WE IMPACT WOMEN POSITIVELY BECAUSE WE’RE THE FRIENDS IN HER EARS. Mia! Mamamia Out Loud is a flagship show on the Mamamia podcast network; the largest women’s podcast network in the world (19million downloads and counting!). What makes your product such a phenomenon?

I think it’s because we are girlfriends having a catch-up. There are genuine chemistry and interest in what each of us has to say, which helps! You don’t form that dynamic overnight. Mamamia Out Loud has been a staple of our podcast network for almost five years. It’s always evolving, but the format itself has finessed over a long period. We always try to find the balance between what’s in her world and the news of the week. Having different age groups (Jessie is a millennial, Holly and I, Gen X) and very different backgrounds means we bring a variety of opinions. Which listeners say they love.

Holly! Mamamia Out Loud is now going on its second tour. What do you most enjoy about the live shows? The mixture of excitement and nerves when we’re doing live shows is unlike anything else we do. When we push through that, there’s just the best energy being in a room full of women who want to share, laugh and gasbag along with us. It’s absolutely one of the best professional experiences I’ve ever had, and I know the other two feel the same.

Jessie! In discussing broad-ranging topics, there are times you all disagree while remaining respectful. Did this come naturally, or with practice? Weirdly, this came naturally! I wasn’t sure it would to three people who didn’t know each other well. But our jobs require us to have debated several times a day to decide on the angle of a story. Pitching stories for the website needs us to be honest with each other. We have the same philosophy in the studio. We play the idea and not the person. There’s nothing more important in 2019 than having the ability to disagree respectfully, and I truly believe that!

Holly! Tell us your most memorable moment from being on the road together? I will never forget the time that we played Melbourne and Jessie had stomach flu. That sounds mean but is a testament to her, because even though she fought nausea through the whole show, she was as dry, funny and sharp as always. An absolute trooper.

We’ve all discovered a lot about each other doing these shows, and that’s part of the joy; being up there together, having each other’s backs.

Jessie! Your Mamamia writings take-the-mickey out of tabloid journalism while avoiding academic piousness. A part of me believes you’re creating a pioneering expression for women. What ideology guides your approach, and how does this influence Mamamia Out Loud? I am so flattered! A little over four years ago, I was at a crossroads. I was either going to embark on a PhD or start working at Mamamia. I’d never worked in digital media before, and they were taking a massive gamble. But I chose the latter. The reason was that I wanted to interpret and explore the incredible ideas that are sitting in universities and communicate them to the masses. I’m not sure I always do this, but I try! The average person, I think, is a lot smarter than media has traditionally ever given them credit for. Often popular culture is our way into the most exciting discussions and unpacking the world we live in.

Mia! Yours is a media company with a purpose; to make the world a better place for women and girls. How does Mamamia Out Loud positively impact women? For a long time, women’s media was considered a hilarious niche market. We affect women positively because we’re the friends in her ears. We’re there when she’s lonely or struggling, on her tractor in a drought-affected area, walking to work. We make her feel seen because the listeners are an enormous part of our show. They are in our Facebook group (Mamamia Out Louders), call our pod phone and send us emails. It’s a two-way conversation and always has been. Every piece of content we produce, and every single topic, is put through the filter: Does this make the world a better place for women and girls? It doesn’t mean all content needs to be serious and earnest. But making her laugh, making her think and making her feel part of a tribe all contributes to that core purpose. T A S I A North Queensland acting talent Tasia Zalar, who plays Shervone Shields in ABC miniseries Mystery Road, recently walked her first major red carpet at the TV Week Logie Awards.

As Shervone Shields in ABC miniseries Mystery Road, Tasia Zalar is mesmerising. So mesmerising that she was nominated for the prestigious Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular New Talent at the 2019 TV Week Logie Awards. The show was also nominated for Most Popular Drama Program and Most Outstanding Drama Series, so it was a massive night for Tasia and the Mystery Road team. “The Logies was an amazing experience because it gave the cast and crew an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate our achievements,” Tasia says. “It’s rewarding to know the show has been so well-received by the Australian audience and that they supported all of our nominations for Mystery Road.” Watching back her audition for Mystery Road, Tasia remembers thinking it was her best audition yet. “Shevorne is very strong. She holds her own amongst the main characters, including Jay Swan, despite the vulnerable circumstances of her situation that she has to keep secret,” Tasia says. “The undercurrent involved with the plot adds an element of intrigue as Shevorne hides her real intention from the audience until the end.” Filming on location at Kununurra in Western Austria, about 40 minutes from the Northern Territory border, was also a magical experience for Tasia. “Its landscape is so vast and breathtaking – it really helped set the scene for the Mystery Road story,” she says. “And working with the incredible array of actors was an amazing learning experience. They were all so encouraging and welcoming.”

“I’ve always been drawn to exploring what motivates people,” Tasia says. “It’s the psychological aspect – finding the inner monologue of the character.” Having grown up in Cairns, and with a love of immersing herself in sunshine and nature, moving to Melbourne at 19 was a big change for Tasia. “It was fun living in Melbourne for a few years, but I wanted to come back and reconnect with where I’m from,” says Tasia, who now splits her time between Cairns and Townsville. “I love that North Queensland is so beautiful and tropical. It’s where the rainforest meets the reef, so the scenery is spectacular. I feel a spiritual connection to this place.” As for what’s next for Tasia, she does have a project in the pipeline but it’s hush-hush until it’s officially announced. Tasia, who has also appeared in Foxtel’s Wentworth and ABC series The Straits, says her first time in front of the camera was making comedy skits with her friends when she was growing up. In her teens, she began to star in short films, with her debut being about a topic close to her heart – the high rate of youth suicide in Aboriginal communities.

Dancing. It’s in the genes for gorgeous Rhylee Hensler. “My grandma loves to dance,” Rhylee says. “She used to take my twin brother and me along to rock-and-roll classes with her, and I also studied classical dancing from the age of 10.” Growing up, it wasn’t all pliés and pirouettes for Rhylee though – she also enjoyed playing soccer, Aussie rules, touch football and basketball. “I loved growing up in little old Cairns – my two brothers and my older sister, and I were always playing in the backyard together,” Rhylee says. “The boys mainly played Rugby League while my sister and I tried everything soccer. My parents gave us four kids the world.” The resilience built up from playing sports came in handy during the intense audition process for Moulin Rouge. “I remember getting halfway through the audition and half of the girls had been cut,” says Rhylee, who was one of only three dancers to be offered a contract from the Australian auditions. “When I woke up to an email offering me a contract in Paris, I was so excited I ran downstairs to tell everyone. Mum almost cried; she was so proud.” After only three months of working at the Moulin Rouge, Rhylee scored the coveted can-can solo. “I absolutely love performing my can-can solo on the Moulin Rouge stage,” Rhylee says. “One day, I’d love to dance with the snakes in the pool.” Dancing the can-can looks effortless for Rhylee but, in truth, the shows take a lot of preparation. “It really takes the whole day to prepare for the show,” says Rhylee, who eats nutritional foods throughout the day, so she has lots of energy at night.

“I like to go to the gym for an hour before I start work at 7:30 pm and it takes me to about 8:20 pm to finish my make-up. “I also like to stretch and warm-up before being on-stage at 9 pm for the start of the show.” But when Rhylee hears the crowd’s applause, the effort is all worth it, especially when her family is in the audience. “The best show so far was definitely when my parents and godparents were in the crowd watching me,” she says. “It meant so much to me for them to come all the way from Australia to see me on that stage. The look on their faces will never leave my memory.” And although the audition for Moulin Rouge was cut-throat, the experience of being in the show isn’t as competitive as Rhylee imagined. “The girls at the Moulin are all so lovely – I really didn’t expect that,” Rhylee says. “I’ve made some amazing friends, and the Moulin has so many Aussies.” Although she’s been living in Paris for nearly two years now, Rhylee still struggles with the language barrier but is taking French lessons to help conversations run more smoothly. “I love living in Paris – my favourite thing to do is look for the best coffee by trying out all of the beautiful little cafes. There’s a charming area called Montmartre that’s very Parisian – it’s filled with cafes and coffee shops, so I love it.” As for what’s next, the talented North Queenslander sees herself staying at Moulin Rouge for some time but would one day love to do a musical in London or even some back-up dancing for professional singers. www.moulinrouge.fr

So many talented people come from the North. Each month we feature some who you may know and others we’d like you to meet. Tell us who else we should include.

Where are they now? I was born in Cairns in 1995 but now live in the USA where I’ve been travelling around the country working. I’ve been to many new places and met many talented people, like Golden Brooks (who plays Ruby in Hart of Dixie) on the set for Ladies of the Law. As well as producing a gluten-free baking show, I’m also currently editing a thriller short film about a conspiracy radio talkshow host and producing a documentary called How We Kept America Great. A couple of series I’ve worked on – A House Divided and Bronx SIU – were recently released on UMC.tv and Amazon Prime and I’ve also worked as a digital imaging technician for high-end commercials and am credited as

Born and raised in Townsville, I’m a proud North Queenslander who graduated from Kirwan High in ’92. I moved to Canberra two years ago as my partner got a mature-aged apprenticeship in carpentry and I’m missing my family and the beaches! With work I split my time between working on commissions for my Lairy Legs activewear line and a part-time job at Australia Post. The very early mornings mean that I have all day to keep up with my artwork commissions. I’ve recently sent a bunch to Townsville for Sue Tilley’s Drill Hall Studio & Gallery. The gallery is full of art and craft by some extremely talented locals. Last year I was invited to, and

took part in, a runway show for the first time. It was held at Albert Hall here in Canberra. The organisers are a worldwide collective called ‘RAW’ (rawartists.org), created and run by artists for artists. This was where I was discovered by Oxford Fashion Studio in London, who approached me about showing Lairy Legs at Fashion Week in either London, Paris, Milan or New York. My goal with designing Lairy Legs is to make people smile – for me, they are so much more fun than the boring black activewear. Customers have told me they love the feel and the gorgeous colours and, yes, they make them smile… mission accomplished!

And, although he’s been living in Los Angeles for over a decade, he hasn’t forgotten those roots… “I’m actually writing a TV series called Far North that’s going to be an Australian crime drama based in Far North Queensland,” says Nathin, who recently wrapped directing a film out in Alabama called Nothing Gold Can Stay. “It will focus on the cattle rustlers up in the Gulf of Carpentaria. So that will be the next few years of my life – writing and shooting that show.” Nathin was only 17 when, fresh out of graduating Townsville Grammar School, he was accepted into Sydney’s National Institute of Dramatic Art.

At 23, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a professional career in acting, where he landed roles in General Hospital, X-Men: Origins, and Australia and HBO’s The Pacific, among other film, television and theatrical projects. Most recently he played Nick Towne on Hawaii Five-0 and Ryan on the Hulu series Casual. Nathin credits his drama teacher from Townsville Grammar School with setting him on the path to becoming an actor. “Fiona Perry was an extremely inspiring and influential drama teacher,” Nathin says. “I wouldn’t have chosen acting as a career path if not for Ms Perry. My favourite memory from Grammar was playing Mack The Knife in the Three Penny Opera.”

Now living in Woodland Hills, California, with his wife Irina and two children Jetson and Kora, Nathin and his family spend most of their free time hiking, fishing or on some outdoorsy adventure. “We also have two dogs and a chicken coop out back that keep us plenty occupied,” Nathin says, adding that the family will be coming back to Far North Queensland to film Far North and looking for local talent to play in the story. “My mum, Valli, also lives just outside of Mareeba so visits to Far North Queensland are an absolute must for the Butlers! I love it there. It’s where my heart is.”

Located in a beachside setting, the architectural brief for this project was to design a contemporary, yet cost-effective threebedroom house, well connected to nature and featuring subtropical openplan living in a temperate climate.

The initial premise for the design was to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;re-interpretâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; the beach house by integrating traditional materials of corrugated metal, fibre cement sheeting and timber elements, onto a contemporary and dynamic shape. The restraints of a small site area, low budget and restrictions due to flooding, resulted in exploring the unconventional concept of a cantilevered structure, with both ends overhanging and counterbalancing each other. Using steel for the major structural elements, and timber for the secondary structure, a very economical and bridge-like architecture was created to inspire a soaring visual effect.

Working with a small budget required the use of innovative or unconventional details to achieve the desired design outcome. This house incorporates sustainable design principles and has been planned to take advantage of natural ventilation, passive solar design and very economical use of space. Building materials, with sustainable credentials, were used, such as plantation timber, bamboo for flooring, and plywood for ceilings. The abstraction of the timber-battened vernacular of subtropical architecture adds movement and scale to the house.

Parmesan & lemon thyme crusted pork cutlet with Agresto & ﬁgs in prosciutto SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS

METHOD

4 x 300 g (101/2 oz) pork cutlets, fat cleaned off 200 ml (7 ﬂ oz) ghee 4 fresh ripe ﬁgs, halved 8 prosciutto slices 2 lemons, halved and deseeded sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Agresto sauce

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Wrap the fig halves with the prosciutto and set to the side. Clean the top of the bones on the pork cutlets. Use a sharp knife to ensure there is no meat left on the bone. Not completely necessary, but it will make your dish look much nicer. Place the pork cutlets between two pieces of plastic wrap and lightly bash with a mallet or saucepan to flatten out. Crack the eggs in a bowl, add the milk and whisk together. In another bowl, add the panko crumbs, parmesan and lemon thyme leaves and combine. Place the flour on a plate. Season the pork cutlets and lightly flour them, dusting off the excess. Dip the cutlets into the egg mixture, covering the cutlets completely, then dip them into the breadcrumb mixture. Heat a large saucepan on the stovetop to medium-high heat with half of the ghee. Place two pork cutlets in the pan and cook each side until golden brown. Once browned, place the cutlets on a tray lined with baking paper. Strain the ghee through a sieve, wipe out the pan and add the remaining ghee. Repeat for the remaining cutlets. Place the wrapped figs flat side down on the pan and cook for 1 minute. Place on the tray with the pork cutlets and bake in the oven for about 12–15 minutes. Remove from the oven and rest for 2–3 minutes.

Buttermilk vanilla panna cotta with berries, lemon myrtle & honeycomb SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS

METHOD

Panna cotta

300 ml (101/2 fl oz) buttermilk 125 ml (4 fl oz) cream 1 piece gelatine leaf, soaked in cold water 65 g (21/4 oz) caster (superfine) sugar 1/4 vanilla bean, split and scraped 4 plastic dariole moulds

Whisk half of the cream until it forms soft peaks, set aside. Heat the other half of the cream in a small pot until quite warm (not boiling). Add the vanilla and gelatine. Remove from the heat and whisk until gelatine dissolved. Add the buttermilk to the cream and gelatine mix and mix well. Transfer into a bowl, add the whipped cream and whisk in until both have incorporated together. Lightly coat the inside of the dariole moulds using a spray oil and ﬁll with the panna cotta mix. Refrigerate overnight.

This support provided is not just for their academic achievement but also their social and emotional wellbeing. “Education has evolved to create school environments where students are inspired to learn and use their talents. This experience has now advanced our student interest and participation in the Queensland Human Powered Vehicle Super Series. The Human Powered

Vehicle Endurance Challenge aims to help develop efficient, environmentally friendly or sustainable vehicles as forms of transport, as well as using emerging technologies in ways to help further students’ education. We have already competed in the 18 hour Whitsunday STEM Challenge, placing second in the Mixed Senior division, and will be taking part in the Fraser Coast Technology Challenge for the 24 hour endurance ride later this year. Recently, the STEAM Dream Team also exhibited in the 2019 Strand Ephemera. For over nine months our STEAM team explored the concept of illuminating and highlighting the importance of the star constellations that feature above Townsville and considered

the importance of connecting with the world beyond in order to connect with ourselves. Future Astronomers Illuminated was showcased in the 2019 Strand Ephemera Exhibition and was highly appreciated by all. Planned to be one of the most extensive secondary schools facilities in North Queensland, the facility contains 3x 1000L freshwater tanks which houses up to 60 barramundi (Lates calcarifer) and 120 red claw (Cherax quadricarinatus) at any given time. A facilities upgrade is underway and will soon include 2x2000L saltwater pools to grow Queensland groper (Epinephelus lanceolatus). Students become experienced and skilled in aquatic animal husbandry, tag and release, water quality and systems maintenance. Fish and vegetable production are used to support food preparation by hospitality and food technologies which in turn are used in a composting system.

Bringing 38 years of experience with Brisbane Catholic Education to his role as Director of Learning and Teaching with Townsville Catholic Education, Peter Stower taught in primary classes before becoming a principal for 19 years. He then accepted a senior leadership role supporting learning and teaching across 13 schools in the Brisbane archdiocese.

Now, as Director of Learning and Teaching with Townsville Catholic Education, Peter and his team are committed to supporting the 29 schools across the diocese and the 2500 staff working in those schools. “The role of Director of Learning and Teaching is both exciting and full of challenges,” Peter says. “Coming to a new diocese,

After much loved Executive Principal, Mr John Livingston tragically passed away from a brain tumour in 2015; the Kirwan High Community turned this heartbreaking moment into a movement of hope by championing The Cure Starts Now. The North Queensland based foundation funds children’s brain cancer research with a focus on DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma). DIPG is the most aggressive form of children’s brain cancer, and there is currently no cure. Ren Pedersen, Director of The Cure Starts Now (Australia), lost his daughter Amy to DIPG and leads the national charity from Townsville. Through fundraising initiatives, including hosting the annual The Cure Starts Now Gala Dinner, Kirwan High and supporting local businesses, aim to raise $69,000 this year for the cause. This amount will bring the total raised by the school to $350,000 in five years. Both The Cure Starts Now, and Kirwan High are strongly committed to continuing this work until a “Home Run Cure” is found. Kirwan High has taken to heart, that the cure starts with them and thanks the local community for their continued support. Kirwan High, a great school … a good place to be!

The former dance instructor made study work for her by doing a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) externally. “Working with young children, teaching them how to dance and instructing them really captured my love of teaching,” Bianca said. “By studying at JCU I was able to do this externally, which fit perfectly into my lifestyle, as I needed to work full-time and I had a young son at the time. It was flexible and I really found that this was a wonderful course for me to start doing that.” As well as the flexibility of being able to study when and where she wanted, Bianca appreciated the

support she received from her lecturers and peers. “Being able to do it online in the comfort of my own home outside of work hours when I wanted to, was a great flexible way to study,” she said. 3D Radiography The face, jaws and teeth are 3-dimensional structures. The use of 3D radiographs (e.g. Computed Tomography or CT imaging) allows the orthodontist and maxillofacial surgeon to more accurately assess patients compared to traditional 2D methods. 3D imaging can be very beneficial for patients presenting with facial trauma and/or asymmetry, as such imaging can clearly identify the regions of the face that may require surgical correction and precisely how much correction is required. 3D imaging is also extremely useful to identify the best methods to treat pathology and to safely manage impacted teeth (e.g. canines and wisdom teeth).

The Next 20 Years There is no doubt that technology has improved many aspects of modern life and will continue to improve the delivery of orthodontics over the next 20 years. All health practitioners have a responsibility to provide the best possible care for their patients and to keep up-to-date with new developments in their field. However, mere information cannot replace knowledge and clinical experience. Your specialist orthodontist has the expertise to determine if emerging technologies are actually worthwhile and cost-effective, rather than recommending it indiscriminately for every patient. Run like a girl Running is a mental sport, and we are all insane. To be a runner, you have to take the first step. If you think long distance runners are half crazy, you’re right. An impressive 61% of half-marathon finishers are sports-bra wearing, pony-tail flicking women! Natalia and I started our longdistance running journey in 2011 when our father signed us up to a half-marathon in New Zealand. Six years later we have run numerous half marathons and seven marathons between us, all before the age of 25. After finishing our first half we realised how satisfying the mental and physical challenge

was. It pushes your body to limits you never thought you could reach. You must be your own motivation and support team in your own mind. There is no one to tell you to do one last effort, to push that bit harder…it’s all YOU. A couple of years later we watched our father hit the streets of New York City for the world-renowned annual marathon, which is where we truly developed a passion for running. The excitement and joy of the finishers was contagious. Running is no doubt one of the

best types of cardiovascular exercise you can do for the entire body. It’s great for circulation, endorphin release, stress relief, strengthening, and heart health. If you are a total newbie, or are returning after a long break from running, follow these simple tips to becoming/ returning to being a runner (and loving it): 1. Start small. Start off slow and work your way up to longer distances and faster speeds. Generally, you should run at a pace that allows you to maintain a conversation. I sometimes call my sister overseas for an hour to pass time or use it as an opportunity to catch up with girlfriends. 2. Tune into your body along the way, it’s the best coach you’ll ever have. 3. Create or follow a playlist that will motivate, inspire and get the adrenaline pumping with an appropriate tempo and upbeat music. 4. Take it outside. It’s much easier to lose track of time and a great opportunity to watch the sunrise. This can have a huge impact on your overall mood and can be a great way to de-stress. 5. Maintain motivation. Running within your comfort zone creates a momentum that fuels motivation to continue to run consistently.

6. Set goals. I sometimes use speed bump-to-speed bump up Castle Hill or Juliette’s to the Waterpark along the Strand. This way you can have a little high-five moment each time you reach these points. 7. Experience running from the sideline. Go to the next Townsville park run or Road Runners Race. As it did for my sister and me, it is a great way to ignite a passion for running. 8. Pick up an upcoming race and actually pay the registration fee. This will motivate you to reach your goal, even more so if it is charitable! 9. Keep track of your runs with running Apps such as MapMyRun, Nike Running Pro or RunKeeper. 10. Break up the distance with strength-based exercises for your hip stabilisers, back and core. These muscle groups are important for injury prevention and endurance. Try doing one loop of the Strand Rockpool, followed by a core or glutsbased exercise in between. Maybe running isn’t for everyone, but you won’t know until you try. Our best tip is to power through—when you’re starting out, the fight is as much mental as it is physical. Always remember, as with most challenges in life… MIND OVER MATTER.

Ever hesitated to give money to the homeless for fear of where the money may go? Two 20-something social entrepreneurs have solved that problem with a smart concept called The Good Box.

On any given night in Australia, over 110,000 people experience homelessness. It’s a startling statistic, and one many people feel powerless to change, but not Queenslanders Gali Blacher and Maddy Jones. Gali lives in Townsville, while Maddy lives in Brisbane, but it was in Sydney the two met and joined forces to co-found social enterprise The Good Box in 2018. “While working in Sydney’s CBD, Maddy and I saw that most of the passers-by ignored the homeless community,” Gali says. “We also noticed that many people wanted to help but didn’t want to give money as they were concerned about where it may go. That’s how I came up with the idea of The Good Box – a box filled with goodies that can be purchased by someone and given directly to an individual experiencing homelessness.” opposite: Gali Blacher and Maddy Jones were working in Sydney when they met and joined forces to co-found social enterprise The Good Box in 2018.

Instead of relying on donations, The Good Box is a nation-wide social enterprise that relies on sales of the boxes to keep doing good. There are three different boxes available to buy online at www.thegoodbox.com.au – a Blokes Box, Gals Box and Goodie Box. They only cost $19.99 and you can either buy a box to give to a homeless person yourself or write a personal note and let The Good Box’s distributing partners, including Yumba-Meta in North Queensland, give it out on your behalf. “We have amazing volunteers, and 35 per cent of profits go to our partner charities – Orange Sky Laundry, Share The Dignity and Jewish House – who are all experts in the homelessness space,” Gali says. “The great thing about The Good Box is that, not only are we helping the everyday person to give but we’re also helping the homeless community, who decide what goes in the boxes.

Items include everyday essentials, such as food and deodorant, as well as items, we sometimes take for granted, like a haircut or movie ticket. “I am so passionate about The Good Box because it’s not only a beautifully packaged gift but it’s also a vehicle to an essential conversation,” Gali says. “It’s about breaking down barriers between those who are homeless and those who aren’t and abolishing stigmas. We had a lady who said she’d always judged those experiencing homelessness and never believed she could end up homeless herself. That is until she bought a Good Box for a homeless person she often saw near her house…” The lady took her sons along to give the homeless man the box, which started a pleasant conversation where they found out he was an educated man who’d become homeless because of some unfortunate events. The discussion opened her eyes, and she’s become an avid buyer of Good Boxes. “There is no hard and fast answer as to why people become homeless,” Gali says. “Homelessness is multi-faceted and not linked back to any one reason. That’s why the illustrations on each box tell the true story of a person experiencing homelessness. I love that this concept has the power to develop more understanding of, and kindness towards, those who are less fortunate.” In turn, it can change how the homeless view themselves, with one Good Box recipient saying: “The Good Box has helped me feel important and that the community care about me. Everyday across Queensland, seniors and older people continue to make an important contribution to our state’s

thriving communities. Our older Queenslanders have spent many years playing vital roles in their workplaces, families and

communities, however we know that many seniors are facing cost of living pressures well into their retirements. To help ease the cost of living pressures for seniors the Palaszczuk Government will be providing more than $283 million in senior concessions over the 2019-20 financial year. Through the Queensland Seniors Card scheme and concessions, seniors can save up to $400 a year on energy costs, $120 on water bills, $200 per year on rates, and up to 50% on their car rego. Queensland is also the only state where seniors can enjoy concessions on motor vehicle and boat registrations, dental, medical aids, electricity and gas, spectacles, public transport, fishing licence fees and entry to Queensland Government museums and art galleries. The savings don’t stop there – more than 6,500 participating businesses in Queensland (and many more across Australia) are offering discounts on goods and services for Seniors Card holders. There’s even an online discount directory to help make the search for discounts even easier. With savings like these, it’s easy to see why more than 850,000 Queensland seniors now hold a Seniors Card. We know there are still seniors out there who aren’t aware that they are eligible for

From September 2019 to June 2020, we’ll be sending out special teams across Queensland, to help Queenslanders apply for their concessions and Seniors Card. These teams will visit prominent shopping centres and help local seniors sign up for the service. Details and locations for this concessions and Seniors Card roadshow will be available soon. But you don’t have to wait for the roadshow to visit a location near you. There’s an easy application process that can be completed online. Just fill out the application up to two months before your 60th birthday for the Seniors Business Discount Card, or your 65th birthday for the Seniors Card, and you’ll be issued with the card that best meets your eligibility. 23-year-old Brody Finlay’s striking similarities to Elvis Presley has attracted the attention of Baz Luhrmann, in the search for the ultimate actor to play ‘The King’ in an upcoming film. If you saw Brody down the street in his civvies, you likely wouldn’t recognise him as Elvis. But on donning blue-suede-shoes, he transforms into one of Australia’s premier Elvis Tribute Artists. Even as I type these words, Brody is likely belting out You Ain’t Nothing But A Hound Dog. As an Australian representative at the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Conference in Memphis. “I’m one of 19 competitors from around the world, with only two Australians contending.” To be afforded a place in Memphis, Brody took out wins at the Parkes Elvis Music Festival and Viva Surfers Paradise Tribute. Beyond his victories though, Finlay’s extraordinary attention to detail in portraying Elvis authentically more likely caught the attention of Baz Luhrmann. Finlay’s got the arm swing down, the sashaying knees, the raised eyebrow timed over melodic peaks. He even uses the same company that produced Elvis’s costumes to create his own, saying, “Authentically expressing Elvis underpins everything. I want you to feel like you’re watching Elvis right back in that time.” Brody was fine-tuning his Elvis set alone in his room at home when the call came. “I didn’t recognise the number, but wow, I’m glad I answered; it was a call from Baz Luhrmann’s office! I was like, ‘what the heck is happening here?’ I never auditioned for anything! She asked me if I’d heard about the movie and said they thought I’d be good for the part if I wanted to audition.” Uncannily, Townsville-based Finlay, and his muse, Elvis Presley, share more in common than dazzling costumes and molasses dipped vocals. In their younger years, they were both told they couldn’t sing.

By her admission (and even while being his most enormous fan) Finlay’s mother had gone on the record saying, “Brody couldn’t sing when he was younger.” The Tribute Artist doesn’t shy away from this memory either. “It’s true. When I was little, I wasn’t much of a singer.” Uncannily, Elvis The King himself shared a similar trajectory. Receiving a resounding ‘C’ in music in eighth grade, Elvis’s teacher didn’t beat-aroundthe-bush when telling him he had ‘no aptitude for singing.’ Fortunately, that didn’t stop Elvis, and some 60 years into the future, it hasn’t stopped Brody, either. So just how has Brody arrived at his knee-sliding performances of today? “Initially, I was in a Rock and Roll band with my father and friends. I played the saxophone at that point and wasn’t much of a singer. But my voice started to develop, I sang some songs, and people highlighted that I sounded like Elvis.” “Personally, I think Elvis was most sublime in the 50s, that’s when he made it big. Watching him perform in that era; the energy in the crowd is phenomenal, people are just screaming!” As to whether Finlay got the gig in Baz Luhrmann’s pending film, he reverts to consummate professionalism, stating “I can’t comment at this time.” Either way, the parallels between Elvis, Brody, and their respective following of screaming fans seems something like star-crossed alignment. They are keeping the Burning Love for Elvis’s reign blazing still.

Geoffrey & Jodie Walsh Tell us about the proposal? We had been together for 10 years before Geoff proposed. Our very first date was a picnic, so Geoff decided to visit memory lane and propose over a picnic he set up in the middle of our lounge room. We decided to stick with this theme throughout and had a picnic for our engagement shoot as well as put together the biggest picnic we could, our wedding. Tell us about your dress? My dress was from One Day Bridal. It had a huge and beautiful train, was an off the shoulder style and I loved that it was simple, elegant and classic so that it could last the test of time. Where did you hold your ceremony and reception? Laloli Gardens is a beautiful property that was a blank canvas that allowed us to have our ceremony and reception all in the one place and exactly how we imagined it. It overlooked mountains and sugar cane as well as Cairns’ Walsh’s Pyramid which we thought was fitting. What was a funny thing that happened at your wedding? The speeches were probably one of the funniest parts of the wedding. Every speech just kept getting better as they went on. Tell us about your most memorable moment? The entire day was unforgettable. Jodie – Seeing my Dad and Geoff’s faces when they saw me in my dress for the first time, as well as celebrating with everyone we love. Geoff – Seeing Jodie walk down the aisle, I was so proud, she looked so beautiful. Where did you go for your honeymoon? Bali for 15 days. It was amazing to relax after such a big week. So when Michelle Haydon, owner of the Bridal Palace in Townsville, found out she was a state finalist she was thrilled. “I went to the awards night in Brisbane completely satisfied with being one of the four finalists,” Michelle says. “The other finalists were Brisbane and Gold Coast stores, so when they announced ‘Bridal Palace’ as the winner I was a little shocked!” The awards are based solely on customer surveys. A total of 9,290 couples voted this year for Queensland, rating Quality of Product, Quality of Service, Attitude of Staff and Value for Money. “We won the Bridal Gown Boutique category with a 99.91 per cent customer satisfaction rating, which just blew my socks off,” Michelle says. “I’m so thankful to all of the brides who took the time to say such wonderful things about the Bridal Palace.”

Customer service is so important to Michelle that she’s opened on closed days for out-of-town brides and pleaded with labels to get a dress in weeks instead of months for girls who’ve needed something in a hurry. “There’s so much you can achieve if you just go that extra mile, that’s what we do,” Michelle says.

On his way home from work, he collected the ring from the jeweller and upon arrival got down on one knee. In the kitchen of all places. Before dinner at A Touch of Salt that night. Tell us about your dress? My dress was the Harlie Dress by Made With Love. I purchased it from Michelle at The Bridal Palace in Townsville. Michelle was such a great help, so genuine, kind and honest. I can’t recommend her enough! Where did you hold your ceremony and reception? We held our ceremony at Sacred Heart Cathedral and followed with the Reception at the family property. What was a funny thing that happened at your wedding? The funniest thing that happened at our wedding would have to be the hitchhiker we picked up on the way to our reception. Tom was from Madagascar and had been backpacking around Australia and was hitchhiking with hopes of scoring a lift to Airlie Beach. Tom thought he’d found his lift south when our bus pulled over, but to his surprise, greeted by two newlyweds and their Bridal Party. After accepting our invite, Tom partied on with us long into the night, slept in the bus and even helped clean up the next morning, before eventually heading to Airlie Beach. Tell us about your most memorable moment? There were many memorable moments that we’ll always cherish. But having everyone we love most, all together celebrating our marriage, partying until the sun came up would be our most memorable moment. Our amazing singer Tammy Moxon and her band were convinced to stay on until 3:30 am, keeping everyone dancing into the wee hours! Where did you go for your honeymoon? Honeymoon is still yet to come! Johno and Morgan Whelan Tell us about the proposal? It was a total surprise! Johno and I had gone on a trip to visit my sister and her fiancé on the Sunshine Coast. We took a day trip to Rainbow Beach, where my family and I had lived when I was younger. We walked up to Carlo Sand Blow and had walked to the very edge of the dunes to look out over the ocean. It was a beautifully sunny day, and we were admiring the view when Johno got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife! Johno knew this is my favourite place in the entire world, so it was a very special moment in my life, and I will never forget it! Unbeknownst to me, I actually carried my engagement ring in my handbag on the flight down! Tell us about your dress? My wedding dress is by Pronovias and purchased from White Lily Couture in Brisbane. It was nothing I thought I’d ever wear but once I put it on I couldn’t imagine myself in anything else! Where did you hold your service and reception? We held our ceremony under a beautiful tree in a paddock. And the reception was on the airstrip in a marquee. Both locations were at Bumbleginny – Johno’s parents’ property. What was a funny thing that happened at your wedding? The entire afternoon spent with our bridal party while getting photos taken, and also the speeches! Our stomachs hurt from laughing so much. Tell us about your most memorable moment? It’s so hard to pick a memorable moment when the entire day was the most memorable moment of our lives! But seeing each other for the first time and exchanging vows was a special moment. The celebrations with all our friends and family were also equally memorable. Where did you go for your honeymoon? Johno and I decided the week of the wedding to go on a short honeymoon to Byron Bay. She played Grow Old With You on the ukulele and then proposed. Tell us about your dresses? We both have very different styles, which tied in so well together on the day. Sam wore a stunning dress from a small bridal store in Cairns. Tara had a top and skirt combination, finished with a fedora hat from Will & Bear, which was her favourite part. Where did you hold your ceremony and reception? Our ceremony was at Anderson Park Gardens. We ride our bikes and walk our dog there, so it was special for us. We then had our reception in our backyard, which was beautiful and intimate. What was a funny thing that happened at your wedding? Our speeches also involved our three-year-old nephew, James. Amongst his gibberish, he managed to announce Sams sister and Maid of Honour â&#x20AC;&#x153;had a baby in her bellyâ&#x20AC;?! A hilarious but also special moment because only close family knew at that stage. Tell us about your most memorable moment? The ceremony had almost 90 of our closest friends and family, but as soon as we saw each other, it was like no one else existed. We were lost in each other. Where did you go for your honeymoon? Bali. Jayde and Luke Lancini Tell us about the proposal? Our proposal occurred on our anniversary, the 1st of September. We went for a walk down to Alice River with our dogs. Once we had reached the river, Luke got down on one knee, and of course, I said yes. Tell us about your dress? My dress was French crepe in ivory. It has a low U back with white buttons following down towards the long train. Where did you hold your ceremony and reception? We had our service at Sacred Heart Cathedral, and the reception was at my parents’ place in Rangewood. What was a funny thing that happened at your wedding? A funny moment was when Luke’s brother Mitchell and brother in law, Ben were hiding from their partners as they didn’t want to leave the party. While looking for a hiding spot, they both fell into the creek at the back of my parent’s place that is full of Chinee apple bushes. Later in the morning my uncle Craig went missing, we found out he had also fallen into the creek and passed out for a few hours. What’s even funnier is that this was the main area all the boys used as ‘the toilet’. Tell us about your most memorable moment? For myself, walking down the aisle and watching Luke’s reaction. Luke Seeing Jayde for the first time that day. Where did you go for your honeymoon? Melbourne, we are massive food lovers, and we just wanted to eat. Kate and Ryan Hadley Tell us about the proposal? Ryan proposed in the middle of Central Park in New York City with a ring from Tiffany & Co. Where did you hold your ceremony and reception? We were married on our eighth anniversary and wanted to have it somewhere meaningful and personal. Ryan’s family home was that place for us; he grew up there; it’s familiar and welcoming; many of our guests already knew it well. Ryan’s parent’s garden is also quite famous (in the family) as you will often find quirky creations there, like the built-in chess board and framed succulents hanging from the back fence. What was a funny thing that happened at your wedding? We had a generous space in time between the ceremony and the reception. Mainly because we wanted plenty of time for photos, but also because the garden had to be re-set from ceremony to reception. To get all our guests out of the garden, we surprised them with an ice cream truck that showed up just after the service. Tell us about your most memorable moment? At our reception, we played the ‘shoe game’. It was all in good fun with questions like “Who is the better driver”, “Who is more likely to burn the house down when they’re cooking” etc. Then we used the last question to announce to our guests that we were expecting baby Hadley. “Whose due date is in January 2019?” Where did you go for your honeymoon and why? We didn’t have a honeymoon. Instead, we focused on our next big adventure, preparing for the birth of our son Kit. Their ‘best’ were woefully unprepared and appeared to have given up before we’d even warmed up. Much like the Cairns Taipans. What’s the most appropriate name for Cairns newborns? Poor Unfortunate Souls. What has Townsville got that Cairns doesn’t? Johnathan Thurston. Cairns has the Taipans, which is no compensation whatsoever. Say you’re appointed by the Qld Premier to unite our two cities. How would you do it? An Area 51-style invasion, minus the alien cheek-clapping. Peace through superior firepower. Who’d win a roast battle between Cairns Mayor Bob Manning and Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill? Definitely Jenny. If all else fails, a flying elbow drop off the top of Castle Hill onto the Cairns mudflats should score the pinfall. One, two, three.

Obviously, I avoid going to Cairns but on the occasions when I have been obligated to go, I’ve noticed a deep sense of regret and disappointment… as tourists get off the plane. What are some of the most appropriate names for Cairns newborns? Citrus Magik, Harpik Whyte, Lemon, Glayde Plugins, Ajaxx, Organika, Febreeze, Pine-Apple or Pi-Nappel, Braeleen – gender neutral name. What has Townsville got that Cairns doesn’t? Class, style, dignity…should I go on? Say you’re appointed by the Premier to unite our two cities. How would you do it? Naked mud wrestling to highlight Cairns’ most notable asset. Who’d win a roast battle between Cairns Mayor Bob Manning and Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill? Duh! Jenny Hill of course… she’s a woman. People from Townsville love to call it the ‘Unofficial Capital’ of Queensland, but Townsville isn’t even the ‘Unofficial Capital’ of Ingham. What’s the most appropriate name for Townsville newborns? Going by the same formula they used to name Townsville I’m going to say the most popular name for newborns is Childkid. What has Cairns got that Townsville doesn’t? The Daintree Rainforest and The Great Barrier Reef. Townsville has dust and a botanic garden with only palm trees in it. Townsville has voted for Adani to try and level the playing field. Say you’re appointed by the Premier to unite our two cities. How would you do it? I’d charter a helicopter and stimulate each town’s economy with my $180 a day meal allowance. Make a 5-minute speaking appearance, talk about how good I am and kiss some babies. Who’d win a roast battle between Cairns Mayor Bob Manning and Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill? If Bob Manning had spectacularly lousy luck on the day of the debate and didn’t mop the floor with Jenny Hill, he’d still be the winner. Because he lives in Cairns.

Were you born in Cairns? I’m as much ‘from Cairns’ as Johnathon Thurston is ‘from Townsville’. What’s the most ‘Townsville thing’ you’ve seen or experienced visiting there? I bought a souvenir from Townsville once. It was a snow globe, but with dust inside. What’s the most appropriate name for Townsville newborns? I’m not sure what the most common name for newborns is in Townsville. Maybe check with the ABS? But I do think it’s ‘appropriate’ to allow Townsville parents to choose their own names for their newborns. What has Cairns got that Townsville doesn’t? A thriving comedy scene with talented, funny comedians. Townsville invite us here for all their big gigs to compensate. Say you’re appointed by the Premier to unite our two cities. How would you do it? Create the Townsville Exit Strategy – subsidised relocation to Cairns. We all know the rivalry only really exists because of jealousy. Who’d win a roast battle between Cairns Mayor Bob Manning and Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill? Cairns will actually win, but the records will show that Townsville won.

1. My favourite destination? Is easily hands down Melbourne. I love everything that the city has to offer… the cold weather, the shopping and the incredible food and culture. 2. A drink I love? I’m an absolute sucker for a barista made coffee and I’ll never turn down a glass of nice wine either. 3. Favourite fashion designer? I don’t exactly have a favourite fashion designer, but I love every shade of black. 4. Shoes I’d love to own or admire? Are my best friend Sarah’s. She has a truly eclectic and fabulous collection. 5. Most treasured possession? A silver pair of drop earrings gifted to me by someone close. They are unique yet simple and classy.
