The case of Ciara Breen, a 17-year-old Dundalk schoolgirl who has been missing since 1997 will feature on RTE’s Crimecall next Monday evening and investigating Gardai are hoping it will job people’s memories as they bid to solve the case. Since renewing the appeal last month, Gardai have received a number of calls and an anonymous letter. They are hoping that further information will seem them make a breathrough. A reconstruction of the night of her disappearance will be shown on the popular RTE crime investigation programme with Gardaí appealing for more information from anybody that knows anything about Ci-

ara’s disappearance. Ciara went missing in February 1997 from her Bachelor’s Walk home which she shared with her mother Bernadette. It is thought she sneaked out of her bedroom window to meet up with someone while her mother slept but tragically she never made it back home. Her mother Bernadette believes her only child was killed. Detective Pat Marry who is leading the case has once again appealed for members of the public to watch Crimecall next week and contact Gardaí if there’s anything at all they can share in relation to Ciara’s disappearance. “We launched an appeal asking for information regarding Ciara’s disappearance last month and since Continued on Page 14

Warning that joyriders Cuchulainn akery are putting lives at risk Now TakingBChristmas Orders By Paul Byrne

Market Sq. Dundalk

Councillor Jim Loughran has warned that lives are at risk if joyriders are allowed to continue use roundabouts in North Louth as a racetrack. The issue of joyriders in North Louth has been an ongoing problem according to the Sinn Fein councillor and he has urged local Gardaí to help put a stop to it before somebody gets killed. “Joyriders have been a scourge in North Louth for three or four years now and it’s got to the stage where they are using local roundabouts as racetracks because nothing is being done to deter them and they feel as though they can do what they want”, explained Jim.

“They are blocking the exits and entrances of the main roundabouts at the Carlingford turn and the roundabout at Feede Cross and they are intimidating drivers who are trying to get past them. The Gardai might go but they’ll be back again the next night and doing the same thing again”, added Jim. Speaking at last week’s Municipal District meeting Cllr Loughran claimed that it’s only a matter of time before these joyriders cause a death on the roads. He also urged for a special committee meeting to take place between Gardaí, councillors and relevant Louth County Council officials. “The situation is totally out of hand. We need to all sit down

together and work out a way to stop these joyriders from terrorising our public roads. A few months ago one of them crashed their car and damaged a house on Maxwell’s Row beside the Lisdoo. It’s only a matter of time before there is a life taken by these people”, warned Jim. “This issue has been raised numerous times before with the Gardaí and we’ve been told that they simply do not have enough cars to send out to stop these joyriders. “We have told them how these drivers were causing havoc on both sides of the border. They are intimidating other drivers and we need to get them off the roads”, concluded the Sinn Fein councillor.

man warns shoppers Decision Local to be wary of pickpockets due on JJB By Tamara O’Connell

THE opportunity for members of the public to have a say on record about DkIT’s ambitious plans for JJB Sports and Leisure Complex has now passed. The deadline for submissions to Louth County Council (LCC) about the Institute’s plans for the Dundalk sports complex expired on Sunday, December 7.

The proposal to purchase JJB, which is located on the Inner Relief Road, and allow DkIT students to use the facilities, has been mired in controversy. Students voted to back DkIT’s purchase of JJB and agreed to pay an annual levy of €125 in exchange for access to facilities such as indoor athletic training pitches, a fully equipped gym, a 20m swimming pool, steam room and Jacuzzi and the Soccer Dome.

Pack your bags, you're on your way to Venice, for a 3-night stay

However, some students were outraged when it later emerged that local cycling club, Cuchulainn CC, had struck a deal with DkIT to incorporate a cycling velodrome at JJB.

The current proposal put forward by DkIT to the local authority does not reference the cycling velodrome. LCC is due to make a decision on January 6, 2015.

A local man has warned Christmas shoppers to be vigilant when they are out in town this month after his mobile phone was stolen on Monday. The man who didn’t want to be named had his Samsung Galaxy S5 phone taken from his pocket on Monday afternoon whilst doing some Christmas shopping and he says that shoplifters and pickpockets are out in force at this time of year with the increase of footfall during the festive period. “I would just like to

warn people to make sure they have all their valuables hidden away and not to leave any phones or wallets in open pockets. "These thieves are so quick and I never even noticed them take my phone. It was in my pocket and they obviously just picked it out when I was in the shop.” he explained. Retailers as well as shoppers feel the brunt of shoplifters with the ISME, (the Irish Small & Medium Enterprises Association), warning retailers to be extra vigilant during the Christ-

mas and New Year period as they are being targeted by organised gangs of shoplifters. The Association say that statistically retailers are twice as likely to be victims of shoplifting over the Christmas. The direct shoplifting cost to retailers this year will be in excess of €230m, of which €51m will occur at Christmas alone. This does not take into account the amount spent on security, which adds hundreds of millions on to the cost for retail businesses.

Residents to benefit from improvements The Cox’s Demesne area is set for another improvement after contracts were signed on Thursday, December 4 for the next phase of the Cox’s Demesne Regeneration Project, Phase 2A: Ashling Park Pilot Project This €2.4m contract paves the way for the construction of 14 new housing units along with associated road networks and services plus environmental works. The first phase of the project involved the biggest energy efficiency improvement works project in Ireland, which took place in 2012/13. Almost 2,000 residents benefited from a range of works, provided free of charge, to reduce energy consumption and boost energy efficiency. The process for the latest phase of the regeneration scheme goes back six years and in 2013 involved consultation with residents as to what they felt was

needed in Cox’s Demesne. Cllr Oliver Tully, Cathaoirleach, Louth County Council, spoke of the significance of the Cox’s Demesne Regeneration Project. “The first phase of the project, the Energy Efficiency Improvement Works, saw Louth County Council involved in an inspiring pilot project that authorities around the country took notice of. “I’m delighted to sign these contracts today as Louth County Council continues to show its commitment to work alongside tenants in providing a bright future for Cox’s Demesne”, he said. With work expected to get underway on site in January, Louth County Council officials will be out in the community shortly to host information evenings with the local residents to introduce the contractor McParland Brothers and to inform them of the works that will be taking place in their estate.

Amelia is proof of the need for more support By Paul Byrne

A local mother of a premature baby has added her voice to calls for the state to provide more support services for parents in her situation. Dara McNally and her husband, Brendan, from Knockbridge were among the thousands of parents in Ireland who had a pre-term baby this year and they believe that support is required to help deal with the added stresses of the situation. The couple from Knockbridge had a baby girl called Amelia back in June who was born at 24 weeks and 6 days. According to Dara, Amelia weighed a scarcely believable 1lb 7 1/2 ounces and defied all the odds to still be here today. “My waters just broke for no reason one day when I was at home and before I knew it I was up in Drogheda where the doctors were telling me that the baby would have to be delivered but the chances of her surviving were slim. “I was brought up to the Rotunda where she was delivered and she was so, so small and very sick. It was heartbreaking not being able to hold her and it was a really worrying time for myself and Brendan”, explained Dara. “She was kept for nine weeks

in the Rotunda and a further three weeks in Drogheda and the stress we both had travelling up and down every day was huge. You’re so worried about your baby and you have the extra worry of the expense of travelling up and down every day paying for parking, petrol and meals up there every day. “Thankfully I was put in touch with Jen at Irish Premature Babies and she and her colleagues were amazing. I do think the parents maybe don’t get as much support as is needed during what is a very difficult time and I dread to

think how we would have coped if it wasn’t for Irish Premature Babies”, added Dara. Thankfully Amelia has come on leaps and bounds since June and now weighs a healthy ten pounds. There are on average 4500 premature babies born in Ireland each year which equates to about one in every 16 births. For parents the arrival of a premature baby can be a traumatic and worrying time. A new study by the Irish Premature Babies organisation has highlighted the need for the state to provide more services to support families with a pre-term baby. The report looks at the experience of 600 families throughout the country and details their unique and distinctive experience of having a preterm baby in Ireland. Since 2011, IPB have been gathering responses from the participating families and this will continue over the course of the next 15 years until the babies reach university level. The Irish Premature Babies are a volunteer organisation founded in 2009 who rely on fundraising to help out parents of premature babies. If anybody would like to donate or help in their fundraising efforts send an email to info@ irishprematurebabies.com.

Guide to Surviving the Christmas Season When we struggle all year round, with little cash to spare, we often feel we need to take a break at Christmas – we want our children and our loved ones to have the best. But that doesn’t always mean spending a fortune –particularly a fortune you don’t have. Be open with your family – even Santa has been hit by the recession! Talk to your friends and extended family – do you need to exchange gifts at all? Or would you rather spend time together? Almost no-one has been left untouched by this recession – everyone has less money this year than last year; be the one to bring up the subject in your circle – suggest that this year, 2014, is the year that the spirit of Christmas comes back to your community. Take the time to be with those you love – and those you love will not want you to worry, and to struggle for six months to pay for the gifts they didn’t need. The 12 steps of Christmas 1. Make a list of what you need to buy for Christmas. Divide it into gifts, food, clothes and socialising. Use our Christmas planner to help. 2. Prioritise – if you had a limited amount of money, what could you cut from that list? Work your way through, numbering items in order of importance. 3. Try to estimate how much money you expect to spend on each of these items. What does it add up to ? 4. Is it a very large figure? If the number makes your eyes bulge, look at each individual item again. How can you reduce the cost?

5. What does it add up to now? Is that a better figure? 6. Keep going with this until you get to a number you can live with – it is important to be honest with yourself. 7. This is the amount of money you have decided you NEED for Christmas. 8. If you have been able to put aside a few euro over the year to meet the cost of Christmas, well done. Will it be enough to cover the costs you planned for? 9. If you have not been able to put aside any money, or if what you have saved is not enough, then you have a choice; either you cut the amount you intend to spend again, until your savings can cover it, or you may decide to borrow. 10. Try not to build your plans on the basis of a bonus or overtime payment, or any other payment that you are not absolutely certain you will get – only count the money you can rely on getting. 11. Smart Shopping • Try to get the best value you can when shopping for gifts – look for offers in the shops, three-for-two deals and so on, but remember the value is only there if you actually need the three items. • Stick to cash – you will spend less than using debit and credit cards. • Keep the receipts in case something needs to be exchanged. • Work from a list to avoid unplanned, impulse shopping. • Leave the children at home. • Remember the shops only close for one or two days, so there is no need to stock up on food.

MABS operates a National Helpline, which is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 8pm on 0761 07 2000.

12. Borrowing If you really believe borrowing is your only option, then remember these points: • Only borrow what you truly need and not one cent more • Try to make sure you can pay back this loan before the middle of next year, if at all possible, otherwise it makes it difficult for save for next Christmas. • Find out what the weekly or monthly repayments are going to be and see how this will affect your budget next year – can you afford that amount, and still pay your regular bills and expenses? • When looking for a loan, try to get the best value you can. Generally, loans available from a money lender will cost you much more than a loan from your Credit Union or bank. Using a credit card is also a very expensive way of borrowing money. • Remember to read the terms and conditions of any credit application, make sure you understand what you are getting into. Get advice before you sign. • Contact MABS before borrowing to see what options are available to you. • Before you borrow, look again at your list – is it worth it? Are you sure this is what you and your family need? What is MABS? The Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) is a free, independent, confidential and nonjudgmental service providing ono to one advice to people who are having diffuiculties managing their money or are in debt.

Thought man was skipping taxi queue An Army private who took exception to another man whom he mistakenly thought was trying to skip the queue at a taxi rank, lashed out and struck him on the face. As a result, Alan Finnegan of 156 Greenacres, Dundalk, was told by Judge Patrick Clyne that if he paid €5,000 compensation to the victim and carried out 60 hours of voluntary work by the end of January, he would deal with the case leniently. Dundalk District Court heard that at 1.30am a man who was out socialising left a night club and took his place along with friends in the queue at the taxi rank on Crowe St. He left his friends to talk to another friend further down in the queue and when he came back an issue arose

in Brief

when the defendant thought he was skipping the queue. The man explained that he already been in the queue but was punched in the face. After solicitor Tara Matthews stated that her client was willing to offer €5,000 compensation, Judge Clyne stated that the money would go a long way to alleviating the discomfort of the victim, but he also felt that some restorative justice was required. The judge stated that he was not suggesting Community Service but rather 60 hours of voluntary work as a show of his contrition. He added that in that was done by January 28 he would deal with the case on its merits. The case was adjourned for a week to allow compensation to be paid.

A man whose relationship with his wife was wrecked by alcohol appeared at Dundalk District Court to face a criminal damage charge and a public order charge. John McGinley of 6 Assumption Place, Dundalk, was advised to ‘stay off the sauce’ by Judge Patrick Clyne. Insp Martin Beggy told the court that on Thursday March 20 this year, Gardai had been called to Aldi on the Newry Road, where the defendant had entered but had been asked to leave. He remonstrated with the manager

and became quite abusive. He threw cans of alcohol, valued at €2.79, on the ground and was abusive. Solicitor, Dermot Monahan, who paid €5 compensation, stated that his client had a difficulty with alcohol and that it had wrecked his relationship with his wife. He stated that when his client is off the drink he is very amenable but when he is drinking he can be quite difficult to be around. Judge Clyne ordered the defendant to enter into a peace bond and ordered him to remain alcohol free in public places.

Local dairy farmers call for help By Paul Byrne

An expected drop in milk prices next year means bad news for local dairy farmers with teagasc forecasting declines of up to 25% in dairy incomes in 2015. Following a few good years for dairy farmers Teagasc, the Agriculture and Food Development Authority, warn that the average Irish milk prices in 2015 are expected to fall to 27 cent per litre, a reduction of over 10 cent per litre on the average for 2014. EU Milk quotas are due to finish in March 2015 which will signal big changes in the dairy industry as the sec-

the cost of production in 2014 as the intervention price at the moment was set back in 2009”, explained Matthew. “Co-ops should know at this stage how to deal with volatility and farmers can’t be left carrying the can for the collapse in prices and we are calling on co-ops to support their suppliers. Banks also have to stand by their farmer customers as it is in their interest to insure that they ride out the storm that is coming our way”, warned the local IFA chairman. “Teagasc forecasts net margins to collapse by 82% to just 2% next year. Dairy farmers have invested heavily in their farms to be ready for the ex-

pansion in the sector when quotas go next year ,therefore it is important that the Government takes the current situation very seriously and address the issues to insure that farm families make a margin and that our multi billion euro exports in the dairy sector continues to grow which provides thousands of job’s in our economy” he concluded. Ireland ranks among the world’s top 10 dairy exporting nations, exporting up to 85 per cent of its dairy output to over 90 countries internationally. There are an estimated 18000 dairy farms in the country accounting for roughly 34,000 jobs. Matthew McGreehan

When asked this week to comment on the falling milk prices chairman of Louth IFA Matthew McGreehan pleaded with the government to do something to help out the dairy sector. “Dairy farmers are living through very uncertain times and the IFA are calling on the Minister for Agriculture to seek out new markets and to ensure that EU Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan takes urgent action. He also completed the 1km route alongside his son. The huge crowd of merry-makers started the Santa Run from the back of the Tesco Extra Shopping centre and ended at the Market Square. “There was a massive turnout and we had great support from the Sean O’ Mahony’s, St Pat’s GFC, the Army and Gardai,” said Jimmy. “Young and old alike took part. It was an occasion for everyone in the community. Hopefully, there will be an even bigger turn out next year.” “There will definitely be another Dundalk Santa Run in 2015 as we have 2,500 Santa outfits left over. “Dundalk Chamber of Commerce did a good job of running the event as there was no hassle. News

The Trust would like to welcome everybody to the building and hear their views from 1pm, when an exhibition celebrating the history of the Station House and the DNGR will open to the public and continue daily 10am to 4pm until December 19th. A local Dundalk community group braved the freezing cold weather last Friday night as they slept outside at Market Square to raise money for the local Simon community. Maeve Curtis was one of the hardy souls who took part in the fundraiser last Friday evening and she was quick to thank the people of Dundalk for their ‘outstanding generosity throughout the evening. “This is our second year sleeping out for the Dundalk Simon Community and once again the people who were around town on Friday evening have been remarkably generous. It’s all the more impressive given that we are living through these tough times of austerity.” ,noted Maeve. “It was particularly cold last Friday evening but we were lucky that we had a warm bed to go home to on Saturday morning and fresh clean dry blankets to use for our night out on the streets. The homeless people don’t

13

have these luxuries and they have to sleep out in the cold every night. The Simon are doing a great job trying to help these people out and we were very happy as a group to try and raise some much needed funds for them,” added Maeve. Amongst the twenty strong group who slept outside from 8pm Friday evening until early Saturday morning was 11 year old Jade Taaffe who was the youngest member of the group. According to Maeve the young girl showed wonderful spirit throughout the evening and was a great companion to have throughout the evening. €3400 was raised in total with €2000 raised on the night itself as well as €1400 in the Marshes a week previously. Maeve and all the members of the community group involved thanked Tony’s Pizzeria, the Market Bar and Toales Bar for refreshments offered throughout the evening.

Dundalk Grammar School has once again topped the Louth ‘feeder table’ of secondary schools whose students go onto third level education according to a recent report in the Irish Times. The comprehensive re-

port gives information on all schools around the country and gives a percentage of how many leaving cert students went on to third level. The Grammar School came out top in County Louth with an impressive 81 of it’s 84 Leaving Cert students going on to third level education which equates to

96%. The Grammar scored well provincially lying 14th highest in Leinster. The majority of Grammar students (15) ended up going to college locally in DKIT. St Vincent’s achieved the second highest rating in Dundalk with 137 out of 160 students going on to third level which equals

86% of the total Leaving Cert students. Coming in closely behind St Vincents were the De La Salle (83%), the Bush (79%), Dun Lughaidh (79%) and Coláiste Rís (78%) who all saw more or less four out of every five students go to either university or college. The Marist (St Mary’s)

numbers were down on previous years with 90 of their 168 students (65%) going on to third level while O Fiaich college had slightly less than half (47%) of their students go on for further education. Dunleer’s Scoil Ui Mhuiri came in slightly behind O’Fiach college with 44% of their students going on to

third level. Nationally there were familiar names top of the schools lists with the Teresian School, Dublin 4; Sandford Park School, in Ranelagh, Dublin 6; and Glenstal Abbey, in Co Limerick, filling the first three places.

Water charges protests continue By Paul Byrne

Local protesters who are campaigning against the introduction of water charges have a busy few days in store with a mass protest in Dublin today preceding a local rally which will take place at the Square this Friday at 2pm. The local rally will feature members of the Detroit Water Brigade who have flown in from the USA to show solidarity with Irish protesters. The group describe themselves as a volunteer-led group who group who help families who are at risk of having their water shut off. It says 40pc of Detroit’s population is having their water turned off and they are urging their government to bring in an income based Water affordability plan in Detroit. Maeve Curtis from of the Dundalk Campaign Against Water, Household Tax and Austerity group is delighted to welcome the detroit group to Dundalk and says that many

local protestors plan to travel to Dublin today for the national protest march to the Dáil.

“We look forward to welcoming members from the Detroit anti-water charges group to Dundalk and we will be at the square this Friday, as we are every single Friday to let the government know that we aren’t going away. As our slogan says “From Dundalk to Detroit, water is a human right”, explained Maeve.

“We are holding a people’s assembly and we invite everybody to come down to the square at 2pm if they are opposed to these unfair water charges. The government must be told that we are a proud people and we will not take this lying down”, urged Maeve. Many local campaigners were expected to make the trip to Dublin today for what has been dubbed the ‘National Citizens Movement’ with a march to the Dáil planned as part of the protest.

Rugby club get back to winning ways Dundalk Rugby Club got back to winning ways when they hosted Ashbourne at the Mill Road on Sunday. An Ultan Murphy penalty got Dundalk off the mark, before James McConnon followed up with a try to put their side 8-3 up at the break. McConnon added a second try after the break before Jonathan Williams and Owen McNally crossed the line to ensure victory The seconds also hosted Ashbourne at the Mill Road on Saturday where they recorded a 22-6 win. Ashbourne took an early 6-3 lead before Laurance Steen scored the first try which Paddy Reilly converted to make it 106. Dundalk then finished strongly with a Ciaran Lennon try on 75 minutes before Armagh GAA star, Aaron Kernan, ran clear to score his first try for the club and seal the win. Meanwhile, Dundalk U-14 played host to Tullamore on Saturday in the second phase of the Leinster league. Due to

ers, parents and coaches alike. The Sharks were split into two evenly matched sides, the Black Sharks and the White Sharks and once again they showed up well in some competitive games. Sprockets At The Store The Hot Sprockets will include an appearance at The Spirit Store as part of a nationwide tour to mark the release of their brand new EP “Lost Lessons”. The band will be performing at the local venue on Friday December 12. The band released their sophomore album “Brother Nature” to critical acclaim in June, roaring in at no.11 in the Irish album charts. “Those longing for a band to

take blues to unexpected places will find this record a thing of deep joy. 8/10” Claudia Elliot, Blues Magazine UK. The Sprockets took to the road in celebration of the album with an Irish tour which finished on a high note with a sold out show in the Button Factory. They also toured the UK, Germany, Canada and USA this year, making an appearance on MTV’s “The Real World” in Chicago. They launched their very

own radio show “Honey Skippin’ with The Hot Sprockets” on Radiomade, and their song “Cruisin” graced our television sets as the soundtrack for the new AIB ad campaign. The place where The Hot Sprockets are at their best is on a stage, performing for an audience and November saw the start of a seven week tour of Ireland, which will take the guys right through to Christmas.

Festival hailed a success This year’s Dundalk Festival of Light & Culture proved to be a great success with thousands flocking into the Dundalk town centre and enjoying a packed two-day programme of events. Friday’s event had something for everyone. There was the official opening of Dundalk on Ice and the switching on of the town’s Christmas Tree lights with the honours falling to Louth Cathaoirleach , Cllr Oliver Tully along with Dundalk FC Manager Stephen Kenny. Titan the Robot received a rapturous welcome back to Dundalk and a lot of families made sure they were in the town for his performances over the weekend both at the Market Square and in Marshes Shopping Centre. The street performers were outstanding as they entertained the many people on the streets who were availing of the fantastic offers both at the Craft and Food markets and via the many special offers town centre businesses were offering over the Festival. Animal lovers flocked to the Animal Farm and brought their pets in for the special Blessing of the Animals ceremony, with

21

all donations going to the Louth SPCA The festival fireworks were a sight to behold and Santa’s arrival on the huge Kenworth truck had children staring wide eyed as the man in red had given the reindeers some time off before their big Christmas run. Speaking on the success of the Festival, organising committee member Harry Traynor of Marshes Shopping Centre said “This year’s Festival was definitely worth all the hard word and demonstrates how year on year Dundalk is improving. “This has been a fantastic Christmas experience and it was tremendous to see retailers coming together as a community, being involved in the Festival’s organisation and/or offering promotional discounts to festivalgoers. “Hopefully the positivity created over the Dundalk Festival of Light & Culture will carry on to Christmas and beyond.” The Dundalk Festival of Light & Culture organising committee would like to thank those who generously sponsored and supported the weekend festival.

Councillor disappointed with council response

Councillor Tomás Sharkey has expressed his disappointment at information he has received from council officials relating to the recent works to replace revetments (defences) at Blackrock beach.

“The sea defences on Blackrock beach were badly damaged by storms last winter. Work was carried out to mend these defences known as revetments. However, two weeks ago it became apparent that this work had been damaged

itself by a full tide. “Council officials have informed me that the recent repairs cost the public purse €33,875.87. They have also told me in a response to my question that “Temporary works to protect the damaged re-

vetment will be carried out, and funding for a permanent solution will be sought for 2015.” “All of this makes shocking reading. It is amazing to realise that €33,000 was spent making repairs, only for that repair work

FYC goes from strength to strength

The Friary Youth Club (FYC) has enjoyed a number of successes in recent weeks. First was the holding of its Annual Table Quiz in Byrnes Pub which raised over €1,100 for a lifesaving defibrillator for its recently revamped Youth Centre. Secondly was the club’s appearance on ITV’s ‘I’m A Celebrity’ with its homemade Jungle Call video which was voted second best jungle call of this season and finally was its success in this year’s Santa Run where youth member Dan Keane took first place and youth Leader Sinead O’Hagan took second

place. The leaders and senior members were raising much needed funds for both the club and SOSAD, the suicide prevention charity. Club President Seán Kelly remarked that since the club reopened in early October they have had an incredible response and now have over 300 registered members. The club which runs on a Friday evening from 6.45pm to 9pm is open to anyone from Sxth Class in primary school to all second level students. You can find out more information on our Facebook or Twitter page.’’

to be damaged and be in need of temporary works to protect it. It is doubly embarrassing that Louth County Council will now be applying for more funding to carry out a permanent solution in 2015 when 2014 funding was spent on

what we all thought was the permanent solution.” “I have met numerous people in Blackrock who are aghast at what has transpired and will of course be continuing to call for the careful spending of public money.

No armed guard for cash vans By Tamara O’Connell

Chris Lawson, Dan Keane, Sinead O’Hagan and Seán Kelly

THERE are no armed guards for cash vans in Dundalk anymore for the first time since the early 1970s. The Gardai and Defence Forces stopped providing escorts for cash-in-transit vans outside Dublin earlier this month. Up until recently Gardai and the Defence Forces provided armed escorts for private security firms transporting millions of euros from cash holding centres to banks and ATMs. It is the first time in decades that money is being delivered to banks without an armed escort. The cost of the escorts had been borne by the banks. However, new guidelines pro-

vided by the regulatory Private Security Authority state that the service is no longer required. It is thought the move is due to budget restrictions. Bank officials are said to be highly concerned about the removal of armed guards for cash vans outside of Dublin. Security for the transfers is a matter for the financial institutions themselves.
