By Paul Byrne It was a weekend to remember for Fatima’s Linda Casey with a double celebration which started with the arrival of a granddaughter on Friday evening and ended with her son Darren dancing his way to victory on Sky’s ‘Got to Dance’ on Sunday night. Darren who is a member of dance sensations ‘Prodijig’ wowed the judges at London’s Olympia Theatre on Sunday night as his group danced their way to the trophy and a first prize of £250,000. Darren’s mother Linda who travelled to London for the final described the atmosphere as ‘electric’ for the final. “I was right up the front for the final and the reaction Prodijig got from the crowd was absolutely electric. There was mayhem in the arena when they finished and they blew

everybody away on the night.” recalled an ecstatic Linda. “I was shaking with excitement when Davina McCall was about to announce the winner

and when she called out Prodijig’s name I just went crazy. I went up on the stage and made a bee-line for Darren and he was buzzing. He gave me a big hug

and just kept on saying ‘We won, we won, we did it Mam’. He was sobbing on my shoulder with happiness. It was an unforgettable experience. “This really has been a weekend I’ll never ever forget as my daughter Leanda gave birth to a beautiful baby girl called Tess on Friday evening. Leanda and Darren would be very close and she said it was like going through labour again on Sunday night Continued Page 14

Divided loyalties in McEneaney household

By Eunan Whyte It will be very much a case of divided loyalties in the McEneaney household in Blackrock this weekend as father and son go head-tohead when Louth take on Monaghan in the National Football League. Normally a house that is filled with talk of GAA matters, members of the clan are unusually silent on the topic this week as Monaghan manager, Eamonn, is plotting the downfall of a Louth squad that contains his son, Jim. For Jim, recognised as one of Louth’s brightest young talents, it is an unusual situation, and while he admits there is plenty of banter during the week, it is a matter of trying to concentrate on the match as normal. “There is a bit of craic with people coming in to the house and it does feel a bit odd, but you just have to go with it but make sure you Continued Page 18

Free car parking not the solution - Pentony A motion from Cllr Eamonn O’Boyle calling for free car parking in Dundalk on one Saturday per month would be a ‘disaster’ according to Town Clerk Frank Pentony. “Ardee Town Council tried this at Christmas and it was an absolute disaster” claimed Mr Pentony. People were parking

from 9am and staying until six meaning there was no turnover of customers. “The situation here is that we simply cannot afford to introduce free car parking. Our figures for 2011 were down €300,000 and if I showed you the arrears in rates from businesses so far this year they

would blow you away “I would have a view that we should be organising events in Market Square to get people into town. Maybe we could introduce reduced pay parking rates on a trial basis for bank holiday weekends but that would be the best we could do for now.

Cllr O’Boyle had earlier claimed that free pay parking once a month would stimulate more activity back into the town centre and perhaps encourage people from the North of Ireland to come into Dundalk and make a day out of it. Senior Executive Officer

David Storey echoed the town clerk’s sentiments saying “If we have to take a hit on payparking we will simply have to identify cuts in other services to make up the deficit. We as a council have already agreed to this year’s budget figures so I don’t see how we can change them now” he explained.

World Book Day at Bay Estate NS By Niamh Kirk

Bay Estate National School celebrated World Book Day in style last week with a day of activities and readings.

They invited the older students to come to school dressed as their favourite literary characters and the junior infants to come to the day long PJ party. The teachers getting involved in the fun too. The school went to great effort to encompass all aspects that the international celebration of literature. As well as reading from children’s classics by the teachers the students from senior classes went into the Junior classes to read passages from their favourite books. They also ran an art competition asking students to illustrate a cover for a book they like. Most of the children are still big readers and name authors like Roal Dahl, Marita Connor

McKenna and JK Rowling among their favourite authors. With the free book voucher that all the children received they can use in any of Dundalk’s book stores they can get even more of their favourite authors.

Bay Estate NS is planning opening their new state-of-the-art library at the end of the month. Both teachers and members of the Parents and Friends Committee have been busy in the lead up to the grand opening decorating the area and

cataloguing the some 5000 plus books that the library will hold. The school had an incredible initiative’s on World Book Day that will see their newly refurbished library full to the rafters. Children were asked to bring

in one book or more that they thought others might like to read too and donate it to the school library. Their gift to the school will be remembered for generations as their names are recorded on a special stamp in each book.

Dundalk FC General Manager Paul Johnston has called on people to “get behind the club” ahead of their first home game of the season, after they announced reduced match ticket prices which makes them the best value adult ticket in the Airtricity League Premier Division. Seán McCaffrey began his reign as manager with a good point against Monaghan United at Gortakeegan at the weekend, and now his side are preparing for their first outing of the campaign at Oriel Park as they welcome St Patrick’s Athletic on Friday night at 7.45pm. And Johnston wants the town to row in behind a “new and exciting era”, with Sean McCaffrey bringing some of the best young players in the country to the club in the off-season. Some of those players are also products of our own town, with Stephen McDonnell, the vicecaptain this year, and

Mark Griffin, who is on the way back from injury, products of the Dundalk Schoolboys’ League and two of the most exciting young players in the country at the moment. To help encourage people to come up to watch the games, the club has decided to abolish the Category pricing system that has been in place over the past two years. Instead, fans will be able to watch top-flight football from the Ground for just €10 throughout the season, with the Stand priced at €15. “We recognise the financial difficulties individuals and families are facing and we have tried to price the games as affordable as possible,” Johnston said. “It is a brave move by the club and now we need the footballing public of Dundalk and the greater area to get behind this so we can continue to offer this pricing and value for money. “We have continued to

receive fantastic support from our loyal fans – the manager and players have all remarked how struck they were by the magnificent support they received in Monaghan.

“But we need everyone who has an interest in football in this town to come to Oriel Park and help push the club forward. “The more people that

come to Oriel Park, the more we will be able to support Seán in strengthening his squad. That’s the simple maths of it”, added Paul.

Prefabs will be replaced By Niamh Kirk

Three schools in Dundalk will finally have their prefabs replaced under the Government’s initiative to upgrade schools. The Government will offer grants to over 200 schools to build permanent classrooms. St Malachy’s Girls’ and Boy’s national school as well as St Vincent’s Secondary School are to benefit from some of the €35 million that is being invested nationally this year. The Programme for Government contains a com-

mitment to reduce the reliance on rented prefabs in schools. This new initiative could result in savings of approximately €5million every year on the rental of the prefabs that host 600 students in these schools in the coming year and will result in the creation of an estimated 700 direct and 140 indirect jobs. Ardaghy NS, Omeath, and Dunleer NS are also to benefit from scheme. Minister for Education & Skills, Ruairi Quinn T.D announced the funding last week. The maximum grant offered is

€110k per classroom and this must cover all fees, local authority contributions and site works. There are limitations in the scheme; to qualify for the grant a school must show that they have been using prefabs for a minimum period. They must also have a big enough site to accommodate the prefab while the permanent structure is being built. Also if the building proposal is granted it nullifies any previous application for an extension as it will have been automatically deemed to have been addressed.

A group of Transition Year students from St. Mary’s College, Dundalk are partaking in a project ‘One Good Idea’ hosted by Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). The students are: The students involved are Ciaran Lennon, Avenue Rd; Keenan Copas, Avenue Road; Christopher Kellett, Lower Point Road; and Aaron Lally, St. Mary’s Road and they have chosen the dimension of water conservation as their project. Their primary aim is to conserve water levels in the Dundalk area in light of media coverage

concerning a loss of water through the piping system. The students also hope to achieve primary school student’s awareness of water conservation. Their project involved the installation of ‘Uisce Bagga’ in all toilets in five participating primary schools in the town. The bags have been installed in the toilet cisterns and will conserve one litre of water per flush. The project estimates to conserve approximately 250,000 litres of water per academic year. The project could not have occurred without the help and sup-

port of Dundalk Tidy Towns Committee and the team wish to especially thank Willie Duffy. The participating schools include CBS Primary, Friary Boys, Friary Girls, Castletown Girls National School and De La Salle Primary. Their involvement and keen participation is immensely appreciated. A team member Keenan Copas who is a budding singer songwriter has written and composed a song encouraging water awareness, which can be viewed on You Tube by searching ‘Washed Up Marist’ by Keenan Copas.

Louth County Council last week called on householders to register to pay the Household Charge. In a statement last week the local government reminded people of the ‘myriad of services provided by your local authority including Emergency Services provided by our Fire and Rescue Service to Social Housing, Planning Services, Road maintenance and improvements.’ “Achieving this goal requires resources. A key element of these resources is the Household charge – a charge that we all as residential property owners are liable to pay before 31st March 2012 in order that we can continue to avail of the standard of service and environment we do in County Louth.” However opponents to the Household charge have hit back at the call to register and pay before the end of the month. Tomas

Sharkey Sinn Fein Councillor said “As member of the county council I have had no indication of any projects that are planned using funds from the Household charge. “The Local Government Fund funds local councils and council management would be well minded to realise that the Household Charge is for the purpose of bailing out banks and it is unfortunate that local public servants have been dragged into one of the biggest rip-off’s of our time. “The political leadership of the council had opposed the Household charge; The County Council Members passed a motion to oppose the charge during the Summer.” A statement from the national campaign on the matter said “Not one cent will be used to improve services such as health and education. The money will be used to bail out the bankers and the specu-

lators. By taking money out of the pockets of ordinary people they will depress demand for goods and services and make the crisis worse, not better. A spokesman for the Council said “We have had a steady flow of people inquiring about it – a lot of people are saying that they are not going to pay until they have to but we are reminding people that they need to meet their statutory requirements. “We are all interested and working for the same objectives; that we have adequate services and we are providing efficient and quality leadership to the people Louth.” Officials in the Office of the Household Charge stated that while the household charges are being collected centrally they asserted that 100% of the fund swould be redistributed to the local government.

Gardai taking zero tolerance approach during Rag Week By Niamh Kirk

In previous years Residents Associations in the immediate area of the college have complained about drunkenness in public areas and the poor conditions that the area has been left in and recently released a statement calling for moderation during this year’s revelries. John Temple Chairperson of College Manor called on students “to act responsibly and to respect the environment and local community, remembering that there are families and small children living

around the area also.” While some students are to blame for the increase in disorder and disruption in some areas they have likewise become targets for ‘party prowlers’ who access student properties aiming to steal from them. The Community Garda Unit advised on security of the properties and the dangers of party prowlers who seek access to parties with a view to stealing valuables in the lead up to RAG week. Local gardai say that they appreciate the difficulties that families who live in areas that are heavily

populated with students face during RAG week and will be taking a zero tolerance approach to any infractions of the law by students. In the lead up to Raise and Give Week a local gardai representatives detailed the efforts that are being made in order to ensure that the week goes off without disturbances. This year gardai are to meet with residents associations and the students unions before RAG week to take preventative measures on public order. As well as engaging with the residents and students in the lead up to RAG week.

US Ambassador visits Narrow Water The US Ambassador to Ireland, Dan Rooney, visited the site of a proposed new bridge across Carlingford Lough linking counties Louth and Down on Wednesday last. The proposed bridge will connect Cornamucklagh near Omeath, Co Louth with Narrow Water and Dromore near Warrenpoint, Co Down. Speaking afterwards, Ambassador Rooney said: “The proposed bridge at Narrow Water is the sort of cross-border, inter-community project that both literally and figuratively will bring people together. I wish this project all the best.” Conn Murray, County Manager, Louth Local Authorities, underlined the benefits the bridge

would bring. “We are obviously very conscious that this is a very challenging economic environment in which to be promoting this type of infrastructure project but there is still a compelling case for this bridge on several levels”, he stated. Fáilte Ireland has welcomed the proposed development of a bridge across the Newry River at Narrow Water. The authority’s board members unanimously endorsed the development at a meeting on Wednesday February 29 saying it “will deliver significant benefits for tourism in the region”. Planning applications in respect of Narrow Water Bridge are currently

before An Bord Pleanála as a strategic infrastructure development and the Department of Environment/Planning Northern Ireland. Funding for the project is being sought under the INTERREG IVA Programme for Northern Ireland, the Border Region of Ireland and Western Artist’s impression of the proposed new bridge Scotland. This European Union supported Structural Funds Programme seeks to address the economic and social problems which result from the existence of borders. Louth County Council has committed funding to continue the detailed design and planning process with a view to the bridge project being completed by the end of 2015.

Woman has case dismissed

A prosecution against a motorist for having an unregistered Mercedes car in the state was dismissed. The case brought by the Revenue Commissioners was estimated to last 20 minutes, but ran for over two hours at Dundalk Court on Thursday. Sarah McGrath (33) with an address given at 6, Seacrest Manor, Lower Point Road, said she was living at 17 The Crescent, Crossmaglen and claimed was exempt from the regulations. Judge William Hamill after hearing the evidence said he had a doubt, but refused an application for her costs by her barrister. The case arose after Miss McGrath was stopped at 9.15a.m at a VRT checkpoint mounted by Customs and Excise Officers at Point Road on August 17, 2010. She gave an address at 40, Dundalk Road, Crossmaglen, and admitted owning the Mercedes from February that year. The prosecuting officer said that he ascertained the defendant’s husband claimed Jobseekers allowance at 6, Seacrest Manor for the family for a time, and they were listed there on the registered of electors. The officer also said that he saw the car 30 to 40 times at 6, Seacrest Manor between February and August 2010. When he asked her to confirm her

name and address, the defendant gave 6, Seacrest Manor, and stated was living there three years. He served a forfeiture notice on her. She would have been required to pay a fine of over €9,600 for the release of the vehicle. In evidence, the defendant said she had a food shop in Newry at the time of the offence, and paid taxes in relation to it in Northern Ireland. She lived with her uncle and aunt at 40, Dundalk Road, Crossmaglen when she was stopped, but the officers pointed down the Point Road and said they wanted that address. She left Seacrest Manor after Christmas 2009.She lived there after she and her husband married. After moving out she still had child care duties at Seacrest Manor, but lived with her parents in Crossmaglen, bar for the time she stayed with her uncle and aunt. That was when room was being made for her kids at her parents’ house. She bought the car for €7,000 in February 2010 in Warrenpoint after being stopped by the Customs in the Northern for having a southern vehicle. She said she was “floored” by the sum she was asked to pay for the return of the car. She tendered documents to prove she lived in Crossmaglen.

Dundalk triathletes Bryan McCrystal, Liam Dolan and Owen Martin travelled to Abu Dhabi last weekend to compete in the International Long Course Triathlon where they made a huge impact. Bryan finished 16th overall against the world’s elite, while Liam won his category, and Owen was third in his age-group. The race featured a 3km swim, 200km cycle, which included laps of the infamous Yas Marina Formula 1 motor racing circuit and finally a 20km run in Abu Dhabi City Centre. The race was run in 30oC+ temperatures in the United Arab Emirates desert. While Dolan and Martin were racing in the amateur, McCrystal was racing in a fiercely competitive professional field. With a $50,000 prize cheque for the winner, all the world’s best triathletes were towing the start line. McCrystal had an excellent race to finish in 16th position overall. Dolan put in the fastest amateur run of the day to move up to third, winning his age group in the process and finishing 24th overall includ-

ing the professionals. Martin also had a blistering run, to move up to third in his age group, 11th amateur and to finish just outside the top 30 overall. This bodes well for the rest of Martin’s season as he attempts to qualify for the Ironman World Championships by competing in the German Ironman race in July. Dolan has already qualified for this year’s world championships in Hawaii and will focus on some smaller races

over the summer. Bryan McCrystal’s next big event is the Lanzarote Ironman this coming May. Giving his incredible biking skills the course on the volcanic island should suit him as it features almost 2,000ms of vertical gain. This will be his first attempt at the distance, but his result in Abu Dhabi will have given him the confidence to know that he can excel at the longer distances.

The fallout from the new road layout at Stapleton Place continued at last week’s Dundalk Town Council meeting with one councillor saying the road had been ‘butchered’. Cllr Maria Doyle who brought forward the motion described the new layout as disastrous and again questioned why the residents had not been informed about the works beforehand. “Ideally I would ask for these roadworks to be undone as its obvious there are safety issues involved here. If the work can’t be undone I hope the engineers will at least speak to the residents and listen to their concerns” she urged. Cllr Eamonn O’Boyle echoed these sentiments claiming that the “area has become dangerous” while questioning why the engineers were so intent with installing a cycle lane while at the same time ignoring the massive potholes which have plagued the road for years. Cllr Sean Bellew was also unhappy with the new road layout on Stapleton Place saying “The response from everybody I’ve talked to about this has been absolutely negative. This was a fine Victorian Road that has been here since 1834 and it has

been totally butchered. The road has never been in a worse state.” he stated. Councillors Jim Ryan and Martin Bellew also spoke about the new layout on Stapleton place saying they “were in a state of shock” when they seen what had happened to the road. Responding to the councillors’ concerns, town engineer Catherine Duff blamed short notice from the Department of Transport for the lack of consultation. “We got funding for this project from the Department of Transport at very short notice which meant unfortunately we weren’t able to have proper consultation process.” she explained. “We have been in contact with the department and they have said that in future they will flag these schemes earlier in the year so we can engage with the pubic regarding planned works” “I would also have to say that there is a lack of understanding with regards to what we’re doing here. The cycle lane is no different to a footpath in the context of people getting out of their car. Drivers should be looking in their mirrors before alighting their car anyway so I’m not too sure if there’s any difference here” she added.

Louth footballer, Shane Lennon, and apprentice electrician, Elanna Vallely, have been selected to act as Grand Marshals at this year’s Dundalk St Patrick’s Day parade. Shane and Elanna were selected from votes received by The Dundalk Leader and will take on the roles of Cuchulainn and Queen Medb on March 17 as they lead the parade in a chariot. Elanna (19) from Blackrock,

who is studying in FAS, was both delighted and surprised with the honour. “I couldn’t believe it when I got the call from Jimmy Cumiskey. I am really looking forward to the day”, she said. Elanna and Shane will follow in the footsteps of the likes of Jimmy McGee, Stephen Staunton and Conor Hughes who have previously acted as Grand Marshals.

The theme for the festival this year is “Land of Legends…and Full of Life”, which is based around the story of the Tain. The festival is taking place on Saturday 17 March and it is expected to attract a lot of visitors to the town. The Long Walk Shopping Centre will provide some post-parade entertainment with the Northern Ireland Friendship Band playing from 2:30pm.

Profesjonalny choć młodzieżowy, mający w swym dorobku wyjazdy do innych miast europejskich, a nawet Stanów Zjednoczonych, witany zwykle z wielkim entuzjazmem i poruszeniem. – Bez Was nie byłoby to możliwe. Wciąż potrzebujemy 2 rodzin, które zechcą ugościć u siebie dwoje nastolatków z zespołu. Tak malutko brakuje to pełnego sukcesu. Pozdrawiam Przewodnicząca Simul Polonia Agnieszka Boniewicz

Occupy Dundalk stage first protest By Niamh Kirk

Full house for Leap Night concert The concert to mark the Leap Night and to benefit St Nicholas Church was a great success. A large crowd filled the church and enjoyed performances by Irish tenor David Martin, local singer/songwriter Stewart Agnew, harpist Emer Kenny and local poet Kathleen Maddy. One of Kathleen Maddy’s poems Whispering Love was given special treatment; it was read in English, translated into Irish and made into a song sung by Stewart Agnew. David Martin sang a repertoire of classics including Nessun Dorma, Bring Him Home, Danny Boy and Panis Angellicus. All proceeds on the night went to benefit St Nicholas’ Church. A CD of the concert called Dundalk Leaps is available for €10 from Easons, Stairways To Heaven, Carrolls Bookshop, The Parochial House, and on-line from www. The fledgling ‘Occupy Dundalk’ movement gathered pace last week when they organised the first ‘Dundalk People’s General Assembly’ in the town Square last Tuesday evening. The meeting was designed to coincide with the monthly Town Council meeting as the protestors petitioned councillors as they entered the meeting. According to ‘Occupy Dundalk’ facilitator Finbar Markey the aim of the group is to create a social force in Dundalk and to protest against the many unfair cuts being proposed by the Government. “This group isn’t about leaders or speakers. It’s about the ordinary people on the street listening to each other and suggesting solutions.” he explained. “I’d say about 50 people turned up the other night with about 25% of them under the age of 18 which was refreshing to see. Basically we petitioned the councillors to propose a section 77 at the meeting which means that all items on the agenda are cancelled and a new motion can be discussed. Which in this case would be a motion condemning the household charge.” said Finbar. “We asked each councillor to propose the section 77 for us but predictably nobody bar Councillor Morgan agreed to propose it.” “Dundalk has a great history of standing up for themselves at times like this and we’re trying to re-ignite that. We are a peaceful group who aim to create social change in Dundalk and educate people with regards to the unfair and unjust charges being forced upon us by the Irish government” The ‘Occupy Dundalk’ movement plan on having many more meetings and events in the coming months and are even considering an ‘Occupy Festival’ which will include music and local people giving talks about the current economic problems being faced in Ireland.

Brush up on local history with new app By Niamh Kirk

Tourists, history lovers and Co Louth residents in need of a brush-up on their local knowledge will love the new Apple App- Louth Hidden History. The app is an initiative by Louth County Museum and is a remarkable interactive way to get to get to know the history and heritage of the area while out and about or in the comfort of your own home. As Museum Curator Brain Walsh notes in his opening welcome to the app, Louth is an area teeming with historical and mythological events and activity. “Ranging from the arrival of the first hunter gatherers, to the terror of the Vikings, the development railways

Brian Walsh

and the industrial expansion right up to the visit of Bill Clinton, Louth has borne eye witness to a unique historical story.” This app aims to link many of these events through museum exhibits and artefacts to the geographical locations associated with these major events. It provides detailed background information and interpretations of the wider cultural, religious, and political effects of significant people, events and locations in the area. The app is simple to use, allowing you to search for a townland or site directly; or you can look for the vari-

ous historical sites via a map. Once you find a location you are interested in, you simply click on it and you will be provided with some of the most important points of information about it. There is also an audio and video that goes with many of the locations giving additional information about the site, almost like a guided tour. The aim of the app is to help assist and inspire people to visit the sites and find out more about them. It was already working after only a few days as those who had downloaded the App took to Twitter to encourage many more to get involved.

Solicitor Conor McGuill said the applicant couldn’t produce documentation, but later in the day outlined that McDonagh went to the planning office. He explained there was a planning permission for two houses, and

his parents lived in one. The situation was explored to build on the other site, and a more recent planning application was made in the 80s. Judge Hamill said he was not satisfied with the evidence

Dundalk Leader 7th March 2012

Deirdre Fagan I’m a huge Jedward fan so of course I think it’s a great idea. They’ll win it for us this year and there will be great excitement in the country.

Sarah Byrne I’m not fans of Jedward at all. To be honest I didn’t even know that they were picked for the Eurovision. Hopefully they’ll do well though.

Martha Maguire I think it was a great idea to send them over to Eurovision again. They were great craic last year and this year’s other entrants were rubbish. They’ll do us proud.

Freda Brannigan & Elisha Gill Personally I think they’re a bit of a joke. They’re awful eejits in fairness. But then again Elisha here loves them so I suppose they have their audience.

Laura Moore I’m definitely not a Jedward fan. They done OK last year so I suppose it makes sense to send them again but they wouldn’t be my cup of tea.

Good news for rental properties There have been early signs of the boost coming to the area on the back of the announcement of PayPal opening its call centre here. Data released by property website daft.ie shows that there has been a significant jump in the interest in rental properties in Dundalk over the past two weeks since the online payments company announced it would bring 1000 jobs to the town. This represents some good news for property owners and rental agencies should be on the way. While looking at the day-today data is not yet possible, the

comparison week-on-week and with the same period last year, in the absence of any other overriding factors, shows a significant jump since the announcement. In the last two weeks of February Daft saw a significant 57% jump in the amount of rental properties viewed over the same period last year. Thousands of people flooded to the website following the announcement with over 4,000 more people looking for properties in the final week of February than the first. The increase has also dramatically affected the data for the entire county as there was a 70%

increase over the same period last year in people looking to rent in the county since the announcement on February 21. The data was correlated by daft. ie and the volume of rental properties in the area viewed week on week and also by comparison to the same periods last year. Aside from the announcement the data shows that there has been a moderate increase in the interest in the county all round, however recent surveys have shown that the number of properties available for rent nationwide has hit a three and a half year low. Co Louth saw a decrease of almost 2% in the number of properties available in

the final quarter of last year. It is good news also for those who are hoping to move to the area as they may stand to make a saving as rental prices also fell by 1.6% in the final three months of last year. Louth suffered the largest year-on-year fall of the Dublin commuter counties. At an average of €664 per month, prices are 30.6% from their peak. The PayPal site at Xerox is set to open this July and will have staff based in a variety of areas including customer service, risk prevention, financial operations, merchant services and sales across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Assault case adjourned Judge William Hamill adjourned further an assault case dating back to May 2008, declining to strike it out over the delay in it being heard. He put back at the local court two charges of assault causing harm against Richard Whitty (35), 15, Hawthorn Crescent, Bay Estate to July 5. It was adjourned the previous week because the prosecuting Garda was sick, and was adjourned a number of other times. Inspector Paul Kernan said part of the reason for the delay was that there was a counter allegation which the DPP had to rule on.

There will be plenty of ceoil agus craic over the next two weeks in Realt Na Mara Primary school as the schools pupils take part in a number of events to celebrate our national language. Seachtain Na Gaeilge is designed to promote the use of Irish Language and culture and according to Realt Na Mara’s Irish teacher Síle Uí Chiaráin the aim is to help make the language fun for children. “This is our native tongue and it is important that we keep the language alive“ explained Síle. Spirit Store present Gareth Dunlop Gareth Dunlop, BBC’s Radio Ulster ‘One to Watch 2010’ and winner of the ‘Young Songwriter of the Year Award’ at the 2011 Belfast Nashville Songwriter’s Festival is coming to Dundalk this Sunday March 11. The 25 year- old Belfast man is one of Ireland’s rising stars and has made great headway into the upper echelons of the industry already. Having built ‘Hill House Studios’ out of an old cow shed with friends, Gareth set about recording his solo EP ‘Rooms’ featuring

the songs ‘Firefly’ and ‘Tangled up’. ‘Firefly’ became a favourite of Snow Patrol who covered it at their show in Belfast’s Waterfront Hall. Gareth was invited to join the band on stage to perform his track, describing it as an “incredible and a proud moment.” An invitation quickly followed for Gareth to participate in a song-writing exchange between the sister cities of Belfast and Nashville which put Gareth on stage at the famous Bluebird Cafe. The immediate buzz

in the U.S surrounding Gareth’s music lead to several songs from his EP being placed on such hit television series as ‘Cougar Town’, ‘One Tree Hill’, ‘Private Practice’ and ‘Life Unexpected’. Earlier this year Gareth and his band finished recording his new album in Nashville with six-time Grammy winning producer Brent Maher. He is now taking his show on the road and Dundalk will be among the first to hear the offerings from Gareth’s forthcoming album.

Mackins scoop €20,000 lotto jackpot

Film-makers release DVD By Niamh Kirk

Dundalk based Film makers David McCabe, Ambrose McDermott are celebrating their movie ‘Shackled’ being picked up by American distribution company Midnight Releasing. ‘Shackled’ was the first feature length film from the locally based film production company Squid Media. After deciding that it would be ‘relatively easy to shoot a feature film in these locations with a small budget and minimal actors and crew’ Ambrose and Dave began to collaborate with Steve Cumiskey. After sourcing much of the ac-

tors and filmmakers online, with the exception of local actor John Montgomery, the shoot for Shackled took place over two weeks in October 2009 in location all around Dundalk. The sets were as diverse as the Louth County Hospital, the Fairways Hotel, Gyles Quay Beach and Bellurgan Park, which the production secured to shoot the finale for the film. Shackled is a super natural thriller that begins when a botched break-in on the night of murder victim Brian McDonald’s funeral prompts his sister Sarah to start investigating the events surrounding her brother’s last few weeks alive. Shackled had its local

premiere in Dundalk Town Hall in September 2010 and the event was attended by over 300. The feature will be available on View On Demand (VOD) release on over 30 cable and satellite channels in the U.S and Canada, including Verizon and AT&T, from March 2012. The film will be released internationally on DVD on March 6 through the distributor and will include a number of additional features including a retrospective ‘making of’, a director’s commentary and a blooper reel. Squid Media’s short film The Hollow Girl will also be included. It will makes its way into Irish stores in the coming months.

No doubt a draw might help maintain the harmony in the house on Sunday evening.

GENEVA MOTOR SHOW

Dundalk Leader 7th March 2012

At the Geneva Motor Show Mercedes Benz will announce details of the new A-Class. Design and dynamism are obvious characteristics of the new car even at first glance, simply in the way it sits up to 18 centimetres closer to the road than its predecessor. The new A-Class will feature Mercs’ first sub100 g/km engine with 99 CO2/km and there is the possibility of a fourwheel drive model. The petrol engines will be available as 1.6 and 2.0 litres units from 115 hp in the A180 and 156 hp in the A200 and 211 hp in the A250. The turbocharged diesel engines include A180 CDI offering an output of 109 hp, the A200 CDI 136 hp and the A220 CDI output of 170 hp. Engines feature the ECOstart/stop function as standard and are available with a new six-speed manual or 7G-DCT dual-clutch

automatic transmission. Volkswagen will announce details of their Polo BlueGT, with dynamic performance with extreme fuel efficiency, thanks to the use of ACT cylinder deactivation, which is being used for the first time. The turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine produces 140 PS with a combined fuel consumption figure of 60mpg and emits a forecasted 108 g/km of CO2. The new engine delivers high performance and low fuel economy which will become commonplace in the new modular transverse matrix (MQB) for future VW models. The Polo BlueGT is equipped with 17-inch alloys and GT badges front and rear, lowered suspension, rear spoiler, rear bumper with diffuser, plus front bum-

per with LED daytime running lights, side sills and front windscreen rain channels). A black-painted front grille and black door mirror caps complete the look. There are also sports seats and a leather-trimmed steering wheel with BlueGT emblem.
