Arrest will not impact on Adams role as TD
Dundalk Town Council Cathaoirleach Eamonn O’Boyle will launch “The Dundalk Style’ Architecture Poster at Noon today (May 8) in the County Museum. Guest speaker is Ian Lumley of An Taisce.
The arrest of Gerry Adams has not impacted on his ability to fulfil his role as a representative for Co Louth says local councillor Tomas Sharkey.
The County Councillor says that the Louth Sinn Fein team are “taking the arrest for what it is, a politically motivated stunt.” He says that the team are busy with the local election campaign and that the attempt at dis-
traction has not worked and they continue their work on the ground. The main stay of support for Sinn Fein in Co Louth has not been swayed by the situation over the Bank Holiday weekend he said. “The support and feedback from candidates and the endorsement of the hard work we do for the past ten years is strong. We managed to make €2000 from all of that and hopefully it will help some children fulfil their wishes”, she added. Dealgan boxing success Members of the Dealgan Boxing Club
The local Dealgan amateur Boxing Club have been very busy on the competition front of late, with some of their up and coming stars stepping between the ropes with great success. At 60kgs, reigning Irish Champion Martin O’Donnacha, after defeating his Cork opponent within a single round in his quarter final, was just pipped in his attempt to gain backto-back national titles for the Marian Park club when losing narrowly to Holy Family’s Ben Bannon. In only his second year boxing 13-year-old Lee Mackin impressed when going all the way in his Leinster championships accounting for some very noteworthy scalps along the way. In the nationals, Lee took the initial round
Martin O’Donacha, Lee Mackin, Orla Garvey, Nicole Agnew, Rachel Costelloe
against his Derry opponent but was unlucky to sustain a nose injury in the second putting paid to his attempt to be crowned national champion. The Dealgan coaches were very impressed with the progress both boxers have made this year it won’t be long before they are top of the podium once more. Some more youngsters have made their mark on the championships this year and will taste more
success in the years to come, Leinster Finalist such as Conor Woods and Paul Costello. Some fine performances came by way of Darren O’Donough, Jamie Williams, Caolan Travers and Sean O’Donough. Dealgan ABC’s female boxers are in full preparation for their assault on their respective national titles next week in the National Stadium. After all four girls claimed their Leinster crowns last month, three
of them will be entering the ring as defending Irish champions, most notably European champion Amy Broadhurst at 60kg. At 50k, Nicole Agnew will be bidding for her fourth Irish crown in a row alongside Orla Garvey at 57k will be hoping to make it a hatrick of titles for herself. One newcomer to the squad this year is the very talented Rachel Costelloe who in only her first year has taken the Louth, Meath & Leinster titles. Last weekend Dealgan ABC travelled to Derby, England to participate in some combined training with English clubs whilst treating its squad to a great trip to Alton Towers in appreciation for a fine effort this season.
New performance for Castle Players
The Castle Players will be holding rehearsal workshops in the Clan na Gael Hall at 8pm on Tuesday May 13 with a view to producing Paul Vincent Carroll’s play The Devil Came from Dublin. Anyone interested in taking part is welcome to attend. Carroll was one of Dundalk’s most successful exports. He was born in 1900 on The Old Golf Links Road in Blackrock. Having been educated at Mullagharlin NS and St. Mary’s College, Dundalk, he emigrated to Glasgow in 1921, taking up a teaching position there.
Sinn Fein candidates Sinn Fein’s 11 candidates for the Louth Council elections pictured at the County Council offices to hand in their nomination papers on Tuesday
While teaching, he began his career as a playwright, in 1932 winning The Abbey Prize for Things That Are Caesar’s, and later going on to win the prestigious New York Drama Critics Award in 1938 for Shadow and Substance and again in ’39 for The White Steed. He later turned his hand to screenwriting, providing scripts for, among others, Saints and Sinners-filmed in Carlingford in 1949 and Farewell to Greatness, which was presented on BBC TV in 1956. The Devil Came From Dublin is one of Carroll’s lesser-known
works, but as a comedy concerned with smuggling, the border, and the “Devil” of the title – an official investigator sent from Dublin – it is a work set in and satirising the bureaucracy and politics of his native border landscape. Anyone interested in taking part in bringing this local but prestigious work to the stage can join The Castle Players in the Clans on May 13. Unfortunately, we require that all who attend be over 16, but that’s the only proviso. No previous experience is necessary. Contact Pat McKenna on 087 1605319.

Dundalk all set for Setanta cup final
Celebrate the big
DUNDALK
&
20
Dundalk FC have a chance of picking up their first piece of silverware in 12 years this Saturday as they take on Sligo Rovers in this season’s Setanta Cup Final. In 2002 Dundalk lifted the FAI Cup beating Bohemians in the final but since then it’s been a lean time for supporters of the Lilywhites as the team have struggled both on and off the pitch. However, since Stephen Kenny’s arrival last year the team have enjoyed an upturn in fortunes with the club sitting pretty on top of the premier division and now looking forward to Saturday’s final against Sligo.
Stephen Kenny
John Mountney, Chris Shields and Kurtis Byrne have been a key part of Dundalk’s amazing turnaround and they are all looking forward to giving the supporters something to cheer about this weekend. “The supporters have been amazing”, enthused John. “Myself and Chris live in Dundalk and when we’re walking down the street we’re getting stopped
by supporters in the street and there seems to be a great excitement about the place” he added. Stephen Kenny has built a young side and this final represents the first chance to win senior honours for the majority of the team. It is a chance that Chris Shields is determined to make the most of. “We’ve been playing well for about a year or so now and it would be fantastic to have something to show for our efforts. We finished second last year and got to the semi final of the FAI Cup so Saturday represents a great chance to earn ourselves a medal. This is my first senior final as it is for most of the lads so we’re all very de-
termined to get the job done”, explained Chris. Kurtis Byrne was also in determined mood as he promised the supporters the team would do everything in their power to bring the cup home. “Our fans have been fantastic this season. They’ve followed us all around the country and have got right behind us so we really want to give something back to them”, explained Kurtis. “I think it’s 12 years since Dundalk last won a trophy and that’s far too long for a club as big as this. It’s great to see the buzz back in Dundalk and people talking about the team again and we’re looking forward to giving it our all on Saturday”, added Kurtis.

At their recent monthly County Executive Meeting at The Fairways Hotel, the Louth IFA invited the candidates running for local elections to attend the evening. There were many issues raised to the candidates including County Council inspection on farms, water charges, farmer’s incomes, single farmer’s payments, community alert, CAP reform, water charges and possible post office closures. Looking ahead to the local elections on May 23 Matthew McGreehan, the Louth County Chairman stated that it was important to vote for the candidates that will be a voice for famers and rural communities and will be a strong representative at County Council level.

Dundalk goes pink for the Giro d’Italia From Page 8
an auction last year. It’s a 14 year old Ford Ka and we have been driving it around the place for the past week or so and getting loads of comments from people about it”, explained Johnny. “We’re both into cars anyway so we decided we’d join in the fun by going pink for the big race. We’ll be out and about in the car around Dundalk on Sunday for the big race and we can’t wait for the action to begin”, added Johnny. With a global television audience of hundreds of millions, all eyes will be on Dundalk and businesses in the town have welcomed the race by painting and decorating their premises in the Giro’s signature pink colour. Dundalk is a designated stop for the Giro caravan carnival which will prelude the race and entertain the crowds including handing out free goodies. Other exciting events which will take place on the day include a cycling time trial competition on the Market Square hosted by Halfords Dundalk who is sponsoring a top of the range bike worth €800. There will also be street performers who will entertain the crowds as they await the race, and there will be lots of fun for younger cycling enthusiasts, including free face painters who will be joining in the carnival atmosphere. Everybody who is coming out to see the Giro cyclists are encouraged to do so as early as possible on the day to get the best viewing point, wear pink and bring town, club and county flags to ensure Dundalk is awash with colour. Many of the businesses across Dundalk are opening especially to join the celebrations. Details on road closures can be found on Louth County Council’s website. In recognition of the commitment of the local people getting into the Giro spirit, of Dundalk Town Council have announced free parking in Dundalk on Saturday the 10th of May. Sinead Roche & Fiona Cunningham of Dundalk BIDs & Tourist Office thanked the hundreds of people who have got in-touch and got involved in ‘Giro d’Dundalk’.

Rebecca provides warm up for Katie
Local Clann Naofa boxer Rebecca Gorman was part of the international fight night in Dungarvan that featured Olympic champion, Katie Taylor. Rebecca who took the fight with only a week’s notice was to fight Ireland team member Megan Maher. She stepped into the ring and took charge straight away by forcing Maher onto the back foot, and with every round Rebecca was to show her dominance and skill by bombarding her opponent with a series of head and body shots. The final round was very high tempo with both girls giving it their all and conclude a great fight which saw Rebecca get her arm raised with a 3-0 win over Maher. This was a great performance by both girls and a great warm up fight for the crowd as next into the ring was the main event of the night when Ireland’s
Pete Taylor, Katie Taylor, Rebecca Gorman, Jim O’Neil and Zaur Antia.
Katie Taylor defeated USA Olympic bronze medalist Kristin Carlson. This fight night was
a great opportunity and honour for Rebecca to be asked again to represent Dundalk and Ireland this time on Ka-
tie Taylor’s under card and also meet her hero in the locker room after their fights. Rebecca is due to
fight again in three weeks time in the under 18 intermediate championships and her coaches Hugh McMa-
hon and Jim O’Neil and all of Clann Naofa Boxing Academy are sure that Rebecca will do the club proud.
Candidate a witness to school safety issues From Page 1
a number of local election candidates. Tracey Sharkey of the school believes that it wouldn’t take vast sums of money to make initial changes that could help save a life or prevent injury. “We have a meeting this week with Senior Engineer Catherine Duff and Area Engineer Aenat Nic Gabhann and we hope that after seeing the situation, they weill be able to find a solution. “The first thing is that we need safety ramps and it is our understanding that this would not involve a huge cost. The excuse for not doing this was that there was no street lighting in the area, but it has been brought to
our attention that there are three poles already on the road that could be used for lights”, she explained. Tracy added that among the election candidates to visit the school in recent days were Mark Dearey and Peter Savage, while Colin Goss witnessed at first hand the risks being faced by pupils attending the school. “I took part in the safety walk last week and on that occasion there were about 40 children and 10 or 15 adults. At one stage we could hear a car coming at speed behind us and then braking hard, and it just highlighted the dangers being faced and how easily somebody could have been hurt”, explained the Fine Gael candidate for the area who believes a lot of
work needs to be done to improve safety. “There are a lot of issues surrounding safety for children going to school and I think the main message people are trying to send out is that something needs to be done now rather than waiting for something to happen. “It is clear that a lot needs to be done such as having a pedestrian crossing and speed ramps, while there is no footpath on one side of the road and only a very narrow one on the other. The concerens were raised going back ten years but when one of the children was almost knocked down when trying to avoid a pothole a couple of weeks ago, that was the signal to start a campaign”, explained Pupils at Scoil Nh Lorcan getting ready for their safety walk Colin.

Services provide over 11,000 meals The value of Dundalk Social Service Council to the local community was highlighted after it was revealed that over 11,000 meals were provided by the organisation in 2013. At the council’s annual general meeting on Monday April 28, it was announced that a total of 11,425 meals were cooked and distributed at a total cost of €28,350. This service was paid for with the help of a HSE grant with the shortfall being made up through church gate collection, flag day, donations and councillors’ contributions.
The meeting also heard that a new organiser for the Meals on Wheels was required as Gerry Sloan was stepping down from the role. Chairman, John Coggans, revealed that the role involved 3-4 hours on a Monday, Wednesday and Saturday and anyone interested could contact 9332848 or call to 15a Clanbrassil St. The Chairman praised Gerry’s efforts over the years and also to the cooks and drivers for their work. Mr Coggans also paid tribute to the former Chairman Jim Cousins who has served the council for 41 years, who passed away during
the year. At the meeting, Luke Martin gave a report on Parental Equality. Luke assists people in court cases and gives advice on guardianship of children. I’ll have family and friends going down to Portlaoise to support me and I know we’ll have a fantastic time whatever happens”, said Ciara who graduated from NUI Maynooth last year with a Bachelor of
Arts honours degree in business and geography. Brendan Galvin who is one of the Louth Rose organisers congratulated Ciara on a deserving victory and noted that she was a hugely popular winner on the night. “We had a great night in the Fairways and all 16 girls were brilliant. They’ve all become great friends which is what it’s all about. Last year’s winner Sarah McCrave gave a beautiful speech as she handed over the crown and spoke about what a great experience she had representing Louth. All the girls were delighted for Ciara which is always a good sign as it shows what a great girl she is. I know she’ll do herself and her county proud down in the regional finals next month”, noted Brendan. Ciara will now try and enjoy her first couple of weeks as Louth Rose before focusing all her attention on the regional finals in Portlaoise.
Special fun day to celebrate Bay Utd 40th anniversary
Bay United’s plans to celebrate their 40th anniversary are continuing with a number of special events being organised for Saturday May 24. That date will host an open day at the club’s grounds on the Rock Road which will feature a host of activities such as, bouncy castles, slides, penalty shoot outs, skill games, adult football games, the Frank Quinn Memorial Day and youth team player of the year awards. That evening there will be a function in the Lisdoo where members will get a chance to catch up on the many highlights over the past 40 years. Among the topics is certain to be the memorable trip to Norwich in 1989. That year Bay Utd made history when they were the first club team from the Dundalk Minor League to represent Ireland in an international competition. All previous representations from the town of Dundalk were made by combinations of schoolboys
Luke Martin is the latest independent candidate to enter the local election for Dundalk/ Carlingford after announcing his candidacy last week. The Toberona native is a father of five and has previously ran for both national and local elections and hopes to be able to make an impact locally. Luke is aiming to bring a sense of community back to Dundalk with more family involvement in local events. While he has a passion for parental rights’ equality; community, older peoples issues, housing, taxes and safety are some of the areas where he is aiming to make a change. Housing waiting times
Luke Martin
and perceived discrimination when it comes to allocation is something that he hopes to tackle. In particular the waiting times for local authority houses for men, some he says have been waiting for as long as five years. “I know sons who are back home with their parents waiting for years on a local authority house and it affects the access they can have to their children. Men feel they are being discrimi-
nated against”, he said. Older people he said do not feel safe on the streets or in their communities and are increasingly put under crippling financial pressures. These Mr Martin says will be made worse with the coming water charges and believes it should not be imposed on those receiving a pension. Safety and standards are also major concerns for Mr Martin who says that there is a double standard in requiring drivers to ensure their car is of the highest safety standards when the local authorities leave the roads in such a dangerous conditions. “If you are in a good, safe car and hit a bad pot hole you can lose control hitting someone
or something, that is too dangerous in housing estates”, he said. On running as an independent candidate one of four in the North Louth constituency he said that people are completely disillusioned with political parties in Ireland as they just want to tax you in some way or another. “If it’s not the property and water it comes in the form of carbon taxes which ups the price of fuel. People cannot afford it. Mostly I want people to get out there and use their vote I’m sorry if I don’t get to talk to everyone individually before the election but if people would like to contact me or help out on the campaign they can contact 086 2582250”, he added.
Love-Hungry Farmer set for Tain Theatre
Des Keogh, one of Ireland’s foremost actors and entertainers, will bring his hugely successful show, ‘The Love-Hungry Farmer’ to Dundalk on Friday May 9 for one performance only at An Tain Theatre in the Town Hall. Based on John B Keane’s bestselling book, ‘Letters of a LoveHungry Farmer’, and adapted for the stage by Des himself, the show has been one of the most popular
shows in Ireland and abroad in the last decade, and continues to find new audiences. It tells the story of John Bosco McLane, a bachelor of indeterminate age and according to his own assessment, ‘past his best’. McLane’s amorous adventures range from the hilarious to the pitiful. The Love-Hungry Farmer began its life in the Irish Repertory
Theatre in New York before being performed in Ireland to huge acclaim. Des Keogh received a Best Actor nomination when he performed the show at the Edinburgh Festival. Des Keogh, who celebrated 50 years as an professional actor in 2013, has been a constant presence on both the Abbey Theatre and Gate Theatre stages in Dublin.

league teams or Dundalk FC youth teams. The competition took place in Great Yarmouth and was hosted by Norwich City FC and aptly named The Canary Cup. A host of teams from all over Europe, USA and the UK participated and the competition still runs to this day. The idea for participation was that of the late Frank Quinn (founder member of the Club), who along with the club committee members including Eamon Bingham, Frank Gaughran, Joe Mullen, Brian Duffy and Brendan Wynne, or-
ganised the whole event from bus pick up at Bay Estate school to flights, accommodation, as well as a visit to Carrow Road to see Norwich City play Newcastle United in the Division One at the time. The team comprised some of Bay’s best talent including Brian Duffy, Eugene Burns, Ian Hazzard, Denis McCarrick and Ciaran Dunne. Paul Gaughran who had already been capped three times by the Irish Schoolboys league team was unable to join the squad as he had committed to travelling with
the Leinster schoolboys team. Bay were placed in a group comprising two Norwegian teams, a Danish team, two English teams and after a number of impressive displays just missed out on making the knock-out stages. The team returned to Ireland having won many admirers, friends and relationships for the future. Anyone who would like tickets or further information should contact Colm at 087 27991774 or Darren at 087 2259697 (after 6pm).

Maeve wants a more Mary enjoys success with Irish team open approach to politics By Niamh Kirk
The first and so far only independent female candidate for the local election has entered the race as Maeve Yore has announced that she is to battle for a seat in Dundalk South. Standing apart from party politics, Maeve says that local elections should be about local people, interested in the town and taking care of the area and less about long term political agendas or careers, and stated that she is very passionate about this approach. The mother of three and the founder of Special Needs Active Parents (SNAP) said that people are disillusioned with local politics. “People tell me they have never voted for a local councillor because they are all the same and they don’t take responsibility for anything, but I want to prove that they are not. I want to see councillors really take ownership of issues and see them through to the end. Women’s Aid for example, they knew for
Maeve Yore
months that closure was on the cards and did nothing until it was about to be closed. That is not taking ownership”, she said. The Dundalk candidate said that open communication and consultations were central to setting the agenda pointing to a number of failures by the council management that would have been avoided had they consulted stakeholders. “It galls me to see Stapelton Place. Doing it, doing it wrong, and then doing it again. It was the same with the lights at Market Square. And in the redesign of the Tain Theatre, there are four wheelchair seats, we have seven children in wheelchairs with SNAP so we can’t go and support local events like
the Panto. We ended up going to Drogheda because we can’t tell three children they can’t come along. Talking to the right people before the money is spent is something I would be quite vocal on”, she said. Older people’s issues are also a major concern for the Dundalk native who with her family took part in the intergenerational project with St Oliver’s. “Some people are afraid in their homes and afraid to go out, so it’s an awful dilemma. We need to honour and respect ourolder people,” she said. As well as older issues she believes in cultivating in interest an local affairs in younger people. “I am nervous and anxious for the future. We need to take a stand now for young people. When we are looking for them to take a stand for us in 20 years time it could be a very sorry sight.” Maeve stated that she wants to encourage people to take responsibility for the town, to get involved and commit to it.

bronze in her Kumite category. “Being part of the IKFC Team was not only a privilege but an experience that I will always treasure. Each and every
Protection of bathing waters is paying off By Niamh Kirk
The protection of local bathing waters is paying off as a new Environmental report shows that Co Louth’s beaches continue to have low pollution levels. The four main bathing areas, Port, Clogherhead, Seapoint and ShellingHill/Templetown all received a clean bill of health form the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for 2013. Louth Council was among the six authorities who
received a positive result for all the beaches in its care. The report marks an improvement in the quality of bathing water from the previous year when three of the four beaches were regarded as good, while the Port beach was considered to be only sufficiently acceptable to bath in. A overall drop in water quality had been expected due to the stricter European guidelines and heavy rainfall which was thought to lead to less compliance, but some beaches
returned to the positive pre 2012 levels. Overall the quality Irish bathing waters is up considerably, up more than 50% since 1994. The survey of Louth bathing waters tested for the potential risk of contracting gastro-intestinal illness as a consequence of bathing in waters. Both E.Coli and Intestinal Enterococci are types of bacteria that live predominantly in the gut of warm blooded animals, including humans. They generally enter the water en-
vironment in run -off containing small amounts of faeces from deposition on agricultural land or urban areas, from the land-spreading of manures, or directly from wastewater treatment systems and overflows. By themselves they present a relatively low risk of illness at the thresholds set in the regulations, however, because of their abundance they are used as indicators of the potential presence of other bacterial and viral species that pose a greater risk to health.

Over to you QUESTION: Do you watch the Eurovision or do you think it’s a load of rubbish?
Blathnaid Morrow
Chloe Reenan
I wouldn’t really have much time for it to be honest. The songs are all rubbish and it goes on for ages which is pretty boring.
No, I never bother watching it. It’s a load of crap. The songs are never any good and it’s all so boring to watch.
Gaele Deroquefeuil Geraldine Morrissey I used to watch it years ago and found it pretty enjoyable but in recent years it’s gotten very mediocre and it’s spoilt by all the countries voting for their neighbours no matter how bad the song is.
Historical footage of town online By Niamh Kirk Exclusive footage of Dundalk in the early 20th Century has been uploaded online after leading multimedia resource British Pathe made its entire video archive publically available. Four videos about events in Dundalk were made publically available for the first time two weeks ago when the company uploaded some 85,000 videos to the company archive some of which feature on Youtube. The silent videos are black and white and offer an incredible insight to life in Dundalk before the advent of the multimedia age. The earliest video in Dun-
dalk is of the 1921 Louth Hunt point-to-point races which took place on March 17. The minute long video depicts bookies of the day shouting odds, taking bets and collecting money before it cuts to an aristocratic man with two glamorous women getting out of a soft top white vintage car. It cuts to the race itself and a shot of the crowd watching it. Another video shows huge crowds welcoming ‘His Eminence Cardinal O Donnell on his first visit since being raised to Cardinalate. A military guard and bagpipes stand in salute as the cardinal in a carriage parades through Dundalk before it cuts to a closer shot of the Cardinal meeting digni-
taries. Footage of a derailed passenger train on Co Louth from 1933 shows the train lying on its side having fallen off the tracks. A few men begin inspecting the underside of the train before a group can be seen starting to climb onto the overturned carriages. The newsreel with the 91 year old footage says that the carriages were somewhat damaged but not entirely smashed. Another video is of a women’s indoor football match in 1966 between Jeenie’s Janes who beat the Angles by three goals to nil. Only one goal is captured on camera before it cuts to

the teams congratulating each other after which the winners pose with medals. Some locals are sure to recognise themselves, family and friends in this the most recent of the videos which is four minutes long and contains many shots of the crowds. However, some of the videos’ description inaccurately place Dundalk and Co Louth in Northern Ireland. Incredible never before seen footage of the events in Ireland and worldwide was uploaded when British Pathe digitised their entire archive and made it publically available. The raw footage can be seen online at www.britishpathe. com.
I do still watch it and I’m hoping Ireland qualify to make it a bit more interesting but It is getting to be a bit of a joke these days I think.
Chibuikem Ibeh I watch it but I would never like any of the songs. It’s all a bit silly. The voting at the end can be pretty good so I’d watch it for that really to see who votes for who.
Nestling Group celebrates
Over 220 senior citizens from across Louth gathered at the Carrickdale Hotel in Dundalk on April 29 for an afternoon of food and entertainment. The event was organised by the Nestling Group and saw a variety of different groups attend to celebrate the occasion. Among them were groups from Omeath, Carlingford Nursing Home, Cooley Active Retirement, residents from Castleross and Morehall Lodge retirement villages, Dealgan Nursing Home, The Birches Centre, Louth Active Retirement, Seatown
neighbourhood watch and Drogheda LRC, as well as members of the Nestling Group. Music was provided by Vincent Finnegan and The Vintage Quartet, with transport being supplied by Halpenny buses and Paul Connolly with the Garda Community bus amongst others. Ann Marron called on the community to value the diversity of older people. Ann who works in the Netwell Centre as a co-ordinator for older people’s services, said this has been another great day out for older people and the Netwell Centre.
“Our day trips have become important events in the social calendar of older people across the county and they are a great reminder of the diversity of the over 65 population. Events like this provide regular opportunities for older people to meet up with old friends and to make some new ones too, and the Netwell Centre is delighted to be at the forefront of such examples of positive ageing”, explained Ann. If you or your group would like to be included for the next day outing please contact Ann Marron on 0429370360.

The students raised in total the tremendous amount of €11,000 in April by hosting variety events including a wheelchair basketball
tournament which was a great success. The ‘Jail Break’ where Dundalk IT chaplain Fr Paddy Rushe volunteered to be the prisoner in the make
shift jail cell, and would remain there until the €500 bail was met by donations both offline. And lastly the ‘Day in the Life’ event where able bodied people got an opportunity to be a wheel chair user and see what challenges they faced going about their daily tasks. Members of Muscular Dystrophy Ireland ( 41 members of MDI living in Louth and Meath) really appreciate all the hard work, time and dedication that students and lecturers at Dundalk IT gave to this project.

Here To Help Day
By Niamh Kirk
It is less than 50 days until Women’s Aid Dundalk is due to close but efforts are continuing to establish a secure and regular funding source for the centre. Last month the Women’s Refuge announced that due to cuts in the funding that services would cease in June. However despite the announcement provoking a major reaction among elected officials and the people of Dundalk alike, there has been
no resolution on the Section 10 funding issue. The announcement of the closure of Women’s Aid was caused by a 73% cut in funding with the refuge being offered only €20k from the Homelessness Budget. Louth County Council blamed a Department of the Environment Directive that they say limited how much they could spend. At the same time the Department of the Environment stressed there had been no changes in the budget since last year and said the funding
decision was that of Louth local authorities. The directive clearly states that Local Authorities are ‘encouraged’ to spend 4.4% percentage of their homelessness budget on domestic violence provision. However, the Department’s representatives refuse to clarify what the Minister means by encouraged and it seems to be interpreted by the local authorities as a cap on spending. So far neither the Council nor the Department has come to a resolution on the Directive
and meanwhile the women’s refuge edges closer to closure. While an emergency meeting of Dundalk Town and Louth County Council saw €30k going to prevent the immediate closure of the refuge, it did not resolve the real problem of securing a regular funding stream. Women’s Aid Dundalk have always been clear that once off funding would only delay closure and what they need is secured funding in order to continue past June. The

reality is that the refuge still faces closure and we can’t let that happen,” said Cllr Edel Corrigan. “The only real solution to all of this is for central government to ensure long term adequate funding is reinstated to Women’s Aid Dundalk so as the resources they need are in place, to continue to do the wonderful job they do. The government parties need to ensure this essential service remains open by putting a long term solution in place”, P said Cllr Corrigan.

Matthews launch exciting competition for passengers
Matthews.ie are set to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their commuter service by giving away €10,000 in vouchers from Monday May 12 to Sunday May 18. The innovative local company will be giving away prizes of between €60 and €1,000 in Matthews and One For All vouchers to lucky commuters in a range of competitions next week. Matthews.ie started their Dundalk-Drogheda-Dublin service a dec-
ade ago and the 1,000th passenger on board next Wednesday (May 14) will be handed €1,000 in vouchers by Managing Director Paddy Matthews. “We have had ten years of setting standards in comfort and safety, but we have only been able to do that with the support of our daily commuters,” said Paddy, who founded the company with his wife Mary. “We would very much like to thank the people
who enable us to provide such a quality service – our passengers. “This is why we would encourage everyone to get on board, online on Matthews.ie and on Facebook and Twitter next week, to be in with a chance of taking home vouchers courtesy of Matthews.ie. “We know that many of our passengers have our annual or six-monthly Taxsaver tickets, so we have a combination of Matthews.ie vouchers
and One For All vouchers. “We have broken many records and set many standards as a company, but if it wasn’t for the faith of the local passengers in the early days, the service would not be here today. “We would like to thank everyone that has used, and continues to use our services, and we look forward to welcoming you on board next week for the celebrations.”

Plenty of thrills at Cic Saor final in Oriel Park
Oriel Park hosted the Corona/Paddy Power Cic Saor All Ireland Finals for the second year in a row on Saturday May 3 and blessed once again with excellent weather, the event was a great success for competitors and spectators alike, while the separate play area for children was a major attraction. GAA players from 19 counties in Ireland were joined by a number of competitors from other sports, including soccer and Ladies Football. The competition was keen throughout and went right to the wire before Down’s Clonduff GFC player Jason Brown claimed the title and the €5000 cash prize. With kicking areas confined to a number of colour coded zones the earlier elimination rounds themselves were very keenly contested at all stages. Skerries Town player Ian Tolan from Skerries opted for the soccer ball here and was unlucky to be elimi-

nated in a tight group, while Louth were well represented with Paddy Keenan, Declan Byrne, Darren Clarke and Derek Maguire taking part alongside local club members. Round two involved four groups of four and the elimination process continued until only four competitors remained. The standard of free kicking from the four remaining contestants was a sight to behold and the accuracy rate very high also with only a shot or two between the players.
The final itself was a marathon affair taking seven shots each before placings were confirmed as follows: Joint 3rd. Place - Barry O’Hare (Roche Emmets), and Stephen Connolly (Kildare). Second – Packie McMullen (Tyrone); Winner – Jason Brown (Down). Corona Cic Saor organisers, Adrian O’Donoghue, Oisin McConville and Jack O’Shea presented the winner with the Corona Crystal Trophy Award. Adrian O’Donoghue
thanked all the clubs and players who participated, along with the stewards, sponsors and anyone who helped out on the day. The 2015 Cic Saor All Ireland Competition is certain to prove just as competitive and exciting as the previous three events. It seems likely that the Corona / Paddy Power Cic Saor was in for the long haul having grown in prestige and popularity over the past years and becoming a big hit with players from different codes all over the country.
Exhibition to celebrate Louth’s cycling history
The County Museum, Dundalk is playing it’s part in Dundalk’s Giro d’Italia celebrations with a special exhibition focusing on Louth’s proud cycling history. The ‘From Hero 2 Giro’ exhibition will have it’s official opening on Thursday night, May 8 and will then open to the public the following day to coincide with the
Giro Big Start in Belfast on Friday May 9. The exhibition will feature memorabilia of local, national and international importance, all of which emphasises the huge importance of cycling to the region, according to County Museum Curator, Brian Walsh. “Dundalk and Louth today
plays a major role in the sport of cycling. However, that is nothing new as for almost a century, this region has had a central role in the sport. From Hero 2 Giro’ opens in the County Museum, Dundalk from Friday, May 9. For further information, contact the Museum at 042 9327056.
Dundalk TC take action on damage to 700 year old church
Efforts will be made to protect heritage sites
Efforts are being made to combat anti-social behavior which is undermining the work of tidy towns and damaging heritage sites in Dundalk town. Dundalk Town Council is working with an Gardai Síochána to prevent anti social behavior in the recently revived Castletown graveyard and other public amenities. Last week it came to light that some of the headstones and a wall of the 700
year old church was damaged. “Dundalk Town Council is aware of the use of that graveyard for antisocial activates and it works closely with An Garda Síochána to limit the risk of such anti-social behavior.” “This amenity in particular has benefited significantly for the work of the Tidy Towns Group and it is now attracting more visitors. However, antisocial behavior in this amenity
and in other parks around Dundalk is presenting serious issues for visitors to such amenities and is completely undermining the efforts of stakeholders to maintain and improve these local amenities. “Such anti-social behavior also reduces the attraction of these amenities with consequent implications for the area generally”, said a representative from Dundalk Town Council.

Carnation Theatre in conjunction with Create Louth is set to perform a specially developed play to six communities of older people in Co Louth. The new play has been written and designed to be performed in senior citizens clubs, small arts centres, day care centres, and nursing homes. Through the characters of Nell and best friend Rita life experiences are explored by way of a bus trip. The duo have a ritual: each year they take a bus trip to Balbriggan. On the journey, a whole life is lived and loved, from school days to the coming of free travel. As the stop-bell on the bus sounds, a special time in their lives is played out. The conductor, complete with ticket machine, keeps everything in order
while handing out tickets. Nell and Rita remember people who have lived along the route, as well as the shops, pubs, and all the characters. Using soundscapes and sets, comedy, music and drama, Fuss on The Buss is journey through memory, with laughs and tears along the way. “Drama and music have the capacity to inspire further creativity, and have the ability to prompt recollections and reminiscences of days gone by. Both these properties are in evidence in this production and we are looking forward bringing the show to a wide cross section of older people in Louth” said Brian Harten, Louth County Arts Officer The plays are set to be performed throughout the month of May.
