favour of a 1.5% reduction in the Local Property Tax in 2015. The motion was carried at Monday’s council meeting thanks to the casting vote of chairman
Oliver Tully after the votes had been tied at 13 for and 13 against. Councillors were warned before the vote that a 1.5% reduction would equate to approximately €140,000 to €150,000 being taking
from the council budget which would need to be made up elsewhere. Each party went into the meeting with different ideas as to how much the Local Property Tax should be reduced by with Sinn Féin seeking to cut it by the maximum 15%. Fianna Fáil proposed a cut of 7.5% while Fine Gael opted for a 2% cut. Meanwhile the Green Party called for no reduction to the local property tax. After a two hour meeting each councillor submitted their vote and eventually a 1.5% reduction was agreed thanks
to chairman Oliver Tully’s casting vote. Councillors had previously been told by Louth County Council CEO Joan Martin that they should realise before voting that any significant reduction to the LPT was not feasible as there was a considerable shortage in Louth. “We do not have the luxury which you seem to think we have of reducing the property tax by 15% we don’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell of finding the necessary cuts”, warned the recently appointed chief executive officer.

He added that it came as a huge relief at being detected and that he was wholly remorseful. Mr McDonnell pointed out that his client’s circumstances

Mixed fortunes for cricketers
both of Dundalk Cricket Club’s senior sides have been relegated and so the 1st XI will be playing in Leinster Division 9 and the 2nd XI in Division 14. There was some hope when the club reached the final of the Dick O’Neill Cup for the first time only to emerge as runners up to a worthy Co. Galway CC. On a more positive note, the bright spot for the club has been the brilliant work carried out by everyone involved in setting up the girls team in St. Vincents School and

in 2015 they will make their debut in the Leinster Schools League, mention must be made of those involved who gave time and effort towards this, Deborah Challoner, Louise Challoner, John Finnegan and Michael Mullen. Youth training has also been very encouraging and the successful Wednesday evening training sessions at the ground have seen up to 30 schoolchildren of all ages and abilities taking part and this is set to continue in 2015. As a result the club is on track to have a youth
team in competitive action by 2016. Improvements to the ground have taken place and the installation of an artificial pitch has made a definite difference. The club’s Taverners side have had a very busy 2014 travelling north and south of the border cementing good relations with many different clubs and this is set to continue, the final match for the Taverners and club as a whole was a challenge match away to Central Brittany Cricket Club on September 27 and marks the first time the club have
sent a side abroad, plans are already afoot to tour in Portugal in 2015. Finally the club is having it’s annual open day at it’s ground in Dromiskin on Saturday October 4. All are welcome to attend what is usually a very enjoyable get together for the club and it’s supporters. The club is always looking for new members whether you are a beginner or seasoned veteran the club would encourage those interested in joining to make contact through the club website.

Gold Medal
Fitzpatricks has been awarded this year’s Best Cafes and Coffee Shops Award in the ‘Hotel & Catering Review Gold Medal Awards’. The awards recognise and reward excellence in hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, spas, clubs and catering operations across the island of Ireland. The awards were presented at a gala ceremony in the Double Tree Hilton Hotel on Monday September 22.
Sinn Féin Councillor, Tomás Sharkey, has been informed that negotiations have begun with contractors to repair the barriers on the MI Motorway. “Following representations from residents in the Little Mills area of Knockbridge regarding noise levels from the MI motorway and the fact that this is exacerbated because some panels of the sound barrier are down since last winter I asked Louth County Council Senior Engineer to bring the matter to the attention of Celtic Roads Group”, Cllr Sharkey explained. “CRG have now stated that quotations have been received to carry out repairs to the barriers and that negotiations with contractors has begun. “This is positive news and I welcome it. Sound barriers are needed for a reason, to lessen in impact of noise from the motorway on local residents. It is important that they are maintained and I look forward to the barriers in the Little Mills area of Knockbridge being repaired.”

Dundalk man brings horror film home By Paul Byrne
Dundalk man Barry Keating is back in his home town for an upcoming Spirit Store show having enjoyed a whirlwind year which has seen his film ‘Nymph’ play to audiences all around the world. Barry, from Mount Avenue, was approached by Serbian filmmakers Milan Konjevic and Marko Backovic to cowrite ‘Nymph’ after they were impressed with his work on a comic based on George Romero’s ‘Day of the Dead’. Since then the film has received enthusiastic reviews from horror film fans all around the world including America (where the film title was changed to ‘Killer Mermaids). Now Barry is back in Dundalk for next month’s screening of the film which will take place in the Spirit Store on October 30 at 8:30pm. He admits that
Barry Keating, Natalie Burn and Milan Tadorovic
he still gets a thrill when he sees his name on the opening and closing credit’s of the film. “It’s such a buzz to see your name written on the big screen during the credits. “It’s been such an exciting year for me being involved with this film and the whole experience has definitely left me wanting more”, explained Barry. “We were at the premier of the film a few months ago in Belgrade and there was 3000 people there to see it which was crazy. After the film
people were asking me to sign autographs and posters which was just surreal. We were also playing at Fright Fest in London which was a huge thrill for me as I’d been there as a punter many times before and it is probably the biggest and best horror festival out there”, noted Barry. Barry has been a fan of horror films for as long as he can remember having first developed a love for the genre from watching movies in his aunt’s video shop in Dundalk.
His love of horror saw him start out as a journalist, and then moving into comic books and video games before landing his dream role as a horror movie screen writer. Having tasted success with his debut film Barry is keen to continue his upward trajectory and is working with Milan Konjevic and Marko Backovic once more for a film which is due to be released next year. First up though Barry will be in the Spirit Store on October 30 to welcome everybody along for a free screening of Nymph (Barry prefers the Serbian name of the film which is the more mysterious ‘Mamula’). All are welcome to come along on the evening and enjoy the film which tells the story of two American tourists who discover a deadly mermaid during a Mediterranean vacation. Doors open at 8pm with the film starting at 8:30pm. Entrance is free.

After several weeks of intensive training, 15 members of the ‘Team Torres’ BJJ competition team made the long trek in the early hours of Sunday morning to Letterkenny in Co. Donegal in order to compete in the third leg of the ‘All Ireland BJJ League’. Expectations, as well as spirits, amongst the Team Torres team were running high based on the teams past performances, and they certainly did not disappoint when 12 of the 15 strong team obtained a podium position and they took home a combined total of five Gold and seven Bronze. The three team members who did not medal came agonisingly close to clinching a bronze medal when they were narrowly beaten in the quarter finals and denied their share of the spoils.
Gerry Smyth with his hand raised in triumph
Coaches Sebastiao Torres and Marty McLaughlin were understandably delighted with the team’s performance and felt that the arduous training by the competition team and the availability of skilled training partners was clearly paying dividends.

More medals for Karate Club Dundalk Karate were triumphant yet again at the Annual INSK Open Karate Competition which was held in Tallaght, Dublin at the weekend. Each member of the Dundalk Karate Squad who travelled to Dublin came home with medals after beating of stiff competition in each of their categories. First to the tatami matts was Katie McNamara and Franek Chmielecka for their Kumite (fighting) categories, and both members were up against a huge number of contestants and both managed to come away with medals. Firstly Katie fought her way through numerous rounds to receive a Gold Medal for all her hard work, which was quickly followed by Franek who won a bronze. Next up was Christopher Joyce who sailed through to the final and was awarded Silver. Following in hot pursuit was Katie and Franek yet again and this time Franek missed
out on a medal but Katie claimed bronze. Liam Hoey then turned in a series of impressive displays to reach the final and to say that the roof was lifted with applause when the judges and referees awarded Liam a Gold is putting it mildly. In the afternoon Liam competed in the Kumite and was again in impressive form as he won bronze.
Head of Dundalk Karate, Sensei Mary Marcus was delighted with the performances. “Each member of Dundalk Karate over the past few weeks have been putting in a lot of hard work, and to be able to come to a national competition and have all members of the squad be successful in all their categories is reward enough. “Everyone when they attend competitions
gets a little nervous and even excited, and for any student to be able to walk out in front of total strangers and perform in either Kata or Kumite Category and come home with medals, is just the icing on the cake for me. Well done everyone, you have all done not only Dundalk Karate proud, but yourselves, friends and families proud as well”, she stated.

Challenge to drink driving charge fails A man who was over the legal limit for driving failed in his bid to have the case against him dismissed on a technicality. As a result, Barry Wiseman of Castleroche, Hackballscross, was banned from driving for three years and fined €400 at Dundalk Dis-
trict Court, as a result of the incident on July 12, 2013. When evidence in the case was heard on September 10, the defendant argued through his solicitor, Niall Lavery, that an error on the Certificate of Analysis constituted a fatal flaw in the prosecution case and that the charge
should be dismissed. The Gardai accepted that the time at which the sample was provided should have read 12.46 pm, rather than 12.46am, but in direct evidence gave the correct time. Judge Flann Brennan stated that he wished to think about the matter and ad-
journed the case for a week, when he refused an application to have the matter dismissed. “I am satisfied that the prosecution doesn’t fail in this case as a result of an apparent difference of this sort. It is quite clear that the certificate relates to the same
sample from the same person on the same date. On that basis I am satisfied that the prosecution succeeds”, ruled Judge Brennan. Solicitor, Peter Lavery, stated that Mr Wiseman, who had previous convictions, had not been before the court on such a charge since 2006
and that he made a mistake on this date. He added that while Mr Wiseman fought the case on a technical point, he was offering a guilty plea. Judge Brennan also took into consideration a dangerous driving charge related to the same incident.

A man who was accused of assault on an 11-year-old boy had the case against him dismissed after the alleged injured party told Dundalk District Court that he didn’t understand the meaning of ‘swearing an oath’. Innocent Wilson of 59 Woodland, Dunleer, denied the charge which arose from an incident in Dunleer on May 23, 2013. Before Liam Horan could give evidence by video link, Judge
Flann Brennan asked if understood what it meant to swear an oath on the Bible. When the boy stated that he didn’t, Judge Brennan said he could not accept the evidence. As the only witness, he had no option but to dismiss the case. CCTV in relation to the incident was played in court and showed two young boys – one of which was Liam Horan – running up the street, before being

Assault accused has case dismissed News followed by Mr Wilson. Five days later, the alleged injured party made a complaint to Gardai about an assault. Mr Wilson was interviewed and told Gardai that Irish children had no manners and that in Africa you would be allowed “smack them on the bum bum”. Barrister, Irene Sands, stated that Mr Wilson claimed a group of boys had been throwing stones at cars on the day in question.

intensity and visible spectrum very close to that of sunlight. The beneficial effect of light is linked to its physiological action particularly its influence on secretion of melatonin, the “sleep hormone,” and serotonin, a neurotransmitter which regulates mood balance.
How Luminette works Luminette uses a safe light spectrum of blue enriched bright light emitted from 8 light emitting diodes (LED), proven to be the most effective wavelength in light therapy which is sent to a holographic visor which focuses the light toward the pupil, regardless of the direction of view and the position of the head, to the lower part of the retina, a particularly rich area in neuronal receptors involved in the therapeutic action of light which is directed to the retina from top to bottom much the same as natural sunlight. Luminette is a medically certified device and uses low light intensity (2000lux) so it’s completely safe causing no harm or damage to the eyes for the wearer.
Luminette is lightweight and is so easy to use, a session takes just 2025mins per day and can be done whilst still carrying out your everyday tasks including making breakfast for the kids, cooking, reading so it doesn’t take up extra time from your day. BIRTHDAY REMEMBRANCE
NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT Holy spirit, you that solves all problems. Light all roads so that I can obtain my goal. You that gave me the devine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me. In all instances of my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you have confirmed, but I never want to be separated from you. In spite of all material illusions I wish to be with you in eternal Glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and my own. Say 3 times a day for 3 days. K.McN.
NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. This time I ask you for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (never known to fail). L.T. NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. thanksgiving Jesus you who rejoice with simple and humble hearts so often forgotten and despised, exalt with the grace of cannonisation, Blessed Alexandrina M.Da Costa who always wanted to live hidden fron the world and far from it's pomps. Listen to the pleas which we make to you through her intercession, grant us especially the grace which we desire if it is for your honour the glorification of the immaculate heart of Mary and the salvation of sinners on whose behalf this deeply devoted daughter or yours gave herself so generously. undalk Musical Society is preparing to take the stage once again with their latest offering “Fiddler on the Roof”. Opening on Wednesday 15th until Sunday 19th of October 2014 at 8pm nightly in An Tain Theatre, tickets are now on sale from the box office on (042) 9332332 and now online at www.antain.ie. Set at the beginning of the twentieth century, the story centres around Jews and Orthodox Christians who live in the little village of Anatevka in the pre-revolutionary Russia of the Czars. Among the traditions of the Jewish community, the matchmaker arranges the match and the father approves it. The milkman Reb Tevye (Jim McGuigan) is a poor man that has been married for twenty-five years with Golde (Karyn McCooey) and they have five daughters. When the local matchmaker Yente (Maeve Montgomery) arranges the match between his older daughter Tzeitel (Fiona Mullen) and the old widow butcher Lazar Wolf (Gerry O Hara), Tevye agrees with the wedding. However, Tzeitel is in love with the poor tailor Motel Kamzoil (Paudie Breen) and they ask permission from Tevye to get married, he accepts to please his daughter. Then his second daughter Hodel (Aisling McCormack) and the revolutionary student Perchik (Alan Doherty) decide to marry each other and Tevye is forced to accept. When Perchik is arrested by the Czar troops and sent to Siberia, Hodel decides to leave her family and homeland and travel to Siberia to be with her beloved Perchik. When his third daughter Chava (Niamh Craven) decides to get married with the Christian Fyedka (Patrick Browne), Tevye does not accept and considers that Chava has died. Meanwhile the Czar troops evict the Jewish community from Anatevka. The show also features other well known faces including, Tim Ahern, Jack Montgomery, Paul McGee, Phyllis Woods, Geraldine Casey, Sean Og Cairns and Brian Halpin. Stunning sets and costumes as well as a breathtaking score performed to perfection by a stellar chorus will transport audiences to the village of Anatevka. Direction is in the very capable hands of Tullamore native Colin Hughes whose reputation has led him to direct for societies all over the country, Gilda Turner take charge of Choreography and has been putting the cast through their paces for the last 8 weeks. While musical direction is under the baton of Mary McCague with Geraldine Casey as Chorus Mistress. This charming and timeless story is one which is sure to warm the hearts of audiences as the chill of autumnal evenings approach; with songs like “If I were a Rich Man”, “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” and “Sunrise, Sunset” this is a show not to be missed.

Sophie stars From Page 1 came on as a sub on 60 minutes and really helped changed the game, so she got great praise from the manager and former Dundalk player, Dave Connell. “It was great for her to get this reward as she has been very dedicated to the sport and really worked hard to get her chance at this level”, explained Colin, who revealed that although she is primarily a central midfielder, she is equally at home in defence or attack. Sophie began her football with Quay Celtic at U-6 level and played right through in the Schoolboys League up to U-14 level. The club then started what proved to be a very successful girls team before she moved to Trim Celtic and was subsequently snapped up by Shelbourne. The list of honours is a testament to Sophie’s talent as she has won league titles at U-16, u-18 and senior level while this year she played a leading role on the team that won the U-18 Leinster Cup and was named Player of the Match as they club won the National Cup at U-16 level.

Her performances in winning the Gaynor Cup with the MGL representative squad helped earn a trial for the Irish team in August. The initial panel of 90 was reduced to 24 before Sophie, whose brother Kyle players for Quay U-13, made the squad of 18 for the internationals against Denmark. “She was over the moon when the news came through but she really worked hard to get this far. On an average week she will train three times, as well as doing her own programme, and then playing games at the weekend”, added a proud Colin.

Potrzebujemy 2 jaja, garść świeżych liści szpinaka, średniej wielkości pomidora, łyżkę posiekanego szczypiorku, ½ cebuli, sól morską i świeżo mielony czarny pieprz, jedna łyżka oliwy i 2 kromki pełnoziarnistego chleba. Warzywa należy umyć i osuszyć. Pomidora sparzyć wrzątkiem, obrać ze skórki i pokroić w kostkę. Na rozgrzanej oliwie zeszklić pokrojoną w drobną kostkę cebulę, dodać pomidora, przyprawić solą i pieprzem. Poddusić, a następnie dodać je do roztrzepanych jaj. Na dnie żaroodpornego naczynia układamy liście szpinaku, wlewamy masę jajeczną i zapiekamy pod przykryciem w 160 stopniach przez około 15 do 20 minut. Gotowy omlet podajemy z pełnoziarnistym pieczywem i szczypiorkiem. W sam raz na pyszne, zdrowe, proste i modne śniadanie na jesienne poranki. Pozdrawiam – Agnieszka Boniewicz.

LMETB prepare for Musical Extravaganza As soon as the the first week of school is over, its time for LMETB to start preparing for their sixth annual Musical Extravaganza. The event was the brain child of Chief Executive Peter Kierans in 2008 when he was CEO of Meath VEC. In March the Musical Extravaganza was held in the magnificent TLT and boasted all 15 schools from both Louth and Meath. In excess of 500 students sang, played and thoroughly entertained a packed TLT auditorium. The event was coordinated by Youth Officer Elma McMahon and Musical Director Paul Strachan. This year the event will be
even bigger as there are three news schools in the LMETB family – Coláiste Chu Chulainn in Dundalk, Ballymakenny College in Drogheda and Coláiste De Lacy in Ashbourne bringing the number of schools in the Louth Meath area to 17. There are nine other schools from County Meath namely Colaiste na hInse (Bettystown), Ratoath College, O Carolon College (Nobber), St Oliver’s Post Primary (Oldcastle), Coláiste Poball Rathcairn, Beaufort College (Navan), Colaiste na Mí (Johnstown), St Peters College (Dunboyne), St Fintinas Post Primary (Longwood) and Dunshaughlin Community College.
There are five other schools from County Louth which are, Bush Post Primary, O Fiath College (Dundalk), Scoil Úi Mhuiri (Dunleer), Colaiste Lú (Dún Dealgan) and St Olivers Community College (Drogheda). Elma McMahon said “it’s always exciting to work with the students and teachers in our schools but this year it is even more there is a fabulous opportunity for brand new first years to experience preforming in a venue like the TLT in Drogheda or the Solstice in Navan. We are very lucky to have such talented students in our schools and we are so Paul Strachan Elma McMahon and Tommy Leddy at very proud of them’. the TLT

He was a great player, but more importantly a true gentleman. He was a really likeable Eamon Carroll fella and there wasn’t a bad “He was the same on bone in his body. He was the field of play as I don’t a friend from the moment think he was ever booked. you first spoke to him. Everyone is totally devas-
tated by this and we feel so sorry for his family at this time”, added Alan. The esteem in which Eamon was held by friends and opposition players is reflected in the warm tributes have been pouring in from clubs across the county. Eamon, who worked as a bank official in Dublin, is survived by parents, Joe and Geraldine, sisters, Grace, Sinead and Fiona, and brother, Francis.
The joint Career Workshop run by Worklink and eDundalk. com on Thursday 25th September was a great success. Over 60 people listened to presentations from Worklink volunteers Richard Hanlon, Michael Gaynor and Ceinwen Fergus, as well as a presentation on entrepreneurship from Daniel Ramamoorthy, CEO of Treehouse. Ceinwen Fergus, Worklink’s North East Regional Coordina tor, said “EDundalk’s Amaka Okonkwo ensured that the evening ran smoothly, and we are very grateful for her support in making the event such a success. People who
attended the Career workshop received an introduction to Worklink’s services and were able to ask questions relating to different areas of job-hunting. We hope to see many of them again at other workshops later in the year”. Worklink is a volunteer organisation which provides information and support to unemployed jobseekers. VW Golf Alltrack new honda civic
Following on from the introduction of the Passat Alltrack in 2012, Volkswagen are now introducing the allwheel-drive Golf Alltrack, which will be premiered at next week’s Paris Motorshow. VW have taken the Golf Estate – jacked up the suspension by 20mm, added their 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system and added over-body protection mouldings. Under normal driving conditions the power goes to the front axle, effectively decoupling the rear which saves on fuel, should traction be lost at the front it can transfer 100 per cent of the torque to the rear wheels. There will be a choice of four engine options, one petrol – a direct-injection four-cylinder turbocharged 1.8-litre TSI unit producing a 180 PS that is capable of 0-62 mph in 7.8 seconds with a top speed of 135mph. It has a combined fuel economy of 41.5mpg with CO2 emissions rated at 158g/km. The three diesel units include, 1.6-litre TDI
110PS, 2.0-litre TDI 150PS and a 2.0 TDI 184PS. The top-of-therange diesel unit is capable of 0-62 mph in 7.8 seconds via its DSG transmission. The exterior remains pretty much un-changed from that of the Golf Estate bar the ride height, the body-protection mouldings around the lower section of the car and the redesigned bumpers. The interior will be familiar to owners of the
current Golf, additionally there are bespoke seat covers with ‘Alltrack’ branding on the rear of the front seats. Other custom trim includes include a chrome trim strip with "4MOTION" lettering on the centre console compartment lid, stainless steel door sill plates with "Alltrack" lettering and chrome accents for various switches and buttons (lights, electric windows, mirrors)
