WET START The Wet Season has well and truly arrived in North Queensland.

Hayden Menso 2021 brought not only a new year but much-welcomed rain right across the Burdekin, following the movement of exTropical Cyclone Imogen. The cyclone formed up in the Gulf of Carpenteria on January 3 before moving over land and tracking down the east coast of Queensland from Cairns to as far south as Proserpine as a downgraded tropical low. It was Queensland’s first tropical cyclone of the season, living up to the La Nina conditions declared in October. While metro areas of the Burdekin have so far escaped any severe flooding incidents, parts of the region were impacted by rising river heights, flash flooding, and heavy rainfall. The Bureau of Meteorology reported significant rainfalls across our region, with 102mm recorded in six hours in Brandon on Tuesday, January 5, with 130mm over 24 hours in Ayr and 109mm at Eton Vale, near Bowen, in the 24 hours to 9 am Thursday, January 7.

The Burdekin State Emergency Service (SES) Unit was ready to assist residents in need during the wet weather. Local Controller John Winn said that since January 1, the Burdekin SES had been on seventeen callouts across the district. “Ten of those were working at heights, fixing roofs, but not necessarily getting on the roofs. We usually do most of our work off the side or throw the ropes from the ground over the top.” Sandbags were quickly made available for residents across the district. “There were eight sandbagging jobs, where people had requested assistance with sandbagging, mostly aged persons,” Mr. Winn said. Burdekin SES members supplied 2,750 filled sandbags to our community, plus many empty bags for residents to fill, at the time of going to print. “That’s quite an extensive amount of sandbags for this short period of time. Last year, with the major monsoon event, we filled over five thousand sandbags,” Mr. Winn said.

A Warm Year

The Bureau of Meteorology has released its Annual Climate Statement for 2020. Following the hottest year in 2019, 2020 was Australia’s fourth-warmest year on record. Annual rainfall was close to average across the country. The Statement revealed that Australia has warmed by 1.44 degrees since 1910, with November 2020 being the warmest November month on record.

as possible to make sure crews can attend in a timely manner. “We don’t mind urgent calls late at night, but we’d really like people if they wake up in the morning and find they’ve got a problem with rain, they should ring early in the day.” With the wet weather only just beginning, there is more to be expected throughout the remainder of the wet season. Residents are urged to be prepared for any further wet weather which may occur. “I would just like the

Half of the amount supplied was filled by local SES members, for members of the community who may not have been able to do so themselves, such as older residents. People should by now have cleaned their yards up, ready for any possible future flooding or possible cyclones that may impact the district. Hopefully, there won’t be any, but you should be sorted,” Mr. Winn advised. Watch and act precautions were put into place by Burdekin Shire Council. Rita Island residents were put on alert mid-last week,

with the rising of the Anna Branch River, while conserve water notices were issued for Giru and Mt Kelly residents. The Burdekin Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) moved to Stand Up mode on Tuesday, January 5, preparing for further heavy rainfall and damaging winds, but after calmer weather in recent days, the group stood down on Monday, January 11. Burdekin DMG Chair Lyn McLaughlin thanked residents for their assistance in sharing

information during last week’s weather event. “The wet season in North Queensland is renowned for its unpredictable rainfall totals, so being able to say for certain what would happen in one or two hours, let alone one or two days, was incredibly difficult. I want to thank everyone in the community for assisting us by sharing information as it came to hand in order to keep the community safe,” Cr McLaughlin said.

Shop local helps small businesses thrive Hayden Menso AN INITIATIVE by the Ayr and Home Hill Chambers of Commerce has kept the support going for local businesses in one of the most challenging times in recent history. The Burdekin Rewards program allows residents to be rewarded for spending locally at participating retailers by getting their rewards card stamped for each transaction. The program’s introduction saw many businesses clambering to get on board, with a steady increase in memberships of both the Ayr and Home Hill Chambers. Ayr Chamber of Commerce President Alissa Muir said Burdekin Rewards was a welcome initiative in our business community. “It is something people can get on board and open the conversation about shopping locally with friends and colleagues, supporting local shopping, supporting local jobs and our local community,” Mrs. Muir said. “We had an overwhelming response from residents to the program, which has only been running for four months, with over 10,000 rewards cards already distributed to shoppers.”

Kylie McNee, Pierina Dalle Cort, Alissa Muir and Linda Butler hold up the winning cards for the 4 x $1,000 gift card Mega Draw, drawn on 31st December, 2020

2020 culminated with the Mega Draw, where four lucky shoppers won a $1,000 Burdekin Gift Card on New Year’s Eve just by shopping locally. “When Pierina Dalle Cort made the calls to the winners, she had wonderful responses, including tears and laughter of joy. It was marvellous that we had two winners from Ayr and two from Home Hill,” Mrs. Muir said. The Rewards Program will continue this year, with monthly draws and another Mega Draw in December. The Burdekin Gift Cards, another local shopping program provided by the Chambers, will also continue

this year. “Our ongoing Burdekin Gift Card program is moving ahead in leaps and bounds, with over 1,000 Burdekin Gift Cards loaded over the

Christmas period. These cards are the perfect gift, enabling the recipient to use them at 74 outlets locally, plus it helps put more money back into our community.”

QFES advises locals to be aware of electrical fire risks Marina Trajkovich THERE are renewed calls from local emergency services for residents to be aware of the risks of electrical fires, particularly in wet weather. Firefighters and police responded to reports of smoke issuing from the Kalamia Hotel just after midnight on January 7th, investigating a potential electrical fire hazard. Staff reported the strong smell of smoke, evacuating patrons before emergency personnel took over. Kevin Trueman, station officer at the Ayr Fire Station, says that after 30 minutes of analysing the area, the source of the smoke was located within the venue’s electrical system. “Had the place been unoccupied, or if everyone had gone home for the day in the early hours of the morning, that potentially could have been a serious fire,” said Kevin Trueman. “The managers identified it quickly and called us to stop a major event.” He says the hotel managers did a great job responding quickly and helping the team identify the source. “On arrival, there was

evidence of the smell of smoke. “We investigated the source and isolated the power,” he said. Mr. Trueman warns that as wet weather poses potential damage to homes, being aware of the risks that electrical fires pose is particularly crucial. “With all the water around, it’s very important for the public to be aware of electrical hazards and test their electrical equipment, particularly in this wet period.” He encourages people in the Burdekin to check their residual-current devices (RCD’s) or safety switches and call an electrician if there are any signs of damage. Electrical fires can be caused by old or damaged power outlets, cables, or appliances, exacerbated by water and moisture, which can cause short-circuiting and overheating. Mr. Trueman says it’s also a great time to clean and check your smoke alarm, keeping in mind that high humidity levels may increase the chances of a false alarm. In the event of an emergency, always call 000.

Roosting pigeons? Watch your step. The Editor, You may recall your small News item “Pigeon poo fines” published by you on 12th Nov 2020. I wrote to Burdekin Shire Council, following that publication, pointing out that our State’s Workplace Health and Safety Legislation would require the barricading closed of Council’s footpaths if there was any chance of passing traffic, whilst a business owner or employee attended to cleaning pigeon poo from Council property, ie footpaths. Below is a letter received back from a Council Administration Officer, it appears that your reported fining of commercial building owners, for not cleaning footpaths, has been revised. However Council apparently now intend to fine commercial building owners who do not keep pigeons off their buildings? This is Looney Tunes stuff. The reality is, most of the pigeon poo problems are as a direct result of pigeons roosting on Ergon power lines, above Council footpaths. Common sense is one of the ongoing rarest commodities of the Administrative Centre of the Burdekin Shire Council. Pigeons are a Community Health problem, damaging both private and public buildings, and a very odorous problem now the rain has arrived across our pigeon infested areas. Council can try to avoid their responsibilities, what they will not achieve is a solution by threatening CBD ratepayers, many absentee, untenanted, with fines for a Council Environment and Health problem. It has obviously escaped their notice, pigeons fly, property owners cannot prevent them going where they will, and roosting where they wish.

Council spent a token amount on a Pest Extermination Contract to poison the pigeons. However one of the excuses provided for terminating that program, which was having an impact on the pigeon population, was cats were eating dead birds and becoming secondary victims, I personally call that a success, killing two pests with one stone. Thousands of dollars have been spent by business owners in Home Hill on deterrents that simply DO NOT work. * Electric Bird Fences * Sonic Bird Scare devices * Humming Bird Scare Tapes * Motorised Reflector Units * Predator Decoys, Eagles, Owls etc. * Extremely expensive Bird X Laser Lights, proving equally as useless. Perhaps Council’s next stupidity, will be to order the removal of Ergon Power Lines? If so, Council should certainly be the first to have their lights put out. I suggested to Council with Special Police consent, the only viable solution is for Council, to fund its own Community Volunteer Recreational Sports Shooting Clubs, to use air powered weapons and exterminate the birds in a humane way. Solving the pigeon problem at low cost and supporting our local sports organisations a win win. But perhaps Government red and green tape at all levels, prevents any real solution. Bob Ford Home Hil

Dear Bob, I refer to your email of 12 November 2020 in connection with the above. In reply I provide the following comments. Council has agreed to commence the procedures to amend its local laws to include provisions to specify that pigeon droppings on footpaths are a community safety hazard and prescribe actions to require the landowner to take action to prevent such hazard from occurring. The objective of the amendments will be to go to the cause of the problem and where appropriate, make the property owner take action to prevent the pigeons from roosting above the footpath thereby preventing any droppings onto the footpath. Council is not intending to fine landowners in respect of the instances of droppings on the footpath, rather it is to address the cause of the problem which allows the pigeons to roost above the footpath.

If landowners wish to clean their footpath they are most welcome, especially since they provide an entry to the landowner’s premises and as long as they take reasonable precautions to ensure there are no safety issues for pedestrians. Any hosing or brooming of the footpath required to remove bird droppings should be undertaken prior to the opening of the business and adjacent businesses to minimise disruption to pedestrians and include appropriate slip signage. In this circumstance, Council does not consider that a barricade application/approval process is required. I trust this information helps to clarify the matter. Regards, Dan Mulcahy Manager Environmental and Health Services Burdekin Shire Council

School The North Queensland Savvy initiative will help in need kickstarts families prepare for the school new year year ahead Hayden Menso THE start of the new school year can be a stressful one for many families, particularly this year. With the financial costs of purchasing school supplies, uniforms, textbooks and school trips and events, it can be difficult at the Christmas recovery period and the impacts of the pandemic. Centacare NQ launched its School Savvy project this week in Ayr and Townsville, and hopes to help over a thousand families this month. The project will provide

upcycled and donated school items and uniforms to families in need, at low cost. Centacare North Queensland Director of Client Services, Stephen Burrowes, said the initiative has been supported by local businesses and the community. “We are providing this affordable alternative to school supplies after hearing that many kids across the region will start the school year without the resources they need.” He said the project will help reduce the stress around stocking school supplies.

“Our aim is to get kids starting the school year as stress free as possible by supporting their families to get what they need to succeed at school,” Mr Burrowes said. Queensland Country Group is a Gold Partner of the Centacare NQ School Savvy program, with CEO Aaron Newman having said it is part of the organisation’s commitment to supporting the local community. “In addition to financially supporting School Savvy, we’re really pleased that our Community Volunteer Program enables Queensland

Centacare NQ’s Lucy Stephens, Queensland Country Bank Regional Manager Darrell Burgess and Queensland Country Health Fund employee Julie Aguirre

Country staff to show their support personally by volunteering during business hours in the pop up shops in Townsville and Ayr.” All items at the pop-up shop range in price from only

50c to $6. Donations of school uniforms and stationery supplies will still be accepted until the end of January at Centacare NQ offices. The Burdekin shop at 2/143

Edwards Street is open from 10 am to 2 pm, Monday to Friday, for the remainder of the month, or until supplies run out.

The Bur-del team are excited to be in their new office on Wickham street

FOR Christine Monday, stepping through the office doors of the new Bur-del Cooperative and Advancement Society building marked a long-awaited milestone. The new expansion and opening of the organisation’s first health clinic is something she has looked forward to since taking on the role of CEO in 2015. “I knew I had the passion, the drive and love for the people and the elderly community to be able to try to lobby whoever, whatever we had to do to get to where we are now. It all paid off,” says Christine, who began working with Bur-del as a support worker 17 years ago. “Bur-del was established to provide affordable housing to the indigenous families of the Burdekin region because there was a lot of hardship for a lot of people,” she says. The organisation has been operating in the community since 1975, established initially as a housing service aimed at addressing the needs of families in the indigenous community.

It has since taken on other roles in the community, providing aged care services, early education and emergency housing. The new allied health hub on Graham street will be the first of its kind for the organisation and a new way for clients and community members to access muchneeded health services. “Once that’s established we will be doing a bit of rehabilitation as well as having other allied health providers come in,” says Christine. “We did identify that there were a lot of clients who were put on waiting lists to see, for example, an occupational therapist, a speech pathologist, a podiatrist. We were also constantly transporting clients to Townsville to attend their allied health appointments. “We thought, if we establish a hub where we can have a space available for a health provider to come into that hub, then our clients don’t have to go out of town,” she says. The allied health hub will be accessible to clients

and members of the public, employing contracted health workers as well as a masseuse and other health professionals to create a holistic health space. Working alongside her two children and husband Emmene Monday, the chairman of Bur-del, Christine is proud of how the organisation has grown, from four to 400 clients residing across over 79 properties. She stresses that although the organisation’s roots focused on addressing the needs of the indigenous community, the housing, health and support services offered are open to everyone. “We are all human, regardless of race, colour, gender. I sought approval from government officials to be able to utilise that indigenous funding to service the wider community and non-indigenous people. “When they saw that we were making it work, everything just got easier and bigger and better. “We’re prepared to advocate for anyone and everyone,” she says.

We’re going to approach the entrants that they can sell the outfits on the night.” The regular fashion on a budget sections will see creativity bloom without breaking the bank. “We’ve got an Open section, which is a $30 budget challenge, and then we have a Student section, where they can use something out of the cupboard that they’ve remodelled, and it’s unlimited what they spend.” This year it’s all about the presentation, with judging taking place on Saturday morning, March 27th. Later that night, all entries will be presented, and the winners announced with awards. “From last year, we found it difficult to keep things moving when you’re waiting on judging. We thought it would be much easier to pre-judge it so that everything will go to a program,” Sandi said.

Rags to Runway will return in 2020 at the Burdekin Netball Association courts

The event will be one for all artists and fashionistas to take part in, with cash prizes up for grabs in each section. “It’s all anonymous. The judges don’t know who’s designed anything; they don’t know until the outfits are presented that night. We’ve tried to keep it that way because we felt it makes it a little bit fairer; it’s better if nobody knows who’s designing and in the competition.” Anyone in the community can take part. “It’s open to anyone at all. The only one that has the restriction is the student one, up to 18 years,” Sandi said. The Rags to Runway event originated as a fundraiser for the Artisan’s art space, on top of artwork commission, to help the group keep going and cover any costs. The presentation night will once again be held outdoors at the Burdekin Netball Association grounds.

Entrants from previous years

Hayden Menso CREATIVE flair and an eye for design will be top of mind for entrants of this year’s Burdekin Rags to Runway event. In its third year, the occasion acts as an annual fundraiser for the Burdekin Artisans, and this year will be the biggest yet. Sandi Milani, President of the Burdekin Artisans Association, said the popularity of last year’s event is a sign of growing interest. “The inaugural one [in 2019] we had nine entries, and last year we had 28 entries. So we’re hoping for a lot more because we’ve got more new categories now,” Sandi said. This year’s competition will introduce a budget racewear category as a precursor to Home Hill races. “A $40 limit to the budget, so you can spend that on whatever you use, but it has to be everything that you display on the catwalk,” she said.

Bash to hit cancer for six AN INAUGURAL COMMUNITY EVENT WILL SEE ALL-IN CRICKETING ACTION IN SUPPORT OF BRAIN CANCER RESEARCH.

Event organisers James Casswell and Callan Sunderland

Hayden Menso IT’S the word nobody wants to hear, cancer. In any of its forms, it is often a life-threatening illness. Brain cancer is no exception, being one of the most aggressive forms of cancer, with just a 22%

chance survival rate. A new Burdekin event will be held on Saturday, 20th February, as a community effort to raise vital funds and bring the community together. Local schoolteacher and cricket player Callan Sunderland and his team of volunteers have put together

the Bash 4 Brain Cancer charity event which is sure to be a fun day on the Home Hill Cricket Association oval. “The event came about, as all good events do, over a couple of beers with some mates,” Callan said. The idea sparked in support of much-loved Home Hill resident Col Casswell, who has been diagnosed with brain cancer. “My old man, his best man at his wedding was Col Casswell, who unfortunately has brain cancer,” Callan said. “One of the mainstays down at the club is James Casswell, Col’s son, and we said it would be awesome to have a game of cricket, have a bit of fun, and raise some money for brain cancer.” The disease had an

estimated 1,879 cases diagnosed across Australia in 2020 alone, according to Cancer Australia. The Bash will consist of a Twenty-Twenty cricket match, held at 3:30 pm on the day, between the Casswell Eleven and President’s Eleven. “It’s all in good fun, with a mixture of new rules that we’ve got to come up with. It’ll just be a good day out,” Callan said. Regular scheduled games at the club will hit off before the anticipated match, with the Home Hill Junior Cricket teams final home games of the season that morning. “I just want the community to come together, that’s the big, exciting thing, but of course, it’s about finding

different ways to raise money for brain cancer research and awareness.” Callan said the event has already grown in support since its announcement on social media, with local businesses getting involved. “Businesses have been fantastic. We have shirt sponsors, and there have already been other businesses ringing me to ask to get on board. “The Brisbane Heat are sending us raffle prizes as well, and we’ve gone to the Big Bash, and they’re sending us some prizes. It’s reached all the way down to Brisbane; I think that’s pretty awesome,” Callan said. Inspired by the Laurie’s Love 24hr Row for a Cure, Callan said the community

supporting itself is what brought the event to fruition. “I participated last year, and just seeing the number of people that were there for Laurence; that drove me to do this as well for Col,” he said. “It’s a terrible disease, and just seeing how the community comes together is eye-opening.” There will be plenty of raffles, novelty games, prizes, and laughs on the day, with everyone in our community invited to come along and show their support. The screen under the stars Marina Trajkovich WHEN movie buffs Frank and Suzzi Jerkic met at Ayr’s iconic drivein cinema in the 70s, they knew immediately they were a good match. Seven weeks into the relationship, the Mt Isa projectionist and Home Hill local were married, later purchasing the cinema where their relationship began and moving into the adjacent property. “I thought that anyone who was interested in movies had to be good,” says Suzzi. “We just love the movies.” The pair talk about their first meeting from the drive-in’s popular cafe, Silver Screens and Coffee Beans, where cinema-goers can feast on burgers, waffles and movie snacks. Around the cafe, murals from movie scenes and an array of colours fill the whimsical outdoor space. The draw, however, is the original movie screen which has been playing movies in the Burdekin since 1964. Suzzi says that going to the drive-in was a huge part of her life growing up, one she looks back on with fond memories. “We lived out on a cane farm and didn’t get to see many movies but when we would come here it was a big adventure, and we just loved it,” she says. Ayr’s Stardust drive-in cinema is the oldest surviving drive-in in Queensland and one of only a handful of remaining drive-in cinemas in Australia. She says that a shared passion and not wanting to see the cinema disappear contributed to the couples decision to purchase the business in 1989. “We didn’t want to lose it. You can’t beat film,” says Frank. Since then, Suzzi has transformed the space into a movie buffs paradise and even created a fairy garden for visiting families and children, also the setting for her

children’s books. “The indoor cinema wasn’t here, and I’ve planted all the trees. It was pretty boring actually when we first bought it,” says Suzzi. “The gardens kept getting bigger, and then I started to write kids stories. There’s a secret garden because I love the movie The Secret Garden. “It’s enchanted, it has wishing wells and dragons, bridges, all sorts of stuff,” she says. The couple has been running the drive-in for 32 years, saying that it has had a considerable role in their lives. But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. The year they purchased the cinema, the Burdekin was struck by cyclone Aivu, decimating the property and damaging the drive-in screen. “It took us a while to get everything back together after that. The screen was a wreck,” says Suzzi. “I can remember we still had the shop going with only part of the roof.” Last year, however, despite the cinema industry’s reeling due to COVID 19 the Jerkic’s business was revitalised, with in-car seating the perfect way to socially distance at the movies. With no new releases, the pair began playing retro movies, sparking renewed interest in the drive-in cinema outing. “Everyone had been so locked up for so long, they really wanted to get out,” says Suzzi. “It’s been great, we asked people coming here, what would you like to see? There was Footloose and Dirty Dancing, things that people had suggested and we actually did really well.” She says that with the popularity of the old movies, the retro flicks aren’t going away any time soon. “There have been so many comments from so many people about how great it was, the food was great, staff were great and absolutely loving the retro feel.”

Below: The fairy garden is used as inspiration for Suzzi’s children’s books. Guests are welcome to enjoy a coffee from the cafe and peruse the garden. A yellow brick road leads to the fairy garden.

Frank and Suzzi Jerkic have been running Ayr’s Stardust Drive-in Cinema for 32 years, one of Queensland’s longest-running drive-ins.

103 years young Cyprian born, Home Hill local Euphemia Theofanes celebrates her 103rd Birthday Marina Trajkovich

AT 103 years old, Euphemia Theofanes can’t believe it is almost her birthday. One of 10 siblings, she still remembers the feeling of excitement, when in 1939, at the age of 21, she boarded a ship from Peyia Cyprus headed to Australia. It is here she would join five of her brothers and three of her sisters in Queensland and start a family of her own in Home Hill. Now, the centenarian is celebrating another important milestone on the 15th January, with a family lunch from her eldest daughter, Joan’s, home over the weekend. “I can’t believe it,” she says. “I’m looking forward to seeing my family. Of course,” says Euphemia, sitting beside her daughter in a lilac, collared dress. “I have to remind her that she’s turning 103 and then she’s always surprised and says ‘goodness gracious me!’” says her daughter Joan. “She’s got a pretty good outlook.” Although coming to Australia in search of more opportunities and a better life, things haven’t always been easy for the mother of five. When she first arrived in Home Hill, Euphemia stayed with her brother, Chris Stefanos and his wife Helen, where she met her husband George, who worked for the family as a cane cutter.

But when she was 40 years old, in the late 1950s her husband was involved in a horrific accident, hit by a train while working on the railway lines and devastating the family. A single mother, Euphemia picked up odd jobs stripping cane to support her two boys and daughters. “In those days she did extra work, whatever she could find to help supplement the pension and support her kids,” says her daughter Joan. “I was 17, so I was working, and my brother was working on the railway, and the other three were at school.” “She stayed strong through everything,” says Joan. The Greek community in the Burdekin was robust at the time, supportive of Euphemia and her family. She was also grateful for the support of her brothers and sisters. “We didn’t have much money,” says Euphemia. “You have to make yourself a bit stronger so you can cope. “You’ve got to be very careful in life and look after people,” she says. When asked what she is most proud of in her long life, she says her children without hesitation; her daughters Joan, Mary and Colleen, currently living in America and her sons, Steve and Peter. “People used to call her to do something, and she’d do it for them. She was a very caring person and still is,” says Joan.

For our household, Christmas this year was all about appreciating the little things in life, like being able to spend time with family and friends. The rain, an absolute blessing to the crops, put a dent in our plans to holiday at Wunjunga but provided a lot of time to hang out with the kids at home to eat, drink and be merry – now I have to work off the 20kg of chocolate I consumed!

I worked on a show called “Give My Regards To Broadway” which we toured in Queensland in December. We performed the show with the Burdekin’s Monica Licciardello, Michelle Higgins and Margaret Fisck from JTM Productions in Melbourne. We sang at the Burdekin’s Community Christmas Carols in Home Hill which was a fantastic night and great to see so many people getting together and enjoying the occasion. We also sang at Christmas Morning Mass. For New Years Eve with Attori we performed our 70’s to 80’s show up in Innisfail Brothers Leagues Club. Another great night to see so many people enjoying themselves. A very wet trip up north it was for all of us. Let’s hope this year we get to see things getting back to normal.

My husband and I went to Yungaburra and had a Christmas celebration with my mother and father in-law. We were supposed to celebrate Christmas in Indonesia, but due to the pandemic we had to pospone it. We had an enjoyable moment, did some cooking with a lot of seafood on the menu and of course opening the Christmas presents.

Coutts Commercial Tavern, Ayr

In this series, we’ll take you into the saloons and behind the bars of some of the Burdekin’s muchloved watering holes, to meet the landlords, the locals and to discover what makes our pubs great. Manager Steve Amundsen with bartender Selisa Harvey

The Coutts Commercial Tavern has seen many transformations over the years, attracting locals for a beer and a feed since the 1980s. Marina Trajkovich WHEN Steve Amundsen applied to work at the Coutts Commercial Tavern in Ayr, he had no idea how much he would grow to love the town, the pubs and the locals who frequent the popular tavern. The experienced publican and hotel manager was living in Melbourne before making the move to North Queensland six and a half years ago, seeking a change in atmosphere and the promise of good fishing. “It was a huge change, it’s just way different from the cities,” says Steve. “The people here are wonderful, we’ve got some great customers here.” The Coutts Commerical Tavern, located on Queen street is perhaps best known for its rustic charm, the tin panels and wooden details on the bar exuding old-time charm with a modern twist. “The hotel has a lot of character, with a lot of the hotels in the city you lose that atmosphere,” says Steve. “It’s been a pleasure to work here; it’s been very good,” he says. He is grateful for the opportunity to connect with the community and is proud of the pub’s involvement with local organisations. “We run weekly raffles and then would choose a community organisation to support. “We support a lot of groups here and interact with the community, the water festival, we work a lot with the schools,” he says. The huge sports screens continue to draw local crowds, and the tavern’s restaurant is also a town favourite. “We really focus on the quality and the presentation.” Steve Tuffin, an ex-staff member, is another iconic Burdekin bartender who

has been serving locals in pubs for 45 years. As a young man in his early 20s, he was one of the first bartenders working in the Coutts Commercial Hotel, pouring the first beer in the pub when the tavern opened its doors in 1980. Now working part-time in Alfie’s Bakery, he reflects on 25 years at Coutts and the many changes the establishment has undergone during his time there. “The Coutts’ was a very influential family here. They ended up owning the Ayr, the Delta, the Kalamia and the Tavern, all at one time. And they also had the night club next door to the Delta, which was called Dolly’s,” he says. He remembers the ‘Oregon Bar,’ which used to be a part of the tavern, created with bar stools and rugs made from the Oregon wood and hides on the Coutts’ family cattle ranch. Under different ownership, the bar transformed into ‘Tiffany’s,’ featuring a new cocktail every week, themed parties and live music alongside the traditional bar and dining venue. “It wasn’t like going to work; it was like going to a big party with all your local friends. The customers really got behind the live bands and the cocktails,” says Steve Tuffin. While the tavern currently focuses more on the dining and pub aspect of the hotel, it has retained its collection of loyal locals who come for a beer and a meal most days of the week. Cade Johnson, who works at the BIG4 Silver Link Caravan Park in Ayr, says that the tavern is his go-to local pub. “I used to work around here, in the bottle shop out the back,” says Cade. “There’s still some of the old staff, the staff and the meals are really good.”

there is anything wrong with these lures. At least you can adjust the metal bibs. Hard plastic bibs are more likely to snap off when they collide with a rock or snag. But, to get to the point, these wonky lures can usually be adjusted so that they swim correctly. There are two ways you can right a lop-sided lure. Begin by checking that the lure’s hook eyelets are all reasonably aligned. Adjust any that aren’t by bending them carefully with a pair of pliers. Next, if your lure has a metal bib you can simply

You can end up with the same symptoms when a lure is damaged during a fight with a fish, or by being bounced off, or dragged over, a rock, snag or even just the bottom. This damage is more prevalent in metal bibbed lures, such as those you make yourself or the ones you might buy from a small producer. Which is not to say

In theory we should be able to take a lure straight from its packet and have it swim perfectly. Good lure manufacturers claim to tank test their lures before they are packaged, but just occasionally one will do anything but what it is supposed to do. One of the most common faults is an inclination to lay on one side, swimming back to the rod tip in a long arc. At best this

bend the bib slightly one way or the other to make an adjustment. I must emphasise that adjustments usually need only be very slight to rectify the problem and can usually be done between thumb and forefinger. Don’t try this with a plastic bib or you may snap the bib off altogether. The other way to adjust lures (and the only way to adjust plastic-bibbed lures) is to bend the towing eyelet to the left or right with a pair of pliers. Once again adjustments should be only very slight. Whether you

are adjusting the bib or the eyelet, large adjustments which then require counteradjustments, should be avoided, as the excess movement may fracture the eyelet or loosen the bib. Of course, take care that you don’t end up with a treble hook in your hand when making these adjustments. If you have a lure that isn’t running quite right, just a slight tweak might be all it needs to bring it back onto an even keel. And it might score you a barra in a few weeks time.

PAT NUTTALL - DIRECTOR

How long have you been working with the Burdekin singers? Since 1974 How did you get into working with the company? Basically through performing in the musicals way back when I first came to live in the Burdekin. I was asked at the beginning of the 90s if I would direct Oliver and so I kind of bit the bullet and ever since then I’ve been a director. What has been a highlight for you, and what do you most enjoy about working on the yearly productions? The creation, starting with just words and then developing costume, developing set, the actual creation of the thing to go from a book to a live performance on stage. What can we expect from this year’s Mary Poppins, and what are you most excited about? For one, just the fact that we can – we’re very excited to be able to have a full theatre. That’s something to really be excited about, and also the actual play itself is quite technically difficult. We’re flying Bert and Mary, and that’s something that small theatre companies don’t often get the chance to do so we’re very excited by that. Favourite musical? Whatever one I’m doing at the moment! I think The Adam’s Family because it has such a wonderful sense of humour.

How long have you been working with the Burdekin singers? 20 years I’d say How did you get into working with the company? I followed my wife into it! I didn’t have a theatre background at all until I met Pat. What has been a highlight for you, and what do you most enjoy about working on the yearly productions? I try to avoid being in the shows because I have no talent as far as I’m concerned! It’s the camaraderie and stuff like that. It’s a lot of commitment, but you have a lot of fun. As the producer, I’m trying to organise sets, make sure they’re going to be ready in time, and my biggest role is looking after the business sponsorship. The businesses around here are great; they help us out tremendously. What can we expect from this year’s Mary Poppins, and what are you most excited about? I think its a very technical show, it’s a big show. Once again, we’ve got castmembers flying in the show; we had to bring up Ricky, our rigger, from Brisbane for that. It’s going to be a really good show, it’s whole family entertainment. Most people know the words of the songs, so it’s not as if you’re going into a musical that’s foreign to people, everyone has grown up with it. Favourite musical? The one I enjoyed being in most of all was Cats; we had a good band, a really good group of oldies, you could say, and we had a ball in that! My favourites would have to be Secret Garden and Big River, those two.

CORRINA POLGA HEAD OF BACKSTAGE

How long have you been working with the Burdekin singers? 43 years How did you get into working with the company? Going to see a friend on stage who I worked with and watching them have fun grew into joining them on stage for lots of productions. We were then called the Ayr Choral Society and then changed the name to Burdekin Singers in the ‘90s, who we are today. I was acting, singing and dancing on stage for many productions over the years, then moved to working and helping backstage. Sometimes I am asked to do both! What has been a highlight for you, and what do you most enjoy about working on the yearly productions? A highlight was performing Cats; I loved it! And also being Kevin Wright’s personal dresser on stage in Boy from Oz, that was amazing! I enjoy working with great people who bring life to the stage. Having Pat Nuttall direct us all and what we can do as a team on stage and backstage is amazing. What can we expect from this year’s Mary Poppins, and what are you most excited about? There are always lots of magical moments on stage. For this performance, it’s great to be going on stage at a time of uncertainty in the world. Favourite musical? Musicals in general! Cats, Boy from Oz, Joseph, Jesus Christ Superstar, Phantom and Beauty and the Beast are my favourite six!

Roosters ready for winning 2021 season Brian Carnes BURDEKIN Roosters A Grade coach Chris Perry will have three trial matches to look at what talent he has to work with this season before the competition begins. Only one of those matches will be played at Rugby Park, with the Roosters playing a Blackhawks under 21 team on March 20. As Ivanhoes from Cairns and Magpies from Mackay visited the Burdekin last season, it is the Roosters’ turn to have away games in Cairns on March 13 and in Mackay on March 27. It is not yet known as to what other grades will be played apart from A Grade. The Bowen Tens are also scheduled for the end of February. Training for the club in all grades will start next Tuesday night, January 19, at Rugby Park from 6.30 pm. As A Grade coach, Perry will be assisted by Ben Smith taking control of the reserve grade, with Will Jack assisted by Jason Williams in control of the under 19. Frank Beer will again lead the Hens team. Perry said that Scott Watson would be in charge of pre-season fitness, sure to have the players ready to go for the first trial matches. A number of under 19 players will be making the move up the ladder this season, with Riley Horan, Riley Maddern, and Kade Harch ready to try out for A Grade. Perry said Maddern is a tough-as-nut front-rower, while Harch is a utility and Horan a smart half-back. The coach will see the name Riley in his sleep, with Riley Granshaw a player who could also feature in the forwards. The Club will not have A Grade captain Ryan Davenport’s services at every game this coming season, as

he now works away from the district and could be available every second week. One forward hoping to have a good season is hardworking front-rower Mitchell Guy. Guy represented North Queensland in 2018 and 2019, and possibly would have done last year, so he will be looking for his third jersey. Blake Hollywood is another who could have a big season, along with Kali Nauque, having recovered from a leg injury playing Rugby Union. Possibly the smartest hooker in the TDRL would be Zac Heron, if the team is selected on ability. Heron showed in the Club of Origin he has lost none of his scheming ability from dummy half, with Tyrone Sims also showing out in that position for Hornets at those games. Perry said that Kurt Perry was ready to go and was training early. That was seen at the Club of Origin series with Perry one of the top four on show that day. Another would have been fullback Joel Mason, who could find himself wearing the Townsville number one if his form keeps up. Perry said the club would miss hard forward James Whitby, who has returned to Brisbane for work, but he is confident others would fit into his jersey. The coach said that the Tom brothers Marley and Sem, along with Tate Brombal, Emene Monday, and Jared Giardina, would also be pushing for positions. It is expected the Fijian players will arrive in early February, thanks to local farmer Ken Duncan. Five players who came over two years ago will be here as well as a couple of others. Winger Ili Nareki will be playing in the Ron Massey Cup competition in Sydney in the inaugural Fijian team.

Brandon Bowls

The 2021 bowls season at the Brandon Bowls Club opened on Sunday with some cracker games. Sixteen hardy souls braved the elements and ended up enriched by the experience. Nev Dickinson and Gary Pearce started out like champions taking a good lead, only for Ken Ferguson and Peter Henderson to mount rear-guard action,

chewing into the lead, but it proved to be too little, too late. Doug Kiehne and Len Feeney were frozen like deer in the headlights trying to combat the bowling storm of precision line and length delivered by Jamie Woods and Joe Ypinazar. Merv Wilshere and Peter Jorgensen were no match for the lively up-tempo performance by Henry Hazel and Dave Defranciscis. Alan Garioch and Richard Mau

rode to victory courtesy of 3 atrocious ends put in by Leo Kenny and Vince Beitia in an otherwise close match. Games will be on Sunday with names in by 1:00 pm for a 1:30 pm start. Friday night bowls will commence on the 15th of January, with names in by 6:30 pm for a 7:00 pm start. Call Gary on 0488214222 or the club on 0456727061 close to the times above.

Tennis volunteer’s special gift

RECOGNITION FROM AUSSIE SPORTS STAR A SPECIAL SURPRISE FOR COL CASSWELL

Hayden Menso A MUCH-LOVED local volunteer to Home Hill Tennis has been recognised with an extra special gift. Col Casswell recently received a surprise visit from two top members of Tennis Queensland, recognising his valuable contributions as a Director to the group over many years. Col has been volunteering for Tennis Queensland and the Home Hill Tennis Association and is a wellknown Burdekin sports community member. Tennis Queensland CEO Mark Handley and President Warwick Nicol presented Col with a signed framed tennis racquet from Team Barty, on behalf of Australian Tennis star and world number one player Ash Barty and her parents Robert and Josie. The presentation was much of a surprise to Col, with his family keeping the honour quiet. “We tried to keep it a surprise, but Col doesn’t like surprises. So we told him we were meeting with Mark and Warwick in Townsville but didn’t say why,” Col’s wife Kate Casswell said. Mark and Warwick flew up from Brisbane to Townsville one afternoon, making the presentation. “It was very special,” Kate said. The framed racquet bears the inscription, “From Team Barty to Team Casswell. Thank you for your valued contribution to Tennis in Queensland.” Over the years, the Casswell family has become synonymous with local

Tennis, with Col and Kate playing and passing the sport onto their children. “Ever since we married and began playing tennis together in Home Hill in 1988, he’s been involved,” Kate said. “Tennis is a wonderful sport. You meet new people and can become lifetime friends.” Col himself said there are many fellow amazing volunteers in our community who all work hard to create community success. “I’m proud to be in Home Hill because of that genuine volunteer base,” Col said. His Tennis involvement has been built around a strong “team” philosophy, acknowledging all the local volunteers who add a valuable contribution to our sporting community. “I have been really pleased to move here and see the wonderful work of Burdekin volunteers and families,” Col said. Col and Robert Barty had struck a keen friendship over time, with Robert also coming from North Queensland, heralding from Bowen. “They are a genuine team, a very strong, genuine family. There is a lot of support and sacrifice, like many families,” Col said. With a lifetime of volunteering behind him, Col’s contributions to Tennis, together with other past and present volunteers, have added to make it what it is today. “Without people doing that, we don’t have opportunities like people in the cities do. You get a lot out of it,” Kate said.

Football Matters Cyclops with

A NEW YEAR, and a new football season in the deep north. And it’s all happening! The Panthers start pre-season training at International Park on 19 January, Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Walking Football will begin, hopefully, on Monday 18 January. In addition, Burdekin Football Club will be holding its AGM on Sunday 31 January at the Junior Hall at 11.00am.

NEW YEAR, NEW COMP As usual with Football in North Queensland there have been changes and in 2021 the Premiers and Reserves will play in an eighteen Round competition which is due to start on 14 April. The Ladies Premiers and Reserves are due to play on Friday nights along with the 3rd Division Funkies while the Youth team will play either on Saturdays or Sundays

WALKING FOOTBALL Locally, Walking Football should resume on Monday 25 February, weather permitting, and that should be followed at the end of February by the Masters F League with the usual four team competition. Walking Football is a mixed competition and age doesn’t matter much either. If you can walk you can take part!

NATIONAL ACTION It is also going to be a big year for football in Australia. At the moment the Olyroos have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics and the Socceroos have been invited to take part in the Copa America in Argentina in June. The Socceroos will be attempting to qualify for the 2022 World Cup but the qualifying matches due to be played in October and November last year, have yet to be rescheduled.

OVERSEAS KICKS In the Copa America, a twelve team competition, Australia has been drawn in Group B. Group B consists of Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador and Qatar. The Socceroos first game will be against Uruguay on 13 June followed by Paraguay on 17 June.

A TO W The A League is a twelve-team competition this season with the addition of Macarthur FC, a third team from Sydney. So far only two rounds have been played with Central Coast having won both of their matches leading the way ahead of Adelaide.

The W League still has nine teams and with three rounds played Canberra Utd with seven points from three games is a point clear of Sydney FC with Melbourne Victory in third spot.

MATILDAS RUN The Matildas have qualified for the Tokyo Olympics should they take place in July 2021 but even better news is that Australia and New Zealand will be the hosts for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup to be held in 2023. This will be the first time that the World Cup finals have been played in two different countries.

ENGLISH PREMIER In the EPL at close to the halfway stage, Liverpool leads ManU by a point with Leicester in third place. The 3rd Round of the FA Cup has been played with the big shock being Leeds getting beaten 3-0 by Crawley from League 2 and Derby losing 2-0 to non-league club Chorley.

HAIL EUROPA In European action, Atletico leads La Liga ahead of Real Madrid and Barcelona and in Italy, AC Milan is ahead of Inter, Roma and Juventus. In Germany’s Bundesliga, Bayern leads Leipzig

and Leverkusen while in France, Lyon is ahead of PSG and Lille.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK This week’s quote is from that doyen of commentators Martin Tyler “He had an eternity to play that ball… but too long over it.”

SWIMMING TO WIN Home Hill Swimming Pool

The Burdekin Amateur Swimming Club will host its 2021 Sprint this weekend, set to be an action-packed event to make waves for young swimmers. Hayden Menso ALTHOUGH the usual Burdekin heat hasn’t yet been around this summer, there’s no stopping local swimmers from enjoying their favourite sport. The Burdekin Swim Club will host its 2021 ML Partners Burdekin Swimming Sprint

Meet this weekend, going head-first with exciting plans for competitors. Burdekin Swim Club President, Brendan Casey, said all involved are excited for the weekend. “It’s coming along well. We’ve had great support from local businesses with sponsorship to make it all

happen.” With 255 registered swimmers, the event will see competitors from the Burdekin and out of town swim their strokes. “It’s the most swimmers we’ve had for this particular event since we’ve had it,” Brendan said. The event will open on

Saturday at the Ayr Swimming Pool, after a private meet and greet for the Burdekin swimmers. A highlight of the event is the attendance of Australian gold medallist Jessicah Schipper. A 100 and 200 metres butterfly swimmer, Jessicah has taken home gold at the

Olympic Games and World Championships in past years. “To get someone of her quality to conduct a series of sessions for 8-16-year-olds is amazing, and it is going to be a great benefit to them,” Brendan said. There will also be a Sunday training clinic with Jessicah, making it a full-on three days.

The Sprint will see competitors race in all strokes over 50 metres, with the event being North Queensland Swimming’s last meet where they can qualify for the Queensland Sprint Championships, held in February at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre in Chandler.

Masters success for junior golfer The school holidays kept the shots going for Jade Escriva, competing in Greg Norman Junior Masters for 2020 Jade Escriva

Hayden Menso

Jade on the driving range, supported by father Mick Escriva

WHILE most sporting codes wrap up late in the year, the school holidays kept local junior golfer Jade Escriva on course. Jade, 17, travelled with her family to the Gold Coast to compete in the 2020 Greg Norman Junior Masters from December 14 – 17th. Held at Palmer’s Gold Coast, Jade participated in the Under 15 Girls competition, where she was the only girl from North Queensland to qualify for the event. She entered the competition through her

successful gameplay at the Karrie Webb Masters held in Ayr in October last year. It was an eventful playing experience, with two of the four days washed out by heavy rain – a golfer’s worst nightmare. “It was hard playing conditions,” Jade said. “It’s a nice course when it’s in good condition; I like it. It’s all green and mostly hilly.” The December 2020 Masters was the second time Jade has played in the event; her first time was two years ago. “It’s good going away. You meet new friends and

see old ones from other competitions,” Jade said. With days one and four unplayable, Jade played an excellent 89 shot round on day two and 80 round on day three, across eighteen holes each day. She was also selected to represent North Queensland in a points challenge, where she placed runner-up. Jade, who has played golf since she was seven, was a fine representative for the Burdekin, just missing an overall position by only one nett shot.
