Two local cousins who have not only battled cancer but have resumed their football careers will line out alongside players from all over the country in a special football match over the Bank Holiday weekend. Aidan and Derek Shevlin are taking part in the GAA match to raise awareness of the disease and to illustrate that players can return to football following treatement. The Professor Hollywood Memorial Cup will take place in Portlaoise on Monday May 5 and will also raise funds for cancer units. Aidan who plays with Stabannon Parnells and Derek who lines out for the

Dreadnots have both battled and defeated cancer and are looking forward to the game which is in aid of the cancer units in St James’s and St Luke’s hospitals. This match is made up of players who have been treated for cancer and will see GAA legends Brian Cody and Mick O’Dwyer each manage a team with all money raised staying within the cancer units and not to be used for any other purpose. The aim of this match is to raise funds and to also highlight to people that you can regain your fitness and health after cancer treatment. New cancer support centre is set to open in Dundalk Dundalk Leader 30th April 2014

There were tears of joy last week from the Cara Cancer Support Centre committee members as their year long dream to get their new home ready to be opened to the public was finally realised. The centre will open to the public on Friday May 23. The care centre’s new home is located in 7 Williamsons Place which is owned by Sinn Fein who have allowed Cara to use it as a cancer support centre. Claire Byrne who is a member of the Cara Cancer Support Centre Committee described the emotions of finally getting the project completed having fundraised for the past year. “We were determined to establish a centre in Dundalk to help support every cancer patient and any person at all affected by the disease. Cancer is on the rise in Dundalk and surrounding communities, and it is very

important that we have somewhere in town to offer people a venue where they can come to meet others in the same situation as themselves and to provide support to families and carers of patients”, explained Claire. “We have to thank Sinn Féin for donating the use of this building and also to the many people who donated their skill, time and expertise voluntarily to help paint and decorate the house and help create a wonderfully relaxing environment for all who will visit us”, added Claire. Anna Brennan who is also on the committee described the sheer joy the group felt when the house was fully completed a few weeks ago. “When the house was completed a few weeks ago we just sat in here and cried tears of joy upon seeing it all finished. We have been fundraising for over a

year now and it was just a wonderful feeling to see our dream become a reality”, explained Anna. “We would be here all day if we listed all the people we would like to thank for helping us realise our dream but we do thank every sin-

THE recently published report into Louth County Council buying houses from its own staff paints an ugly picture said Cllr Tomas Sharkey after reviewing the document. The audit was commissioned following revelations that properties owned by a senior executive engineer and a senior executive officer Housing Department

were sold to the council in 2010. Each of the council employees were placed on suspension since October when the investigation began and have since returned to work. Cllr Sharkey described the audit as having been carefully worded to deliver a stinging criticism of how the housing department has been managed. According to the councillor, the report which was completed by Deloitte and published last week confirms long held suspicions around house purchases by Louth County Council with public money. He said that sweeping changes are needed across the Housing Department and that he feels the Employee Code of Conduct has

been breached. The report outlines how a Senior Executive Engineer sold his own house to the council at a cost to the taxpayer of €142,562.50 and with an additional refurbishment cost of €62,662.03. “It is incredible to read that the results of house inspections undertaken by the Senior Executive Engineer were not documented in a formal report,” said Cllr Sharkey. “Louth County Council’s solicitor wrote many times advising that structural surveys of purchased houses be carried out but they did not happen. Inspections by the Senior Executive Engineer were not formally documented. There was no record that the houses being bought satisfied a demand from

our housing waiting list”, he added. The report also details how on one occasion the council’s solicitor was instructed to proceed with a purchase before a Director’s Order to buy it was signed. Cllr Sharkey however says that it was not documented how the two houses came to the attention of the Housing Authority or how they became available for purchase. “Policies and procedures did not exist,” said Cllr Sharkey who added that the report from the

Louth County Manager confirms a grave mistrust that the public has for the housing section. The third annual Transition Year Triathlon is set to take place this Thursday May 1 in St. Mary’s Drumcar. The triathlon is organised by Louth Local Sports Partnership in conjunction with An Garda Siochána and Physical Education Association of Ireland. The students take on a gruelling swim 200m, 10k cycle and 3k run. But they are

not required to do it all alone. Students participate as either an individual or part of a three person team so that one person swims, one person cycles and the other person runs. This is one of the largest inter school events in Co Louith with more than 200 studetns from nine second level schools taking part.

Without significant job creation this part of the country will continue to be left behind.

The level of disposable income per person in Co Louth is more than €1,000 lower than the national average. According to recent figures from the Central Statics Office the average disposable income per person in Co Louth is €18, 095. The national average is €19,055. The average total income in Co Louth in 2011 was €22k down more than €4k from 26k in 2008. Disposable income is calculated by adding earning and social welfare payments and deducting tax and social insurance average. The data shows that incomes were still falling in 2011, four years after their peak in 2011 when the average disposable income in Co Louth was €22,362. The average income in Co Louth fell 15% from 2008 to 2011. However Co Louth is fairing the best out of the border region counties which have the lowest earnings at €16,894, 100% lower than the national average, while Co Louth is 6% lower.

MEP says Louth needs help to create economic growth MEP Mairead McGuinness, has said that this week’s Central Statistics Office figures showing residents of Louth having below average disposable income “must give added impetus to national policy efforts to redress the current imbalance between the regions.” The CSO figures found the Louth average disposable income was €18,095 per person in 2011 compared with a figure of €21,329 for Dublin. The MEP said that the Border region, including Louth, needs particular attention. “We need a regional focus targeted

towards the specific potential of each region. And a central part of this focus has to be town and village renewal. Addressing the needs of existing SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises) must be a particular priority, as well as encouraging young entrepreneurs.” She said foreign direct investment is critical but it is the domestic sector where seven in every 10 workers are employed by SMEs. “The SME sector is where most jobs will come from in the next numbers of years but it has a particular set of issues that much be addressed, issues such

as an overhang of debt and access to business lending for cash flow and investment.” McGuinness who is Vice Chairman of the EPP in the European Parliament, Europe’s largest party, said the

European Investment Bank will play an increasingly important role in funding the SME sector. “The European Parliament has been at the centre of progressive, constructive solutions to the problems confronting the EU, problems that are not unique to Ireland but which require a European solution,” she said. “Rural development co-financing from the exchequer is also important to ensure that regions get the support needed to fund agri environment and on farm investments,” she said.

The Tuborg Dundalk and District darts league has had a busy final few weeks in both league and cup competitions which showed that when the pressure was on, the quality of the players came to the fore. The last three weeks have seen the final two games in the league competition and the cup finals night played in between. The league games saw results put the cat among the pigeons and added to the tension going into the last week. The Avenue Eagles were on top of the Premier and needed a win to secure the league title but it took Joe Finnegan to take out a 121 to secure them a draw against Commercial 1896 and it left things set up for a great final week. The First Division went to the very last week as well with Harry’s Bar praying that the Green machine of the Stags would slip up and in the Second Division it was down to the last week as three teams were chasing the title. The cup finals night was held in three different neutral venues and a high standard of darts was on show in all three. The Premier Division saw an all Stags Head final with The Stags securing the cup with a hard fought win over the Stags Black. This would put them in great form going into the final round of the league. The First Division Cup was a tense battle with Harry’s Bar facing the Courtney’s team who were out to claim some silverware. Andrew Neary for Harry’s threw a Man of the Match display to claim the Cup for Harry’s and break the heart of the Courtneys entourage. The Second Division saw league leaders Johnny Masons take on the Stags White and drama and tension filled the Commercial Club as this game went all the way to the very last leg in the very last

game and doubles were missed on both sides before Jim Conroy hit the winning double for the Stags White. The first winners of the year were known and once the celebration’s abated the focus was once again onto the league. The Premier Division saw the top two teams meeting in the same venue but playing with different opponents. The games were played at frantic pace and each match was being watched with great interest. The Avenue Eagles rose above the The Stags to stand proudly on top as the division was decided with the Stags following in as runners up. The First Division saw a change of fortune as The Stags head took the title by beating the Avenue Celtic team. Harry’s Avenue Eagles celebrate winning the Premier Division Bar fought to the very end and their win on the night showed that they never stopped trying. In the Second Division Johnny Masons held their own darting destiny in their own hands and they ensured that they were going to finish in style and secured the title of league champions. This was a most welcome potion after losing the cup the week before. The 2014 season is still not complete as the league divisional singles takes place this Thursday in three different venues. The singles competition will be played down to the last eight and then a finals night will be played closer to the end of the league. the venues are as follows: Premier Singles - Oriel Active; First Division Commercial Club; Second Division -The Stags Head; Last Eight - Finals night Kehoes Bar. Candidates warned over posters on Giro d’Italia cycle route

Candidates in the coming local election have been warned to remove any posters that have been erected along the Giro D’Italia route. Failure to remove them will result in a fine and the local authorities taking the poster down anyways candidates were told. Louth County Council requested that candidates refrain from putting up any election material along the route by asking them to agree to a ‘poster promise.’ However some candidates posters appeared both north and

south of Dundalk where Giro cyclists will pass through. Senator Mary Moran says she is so concerned about the impact the posters will have on Giro fans she has contacted the Transport and tourism ministers. “Our election posters will not mean much to the millions of viewers on TV across the world, and indeed I believe they will only serve to distract from the beauty of our countryside. “We have an opportunity to showcase our country along the route and I believe we should do

all we can to highlight the beauty of our country. “I have contacted Ministers Hogan and Varadkar to express my concerns and I am calling for the posters to be removed along the route for the weekend of the race,” she said. “This is a non-political event let’s use the opportunity to show that everyone can work together to show our country at its best. If unanimous agreement has been reached on this matter in the North then I believe we should also follow suit,” she added.

Local cyclists impress C p at national events It was another weekend of big racing for Ireland’s cyclists. The premier event of the weekend was the Shay Elliott Memorial, a race that has been running for over 50years held in memory of Ireland’s first professional cyclists and former yellow jersey wearer at the Tour de France. Held in Co. Wicklow the race covers 140km and features the dreaded Shay Elliott climb. The day was not made any easier by the constant wind and rain that battered the riders from start to finish. Cuchulainn had five men line up in the race and Michael Barry was having a great ride before bad luck intervened and he crashed out of the winning break on a greasy bend, forcing him to abandon. Call for stronger action to prevent diesel laundering

SINN Fein’s Gerry Adams has criticised new Government efforts to tackle illegal fuel laundering and joined the chorus of organisations in the area calling for a different approach. A dye that is impossible to ‘wash’ out of fuel is set to be introduced to agricultural diesel aiming to stop the criminal gangs who use chemicals to remove the current green identifying colour from the commercial fuel. In the past a number of stakeholders have criticised the continuation of using dyes as identifiers suggesting that methods of removing the new marker will be found, and it could result in even more toxic materials being dumped around County Louth. It has regularly been suggested from local stakeholders that the most effective way to tackle the problem is to introduce a rebate system for farmers who could claim their costs back. The Sinn Fein leader added his voice to the call for a change in policy.

“The only effective means of closing down this illegal activity is to end the differential between agricultural and non-agricultural diesel. The Government needs to introduce in its place a system where farmers can reclaim a rebate on their fuel costs based on vouched expenditure”, he said. Out of all the border counties, Louth is paying the price for the continuation of the illicit diesel trade most acutely. Almost €5m has been spent on clearing up after diesel laundering dumps across the border region, in the past six years. However, the vast majority, €4.1m has been spent on cleaning-up after diesel laundering in Louth alone. Over the past six years there have been 490 indcidents of dumping in Louth, 406 in Monaghan and 10 diesel laundries have been closed in Louth since 2010 with 33 being shut-down across the border region. As well as funding criminal gangs, the il-

legal fuel trade takes a considerable toll on drivers who unwittingly use the fuel. The washed diesel is infused with chemicals that can do catastrophic damage to car engines and fuel systems. Between 2012 and 2013 87 filling stations were closed along the border for selling illegal fuel. However the Irish Petroleum Industry Association estimates that there are as many as 120 illegal sites in Ireland, focused on the border region. These operations are costing the Irish taxpayer an estimated €155m per year. “The only guaranteed means of ending this lucrative trade is to have a single tariff for diesel. A common approach could then be adopted to rebate to farmers the additional costs incurred in fuel purchases”, said Deputy Adams. He also called for an increase in the penalties which range from €5k and prison sentence to €126k and five years in prison. In response Envi-

Great chance to get up Schedules available close to Giro d’Italia race for agricultural show Cycling Ireland are offering people the chance to get up close and personal with the Giro peloton by signing up to become an official Giro D’Italia Marshal for the Republic of Ireland leg of Stage Three. If you are interested in being part of the Giro and volunteering to be a Marshal, please complete the following survey, where you can either select the training day of your choice, or wait for a date and venue that is more suitable for you. Once you complete the training day you will be entered in a draw for a number of prizes.

Simple as ABC for election candidate Dundalk Town Councillor Sean Bellew has announced that he is running for the coming local elections as an independent candidate. The Former Fianna Fail councillor will run in the Dundalk South constituency. “It has been an honour to represent the people of Dundalk on the Town Council for the previous five years. I would now like to offer myself before the people of Dundalk South, to continue representing the town on the new Council,” said Cllr Bellew who has been on the council since 2009. “I am campaigning on the platform of ‘ABC’ as I stand for Accountability, Business and Community.” On accountability Cllr Bellew said “With resources as scarce as they are, it is unacceptable that wastage and duplication of expenditure should occur. When

such careless spending of public funds does occur, it is vital that those responsible for that spending be brought to account.” Cllr Bellew says that the council must do whatever it can to support local businesses. “In June 2013, I proposed a motion before the Town Council, calling on the government to change the 19th Century law at means that a new occupier of a premises can be made liable for unpaid rates of a previous occupant.

This motion has since received support in other councils throughout the country. “I have also passed motions calling for local authorities to favour local businesses for contracts, whenever possible. If elected, I will continue to support and promote local businesses,” he said adding that he would oppose any increase in commercial rates. Making a community a better place to live is at the core of his campaign he says. “This includes co-operating with the Gardaí to combat antisocial behaviour, and also assisting and supporting local sporting, voluntary and residents’ groups.” Cllr Bellew joins six other independent candidates contesting in Dundalk South, Oliver Morgan, Mark Fitzsimons, Eamon O Boyle, Brian O’Neill and Maeve Yore.

Louth to benefit from an improved broadband service

Rural areas being brought up to speed. Highspeed broadband is set to be rolled out across rural areas in Louth as the Government invest in communities that have been left behind. The availability of high-speed broadband has major implications for businesses and industry as well as for the domestic users and this new venture aims to stop rural towns lagging behind in what is considered the key infrastructural component of the 21st Century. To date over 1,000 rural communities nationally have already been identified as target areas for the proposed fibre-optic connections. It is envisaged that telecommunications operators such as Eircom, UPC and Sky will be able to offer multiple services off

the new fibre network. For the past few years rural areas have been denied the some commercial plans and models that have been on offer in more urban areas due to the lack of high speed connections to the network. Residents in these areas have had to use boosters for wireless signals and regularly deal with slow download and streaming speeds as well as the frustration of waiting on a webpage to load. But no more. In Co Louth the rollout begins in Baltray, Beaulieu, Blackrock, Dromin, Grangebellew, Greenore, Jenkinstown, Kilcurly, Monasterboice, Mullins Cross, Newtown, Readypenny, Smarmore and Stabannon. This is an initial list and further locations may be identified as the mapping process continues.

Football club’s 40th anniversary bash attracting great interest The organisers of a night to celebrate Bay United Football Club’s 40th anniversary of Bay United’s 40th anniversary have been hugely encouraged by the response to the event. The soccer club, which is one of the bestknown in Dundalk, will host a special function in the Lisdoo on Saturday May 24 and are hoping that as many people as possible with links to the club will attend. A great effort has been put in by the organising committee over the past number of months and that has paid dividends as a large crowd is expected to attend. Tickets for the event have just been released and Colm O’Hanrahan of the committee is urging people not to leave it to the last minute. “We had a lot of people coming to us to reserve tickets before they actually went on sale so that is a good start. We want as many as possible to attend on the night as it promises to be a

Bay Football Club was founded in 1974 by Brian Mulholland (RIP),

Frank Quinn (RIP), and Breffni Rowan and in that first year the club entered an under 11 team in the Dundalk Schoolboys League. From that humble start the Club has grown and over the years has won every Cup and League in all divisions of Dundalk Schoolboy Football. Colm O’Hanrahan of the organising committee is encouraging as many former players and members as possible to take part in the events.

“Over the past 40 years we have had thousands of players line out with the club and it would be great if people made an effort to celebrate this occasion. “We have had some brilliant teams in the past featuring some great players, including five internationals”, explained Colm. Róisín takes to stage in Carlingford

On Sunday 11th May the Carlingford Heritage Centre will play host to local violinist Róisín Dooley. Following on from a sold out concert performance where Róisín was solo artist with the Fr McNally Chamber Orchestra in November last, Róisín makes a welcome return to the Carlingford Heritage Centre to once again showcase her undoubted talents. A former pupil of Fr Brendan McNally, Róisín is a regular performer with Castleward Opera, the RTE National Symphony Orchestra, the RTE Concert Orchestra and the Fr McNally Chamber Orchestra. She gave her first ever

solo recital at the Carlingford Heritage Centre back in 2006 and since then she has graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester and is currently studying for her Master’s Degree in Performance at Cork School of Music under the tutelage of Ruxandra Petcu-Colan. Róisín’s forthcoming solo performance at the Heritage Centre is sure to leave audience members both exhilarated and mesmerised as she displays exceptional interpretational and technical skills in delivering a programme spanning through the ages from Bach to Gershwin.

With only days, if not hours remaining, the excitement is building in the Togher area ahead of the forthcoming Strictly Come Dancing. Thirty-two volunteers have gone through five weeks of intensive training and practice in preparation for the main event which takes place next Saturday night in the TLT in Drogheda. The 16 couples will battle it out on stage to see who will take first place in this highly anticipated event. The top five couples will be decided on a combination of judges’ votes and votes sold to the general public on and before the event. Once the top five couples complete the danceoff, the judges alone will decide who will be crowned champion. The judging line-up includes GAA legends Peter Fitzpatrick

and Oisin McConville along with Dancworx owner, Donna Bradley and local celebrity Rosaleen Butterly. Steering committee chairman Mark McArdle reflects on the effort that the dancers have put in for the event. “It’s a tribute to each and every one of them for the time and commitment they have given to this fundraiser. As well as taking part in umpteen training and practice sessions, the dancers have collected sponsorship and sold a huge amount of tickets for the TLT. “There are a few stray tickets left here and there, but all 900 tickets are in circulation and we expect the night to be a sell out. Anyone who hasn’t yet got their ticket should contact me and I will do my best to help out”, he added.

Funds raised in this event will go towards the development of the grounds in Ballygassan where the club hope to purchase adjoining lands for a second pitch and develop the existing facilities. It is a joint effort between the senior, ladies and juvenile football clubs and the local camogie club. “It is the single biggest event that the combined clubs have ever undertaken and given the commitment from all involved, we would have no hesitation in taking on larger projects in the future – but we’ll get this one out of the way first”, explained Mark. The committee kindly ask everyone attending to arrive early as seats are unreserved. Doors open at 7pm for an 8pm start.

Vantastival kicks off the music festival season

The new MERC 400SL

Mercedes have introduced the SL 400 to replace the SL 350 model, it has gone on sale priced from £72,500 and deliveries will start in July 2014. The Mercedes Benz SL 400 is powered by a new EU6 compliant 2996cc six-cylinder bi-turbo engine outputting 333 hp / 480 Nm of torque. The 0-100km(62mph) time is 5.2 seconds with a limited top speed of 249kph(155mph). The official combined fuel consumption is recorded at 7.7L/100km(36.7mpg) with CO2 emissions of 178 g/km. The SL 400 Sport is equipped with 19” AMG 5-spoke alloy wheels as well as AMG front and rear aprons and side skirts, a boot lid spoiler in body colour and sports suspension. Other standard equipment includes Frontbass and Magic Vision Control, both the SL 400 and SL 500 will also now feature a DAB tuner and Tyre Pressure Monitoring.

Lexus are debuting their new premium compact crossover at this month’s Beijing motor show; it is their first entry into this market. It will take on the likes of the Range Rover Evoque and Audi’s Q5. It will go on sale across the world in the second half of 2014. The Lexus NX SUV will be available with three powertrains, a 2.5-litre 195 bhp hybrid in the NX 300h; a new, a 235 bhp 2.0-litre petrol turbo unit in the NX 200t; and naturally aspirated 2.0-litre petrol engine in the NX 200. Front and all-wheel drive versions will be available, together with Lexus’s stop and start system. Some models will be available with Lexus’s next-generation Adaptive Variable Suspension. Linked to the vehicle’s Drive Mode Select system, this can change the level of damping force to improve comfort and reduce body roll. There will be a comprehensive safety package that includes a new, full-range Panoramic View Monitor, all-speed Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and head-up display.

new mini paceman The 2+2 MINI Paceman has been revised for 2014, with a fresh new look and feel. There have also been tweaks under the bonnet to reduce emissions and boost efficiency. The Paceman engines now all meet the meet EU6 exhaust emission standards with an improvement in both fuel economy and CO2 emissions. To increase efficiency there has been a rework of the air ducting, wheel bearings with a lower friction coefficient have been fitted along with lighter wheels and tyres with a reduced rolling resistance.

The Paceman S see an increase in power output and now develops 190bhp and increase of 6bhp with a drop in CO2 emissions from 143g/km to 139g/km. The other models have seen a reduction with the Cooper Paceman now outputting 137 g/km, Cooper D (111 g/km) and SD (119 g/ km). There exterior sees new larger headlamps, there are new paint finishes including Jungle Green metallic and Midnight Grey metallic. And LED fog lights are now standard to compliment the LED daytime running lights.

Volkswagen TOUAREG MAKEOVER

The Volkswagen Touareg is getting a makeover for 2015 with a refreshed new look. The front of the Touareg features larger bi-xenon headlights; there is a deeper new front grille with four instead of two horizontal fins and a redesigned bumper to give it the appearance of a wider stance. The rear gets a new rear diffuser between the twin tailpipes and LED rear fog lights integrated in the bumper. The exterior is completed with new door mirror caps, a range of new wheel designs and new paint colours. The interior sees a new range of colours for the leather with new design accents and lighting. There have been some revisions to the technology and there are new safety features. All models will feature an automatic post-collision braking system, bixenon headlights and a coasting function on the eight-speed automatic gearbox. This last feature utilises the vehicle’s kinetic energy when driving downhill or when acceleration is not needed. As on existing Volkswagen models with coasting, it can be deacti-

vated temporarily by simply tapping and releasing the brake pedal, or switched off through the vehicle’s systems. The ADC automatic distance control (an option) has been revised. The ADC system, utilises a radar sensor to detect the distance from the car in front, maintaining a preselected speed and automatically braking or accelerating in traffic. It now includes a city emergency braking function, which can automatically pull away in stop-and-go traffic. Low rolling resistance tyres, stop/ start and battery regeneration systems are now standard, and both V6 TDI engines meet EU6 emissions. The output of entry-level 3.0-litre V6 TDI remains the same at 204 PS, while the previous 245 PS unit now offers 258 PS. Fuel efficiency has increased for both models, and emissions correspondingly reduced. The 204 PS engine now returns a combined cycle 6.6L/100km(42.8mpg) and 174 g/km of CO2 (previously 7L/100km(40.4mpg) and 184 g/km), while the 258 PS model returns 6.8L/100km(41.5mpg) and 178 g/km.
