The three-day walking event aims to raise funds and awareness for Lighthouse, a Belfastbased charity set up to assist mental health issues.
Lighthouse is an organisation committed to the prevention of suicide and self-harm; the promotion of positive mental health; and the provision of support services to families who have been bereaved due to suicide.
“This year our 60 plus miles route will take us from just north of Dundalk in Co Louth to Newcastle, Co Down,” said The Big Dander 2023 organiser, Brian Elwood.
“The walk will depart from the Circle K garage on the R173 at 9.30am on Saturday, 1 July and will finish at the Slieve brian Elwood.
Donard Hotel in Newcastle.
“Anyone can go along and turn up on the day and they will get a T-shirt and wristband. You don’t have to do the complete walk”
He added: “My wife, Trudi, meets people at the five or six mile markers in her car and will drive you back to where your car is parked.
“There will also be a buddy system in place this year so noone walks alone. If you must walk on your own, you can play The Big Dander playlist on Spotify to keep you company.
“It’s eclectic music suitable for all ages. It’s all upbeat songs. We will also do a Wee Doddle for the last mile.”
Brian continued: “We are encouraging people to join us for the last mile and they can bring along their kids and prams or buggies.
“If anyone would like to donate to support this cause, they can do so via our GoFundMe page or send an email to thebigdander@gmail.com.”
