Ken completes marathon for Cara Cancer By Paul Byrne A Dundalk man who has been living in Croydon for the past 20 years returned to Ireland this week to run the Dublin City Marathon in aid of a local cancer care centre. Ken Cumiskey along with his pal Rahim Mir decided to run Monday’s marathon to raise funds for the Cara Cancer Care Centre. Ken’s dad Eoin was diagnosed with cancer last year and according to Ken he was overwhelmed at the support Cara offered his father and pledged to give something back. “When Dad was sick one of the things that struck me was the important service places like Cara offer to people with cancer. The fact they are here to listen to people and allow them to talk honestly and openly about their illness is fantastic. Thankfully Dad is in remission now and all is going well but we’ll never forget the after care support he received from Cara”, explained Ken. “Myself and Rahim decided about four or

five months ago that we would run the Dublin City Marathon and try and raise some money for Cara. This will be my seventh marathon in total but my first in a long time. We’ve been training hard for the past four months so hopefully we’ll be able to complete the race”, added Ken. Ken who originally hails from St Nicholas Avenue did indeed complete the race coming home in a respectable time of 5 hours and 19 minutes. Cara Cancer Support Centre opened in April of this year and offer support to people living
with cancer. The centre provide a supportive environment where patients and family members can come to find solace and avail of the experience of cancer survivors.

Water charges protest continues By Paul Byrne A protest against the controversial water charge will take place this Saturday in Dundalk. The march is one of a number of similar marches that will take place all around the country as people voice their opposition to the water tax. The march begins at 2pm at the Fairgreen and will make its way to Market Square via Crowe St and Park St. Maeve Curtis who has helped to organise the march says that it’s time for the people of Dundalk to stand up and let the government know they will not accept this latest tax. “It is time for people of this town to let the Government know that we are completely opposed to the double taxation of water. We already pay on average €560 a year for water and it is not right to ask us to pay more. Our parents have paid for the infrastructure and the water belongs to us. It’s

ours and is not for sale”, explained Maeve. Water is a human right and it is vitally important that it stays in public ownership. It cannot be privatised and this government cannot be allowed to go down that road. Water is a source of all human life. Without water there is nothing. Whoever controls water controls the planet. We are ex-
pecting a big turnout on Saturday and hopefully the government get the message as they see thousands of people all over the country out marching on Saturday”, added Maeve. Irish Water recently announced that there would be an extension to the deadline for water charge applications which was due to end on October 31.
The new deadline is for the end of November 2014 and it means the company will issue first bills to households at the end of January 2015 rather than the beginning of the month which had been the original plan. Registering before the November deadline enables people to receive household allowances.

gold in Germany. 21-year-old Stephen won the U-22 Irish National title on Friday morning after his opponent had to pull out of the final due to injury. Broadhurst’s semi final victory over Taylor McGoldrick proved to be his final bout of yet another highly successful outing in the National Stadium for the Dealgan boxer. Next on the
agenda for the talented Muirhevnamor man is senior glory having won everything there is to be won at junior level. Stephen’s sister Amy made it a week to remember for the Broadhursts when she claimed gold after outclassing Swedish boxer Sofia Nilson in the final. Amy was part of a Leinster team who travelled to Germany for the Queens
Cup finals. The 17-yearold southpaw was looking to bounce back having been on the wrong end of a horrendous decision at the European Youth and Junior Championships in Italy last July when she was controversially denied gold. The Dealgan BC ace dominated each of her opponents and as well as picking up gold she was awarded the best technical boxer at the championships as she impressed the judges with her performances. Proud dad Tony was understandably delighted to see his offspring perform with such skill and praised the duo for their hard work and dedication. “As a dad and a coach it was such a great week to see Amy and Stephen
doing so well. You see how much work they put in throughout the year and it’s great to see them get their rewards. Their brother Paul is also doing very well and it’s fantastic to see the three of them reaching their goals”, noted a proud Tony. “It’s been a great week for Dealgan boxing club with Alan Kelly also doing really well and our boxers who travelled to Armagh all performing really well. Next year Stephen will be 23 and he plans on moving up to the Seniors where he hopes to win a national title. Amy is down to fight her rival Ciara Ginty in Dublin next month so she will be keeping busy as she prepares for that fight”, added Tony.

One of Dundalk’s longest established businesses, Lally’s Superstore, is celebrated the refurbishment of their superstore on the Coe’s Road on Friday last. The event saw a large number of customers queuing up outside the premises in anticipation of the launch. The shop was officially opened by Dundalk Chamber of Commerce President, Paddy Matthews. Lally’s have always prided themselves on their service back-up and they have recently expanded to include their own IT service. Paul Byrne reports on an historic night for Dundalk FC
Stephen reflects on ‘special night’
Andy Boyle and Stephen O'Donnell lift the league trophy in front of ecstatic team-mates.
Dundalk FC’s magnificent season ended in celebration on Friday evening as the Lilywhites were crowned SSE Airtricity Premier Division champions for 2014. A conclusive 2-0 victory over title rivals Cork City ended nineteen years of hurt for long suffering Dundalk fans as thousands spilled on to the pitch to acclaim Stephen Kenny and his players. In excess of 5,300 people were in Oriel Park on Friday evening to see if Dundalk could seal the deal and deliver a long awaited tenth title. Amongst the crowd were Dundalk legends Tom McNulty, Jim McLaughlin and Martin Lawlor as they came to see could a new generation of Dundalk players write their names into the clubs history books. The permutations were simple. Dundalk had to win. Any other result would see Cork
lift the title. Stephen Kenny was handed a boost before the game when captain Stephen O’Donnell passed a late fitness test enabling him to start his first game since he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament against Shamrock Rovers last April. Thanks to the addition of a temporary stand at the Carrick Road end the Dundalk players were cheered from all four sides of the ground as they made their way on to the pitch for battle. Although Dundalk had the majority of possession in the opening half they struggled to break down a resolute Cork defense and chances to test goalkeeper Mark McNulty were at a premium. As the half time whistle blew the tension around Oriel Park steadily increased with supporters aware that Dundalk had just 45 minutes left to claim that all-important goal.
And then came the moment that will live long in the memory for Dundalk fans. A Richie Towell lay off fell to the feet of captain Stephen O’Donnell and his rasping low shot found the corner of the net to send the Lilywhite army into raptures. Now it was Cork who needed a goal and they abandoned their ultra defensive shape as Dundalk looked to protect their precious lead. Fingernails were chewed and hearts started to flutter as Cork poured forward searching for that all important goal. A huge sigh of relief could be heard as Cork substitute Rob Lehane glanced his header inches wide of Peter Cherrie’s post. That proved to be Cork’s last chance and their title hopes were over two minutes later when Brian Gartland found the back of the net after a goalmouth scramble to all but seal a tenth title for Dundalk.
Triumphant Dundalk team celebrate the club's tenth league title
The roar that greeted the final whistle ten minutes later could probably be heard all around the town such was its volume. Supporters poured onto the pitch to greet their heroes and celebrate not only a title but also entry into next season’s Champions League. The turnaround in Dundalk FC’s fortunes have been nothing short of remarkable. Almost two years to the day the club were in Waterford fighting for their premier league survival in a relegation playoff. Throughout that season the club’s very existence had been threatened with mounting debts and poor attendances leaving them on the brink. The progress the club has made since those dark days has been nothing short of remarkable and Friday night’s triumph must go down as one of the most special evenings in the club’s rich history.
Stephen Kenny with Assistant Manager Vinny Perth.
By Paul Byrne When Stephen Kenny was unveiled as the new Dundalk manager in November 2012 he vowed to put his heart and soul into the club and awaken a sleeping giant. Less than two years later the man Dundalk fans now call King Kenny has delivered on that promise and then some. Friday evening’s victory over Cork City which sealed a remarkable league triumph for Dundalk has been rightly heralded as one of the finest managerial performances seen in the league. According to Stephen there are no secrets to his success with the most important aspect being to recruit good people. “We’ve really come a long way in a short space of time and to come second last year and win the league this year is an amazing achievement for all involved. When I took the job I was determined to surround myself with good people and thankfully every single person who has come into this club has worked so hard to help us achieve our goals and that’s why we are where we are today.” ,explained Stephen. “I would say the players are probably the fittest in the league and they are a credit to themselves for doing everything we’ve asked of them. We’ve pushed them hard but there has been no complaints and they’ve been brilliant all season” ,he added. The Dubliner burst onto the managerial scene fifteen years ago at the tender age of 27 guiding an unfashionable Longford side to promotion to the premier division, an FAI cup final and a place in the UEFA cup. Plenty more success followed as he won trophies with Bohs and Derry City before leading Scottish premier division side Dunfermline to a cup final. A short stint at Shamrock Rovers seen him lose his job after less than a year
in charge. The sacking was widely questioned with most observers thinking that Rovers had not given Kenny enough time. However Rovers loss proved to be Dundalk’s gain and last Friday night seen him reach the promised land for what he describes as maybe his best achievement to date. “Friday night was a really special night for everyone connected to the club and it was a truly special atmosphere. I thought our team handled the occasion brilliantly and controlled the game against a very good Cork side. “I think given the fact that we built a completely new squad and how far we’ve come so quickly I’d have to see this was the most special win in terms of any success I’ve had. We were fourth favourites for the league at the start of the season and we’ve won the league, the EA Sport’s Cup Final and got to the final of the Setanta Cup. Stephen O’Donnell was the only player who had won any silverware before this season and now we have a dressing room full of league champions. It really is fantastic.” ,enthused Stephen. Dundalk FC’s victorious team will take part in a parade on Saturday afternoon going through the town. The parade is expected to start at approximately 3.30pm from the Crowne Plaza up to Hill Street Bridge before going through the town on the way to the Square and Clanbrassil Street. Later that night, starting at 8pm, Dundalk FC will host the 2014 Player of the Year Awards. This event will be held in the Lisdoo. Tickets will be available from the Oriel Park office from Wednesday at 12pm and cost €15 each. There will be music, buffet and of course the presentation of the Dundalk FC annual awards.

Relay for Life is a huge success By Eunan Whyte Dundalk Relay For Life is back with a bang after a hugely successful event was staged at Dundalk Stadium over the Bank Holiday Weekend. According to Damien Higgins of the organising committee, the Relay was such a great occasion that they are already looking forward to next year, and he was full of praise of everyone involved. “I have to say that overall it was a rip-roaring success and the enthusiasm from everyone involved was just unbelievable. “We had a constant stream of people the whole time and everyone who attended seemed to enjoy themselves”, explained Damien, who was delighted with the new venue. “It was great to have a venue such as Dundalk Stadium and everyone said it was a fantastic event. The facilities were first class and we are delighted to say that we will be back next year. We have to thank Emma Meehan and her colleagues for all their help in making the Relay such a success”, he added. The only slight negative was the weather but as Damien explained, the switch to summer for next year’s event should help make the Relay even better. “I suppose you can’t depend on the weather at this time of

the year but next year we will be going on the June Bank Holiday so hopefully the conditions will be more favourable”, he continued and pointed out that the planning will start in the coming days. “The committee will meet next week to review the event and to see where we can improve for next year. “We are delighted to hear that some of the old teams are eager to get back involved so we hope to double the 13 teams that we had this year. I would say to anyone who is interested to give us a buzz because I am confident that with the excellent venue and the enthusiasm of teams, we will have one heck of a Relay in 2015”, he stated. Damien, who complimented the participants for their enthusiasm and the young people who provided the entertain-
ment throughout the night, also thanked the local business for their backing. “We have to say thanks to the businesses in Dundalk for their support as yet again the employers and the companies have been generous to a fault. They dug deep to get behind us and make sure it was a success. Dundalk Relay for Life has already raised €350,000 for the Irish Cancer Society and organisers will know next week how much has been raised over the weekend. As well as raising vital funds to support the Irish Cancer Society’s work, Relay for Life is held to increase cancer awareness, celebrate the lives of survivors, remember those who lost their lives to cancer, and to try and unite a community in the fight against cancer.

Driver claims he made an error of judgement
A man who admitted making an error of judgement in driving while over the limit was disqualified from driving for three years at Dundalk District Court. Conor McArdle of 5 Hazel Court, Bay Estate, Dundalk, was also fined €300 as a result of the incident on May 3 this year. Insp Martin Beggy
stated that on that date the defendant struck a parked vehicle at traffic lights before driving on a short distance. Gardai were called and Mr McArdle was identified as the driver. When he was searched at Dundalk Garda Station €20 worth of cannabis was discovered, while a breath sample showed he was over the limit for
driving. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his 26-year-old unemployed client was not in the practice of driving with drink but on this occasion had made an error of judgement. Judge Flann Brennan also imposed a €100 in relation to the charge of unlawful possession of drugs.

Man thought gun was legal in Ireland A man who thought he was entitled have an airsoft rifle in his home avoided a conviction when he appeared at Dundalk District Court. Piotr Kazmierczak of 4 College Heights, Hoey’s Lane, Dundalk, didn’t realise that he needed a licence because it was legal in other parts of Europe. Insp Martin Beggy stated that on March 6, 2013, as a result of information received they attended the defendant’s house in College Heights and were invited inside. They suspected he had a firearm and when questioned he admitted owning an airsoft rifle and
ammunition but had no licence. He surrendered the rifle to Gardai and stated that as they were legal on Poland and France he presumed they were legal in Ireland. The defence solicitor stated that the rifle is legal in Poland where he bought it and was told that it was legal throughout the EU. “He brought it through France in the boot of his car and at one stage he was stopped by police who saw the rifle but allowed him to continue”, stated the solicitor. “It was never used for anything other than target practice in his back garden which is fully secured, and fully co-operated with Gardai”, he added.
He stated that his 43-yearold client had been in Ireland since 2005 and was currently unemployed while his wife had passed away seven weeks ago. The defendant had never been to the attention of Gardai before and didn’t expect to be in court again. Insp Beggy stated that the penalty for the offence was a €2,000 fine and/or 12 months in prison, but he stated that there was no allegation that the weapon was being used. Judge Flann Brennan applied the Probation Act and dismissed the case, and ordered that the firearm be destroyed.

War on dog fouling Dundalk Tidy Towns latest project has seen them declare war on the ongoing problem of dog fouling by using an anti-dog fouling audio device to try and get the message through to dog owners. The project which began last March seen the Tidy Towns target 12 areas around Dundalk and analysing dog walking trends as well as installing anti-dog fouling audio devices to try and create awareness amongst dog walkers. According to Tidy Towns chairman Willie Duffy the six month project has seen significant improvements with regard to the amounts of dog fouling as well as an overall reduction of 68% in the twelve target areas. “Last March in association with the town parks department we commenced a project with the aim being to try and tackle the problem of dog fouling in our town. The project ran

for six months finishing up at the end of September. We targeted 12 areas around town and measured the amount of dog fouling before anti dog fouling audio devices were installed
and again after the devices were installed” , explained Willie. “The purpose of the audio device is to reinforce current messages through an innovative new method as well as
accelerate changes to behaviour regarding dog owners carrying foul bags and cleaning after their dogs. “The results of our six month project seen significant reductions in the amount of dog fouling in all 12 areas with an average reduction of 68% between all twelve areas. “This is obviously a fantastic result and it shows that the audio devices are getting the message across to people”, noted Willie. Some of the interesting findings from the six month report included the findings of the average dogs walked per hour on St Mary’s Road between March 27 and April 2. The report showed that 295 dogs and 1145 pedestrians walked through St Mary’s Road between those dates with 25.8% of all people walking a dog. The peak dog walking time was between 8am and 10am.

Outdoor gym opens By Paul Byrne Fitness enthusiasts were given a helping hand this month with the introduction of exercise equipment at the Navvy Bank and Riverside Walk in Dundalk. The initiative came about thanks to the joint efforts of Dundalk Tidy Towns and Louth County Council when money was made available by the Minister of the Environment for the project which will be free to use for anybody who wishes to keep in shape. According to Willie Duffy, chairman of Dundalk Tidy Towns the idea of the equipment is to give the people of Dundalk a chance to stay fit and healthy for free and to improve their quality of life. “We’ve had this idea in the pipeline for a while now and luckily for us we were informed by Louth County Council’s Frank Pentony that funds were available for the scheme through money made available from the Minister for the

We were determined to spend the money in Ireland and we ended up buying the equipment from a firm in Galway”, explained Willie. “We wanted to put the equipment into places where there is a big movement of people and
after talks with the council parks team we decided that the Navvy Bank and Riverside Walk were ideal locations. We felt that this was a project worth doing as we maintain all the time in Tidy Towns that our aim is to improve the quality of life for people in Dundalk. Hopefully people will use this equipment to get fit and stay healthy” noted Willie. The outdoor gym is
made up of a number of exercise machines, which are set on a tarmacadam surface and will offer users the opportunity to avail of different exercises targeting specific areas of the body. Each machine has an information plate attached outlining how the exercise is performed and are designed to be durable and virtually vandal proof.

Two men caused disturbance on train Two men who were involved in a disturbance on a train were given a chance to avoid a conviction after they made a contribution to charity. Jason Cahoon of 147 Summerhill, Banbridge, pleaded guilty to a public order charge when he appeared at Dundalk District Court. Insp Martin Beggy stated that on September 25 this year, Gardai were called to Clarke Station due to a disturbance on the Dublin-Belfast train. Mr Cahoon was asked to leave the train but refused to leave the station, while he was abusive to staff and intoxicated.
Judge Flann Brennan warned the defendant to keep the peace in future as he applied the Probation Act and dismissed the case after he agreed to make a contribution to the Court Poor Box. Eamon Loye of 21 Laurel Hill, Newry, Co Down, also pleaded guilty to a public order charge on the same day. The court was told that the defendant, who was drunk, became abusive to Gardai, was unruly and refused to leave the station. Judge Brennan warned him not to do anything like this again as he applied the Probation Act after a contribution was made to the Court Poor Box.

Dundalk U-9 host first blitz
Dundalk U9s hosted their first home blitz of the season, and the visitors to Mill Road were Westmanstown and Boyne. Each club had sufficient numbers to field two teams each, which led to a fantastic day of competitive rugby. Both teams from Dundalk put on a great show, in what turned out to be very close, hard fought games. Some wonderful attacking play in each game from Max Ward, Tomas Quinn, and Carl Meegan saw Dundalk score some brilliant tries. At the other end, there was ferocious tackling by David Crilly and Daira Thomas which saved what would have been certain scores for the

Christmas Parties
t is the time of year when people are beginning to make plans for their office Christmas party. For many it is one of the highlights of the year, but there can be some pitfalls. Here are some do’s and don’ts of office Christmas party etiquette aimed to keep your job, reputation and dignity in one piece. Do attend. Your office party is not an optional event. Even if you despise the thought of spending a whole evening with the people you work with every day, it’s a good idea to make an appearance. It shows that you are part of the team. Don’t dress inappropriately. And do dress professionally. The venue will determine the dress code so make sure you know what it is. According to workplace etiquette expert Pamela Holland,“Women are advised to stay away from slinky dresses, low-plunging necklines, shortshort skirts or tight-fitting trousers”. And, men “should refrain
from unbuttoning more than two buttons on their shirts and wearing overly fitted shirts that show off their muscles”. Do some schmoozing. This is a good time to talk to people you wouldn’t normally come across and, of course, the boss. This could help you in the long term in terms of forging alliances, helping to get things done or just raising your profile. But... ... Don’t talk shop. Do you want to be seen as the office bore? The office party gives you the chance to get to know people as people not just ‘Julie from accounts’. Do drink in moderation. Excessive drinking is the number one cause of office party ‘incidents’. Remember, it is a marathon not a sprint and it is likely that you will have a long evening ahead of you. But, by the time you realise this you may have already consumed enough alcohol to sink a battleship and not quite be with it. Stick to your limit, drink slowly or alternate between alcohol and water and, if it’s too late for that, then switch to soft
drinks and mince pies. And resist promotion. Above all, enjoy the party. the temptation to indulge in tequila shots or flaming drambuie Strive to be remembered for the or you may end up losing more right reasons and not for your than your inhibitions. Don’t make a move on a colleague. After a few hours and a few beers even Barbara from credit control can look like a goddess. But, before you make a bee-line for the person you’ve had your eye on all year, do yourself a favour, stay put and think, ‘Is this a good idea?’ ‘Probably not’, is the likely answer. Do watch your language. Remember the reason why you are at the Christmas party in the first place is because you have a job. Avoid saying things you wouldn’t say on a normal office day. Don’t leave too soon. Tequila slammers with the girls from HR may be more appealing than your department’s party. But, unless you have made a holy show of yourself, stay for at least a couple of hours even if it is the most boring party ever. After all, it’s your boss that you need to impress when it comes to getting a
lustful antics or David Brent dancing. And, in the words of the great man himself from “The Office”, when asked how he would
like to be remembered, he replied: “Simply, as, the man who put a smile on the face of all who he met.”

‘Homeless’ night worth the effort Mary part of delegation The sacrifice made by Dundalk Chamber President Paddy Matthews proved to be really worthwhile as he raised over €6,500 after sleeping under the stars in aid of homelessness. Paddy spent one of the worst nights of the year sleeping on cardboard and being lashed by the elements in Dublin’s Iveagh Gardens, and he is hoping to reach his target of €10,000 by Christmas. “The weather was brutal – there was no other word for it”, explained Paddy of the recent storm-lashed Focus Ireland Shine A Light Night, where he joined other business leaders in raising much-needed

funds for the charity. “The rain was lashing, the wind howling and the last thing that we wanted to do was leave the safety of the reception tent. “The ground was very soggy and the biggest issue was finding somewhere semi-firm to put down your cardboard. However, once that was sorted, the rain gradually eased off and we just
got the occasional soaking. “Your face and arms were exposed from the sleeping bag, and you just had to keep drying yourself off as best you could”, he added. “I got about an hour’s sleep although it’s not a sound sleep as you are conscious of everything around you. However, this is what people who are homeless have to go through.
“I had a bed to come home to the next day but the tragedy for these people is that there is little or no respite from these conditions. “I am extremely grateful for the people who have contributed so far and hope to hit a target of €10,000 by Christmas”, the Matthews.ie managing director continued. “Donations are open until Christmas and can be made at www.focusireland.ie in the sponsor a participant in the Shine A Light section. Alternatively, donations made out to Focus Ireland can be sent to Paddy at Matthews Coach Hire, Callenberg, Inniskeen, Co Monaghan.”
to honour Irish toops AS a member of the British Irish Parliamentary Assembly, Labour Senator Mary Moran visited Flanders on Tuesday to commemorate sacrifices made during the First World War. It was exactly 100 years ago to the day of the first battle of Ypres that we visited the area. ‘I am especially honoured to have participated in this trip to commemorate the sacrifices made during the First World War. We visited the grave of Major Willie Redmond and we had the opportunity to see the Island of Ireland Peace Park and Tower”, explained Mary.
Mary Moran travelled to Flanders
We also visited the war memorial, Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing and it was a very poignant and moving experience. Our visit
to Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest cemetery of Commonwealth soldiers graves’ of any war, was a staggering reminder of the loss of life.

Man had been off the wagon
A MAN who had given up drinking for a year found himself in trouble with the Gardai after falling off the wagon. Thomas McDonald of 11 Doolargy Ave, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to a public order charge when he appeared at Dundalk District Court. Gardai were called to a domestic incident at Doolargy Ave where they escorted the defendant off the property and he was asked to leave the area. He returned and was aggressive towards Gardai. Solictor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client – who had 42 previous convictions – hadn’t come to the notice of Gardai in the past year as he had given up drink. On this occasion he had fallen off the wagon. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €200 on the charge of intoxication in a public place.

Safety advice ahead of Halloween celebrations Louth County Council Fire & Rescue has issued an appeal in the run up to Halloween urging members of the public not to supply any waste material to persons who do not hold a valid waste collection permit. Louth Fire & Rescue Services incur substantial costs at Halloween in responding to bonfire related incidents, as well as cleaning up after bonfires that take place. The uncontrolled burning of waste, particularly in bonfires, is illegal under the Air Pollution Act, 1987, and The Waste Management Acts, 1996-2011. The burning of waste also releases toxic pollutants into the air which are known to be damaging to public health and the environment. “Bonfires are an illegal, dangerous and costly tradition”, explained Eamon Woulfe, Louth Chief Fire Officer. “Bonfires are often built close to houses and other property presenting risks to personal safety and property. Halloween is one the busiest times of the year for the fire services and responding to bonfire call outs puts a strain on existing resources. I would like people to be aware of the fire safety hazards that arise from illegal bonfires, where the burning of highly combustible materials may lead to serious injuries or death”, he stated. The Fire Service is advising members of public not to buy, use or supply fireworks. A firework includes all those devices which burn and explode to give a loud noise and a visual effect – basically a typical, traditional firework. Bangers are

also defined as fireworks. It is illegal to possess any fireworks that may have been legally purchased outside Ireland and brought back into this country. Many of the fireworks that are offered for sale illegally here have not passed any quality control tests and are possibly defective. Gardaí will confiscate any fireworks found in the possession of people who in turn will be liable to prosecution. In addition there is a specific offence under law for throwing any lit firework at a person or property. A person can be fined up to €10,000 for possession of unlicensed fireworks and for igniting, throwing, or possession of unlicensed fireworks with intent to sell or supply, the penalties can be up to €10,000 and five years in jail. The only exception to these laws is where a professional fireworks display is authorised under licence. According to Sheila Broderick, Louth Senior Assistant Chief Fire Officer: “Illegal fireworks may be manufactured without safety standards and can cause serious damage to users, particularly children. Parents should monitor their children and ensure they do not play with fireworks. Throughout the country, every year children end up tragically injured and often scarred for life, after using illegal fireworks.” Most fireworks related injuries are hand injuries and they tend to be caused by children lighting bangers/fireworks and then holding them for too long. Fireworks have been known to cause extensive damage to children’s eyes and hands.
Schools get into Halloween spirit
Sixth class students from Realt na Mara who raised €585 for Temple Street Children's Hospital.
By Paul Byrne
There was plenty of spooky Halloween fun and games in primary schools around town last week with all the children and even some of the teachers dressing up in scary Halloween costumes as they got ready for their mid-term break last Friday. Castletown Girls School was no place for the faint hearted with wolves, mummies, witches and ghosts roaming the corridors as pupils and teachers all took part in various games and activities to celebrate Halloween. In the Redeemer school, boys and girls had been up since the crack of dawn getting themselves ready judging by the excel-
lent costumes and face make up on display. Huge efforts were made by the association to ensure the children had a great day and the teachers in the Redeemer made sure to acknowledge the great work done by the committee. The very enjoyable event was attended by the all the children from the two schools. Teachers spoke highly of the preparation and help they received from the parents committee who supplied art work to decorate the room, making it the best spooky experience yet. The whole school community dressed up and thoroughly enjoyed the day’s activities which included story telling from Paul

Round two of the Fixx Coffee House Cyclocros League saw riders head to Tallaght’s Tymon Park for a challenging course of grass, tarmac, gravel and complete with a novelty “spiral” section, that caused spectators as much confusion as the riders. The dry conditions saw fast times for both the A and B races. In the A race, covering eight laps of the course, Cuchulainn had a very successful day. Leading the charge was Ray O`Shaughnessy coming home in fourth place behind two time Olympian Robin Seymour. Ray is continuing to build good form and should be a medal contender come January in the National Championships. Next Dundalk man home was Gary Shiels in 14th position, and also claiming the first Vet despite dropping a chain late on in the day. Johnny McCabe was 20th man home and claimed the first Supervet prize. Aiden McDonald was

close behind in 22nd, having dropped down the leader board after sustaining a puncture. Gerry McCabe was only slightly further back in 28th position. In the B race, consisting of seven laps, the final McCabe brother had a great day claiming seventh overall and first Supervet. Kenny Sullivan was 20th and Ray Fedigan made his cyclocross debut to come home in 60th position in
the field of over 90. Cuchulainn CC recently held their AGM in the Fairways Hotel. A good turn out saw the club discuss a number of initiatives for the year ahead as well as looking back over a successful 2014. The next event for the club is the traditional end of season awards night and Christmas party on Friday December 5 in the Spirit Store
DkIT connects to community
Dundalk Institute of Technology threw open their doors to the community sector on Thursday October 23 as they launched Community Connect @ DkIT. Edel Healy, Head of School of Health and Science, explained that the initiative is designed to see the college and the Regional Development Centre continue to create a clear way for the community and voluntary sector in the North East to tap in to the resources at DkIT. “DkIT has been a driving force for good in the North East for the last 40 years. We have played an active role in community life in cross-border projects, arts, sport, diversity, aging and life-long learning. But not everyone in the community knows how they can get involved with DkIT and access the resources that we have here. Community Connect @ DkIT aims to change this”, explained Edel. The launch event, called Community Connect @ DkIT: Engaging People, featured a seminar with a host of inspiring and experienced speakers from across the campus and the voluntary sector. Chair of Governing Body Andrew Griffiths talked about the importance of volunteering in all aspects of our society and how much the volunteer gets back from getting involved. President of the Student Volunteer Society, Rebecca Somers and lecturer, Anne-Marie McHugh delivered a brilliant joint speech on the opportunities that volunteering presents for students and staff. Edel explained the vision for what Community Connect @ DkIT will be and how it might evolve in the future. “We have research capacity, life-long learning opportunities and a large team of students and staff. We are already hugely involved in fundraising for the local community through college events and campaigns. But now we want community groups from right across the North East to talk to us about the challenges they face and how we might help.” Find out more about Community Connect at DkIT contact CommunityConnect@DkIT.ie.

Screamfest continues at Fairways Hotel Dundalk is set for a Halloween treat when Screamfest comes to the Fairways Hotel from October 24 to 31. The idea behind Screamfest is that Ireland has fallen to a zombie apocalypse and all uninfected citizens are advised to make their way to the last
remaining survivor’s camp. In order to do this you will have to find your way out of a 12,500sq ft maze with two metre high walls surrounding you. Escaping is easier said than done, however, with lots of wrong turns, dead ends and of course
zombies hunting you down. It will also be dark so all you will have to assist you is a small flashlight. When you enter the event you will be fitted with two pull tags around your waist, each tag represents a life, if the zombies pull one of your tags off you have lost a life, if the zombies pull the two tags of you have not
survived the zombie apocalypse! You will be allowed to complete the rest of the maze if you lose your tags though but you will not have survived. Suitable for adults and teenagers, there are also non-scary family events during the day. A promo video can be seen below with all further details at www.screamfest.ie

Getting Value from Your Tyres As you drive your kids to school or you are on the motorway in a hurry to make a meeting, all that is between you and the road is 4 tyres. At any one time the area of each tyre making contact with the road is approximatly the size of your hand. So this fact makes it one of the most important things about your car and the safety of you and your passengers. Did you know that on your average family car there are up to 40 moving parts on the front suspension and steering alone ? Any or all these parts will affect the way your tyres wear. Did you know that each wheel on your car rotates over 500 times for every klm travelled? As we are all to aware tyres like everything else have got very expensive, so it is all the more important that you get the maximum amount of wear as possible from them even if you are fitting second hand tyres. The most common problems with uneven tyre wear are: * Incorrect tyre pressure. * Incorrect wheel alignment * Incorrect wheel balancing Tyre Pressure. So How often do you check your tyre pressure? It is recommended to check at least once a month. The correct tyre pressure for you car is listed in the hand book or on the door
pillar or inside petrol/ diesel cap. Wheel Alignment ( tracking). How often should you get wheel alignment checked on your car? It is recommended to check at least once a year. There are several reasons why your wheels may need alignment apart from the uneven tyre wear which can be very visable. The steering may be pulling to one side, there may be worn or damaged steering/ suspension joints. Wheel alignment should be checked immediately after any steering/suspension parts are replaced. Wheel Balancing. How do you know if your wheels need balancing The most common tell tale sign of incorrect wheel balancing is a shake or vibration that comes trough the car at different speeds, you may feel it at 80klm and if you go faster it may seem

to disappear. This vibration from wheels that need balancing can increase ware and tear on your shocks and other componants on your car and you may end replacing parts that would other wise last a lot longer. How long should tyres last? The mileage /kilometers you get from your tyres can very much depend on how well you look after them. Its not uncommon for tyres to last less than 10,000 miles and not uncommon for tyres to last over 50,000,miles It has been proven that keeping all of the above mentioned in check will improve m.p.g. (km/L). The first item on your NCT report refers to side slip which is another term for tracking/wheel alignment. Safe driving. Tom McElarney, Dundalk Wheel Alignment Center, Coes Road Dundalk.

Blackstone Motors awarded Dealer of the Year 2014
The Hodson Bay Hotel in County Westmeath was the recent venue for the annual Renault and Dacia National Dealer Convention. A big part of the day’s activities is the Dealer Awards ceremony which promotes an individual dealer performance in a dedicated area. This year Blackstone Motors walked away with the National Aftersales Dealer of the Year Award. This award is for outstanding performance in Customer Service, Customer Retention, Service Department Operation and Parts Department Sales and Operation. “We are really delighted to win the National Aftersales Dealer of the Year Award. It’s probably the hardest category to win but we knew we had a great chance this year with the feedback we had received from our customers and the increase in business in this area in 2014. We would like to say a Big Thank You to all of our customers for their support over the past few years” commented Noel Stewart, Managing Director of Blackstone Motors. “We have a super Aftersales Team. Thomas and Fiona look after our customers from the Service Department side and Gerry is the man supporting our customers from the Parts Department side. We also have a team of Technicians that in my opinion are the best not just in the Renault & Dacia network but the

best in Ireland”. In 2011 Blackstone Motors relocated to its new premises in Newgrange Business Park on the Donore Road having spent three years as a Renault dealer on the Dublin Road. It’s this relocation to a modern facility with greater space that allowed the Blackstone Motors Team to concentrate their efforts on improving the Aftersales experience for their customers. “We have made some big investments in Aftersales over the past two years “explained Donal Waters, Director of Blackstone Motors. “We operate a Video Vehicle Health Check system within the service department and this
means our customers can view their vehicle by video link within our workshop while the essential checks during the service are being carried out. This brings our customer right into workshop area beside their car when it is in for routine service or repair; it allows the customer to see things on their car that they would never really ever see” In addition to this Blackstone Motors have invested in Aftersales IT and workshop facility equipment. When it comes to Renault or Dacia, Blackstone Motors is a one stop shop that now has an award winning Aftersales Department that will look after its customers second to none.
