Local girl Lauren McCullough received a wonderful surprise last Wednesday as Brian O’Driscoll, Cian Healy, Jack McGrath and Ian Madigan paid a visit to Temple Street hospital in Dublin along with the RBS 6 Nations Trophy. Twelve-year-old Lauren who goes to school in Scoil Ui Mhuiri in Dunleer has been diagnosed with end stage renal failure and currently attends Temple Street hospital three days a week for dialysis treatment. As the players visited the Renal ward, Brian O’Driscoll was particularly keen to meet Lauren as she was one of the stars of a heartwarming tribute video dedicated to the Irish

Brian is on top of the world - again By Paul Byrne TIME is proving to be no obstacle for 60 year old North East Runner Brian Lynch as he scorched around the track in Budapest to become over 60s 1500 metres World Champion. And just to put the icing on what was a magnificent victory the Dundalk athlete also set a new world record. Brian finished in a time of 4:26.72 to better the record time of 4:27.27 he had set in Athlone recently, which had knocked eight seconds off the previous record. Andrew calls for organ donor support way local organ trans- port organ donation and By Niamh Kirk As organ donor aware- plant recipients are to make it clear to loved ness week gets under- calling on people to sup- ones if they want to donate should anything happen to them. Dundalk native, 29year old Andrew Gallagher, has felt the life changing benefits of a transplant which was donated by a living donor, his mother-in-law Jacqueline Foster. Six years ago Andrew was diagnosed with kidney disease; they were operating at about 30% capacity. “It was a shock, the doctor laid it all out about the dialysis and a transplant. It was frightening, I didn’t know what to say, I never knew anyone who had needed a transplant before,” said Andrew. “I played five aside football twice a week right up until diagnosis, after that maybe once. But by the time I had the transplant, I couldn’t walk up the stairs without losing my breath,” he said. With medication, comprising of about 13 tablets a day and a strict diet, he managed to delay dialysis treatment for almost two years. He

saw it coming and moved his wedding forward, eight weeks after he said ‘I do’ to his wife Nicola, he began dialysis treatment. His brother and sister were screened to check whether they might be considered as living donors but neither was a suitable match. But quietly, Jacqueline Foster, Andrew’s mother-in-law decided that she would also be screened. It took her about 18 months, during which time Andrew was sceptical that a living donor transplant like this could work. “I really didn’t think she would
be able to, I didn’t know her until I met her daughter,” he explained. Andrew was sitting having tea with his in laws in October 2013 when Jacqueline got the news she was a suitable candidate and asked Andrew if he was ready. The operation took place a few weeks later and within only a few days, Andrew was feeling the difference. “The operation took place on a Monday morning, and I was on a drip but even half way through the week I knew it had made a hell of a difference.” He was home within the week.
“You don’t realise how sick you are until you get the transplant, it made such a difference.” Organ Donor awareness week takes place from March 29 to April 5 during which time IKA volunteers will be distributing organ donor cards and selling forgetme-not flower emblems in Dundalk and in other towns and villages throughout Co Louth. Organ Donor Cards can be obtained through local pharmacies, doctors’ offices or by phoning 1890 543639 or Freetext the word DONOR to 50050.

CBS pupils mark World Water Day
Students mark World Water Day
Dundalk Tidy Towns, in an effort to promote waste minimisation, have launched an initiative to reduce the amount of cans, plastic water/ drinks bottles, drink cartons/sachets in circulation. The 5th and 6th Class pupils of CBS Primary School took part in the launch and two Tidy Towns Committee members, Celine Breen and Mary Capplis, visited their school on Friday March 21 in advance of World Water Day on Saturday March 22. The students engaged in an interactive talk on the valuable resource of water. Already active and well briefed on the benefits of recycling, the students learned more about how to minimise the amount of waste generated in the first instance. They were each given a plastic water reusable drinking bottle by Dundalk Tidy Towns.

confident heading to Budapest for the World Championships. Brian, from Barrack St. in Dundalk joined the North East runners 15 years ago having previously played with Dundalk GAA sides the Young Irelands and the Dundalk Gaels. However according to the man himself he only really started taking the sport seriously ten years ago at the ripe old age of 50. “I often say that I’ve only started growing up since 50 as that is when I really started taking the running seriously. Joining the North East Run-
ners was one of the best things I’ve ever done as they are a great group of lads and the camaraderie is fantastic. Last weekend’s win in Budapest was such a huge buzz and I have to say the whole weekend was such an enjoyable experience”, explained Brian. “I had a few nerves the night before but I was talking to a couple of the Drogheda runners and we hatched a plan that I would lead from the front and try and burn the opposition with my pace. “Going into the last lap I managed to burn everybody off except the
Dutch runner but thankfully I pulled away from him in the final 150 metres. “To get the record was a bonus as I honestly wasn’t thinking about it at all. “I actually slowed down over the last ten metres so probably should have knocked a bit more off it”, laughed Brian. Not content to rest on his laurels Brian is planning to run a 10K in the coming weeks before setting his sights on next year’s outdoor World Championships in Paris. “I’ll keep on going as I really love the running and it’s a pleasure to go
out and run with the North East Runners teammates. They’re a great bunch. I’d like to thank them all for their
help over the years. Also I’d like to thank all at Martin Food equipment where I work and last but not least Glenmore
Athletics Club who let me use their running track in preparations for the World Championships”, noted Brian.
Eamonn O’Boyle to run as independent candidate
Cllr Eamonn O’Boyle, the current and final Cathaoirleach of Dundalk Town Council has announced that he will be contesting the local elections, which take place on Friday May 23, for the Dundalk-Carlingford and Dundalk South constituencies as an independent community candidate. Cllr O’Boyle was first elected in 2004 and was sub-
sequently elected in 2009 to Dundalk Town Council to represent the people living in the constituency known as Dundalk West (Ward No 3) which happens to spread almost evenly across the constituencies of DundalkCarlingford and Dundalk South for the Louth County Council elections. The Fine Gael councillor stressed that he has not
resigned from the Fine Gael party but feels he owed it to himself and his supporters to seek re-election. “I’m not out to do anybody in Fine Gael any harm and there’s no ill feeling towards them on my part but I feel I owe it to my supporters to put myself forward as a candidate and let the people decide if they want me to continue to stand up for them
in local council.” he added. “The campaign starts now and I’m playing catch up to an extent but I won’t leave any stone unturned in my bid to get re-elected”, promised the Ard Easmuinn man. O’Boyle lists among his major campaigns and achievements over the past 10 years serving as a councillor on Dundalk Town Council the keeping of Dun-
dalk’s Market Square in public ownership; the removal of the derelict Customs & Excise Buildings on the Newry Road; successfully challenging the former County Manager’s plan to leave Dundalk’s Fire Station unmanned between the hours of 11pm and 8am daily; and is consistently campaigning to have Dundalk’s flood risk defences reinforced.
RehabCare host family fun day RehabCare, in conjunction with Oriel Active, will host a free family fun day for children with special needs on April 6 from 3pm to 6pm at Oriel Park in Dundalk. Open to young people with special needs through 18 years of age, the event will fea-
ture dancing, games, bouncy castles, football, a sensory area and much more. Refreshment stalls will also be on site. RehabCare held a fundraising appeal last week and stationed volunteers around Dundalk to assist with the cause. One of the
groups involved was GF Dundalk, a nondenominational church located in the Northlink Retail Park on Coes Rd. They are excited about next week’s event and honoured to be helping with the worthy cause. Families of children with special needs who are interested in attend-
ing the free event are asked to RSVP by emailing deirdre.quinn@ rehabcare.ie or mary. mccourt@rehabcare.ie RehabCare has two resource centres in Dundalk. The health and social care division of the organisation was established in 1995.

Miss World brings good news to St Vincents fashion students By Paul Byrne
ST Vincent’s Transition Year students were surprised and delighted when top model and former Miss World, Rosanna Davison made a visit to the school to announce the Junk Kouture Bank of Ireland Wild Card winners for the costume ‘Harvest Queen’. The Wild Card gives the creation the chance to take part in the Junk Kouture Grand Final which takes place in The Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin on Friday May 2. The dress will be
modelled by Clare Keenan and she will be accompanied on the night by her fellow team members Emma Delaney, Ciara Mahon, Ruth McNally and Juliette Morrison. Also taking part in the final is Chiara Mischo with her wonderful design ‘In Vino Veritas’. Junk Kouture is a national competition for second level students in Ireland which challenges teenagers to create highend wearable fashion from everyday junk that would normally find its way into the bin. Junk Kouture aims to
inspire and ignite passion in these teenagers while at the same time subtly educating them about the importance of recycling and reusing waste for the good of the planet. In the last three years, Junk Kouture has established itself as the premier fashion competition for teenagers throughout Ireland. The competition is launched annually in September to coincide with the teenagers returning to school. The grand final then takes place with the 20 finalists from each region battling it out
Staff asked to make checks on wheels before accident By Niamh Kirk
The HSE has said that requiring Ambulance staff to carry out pre-shift checks on the wheels of the vehicles is in line with best practices after it emerged they had sent an internal memo to staff to check wheel nuts two weeks before a wheel fell of an ambulance in Dundalk. An internal memo was circulated to HSE ambulance staff dated February 21 detailing how yellow wheel nut markers had been introduced to help with early detection of loose nuts. It asks staff to carry out a daily inspection of the wheel nut markers and make sure they are in the correct position. An off-line wheel nut marker indi-
cates that the nut is loose and in this case the memo says the ambulance should immediately be taken out of service. In response to criticisms of overloading staff with responsibilities they are not necessarily equipped to do the HSE said: “Ambulance staff do not carry out any ambulance maintenance. However, ambulance staff are required to carry out routine pre-shift vehicle daily inspections in line with NAS policy. As part of these pre-shift checks, crews have been requested to visually inspect wheel nut markers.” Two weeks after the memo was drafted the back wheel fell off an ambulance at the Xerox junction in Dundalk. The incident is being investigated by the HSE.

them". According to Lauren’s mother, Kerry, the rugby superstar was overwhelmed having seen the video and thanked all the children who had been a part of it. “The players popped in last Wednesday and Brian
in particular took time out to speak to Lauren to thank her for her part in the video. He told Lauren he absolutely loved the video and that it was the most touching tribute he had received”, explained Kerry. “Lauren was thrilled when she seen the boys coming into the ward and
she was delighted to get a chance to speak to Brian and the boys. She is currently waiting on a kidney and attends Temple St hospital three times a week for dialysis. This week is Organ Donor Week as well so it’s good to be able to highlight all the need for more donor’s to help people all
around the country”, added Kerry. “It was lovely to see the smiles on all the kids faces and it really does make a difference when people like Brian come in to pay a visit to them in hospital”, she noted. The hospital was a sea of green with staff lining the
corridors applauding the players. They took the time to visit the ICU and the Renal ward spending time with the patients and their families. With over 145,000 children passing through its doors in 2012, Temple Street has many specialities as well as being the
National Tertiary Referral Hospital for Neurosurgery, Renal Dialysis and Kidney Transplant, Spina Bifida and Opthomology. Each year more than 50,000 babies and children attend its A&E making it one of the busiest in Europe. National Donor Week runs from the March 29 to April 5.

Huge interest in Patsy Kelly 5K
One of the highlights of the local sporting calender, the Patsy Kelly 5K Run, will be staged for the third year on Saturday April 12. The event is being organised by Clan na Gael GFC and North East Runners to commemorate Patsy Kelly who was a prominent member of both clubs. Over the past two years, huge numbers have taken part in the event and according to Maurice Harrison of the organising committee, the entry is set to exceed last year’s total and has encouraged as many people as possible to take part. “Registration is going really well at the minute. The day before the race last year we had 320 registered, but already we have 380 for this year”, explained Maurice who revealed that all proceeds from the run will go to Women’s Aid Dundalk.
“Over the last two years the event has been a great success and the feedback has been brilliant. “We don’t get anything from it as all the proceeds go to charity but we are delighted to be able to give something back to the community”, added Maurice who thanked all who are supporting the event, including main sponsor, Niall Wiseman of Black and White Living. There will be a slight change to the route this year as the race will start from the green area in Ard Easmuinn, before travelling to the Castletown Road, through O’Hanlon Park, past Harp and on to the Carrick Road and down the Ecco Road before finishing at the Clans. “The new starting point means that there will be less disruption to the Carrick Road and also provides a better area for warming up.
We are grateful to Willie Duffy and the Ard Easmuinn Residents Association for facilitiating this”, explained Maurice. The organisers are delighted to welcome Patsy Kelly’s daughters, Aine and Roisin, on to the committee and they have joined the likes of Jim Gonnelly, Niall Gorham, Noel Litchfield, Paul Gray, Isa McGuirk, Albert McGuirk and Aidan Kirk in making the preparations for the event. The Ladies Committee will also be heavily involved as they will be looking after soup and sandwiches for upwards on 700 people in the clubrooms afterwards. The event begins at 6.30pm and those who wish to register can call to the Clan na Gael Club any evening after 7.30pm or by contacting any member of the committee.

Local fighters claim national titles
Last weekend saw round two of the Kickboxing Ireland (KBI) Senior National Championships. MASF had two instructors competing for the highly sought after titles that offers a chance to represent Ireland at the prestigious WAKO European Championships this year. After winning his first round Enda Kelly demonstrated his skills and took Gold in both Forms and Weapons. Enda entered the arena with his double bo routine to secure his second consecutive Senior Irish National title in both
disciplines having won them last year also. Fidelma Martin entering the Veteran Ladies sections of continuous and point fighting, met her Cork based opponent with energy. After controlling the fight from the start, her opponent retired in the first round and Fidelma won her first National title of the day. The same opponent was to meet her in the point fighting however had to withdraw due to injury thus conceding the title and giving Fidelma her

MAS-F are as always proud to be part of the kickboxing community and adding four new national titles from four different disciplines to the dossier of the instructors, is hoped to encourage and motivate their students to achieve what they believe and it also indicates the quality of training that takes place in the club.
Horse enthusiast embarrassed to end up in court
A woman who has spent her whole life dedicated to the welfare of horses found herself in a very embarrassing position when she appeared in court to face two charges of animal cruelty. Sally Cox of Lisnawilly, Mount Avenue, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to the offences after two of her horses had to be put down. The court heard that ISPCA staff notified the veteri-
nary inspector in relation to concerns about two horses on Ms Cox’s property. The animals were examined on March 27, 2013 and a further visit was made on April 9, The horses were in such a condition on that occasion that the veterinary inspector recommended they be euthanised, which was done on site. The horses had sores and one was extremely lame
and it was felt that they were suffering unnecessarily. Solicitor, Conor MacGuill, said that his client admitted the facts and that she regretted the incident when she was at a low ebb and under financial pressure. “The facts are distressing and that is extenuated when you consider that Ms Cox has spent her entire life exclusively dedicated to the welfare of horses. She is
from a well-known family who married a well-known trainer and it is regrettable and embarrassing that she has to come before this court”, he stated. “The welfare of animals will continue to be her concern but this happened in terms of her own health, although things have returned to normal. “She has now returned to the role she previously held
where she is offering assistance to others. “This happened during a fodder shortage when she didn’t have the finances to cater for them and unfortunately the horses died. What happened was a lack of resources on almost every level but arrangements have now been put in place to ensure it won’t happed again”, added Mr MacGuill. The solicitor pointed out
that although his client is a land-owner, that comes with its own obligations and she is not the exclusive owner, and she survives on half a widow’s pension. He asked Judge Flann Brennan to leave his client without a conviction. The judge imposed a conviction and €250 fine and stated that he couldn’t ignore circumstances where two horses had died.

Over to you QUESTION: Do you think organisers of the Grand National have gone far enough to ensure the horses safety?
Viv Storey I think they should leave the race alone. They’ve already gone a long way to ensuring it’s safe for the horses and they shouldn’t water it down anymore. It’s an age old institution and should be left alone.
Gerry Byrne I think it’s absolutely fine the way it is. I watch it every year and I find it very exciting. I’ve even managed to pick a couple of winners over the years.
Driver tried to evade Gardai
A man who tried to escape from the Gardai pleaded guilty to three counts of careless driving at Dundalk District Court. Peter Thompson of 30 Bayview, Jonesborough, Newry, Co Down, was fined €300 in respect of each offence on September 11, 2013. The court heard that on that date the defendant was driving a two-axle rigid vehicle when he failed to stop for Gardai. He drove towards Jordan’s Corner in Ravensdale where he drove through a junction without stopping. He continued with no consideration for other users, driving on the incorrect side of the road and drove into
Ravensdale Park without stopping. He was slowed down by a tractor and an oncoming Garda car. He then took a sharp turn right before getting out of the vehicle and attempted to escape but was stopped by Gardai. Four 1,000 litre units were found in the rear of the vehicle. Barrister, Irene Sands, stated that another agency was looking into a related matter, and pointed out that there was no collision and nobody was put in harm’s way. She stated that the 47-year-old is a carer for his 93-year-old mother. She has recently suffered a broken hip and he requires his licence to drive her to hospital in Belfast.

I think they’ve adjusted the jumps over the years making them a bit smaller and safer for horses and jockeys. There is no sport where you can guarantee 100% safety. You get injuries in rugby, soccer and plenty of other sports. I think it is a lot safer than it used to be.
I actually think the poor old jockey doesn’t get mentioned enough when it comes to safety. Their safety has to be looked at as well. I think it’s ok as it is though.
I think more efforts should be made to make it safer. It’s far too dangerous for both the horses and the jockeys. I wouldn’t like to see anybody get hurt over a horse race.

Trespasser claimed he was looking for his brother
A man who pleaded guilty to a charge of trespassing at Dundalk Distirct Court reacted with disbelief after being sentenced to nine months in prison. Michael Ward, 13 Glen-
more Park, Muirhevnamor, admitted the offence on Tuesday March 18 this year but told the court that he was looking for his brother at the time. After being sentenced he
shouted out: “Nine months for trespassing. Are you serious?” Mr Ward, who had 27 previous convictions, was found by Gardai in a derelict building in Cedar-
wood Park. Solicitor Sean T O’Reilly stated that the defendant’s younger brother is a drug addict and he was looking for him, although he realises he shouldn’t have been
there. He added that Mr Ward has suffered with alcohol and drug addiction and constantly battles with alcohol. Judge Flann Brennan
noted that the defendant had a very bad record and stated that he had to take a serious view of the matters in front of him before imposing a nine-month sentence.
Special vistor at music workshop
Forty children and young people from across County Louth experienced a rare and valuable choral workshop opportunity recently, delivered by internationally acclaimed choral conductor and master teacher Dr Doreen Rao as part of Music Generation Choral Training Programme. The Music Generation workshop was held to prepare students for the Big Sing taking place on April 6 when hundreds of children and young people from across Ireland will gather in the Mansion House Dublin for a national choral performance organised in association with Music Generation, The Association of Irish Choirs, the Choral Music Ex-
perience Institute and Local Music Education Partnerships. U.S. based Dr. Rao, Music Director of the Buffalo Master Choral and Director of the US Institute for Choral Teacher Education, is considered a global leader in the field of choral conducting. The 40 children and their conductors benefited from a two hour workshop, directed by Dr. Rao at Dundalk Institute of Technology’s Music Department who will be travelling throughout Ireland over the next two weeks delivering Music Generation workshops with local choirs in advance of the Big Sing. Coordinator of Music Generation Louth Gem-
ma Murray said: “Doreen’s visit has provided an excellent opportunity for the members of our local choral team to receive additional mentoring and training and also for the children and young people to have the opportunity to work with such a prestigious leader in music education. It’s been a once in a lifetime opportunity ahead of their participation in the national “Big Sing” on April 6.” Since Music Generation Louth’s initiation in 2011, some 2,000 children and young people in Louth now have access to a range of high quality, affordable music tuition in their own Dr Doreen Rao taking part in the Choral Training Programme locality.

Ten months for man with very bad record
A man who was described as “having a very bad record” was sentenced to ten months in prison after pleading guilty to a theft charge at Dundalk District Court. Stephen Maguire of 22 Maple Close, Avenue Road, Dundalk, appeared alongside his brother, Andrew, of the same address, who had the case against him adjourned pending a Community Service Report. The court heard that on March 27, 2013, the brothers entered a premises on the Coe’s Road and took a quantity of steel. They were later stopped in a car on the M1 which was being driven by Stephen Maguire, despite the fact that he was disqualified at the time. No admissions were made at the time but they pleaded guilty to the offence in front of Judge Flann Brennan. Liam Lawlor at the 2013 event with Stephen Maguire, who had 22 previous London Rose, Grace Kenny convictions, also pleaded guilty to stealing

number plates from a jeep on St Alphonsus Road on May 16 last year. He was identified on CCTV and admitted the theft to Gardai, stating that he had been paid €150 for the plates. Solicitor, Eleanor Kelly stated that Andrew Maguire, a 21-year-old man is engaged to be married in October, was very foolish on the day in question and stated the he would not come to the attention of the Gardai again. Ms Kelly stated that 23-year-old Stephen Maguire had recently become a father and is trying to stay out of trouble. She asked for one last chance to prove that he has mended his ways and he was fit to do Community Service and would be willing to pay compensations. Judge Flann Brennan, remarked that he took a serious view of the offences which were of the “blatant, old-fashioned, op-
portunistic type”, as he adjourned the case against Andrew Maguire to June 18 for a Community Service Report. He recommended 200 hours in lieu of ten months. However, he stated that he was not convinced he should deal with Stephen Maguire in a similar way. “The property was not recovered and he has a very bad record so I am satisfied that the sentence of ten months in prison is appropriate. In relation to the driving offences he sentenced to one month and imposed a disqualification of two years. There was also a six month sentence in respect of the theft of number plates. Ms Kelly appealed to the judge to give her client one more opportunity and suspend the sentences, but Judge Brennan rejected the plea and fixed recognisances in the event of an appeal.

Cross-border successes for Dundalk snappers Dundalk Photographic Society engage in a cross border three way interclub competition on an annual basis for quite some time and 2014 was no different. Early March seen the three competing clubs Banbridge Photographic Club, Ballynahinch Camera and digital imaging club and Dundalk Photographic Society come together in this year’s host town of Ballynahinch.
The format of the competition involves every member from each club submitting their best monochrome and colour print these are provisionally critiqued by the judge, each club then selects what they consider would be their ten best monochrome and ten best colour prints for a final judging round where marks are awarded out of 10 for each print. Dundalk Photographic So-
ciety had a score of 86 points out of a possible 100, Ballynahinch 78 points from a possible 100 and Banbridge 80 from a possible 100 a strong scoring all round. For Round Two Judge Terry Mc Creesh awarded his scores and this time four images were awarded 10 out of 10, again the scores were tallied but first the judge had to select the best monochrome image and he selected a stun-
ning still life image captured by Dundalk Photographic Society member Colm Kean for his print “3, 2, 1”. The best colour print went to the Illustration by Eithne Ni Anluain modelled by Raphaella with Love called “Valkyrie”. With the entire colour print scores tallied Ballynahinch had scored 76 from a possible 100 points, Banbridge 77 points from a possible 100
points and Dundalk Photographic Society scored 90 points from a possible 100. When each team’s scores were combined Dundalk Photographic Society took first place with a score of 176 points to retain the “Interclub 3 Way Perpetual Shield” . Banbridge second place with a score of 157 points and in third place came Ballynahinch with a score of 154 points.

Martin Bellew will Sinn Fein officially launch retire at next election their election candidates By Paul Byrne
Independent Dundalk Town Councillor Martin Bellew will not be standing for the forthcoming local elections having announced his decision to retire from local politics. Cllr Bellew has a long and distinguished career in local politics and is the current longest-serving member of Dundalk Town Council having first being co-opted onto the council in 1979 after the death of his father, Jimmy. The Meadow Grove man made his decision not to stand for May’s local elections having thought long and hard about it over the Christmas period. According to Martin he feels the time is right and will look back with fondness on

a political career which spanned 34 years. “I felt that 30 odd years in local politics was probably enough and having thought about it over Christmas I decided not to seek re-election for May’s local elections. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it and feel that this is the time to walk away”, explained Martin. “My wife Sarah passed away in 2010 and she would have been the backbone of my previ-
ous election campaigns. I was always very lucky to have a great team around me and Sarah was at the very heart of that. I have been very lucky over the years in politics and I’d like to think I worked hard for the people I represented and was always straight with everybody I dealt with”, he added. Cllr Bellew officially made his retirement announcement at last week’s meeting of Dundalk Town Council, where he received warm tributes and well wishes from his fellow councillors. He thanked everybody who had given him help and advice in his political life and also paid tribute to his loyal supporters and everybody who voted for him over the years.

A large contingent of Sinn Fein members turned out to support the 11 candidates nominated to go for the Local Election which take place on May 23. Each candidate spoke for a few minutes indicating the issues they will be highlighting on the campaign trail. Dundalk Town Councillor Jennifer Green highlighted the need for better public consultation on local projects noting that hundreds of thousands has been spent fixing errors that would not have occurred had the council management listened to people’s concerns, while Cllr Tomas Sharkey remarked, “There are 122, 097 people in County Louth and we are responsible for making sure that every one of them has a better life”. Cllr Edel Corrigan said that she wants to tackle the culture of exclusion where those within local government that have given positions of privilege to some

individuals and groups. As well as the individual areas of concern there was a common theme among the group: holding the council to account by taking responsibility for errors and to break up what they view as a counterproductive, cosy alliance between Fine Gael, Fianna Fail councillors and the council management. Accountability, transparency and a council less interested in itself and more interested in the needs of the community are what the candidates are aiming to achieve collectively, through
strength in numbers. Sinn Fein currently have six members on the Louth County Council and will be buoyed by the weekend opinion poll which showed that support for Government parties has fallen while Sinn Fein’s support is up five points now at 21%. They spoke about a sense of cohesion among the candidates and the potential to demonstrate how a large minority of Sinn Fein can operate and achieve its goals: and their agenda is set against opposition parties and the council management.

W naszym Klubie Młodych “Pajęczyna” marzec jest zawsze miesiącem pełnym atrakcji. Tego roku rozpoczęliśmy od wielkiej pyrzygody. W niedzielne popołudnie, wraz z rodzicami i opiekunami z klubu odwiedziliśmy Formula Karting w Newry. Patryka. Choć to był troche długi i zimny dzień to sam udział w paradzie był sympatyczny. Szkoda, że było nas tak mało. 21 marca to pierwszy dzień kalendarzowej wiosny w Polsce, zwany popularnie dniem wagarowicza. Tego dnia polskie dzieci i młodzież ucieka z lekcji bez ponoszenia przykrych konsekwencji. To czas topienia marzanny i szukania pierwszych oznak wiosny. My ten dzień spędziliśmy u Pani Agnieszki na ploteczkach przy herbacie (a dokładniej coli) i ciasteczkach. Na wspólnym graniu w ‘kocham Cie Polsko’. Podczas dwóch spotkań klubu w Apple Tree (Roden House) mieliśmy warsztaty artystyczne – robiliśmy karnawałowe maski wiedeńskie. Wyszły pięknie a całe warsztaty bardzo nam się podobały, były interesującym przeżyciem i nowym doświadczeniem. Edyta Szymanek

Darts League Town Hall is home to enterprise centre Dundalk tension continues to By Niamh Kirk
With the dissolution of Dundalk Town Council on the horizon, the future of public buildings has been up for debate but already plans are put in place to utilise the Town Hall. At last week’s council meeting it was confirmed that the Town Hall officers will bring the entrepreneurial spirit right into the town centre with the Local Enterprise Offices (LEO) taking up residence in the iconic building. Cllr Mark Dearey who proposed the motion in December said that the move was an excellent idea that brings entrepreneurship and business support at the heart of the town and at the centre of the new local government agenda. “It is going to be a business resource centre for all of Louth and I would encourage anyone with a real business need to get to know what the new LEO set up can do
to help them develop or scale up a business idea. It means too that the LEO staff are now at the commercial heart of the town. This will result in more informal networking and business intelligence passing back and forth”, he said. The Town Hall has also been a bastion of the arts in Dundalk and recently a company, the Tain Arts Centre, has recently been established to take over management of the arts facilities. The company are in the process of recruiting a new arts manager for the arts centre and an announcement in the new arts manager is expected within the next two weeks. Last year DTC published a report that outlined some of the challenges facing the arts in Dundalk at the time which included the recruitment embargo on Local authorities meant that a new venue manager could not be recruited, and at the time no current member of staff has the experi-
ence or expertise needed to carry out the role. While expressions of interest were sought, negotiations fell through last July and it was decided the most suitable option was to set up a limited company comprised of members of the arts community and local authorities to manage the facilities. The company, called the Tain Arts Centre, is run not-for-profit but “rather to carry out a specific purpose,” which includes managing An Táin Theatre, The Space, The Basement Gallery, Maeve’s Bar, and the box office all housed in the Town Hall. While early indications are that the Town Hall will continue to be an artistic and cultural bulwark as the interest in the building and others transfers to LCC, a spokeperson said that “A final decision as to the services that will be delivered from the various council buildings is yet to be determined.”
St Louis students Sinead O’Hagan and Stacey McCartney who recently received their John Paul II Awards in Armagh from Archbishop Eamonn Martin
mount in the Tubourg Dundalk & District Darts League with the recent games providing plenty of entertainment and drama. In the race for the Premier Division title, the first job is to get into pole position, the next job is to hold it and the Ciarain Dunne Avenue Eagles were determined to carry on their winning ways as they hosted Jackie’s Army in the Avenue Road venue. The Eagles started well with Graham Unwin hitting a 16 darts leg to take the first leg and hitting a maximum in the second leg to comfortably beat Hamilton Smyth. Conor McArdle repeated that score line as he levelled the game. This win was to be added to by Hamilton Archer and going into the last game Jackie’s still had hope of a draw. Alas the saying that “With experience comes class” rang true as Danny Maguire finished off a good night for the Eagles as they continued their push for the league title. First division: The man of the match title in the game between Oriel active and Courtneys was to be a split decision just like the result on the night. Courtney’s had Conor Mackin throwing super darts in his game against Gary Stewart. Mackin was in great scoring form by hitting the treble 20 with high frequency while in the previous game Patrick Taaffe was out shooting Ciaran Dunne . The final score of 3-3 was a fair result on the night. Second Division: The top of the table clash in the Second Division was a game where team selection would prove to be a key factor. The Fergusons team went into a commanding 3-0 lead but they couldn’t make it over the final hurdle. The Masons team showed great resolve to come back to snatch a draw. Cian McCormack held his nerve well to hit the winning double in a deciding leg in his game against Adam McDonnell. This result has ensured that the game in hand for Masons will prove extremely important.

Lend Me a Tenor in An Tain
Sixth Year students from St. Louis Dundalk had a welcome break from the classroom last Wednesday, but not from study, as they headed to Dublin to see The Abbey Theatre’s production of Sive by John B. Keane. The director, Conall Morrison, created an engaging, entertaining and heart rending production of the play. The set design by Sabine Dargent gave some of the Art students plenty to admire, while the powerful performances by all those on stage brought the play to life far more convincingly than any classroom could. Deirdre Smith, Sixth Year English teacher, was very impressed by the show and declared it one of the best performances she had ever seen. “Here in St Louis we try to give the students as many authentic experiences of their texts as possible. They went to a live production of Macbeth earlier in the year and it was good to let them also see a modern play, by one of the great Irish writers of his time, in the most historically significant theatre in the country”, she stated.
Town gets set for annual 10K
Dundalk is set to be over-run by athletes tonight (Wednesday April 2) when the very successful 10k race is staged once again. Dundalk Institute of Technology will host the event for the first time with the race being run in aid of Development Perspectives a local development NGO. The race has previously been organised for the past four years by Brian McCrystal but this year DkIT Sports and Societies, DkIT Student Union and Development Perspectives will work together to carry out and improve the
Dundalk 10k. Having DkIT involved will add greatly to the event with all the extra available facilities such as the college canteen to cater for all the runners afterwards with over 1,000 car park spaces. The run itself will both start and finish in the college while still taking in the atmosphere of the town centre like previous years. The event itself is AAI certified and chip timed and the cost of registration is €20 or for students there is promotion deal of €15. All participants receive a free
t-shirt and goodie bag on the day of the event. There are also great prizes to be won for first, second and third place winners. The race is in aid of Development Perspectives a local development NGO based in Drogheda, Co. Louth. Development Perspectives are a part of a national and global network of curious, critical thinkers and development practitioners working for social justice. Participants can register online at www.dundalk10k.com

Ardee Band look forward to national championships The Ardee Concert Band have had a busy march in the Bandrooms of the Bohemian Centre rehearsing for their entry into the Irish Association of Brass and Concert Bands National Band Championships in the Soltice Arts Theatre in Navan on Sunday April 13. The effort is outstanding, rehearsing twice a week for two hours each night under the Baton of their conductor Brendan Breslin. They have even gone as far as to
having extra 4 hour Intense rehearsals working on bringing their pieces to championship standard! March is typically a hectic month for Ardee Concert Band, with St. Patrick’s Day being the busiest day of the year, this year was no exception. The Ardee Concert Band played at Noon Mass on St. Patrick’s Day in the Church of the Nativity of Our Lady, Ardee, under the Baton of Kevin Reilly. Members had a quick turnaround as they had to be back at the band room for 2pm to form up the ranks
for the town’s parade at 3pm, as per usual the band led the festivities, which is always a great honour to be bestowed. The Senior Band also had an extra engagement that weekend on Saturday March 15 when they played in a return concert with the Millicent Singers of Clane in Clongowes College Boys Chapel as part of their Irish concert for Seachtain na nGaeilge. The committees and members of the band would like to thank all who gave to their recent Church Gate Collection.

opel's brazilian
Opel has prepared a special edition Astra Copacabana for this year's World Cup. Celebrating the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Opel's Astra Copacabana is dedicated to soccer fans from all over the world that would be willing to sit inside a car which has real grass upholstery from the
Maracana stadium as well as a horn with samba or vuvuzela tones. You won't find the usual floor mats as these have been replaced with sand from the Copacabana beaches. The Opel Astra Copacabana also has a crushed ice machine and an alcohol-free Caipir-
inha dispenser. On the outside it wears the Brazilian flag on the roof while on the sides it has palm trees and "dancing lines" to showcase the "South American temperament." Under the hood is a 4-cylinder, 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with 200 HP (147 kW).

MINI TEA FUEL
the new MINI Cooper T. Available as ‘Chamomile Yellow’, ‘Red Bush’ and ‘Earl Grey’ the ecological vehicles are expected to be lapped up by the British public upon release.
Each car can cover up to 40 miles on a single cup and comes complete with its own Dunk Avoidance Technology (DAT). The custom filtration system blocks the fuel inlet to prevent biscuit wielding passers-
by or owners from dunking their snacks in the fuel tank. Head of Cooper T engineering, Dr. Ivana Kuppa, said, “This particular project has been brewing for years. Our extensive research has shown that the nation’s favourite drink is also an ideal biofuel. We already know good things come in small packages, but with Cooper T customers benefitting from up to 40 miles per cup, we are delighted to have the opportunity to bring this car to market.”

b.m.w. booster
BMW looks set to change the face of motoring with the introduction of a patented artificial G-force technology. BMW’s new Force Injection Booster simulates the effects of spirited driving, even when commuting at slower speeds, to create a thrilling ride. When activated at speeds under 20mph, the Force Injection Booster (FIB)
works by extracting kinetic energy from the car’s engine and converting it into positive g-forces. These are then channelled directly at the driver and passengers through the air conditioning vents, while a mild electric current is delivered through the front seats, to simulate the same exhilarating feeling of driving at high speed*.
This technology comes complete with the BMW AirNet®, the latest in hair protection technology, to ensure that occupant’s don’t have to compromise between personal style and driving performance. Professor Mika Notbetrü, Head of BMW Innovation, describes FIB technology as “Mindblowingly unbelievable”.
