There have been calls for an investigation after the back wheel fell off an ambulance at the Xerox junction in Dundalk last week. The ambulance was returning to base and was not carrying a patient at the time. The crew were not injured during the incident and went back on duty in another vehicle soon afterwards. The HSE spokesperson said “The National Ambulance Service has confirmed that an ambulance broke down this morning in Dundalk." “The ambulance has been removed from the scene and a technical investigation of the vehicle will be under-

taken to establish the cause of the incident.” However there have been calls for a wider inquiry. Seamus Kirk TD described the incident as a near miss as it “could have been en route to an emergency incident or carrying a seriously ill patient at the time.” He called on the Minister for Health, James Reilly, to ensure this incident is fully investigated and a report into this matter is published. “This is not the first time the ambulance service in the North East has come under the spotlight in recent months. Insp Martin Beggy stated that on October 9 last year, Gardai were made aware of a laptop that had been left at a computer repair shop after making enquiries discovered that it has been stolen the previous day. The computer was recovered and returned to its owner. Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated

that his client paid a little amount for the computer but that fact didn’t alert him. He was given a particular line of patter from the seller and thought he was the owner. “He took it to be repaired and it became apparent that it belonged to someone else. If he had thought there was a problem with authenticity, he might not have brought it to be repaired”, added Mr MacGuill. Scrambler motorbike collided with patrol car Two men who came to the attention of Gardai as a result of the use of a scrambler motorbike on a public road were spared a disqualification when they appeared at Dundalk District Court. The court heard that on February 23, 2011, Gardai were called to an incident in Cox’s Demesne, where they saw a youth on a scrambler motorbike with no helmet. He was observed overtaking vehicles close to a playground before performing a sweeping turn, crossing on to the wrong side of the road for a time before colliding with the patrol car as he tried to cross to a junction. Peter Heffernan of Sliabh Road, Hackballscross, was riding the motorbike and tried to run away before being apprehended. He

faced charges of having no crash helmet, two counts of dangerous driving, having no licence, no insurance and no tax, as well as failing to remain at the scene. Martin Duffy of 570 Ashling Park, Cox’s Demesne, Dundalk, arrived on the scene and attempted to take the bike which he claimed he owned. He refused to leave the scene when directed by Gardai. Mr Duffy faced charges of failing to comply with the direction of Gardai, having no insurance, no tax along with having no front or back identification marks. Conor MacGuill stated that the incident took place over three years ago when Mr Heffernan was 17 but he had matured since then. “It was a youthful endeavour that he doesn’t intend to repeat. He attracted the attentionof the Gardai

and didn’t behave appropriately. He has matured since then and is now in a stable relationship with a two-year-old child, and after completing a college course he is now looking for work”, explained Mr MacGuill. In relation to Mr Duffy, the solicitor stated that the scrambler was not intended for use on the road so it couldn’t be insured. As a result he has suffered the loss of the bike. Neither man had any previous convictions. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €100 fine on Martin Duffy and stated that he wouldn’t disqualify due to his youth at the time. Peter Heffernan was fined €100 for careless driving and failing to give appropriate information, with other matters taken into consideration.

Sarah has adventure to remember Sarah Lawrence, aged nine is a member of Buíon Setanta Cub Scouts, who has written an article on her recent trip to Dublin. I first joined the Scouts in September 2013. Since then I have enjoyed lots of exciting trips like canoeing, sleepovers etc. Last Wednesday February 19 was to be the most exciting field trip so far as we were going to visit the Aerodrome in Baldonnell Dublin. The Aerodrome is the home of the aircorps which is the aircraft division of the Irish army. I had to get up early. I woke up at 7am, I was full of excitement not knowing what this magical day would bring. I had butterflies in my tummy. One thing I knew it was going to be an adventure of a lifetime. It was a fresh crispy morning and the birds were chirping ‘tweet tweet’. I had a packed lunch with a flask of tea. I had lots of warm clothes and raingear so I would be toasty warm. I met my friends at the Scout Den and we boarded the bus to Dublin. We arrived at the Aerodrome and our tour began. We saw some men from the Army and they spoke about the history of the Aerodrome. Titanium Racing hoping to be in pole position for national competition Five TY students from Coláste Rís Secondary School are living life in the fast lane as they aim to qualify for a national schools technology competition. Members of Titanium Racing are hoping to earn a place in the final of the Irish final of the F1 in Schools Technology Challenge and they are currently on their final lap of preparations for the regional finals which will take place in Griffith College Dublin on the March 14. Rory Meehan, Mícheál Lambert, Brandon Muzira, Malchi Quinn and Rhys Shields make up the team that will be judged on, design of the car, the originality of the design, how they present their portfolio, how their pit display looks, use of social media and how much sponsorship they raise.

experience thus far on the Voice Brendan says he has had so many laughs and although it has been somewhat of a surreal experience at times he is loving it. “When I first applied I just thought I’d go for it and see how I’d get on but not expecting much out of it really. But the feedback has been unbelievable. I’ve probably got more exposure from singing for two minutes in last week’s show than I have got in over twenty years gigging all over the place. You are mindful that there are 700,000 people watching you but that kinda adds to the excitement”, said Brendan.

Dundalk’s St. Patricks Day parade this year will be covered by RTÉ due to the town’s involvement in the international bicycle race Giro d’Italia. The race, which will pass through Dundalk on May 11, is putting the town in the world’s spotlight as an estimated global audience of up to 755 million people watch the race live on television.

As the excitement for the “fight for pink” builds, Dundalk is getting into the Giro spirit with this year’s parade theme dubbed Giro d’Dun Dealgan. The town will be dressed in pink for the event in May but St Patrick’s weekend will have a definite Giro feel as Cuchulainn Cycling Club take part in the parade along with a vintage bike display in Market Square

Students in top 100 code-breakers

Students from St. Louis recently participated in the first round of the All-Ireland Linguistics Olympiad 2014. The competition involves students pitting their code-breaking skills against some of the world’s toughest linguistic challenges.

The top 100 performers in the qualifying round progress to the national final, which will be held in Trinity College on March 25. St. Louis is very proud that two students, Sinéad Dullaghan (6th year) and Sadhbh Murphy (5th year) have qualified for the final. They will participate in a day of problem-solving, testing their skills in logic, language and linguistics. The winners of the final will represent Ireland at the International Linguistics Olympiad in Bejing, China in July.

Leprechaun world record

One of the nation’s favorite events is aiming to break the world record for the greatest number of people gathered as leprechauns at the National Leprechaun Hunt in Carlingford on Sunday March 30 at 2pm. The event that has captured the nation’s imagination since the official designation of Slieve Foy Mountain in Co Louth as an EU Special Protection Area for Little People in 2009. Exactly 25 years ago, the suit and bones of a leprechaun were found on The Slieve Foy Mountain by the late local business man, PJ O Hare. This sparked the original Leprechaun Hunt which was held on the Easter Sunday of 1989, attracting 4,000 visitors to the beautiful region of Carlingford.. On the day of the hunt, 100 ceramic leprechauns are hidden on Slieve Foy mountain, with a total cash amount of €2000 beneath them. However, people that may come across a real leprechaun are requested not to try to capture them. “This is about more than breaking a world record’ Frances Taylor, event co-ordinator said. Only carriers of authenticated licenses will be allowed on the mountain that day and prospecting licenses are sold at €6 per person with registration beginning at 1pm at the Village Green Carlingford. Great action continues in Dundalk Darts league The Dundalk and District darts league has reached various milestones within the fixture list, the second round of fixtures has been completed and a number of shock results were marked down on the cards. The favourites in all three leagues suffered upsets and the standard of darts has continued to improve. Paul Curran for the Punters Sharks emulated the PDC players by producing a 15 darts leg Ciaran Crawley of Fergusons had a 16 dart leg while Niall Hinchey from the commercial Club seems to hit a 180 in every game. The Divisional Cup semi finals were held at the end of the second round of league fixtures and it was ensured that a neutral venue was to host all semi finals , Kehoes of Quay street was the host for the Premier league and with the Stags Head having three teams in the semi final. They were definitely going to have one team in the final at least. The final result on the night saw them get two teams into the final with “The Stags” beating the Commercial 1896 team while the Stags red were

just pipped to the post by Stags Black who had team captain Andy Mackin to thank for a last leg victory. The First Division saw last year’s Cup winners Avenue Celtic suffer a heavy defeat to Courtneys while Harrys Bar were too strong for the Punters Dragons these semi finals were all played in the Stags Head. The Commercial Club was the venue for the Second Division semi finals and it saw Stags White play Castle Bar Knights and yet again a Stags head team came out victorious and in a very hard fought game Johnny Masons came out on top in a ding dong battle against Fergusons of Gyles Quay. The return of Round three of the league saw Jackie Murphy’s gain there first win over Stags Red, Commercial Hawks piled the pain onto Fergusons by beating them 4-2. Stole two trays of meat

A woman who stole two trays of meat from a shop was convicted and fined €100 at Dundalk District Court. Deborah McDonagh of 26 Cooley Park, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to the offence on February 10 this year at McArdle Meats in the Marshes Shopping Centre. After taking the meat, valued at €10 each, from the fridge, the defendant left without paying but after being apprehended she admitted the offence. Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that his 30-year-old client apologised and was aware of the fact that she had been in court before when she was given a chance. He added that she had no explanation for this offence. In convicting Ms McDonagh, Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €100 fine.

Sold alcohol to juvenile

A shop owner who admitted an offence of selling alcohol to a person under 18 has agreed to pay €2,000 to a charity. Ailish Rocks of 1 Rathmount, Seafield Road, Blackrock pleaded guilty to the offence which took place at Londis, Castletown Road on April 12, 2012. On that date, Gardai carried out a test purchase on the shop where they observed a 16-year-old purchase four cans of beer valued at €5. He was not asked for identification. Solicitor, Roger McGinley, stated that Ms Rocks was not on the premises at the time and that the employee who made the sale was preoccupied with a medical diagnosis that had been given that day. Mr McGinely stated that the employee admitted that she should have asked for identification and pointed out that it is an offence that galls Ms Rocks. Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case to March 13 for €2,000 to be paid to charity.

Indeed it was a clean sweep for the Dundalk club in the Colour Print Open section as David Martin picked up silver for his image ‘Blackrock Boat’ while Gabriel O’Shaugnessy picked up bronze for his beautifully captured image entitled ‘Golden Apple’. No memory of late night incident

A man who had no memory of a late night incident in which he broke into a car was fined €100 at Dundalk District Court and ordered to pay €200 compensation. Eugene Myles of George Bernard’s Flat, Flat 2, Clanbrassil St, pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal damage at St Nicholas Ave on October 14, 2012. The court heard that the defendant and another man damaged the door while getting into the car but escaped when confronted. Mr Myles was identified by the injured party’s son. Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, stated that his client, who has 101 previous convictions, had previously been well known to the court due to a series of addictions. However, since he had received a six month suspended sentence he had been clean for the most part. Mr MacGuill added that the defendant didn’t recall the incident but accepts that he was present. He apologised to the owner and ex-pressed his desire to pay compensation.

The Jonesborough Juggernaut training exercise

A major cross border training exercise aiming to test the responses of emergency services to a rail crash took place recently in Jonesborough, Co Armagh. The exercise, called the Jonesborough Juggernaut, involved a staged collision on the railway line where a car crashes through a fence, onto the rail line, is hit by a train and pushed off the flyover onto the underpass into the path of oncoming traffic. Simulated fires on board the train combined with diesel leaking into a stream further intensified the difficulty for the various agencies responding to the mock up major incident as they dealt with multiple fatalities and doz-

ens of causalities. “Major emergency incidents on the railways, are thankfully quite rare, but can have serious consequences with generally large numbers of casualties if not fatalities involved. Preparing and training together for such incidents is essential and builds upon the ongoing co-operation and training,” said Chris Kerr, Chief Fire Officer, Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS). The various agencies involved picked up a number of learning points and described the exercise as extremely valuable; ultimately enhancing the emergency response to serious incidents.

Sinn Féin have announced that a second candidate has been selected to run for the Ardee electoral area in May’s Local Government Elections to be held in May this year. The selection was held on Tuesday evening in Dunleer where Clogherhead man Tom Cunningham was put forward as running mate to long standing Councillor Pearse McGeough. Tom was a member of RNLI for about 20 years and is now involved in coaching young people in football for the Dreadnots GFC having been a former player himself. His uncle and grandfather, both called Pat Carr, were past mayors of Drogheda so there is an established political tradition in Tom’s family. On an annual basis, Tom Cunningham, along with Drogheda Councillor Imelda Munster, organises the beach clean-up at The Little Strand Beach with the Clogherhead Scouts and Beavers. Tom has a deep concern for the environment.

Dundalk Karate recently attended an IKFC Junior Lefevre Camp in Clondalkin, Dublin. Junior Lefevre is not only a European Champion but a World Champion and it was an opportunity not to be missed by anyone within Karate. Sensei Mary Marcus was thrilled that so many members from Dundalk Karate attended this event and even though this event was held over two days with each age and grade category catered for, it was an experience that nobody will soon forget. A man was warned that he must abandon the life he was living in order to avoid finding himself in further trouble. Paul Nesbitt of 49 Park St, Dundalk, was given the warning by Judge Flann Brennan, after being sentenced to three months for burglary. Insp Martin Beggy stated that on August 13 a window was broken at a premises on Park St, Dundalk, and a laptop valued at €1,000 was stolen along with cash valued at €100. When CCTV was

viewed, the defendant was identified along with another man who has since died. Mr Nesbitt had denied the charge when interviewed, but pleaded guilty in court. His solicitor stated that the 35-year-old father of two is currently serving a ninemonth sentence and is due for release on August 8. He previously had a solid work history and was a championship boxer before he started committing offences. He added that the defendant had been greatly affected by

bereavements over Christmas and has attended counselling for his alcohol addiction. Judge Flann Brennan stated that he would not extend his period in custody as he imposed a threemonth sentence, and warned the defendant to change his ways. “You know what you have to do - you have to abandon the life you were living. That may be easy for me to say but you have to do it or this will keep recurring. You have got to stop it”, added the judge.

Confidence is growing in the motor industry with new car sales up in Co Louth by 30% from the same period last year. Figures released by SIMI the Society of the Irish Motor Industry indicate that after many years of falling sale this might be the year to see a swing in an upward direction. So far this year there has been about 859 new car sales in Co Louth, which is more than half of last year’s total for the year when 1482 cars were sold. Industry experts say that this hints at a change in not only the motor industry but also in wider fortunes.

It depends on where the line is with regards to the strength of the slap. I’d probably agree with a gentle slap if the occasion merited it but I would never agree with hurting a child.

No I disagree with that view, I think it is ok to smack them if they do something bold as it teaches them the difference between right or wrong. There is no problem with a gentle slap.

Well obviously I would never agree with beating a child or being violent towards them in any form but a gentle smack is ok in the right circumstances. A child should never be afraid of being a child.

Yes, I think they are right. It is never fair to smack a small child who don’t know what they are doing and can’t defend themselves.

I don’t think you should ever smack small children. Maybe if they are a bit older and understand why they are getting smacked it might be ok but definitely not younger kids.

Forum plays a vital role and looks after needs of older people

The Louth Older People’s Forum has played a vital role in making Louth the premier age friendly county in Ireland, its AGM has heard. From restructuring the county’s bus service to combatting loneliness and improving age friendly business services, the forum has established the needs of the county’s older people and delivered real and lasting change. Ann Ward has been elected chair of the forum for the second time, after receiving glowing praise at its recent AGM for the stellar progress made over the past two years. “Louth has led the way in Ireland because it puts the older person at the centre of decisionmaking and service delivery – and the Louth Older People’s Forum has been one of the main driving forces behind that,” said Mary Deery, Louth Age Friendly County Co-Ordinator. The forum consists of older people’s groups,

advocacy groups, nursing homes, day care centres, community stakeholders and individuals and meets on a monthly basis. Vice Chairperson Kath Briggs and Secretary Michael McCoy will join Ann on the new committee, which will serve a two-year term. On a local level, one of the great triumphs of the forum over the past two years has been the dawning of a new era for bus commuters looking to use Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. The forum recently also carried out a comprehensive Age Friendly survey of the needs of older people in County Louth and made a submission to Louth County Council planning office on the development of the Louth Retail Strategy. The county has also hosted two annual Age Friendly Business and Consumer Fairs at Darver Castle in October – each attracting crowds of over 3,000.

Ardee was also recently awarded the status of Ireland’s first Age Friendly Town and is now being used as an exemplar for 16 other towns in the country. “The Louth Older People’s Forum has earned respect and trust because its constitution and services were designed by the members,” said Ann. “The Forum has led to person-centred services such as the Cultacha older people’s advocacy service, the Nestling Project, the Parlour, Men’s Sheds in Dundalk, Drogheda and Cooley and Good Morning Call Services in Dundalk and Drogheda. “We have also established a GAA social initiative, a volunteer day centre, care and repair programmes, befriending services and much more”, she added.

Matthew claims bronze MAS-F took a small but dedicated team to this year’s Irish Open which saw over 3,300 competitors from over 36 countries compete for the world class titles. With the highest standard ever seen at competition, few were lucky enough to make it through to the podium but 13-year-old Matthew McQuillan succeeded in doing just that. After a gruelling quarter-final against his Dutch opponent that went to overtime, Matthew secured his place in the semi-finals. Local schools compete in sportshall athletics at DkIT PUPILS from St. Joseph’s, Bay Estate, CBS Primary, St. Nicholas Boys School and Castletown Girls school competed in the third annual Louth Sportshall Athletics event. The event was held in the MPC in DKIT on Friday March 7. Sportshall Athletics is indoor athletics for children. It is an enjoyable method of developing fundamental sports skills and fitness during cold

winter months and an age appropriate pathway into mainstream participation. The programme is a Louth Sports Partnership initiative which has been set up and organised by Tríona Faapito, Sports Coordinator Dundalk Sports Centre in conjunction with DKIT. The extravaganza is the first of its type since the merger of Louth and Meath VEC. “Both VECs were known for the promotion of the Arts – in particular their support of musical events,” said Peter Kierans, Chief Executive with LMETB. BMW announce details of new X4

Volkswagen e-Golf Power

The e-Golf is powered by an AC electric motor (85 kW / 115 PS, and 270 Nm) with no tailpipe emissions. Acceleration from 0-100kph (62mph) takes 10.4 seconds which compares favourably to the diesel Bluemotion Golf ’s 10.5 seconds. The top speed is 140kph(87mph) with a range of around 118 miles per charge, depending on driving style, charge level and ambient conditions. It is possible to opt for a heat pump which in the winter months can take heat from the air and vehicle’s drive systems to increase the range by around 20 per cent. In addition to the standard driving mode, there are two economy modes, ‘Eco’ and ‘Eco+’. ‘Eco’ cuts peak power to 70 kW / 95 PS, reduces the output of the air conditioning system and modifies the accelerator response. Top speed is cut to 119kph(74mph) and 0-100kph(62mph) takes 12.1 seconds. ‘Eco+’ limits maximum power to 55 kW / 75 PS, torque to 175 Nm, and top speed to 90kph (56mph), while the accelerator response is modified and the air conditioning disabled. In either mode, full performance can be accessed by kicking down on the accelerator pedal. The e-Golf can be re-charged via a normal domestic socket which takes around 13 hours, if you opt for a dedicated Wallbox charging socket a 3.6 kW supply can recharge a flat battery in eight hours. The 26.5 kWh lithium-ion battery is integrated into the Golf ’s floor so that the boot remains useable. A DC charging point as found in many major cities can recharge the battery (at levels of up to 40 kW) to 80 per cent capacity in just 35 minutes. The e-Golf is based on the trim of the SE model and is only available as a five-door model – in addition to the SE core spec, you gain 2Zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, e-specific ‘Tilleves’ alloy wheels and Discover Pro satellite navigation, with an eight-inch colour touchscreen. For the e-Golf the Discover Pro system includes added functionality including a range display, and the option to pre-programme the vehicle’s heating or cooling systems.

Based on the platform of the current X3 the X4 takes its styling cues from its bigger brother the X6. It is 14mm longer than the X3 and 36mm lower with the front seat occupants 20mm lower and the rear some 28mm lower than those in X3. There is a bench seat in rear, so that the X4 can accoomdate five. The rear seat splits on a 40:20:40 is reveal a boot that can carry between 500 and 1400 litres. From launch there will be a choice of three diesel engines, the xDrive20d a 2.0 litre unit producing 190 hp /

400Nm of torque. This equates to 0-100kph(62mph) time of 8 seconds via its standard six-speed manual gearbox, you can opt for an eight-speed automatic. With the auto fuel consumption on the combined cycle is 5.2L/100km(54.3mpg) and CO2 emissions 138 g/km. There is the 3.0 litre

BMW X4 xDrive30d which is equipped with an eight-speed automatic gearbox which produced 258hp / 560Nm and will cover the 0-100kph(62mph benchmark in 5.8 seconds. The fuel consumption is 5.9L/100km(47.9mpg) and CO2 emissions 56 g/ km. The range topping BMW X4 xDrive35d is

powered by a 3.0-litre diesel producing 313hp / 630 Nm, this is even fitted with launch control to command a 0-100kph (62mph) time of 5.2 seconds with a top speed of 246kph(153mph). Fuel consumption on the combined cycle is recored at 6 L / 1 0 0 k m ( 4 7 . 1 mp g ) and CO2 emissions are 157 g/km. Auto Start- Stop, Brake Energy Regeneration and on-demand operation of the ancillary units are standard across the range. Optionally available are 17-inch aero wheels with reduced-rolling-resistance

tyres, which reduce the CO2 emissions of the BMW X4 xDrive20d and xDrive30d by a further 7g/km. The X4’s core equipment comprises an electrically power opening tailgate, variable Sport Steering, 18-inch lightalloy wheels, front and rear Park Distance Control, Performance Control and Xenon headlights. The interior features 40:20:40 splitfolding rear seats, a Sport leather steering wheel, Heated front seats and BMW Business Media package are all standard. You can upgrade to

the xLine trim level which will add 18-inch light-alloy wheel, Satin Aluminium exterior trim, Dark Copper interior trim, Sport seats and exclusive xLine leather upholstery. The top line spec is the M Sport model which comes with M Aerodynamic bodystyling, High-gloss Shadow Line trim exterior trim and 19-inch M Sport light-alloy wheels plus M Sport suspension. There are BMW M door sill finishers, Sport seats and an Aluminium Hexagon interior trim add the finishing touches.
