The council’s outdoor Social Club has made a generous donation to Ross Romeo’s CORES, using funds from their annual Christmas party to support the suicide prevention organisation. Club committee member Jim Cornford says the $300 donation was an excellent opportunity to thank Ross for his contributions to the club, and his talks with the men about maintaining their mental health. He says that the cause is something many of the members identify with and that having a healthy support network is what the social group is all about.

MEMBERS of the community came together on Sunday, 6th December, for the annual Table Bowls Competition at the Grand National Hotel in Ayr. The event takes place in memory of much-loved community member, Tisti Tavasci, and has been running since his passing in 2012. A field of 28 players enjoyed a day of brilliant bowls and catch-ups, a lovely opportunity to mingle. Although the competition was a pot luck draw, several lucky combinations came through on the day. The Winners of the Day were Kevin Dabelstein and Peter Doig, with Runners Up being Dennis Williams and Todd Horan.

Semi-Finalists were Darren Raitelli and Dave Jorgensen, and Peter Gillman and Jim Brock. Tisti’s daughter Paula Dowson said the day was a lovely event. “Everyone was happy to get together; it was a lovely, lovely day,” Paula said. “There was a barbeque, and people were happy to be out again and enjoy the event.” Players and organisers thanked the community for donations of cash and holiday prizes. The day was the first time this year the hotel has held a Table Bowls event, needing numbers to go ahead in line with COVID restrictions. Those involved can’t wait for the event next year.

When Jim Cornford of the Social Club realised their fundraiser raised more than needed to go around, he decided to support a local charity. Marina Trajkovich

“We spoke among the committee members and decided it was a good cause and to give it to CORES,” he says. “The suicide aspect is not something that we always talk about, but everyone knows somebody who’s been affected by it.” The club raises money to support itself by selling food to members, with funds going towards its social events. “We raise funds that way for our Christmas party and hold functions in between, just so we have a bit of a social network and gatherings happening throughout the year.” “There are people in our workforce who will have some issues so we keep an eye on them and make sure they’re ok. Anyone in the outdoor workforce can join the social club.”

All the performers at the 2020 Burdekin Community Christmas Carols on stage finale

Hayden Menso A DAY of Christmas Spirit, the 2020 Burdekin Community Christmas Carols was well and truly North Queensland’s Christmas event of the year. The event was a recordbreaker, making it the biggest crowd ever at a Carols event in our area, with an estimated 3,000 in attendance. With guest performers James Blundell and Jade Holland taking to the stage, it was a night of merry carolling and yuletide fun. Locals Perform Music, Rick Romeo, and Chris Quagliata also entertained the crowd with Christmas classics from sundown, with Townsville radio announcers Crystal and Brady from 106.3 keeping us laughing in between songs. An early visit from Santa was a clear highlight for the little ones. The Carols was a welcome chance to get out of the house, bringing back live

community events after the months-long hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The event also included the highly anticipated Burdekin Local News Giant Christmas Giveaway, created by the Local and generously supported by our leading Burdekin businesses which reached an incredible $4317 in value! Congratulations to Kate Lyne, our winner, and runners-up Tonya Manthey and Lyndell Antoniazzi who each won a live Christmas Tree from the Burdekin Garden Centre. During the event, copies of the Burdekin Local News were sold with every dollar donated to local charity, Aide for Aiden. The Local team is delighted to announce that from this community support we raised $756.25 to help Aiden and his family in their quest to purchase the specially equipped new car they need.

The Australian economy is now fighting back. Establishing the $1 billion JobTrainer fund to create free and low-cost training places for school leavers and job seekers. 100,000 new apprenticeships and traineeships, with a 50 per cent wage subsidy for businesses who employ them.

Lower Taxes for Households and Businesses Queenslanders will have more of their own money to spend on what matters to them, generating billions of dollars of economic activity and creating new jobs. Putting more money into the pockets of Australian households, with a tax cut backdated to 1 July 2020 benefitting 2.3 million Queenslanders. Lower and middle income earners will this year receive tax relief of up to $2,745 for singles, and up to $5,490 for dual income families compared with 2017-18. Thousands of Queensland businesses will be eligible for business tax incentives, helping 99% of businesses to immediately deduct the full cost of eligible assets.

Stepping out from behind the desk Hayden Menso

role are many and varied. “The Electorate Officer is basically the office manager, performing all the tasks required of the member, and also supervising when the member’s not there,” Julie said. “Also answering constituent’s enquiries, looking after the member’s diary, and travel requirements, serving people at the front counter, and liaising with departments to help them out with their concerns and enquiries.” Julie is finishing her time in the office, taking her longservice leave, a chance to slow things down and spend time with her family and friends. “At nearly 63, this is the time to take my long service leave. We’ve had an election; the member is now in his third term. I’ve had a few health issues – I’ve knocked on heaven’s door three times. It’s time to slow down.” Before beginning her leave, Julie reflects on her time as the Electorate Officer, which turns out to be one of much change in state politics. Julie was Officer during the amalgamation of the Liberal Party and National Party, forming the Liberal-National coalition in 2008. “It was interesting to watch that transition, going from one party to an amalgamation. Then Dale Last took over as the member under the LNP banner,” Julie said. The role is unique, only taken up by a select few over the years.

FOR Julie Lawrie, what she does for work is something she considers routine; it’s nothing special; to her, it’s her job. However, what you may not know is that her role as the Electorate Officer for Burdekin’s seat involves managing the local office and its day-to-day running. Julie began the role in 2004 during that year’s Queensland state election, with the election of Rosemary Menkens as the state member. “She asked me to apply for the position of Electorate Officer. I didn’t have any parliamentary experience per se [prior]. Still, I’d worked in two government departments, Queensland Health at the Charters Towers hospital, and then for Queensland TAFE for 12 years in Home Hill,” Julie said. “Rosemary was a teacher there, so she was looking for staff in the office, and she approached me to fill out the application form and do the interviews. That was March 2004.” Stepping fresh into the role was an exciting and new venture, but working with an old colleague made things easy. “Rosemary was phenomenal to work with. Dedicated to the job, she was very community-focused. I would travel and do interviews with her in Collinsville, Bowen, Townsville,” Julie said. Requirements of the

“It’s an interesting role. I believe that you have to have some innate empathy for people. Coming into the office, we get lovely people, and then we have people who come in who are upset and distressed because they’ve been going round in circles with a government department; they need someone to step in and say, “tell me what it’s all about.” The satisfaction of the job is rewarding but also challenging. “I never promise that I will get a result, but I will always promise that I will give it a go. That’s what I’ve done for seventeen years nearly. The successes have been good; we’ve had a lot of success with representation. In some circumstances, we don’t, but it’s always good to know that someone who came in and asked for help has had a positive outcome,” Julie said. It’s a little-known fact that Julie is the fifth-longestserving Electorate Officer in Queensland, an admirable achievement for the Burdekin region. “I think it’s an honour, and I think it’s an honour that the new member kept me on. I was honoured being asked to apply for the job because sometimes people say, “well, what do you do all day?”; it’s like, “what don’t I do?” “I think anyone in a job has a choice to leave that job, whenever. I’ve chosen to stay this long, and I think even though we’re public servants, we sometimes get a bit of a

Serving the Burdekin community over more than 15 years, Julie Lawrie is celebrating a rewarding career in our electorate office. bad rap. I’ve enjoyed it, talking to people and getting to know them,” Julie said. When government redistributed government electorate boundaries in 2017, the Burdekin took on other parts of the region due to being under its quota of enrolled voters. “It’s massive now. The boundaries take in from Julago to just south of Bowen; west to Clermont, Middlemount, Dysart, Coppabella, Glenden, all the way through. The bulk of the electorate is the Bowen Basin coalfields, and of course the grazing areas.” The electorate is a diverse one, not just the metropolitan towns we perceive as being the Burdekin. “Those communities are regional. They’re wonderful communities – it’s all about community for them. They want the doctor at the hospital; they need these

things,” Julie said. “The member at the moment is liaising quite actively for several issues out in that area, and he does it with the support of the staff in the office.” Julie’s experience in living out west has proved useful in her work, having lived previously North West of Pentland before relocating to Ayr in the 1990s. “It’s an interesting electorate. We have Elliot Springs and Julago, and then you come down and have AIMS and Abbott Point, all those big facilities. “The mileage that the member does is massive. When he goes out there, he basically has to go for a week, and he does it reasonably regularly,” she said. Though she had no politically active upbringing, Julie said she and her family were always encouraged to be free-thinking. And to make

their own choices. “Since working there, it’s completely opened my eyes to the political process. I think in Australia, we have a sound system. It works well when you compare it to large countries; people will buck, but look at us; we’re a free country. Right from the beginning, there was support to guide her through her new role. “Brisbane Parliamentary Services employ all the electorate officers as a government department. They conduct training days, and it’s fascinating to go to Brisbane and Parliament House. It’s a well-oiled machine. They are brilliant with their training.” “I will say I have the most phenomenal friends and coworkers that are just beautiful people. Working with them just made a great dynamic.”

Ayr Health Service receives heartfelt gift AYR Health Service patients are set to benefit from a generous donation by New Creation Church, Ayr. The donation, valued at $5,000, supported the health service to upgrade important equipment like medication and surgical instrument trolleys and purchase a newborn baby cot. Ayr Health Service Director of Nursing Tracey Gabiola said the donation was greatly appreciated. “We now have twelve new trolleys and the new baby cot means we have an extra for those times we have more than one newborn baby in the hospital,” she said. “New Creation Church Ayr are a wonderful group of people with a real focus on how their tithe can assist members of their local community which is lovely to see.” New Creation Church Ayr representative Jonathan Federici said the donation was made in line with the values and beliefs of the church.

Jonathan Federici and Ayr Health Service Director of Nursing Tracey Gabiola.

“The donation to the Ayr Health Service was made out of a heart of love and compassion for the sick,” Mr Federici said. “My wife is a nurse at the Ayr Health Service and asked the nurses and doctors for a wish list of sorts so we could ensure the donation would get the team items they most needed. “We came to understand that the equipment and surgical instrument trolleys and newborn cot would assist the health workers in their delivery of health care to the community. “We were delighted to be able to make this donation and know that it would translate to helping doctors and nurses care for the sick people of the Burdekin.” Mr Federici said the funds to make the donation were raised by the church group through their tithe. “We believe our tithe is to be used to share the gospel of grace,” he said. “It is also to share God’s love in a practical way in our community.”

GOLF CORES

End of Harvest Golf Classic a super community success Hayden Menso AFTER a successful crushing season, hundreds of crushing workers and community members took to the fairways for the 2020 End of Harvest Classic. Friday 11th December was a day full of fun and laughs, paired with some great, and not so great, golf. With 207 players across 38 teams, the event was the largest it has been in a long time, the Classic growing in popularity, with numbers up from 130 player in last year’s event. Organising Committee member Kelsey Shand said the day was enjoyed by all involved. “It was a really, really good day. Everyone was getting out there and having a bit of fun,” Kelsey said. With the golfing taking on an ambrose format, it was a chance for all players, no matter their skill, to enjoy the end of the crush. “I’m still lost for words with the support from the community. I’m very proud of our little community, and how they’ve shown support on the day.”

The Classic raised over $5,700 for CORES (COmmunity Response to Eliminating Suicide), to fund suicide intervention training programs in the community. “I’m lost for words. It’s very overwhelming, in a good way. We’re thankful to the community that they were able to help us out and give us as much as they could,” Kelsey said. “On the day, our major sponsor, Bray Valves and Controls, were out on the course selling drinks for a donation, which went to CORES in our total,” Kelsey said. CORES Co-ordinator, Ross Romeo, said the day was not only a fun outing, but a positive community event. “It was a really good community event, which is exactly wat the community needs, it needs to be getting back together again. They just had a fun day, and raised an incredible amount for us, so we’re so appreciative of that,” Ross said. “The big thing for me was seeing everyone together, having a good time, from all different walks of life. “I’d like to thank Wilmar,

Ross Romeo (CORES), and event organisers Kelsey Shand, Ben Smith, Luke Aroney

Kelsey, Luke and Ben, the main organisers; the sponsors who were terrific, and the golf club, they looked after everybody. But most of all, the people that turned up,” Ross said. The donation to CORES means the organisation can continue to do its important work in the community. “I’m constantly blown away by the generosity of the Burdekin community. That’s why we will always be there to support them in any way that we can. They were just a good bunch of people, having a bit of fun, and look how much money they raised, it was amazing.” Ross extending his thanks to those involved across the community. “The bulk of our workforce are volunteers – community people that give up their time, to train and support people. That golf day was all about community, and that’s what we’re all about,” Ross said. “More than anything, it’s for our volunteers that give up their time to support the community, I say thank you on behalf of all of them. “

CHRISTMAS IN THE BURDEKIN 11

thursday 17 december 2020

Proof in the pudding Gloria Lazzarini’s Christmas puddings have been delighting the community for 63 years. Marina Trajkovich HEARING the name Gloria Lazzarini in the Burdekin is often accompanied by imaginary wafts of her famed plum pudding, spiced and fruity with a hint of brandy. The ex-music and Italian teacher has earnt the evocation, through 63 years

obsessed with the British Royal Family and Gloria had decided to surprise her with a traditionally English plum pudding at Christmas. “For some reason, my mother always loved English royalty. I’ve got every book about the king and queen, my mother would buy every book.

WE WOULD GO OUT TO THE MARKETS AND THEN IT JUST GOT BIGGER AND BIGGER.

Gloria Lazzarini – Christmas pudding baker of perfecting the iconic Christmas recipe, now an annual staple of many family festivities throughout the region. Born into a traditional Italian family in Ayr, Gloria made her first Plum pudding in 1957 at the age of 17, serving the huge Italian community that would often gather around her mother’s dining table. “We had all family and people who used to come round those days. Mum would cook for all the farmers. “So I made my first plum pudding and it was a real treat because Italians knew nothing about plum pudding,” says Gloria. Her mother had been

“I’d been reading those because mum couldn’t read English, so I would read them to her and go through all the pictures. “And I thought ‘oh it’s all about this plum pudding at Christmas.’ So I thought, I could get involved and make a plum pudding,” she says. The pudding was met with enthusiastic feedback and so started the tradition of Gloria’s annual Christmas pudding, the recipe evolving over the years. “It was a very rich recipe and I had found it in the Women’s Weekly,” she says. “Somewhere that still exists but don’t ask me where it is now, the original recipe!” As Gloria got older, she eventually started to make

puddings as Christmas presents for her friends and the teachers of her children. “I started making them for people to give as gifts and I used to make heaps of them.” When her eldest daughter was attending boarding school in Townsville, she discovered the Cotter’s Market, suggesting that her mother bring the puddings to sell during the Christmas period. “I was still in my 20s then. I remember we made a hundred the first time and we sold out which was good. “We would go out to the markets and it just got bigger and bigger,” says Gloria. The puddings gained popularity, becoming a staple in the Burdekin when Gloria was approached by Tosh’s Convenience store and then Carla Dal Santo from Dal Santo’s Deli. “What really gave me a big name here in Ayr was Carla Dal Santo’s help,” she says. Gloria remembers being inundated with orders, staying up with the help of her friend Ellen Lund to create the puddings. “I’d sit up most of the night and cook. “We did make a lot in those days, we built it up really big. “I’ve always used raw sugar which wasn’t in the recipe but I’ve developed the recipe myself,” she says.

She’s expanded into Christmas cakes too and loves hearing the feedback sent in from families. Her daughter Luella, reads out some of the letters that Gloria has received. “They’re moist, that’s what people remark on the most. They’ve got that beautiful

smell when you open them of rum, brandy and sherry,” said Luella.

Burdekin Local News profiles members of the Kookaburras, the Salvation Army’s crisis workers doing incredible work in Ayr.

Stories of sweet salvation…

At 69, Lua Henaway has lived an incredible life, one that has been interwoven with the Salvation Army since she was six years old. From the organisation’s Christian school in her home town of Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, to working in the crisis centres of Ayr, Lua shares her story with Burdekin Local News. Marina Trajkovich LUA HENAWAY remembers her childhood well, the daughter of a poor, single carpenter working and living in shared housing in one of the poorest suburbs of Port Moresby. She recalls the day, at age seven, when the community cooks grabbed her, put her in a potato sack and locked her in the kitchen’s store cupboard. “I was nearly killed because we were staying in the men’s compound,” says Lua. “Because I was seven years old, I would run around. The older helpers in the kitchen, they had always watched me. “They grabbed me and

locked me up in the storage room. I was screaming, kicking and crying.” Lua is telling her story from her kitchen table in Ayr, a long way from her povertystricken upbringing in the struggling capital of PNG. She is wearing a colourful dress that reminds her of the island nation – and a frangipani in her hair – looking at a map of the country of her birth and the old photographs she treasures so much. Now 69, Lua, a preacher, has been involved with the Salvation Army for most of her life, moving through the homes of different family members and attending Koki Primary School, run by the

Salvation Army. “The Salvation Army church was not far from where my father worked,” she says. “We used to walk past when we were going to the market. “My father didn’t think it was safe for me to stay with him. He arranged, even though I was still young, to go to the Salvation Army School.” “I moved around a lot,” she says. It was a long walk to school - equivalent to walking from Ayr Hospital to Home Hill – before she eventually moved into housing built by the Salvos to accommodate families of children attending the school. She describes living in the housing built by the Salvation Army, taking turns to work in the kitchen before getting the bus to the school. “They did a kitchen breakfast for us of rice and tuna fish,” Lua says. “That was our breakfast before we would go to school. “We would practice choir and singing. We were very involved in the churches. “We would practice how to play the tambourine – that’s why I still play the tambourine. They taught us how to play music and all

those kinds of things.” But in grade seven of high school, her life changed forever – she fell pregnant with her first child at 16, following a relationship with a teacher from the Education School, a primary school run by the PNG government. The pair tied the knot in the Salvation Army church, Lua had grown to love. “I was a bit wild and looking for love,” says Lua. Lua lived with her new husband in their home nearby, going on to have four young boys. She later became involved with the Women of Council NGO, inspired by her upbringing with the Salvation Army and determined to make a difference to the lives of women and families in the region. “I ran a women’s group in Papua New Guinea,” she says. “We were a not-for-profit organisation run by Papua New Guinean women. We used to get aid from the Australian government, and with that aid, we used to teach our women how to sew and give them sewing machines. “I’ve got a photo of us here, all the women leaders in the National group. We are all

from different provinces in Papua New Guinea. I have a photo of us here, and I always carry it around with me.” It is through this work that she met Charlotte Henaway from Ayr, who was volunteering in Port Moresby with Ayr’s Christian Church group. What followed was a deep friendship, and Lua and her family began visiting the Henaway’s during school holidays, every year from 1980 onwards. When her husband passed in 1989, due to an asthma attack, Lua, then 37 was devastated but determined to continue her work. She began to spend more and more time in Ayr, developing a relationship with Laurence Henaway, also a widower, whom she eventually married in 2001, at the age of 49, becoming a mother to his two sons as well as her own, and a permanent resident of the Burdekin. The pair became instrumental in creating

the Gospel Outreach, an International church group, still operating from Cox street in Ayr, where they became renowned as preachers in the area before passing the torch to the next group of leaders. Lua decided to return to the Salvation Army, where she has been volunteering for the last 20 years, working in the stores and more recently, aiding in their crisis support from the Salvation Army church on Young st. It’s her way of paying back for the guidance, support and charity she received in her own formative years in Papua New Guinea. “Because you’ve been brought up by the Salvation Army you’ve still got that urge in you that you want to help people,” says Lua. When asked about the role the Salvation Army has played in her life, she starts to cry. “I was poor. The Salvation Army helped get me to where I am now.”

Top honour for Burdekin social worker

Kylie Vasta, from Ayr Hospital is thrilled to have won an allied health award for engagement and collaboration this year

Marina Trajkovich AN AYR social worker has been awarded Townsville Hospital and Health Service’s highest allied health honour for her engagement and collaboration with the

Burdekin community. Kylie Vasta was the recipient of a Townsville Hospital and Health Service Allied Health Award for her advocacy of patients receiving care at the health service. “My role is focussed

on acute social work interventions for patients and their families and carers,” she said. “I assist patients with planning their discharge from hospital, accessing other services that can help their

A boogie and a jive Marina Trajkovich MOVING to the beat, is what the ladies and gents from Old Time Dance are all about. The event, taking place in the St Helen’s Anglican Church Hall once a month is a chance to put on your dancing shoes and try out moves like the gypsy tap, Charmaine and festival glide to live music. Old time dance is an old sequenced dance style thats been around for hundreds of years, practiced before the development of modern ballroom and danced with partners at social occasions. The Home Hill dance hall has attracted keen participants for the last 17 years. Irene Richards has been attending the dance for twelve years and is now helping to run the event. She says it’s a great opportunity for people to come together, have fun and

get some light exercise on a Saturday night. “I liked it so much that I kept coming back. “You have your partner and you dance in a circle around the room. “They’re easy dances, you learn them at school.” “It’s a step down from ballroom. Most of the dances have waltzes in them,” says Irene. She says that for the people who attend the dance there is a deep sense of nostalgia. “Everyone knows how to do a gypsy tap,” she says. Although its mainly older people who come to enjoy the dancing, Irene says anyone can get involved and enjoy the evening. “My grandkids come and they can do it,” she says. “I play the organ, we have two accordions, two singers one playing the guitar and one playing the saxophone. “We’ll be playing a bit of Christmas music next week.”

She says that the dance is valued in the elderly community, but that if they don’t get more people to join they are at the risk of losing the event. “Our groups are getting less and less, we’re not getting more people,” she says. “It’s good gentle exercise and does the world of good. Dancing is good for the brain because you’ve got to remember the steps, it’s good all round.” Connect Now: The next Old Time Dance will be held at the St Helen’s Anglican Church Hall on the 19th December

health journey and assist them with matters relating to guardianship, capacity, aged care assessments and family meetings. “I am particularly passionate about overcoming barriers and promoting fairness for the vulnerable and disadvantaged. “I see it as part of my role to help patients and families to be empowered in their health care journey.” Kylie said she was honoured and humbled to have won the award. “I don’t expect compliments or accolades,” she said. “I truly believe you’re only as good as the team around you and I’m very fortunate to work with a dedicated, experienced and passionate allied health team, so to be nominated by one of these colleagues was truly an

honour.” Kylie said she’d worked hard in her twelve months in the role to be responsive to the needs to the community. “Winning this award was an opportunity to reflect on how far I’ve come since I started in the role,” she said. “It is reassuring to know that I’m engaging and collaborating with patients, families, colleagues and service providers in a way that positively influences the patient journey.” Kylie said as a Burdekin local, she is personally invested in the health outcomes of the local community. “A social worker has a key focus on the social factors that may have led to a hospital admission and the emotional impact of being in hospital,” she said.

“We help people navigate the health system and understand the multitude of real-life factors that impact on a person’s care and their life beyond hospital. “I would love to have more of a role in educating and connecting with the broader community to encourage proactive engagement in their health care.” Townsville Hospital and Health Service Executive Director of Allied Health Danielle Hornsby said the calibre of the nominations for the Allied Health Awards was outstanding. “It was also great to see a wide variety of nominations highlighting the exemplary allied health work going on across our organisation. “Congratulations to Kylie for her dedication to the Burdekin community.”

PUBS

Crown Hotel, Home Hill

of the Burdekin

In this series, we’ll take you into the saloons and behind the bars of some of the Burdekin’s much-loved watering holes, to meet the landlords, the locals and to discover what makes our pubs great. Hayden Menso KNOWN as Home Hill’s ‘middle pub’, the much-loved local Crown Hotel is a classic pub in its own right. Owners Marilyn Arnett and Mick Coles take pride in the food and drink offerings, paired with good old-fashioned service, making it a friendly local watering hole many locals enjoy. The hotel was opened in June 1913, and caught the eyes of the Marilyn and Mick in 2014 when it came onto the market Having worked in hotels in Hughenden prior to the purchase, it was a natural move to come to Home Hill. “I had two hotels out there, so I’ve always been in hotels. It’s always been my life,” Marilyn said. “We had been growing basil, after we sold those other hotels. But the weather got us down up on the Atherton Tablelands. One day when it was pouring down rain, it destroyed the Basil. So we said “bugger it, let’s go and buy another pub.” The thought behind moving to Home Hill was a simple, but effective one, meaning the rain isn’t the only thing pouring. “At least if it rains, people can still come in and have a beer,” she said. “We looked around and this one was on the market at a good price, and we thought with the experience that we had, we believed we could build it up and get it going,” Marilyn said. Having added to the hotel’s offerings over the years, the pair introduced the drivethrough Botteshop and gaming room, as well as the dining and function room, making it a place many local residents enjoy. Although many business have struggled through the pandemic, Marilyn said the Crown has been well supported in the past months. “I’m really appreciative of how the locals supported us through COVID-19. We were allowed to have our kitchen open and our bottle shop open, and I really appreciate that the locals supported us. “It got us through, and out takeaway meals

took off; everybody liked what we were doing” Marilyn said. “A lot of the customers that we picked up in that time are still supporting us, so it’s good.” The Crown is famous for its Thursday night Pool Competition, which anyone can compete in, with a chance to win big bragging rights and cash prizes. “All the locals come and play. They pay $5, and if they win, the winner takes all. We have a good crowd,” Marilyn said. The food is also a big part of the hotel, with the kitchen open and cooking seven days for lunch and dinner; the food menu available for takeaway and counter meals, plus homemade pizzas which are a hit. “Mick makes his dough fresh every day, for the pizza bases. That’s a good thing to offer for our kitchen, being fresh every day.” There’s also a chance to win big, with the Crown celebrating a recent Keno win in the thousands. “We had a very big win on the Keno. We’ve had smaller wins, but nothing in that size. Very lucky people,” Marilyn said. The win means one Home Hill resident and hotel local is $38,785 richer, picking all the right numbers in the game. The hotel employs five friendly staff, a mix of locals and seasonal workers. One of whom is Val Monti, from Argentina, who has just moved on from working behind the bar this week. “I was in Bowen, and I saw the advertisement that Marilyn was looking for a bar girl, and I decided to take it,” Val said. She has been at the Crown for the past seven months, and is moving to Brisbane to continue her travels. I’ve really enjoyed it here,” Val said. So whether you’re passing through Home Hill in need of a delicious counter meal, or fancy a stake in the pool comp, the Crown Hotel is where all the action is at.

Taking to the skies The NQ Dry Tropics team have travelled by chopper, surveying the Bowling Green Bay wetlands in search of the disastrous pond apple weed. Marina Trajkovich

NQ Dry Tropics staff took to the skies recently to search for invasive weed pond apple (Annona glabra) within the spectacular Bowling Green Bay Wetlands, south of Townsville. Wetlands Team Leader Scott Fry and Project Officer Shakira Todd joined Natural Resource Management Officer Matt Buckman from Hinchinbrook Shire Council in a chopper for a two day survey covering more than 600 kilometres of creek lines. The surveys were part of the Restoring Bowling Green Bay Wetlands project, delivered by NQ Dry Tropics through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program. Mr Fry said the woody weed was easily spread and if left unchecked would become very difficult and costly to control. He said that although it was well established in other parts of the state, it hadn’t yet been spotted in Bowling Green Bay Wetlands, and that

aerial surveying was critical to identifying and tackling infestations before they got out of control. “Pond apple fruit spreads by floating on ocean currents and establishing on the coast within mangrove areas, and it can be eaten by feral pigs, which transport the seeds inland,” Mr Fry said. “The weed forms dense thickets, impacting mangrove ecosystems and important fish habitat. “Removing it is a tough job because ground crews would have to negotiate difficult muddy terrain coupled with the presence of mosquitos, sandflies and estuarine crocodiles,” Mr Fry said. Mr Fry said luckily no pond apple was found on this trip, however, he urged local residents and the boating community to keep an eye out and contact NQ Dry Tropics with reports of any sightings. He said it was important to include photos, with the phone’s location setting on,

including close ups of fruit, flowers, leaves and stems. During the two-day mission, the team also assessed the area for other woody weeds, turtle nesting and dune damage. The Bowling Green Bay wetlands are a jewel in the lower Burdekin’s crown, internationally recognised as critical migratory bird habitat – and NQ Dry Tropics is spearheading the effort to improve its condition. Bowling Green Bay is one of only five wetland sites in Queensland listed under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance. Ramsar is the name of the city in Iran where the convention was signed to recognise wetlands around the world that were especially important according to a range of criteria, such as supporting habitat for water birds and endangered species.

Trees removed in safety act Hayden Menso OUTPOURINGS of sadness and intrigue have come from Home Hill residents this week at the removal of multiple Paperbark trees on Eleventh Avenue. The set of five Paperbark trees lined the footpath adjacent to the netball courts, and were removed on Wednesday and Thursday last week. Residents of the area told Burdekin Local News that there was no apparent reason for the lopping to occur, as the trees were doing no harm. However, an investigation has revealed that the Burdekin Netball Association undertook the action as part of their upcoming facility upgrades.

The Home Hill Netball courts on Eleventh Ave, Home Hill

President of the Burdekin Netball Association, Cara Trindle, said the association did not want the trees removed, but it came down to its players’ and members’ safety. “We spoke to the Council

about it before because it is on the land that we lease. “We have major plans to upgrade our facility, and stage one of it was to resurface our bottom two courts because they have quite a lot of damage to them.

There’s a lot of major cracking and lifting in places quite close to the baseline where those trees are, which isn’t safe,” Cara said. “We’ve had to make sure that we comply with the requirements to upgrade our

facility, to be in line with the current rules and regulations from the International Netball Federation,” she said. The trees were removed to comply with safety regulations and enable the upgrades to commence.

“Those five trees at the bottom of Courts 3 and 4 are only about a metre to a metre and a half away from our baseline; there were two rather large trees and a few smaller ones, one of them the roots were quite large and were impacting where our umpires go,” Cara said. Requirements mean any obstruction needs to be a minimum of 3.085 metres from the court baseline. “We knew it might upset some people; when we’re upgrading our facility, we need to make sure we comply with whatever rules and regulations are in place within Netball,” Ms. Trindle said.

Growing green A new South Asian agricultural enterprise is bringing unique, sustainable produce to Rita Island, and a new health food supplement. Marina Trajkovich A UNIQUE Sri Lankan bean isn’t what you would typically associate with the farmlands of Rita Island, but for farmer Kasilingam Kokulan, or Kulan as he is known in the community, they’re the start of a promising business opportunity. Originally from Sri Lanka, but moving to Bowen 20 years ago during Sri Lanka’s civil war, the farmer recognised an opportunity in Rita Island in the form of a moringa bean. The bean, originally grown in the Indian Himalayas and popular in Indian and Sri Lankan cuisine, is a hot commodity, exported to Asian Markets in Europe, India and throughout Australia. “It’s of Indian origin, it’s all over the world now and getting more popular,” says Kulan. “We’ve been doing this for the last year, but I’ve been

farming for a long time, nearly 20 years now.” Kulan grows eggplants, chillis and an assortment of Asian vegetables in Bowen but says that Rita Island has the perfect conditions for the moringa tree. He says the plant is unique because every part of the tree can be used, from the bean itself to the seeds, flowers and bark. The bean is split open to reveal a soft centre and small pods, eaten raw or scraped and boiled into South Asian curries to deliver a unique, punchy flavour. But it is perhaps the leaves that make the moringa oleifera plant so unique. Commonly used for its medicinal properties in Indian and Sri Lankan Ayurveda for thousands of years, the unassuming leaf is steadily gaining popularity in the health food market. “The biggest market is the leaves,” says Kulan.

IT’S COMPLETELY SUSTAINABLE FARMING.

Kasilingam Kokulan – Farmer “The leaf is very nutritious; it’s classified as a superfood. “More people know about it now.” Leaves from the Moringa tree contain 92 nutrients and 46 antioxidants placing it stealthily at the top of the superfoods list. Although he is only

producing the beans on a commercial scale at the moment, Kulan sees the greater opportunity in creating products derived from the leaves. He will be undertaking this venture within the next few months, learning to turn the leaves into a viable health

product and supplement. “We are thinking at the moment of trying to process the leaves, to dry them and make a powder. To make powders and capsules and probably tea,” says Kulan. Taking a moringa supplement can help lower blood-sugar levels, help reduce cholesterol which may, in turn, lower your risk of heart disease and help those with vitamin deficiencies. A single serving of the powder contains four times

the calcium of a glass of milk, more Vitamin C than seven oranges as well as double the protein and 15 times the amount of potassium of a banana. The practice of farming moringa is also environmentally friendly and sustainable, with waste turned to mulch. Kulan says there is also potential to use the branches and leaves in high nutrient agricultural feed, for farmers and their livestock.

Dancing the pandemic away What’s The show goes on for our dancers, even through a health crisis on Hayden Menso

OUR live events industry has suffered severe blows in 2020, and for some of our younger performers, it has been a callous time to keep the show going. Local dance schools have been working through restrictions, keeping classes online, and producing endof-year concerts in COVIDsafe ways. Melissa Torrisi from Simply Dance took a creative option, cancelling her live concert at the Burdekin Theatre, and showing a filmed production on the Stardust Drive-In Theatre’s big screen. “I wanted to make sure the students had a concert no matter what, and with restrictions that were constantly changing, I needed an idea that meant everyone could watch it with their family. The drive-in is social distancing at its best.” Melissa said a large amount of planning and logistical work was involved in bringing the movie-style event to life. “Dances need to be choreographed, costumes chosen, a production company hired, a filming schedule planned, filming locations found and booked. It was a great deal larger than a regular concert. One of the things we loved about our concert was we got to support other local businesses.” It was a new experience for all involved. “The students loved being movie stars and watching themselves on the big screen with their friends and family,” Melissa said. Jaynai Slatcher, principal of Rhythm Edge Dance Studios, said the restrictions were a big hit to her school’s operation. “It was simply being uncertain about what would best suit our studio families … the last thing I wanted to

do was turn too much focus on dancing when our families had so much else to think about,” Jaynai said. “We sure made the most of the online period and managed to sit students for 57 exams, prepare for competitions, and put together a large-scale showcase. It’s safe to say we didn’t let 2020 beat us.” Her concert was initially planned outdoors but moved back to the stage when it could. “I was about to spend close to $10,000 to have a stage transported up from Rockhampton,” she said. “I was extremely lucky; the staff at the Burdekin Theatre fully had my back and were behind me every step of the way. There is no way we would have pulled off a show, indoors or outdoors, without them.” Karen Healy from KHDance adapted her end of year concert to be performed outdoors for the first time. “The main challenge was trying to keep everyone in classes... they did Zoom classes, but it’s not the same as being in the studio with their friends,” Karen said. Moving outdoors was an easy decision, the concert taking place last Friday and

Saturday nights. “We thought if we couldn’t have the concert inside, we would move outside. Deciding where was easy; when we approached the Burdekin Roosters, they were very accommodating. They ran the bar and canteen both nights, and the grounds are beautifully kept; it couldn’t have been better,” Karen said. Karen said there is potential for the concert

to stay outdoors after a successful run on the footy field. “I’ve had nothing but positive comments and had many people asking us to do that again. The atmosphere was brilliant,” she said. “The kids were all great with restrictions. All in all, it’s been fine, we’re just looking forward to next year now. Bring on 2021.”

Brandon Bowls

On Friday night, the trio of Joe Yipanazar, Margaret and Ross McLaughlin fought out a draw with Ray Paneccassio, Doug Kiehne and Lyn Storrie. Rob Jorgensen and Simon Griggs put in a strong finish to overcome the challenge posed by Hans Baas and Gary Pearce. Merv Wilshere and Joy Woods finished full of merriment with their commanding victory over Jo Griggs and Rino Lazzarin. On Sunday, the trio of Con Sexton, Doug Kiehne and Peter Jorgensen grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and marched towards a big victory, and then Henry Hazel, Jamie woods and Alan Garioch found their groove in the last third of the contest, but it proved to be too little, too late. The match between Nev Dickinson and Vince Beitia, and Merv Wilshere and Gary Pearce started out like a championship match with unbelievable shots played, only for Vince and Nev’s bubble to be pricked with Merv

and Gary cruising to victory over the last few ends. Ken Ferguson and Richard Mau looked the goods with the way they started, and then Gary Nosworthy and Leo Kenny mounted a fightback, however Ken and Richie found their mojo claiming victory in the end. Matches will be on again on Friday night with names in by 6:00pm for a 6:30pm start; and on Sunday with names in by 1:00pm for a 1:30pm start. Next Sunday, the 20th of December, the jackpot must go off. Numbers will be continually drawn until a winner is found.

Home Hill Junior Cricket

Junior cricket club fixtures have wrapped up for this year, but for some of our players who were selected in North Queensland and Northern Flames teams there is more cricket for them to play in coming weeks at their respective championships. Our NQ Under 14 representatives, Rian Berryman, Salvatore Cardillo, Matteo Felesina and Corey Heidke have already played their zone championships in Townsville in which their team came second. A Northern Flames team was then selected from the Far North and North Queensland teams at the championship. Corey Heidke was selected in this team to now compete in the Queensland State Championships at the Gold Coast. Our Under 12s, Thomas Cardillo, Eamon Casey, Cooper

S. Darwen, J. Murray M. Nixon sponsor and C. Olditch

Lando and Ethan Pengelly will travel to Mackay for their Northern Zone Championships, as will our Under 13s Nate Di Bartolo and Nicholas Pengelly. Nicholas has been given the honour of captaining the Under 13 NQ side this year. The Under 16s will be playing in Bundaberg where Jack Gimson was selected as shadow. The boys

will no doubt gain invaluable experience and skill from their representative duties and come back better cricketers. They will also make new friends from all over Queensland from their own team mates and others they play against.

Delta Cleaners Night Soccer League wraps up for 2020 Cyclops The Grand Finals of the 42nd season of the Delta Cleaners Night Soccer League were played in surprisingly good conditions at International Park last Friday night. An excellent crowd turned up to see some very good games and then celebrate until late in the evening. There were 10 finals matches played and

as befits the occasion a lot of the games were very close. 26 goals were scored, four of the games went to shoot outs and another three were won by the smallest of margins. In addition the coveted Drinkers Trophy was contested. Mens A Grade UDS, last year’s beaten finalists defeated Oary’s Levellers 3-2 in a spirited

and sometimes fiery final. For UDS Jake Perry scored two goals and Cameron Butterworth one, not to mention his Sin Bin. For the Levellers a Jordi Zabel goal was added to a UDS own goal. At full time the score were level and the match went to Drop Offs. The Levellers scored two Sin Bins, Ramon Oar and Dennis Lawson. The Commercial Tavern Player of

the Final was Jake Perry from UDS. Mens A Plate Newcomers Hardly Athletic took out the title beating Shoot Your Shot 2-0 in the final. Chris Eadie scored both goals for the Athletes and Kelly Meinicke could only manage a Sin Bin for the Shooters.
