Sosad move to Jocelyn Street By Paul Byrne Last Saturday was a momentous day for the SOSAD organisation as the Dundalk branch moved into their beautiful new premises in 42 Jocelyn Street. SOSAD (Save Our Sons And Daughters) was founded in 2010 by Peter Moroney following his son Wayne’s suicide in 2003. Peter realised that there was a distinct lack of resources in the North East to help people cope with the effects of suicide and brought it on himself to establish a counselling and support service. The charity have offices in Drogheda, Dundalk, Cavan, Kingscourt, Navan and Dundalk with the original Dundalk office opening in Williamsons Continued on Page 2

Having signed the lease in August the SOSAD volunteers have been busy putting the finishing touches to their new premises painting the two counselling rooms and creating a bright relaxing space for visitors. According to Ciara the move will ensure that people using the SOSAD’s services will receive the very best care. “We now have two beautifully relaxing spacious counselling rooms which we have been working on non-stop over the past few weeks to ensure we were ready for our official opening. We are growing all the time and the need for our services is greater than it ever was. The official opening of SOSAD’s new premises in 42 Jocelyn St. took place last Saturday with Dundalk manager

From Clermont the runners returned to Dundalk via Edentubber before heading up the old Newry Rd to the Táin Bridge in Dundalk where they formed up as a block for the final leg up to Realt na Mara where they were cheered home by all the pupils and teachers of the school. The 27 Infantry Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Mark Hearns was also on hand to meet the runners and to accept a plaque on behalf of the officers and members of the battalion from school principal Phil McCaul. Meanwhile Principal McCaul did his bit to help out the Motor Neurone Disease charity as he accepted Fr Mark O’Hagan’s nomination to do an ice bucket challenge. Members of staff and pupils helpfully offered their services as they poured bucket after bucket of ice cold water over the Realt na Mara principal. The Ice Bucket challenge has now raised over €1m for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease As-

The SOSAD premises will be open Monday to Friday from 10am-6pm and everybody is welcome to drop in and have a chat with any of the volunteers in the house. The SOSAD helpline number is 0834244182 or 0429327311. A SOSAD fundraiser takes place this Sunday at the Newry Road bridge with the Dundalk Daffy Duck Derby starting at 3pm. All are welcome to lend their support to the event.

Teenager warned by judge to stay away from drugs A 19-year-old man who pleaded guilty to possession of drugs at Dundalk District Court was told that the world would be a better place if all drug dealers were dead. Judge Flann Brennan made the comments while warning Cian Taggart of 2 Clois Deirdre, The Ferns, Blackrock, to stay away from drugs. “Have nothing to do with drugs as they are a plague on the world. The world would be a better place if we went to bed one night and when we woke up every drug dealer was dead. I know that is extreme but it is a fact”, stated Judge Brennan. “Cannabis is a ruinous drug and most days in court you will see lives that have been ruined by cannabis and the people

concerned will admit that”, the judge added as he explained that Mr Taggart was fortunate not to have progressed to that level. “Whoever, gave you this drug was probably a small-time crook but they are only a small step away from people who kill or maim over drugs. That’s how close you are to those people”, he continued. The court heard that the defendant was stopped by Gardai on June 2, 2103, and a small quantity of cannabis was found. He initially stated that he had found the bag. Solicitor, Roger McGinley, revealed that his client was an apprentice butcher had learned a lesson from the incident. “It is fair to say that the shock of being detected, together with the

support of his family, has helped him to sever his connections with anything of that nature. At the time he was unemployed for reasons partly connected to issues such as this but he has been re-employed by his previous employer and is continuing with his apprenticeship. “He is putting his life back on track and is in court with his parents who are taking a great interest in what happened. I am confident that this is an isolated incident”, added Mr McGinley who asked the judge not to impose a conviction that would have consequences for the future. Judge Brennan warned Mr Taggart not to do anything like this again as he found the facts proven and dismissed the case.

Became abusive when officials inspected farm A man who threatened officials from the Department of Agriculture when they inspected his farm was given a four month suspended sentence at Dundalk District Court. Michael Kearney, Cullenstown, Readypenny, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to obstructing an agricultural officer arising from the incident at Readypenny on March 21, 2012. The court heard that on that day, Gardai were called to the farm by the officials who were present in relation to untagged cattle. Mr Kearney was very aggressive and threatened the offi-

cials a number of times, including a warning that they better have 24-hour protection. It was revealed that the man, who changed his name from Mark Finnegan to Michael Kearney by deed poll, had 35 previous convictions, including cruelty to animals and allowing a carcass to remain unburied. Solicitor, Paula Tiernan, stated that at the time her client was having difficulty with the Dept of Agriculture, but has since undertaken never to farm again. She revealed that he has suffered difficulties with his mental health and has attended for

psychiatric treatment. His health has improved and he hasn’t come to the attention of Gardai in the past 12 months. Ms Tiernan added the Mr Kearney’s difficulties started when he was forced to quit university to return home and help his father on the farm and look after his mother who suffers from ill-health. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a four month prison sentence which he suspended for four months and warned that it would be brought down if he committed any offence during that time.

Make the Force be wih you at youth thetre The Force was strong at Dundalk Youth Theatre’s recent summer camp, when the members got the chance to dress up as characters from “Star Wars” and enter an exciting and imaginative space world. The young people, some of whom were new to the youth theatre and had never acted before, worked on and played out scenes from “Shakespeare’s Star Wars”, a retelling of the science fiction classic in Shakespearian language. The summer camp was the culmination of a fun-filled year, which included weekly workshops on voice, movement and performance skills, a workshop with

Family fun day to support MND By Niamh Kirk

Dundalk’s annual family fun fundraiser for motor neuron disease is set for Saturday, September 14. Now in its third year the day was established by the parents of Siobhan Stewart who was lost to motor neuron disease. The family day had been Siobhan’s idea, and she had hoped to attend the first of many fundraisers in September 2011 but sadly passed away in July of that year. Her parents decided to hold the family day in her memory and it is developed into an annual event in Oriel Park. The day’s event take place on the pitch and includes a penalty shoot out against Dundalk FC goalie Peter Cherrie, a treasure hunt and old style family fun events. A popular raffle for a Dundalk FC jersey signed by the team will also take place. Dundalk FC’s manager, Stephen Kenny, will lead a group walk that

begins at Oriel Park, takes a route around the Echo Road, Castletown Road and then passes the Harp Brewery before returning to the fun. “There’s a great feeling on the day, family and friends enjoy it, everyone gets great craic out of it “ said Peter Stewart. There will also be a few buckets of iced water for those who have want to take the Ice Bucket Challenge. The Stewarts say they are amazed at the impact the Ice Bucket Challenge is having. “It’s incredible to see it, it is raising awareness which is very important. We didn’t know what motor neuron was when Siobhan was diagnosed, what it meant,” added Peter. The family day for motor neuron disease takes place in Oriel Park, from 2pm to 5.30pm, admission for adults is €5, children are €2 and there is a family discount. All proceeds for the day will go to Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Students delight in ice bucket challenge

Stephanie Morris holds her breath in the Ice Bucket Challenge as Erica Matthews and Elaine O’Brien look on.

Most students can only dream of throwing a bucket of icy water over their teachers’ heads, but this dream became a reality as over 400 St. Vincent’s students took great pleasure in watching 26 of their teachers take part in the Ice Bucket Challenge craze which has swept the country. A raffle was held to find

the lucky girls who grabbed the chance of drenching their teachers. Luckily the sun shone for the challenge and Principal Deirdre Matthews led by example as she braved the water first, though not before taking the time to nominate other secondary schools in the area. Staff were particularly keen to raise funds for Motor Neuron

disease as one of their recent past pupils tragically died from the illness. The event was organised by teachers Cadhla Hodgers and Fiona Butler who were delighted with the interest from both pupils and staff. A total of over €1200 was raised which will go to the IMNDA and St. Vincent de Paul.

Fundraiser revives memories of the 80s By Niamh Kirk

Local fundraiser Paul Brady who over the years has been instrumental in ensuring local charities have money to cover their services is organising an 80s night for Cara Cancer Support Centre. On the night Frankie Says will get the crowd dancing and a DJ will keep them on the floor filled until late. The 80s themed night will also have sport prizes for the best dressed.

Mr Brady’s wife is a breast cancer survivor and Paul decided that the care and support they received should be reciprocated. Paul who has held fundraisers for The North Louth Hospice and for Cara, hinted that he is planning something very special in the coming months. “It’s just my way of paying back and thanking the hospice and Cara for all the help,” said Paul. Karate club among medals Dundalk Karate recently travelled to Ballybay to attend an IKFC (Irish Karate Federation Commission) Squad Training Session, and with the IKFC having member clubs all over Ireland, it was yet another stepping stone on the training regime for members of Dundalk Karate for 2014. With schools back and the nights already closing in, training has only intensified for Dundalk Karate, and with an upcoming competition in Dublin looming on the horizon at the end of September, members are taking advantage of every possible opportunity to train. Kata (form) was firstly covered for an hour and a half, where everyone had to perform their Individual Kata and with all eyes on Dundalk Karate’s Junior Members, they did not let the IKFC coaches down. After a short break, the next instalment of

Ryan Cumiskey, Franek Chmielecka & Liam Hoey at IKFC Squad Training held in Ballybay.

training, namely, Kumite (fighting), was not only invigorating but challenging. A number of kumite drills were put into action, and with not only punches and kicks being put into separate drills for members, they were all put into practice by members of Dundalk Karate when

everyone was paired of for kumite bouts. Head of Dundalk Karate, Sensei Mary Marcus was very impressed with the performances. “To see Junior Members of Dundalk Karate taking instruction and thriving on not only kata instruction but new and exciting tech-

niques for their kumite is a joy to see”, she said. “Every member of Dundalk Karate learnt something new, and to see members coming away having spent their Saturday morning training with fellow members of the IKFC is fantastic. Well Done to all members”, she added.

News Magee shows value of hard work in Brief TeamTorres BJJ closed out the summer season with yet another eventful weekend starting when novice fighter Padraig Magee travelled up to the Waterfront in Belfast to compete in the inaugural ‘KumiteMMA Fight Night’. The event featured some of the best up and coming amateur talent from across Ireland, all of whom were eager to replicate the achievements of Conor McGregor. Padraig, fighting at flyweight, was the first fight on the card in a hotly anticipated duel where he faced off against Austin Lynch who fights out of the Kyuzo MMA gym

Brendan Reilly on top working a guard escape at the in-house competition

in Dublin and who was coming off an impressive first round TKO win in his recent debut performance in UXC 1. Both gyms have a

strong grappling background and bring with them a well versed submission game however both fighters have a reputation of not being shy

about keeping the fight standing. In what was a bruising action packed encounter where Lynch showed some impressive striking skills and brought the fight to Magee. Padraig nonetheless weathered the storm dominating the ground game and finished the fight in the second round with a classical head and arm triangle choke. Coach Sebastiao Torres was delighted with Magee’s performance and rate of improvement, commenting “Pádraig Magee showed tonight that hard work will take you where you want to go”. The following day the

club held a well-attended in-house competition which was an opportunity for the members to showcase the major improvements in skill level clearly evident in their weekly sparring as the months progress. The event had categories for white and blue belts in the -73kg, -85kg, and +85kg categories followed by an Absolute Section. The day involved some hotly contested fights and provided some valuable competition experience in preparation for the next round of the Brazillian JiuJitsu league being held in Letterkenny on September 14.

Children enjoy the adventure at Geotourism Rock Camps

Children pictured at the Cooley Rock Camp, hosted by Bellurgan Park, learning about life in medieval times.

Children from across Down, Armagh and Louth have enjoyed the second year of Rock Camps Adventure Summer Schemes over the past four weeks. The Rock Camps were hosted by Mourne-CooleyGullion Geotourism with a view to enhancing knowledge and appreciation of the local geology and archaeology and encouraging children to explore and enjoy. The summer scheme for children aged 7 to13, which was hosted over

four weeks in the three areas, aimed to expose children to the natural landscape of their local area, including local and regional geology, geography and archaeology through fun adventure and educational experiences. It also provided an educational and recreational opportunity where children could gain an appreciation and understanding of their local geology, landscape formation, geography and archaeology.

The participants enjoyed fieldtrips to the Silent Valley, Slieve Gullion Forest Park, Whitestown Beach, Cranfield Beach, and the lake in Castlewellan Forest Park. This interactive summer scheme programme is part of the Geotourism Education programme which promotes the three areas of Mourne Mountains, Cooley Peninsula and Ring of Gullion, with a particular focus on the significant geology and archaeology.

Geotourism Manager John Devaney stated that “the Rock Camps were a novel idea to engage children and young people in a way that hadn’t been tried before. This initiative allowed them to explore, learn and enjoy and to perhaps enhance their appreciation and knowledge of the landscape around them. The scheme has been a big success and we hope we can build on it as we consider a wider schools programme in the coming months”, he said.

traffic calming measures By Niamh Kirk

Residents in two areas in Dundalk are seeking the implementation of traffic calming measures to boost safety in their areas. Residents in the Alphonsus Road in Dundalk’s town centre has been experiencing increased heavy traffic, particularly late in the evening and throughout the night. Contacting Cllr Maria Doyle, the residents are hoping to see a restriction on hours or the introduction of speed ramps. Residents have reported their houses shaking as large

trucks pass at speed; others have found getting into their own cars along the road difficult during busy traffic periods. At the coming meeting of Dundalk Municipal District Meeting, Cllr Doyle is motioning for traffic surveys to take place and, in the absence of funds for speed ramps and alternative solution to be found for the community. “It’s a narrow road and I am asking for an engineer to have a look at it and complete a traffic survey and find a management plan,” she said. Old Muirhevna is

also experiencing increased traffic speed which raised concerns. “some residents contacted me about the traffic in the area, with children playing on the green they felt it was not safe for them”. “However in this case the solution might be as simple as better road signage,” she said. However it seems clear that speed ramps will not be introduced in either area as the response to both motions from Council management replied sating there were no more funds for speed ramps.”

Local students model at Electric Picnic St. Vincent’s students Katie Brady and Clare Keenan joined the stellar line-up at Electric Picnic when they got to model their costumes as part of the Junk Kouture fashion show. Report highlights scale of elder abuse in county By Niamh Kirk

More than 40 cases of elder abuse from Co Louth were referred by local health officers last year to the HSE according to the ‘Open Your Eyes’ elder abuse report. Health chiefs said that the problem is worsening since recording of complaints and incidents began

in 2008. Physical abuse made up about 14% of cases, while neglect account for about 21% and financial 22% but about one third of it is describe as emotional or psychological related to bullying, intimidation and harassment. In the majority of cases the abuse is perpetrated by a family member with sons and

daughter being named in 45% of cases. In the vast majority of cases, 78% it is only one perpetrator. Those who reported abuse come from a number of sources as well as the victim of abuse, GPs, health professionals, other family members, community workers, family friends and neighbours have all reported cases of elder abuse.

Gardai get involved in more than 20% of cases and a register of perpetrators is kept by case workers. As well as the report the HSE published guidelines to help prevent elder abuse that advise training for those who interact with elderly people on a regular basis and how older people can protect themselves from abuse.

If you are being abused or suspect someone you know is, there are steps that can be taken. The HSE advises to talk to someone you trust, a GP, community worker, Garda or solicitor. The HSE run an information hotline that provides details specific to Louth’s localities The HSE Information Line is 1850 24 1850.

Dundalk retain gold medal in Tidy Towns Dundalk have retained their gold medal in this year’s Tidy Towns awards for an impressive seventh year in a row. There were also medals for Blackrock and Tallanstown who both picked up silver medals while Knockbridge were awarded a bronze. Willie Duffy who is involved in the Dundalk Tidy Town’s committee praised what he called ‘Team Dundalk’ for their huge efforts to ensure Dundalk retained their gold medal. “We are absolutely delighted to have retained our gold medal” ‘exclaimed Willie. “This is the seventh year in a row we have managed to secure gold and it’s all down to Team Dundalk. There is a huge team involved to ensure that the town is looking as well as it is. We have seventy four resident’s associations who help

ensure the estates and gardens are all looking immaculate. “The lovely hanging baskets and flowerbeds you see around town don’t just happen by themselves. They are thanks to the efforts of Team Dundalk. Overall we’re very pleased with our results as there was a new judging criteria introduced for this year and we were unsure of how that would go” explained Willie. “We are delighted for ourselves and delighted for all the villages around the County that also were awarded medals. Unfortunately Blackrock and Tallanstown didn’t retain their gold but they were awarded silver while Knockbridge were awarded a bronze having received silver last year. I know how hard each of their committees work and it shows just how hard it is to get the gold medal” ‘noted Willie.

Willie also heaped praise upon the probation services who have done herculean work throughout the year to ensure Dundalk is kept clean and tidy. “I have to give a special mention to the work of the probation services who have done magnificent work throughout the year. The work they have done to restore St Helena’s Park to it’s former glory and the wonderful job they did painting the Táin bridge was fantastic. All we had to do was supply the paint and they did the rest. Next they will be moving to Ice House Hill to do some work there during the winter and it’s important that their work is acknowledged” ‘urged Willie. The annual Féile Chultúrtha Ó Méith is happening next weekend in the previously Gaeltacht area of Omeath. Omeath was the last Gaelic-speaking place along the entire north east and the community is actively beginning to revive the former Gaeltacht area to its original status. The festival is a celebration of this true Irish heritage and is aimed at reintroducing the Irish native tongue through the establishment of the “Aras na nGael Omeith” and the delivery of a three-day “Dianchursa sa Ghaeilge” during

the festival in addition to events of traditional song, dance and Irish fun. Everyone will be delighted with the range of traditional activities that are taking place with something guaranteed for all ages. A Street Party on the Saturday will host old time children’s games with bouncy castles, face painting, art activities and fancy dress. Fun activities on the water on Sunday such as crab fishing and a themed raft race, will be enhanced by the spectacular views across Carlingford Lough. Irish language classes feature prominently in

the programme over the entire weekend and registration begins at Friday 6pm at the Irish centre with ‘rangs’ for 5 – 12 year olds and adults to suit all levels. The new Fras na Gaelige Centre will be officially opened on Friday evening by Linda Ervine the Irish Language Officer at the East Belfast Mission The opening will be followed by a sessúin in the Cornamucklagh House and the hilarious play ‘I’ll Tell Me Ma’ will take place at the Granvue House Hotel. Trad seisúins and live music on the street featuring the Ceolheads

will promise a fantastic atmosphere all weekend with a Céilí Mór and Sean Nós dancing closing the festivities on the Sunday evening. “We are delighted with the response and support from both Louth and the Newry and Mourne area”, said Helen Thompson Manager Omeath District Development. “The community is excited about the festival and we are very grateful for locals like Neville McCann who has spearheaded this and generous support of locals such as Seamus Mc Quaid”, added Ms Thompson.

It is the time of year when pressure is mounting on charities throughout Ireland. Local fundraisers are holding a car boot sale for St Patricks Soup Kitchen this Sunday September 14, in the Fairways Hotel. The Soup Kitchen has been operating in Dundalk for more than 15 years, and rely

entirely on donations and volunteers. Local supermarkets are also pitching in by signing up to the Food Cloud which helps distribute fresh food surplus to local charities. The Soup Kitchen is actively seeking helpers, but wants to remind those who are hoping to volunteer over Christmas to re-

member that Garda vetting is required and will take about four weeks to clear. The Soup Kitchen is open four nights a week and on a Sunday and they accept all types of donations, from money to surplus food from parties and events. Any excess they have they pass on to a local nun who distrib-

utes among those in need. The car boot sale starts at 11am and runs to 5pm, the Fairways are donating their services for free so all the proceeds will go to the Soup Kitchen. Hot food will be available and face painting for the kids making it a fun family day out.

The Great Pink Run

Carboot Sale in aid of soup kitchen

Ellie Dollard Hutchinson completed the ‘Great Pink Run’ in Phoenix Park on Saturday August 30, raising over €300 for cancer. A few years ago Ellie’s own Dad became ill with cancer, however through a lot of love and brave battles, he is now a strong cancer surrvivor. Although only eight years old, Ellie fully understands the changes and effects cancer can have on people and those who love them. She showed huge maturity and great determination by taking upon herself to do this. Dressed all in pink on the day and roping in her mum Carol Hutchinson and family friend Catherine Pearson she finished the 5km event in just under 54 minutes.

Novena to Saint Martha St. Martha, I resort to thee and to thy petition and faith, I offer up to thee this light which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties through the great favour thou didst enjoy when Our Saviour lodged in thy house. I beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (Mention favour). Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask thee St. Martha to overcome the dragon which thou didst cast at thy feet. One Our Father and three Hail Marys, and a Glory Be Amen; and a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotion to St. Martha. This miraculous Saint grants ever thing before the Tuesdays are ended. No matter how difficult. E.D. NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. This time I ask you for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (never known to fail). J.C. NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. Relish Café comes to town The award winning Relish Café is coming to Dundalk after plans were announced for a new outlet. Relish Café was opened by Denise Walsh in Bettystown, as a result of her ambition to create an attractive yet simple brand of excellence, identifiable by her respect for the local community, local produce and good value

for money, quality and wholesome recipes. The café celebrated its seventh birthday recently and the Dundalk outlet will be its fourth. The aim of Relish Café is that each café offers something a little different to the customer and the management pride themselves on being warm, friendly, knowledgeable and attentive.

Over to you Would you use google’s driverless car?

John Teeple

Peter Rice

Kabir Alli

I think it’s a very bad idea. You’d probably need a pin number to start it and the car could easily get hacked or stolen. I think this idea is a step too far.

I’d prefer to drive a traditional car myself. I wouldn’t be fully confident in a car that is controlled by a computer. You hear of computers having glitches all the time. I think I’ll stick to driving my diesel car.

I’d love to drive one. It would take all the hassle out of driving and it would mean you could still get into your car when you’re feeling tired. It can be awfully annoying driving around town when it’s busy stopping and starting all the time.

19

Catherine Behan Chloe Schiavone No, I wouldn’t be comfortable at all with that idea. There is such a thing as too much technology. I’d much prefer to drive a car myself.

I think it’s a class idea. I’d love one. I think it would save on petrol and there would be less accidents around town. There are so many bad drivers in Dundalk.

Family fun walk honours Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic News in Brief memory of Tiarnán Levins

The parents of a boy who passed away at the age of eight years are honouring his memory with a special fundraiser to help benefit other children who have to spend time in hospital. Tiarnán Levins, from Hunterstown, passed away in April 2102 after a brave battle with illness, and his parents John and Rosemary, are organising a 5km family fun walk on Sunday September 14. Funds raised at the third ‘Tiarnán’s 5k Family Fun Run/ Walk’ will go towards

purchasing an electric profile bed for the children’s ward in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, as Rosemary explained there were none available when Tiarnán was in hospital. The event will start and finish at Hunterstown Rovers football field, with registration taking place at 11am. Poignantly, the route will take participants past Tiarnán’s resting place at Ballapousta Cemetery. Rosemary, who explained that entry is a donation of what people can afford, thanked

the local community for their support of the event. “The main reason we are able to hold the event again is down to the support of the local community, including our family, friends and businesses. “I would like to thank them all for their support as we all know that times are tough but we have been blown away by the generosity of everyone”, she added. For those interested in taking part, offering help or sponsorship please contact John on 087 2256224.

A man who was disqualified from driving for four years after pleading guilty to a charge of failing to provide a sample, was reminded that had he provided the sample and failed, the maximum disqualification would only have been

three years. Daniel O’Grady with an address at Carlanstown, Kells, Co Meath, was stopped in a car by Gardai after they were called to Cypress Gardens, Bay Estate, Dundalk, on July 13 this year. He was taken to

Dundalk Garda Station where he failed to produce a breath sample. He apologised for his actions. Judge Flann Brennan also imposed a €250 fine and postponed the disqualification to March 3, 2015.

A new season is about to kick off for The Dundalk Wine Circle and they will be holding their opening night of the season on Wednesday, 17 at 7.30pm, in the Crowne Plaza and will taste wines from several wine regions.
