In 2014/2015, we worked with Dundee Cancer Centre to develop a workshop about cancer research and take it out into 10 secondary schools across Tayside and Fife. Dundee Cancer Centre facilitates collaboration and communication of cancer related activities funded by Cancer Research UK and others across the University of Dundee, NHS Tayside and partner organisations. School students practised their experimental skills and learnt about cancer whilst discussing research with the scientist leading the workshop. The sessions were designed to support learning and teaching for courses including Curriculum for Excellence Higher Human Biology. We look forward to working together more to bring this important topic to schools.
Dundee Science Centre offers classroom resources free of charge for teaching practitioners to use with children and young people learning in the Broad General Education and Senior Phase. School Advisory Network STEMNET is a national charity that works with schools and colleges throughout the UK to support teaching practitioners to inspire students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. As the local STEMNET contract holder for North East Scotland, Dundee Science Centre is delighted to be supporting schools throughout Dundee, Angus, Perth and Kinross, Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. We can help you access a range of opportunities and resources to support learning and teaching within Curriculum for Excellence. We can assist you to discover and deliver a range of activities to engage pupils with STEM subjects and inspire them to pursue a career within the sector by: • connecting you with hundreds of enthusiastic and inspiring role models through the STEM Ambassador Programme • providing ongoing advice and support for STEM Clubs • informing you of opportunities with local and national schemes and initiatives • facilitating relationship-building with other schools, local universities and STEM-related industries
Dundee Science Centre supports school STEM Clubs by providing guidance and tailored advice about setting up and sustaining a club, including suggestions of what other clubs are getting up to across the region, and linking club leaders with resources, funding, events, competitions and STEM Ambassadors. STEM Clubs are an extra-curricular opportunity for pupils to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. STEM Clubs can be for coding, puzzles, Ecology, Astronomy, Engineering and more – anything which falls within STEM! They give learners the chance to develop practical leadership and teamwork skills, and also offer a chance for collaboration between STEM departments in schools. Clubs also create new opportunities to build partnerships with local industry, researchers and employers. STEM Ambassadors are encouraged to support STEM Clubs, and club leaders can request a STEM Ambassador to support their club by logging onto www.stemnet.org.uk
Our team will provide you with impartial, tailored advice and assistance, including information and guidance on local and national STEM initiatives, resources and projects, and professional learning opportunities. We can discuss how your school can most benefit from involvement with a STEM Ambassador and match your school or activity to the right volunteer(s) for your requirements. The STEM Advisory Network is designed around teaching practitioners’ needs, and can: • make a difference to learning; changing motivation, attitudes and enthusiasm for STEM • support delivery of experiences and outcomes within Curriculum for Excellence • give you access to resources and funding opportunities from industry • inspire STEM Clubs by connecting you to advice and resources • enable you to bring varied teaching and learning styles into your classroom Please e-mail ambassadors@dundeesciencecentre.org.uk or call 01382 868610 to find out more, or to arrange a meeting at your school.

Ambassadors come from a diverse range of backgrounds, and include students, researchers, and professionals in STEM related roles. Ambassadors are invited to volunteer for a range of exciting and stimulating activities such as curriculum support, working with STEM Clubs, and supporting events and challenges. STEM in Context events provide an excellent opportunity for local STEM Ambassadors and teachers to meet and discuss ways to work together - see the professional learning section. These events feature activities and networking opportunities, and allow time to explore resources available for STEM Ambassadors to bring to schools. To request a STEM Ambassador visit or support, simply register as a teacher at www.stemnet.org.uk , click on “Ambassadors” and add a “STEM Ambassador request”. A member of the STEM Learning Team will review your request and contact you to discuss your requirements. Alternatively, you can contact the team at ambassadors@dundeesciencecentre.org.uk or call 01382 868610.
