Sinead is selected for the trip of a lifetime

By Niamh Kirk

ONLY a matter of weeks after Louth was painted pink to welcome the Giro d’Italia, the county has turned a definite shade of green on the political front after Sinn Fein emerged as the real winners in the local elections. The party fielded a total of 11 candidates and came within a whisker of getting all elected, with ten winning seats on the new council while JJ Quigley just missed out by two votes. Independent candidate Maeve Yore also had reason to celebrate after causing one of the surprises of the election when she comfortably picked up a seat in Dundalk South. The other feature of the election was the fact that

Cara Cancer Support Centre officially opened By Paul Byrne

The Cara Cancer Support Centre officially opened their doors to the public last Friday as they welcomed the first of what they hope will be many visitors to their relaxing new premises. The new centre is located in 7 Williamson Place, Dundalk, and will be open between 10am and 4pm on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. It will also open on a Wednesday evening. The idea for the centre came about over a year ago when a group of people who had all been affected in some way by cancer decided that they wanted to try and offer the people of the local community the chance to avail of support here on their doorstep. Claire Byrne who is on the Cara Cancer Support Centre committee spoke of her delight at finally seeing the doors open to the public. “We are thrilled with our new centre and hope many, many people will

benefit over the coming years. It’s very exciting for Cara to be able to bring much needed support to people with cancer”, stated Claire. “Family members and carers also experience a difficult time where visits to professors, consultants and members of the medical field in general can be overwhelming. It is good to be able to relate to other survivors and speak in layman’s terms about what you are going through”, she added. Anna Brennan who is also on the committee thanked everybody who had helped Cara get ready for the opening insisting that all the hard work thus far to get to this point had been worth it. “We’ve come a long way in a year and it just shows you that if you put your mind to something you can achieve anything you want to. We had a lovely night here last Wednesday evening with all the hospice

received during her own cancer battle and said shelooked forward to helping others through

Illegal tobacco factory uncovered By Niamh Kirk

What is understood to be the first major illegal tobacco factory in Ireland has been uncovered in North County Louth. Revenue and Gardai discovered almost three tonnes of tobacco in a house at Proleek, Ravensdale. Gardai described it as a cottage style operation. Gardaí from Dundalk, Garda Regional Support Units and officers from Revenues Customs Service took part in the early morning raid on the rural property. A number of other items were also recovered including empty tobacco pouches, equipment for sealing the pouches and boxes of

cigarettes. It was not just counterfeit tobacco that was found but alcohol too as Gardai also found alcohol labels and 60 litres of what appears to be un-distilled alcohol. The illegal operation had sourced and stocked three tonnes or €1.2m worth of tobacco. Tobacco is one of the most highly taxed items in with €7.20 out of a

€9.50 pack of cigarettes or tobacco going to the state. This haul stood to deny the state coffers €1m in taxes. Ireland is the most expensive county to buy cigarettes in Europe and critics of the current system suggest that the comparatively high prices and low penalties makes Ireland a magnet for smuggling and makes for a lucra-

tive black market. The intelligence-led, joint operation between Revenue’s Customs Service and An Garda Síochána, 8720 cigarettes (‘L&M’ and ‘Excellence’ brands), counterfeit ‘Amber Leaf’ and ‘Flandia’ pouches and Dutch tax stamps were also seized. Two people were questioned and investigations are continuing.

Creative students Clothes swap to raise vital funds showcase their talents at DkIT By Niamh Kirk

THE Section of Creative Media in the Dundalk Institute of Technology returns with its end of year showcase, Fís 2014, in the recently renovated Carroll’s Building on Thursday June 5. Featuring completely new and original work ranging from film to interactive installations and games, Fís 2014 examines a wide range of ideas reflecting on the nature of art, technology and media forms. Exciting new works such as Lemuria: The Lost Land, Caecus, and Perceptune allow visitors to explore sensory awareness in new ways. SCIO: Connecting the Emigration Generation captures current patterns of migration and features a phone app that allows users abroad to contribute and interact with local visitors. Also launching will be a new arcade game, a programme that creates art from users’ bicycle peddling and an interactive website to support young victims of cyber-bullying. Visitors can also watch new films exploring celebrity culture, PTSD, superheroes and fatherhood. Two documentaries will also premiere on

Wednesday night. Tonn Nua? features interviews with industry experts about the exciting ‘new wave’ in Irish cinema while Player Character explores how users engage with the immensely popular yet brutally violent video game Grand Theft Auto V. Music is central to Lush, a film blurring the line between reality and fiction which questions the benefits of teen pop star fame, while A Father’s Song examines the link between music and memory. The work on show will highlight the relevant and diverse skills that students of creative media & film acquire over the course of their studies at DKIT. The students showcasing work are graduating from four main programmes: the BA/BA (Hons) in Communications in Creative Multimedia & the BA/ BA (Hons) in Video and Film Production. Fís 2014 is open to all, and will be launched at 6 pm in the Carroll’s Building on Wednesday 4th June and will be open to the public from Noon until 9pm on Thursday.

A great opportunity for the fashionably frustrated is taking place this June 15 in the Crowne Plaza to help raise funds for the Neo Natal unit in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. A fashion swap, Gok Won style, is taking place complete with makeovers, raffles, spot prizes and more. Noelle is a mother of three whose daughter Isabelle was born only a few weeks ago. After two incident-free pregnancies, Noelle got quite a shock when Isabella needed to be taken to the Neo Natal Unit

after being born. The staff there were incredibly supportive and caring to the new mother and daughter and Noelle was keen to repay their kindness. The Neo Natal unit have Oxygen Saturation Monitors at the top of their wish list of equipment and with the unforgiving budgets Noelle decided that she would step in to raise funds to buy them. She is aiming to get two and each cost €1,100. The idea of a fashion swap was inspired by Noelle’s experience of her changing body during pregnancy. “Nothing fitted me properly

anymore and when I was going back to work I had nothing to wear. Your size changes and your shape, it can be a big expense to start buying new clothes to fit your new body shape so I thought to myself that a swap would be a good, inexpensive way for people who have things that maybe don’t suit them or fit them anymore to swap them for things that do, all while raising the funds for the unit,” said Noelle. “It’s also a great girls day out, there will be refreshments, and makeovers and swapping clothes,” said Noelle. The swap is simple, you leave in up

to five items when you register to attend, the clothes are then organised into sizes and when you arrive on the day you get a ticket for as many items as you gave in. “ Maternity wear would be great to bring too,” she added. Bring smart casual or occasional wear, which is clean and pressed. Registration takes place in the Marshes Shopping Centre from Thursday June 12 from 5pm to 8pm, Friday June 13, from 4pm to 8pm and June 14 from Noon to 5pm. It costs €20 to register and every penny raised through registration goes towards buying the equipment.

—this week’s answers—

in Brief

Creative Spark was a hub of artistic flare and family fun for Ireland’s National Drawing Day as it hosted a series of drawing lessons for both young and with kids in particular treated to an afternoon of arts. Shauna Swords and Susan Farrelly welcomed groups of children and guided them through the lesson with everyone thrilled with the results. Adults were welcomed to try the new printing studio and fun print techniques guided by Constance Short, Heather Cassidy and Mel Bradley. The day finished with a life drawing session with a difference at 7pm - Burlesque Sketch had models dressed in fun costumes to suit a particular theme, with a decorated stage-set. National Drawing Day is a nationwide event celebrating its tenth year held in conjunction with galleries, museums as well as cultural hubs and arts centres. The aim of the day is to provide an ideal opportunity to encourage people to try their hand at drawing and sketching under the guidance of professional tutors who help unlock artistic talent. xxxxxxx

L p A man who pleaded guilty to a charge of drink driving I was disqualified from w driving for two years at L N Dundalk District Court.

Drink driving

Peter McGuigan of Bavan, Omeath, was t stopped by Gardai at D Station Road, Omeath on a December 7, 2013, and a i sample taken showed he was over the limit. The court heard that the 26-year-old, who lives with his partner and young child, is aware of the consequences of his actions. Judge William Hamill imposed a €200 fine and two year ban, postponed to November 21.

Found with knife and screwdriver on separate occasions A MAN who was found with a knife on one occasion and a sharply pointed screwdriver on another would benefit from the support of the Probation Service according to his barrister. Stan Domadej of 28 St Brigid’s Tce, Dundalk, who faced a number of charges when he appeared at Dundalk District Court, had the case against him adjourned to seek medical reports from

his doctor. The court heard that on October 24 last year, he was discovered at the entrance of a building at the Market Square rolling a cannabis joint and when searched he was found to have a knife with a 2.5 inch blade. He became abusive and threatening to Gardai. On November 13, 2013, he was arrested at St Helena after Gardai received re-

ports of a person at Realt na Mara school. When Gardai checked the schoolyard they came across the defendant but they received no response when he was asked to leave. He refused to give his details and when searched he was found to have a sharply pointed screwdriver. He also had a schoolbag full of pebbles. Barrister, Irene Sands

stated that her client had been voluntarily detained in St Brigids, Ardee, but was discharged. She continued to point out that Mr Domadej is currently not seeing anyone and is not on medication, while Ms Sands suggested that intervention would be to his benefit. Judge William Hamill stated that he was baffled by care in the community as he

stated: “One of the facets of the illness is that you think there is nothing wrong with you and when you are back out in the community you don’t take medication.” After it was explained that Mr Domadej’s doctor had said he didn’t need to take medication, Judge Hamill adjourned the case for a week to seek evidence of this.

A ‘Sleeping Giant in Dundalk Town centre is set to be awakened By Niamh Kirk

A new manger has been appointed to An Tain Arts Centre and is planning a spectacular revival of arts in Dundalk town centre. Paul Hayes is the new appointee and is highly involved in arts and theatre in the North East. His vision for the centre is to see it develop into a thriving hub for arts and culture with com-

munity at its heart. He described the Tain centre, which includes a large and smaller theatre, a gallery space and a bar, as a sleeping giant and said that he is keen to take on this ‘huge project.’ In its revival the Tain centre will be a major boost to the cultural quarter of Dundalk. “As an arts centre it is often thought of as a theatre but there is

much more, the plan is to get it going on weekly bases and see the community use all the facilities,” said Mr Hayes. The new manager says he has an open door policy and is looking for any groups who want to be on the main or smaller stages or use the gallery to get in touch. “There are number of prospective partners we have identified

and there is a plenty of culture in Dundalk but this only works well if the town embrace it,” he added. “Overall I’d like to see a thriving arts centre with community at its heart. While we will have the national touring shows, I feel very strongly that the centre needs to have a strong sense of Dundalk and of its environment. We need to put on things

that will appeal specifically to the area.” A rebrand and upgrading of the programme of events is planned and is expected to be rolled out within three months. It is hoped that as well as the main stage hosting some major shows, the smaller stage will offer a platform for more experimental shows and the gallery and other flexible spaces will en-

tice start-up and smaller or niche groups. “I’m looking for anyone really, groups who are interested in being on the big or small stage and artists. “I have an open door policy so people can call into the Tain Centre”, said Paul The temporary email address for the new theatre manager is antaindirectoir@hotmail. com .

Lisa helps Ireland to win bronze medal By Niamh Kirk

LISA O’Hagan was part of a strong Ladies Irish Fly Fishing team which finished third in Llyn Trawsfynydd in North Wales last week. The 23-year-old from the Racecourse Road in Dundalk was part of a 12-strong team that included her nine Irish

teammates as well as Dundalk men Hubert Smith who is the team coach and Mick McShane, the team’s official team fly tyer. Lisa has been fishing for most of her life developing a love for the sport thanks to her father Freddie who alongside her and her sister Orlaith are all

members of the Dundalk and District Brown Trout Anglers Club. According to avid fisherman Freddie it was a very proud moment watching on as his daughter represented Ireland. “The whole team did fantastic and put in a great effort. It was very close all day with Eng-

land Scotland and Wales and Ireland eventually finished third ahead of Wales thanks to catching the heaviest fish of the day”, remarked Freddie. “Lisa is delighted with her bronze medal and it was a great experience for her to take part in a competition with such quality anglers. She has been fishing ever since she was old enough to hold a rod and she has come a long way since she first started”, stated Freddie. Lisa is a member of

the local Brown Trout Anglers Club and has been coached by Matt Campbell who is well known in local circles for developing young talent in the area. Cher McCrave a daughter of Dundalk man Tony McCrave was also a part of the bronze medal winning Irish team. It’s a busy period for the Brown Trout Anglers Club with preparations underway for July’s World Youth Fly fishing Championships which take place in Poland this year.

Man fined for causing damage to car park door

A man who admitted causing damage to the shutter door of a car park was fined a total of €1,600 at Dundalk District Court. Frank Brassil of Main St, Collon, pleaded guilty to

charges of criminal damage, no insurance and failing to give appropriate information, arising out of the incident at Tain Court, Bridge St on June 21, 2012. On that day his vehicle

had caused €636.50 worth of damage to the roller shutter door of an underground car park at Tain Court, Bridge St on June 21, 2012. He also pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to provide informa-

tion on the driver who was not insured at the time. Mr Brassil was collecting a vehicle that he had purchased from a woman living in the complex, which he later sold for scrap.

At a previous sitting of the court, Judge William Hamill noted that the defendant’s plea of mitigation didn’t add up and adjourned the case to allow time to back up the claims he was mak-

ing. Judge Hamill imposed a fine of €800 on each of two charges, while taking the third into account. The 31-year-old self-employed man paid the compensation in full.

Man had little memory of assault

A member of the Defence Forces who “took the initiative” when he believed a row was about to break out pleaded guilty to an assault charge at Dundalk District Court. It was stated that Shane O’Brien of 65 Slieve Foy Park, Muirhevnamor, Dundalk, had little memory of the incident which occurred on December 29, 2010, due to drink. The court heard that on that date, the victim

felt a bang to the head and was kicked after he fell to the ground. He suffered superficial grazes and was tender over the jawbone. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client had little memory of the incident due to drink, but that he had felt a row was going to break out so he took the initiative. The solicitor stated that Mr O’Brien, a married man with three children, had been a

member of the Defence Forces for 12 years with an exemplary record. He added that he had lost out on postings abroad due to the case and was awaiting potential promotion. He added that the defendant expressed his sorrow for a “hugely unfortunate drunken incident”. He asked Judge William Hamill not to deprive his client of his liberty or deal with the case in any way that would affect

his employment. The judge stated that he would have to take a serious view of a case where somebody was kicked on the head while on the ground, but also took into account the defendant’s approach to the case. The court heard that any prison sentence would lead to a discharge from the Army, as Judge Hamill adjourned the case until August 21 for a Community Service Report.

Eddie experiences military coup at first hand By Niamh Kirk

A Dundalk teacher who has returned from Thailand in the past few days has spoken of his experiences living through the military coup. Eddie Cranny travelled to Thailand in September to teach and was just north of Bangkok when marshal law was declared following the official coup. Eddie lives close enough to the city that he has been able to hear the fighting clearly, but felt safe. Shortly after his arrival there he heard rumours of unrest but after Christmas the situation deteriorated in the city. He kept a close eye on what was going on, and by the time he arrived in Bangkok the main violence

appeared to have died down, “It hadn’t gone away but it was contained. Everything was very pronounced, the colours, red shirts and yellow. It was very militaristic and the numbers are in the thousands,” he said. Bangkok had been the site of numerous anti-government protests which resulted in the previous prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra being ousted by the Thai courts. Ever since there have been regular demonstrations from both pro and anti government factions. These protests escalated which resulted in three deaths and 22 injuries in the past two weeks prompting the military to intervene. “You could hear the mayhem from the window and

gunshots,” he said speaking from outside the Thai capital not long after the coup was announced. “The numbers at the demonstrations were insane, hundreds of thousands. Bangkok has effectively been shut down, which if you know the size of the city seems almost impossible to fathom,” he said “Everything is closed, there is no doubt they must be losing millions if not billions from their economy over this,” he added. Eddie says he felt safe during the demonstrations and after the military took control, stationed away from the main blockades. But he previously lived close to the area where the main violent demonstra-

tions took place. Eddie, whose girlfriend is still in the city, says he is concerned that further down the line fighting could escalate. There were a few nervous days before Eddie was due to fly out of Bangkok on Sunday morning as previously when violence has broken out in the capital the airport was closed down. However, the unrest did not spread far outside the city and Eddie was able to make his flight Europe and then back to Ireland. In Thailand the current Acting Prime Minister Niwattumron Boonsongpaisan has said that elections are to be held August 3, until then the Military will keep the peace.

Five men arrested as suspect device found FIVE men have been arrested following the discovery of a suspected bomb on Sunday evening. The men, who range in age from their mid 50s to early 70s, were detained in Kilcurry during an operation as part of the ongoing investigations into dissident republican activity. The operation involved Gardai from the Special Detective Unit and the Crime and Security Unit, and it is believed that a number of vehicles were being stopped close to the Border by armed personnel when the men in question were detained and the suspect device uncovered.

“He was actually a surprise appointment at the time as nobody really expected him to get it”, notes Conor. But de Valera was determined that he was the right man for the job and insisted to his unsure ministerial colleagues that this was the right move. “His time as Minister for Finance was marked by some very tough budgets that had to be made due to the fuel crisis and one of the harshest winters on record in 1947. He met with resistance from department figures but he was convinced his unpopular decisions were a necessary evil” explains Conor. Conor who spent several weeks in the library’s of UCD and Trinity researching Aiken is proud to have been involved in such a comprehensive biography of Frank Aiken’s life and admits that he learnt a lot from the enjoyable experience.

C

Local councillor Conor Keelan has contributed a chapter to the eagerly awaited biography of Fianna Fail’s Frank Aiken, widely regarded as one of the most significant Irish politicians of the 20th Century and a TD for the Louth constituency for 50 years. According to Conor, who was recently elected to the new county council, it was a labour of love and a huge privilege to be asked to contribute to the book which will have it’s official launch next month in Dublin and is now available in all good bookshops. “I am privileged to be one of the contributors to this biography of Frank Aiken, someone I have always greatly admired. My chapter is number 6 entitled “Experiment or a New Departure?: Aiken in Fi-

nance: 1945-1948.” This focuses on Aiken’s time in the Finance portfolio and his views on economic policy. “I was invited to write a chapter by the editors of the book Bryce Evans and Stephen Garry about 18 months ago. I have always been a great admirer of Frank Aiken and although I was aware of the main aspects of his life it was a very interesting experience to trawl through the archives as I researched his time as Minister of Finance for my section of the book”, explained Conor. Following his military career, Aiken’s instrumental role was to be political: a Minister for Defence, Finance, and External Affairs over the course of the following decades; and it is during his time as Finance Minister which Conor focuses on.

 LOCAL ELECTIONS 2014 Late drama as Keelan takes seat in Dundalk-Carlingford T There was high drama late on Sunday evening in the Redeemer Hall as Fianna Fail’s Conor Keelan edged out Sinn Fein’s JJ Quigley for the sixth and final seat by just four votes following a full recount. The recount had been called by Sinn Fein when just two votes separated Keelan and Quigley after the 9th count. JJ Quigley’s agonising defeat proved to be the only sour

point for Sinn Fein who topped the poll in Dundalk-Carlingford thanks to Edel Corrigan’s strong showing. Her running mate Jim Loughran also claimed a seat coming in third after the seventh count. Experienced Fianna Fail councillor Peter Savage comfortably retained his seat in the council with 1239 votes. The Greenore man is a seasoned campaigner having first been elected to the

local authority back in 1974. He topped the poll last time out in 2009 and will return to the newly formed council alongside his running mate Conor Keelan. The Green Party’s Mark Deary has also been elected taking the 5th seat on Sunday evening following the 9th count. Mark was first elected on to Dundalk Town council in 2004 before being reelected in 2009 where he was also elected on to the county

man Eamon O’Boyle was unsuccessful in both the DundalkCarlingford and Dundalk South constituencies having run as an independent this time around. The former Fine Gael man was first elected to the town council in 2004 and was re-elected five years later. Independent councillor Jim Ryan who had been serving on both the town and County council also lost his seat. The Fr Murray Park man was first elected onto Dundalk Town Council in

1999 and Louth County Council in 2004. The final member of Louth County council to lose their seat was Fine Gael’s Martin Murnaghan. The Rathcor man had been a member of Louth County Council since June 2011 having been selected to succeed Terry Brennan following his election to the Seanad. Murnaghan’s running mate Colin Goss narrowly missed out having being in the shake up for most of the day.

McGeough leads the way as Ardee loses some big names By Paul Byrne

The final results of the Ardee local elections were eventually confirmed at 3pm on Monday afternoon after a full recount was requested from Independent candidate Hugh Conlon. Conlon who was eliminated late on Sunday evening

after the 15th count requested the recount but it proved futile as he failed to get a seat. Councillor Pearse McGeough, a native of Kilsaran, was first elected to Louth County Council in 2004 topping the poll with 1,425 first preference votes for the Ardee Electoral Area. In 2009 he was

re-elected to Louth County Council and elected to Ardee Town Council. He again topped the poll this time around with 1,569 votes to get elected on the first count. Pearce’s Sinn Fein running mate Tom Cunningham also claimed one of the six seats in

his first ever election. The Clogherhead man was put forward to contest the election in March and polled well claiming 1,107 first preference votes. Fine Gael also won two of the six seats with Colm Markey and Dolores Minogue following up election success from 2009. Togher

farmer Colm, a current Louth County Councillor, is a former Macra na Feirme president and was deemed elected after the 11th count having received 1,258 first preference votes. His running mate Dolores Minogue was elected to Ardee Town Council in 2009 and followed up that success by claim-

ing a seat in the newly reformed local authority. Fianna Fail councillor Liam Reilly will also take a seat in the new local authority having received 969 first preference votes. The St Mary’s College secondary school teacher was originally co-opted to Louth County Council in 2008. The final seat went to independent candidate Jim Tenanty who edged out Hugh Conlon by the

narrowest of margins. Jim, a former Mayor of Ardee, was part of the Ardee Town Council before putting himself up for the new local authority.

Long serving councillors Jim Lennon (FG), Fintan Malone (FF) and Finian McCoy (FG) were some of the big name casualties to lose their seats.

Euro joy for Mairead

LOCAL MEP, Mairead McGuinness, was celebrating on Tuesday afternoon after becoming the second candidate elected in the Midlands North West Area of the European elections. The Ardee native retained her seat after she reached the quota on the fifth count. There was no joy for two other local candidates with Mark Dearey (9,520) and Mark Fitzsimons (2,424) eliminated on the first count.

party representatives. The situation remained much the same for five more counts with the lowest polling candidates excluded during the successive rounds. Disappointment was palpable as a number of town and county councillors failed to retain their seats, with Oliver Morgan, Sean Bellew, Linus English, and Eamonn O’Boyle not elected to the newlook council. It was not until the tenth count that saw the remaining seats filled with all but new comer Yore having previous

council experience. With Maeve Yore having taken the third seat, two Sinn Fein candidates, Cllr Kevin Meenan and Cllr Jennifer Green took the fourth and fifth while Fine Gael’s Maria Doyle and Green’s Marianne Butler took the two remaining seats respectively. The results indicate a positive shift in the level of female representation in the County which was not seen elsewhere. While only 26% of the candidates were women, they were all elected bucking a long standing trend of under represen-

tation. With the majority of the seven seats in the area taken by female representatives, Dundalk South is one of the most progressive constituencies nationally. Government parties did not fare well in Dundalk South, there were no Labour candidates running, but of the three Fine Gael candidates only one took a seat. Although independent candidates were also excluded in earlier rounds, the two Fine Gael candidates, Paddy Malone and Linus English were both decisively eliminated in the tenth round count.

Elected in Drogheda Area

The make up of the Louth County Council will be completed by the ten councillors elected in the Drogheda area. The successful candidates are as follows: Imelda Munster (SF), Paul Bell (Lab), Alan Anthony Cassidy (SF), Tommy Byrne (FF), Kevin Callan (FG), Oliver Tully (FG), Frank Godfrey (Ind), Riche Culhane (FG), Pio Smith (Lab) and Kenneth Flood (SF).

Louth goes from pink to green

Continued from Page 1 and bucking current national political trends. Sinn Fein made gains on top of their ground support with ten candidates elected to the 29 seats and topping the polls in all four Louth constituencies. They are now the dominant party in the local government, which previously was Fine Gael’s advantage when they had held eight at county level and two on Dundalk Town Council. The Government party did secure seven candidates but failed to makes gains on the additional seats. Fine Gael did not comfortably take their seats either, with no candidate being elected on first preferences and each gaining their places largely though transferred votes. Fianna Fail retained five seats, also not making gains on the six seats added to Louth Council since the dissolution of Dundalk Town Council. The support for the party which is increasingly regaining the confidence of the electorate was visible in Louth with Declan Breathnach retaking his seat with ease in the first count of Dundalk South. Independents lost out too with seven independents be-

cils, falling to three representatives in the new county body. Contrary to the national trend Labour suffered no losses in Louth with the Drogheda constituency retaining both councillors. The Greens succeeded in transferring their Dundalk Town votes to the Louth Council and now have two seats. With gender quotas introduced for the coming national election, female representation was under the spotlight. While little changed nationally in this regard, Louth doubled the number of female candidates in Louth County Council going from three to six. However,

only one of these was a government party candidate, the rest opposition and independent. Recounts were granted in both the Ardee and DundalkCarlingford areas as there was as few as one vote between candidates competing for final seats. Sinn Fein called for a recount in Dundalk North where JJ Quigley lost out on a seat by only two votes to no avail. Similarly in Mid-Louth, Independent Hugh Conlon who was denied a seat by 27 votes successfully called for a recount, but the numbers remained the same. Full results on pages 12 & 13

DkIT announces latest sporting link

Masakra ! Wróciliśmy pozytywnie zmęczeni. Kto byłby chętny na taką imprezę ? Klub Młodych ,,Pajęczyna” Edyta Szymanek

DkIT has further enhances is sporting reputation by linking up with another League of Ireland club, this time Drogheda Utd. DkIT President Denis Cummins and Drogheda United FC Chairman Jim Agnew announced the launch of a Soccer Scholarship Academy which will provide 3rd level scholarships to students of DkIT who also play for Drogheda United Football Club. The scheme is aimed at CAO candidates who wish to pursue a third level education whilst

Chair of DkIT Governing Body Andrew Griffith, Drogheda United Chairman Jim Agnew, Ireland Manager Martin O’Neill, DkIT Students Union Vice President Paddy O’Rourke, Drogheda United player Eric Foley, DkIT President Denis Cummins and DkIT Sports and Societies Officer Derek Crilly

simultaneously pursuing a professional soccer playing career at the highest level in Ireland. DkIT will offer a total of

four soccer scholarships each year to both Leaving Certificate students and mature students. A successful candidate’s

performance will be assessed annually, under both academic and soccer performance criteria, across the duration

of their academic programme. They will also assist as student ambassadors on college open days and in school recruitment initiatives as well as playing on the college teams. The scheme is timely given the purchase of the DkIT Sport facility, due to open in the coming months, where players can avail of the gym and facilities allowing them to continue with strength and conditioning training on campus. The partnership was further endorsed when

the DKIT logo was added to the back of the player’s shirts this season. The scholarship was launched at a FAI press conference, attended by the Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill, at Gannon Park in Malahide on Thursday May 22. Speaking at the launch Denis Cummins said “I am delighted the college is in a position to create opportunities for footballers to pursue their careers whilst fulfilling their academic potential.”

Launch of Dundalk Style Architectural poster By Paul Byrne

Dundalk Town Council and Dundalk Tidy Towns launched ‘The Dundalk Style’ Architecture Poster in the County Museum last week with the aim of helping promote Dundalk and showcase the beautifully designed buildings around the town. According to Willie Duffy, chairman of Dundalk Tidy Town’s the poster is designed to get people talking about the stunning

architecture around our town and to help increase footfall back into the town centre. “The whole idea came about after we were shortlisted for a Tidy Towns Tourism Award in 2012 along with nine other towns such as Killarney, Clonakilty and Westport. It was a huge honour and a big boost for the town of Dundalk. Judges from Tourism Ireland spent a few hours with us walking around town and they

were extremely impressed with the beautifully stylish buildings all around the town centre”, explained Willie. Louth Heritage Officer, Brendan McSharry picked up on the judges comments and noted that the architectural style of the buildings in Dundalk were actually admired and copied all around the country having been recognised and given the title ‘The Dundalk Style’ by the Irish builder magazine back in 1867.

These comments inspired Willie and the Tidy Towns committee to come together with Brendan McSharry, Peter McVeigh, Paddy Malone and many others to form a group called ‘Team Dundalk’ in order to try and somehow use this architecture to help promote tourism in the area. ‘The Dundalk Style’ architecture poster is available to buy in the County Museum and the Tourist Office.

Ardee Concert Band take part in programme to promote music

Ardee Concert Band has been taking part in a joint pilot project as part of a planned Out Reach Programme by the Royal Irish Academy of Music to promote music education. Bill Dowdall, Head of the Woodwind, Brass & Percussion Faculty at the RIAM visited Ardee’s band rooms in December to meet with committee members and also to see the senior band in action itself in rehearsal setting. On the night Bill, who is also the principal flute player with the National Symphony Orchestra, gave a 15 minute workshop tuition to the flautists of the senior band. He was very impressed by what he saw on the night and he has offered to provide the band’s members with top class tuition workshops by some of the finest tutors in Ireland free of charge. In February Colm Byrne of the National Symphony Orchestra had a workshop with 15 members who play trumpet within the band.

Event Guide The TLT Celebrates International Music Day

Friday 20th June

Free concert

Line up includes The Replays, Drogheda Orchestra Collective, Philipstown Youth Ensemble, The Two Tone Blues Band. Raffle on the night to win a pair of tickets to every show in the TLT for a year (worth over €3000). To guarantee your seat book early.(€1 booking fee) John Finucane with Grade 1 Clarinet Class

The second step of this project took place on Sunday May 25 with John Finucane, principal clarinet player with the RTE National Symphony Orchestra. John gave individual and small group tuition in Ardee’s own purpose built band rooms of the Bohemian Centre in Ardee. The clarinet tuition was available to all members, junior and senior, regardless of levels of competency on the clarinet.

In total, 25 clarinet players from the band benefited from John’s expertise and all agreed it was a fantastic experience to hear and be taught by one of the best clarinet players in Ireland. This was a great opportunity for all members to gain technique, advancement of skills and gain new knowledge on various instruments already being taught on a voluntary basis, throughout the band in the future.

This huge opportunity for the Bands status in the banding world can only bring the bands future from strength to strength for the years to come. This Outreach Programme will develop and lessons are planned on all of the other instruments of the band, recorder, oboe, saxophone, bassoon, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba and percussion in the future months of this very worthy project.

Lannleire GFC’s 50th anniversary Lannleire GFC are this year celebrating the 50th anniversary of the official opening of their playing grounds at Pairc Ui Mhuiri, Dunleer. The ground is named after Fr. Larry Murray, Parish priest of Dunleer (1938-1941). Fr Murray helped with the founding of Lannleire G.F.C. and will probably be best remembered for the large part he played in the success of the Louth minor football teams from 1934 to 1941,

both as chairman of the selection committee and as trainer. In that period the Louth minors figured in seven Leinster finals and three All-Ireland finals, with the 1940 All-Ireland victory over Mayo being Louth’s last success at this level. To mark the occasion the club are holding a couple of events next month, which coincides with the opening of Pairc Ui Mhuiri in June 1964.

At Ardee Golf Club on June 13 Lannleire will hold a Golf Classic which will also act as a fund raiser for the club and then the following night at The Grove House, a dinner dance will be held. Chairman Tommy Farrelly is hoping that all supporters and the community as a whole will support both events and from which a great weekend’s entertainment can be expected

DkIT students in The Spirit Store

The first annual final year showcase of students’ work on the BA Music and Audio Production will take place in the Spirit Store, Dundalk on Wednesday 28 May at 7.30pm. The first intake on this programme was in September 2011. Roll the clock on three years and we are about to witness impressive levels of Music Production ability from these students, something they have achieved through their dedication to the discipline and the refined application of their learning. The Spirit Store will play host to the presentation of the 20 final year projects. These students have been working with musicians across a wide variety of genres to create tracks with both artistic integrity and commercial appeal. Folk-Rock rubs shoulders with Hip Hop while Celtic Mysticism cosies up to Metal; one thing is for sure...it won’t be boring! This is a great opportunity to hear high-quality, original productions from future stars from both sides of the mixing desk. Doors open at 7.30pm and entry is free!

Duke Special back in town

Bay Utd celebrate

Duke Special’s Gramophone Club is back after a successful start to the event and he is set to play The Spirit Store again on Saturday May 31. Duke Special’s Gramophone Club is set to bring the time warp night back this May and June but this time there are prizes up for grabs for the best dressed. The Gramophone Club came about after a chance meeting with The Shellac Collective, a like-minded group of eccentrics who are passionate about 78rpm records from bygone times. Duke and the Shellacs started to appear at the same festivals and perform together on occasions. From here Duke decided to create the Irish arm of the Shellac Collective and so formed Duke Special’s Gramophone Club.

De La Salle Transition Year student Evin Quigley spent a week in Lourdes as part of the Armagh Diocesan Pilgrimage and he gives an account of what proved to be very worthwhile experience. On the morning of the 12th of May 2014, myself and a host of other people from the Archdiocese of Armagh headed out on a journey, not a very typical ‘holiday’ for us teenagers I must add, but in fact it was a pilgrimage to one of the holiest places in the Christian world, Lourdes. This very beautiful place, located in the southern region of France, is known famously as the place where our Lady of Lourdes, Mary, the mother of Jesus,

appeared to Bernadette Sousbirous on a total of 18 occasions. It would only take us about an hour to get to Belfast International Airport so we knew it wouldn’t be too long till we landed in France and would meet up with all the assisted pilgrims and the help, multiple priests, and of course

our new Archbishop Eamon Martin and Cardinal Seán Brady. After a fairly relaxed flight, we headed to the Hotel Jeanne D’Arc where our dinner was waiting for us. We were called for a quick meeting and were happy to find out that it was just a quick tour of the grotto along with a

nice little prayer. It was at this moment when I realised the magic the magic that this place had to offer; while we were praying, there was a moment, something nobody was able to explain, but soon as we began to pray everything stopped and it was so peaceful that you could hear a pin

drop, even though you the place was packed with about a thousand people at the time. It was just something that you can’t explain to anyone, and I think the only way you can understand is by going out and experiencing it yourself. It was a bit spooky, and this got to some of the girls a little

bit. On the Tuesday Morning we were assigned to Mass at the grotto at the nice and early time of half past eight local time, meaning we had to be up at half past six, and us losing an hour of sleep meant it was half five back home. I thought it was a very nice trip, consisting lots of various ceremonies, such as confession, anointing of the sick, stations of the cross, as well as a little party with the Irish Army when they landed. The candlelit procession was definitely one of the highlights of the trip, being able to see all the people from different countries and singing all the hymns. It was truly a great experience and I would easily go back.
