LOUTH County Council may end up paying €75 million for boom time land purchases that have since been rendered unsuitable for such development. The news of the repayments burden was revealed at Louth County Council meeting this week, where Louth County Manager Philomenia Poole told the council that repayments of about €3million per year for the next 25 years may have to commence soon. The repayments relate to Government loans for land acquisitions at the height of the market when policy required local authorities to ensure that they were adequately prepared for coming

housing needs. There was a seven year stay on interest repayments that is coming to an end on some of the properties. A further extension of the moratorium on interest charges is not available and in the absence of the previous capital housing loans, the local authorities are now facing meeting loan repayments over the coming years from the local authority budget. In Louth, land in Kilcurry, and around Dundalk and Drogheda was purchased over a number of years to build social housing. In some cases not even foundations were laid as some of the land was not zoned for residential building Continued on page 12

Shock and anger over waste of money The news that almost €200,000 of tax payers’ money would be spent ‘fixing’ the Market Square and Stapleton Place has shocked and angered a local representative. Cllr Jennifer Green was reacting to the news that huge sums of money will be spent to complete work at the Market Square and Stapleton Place. Additional works resulting from Stage 3 safety audit, which is carried out at the completion of the project, cost €119,730 plus VAT. The provision of pedestrian signals at

the Market Square cost €118,771 plus VAT and the cost of ‘fixing’ Stapleton Place cost €44,730 plus VAT. Cllr Green said that “proper public consultation is essential and I don’t just mean that a project goes on public consultation for 8 weeks and then people can submit their proposals. I mean that various groups, shops, citizens in the area that are going to be affected by these works should be brought into the council and have meetings with the engineers. At the end of the day it’s the people in the area who know

Jennifer Green on Stapleton Place

the area the best.” The Sinn Féin Councillor continued “In regards to Stapleton Place, the threshold for public consultation is roughly €125,000 and because

the works coming in was under that amount, there was no public consultation process. However, because of this, mistakes were made. If you add the current €45,000+ to

fix the problems, in fact it would have come over that threshold, so a public consultation should have taken place.” Sinn Féin believe that there should be no

thresholds and that public consultations are vital in any works that are happening in an area. “I firmly believe that if proper public consultations had occurred in

Stapleton Place that the beautiful trees would still be there and we would have worked the cycle lanes in a way that works for all. I’m disgusted that those beautiful mature trees had to be cut down and all of this could have been avoided”. Concluding, Councillor Green said “there are questions to be asked and I am talking to my colleagues in the party to decide what the best way forward is so this does not happen again. No-one in this country seems to be held accountable for wasting tax payers money and that needs to be addressed at all levels.”

Good Samaritans step in to save dog By Niamh Kirk

The fastest and most economical way to get to the heart of Dublin

“It’s a dog life” or so the saying goes, but not for all as last week group of local women stepped in to pay for the life saving treatment of a stray dog after it was hit by a car. The dog , who had a navy and orange canvas tie around its neck, appears to have broken free and was seen running around Dundalk earlier that day. When residents on Anne St heard an almighty thud from outside they rushed only to discover that a car had collided with a large dog. Both the driver and dog left the scene, but one resident had a feeling that the dog was likely to have sustained considerable damage given how loud the collision had been. She went searching and found the animal lying on the road in the train station in too much pain to move. With the help of some passers-by and a local vet the dog was moved to the clinic. When the vet inspected the dog, they found a shattered leg and without surgery to fix it, the dog would have to be put down. Left with a difficult choice the woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said that she could not let the dog suffer. “I could not have that on my conscience let the animal suffer, so I agreed to pay for the dog’s treatment. I couldn’t let him die”, she said. After a major surgery where bolts

The injured dog is on the mend

were attached to his leg to help the shattered bone heal, Buddy was takenin by his saviour. However, one good deed begets another and as word spread of the dog’s rescue a number of women decided to pitch in to help pay for the dogs expensive treatment. From close friends to women she had never met, the dogs treatment was crowd sourced from kind-hearted people in Dundalk. But there remained one problem, no one was in a position to keep the animal. Now well on the road to recovery, Buddy is being fostered by a vet but needs a more secure home, either his own or a new family that would welcome a happy, friendly, outdoor dog. “I’d love to keep him but I already have a dog who is not all too happy about the new visitor. He has a fabulous nature, he likes ‘giving the paw’ and is very friendly, he loves a little attention and for you to just sit with him,” she said.

aged in their late 20s were arrested at the scene and taken in to Dundalk Garda Station for questioning. All three males were detained under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939, at Dundalk Garda Station but were released without charge sometime later. Gardai say enquiries are ongoing.

Former Dundalk resident went on the drink during holiday A former Dundalk resident who ‘went on the drink’ after returning for a holiday to visit friends went had no recollection about how he ended up in somebody’s house in the early hours of the morning. Tadas Lapas, of no fixed abode, who had moved to Germany with his partner, pleaded guilty to burglary and possession of certain articles at

Dundalk District Court as the result of the incident on December 11 last year. Insp Martin Beggy stated that on that date Gardai were called to a house in Belfry Gardens at 5.50am where the suspect was being restrained by the occupant. They found a jacket outside which belonged to the defendant and it contained lock picks.

Solicitor Sean T O’Reilly explained that his client had come to Dundalk for a short holiday. “He met up with some friends and they went on the drink. He then found himself in this situation with little recollection of how it happened. “He realises that people were traumatised by his actions and he is apologetic”, explained

Mr O’Reilly. The court heard that the partner of Mr Lapas is currently serving a sentence and is due for release in July having been in custody since December 18. It was stated that when he is released he will be returning to Berlin where his partner is due to give birth. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a one-month sentence.

Stop drinking or face prison sentence A man was told to stop drinking or face the prospect of serving a prison sentence in relation to a series of motoring offences. Sean Kiernan, with an address at 10 Ashwood Road, Clondalkin, Dublin 12, was told by Judge Flann Brennan that he would review the matter on July 16 but warned the defendant that he needed to address his issues. “If nothing untoward happens between now and then – and I include drinking of any sort – I will find a way of dealing with this other than

a custodial sentence. It goes without saying that if there is any problem of that sort, I will have no option but to impose a custodial sentence. “You have to address these difficulties but my duty is to ensure you don’t endanger people”, explained the Judge. The case at Dundalk District Court arose out of an incident on June 1 last year when the defendant was stopped by Gardai at Heynestown after being observed driving in an erratic manner. When he was taken to Dun-

dalk Garda Station he failed to provide a breath specimen, stating that he had a chest complaint. He subsequently provided a urine sample. After giving two different names, Gardai later discovered his real identity. The defendant’s solicitor revealed that his 41-year-old client had ongoing problems with alcohol addiction. “This can’t be described as a moment of madness, but is a long period of madness”, he stated, pointing out that the 41-year-old accountant had seen his marriage break-up,

although he is still the breadwinner for his two children. He added that Mr Kiernan has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and is attending AA, while his employer is very supportive of him. He realises that he is in danger of losing his job the way he has been behaving. He pointed out that the defendant is trying to turn his life around, and although he acknowledged that Mr Kiernan was under two disqualifications at the time, he asked the judge not to impose a custodial sentence.

der the clubs coaches. The association with Dundalk Cricket Club came about through two of the schools teachers the cricketing sisters Deborah and Louise Challoner who are members of Dundalk Cricket Club and regularly turn out for the club’s second XI in the Leinster League. Progress has been good in the team and they have now come to the attention of the sports governing body Cricket Ireland who on Thursday 13th March sent down their Leinster development officer Brian O’Rourke to take a look. This visit has been crucial to the de-

velopment of the side and although they have only been practising for a few months Brian noted that they are certainly up to the standard of other school sides in Leinster, in a move to further progress their development the team will be taken in the near future for their first outdoor training session by Brian O’Rourke at the King’s Hospital, this will be a two hour hard ball session and game on the same day. The work being done in St Vincents is an important addition to the cricket scene Dundalk and it is hoped it will in time prove to be a springboard for youth cricket in the town.

Historic day for new school Colaiste Chu Chulainn has hosted its first welcome day for incoming first year students. Meeting for the first time, sixth class pupils from schools across Dundalk met the new Principle Uí Liatháin and members of the teaching team at a special event in Chapel Street campus where the school will be based until the state of the art campus at the Marshes is finished. Children took part in an assessment while parents took the chance to meet one another and their children’s future teachers. “Today marks the first of many historic days to come for the students and teachers of Coláiste Chú Chulainn,” said Bn

Uí Liatháin, “It is a very exciting time for all. We come together today as a school community for the very first time and we will journey with these students as they grow and develop towards the school’s first ever graduating class in 2020 and beyond.” “There was a great sense of pride as students fulfilled their first activities as students of Coláiste Chú Chulainn and great excitement as they spoke about new adventures to come,” she added. Once completed Coliaste Chu Chulainn will be one of the country’s most modern schools boasting state of the art facilities. With a €15 million budget it will be

equipped with the best educational facilities into the school building and curriculum. A 15% jump in the number of second-level students is expected in the next five years and the opening of the Coliaste Chu Chulainn, along with extensions and developments in existing schools should help accomodate the rising school-age population. However it is unlikely to be the last major development in the area as the population of primary level students is set to swell to twice that of second level in the same period presenting similar challenges when it comes time for them to enter the second level.

Last week the situation in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital was so desperate that the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (IMNO) called for a major disaster plan to be implemented. There were 57 patients waiting on trollies in the Drogheda Hospital on Tuesday morning with the IMNO describing it as dangerous levels of overcrowding. The situation was so dire that the IMNO advised that the Hospital go off call for at least 24 hours meaning that a person in North Louth who needed emergency treatment would have had to pass through Dundalk and Drogheda before getting to Navan Hospital A&E to get treatment. “The situation is extremely dangerous for patients and staff and the INMO is calling for the hospital to be taken off call immediately. Staff are deeply distressed at the level of overcrowding especially as trolleys are now overflowing to the adjoining corridors. They are concerned for the wellbeing of patients and their colleagues as they endeavour to provide safe care to patients,” said Tony Fitzpatrick the IMNO Industrial Relations Officer. While the Drogheda hospital

was coping with the equivalent of two full wards are waiting for admission in the Emergency Department, there were 46 staffed beds in the Louth County Hospital empty on the same day. In total 28 beds were free it the step-down ward and 18 in the Stroke Rehab Ward, all staffed, with the former male medical ward lying idle. Only two patients had been transferred from Lourdes to Louth by 6.30pm on Tuesday evening, which were put into the Day Services Unit which is usually reserved for those recovering from elective surgery. The following day six more patients were moved into the Louth Hospital also. “An urgent review is required of bed capacity within the Louth/ Meath Hospital Group and the availability of beds in the community. Also there is a requirement for additional community nursing resources in the area to assist in the discharge of patients from hospital,” said Mr Fitzpatrick. Louth Councillor and Hospital Campaigner, Tomas Sharkey said “This latest crisis proves that the LCH capacity is essential to the efficient running of the regions health service. The wards and

A&E should never have been closed. We want permanent staff recruited to send a clear message that this is not an ad hoc, temporary arrangement. We see this as an opportunity to replace some of the dominoes that were toppled in our hospital over the years.” A HSE spokesperson said that staff are working with senior clinicians to utilise all resources effectively. “This means that the most critically ill patients are prioritised for treatment and available beds. As a result some patients may experience delays in being seen and where necessary admitted; patients attending with minor injuries will experience longer wait times in the Department,” they said. The HSE also advises the Minor Injuries Unit at Louth County Hospital Dundalk is open from 9am to 8pm daily and is a suitable service for those who have a minor injury .It has capacity to deal with more patients, most patients will be seen, assessed and treated in under one hour. The HSE would encourage the public to attend the Emergency Department for emergencies only and would advise people to contact their GP or GP Out of Hours services in the first instance.

the fire personnel saw Graham Patrick Litchfield of 60 Pearse Park acting suspiciously and alerted Gardai. The defendant, who had a lighter and was trying to light cardboard, admitted starting the first fire. Damage to the bin was estimated to be €45 with a €100

call-out charge for the fire brigade. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his 23-year-old client had drink taken on the night. He did not enjoy good health and was worried about health issues at the time. He apologised to the court for his actions.

putting on the football boots in 16 years. “I hadn’t played football since my U-14 days with Pats when I would have played alongside Paddy Keenan and Dessie Finnegan so I thought it would take me a while to get back into the swing of things. Somehow I managed to get into the first team but my only problem was that my soloing needed lots of practice so I used to hit the streets in the evening after work with a

football to work on my skills”, laughed Stephen. “I started bringing the ball out with me on my evening runs and people in cars were beeping with me laughing at some mad fella soloing the ball along the road for 5km. My boss knows I’m big into running and triathlons and he asked me would I run the Ray D’Arcy half million half marathon on behalf of the company”, he explained. “Later on in the week he

told me that he’d donate €500 to the Laura Lynn foundation if I would do the run whilst showing off my newly improved soloing skills and I thought sure why not? “The idea of the race is for 2000 people to raise €250 and help raise half a million euro for the Laura Lynn Children’s hospice. I’ve already surpassed that target thanks to people kindly sponsoring me and I’m now looking to break through the €1000 barrier.”

Amazing standard of darts in top-of-the-table clash

“An amazing standard of darts a credit to both teams “ was the way this game was described by Pat Brady the landlord of the Avenue Inn. The game he spoke about was the eagerly anticipated game between the Avenue Eagles and “The Stags”. The standard of the game was so high that there was over 45 100+ scores in Six games of darts. The Eagles were in a very determined form and they went with all guns blazing as they had Graham Unwin , Owen Caffrey John Donnelly and Daniel Dunn to thank for an impressive 4-0 lead that won them the game.

Stags Red Commercial Gerard McKeown Paddy Gibney, Raymond Harte

Each and every game was outstanding and Paddy Kearney for the Stags took the captains roll and won the fifth game. Ray Campbell could do no more in his attempt to win a second game but he met Joe Finnegan at his very best. A

5-1 victory but the result did not show how impressive the darts were on the night. Seamus Rice was voted as man of the match for the Stags in a game of “TV” darts against Owen Caffrey. First Division The top of the table cannot

get any tighter with both Harry’s Bar and the Stags Green having exactly the same stats on the league table with only game difference separating them. This fact must have been on the mind of the men from the Bridge Street venue when they travelled to Kehoes on the Quay. They went in with their shooting boots on and came out with a 6-0 win which saw Chris Lennon playing great darts which earned him the title of man of the match. Second Division Top of the table and unbeaten was where Johnny

Masons found themselves before they walked into the Stags Head in this week’s round of games but the “Mighty White” of the Stags head had designs on being the first team to take Johnny masons to the losers enclosure. Derek Morgan was first man in and he got the Stags White off to the start they wanted with a 2-0 victory over Burt Reynolds. This was the score in the next two games as the Stags pushed on. Syl Matthews gained a game back for masons but team captain Paul McCourt secured a victory for the “Mighty White” that reopens

the title race in Division Two. This result added to drawn match between Castle bar Knights and Fergusons of Gyles Quay has made sure that four teams are still in the running for at least a runners up spot if not the title of divisional champions. The other game in the division was the Malthouse misfits against the punters tigers and despite being out of the title race both teams have been putting in good performance as the league nears its end. A 5-1 win for the misfits has kept there interest as they prepare for the upcoming Andrew McAlester Open Shield.

Attempt to set Leprechaun world record

One of the nation’s favorite events is aiming to break the world record for the greatest number of people gathered as leprechauns at the National Leprechaun Hunt in Carlingford on Sunday March 30 at 2pm. The event that has cap-

tured the nation’s imagination since the official designation of Slieve Foy Mountain in Co Louth as an EU Special Protection Area for Little People in 2009. Exactly 25 years ago, the suit and bones of a leprechaun were found on The

Slieve Foy Mountain by the late local business man, PJ O Hare. This sparked the original Leprechaun Hunt which was held on the Easter Sunday of 1989, attracting 4,000 visitors to the beautiful region of Carlingford..

purposes at the time. Frustrating the situation further are major changes in Government housing policies that now prevent social housing from being built on the land rendering them currently unsuitable for its intended use. This land has also depreciated greatly in value and would result in the council having to take a significant financial hit if resold. Local Councillor Tomas Sharkey has hit out at the council administration for not committing to an inquiry over questionable land purchases and the Government for not stepping in.

“I’ve asked the County Manager in Louth to investigate why €1.1m was spent on land that the planning section advised at the time was not zoned residential, that planners advised it did not have road visibility and the water department advised it didn’t have soakage”. he said. Cllr Sharkey calculated that 12,000 families would have to pay €250 in local property tax every year just to cover the repayments. He added that he could not discern any appetite for transparency about how this situation came about. “We have been given no information on how management selected the sites or negotiated the price, or

what criteria was used,” he said. He said that nothing will change in Louth’s political system unless the culture of the Council changes. “Some people would just prefer it if no questions were asked,” he said. “The management are used to not being asked difficult questions and now more than ever people are looking for things to be done above board, openly and with transparency,” he added. It was proposed that a solution to the repayments be explored at a national level or an interest only option be explored and that ICR’s be used to make the payments.

On the day of the hunt, 100 ceramic leprechauns are hidden on Slieve Foy mountain, with a total cash amount of €2000 beneath them. However, people that may come across a real leprechaun are requested not to try to capture them.

“This is about more than breaking a world record’ Frances Taylor, event coordinator said. “Only carriers of authenticated licenses will be allowed on the mountain that day and prospecting licenses are sold at €6 per person

with registration beginning at 1pm at the Village Green Carlingford. Ireland’s last Leprechaun Whisperer “McCoillte” will also be available on site to answer any questions about the lives of the remaining 236 little people.

Father continues his bid to get help for Niamh

H e a r t- b r ok e n father David Nesbitt has accused the HSE of wasting his time by asking him to apply for a place in a local respite centre for his daughter despite them admitting that his application stood no chance of being accepted. David has been trying to get help from the HSE to give his daughter Niamh the medical attention she desperately needs and fears somebody will get hurt if she’s not assessed soon. Niamh (17) who has the mental age of a

Shay, Eabha and Erin Myers enjoying the St Patrick’s Day Parade in Dundalk

seven year old attacked her parents with a knife last month and David is at breaking point as he struggles to find help for her. “I just feel at this stage that the trust with the HSE is completely broken”, explained David. They have been passing us off from one agency to the next with nobody seemingly willing to take responsibility for Niamh. “Recently they sent us out a 15 page document which they asked us to fill in for Niamh to be considered for a new respite centre which is

opening in Lordship later this year. I made enquiries and the opening of the respite centre could be as far away as September. Niamh is 18 in November and as the centre only caters for children under the age of 18 there is obviously no way that she will be considered for a place. “We’re just at our wits end here and feel like the HSE aren’t trying to help us at all. They still refuse to assess Niamh and we have been forced to carry out peaceful protests to try and get somebody to listen.

We were at the St Patrick’s Day parade in Dublin protesting last week and we plan on more protests in the future until somebody in the HSE agrees to listen to us. “After the knife incident I just couldn’t take it anymore and I knew we could not wait around any longer.” explained David. Niamh is a good girl outside of these violent outbursts and just needs to be properly diagnosed and given some proper treatment. I really don’t think this is too much to ask for”, he added.

Mother's Day, Sunday 30th March

T

his Sunday’s Mothers’ Day celebrations provide the opportunity for people all over the country to honour and express gratitude to their mothers for all they have done over the years. In Ireland, Mothers' Day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday in the Christian fasting month of Lent and as in scores of other countries, people in Ireland try to repay their Mothers on the occasion of Mothers Day for all their love and affection. The history of celebrating Mothering Sunday or Mothers' Day in Ireland can be traced to the medieval practice where children from poor families were sent to work as domestic servants and apprentices to work with the rich. Once in the year in the middle of the Lent these children were given a day off to visit their 'Mother Church' and worship the Virgin Mary. After visiting the Mother Church or Cathedral of their home town these children visited their Mothers and presented them with flowers they picked along the way. Girls baked a special Mothering Cake on the day. The pattern of living changed after the Industrial Revolution and Mothering Sunday celebrations almost lapsed. The custom was revived after World War II. Americans led the

way in bringing back the charm of the festival to European countries as their tradition and way of celebrating Mothers Day spread far and wide. On Mothers' Day, people in Ireland present flowers, gifts and cards to their Mammys. Many will take her out for dinner or lunch and it has been known to pamper her with breakfast in bed. Gifts are given to mothers with love from caring children. Programmes, plays and skits are organised at several places in honour of Mothers. There are many ways to celebrate Mothers’s Day and aside from treating her to a nice gift, here are some ideas on what to do. Start off with providing breakfast in bed as there are many great recipes

to create a meal to make it the perfect beginning to Mothers; Day. Set aside all other plans and treat the Mother in your life as a Queen for the day. Turn the day into a one-day adventure to someplace special. Grab the whole family and do something special. Spending the time together is what really counts. You might consider trying to gather all the grandparents, great grandparents, aunts and uncles and other family members together for a joint celebration. Remember, giving Mammy the day off could be the best gift of all. Encourage everyone to pitch in and let your Mum sit back and relax. They deserve it!

Curfew altered to allow man video Dundalk FC games

A Dundalk man has been given the go-ahead to continue providing video analysis for Dundalk FC games after having the conditions of his bail relaxed. Harry Taaffe of O’Hanlon Park, Dundalk, applied to have conditions of his curfew varied to allow him to travel to away games, and

had the application granted by Judge Flann Brennan on Wednesday last. Mr Taaffe, who admitted carrying out citizen patrols to assist people who feel vulnerable in their homes, applied to have a curfew lifted to allow him video Dundalk FC football matches. On a previous sitting, he told

Dundalk District Court that as he carries out video analysis for the club, he would be restricted in covering games away from home due to the curfew that was imposed. Mr Taaffe is charged with causing criminal damage to a house and car on January 13, along with threatening or abusive behaviour and as-

The Bellew Family of Barmeath Castle

Annagassan & District Historical Society holds its next lecture on Wednesday March 26 at 8pm in Finnian’s Hall (beside Dillonstown Church) Annagassan. This illustrated lecture is entitled ‘The Bellew Family of Barmeath Castle’ and the speaker is Bryan Bellew, the eight Baron Bellew. The Bellew family have been at the centre of life in Mid Louth for about 400 years. John Bellew was a successful lawyer and lived at Willistown House, Drumcar. He lost his lands in the Cromwellian transplantation that followed the civil war of 1641. The family fought on the

Jacobite side at the Battle of the Boyne, and two members of the family died after being taken prisoner at the Battle of Aughrim in 1691. Patrick and Montesquieu Bellew were elected as MPs for Louth in 1830. Patrick was later created the first baron Bellew. Bryan Bellew succeeded as the eighth baron in 2010. The talk will cover the Bellew family history and aspects of the architectural history of Barmeath Castle and its related buildings. There is a lot of interest in this lecture and places are limited so come early. Entrance fee is €5 and includes tea/coffee afterwards.

sault on February 5. Part of the bail conditions included observing a curfew from 11pm to 7am. At the initial hearing on the previous week, Insp Beggy stated that Mr Taaffe had been given bail in relations to charges over two incidents where physical violence was alleged. He added that

Gardai were concerned that this may continue if he came across something while on patrol. However, he stated that he would consider applications to have the curfew lifted on particular nights where matches were taking place. A letter from Dundalk FC was presented to the court

which stated that the manager and players depend greatly on the service which is provided on a voluntary basis. Insp Beggy said he would have no objection to varying the bail on the dates of away games provided Mr Taaffe returned home directly. A list of away fixtures was handed to Judge Brennan.

olmen Theatre Group are delighted to announce we will be staging Ken Ludwig's hilarious comedy Lend Me A Tenor in An Tain Theatre Town Hall Dundalk from Wednesday 2nd April to Saturday 5th April. This is the second time we have presented this furiously paced comedy to Dundalk audiences and many people will remember fondly the laughter and hilarity they enjoyed twenty one years ago when first performed by the group. Director Paul McGee has assembled a very strong cast for this current production including three people who were int he origial cast in 1993, Gerry O'Hara, Gabrielle Tuomey and Paul himself. The cast is completed this time by Paudie Bree, Tony Markey, Karyn McCooey, Irene Dunne and Karen Shields. This group of actors have thoroughly enjoyed rehearsing this outrageous comedy and we're sure that our audiences will ahve just as much fun when they come to see us. Lend Me a Tenor is a comedy really well worth seeing and it has thrilled audiences from New York to London, indeed when it was produced in London it had the crritics in raptures, the Sunday Express said "it fills the theatre with the sound of laughter" and the Guardian was equally impressed "Hilariously over the top"it announced, so don't miss it! About the play - The understudy who becomes a star overnight is one of show business's best loved stories. When, in 1934, the fate of a charity concert in Cleveland, Ohio (which has been sold out to 1000 customers and is to be followed by a party involving 50 lbs of shrimp mayonnaise ) is in jeopardy because the Italian tenor hired to sing the lead has fallen into a drunken stupor and is presumed dead, the impresario's diminutive, docile assistant, with operatic ambitions, blacks up and wins acclaim as Otello. The tenor awakens, dons his costume and then follows an hilarious comedy of confusion in which the two Moors are absurdly confused by swooning females. Add a volatile Italian wife, an outrageous bellhop and a cynical impresario and you have a recipe to rival the classic farces.

Tommy McConville painting handed over A PORTRAIT of the late Dundalk sporting legend Tommy McConville has been generously handed over to the County Museum, Dundalk. The painting by Michael Gavan Duffy was auctioned in aid of the North Louth Hospice and Homecare Foundation, in memory of the legendary Dundalk footballer who passed away last October The painting was successfully purchased for €440 by a group of friends headed by Tony O’Kane and Bill Elliot. They then approached museum curator, Brian Walsh, with a view to donating the painting to the museum. “Tony and Bill came to me saying they wanted to put the painting somewhere that the public, and future generations in par-

ticular, would realise Tommy’s legendary contribution to Dundalk FC. “From a museum perspective, I accepted the offer straightaway. Tommy McConville was a sportsman of iconic status in Dundalk. His contribution to Dundalk FC – perhaps the town’s flagship sporting organisation was immense and it is only fitting that his portrait will feature in the museum in many ways in the years ahead.” The 50cm x 70cm canvas will now be included in the County Museum Art Collection. This means that it will not be housed in a specific exhibition but will feature in many displays in the Museum’s future. “We feel that the best way to remember Tommy in the years ahead “, he added.

NEW IMPROVED VW POLO

Information just in regarding the new improved VW Polo. The new Polo now features EU6compliant engines which are up to 23 per cent more fuel efficient than the old ones. On the petrol front there is a choice of two three-cylinder 1.0-litre MPI units with 60 or 75 PS; two 1.2-litre four-cylinder TSI engines with 90 or 110 PS and a 150 PS 1.4-litre TSI engine with cylinder deactivation (ACT). The diesel power plants include two new three-cylinder 1.4-litre TDI engines, with 75 and 90 PS. Core safety equipment includes ESC stability control, Hill Hold and an Automatic Post-Collision Braking System which automatically brakes the Polo after a collision to reduce the chance or consequences of a second impact. Safety options include a Driver Alert System (standard on BlueGT) and select Adaptive Cruise Control with Front Assist and City Emergency Braking. There should be six trim levels, ‘S’, ‘S A/C’, ‘SE’, ‘SE Design’, ‘SEL’ and ‘BlueGT’. Volkswagen ‘S’ is equipped with a six-speaker Composition Audio System with 5.0-inch colour touchscreen, SD card reader, DAB radio and USB and aux-in connections. There are

other features such as a heightadjustable driver’s seat, illuminated vanity mirrors, cup holders, and ‘gloss black’ interior highlights. The ‘S A/C’ model gains manual air conditioning. Next is the ‘SE’ model which comes with on top of the ‘S’ spec, 15-inch ‘Lyon’ alloy wheels; a chrome-trimmed front air intake; body-coloured door handles and electrically adjustable door mirrors; a leather-trimmed threespoke multi-function steering wheel (plus leather-covered gearlever and handbrake lever); a multi-function trip computer; remote locking and an alarm with interior protection; manual air conditioning; and a Composition Media System with 6.5-inch colour touchscreen which adds a glovebox mounted CD player and more graphical interfaces. Inside there are chrome highlights throughout the cabin, while fivedoor models get electric rear windows. The ‘SE Design’ gains 16-inch ‘Portago’ alloy wheels; a black gloss radiator grille and door mirror caps; front fog lights, dark-tinted tail lights and rear windows; and LED number-plate illumination. The interior is trimmed with ‘Pyramid’ cloth upholstery with a choice of light-

coloured ‘Ceramique’ or darkercoloured ‘Palladium Grey’ panels, and ‘Ceramique’ fabric inserts in the doors. There are dash panels in ‘Dark Rhodium’, front sports seats and aluminium-capped pedals (made more noticeable by the white footwell illumination). The Polo ‘SEL’ model comes with front and rear parking sensors, 16-inch ‘Rivazza’ alloy wheels; front fog lights; tinted rear-windows; illuminated front footwells and a front centre armrest with storage compartment in addition to the ‘SE’ spec. The top of range model is currently the ‘BlueGT’; there will be GTI version later in 2014. The ‘BlueGT’ is powered by a 1.4-litre TSI 150 PS engine with ACT cylinder deactivation. It rides on 17inch ‘Montani’ alloy wheels and 15 mm lower sport suspension. It features a bespoke styling kit, including side skirts and special bumpers, gloss black radiator grille and door mirror caps. Inside there are sports seats trimmed in ‘BlueSpeed’ cloth with Alcantara bolsters and a black roof lining. An XDS electronic differential lock has been added for improved traction and handling and you gain cruise control and a Driver Alert System.
