The ambulance service in Louth has been labelled a ‘sham’ after two vehicles broke down over the weekend, leading to serious questions being asked about the fleet. Sinn Fein councillor, Tomás Sharkey called on the Government to replace the fleet which he claims are well past their sell by date. “The fact we have had three major mechanical issues with our ambulances since March is a sham”, explained Tomás. “As well as that these ambulances are constantly giving warning lights on the dashboard for mechanical issues and they are an accident waiting to

happen. “The whole fleet needs to be replaced and we need to deal with it now. What happened last weekend was yet another incident putting people’s lives in danger. It’s not fair on the people of this county and it’s not fair on the ambulance staff who have had to deal with longer hours, staff shortages and faulty vehicles. From talking to my Sinn Fein colleagues around the country it would seem that we have the worst ambulance service in the country and that has to be sorted out immediately”, he added. The hard-hitting comments came following a weekend where one ambulance broke down on the Continued on Page 14

Louth flag flying high at World Cup By Eunan Whyte

As football supporters across the globe reflect on a World Cup described by many as the best ever, two local fans have memories they will never forget after finding themselves in the thick of the action. Sister and brother, Sharon and David Lennon, experienced the action at first hand by attending the third/fourth play-off game between Brazil and Netherlands where they proudly flew the Louth and Ireland flags. Sharon from Jenkinstown has been living in South America as part of her job with the Department of Foreign Affairs, while David jetted down to Brazil from Toronto where he was spending the summer on a J1 Visa. Currently based in Buenos Aires, Sharon was able to soak up the atmosphere as Argentina made it to the final. “The atmosphere was

fantastic, with big screens erected across Buenos Aires and huge viewing parties for all the Argentinian games. As the tournament went on the excitement got higher and higher, with Argentina and Brazil heading for the final - or so we thought”, she explained.

Along with her partner Tim and his brother Chris on a visit from Australia, Sharon was invited to the German Embassy for the 7-1 win over Brazil where the atmosphere was electric. “We watched the Argentina v Netherlands game at

the main ‘fan fest’ site in Plaza San Martin. There wasn’t an inch of space free and the park was a riot of blue and white. The noise when Maxi netted the final penalty was like nothing I’ve heard before, absolutely deafening.Fans poured onto 9 de Julio, the

O’Connell Street of Buenos Aires for a huge all night party”, she added. After that it was off to Brasilia to watch the 3rd place playoff and to catch up with friends from her four years in the capital. On Saturday afternoon, tickets in hand, we ventured off to the stadium. Despite the defeat to Germany, Bra- Sharon Lennon at the match in Brazil zilian fans were in great spirits, any with large signs stating ‘Obrigado Brasil’ or ‘Sempre Brasileiro’- ‘Thank you Brazil’ or ‘Brazilian Forever’. There was a great buzz around the stadium but with less than two minutes on the clock, we know it wasn’t to be when the Netherlands scored a penalty. “Many fans shouted their displeasure, especially at Felipão/ Felipe Scolari and Fred. But the vast majority of the 58,000 in attendance cheered their team to the last minute, and for quite some time after the final whistle”, continued Sharon.

Calls for Taoiseach to assist local economic recovery By Niamh Kirk

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny visited Carlingford last week to open the new SkyPark and Dundalk Chamber of Commerce took the opportunity to lobby the Fine Gael leader about some local issues. Mr Kenny heard the nine major pre-budget submissions from Dundalk Chamber of Commerce about the need to boost local tourism infrastructure, to improve competitiveness with the North, further integration with the Newry and Mourne Chamber and Council and removing barrier between the north and the republic. The recent economic history of Dundalk was laid out showing the 10,000 jobs lost in the manufacturing business over the past 50 years and the impact of decades of neglect by national business development leadership. New initiatives such as the Gateway Towns, Dundalk/Newry were acknowledged but Dundalk is the most disadvantaged of Irelands nine gateway areas and the unemployment rate is still among the highest in the country. While recent invest-

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny meeting with members of Dundalk Chamber of Commerce

ment in the area by E Bay, PayPal, Prometric and National Pen were welcomed, considerably more needs to be done. Dundalk Chamber of Commerce made a series of suggestions in the official submission. In order to bring sustainable growth in business and jobs the chamber want support in introducing measures to boost cross border trade. In particular they want to see less ‘red-tape’ on setting up payroll and tax clearance for Irish employees in the north and vice versa. They requested that the Government approach their northern counterpart to cut measures that frustrate cross border employment. “Retail is a major em-

ployer in all economies but in this area the distortion caused by different commercial rates regimes within eight miles of Dundalk plus movement on currencies and vat rates has meant retailers see only feast or famine which is killing our high streets of traditional shops,” read the submission. An introduction of a relief scheme for people seeking to invest across the border was suggested and a request the governments on both sides of the border look into facilitating cross jurisdictional business. The need for law enforcement to take a firmer stand on cross-border smuggling in fuel, cigarettes and alcohol has a

dramatic impact on the border economy was also underlined. Restarting of the Narrow Water Bridge project and furthering the coastal walkways were also requested to help boost tourism in the region. “In conclusion, we acknowledge the significant investment from FDI companies in the last 3 years and recognise we got more than our fair share. We strongly believe that the opportunities for further growth in the region are considerable and that as a Gateway area we are well positioned. The infrastructure and population base means that there would be no bottlenecks or impediments to any incentive. This area’s growth will enable the All Island economy to flourish,” it ended.

Dundalk Schoolboys enjoy good run at Gothia tournament

The Dundalk squad that competed in the Gothia tournament in Sweden

Dundalk Schoolboys League under 14 representative team returned home on Sunday evening having enjoyed a very successful tournament at the 40th Gothia Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden. This was the sixth time a team from Dundalk entered the Gothia Cup now known as the World Youth Cup with 1660 teams participating from 73 different nations, making it the biggest youth tournament in the world. The Dundalk team had the prestigious honour of representing Ireland and carrying the Irish flag into the opening ceremony last Monday evening in front of 55,000 spectators at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg where Pele made his World Cup debut for Brazil in 1958. Dundalk sent over an under 14 team which qualified for the A section having achieved second place in their group. They went on to qualify for the last 32 out of 209 teams in their section narrowly losing out 3-2 to eventual finalists Senlis USM from France. The French side who hail from just outside Paris had scored 26 goals in their previous five games

and were in a confident mood going into the game. This confidence translated on to the scoreboard as they raced into a 2-0 lead. However the Dundalk players showed tremendous character to level the game at 2-2 thanks to goals from Kizito Ekwueme and Chad McEneaney with all the goals coming in a breathtaking opening 15 minutes. Dundalk were unlucky not to take the lead before half time when Mark Kilgallen crashed a free kick off the French crossbar. It was more of the same in the second half with Dundalk piling on the pressure searching for a winner and many watching the game felt they should have been awarded a penalty after a blatant foul on McEneaney inside the penalty area but unfortunately for Dundalk the referee gave a free kick on the edge of the box instead. Minutes later the French side regained the lead with their first attack of the second half. Dundalk were camped inside the French half for the remainder of the game but just couldn’t find the goal to put them through to the last 16. Dundalk were devastated after the

final whistle realising how close they were to advancing in the tournament to the quarter finals but it was a really tremendous effort and achievement from all 20 players in the squad. The 30 Dundalk players staff and parents who travelled to Sweden had a fantastic experience and will have memories to carry with them forever. Dundalk squad: Mark Byrne (Glenmuir), David Hayes (Glenmuir Celtic), Aidan Curtin (Rock Celtic), Neill Kerr (c) (Ardee Celtic), Daniel Corcoran (Rock Celtic), Dylan Owens (Shamrocks), Jack McKenna (Glenmuir Celtic), James Prendergast (Quay Celtic), Morgan McCaughey (St Dominics), Liam O’Callaghan (Rock Celtic), Mark KIlgallen (Glenmuir Utd), Tristan Knowles (Ardee Celtic), Odhran Kieran (Quay Celtic), Colm Bracken (Redeemer Utd), Jamie Doherty (Glenmuir Celtic), Liam and Tom Jackson (Ardee Celtic), Kizito Ekwueme (Rock Celtic), Chad McEneaney (Glenmuir Utd), Peter McStravick (Glenmuir Utd). Illegal dumping causing annoyance for residents By Paul Byrne

Illegal dumping is continuing to be a cause of major concern for the residents in college heights. According to one of the residents, who doesn’t wish to be named, the ongoing dumping of huge amounts of household waste in binbags is still a massive issue for residents. “This has been an ongoing problem for over a year now and nobody seems to be able to solve it” noted the frustrated resident. Hundreds of bin bags are constantly been dumped in a bay which is meant to be used for residents to put out their rubbish. “In fairness to the agent who owns the apartment they have cleared up the alleyway a few times but these people keep on coming back and dumping more bags” he added. “I’ve been on to Louth

Some of the rubbish that has been dumped at College Heights

County Council but I’ve been told that as the land is private property there is nothing they can do. It’s very frustrating that this has been going on so long and seemingly can’t be fixed” The illegal dumping is thought to occur late at nights on weekends but as yet nobody has been caught in the act. There have been sightings of rats as the bin bags pile up on top of each other. A spokesperson for the management letting

company operating on behalf of the apartment owners say that they have already spent thousand’s this year cleaning up the area but have been continuously frustrated as the rubbish piles up time and time again. “We have taken away seven skips worth of rubbish from that area already this year but these people keep on coming back and the bin bags pile up again.” explained the management agency letting spokesperson. “There’s another

skip coming this week but you can be sure the dumpers will be back almost as soon as the skip is taken away. Louth County Council’s Paddy Donnelly said that litter wardens were aware of the problem but as the dumping is on private property the council’s hands were tied. He said that the council were willing to pursue any individuals who were identified and confirmed as illegal dumpers.

Drugs found in man’s home A man who turned to drugs when his marriage was in difficulty found himself appearing at Dundalk District Court after drugs were found in his home. Mariusz Wozniak of 42 Ashbrook, Tom Bellew Ave, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of drugs at his home

on January 26, 2013. On that date Gardai found cannabis herb valued at €994 along with a small quantity of amphetamines. He admitted owning the drug during interview. Solicitor, Paula Tiernan, stated that he was taking drugs due to the break-up of his marriage as

the family situation was causing him difficulty. She added that this case had been a harsh lesson for the father of two who has been living in the country for nine years. Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case to November 15 for a Probation Report.

Warning over rise in cattle thefts in Louth The Irish Farmers Association has warned that cattle theft is a continuing in North Louth and a cause of major concern to local farmers. Anthony Duffy from Doolargy, Ravensdale had five bullocks worth €7,500 stolen last week. The two Charolais, two Aberdeen Angus and one black Hereford were taken from his field after 10.30pm on Tuesday July 8. When Anthony went to the field the following morning to check on the cattle that were destined to be sent to the factory that same week they were gone. “The thieves had prised the gate open and put it

back so people wouldn’t notice. It’s becoming a major problem all over the country but especially on the border Counties. They suspect that my cattle were brought to illegal abattoirs and are more than likely slaughtered by now. It is a huge loss to any farmer to loose cattle after looking after them for two years,” he said. Mr Duffy doesn’t have insurance to cover the loss as only one insurer FBD, has only recently begun to offer livestock cover. “The Garda, PSNI and Departments on each side of the border are going to have to cooperate more to deal

with this serious problem. I hope to also meet with the local Superintendent to discuss this matter. I also ask for local people especially in rural areas to be vigilant and to raise an alarm if they see or suspect suspicious activity. If anyone in the area had seen anything please report it to the Gardai or County Chairman.” In County Louth the number of reported cattle thefts increased by more than 600% between 2012 and 2013. A cross border liaison Group comprising the SIU, Gardai and PSNI liaise and investigate the theft of livestock on an all Ireland At the farm gate where the cattle were stolen is farmer Anthony Duffy and Matthew basis. Property tax issue will be raised by County Council The measure of the local representatives will be tested as the debate around whether Louth County Council should reduce the Local Property Tax is set to ignite. Powers given to local authorities under the Finance Local Property Tax Bill mean they can make an upward or downward adjustment by as much as 15 per cent. Under the new regulations the process of changing the local

property tax requires public consultation. Following a public consultation a public report must be drawn up detailing the impact any changes will have on homeowners and on council finances. It is after the publication of this report that the council management will propose an increase, reduction or maintenance and councilors will be asked to vote accordingly. In a statement from Louth

County Council they speculate that changes to the local property tax could ‘potentially’ impact on council income and in turn the services that they can provide. It has already been indicated in a national report that Louth County Council is set to loose out under the new local authority funding proposals. With funding cuts coming through a number of streams and rate payments in Louth be-

ing among the lowest nationally, homeowerns may lose out on the potential 15 % reduction. However Sinn Fein have confirmed that they are to officially call for the full 15 per cent cut in the Local Property Tax which has received cross party support in other constituencies. Other local authorities have already declared their positions on the proposals, with Fingal County Council putting family income first and reducing their

income from the community by about €5m. Dun Laoghaire/ Rathdown is planning to follow suit. Submissions on the adjustment of the Property Tax, can be made in writing to the Local Property Tax, Finance Section, Louth County Council Co. Hall, Dundalk or email lptsection@ louthcoco.ie. Closing date for receipt of submissions is Wednesday August 20.

A man who threatened to kill a Garda after she took drink from him was sentenced to two months in prison at Dundalk District Court. Paul Jackson of Mill Road, Dundalk held aloft a concreted block and shouted “I don’t care if you are a woman, I’m going to kill you” on April 9 this year. The court heard that on that day a Garda called to Patrick Tierney Cres-

cent where she encountered the defendant at the door of a house. He asked her what she was doing and she asked him to leave the area. When the Garda, who was on her own and felt intimidated, asked Mr Jackson to stop drinking, he told her to ‘f*** off”, at which point she seized the alcohol. He continued to be abusive and at that stage threatened to kill her. When she went to the patrol car to

call for assistance he threw the block on the ground and walked away. Gardai arrived and pepper spray was used as the defendant resisted arrest. Insp Martin Beggy stated that it was a frightening experience for the Garda as she was on her own. Solicitor for Paul Jackson stated that the defendant, who was not yet 22, was cursed with drink and he loses all sense of decency when drinking. He added

that he had more serious charges to face later in the year. Judge Flann Brennan remarked that the defendant had an appalling record and that these were serious matters. He imposed a two-month sentence in respect of threatening to kill or cause serious harm, obstructing a peace officer, possession of article with intent to cause injury and intoxication in a public place.

Campaign to stop scramblers on mountains Louth IFA lent their support to the campaign to stop scramblers on the Cooley Mountains when they distributed leaflets at Jonesboro on Sunday July 13. Matthew McGreehan and Mick Larkin of Louth IFA took the action as part of the effort to stop people from using scramblers and quads on the Cooley Mountains as it damages the landscape. The local residents set up a stop mountain scramblers committee which Matthew was appointed chairman. Stop Mountain Scramblers is an alliance of farmers, walkers, conservationists and other interested parties who have come together as a result of the terrible and irreparable damage being done to our livelihoods, our environment and our heritage. Matthew, who is Louth IFA Chairman, outlined the reasons for forming the committee. “The hills and mountains are such an appreciated area to local residents and tourists, and the scramblers and quads are just ruining the landscape and quality of the hills and

mountains. We want to keep the area as well kept as we can and protect the sheep grazing them. “We are appealing to those involved in the use of these scramblers and quads in the hills of North Louth and South Armagh to stop im-

mediately. We also appeal to the parents of the younger people involved to get them to stop. It may appear to those involved that they are merely having some fun but what they are doing is dangerous, needless vandalism and illegal”, he added.

Karate clubs converge on town for training session

Dundalk Karate club members with IKFC Coach Vincent Clarke

Dundalk Karate recently hosted an IKFC (Irish Karate Federation Commission) Squad Training recently in the Redeemer Family Resource Centre where clubs from all over Ireland were invited to attend. Every Karateka in attendance were firstly put through their individual Kata (form), where everything from the basic Pinan Nidan for the lower grades to the more advanced

Katas such as Basai or Sochin for the Brown and Black belts. After a quick break everyone was then back to the tatami matts for Kumite (fighting), where a simple drill of punches was introduced for everyone. This drill for the purple, brown and black belts was then enhanced even more to challenge their abilities, speed and fitness. Each Karateka thrived under Coach Vincent Clarkes instruction and as each

student left, everyone was smiling with knowledge that they had learnt something new. Sensei Mary Marcus, Head of Dundalk Karate expressed her delight with the event. “With schools on holidays, the good weather continuing and numerous other sporting fixtures on the same day, it was fantastic to see so many dedicated members not only of Dundalk Karate attending this brilliant oppor-

tunity, but to see clubs travelling from as far as Dublin, made this IKFC Squad Training session a huge success. “These opportunities don’t happen very often as we usually end up travelling to Dublin or even further afield for squad trainings, so to be able to host this IKFC Squad Training in the Redeemer Family Resource Centre was something that everyone from Dundalk Karate could benefit from.”

Man went to Oz to escape drug culture

Dundalk Leader 23rd July 2014

A man who was embroiled in the culture of drugs left Ireland for Australia where he succeeded in turning his life around. However, Darren Shevlin from Crossbeigh, Knockbridge, accepted that while he succeeded in his objective, he was wrong to avoid his responsibilities to the court where he faced drugs charges. The defendant had been charged with possession of ecstasy tablets valued at €2,465 and Xanax valued at €220 when Gardai searched 66 Woodbury Gardens, Dundalk, on September 30, 2011. He also had €3,300 in his possession and told Gardai that it was the proceeds of drug sales. Solicitor, Dermot Lavery, accepted that his client had left the country and didn’t face the charges, but explained that his actions had the desired effect. “Darren Shevlin, at the time of the offences, was embroiled in the culture of taking and dealing drugs, and he worked in the criminal underground that controls the trade.

“He made the decision that was illegal by going to Australia to avoid court. He accepts that what he did was clearly wrong but it appears to have achieved its purpose. He felt that he was so embroiled in drugs that he had to go away and the court was the least of his worries”, added Mr Lavery. “Over 18 months in Australia he worked in the construction industry and almost miraculously became drug-free, and now he is home and back working. “I appreciate that court can’t allow people to decide with problems in their own way but if he had not left he would be no further on”, added Mr Lavery who suggested that as the case was so extraordinary the court would not be setting a precedent in dealing with him in a particular way. Judge Flann Brennan agreed to adjourn the case for a Probation Report to October 1, but stated: “In essence he is asking me to establish a precedent that goes to the heart of the premise of justice”.

Customers help Tesco make donations to local charities By Caoimhe Duffy

Tesco Ireland has launched a new initiative, which will involve their 146 stores donating €1,000 to local causes every six weeks. Tesco customers now have the opportunity to nominate any local charity or good cause,

from youth clubs to aid for the elderly. The first three charities that have been selected are SOSAD, Oakdene and Turas, all of which provide much needed help and counselling to those dealing with depression, anxiety, loss or suicide. Whether a Tesco

customer spends 50c or €50, they will each be given a token to give to their selected charity. These tokens will then be counted up after the six week period and will determine which charity or cause receives the most sizable donation. All of the nominated charities will secure a

contribution from Tesco Ireland, who hope to donate a total of €1m annually across the country. Customers can select a cause that’s close to their own heart by filling out a short form and handing it to any member of staff at the customer service desk.

issue and when they attended the house they were told that the defendant had been asked to leave as he was causing an issue. When asked to leave the house by Gardai he did so, but when he reached the footpath he became abusive and used expletives. He was very drunk and when asked to leave the area by Gardai he refused and started flailing his arms

in an aggressive manner. Officers had to hold him on the ground, put on handcuffs and arrested him for his own safety. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client had a lot of drink and apologised for his actions. He added that when drink is not on board his client is a very articulate individual who regrets being before the court so often.

Question: Before he left the health ministry James Reilly proposed increasing cigarette prices to €20 a packet. Is this a good idea to deter smoking?

Jamie O’Brien

Brendan Gaughran

Jeremiah Aigbodion

I think they should focus on addiction issue rather than simply putting the price up.

I’m just glad they got him out of the health ministry. He was a very poor health minister so I wouldn’t support any of his suggestions.

I think it’s a good idea but the minister also needs to focus on alcohol. It’s probably an even bigger problem in this country.

Philip Murphy I think it’s a fabulous idea. Anything to deter people smoking is a good idea. €20 sounds about right to me for a packet.

Niamh Brady I don’t think it would make any difference. They are going to be bought regardless of what price they are. People will always find the money.

Champions prepare to defend Poc Fada titles By Paul Byrne

The beautiful surroundings of the Annaverna mountains will once again play host to the 53rd All Ireland Poc Fadá hurling and camogie finals on Saturday August 2. Former Tipperary goalkeeper Brendan Cummins and Waterford’s Patricia Jackman will be hoping to defend their All Ireland Craobh na hÉireann titles when they return to Annaverna for the M Donnelly All-Ireland Poc Fada final on Saturday week. Brendan is looking to claim a record eighth All Ireland title (He currently shares the record with Ger Cunningham) while the peerless Patricia Jackman is looking to make it six in a row in the ladies section.

The Poc Fada began over 50 years ago in the Annaverna mountains with Dundalk’s Damien Callan becoming the first ever winner of the event in 1960. The following year the event was opened up to competitors all over the country and officially named as The All Ireland Poc Fada Championships. Speaking at the launch of this year’s event, chairman of the national Poc Fada committee Humphrey Kelleher stated that the Annaverna Mountains was a spectacular venue for a spectacular competition. “This is a truly unique event and you should be proud to have it on your doorsteps”, noted Humphrey. The Cooley mountains have been synonymous with the Poc Fada event

for more than 50 years and they have proven to be a great match. People from all over the country dream of getting the chance to play in the All Ireland Poc Fada finals in Co. Louth because this is the home of Poc Fada. “This is probably the only national event that is held in the north east and you should be very proud of what is a fantastic competition.”, added Humphrey. Competitors must puck a sliotar with a hurley (they may lift and strike or hit the ball from the hand). They play to the top of Carn an Mhadaidh and after a short break continue back down to finish in Aghameen. The whole course measures over 5km. An Corn Cuailgne (“The Cooley Cup”) is awarded to the player who takes the lowest

number of pucks. Ties are broken by the distance by which the player’s last puck crosses the finish line. The concept of the competition originates in the Irish legend of “Táin Bó Cuailgne” when Cúchulainn, who as the boy Setanta set out from his home to the King’s court at Emain Macha hitting his sliotar before him and running ahead to catch it. This year competition will see twelve men, seven ladies and four U16s battle it out in their particular sections. This event will begin at 11:30pm on Saturday August 2 on the Annaverna mountains. Anybody who plans to attend are advised to dress suitably for the mountain as weather conditions can vary. The launch of the Poc Fada was held at The Square on Friday afternoon

Dundalk Sinn Féin today held a protest to show their solidarity with the people of Gaza who are under siege. At the time of the protest, Israel had resumed its rocket fire on Gaza after a brief ceasefire. Gaza is one of the most densely populated areas in the world so any rocket that is fired into

it will find civilian casualties. There have been countless images and videos lately on social media documenting the horrors faced by the Palestinian people. This cross community event which saw around 500 people in attendance was a way of showing their sup-

port for the besieged Palestinians. One woman at the event said “I have seen these images on Facebook and wanted to do more than just ‘like and share’, I felt moved to come here today and show my support.” Similar events are organised for the day across the country.

Lions Club gift keeps on giving Dundalk Leader 23rd July 2014

14

Ten years ago following one of the worst tsunamis in living memory, the Dundalk Lions Club purchased a boat which they donated to a Sri Lankan village to help local fishermen rebuild their lives. A decade on, news has filtered back that the boat is still being used by the locals, after being spotted by a local woman on holiday in the area. Emma Savage has sent a message back to Dundalk from the boat’s owner Yakoob Sehuthamby thanking the Lions Club for their generous donation which helped him get his livelihood back. Emma, from Eimear Terrace in Dundalk is currently enjoying a holiday in Sri Lanka and was strolling along Arugam

Bay when she spied a familiar looking name on the side of one of the boats. “I have been travelling around Sri Lanka for the last three weeks and as I was walking along the beach in Arugam Bay I noticed a blue and white boat with the words Dundalk Lions Club emblazoned on the side”, explained Emma. “I decided to do a bit of investigating and I eventually got in contact with Yakoob, the fisherman who owns the boat. He told me that he lost his boat in the tsunami in 2004 and received his boat from the Lions Club in 2005. “He was so appreciative of the gift as the tsunami left him and his family with nothing due to the devastation it left in

its wake. “Five hundred people were killed in this short stretch of beach of arugam bay where he has lived all his life with his family and worked as a fisherman. The whole community was affected and really appreciated foreign aid”, added Emma. Emma, a student in DKIT, was rewarded for her investigative skills with an invitation to spend the day fishing with Yakoob on his beloved boat an experience which she described as an amazing experience. New Lions Club president Declan Dempsey was delighted to hear Emma’s story and was delighted to receive the message of thanks from Yakoob.

“I remember back in 2005 that we made a decision to send them a boat rather than send out food parcels as we sort of thought it would be better to give them something that would last years rather than days or weeks. “It was our old president Seamus Gormley who proposed the idea and together the Lions Club bought a boat and sent it out. That’s the last you expect to hear about it”, explained Declan “So it was a lovely surprise for us when Emma sent us a picture of the boat ten years later still looking in good shape. “Hopefully it will still be in action in ten more years“, he Emma Savage with Yakoob Sehuthamby added.

Participation required for Louth Integration Strategy The Integration Centre is calling on individuals from minority communities (Church of Ireland, Irish Traveller community, Migrants, Asian Community and Muslim Community), service providers, agencies, and organisations to attend one of the planning sessions, to make their voice heard and to document the needs of minority communities and

what can be done to make Louth an inclusive and better place to reside. The Integration strategy will be a long-term action plan on the priority needs of minority communities in Co Louth, to address their current challenges in other to advance their inclusion in the society. Tinu Achioya, the coordinator

of Louth Minority Ethnic Consortium (LMEC) said “We need the participation and support of Louth County Council members, County Councilors, An Garda Síochána, LMETB, Louth Leader Partnership, service providers and other local stakeholders in Louth. “An integration strategy is important and it is long due in Co

Martin claims another title

Martin Grey Winning the IVCA National Championships.

For the third time in four years Cuchulainn’s Martin Grey has won the National Championships in his age category. This year Martin took the gold medal in the 60-69 age group as part of the Irish Veteran Cyclists Association National Championships. Martin was active from the gun and was part of a five-man group that went away early in the race. The group worked well together to establish a lead and in the final 15km Martin attacked to take a solo win, to add to his two other gold medals and a silver from 2013. In a separate age category Jimmy Flynn went agonisingly close to a medal when he was fourth man across the line in a close knit sprint. Brendan Dunne, Aidan Delaney, Damien Faulkner and

Dale Copas all finished comfortably in the main bunch in their own races. Open racing was held in Dunboyne, on Sunday, the main race was 120km long and Cuchulainn’s Colm Quinn and Liam Dolan were racing. With 80km to go Dolan found himself in the day’s breakaway of 10 riders. As the race drew to a close the break was quickly being brought back by the main bunch when Dolan managed to escape again with Sean McKenna of Dublin’s UCD and Alistair McCauley of Phoenix Cycling Club in Belfast. They stayed away to the line with McKenna taking the win ahead of McCauley and Dolan in third. In the support race both Tomás McCabe and Aidan Cunningham finished in the top 20.

Louth. The planning sessions are an opportunity to have an action plan to deal with the issues faced by minority communities living in Louth, and to advance positive relations and understanding between minority communities and the wider community to advance a peaceful and inclusive society in Co Louth”. “You can also contact The In-

tegration Centre if you want the organisation to organise a separate planning meeting with your community between the month of July and the first week in August 2014. For more information contact: Tosin Omiyale, tosin@integrationcentre.ie (0872661347) or The Integration Centre (01-6453070).

Darren Clarke of Stonetown Upper, Corcreaghy, Louth Village, admitted cashing a cheque at the Crowe’s Nest, Francis St to the value of €120 on January 18, and another for €380 at the same location on January 23. The cheques had been stolen during a burglary at Clanbrassil St. Solicitor, Sean T O”Reilly, stated that his client was on Social Welfare but anxious to pay compensation and he asked for time to address the issue. Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case to October 1 and expressed the view that the defendant should have the total paid back by then.

Ambulance service branded a sham Continued From Page 1

motorway while taking a seriously ill patient to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, while another filled up with smoke as the crew were returning to Dundalk from Drogheda. These incidents come after a wheel came off an ambulance at the beginning of March this year. The HSE confirmed that they received a call to a suspected heart attack on Saturday evening in Dundalk and attended. On the journey back to the Lourdes Hospital with the patient on board the ambulance broke down, stopping on the side of the road near Dunleer. It is a nightmare scenario as the golden hour is the vital window of opportunity that victims of heart attack have to start getting oxygen to the heart muscle before irreparable damage is

done. The patient with her daughter and two attending paramedics had to wait for around 30 minutes for the second ambulance to arrive. In all, from the alert being raised to the patient arriving, it took the ambulances more than 90 minutes to get the patient to the hospital which was a 30 minute drive away. But this was not the only ambulance failure over the weekend, the following day a second ambulance had a breakdown. On returning to Dundalk from Drogheda an ambulance filled up with smoke and the crew sounded the alarm. There was no one travelling in the ambulance at the time and the HSE claim there was no impact on service delivery. The rescuers being rescued is a recurring and unsettling theme in recent months in Co Louth.

In March the back wheel came off an ambulance travelling back to its station prompting calls from opposition TDs Seamus Kirk and Gerry Adams for a wider investigation into the condition of emergency vehicles. There have been repeated incidents of patients waiting longer than necessary for an emergency response vehicles and disorder in some emergency responses. These have prompted calls for reviews into the general level of emergency staffing provision that have gone unheeded. When asked how the health service can move to reassure the North East there is adequate provision the HSE said that the National Ambulance Service (NAS) has a “robust service and maintenance programme in place and takes these incidents seriously.” They pointed to manufacture guide-

lines and national reg- had already been in use ulations on ambulance prior to the two ambumaintenance which lances failures.

Family Notices in memoriam

in memoriam

McKENNA 1st Anniversary Remembrance In loving memory of Pearse McKenna, who died on 27th July 2013, late of Rockfield Court, Hoey's Lane, Dundalk. Don't think of him as gone away, His journey's just begun, He holds so many facets, this earth is only one. Just think of him as resting, From the sorrow and the tears, In a place of warmth and comfort, Where there are no days and years. Think of how he must be wishing, That we could know today, How nothing but our sadness, Can really pass away. And think of him as living, In the hearts of those he touched, For nothing loved is ever lost, And he was loved so very much. —Deeply loved and sadly missed by your wife Sheena, daughter Taragh and all the McKenna Family. Anniversary Mass 11am St. Joseph's (Redemporist Church) Sunday 27th July.

ADRIAN SKEHAN In loving memory of Adrian Skehan, 256 Greenacres, Dundalk, whose first anniversary occurred on 20th July, 2014. Always in our thoughts and prayers, And always in our hearts. —Always remembered by your loving family.

Last week the Polish Embassy travelled to Dundalk to forge business with local companies. Jacek Jedruszak, Head of Trade & Investment Promotion Section of the Polish Embassy said he was delighted with the number and variety of contacts and was sure that the visit would enhance trade in both directions. Due to the success of the meetings, Dundalk Chamber will play host to more Embassies in the near future, including the Hungarian and Brazilian Embassy which will be taking place in September and October.

novena

From our Lady of Medugorje Message of June 25th (33rd Anniversary) “Dear children! The Most High is giving me the grace that I shall be with you and to lead you in prayer towards the way of peace. Your heart and soul thirst for peace and love, for God and His joy. Therefore, little children, pray, pray, pray and in prayer you will discover the wisdom of living. I bless you all and intercede for each of you before my Son Jesus. Thank you for having responded to my call.” NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I asked you for many favours. This time I ask you for this special favour (mention it). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days. Promise publication and favours will be granted. (never known to fail). M.W.

Dundalk Show’s its pride The international Pride or Rainbow flag flew on Dundalk’s Town Hall last week and is thought to be one of the first occasions in regional Ireland that it has appeared on a local government building. Speaking at the launch of Ken Finnegan’s pride week photographic exhibition ‘RELATE’ in Louth Museum, Chairperson of Louth County Council Oliver Tully said that the local government had committed to supporting similar local and national events by

flying their official flags. “My colleague Councillor Edel Corrigan successfully proposed a motion at the first meeting of the new Dundalk municipal district committee for the rainbow flag to be flown over Dundalk town Hall,” said Louth TD Gerry Adams, congratulating Outcomers Centre on their fifth annual Pride Week. “Pride week provides an opportunity to celebrate LGBT activism and rights issues,” he added.

With the announcement of a marriage equality referendum for 2015 the issue was high on the agenda all week receiving cross party support. Senator Moran raised the matter in the Seanad noting the great work done by everyone involved “I have watched the festival grow in strength over the last five years and I was delighted to take part on Monday. I commend Dundalk Outcomers and everybody who is taking part in this excellent and inclusive initiative,” she said.

Temperatures to soar at Blackrock Seaside Festival By Niamh Kirk Blackrock Seaside festival is set to go ahead this year and with temperatures set to soar, the beach festival will attract both young and old. The festival’s small organising committee was strained with the workload of organising the event and began having doubts as to whether it could go ahead. But such was their dedication to seeing a large scale community day take place in Blackrock they have plunged right in. “We really wanted to see a day where young and old could come out together and just enjoy themselves. The Blackrock Tidytowns does such brilliant work and the more the village can do together, the better we do and the better it is for all of us,” said Caroline, one

of the festivals core organisers. The organisers are hoping to recruit more volunteers to help run the festival over the weekend of August 16 and 17. The festival will see the return of some favourite events, the chilli eating contest and the cook-off (this year curry) will welcome those with a competitive culinary streak. While after three years there are some scores to settle in the increasingly popular tug-of-war. Taking advantage of the location Beach Volleyball has been added to the festivals events. Teams are asked to sign up for the event which is run on a full size court complete with equipment as soon as possible. The Blackrock Festival also features live music with The Flaws, Richard

Richard, The Beached Whales, the Rollers and DJ Brand New Secondhand girl hitting the beach stage. Craftmakers, artisan food producers and stall-owners will line the beachfront. The festival should be in store for an added boost after Blackrock was featured in the Irish Central’s Best Small Towns to Visit This Summer list. The Irish American

Pepper spray used after man became aggressive A man, who had to be restrained after he became aggressive to Gardai, has been given the opportunity to avoid a jail term if he is found suitable for Community Service. Sean Ward of 16 Oldbridge, Toberona, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to two public order charges and a criminal damage charge following an incident on February 16 this year. The court heard that on that date Gardai received reports of an intoxicated male causing annoyance and when officers arrived

they met the defendant at the front door of the house. When he was asked to leave Mr Ward became abusive to Gardai and told them he knew where they lived. Pepper spray was used to restrain the defendant and in the struggle the wiper arm of the patrol car was removed by the defendant. Mr Ward also pleaded guilty to taking goods to the value of €401.39 from Dunnes on November 26, 2013. Solicitor, Dermot Lavery, stated that, although he had brought

it on himself, his client came out worst in the incident as he suffered the indignity and hardship of pepper spray. He acknowledged that Mr Ward had a bad record but asked Judge Flann Brennan not to impose a custodial sentence. He stated that in relation to the theft, all items had been recovered. Judge Brennan stated that he would consider imposing 150 hours of Community Service in lieu of six months in prison as he adjourned the case for a report to October 1.

NEW PANDA CROSS

The new second-generation Fiat Panda Cross 4x4 will go on sale early next year. The Panda Cross is based on the current Panda 4x4 but according to Fiat adds more “capability, attitude and fun”. There is the choice of two engines, either a 90hp/145Nm 0.9 TwinAir Turbo petrol unit or if you prefer an 80hp/190Nm 1.3 MultiJet II diesel. The Panda Cross features Terrain Control with three modes, ‘Auto’, ‘Off-Road’ and ‘Hill Descent Control’. The Auto (normal) mode automatically distributes the engine torque between the front and rear axles without requiring any input from the driver. In normal

n

conditions 98 per cent of the power is driven through the front-wheels – should traction begin to fail, the power can be re-distributed to aid traction. In Off-Road mode, the allwheel drive function is permanently activated a speeds up to 30 mph. The Electronic Locking Differential (ELD) is engaged, ASR intervention is disengaged and to improve traction on slippery terrain (e.g. snow, ice, gravel or mud), the ESC system is employed to brake slipping wheels which in turn transferring the engine’s torque to those wheels with the most grip Hill Descent Control helps the driver to descend tricky hills

without any input bar steering, ideal in off road condition or on icy roads. There are scratch- and bumpresistant corner sections for the bumper and a skid plate to protect the underneath. The ground clearance of diesel model is 158 mm and 161 mm for the petrol. The approach angle is 24 degrees, the departure angle is 34 degrees and the breakover angle is 21 degrees. It can tackle a maximum gradient of 70 percent and lateral gradients of up to 55 percent. Plus the Panda Cross is fitted with 185/65R15 Mud & Snow tyres which are larger than on the standard 4x4 model.

NEW smart models

A brand new smart fortwo (2-seats) and forfour (4-seats) will go on sale next year. The new smart models were co-developed by Mercedes and Renault, sharing allot in common with the new Renault Twingo. Unlike the previous smart forfour the new model is an extended four-door four-seat version of the forTwo – so it remains just as cute. The fortwo is 2.69 m long, where the forfour measures in at 3.49 m, it gets a long wheelbase as you would expect. Also the forfour can accommodate more luggage, with the back seats folded down there is a level load surface measuring 1285 x 996 mm with a cargo volume of up to 975 litres. The loading length with the front passenger seat backrest folded forward is 2.22 metres. There will be the choice of three three-cylinder engines rated at 60 hp, 71 hp and 90 hp, with the option of either a five-speed manual transmis-

sion or the twinamic automatic dual clutch transmission, which promises an end to the jerky auto transmission of old. Although at launch though there will only be the option of two engines, the naturally aspirated 999 cc three-cylinder 71hp/91Nm unit and the turbocharged 898 cc 90hp / 135 Nm engine with automatic stop/ start. The entry level 60hp engine will join the line-up a few months after launch. There are three trim levels, ‘passion’, ‘prime’ and ‘proxy’. All models will feature LED daytime driving lights, central locking with radio remote control, visual locking-verification

signal and immobiliser, cruise control with limiter (variable speed limitation), and exterior temperature indicator with frost warning, instrument cluster with monochrome LCD display and trip computer and electric windows in the front. Top-of-the-range models will be available with touch screen multi-media systems offering navigation and smartphone integration (with smart apps). There will even a be a JBL sound system, comprising a 6-channel DSP amplifier (240 W) eight speaker system in the fortwo and an 8-channel DSP amplifier (320 W) twelve speaker set-up for the forfour
