I’ve refurbished things and helped my dad renovate a house, which I loved and plan on doing a lot more of in the future. Anything else you’d like to add: I’d like to thank the whole DUO team for this opportunity and to everyone who voted for me. WELCOME

AND THE WINNER IS... TOWNSVILLE! Stacey, Joan and I went to Sydney for the Publishers Australia Excellence Awards the other week where DUO was a finalist for the Regional Publication of the Year. We didn’t win the gong but we’re mighty proud that DUO was recognised as one of the top five regional magazines in Australia. Congratulations go to the winners, Barossa Living who make a fantastic publication. This year was the first time we’d entered and we were thrilled to be part of a very professional group. Be assured we’ll be up for it next year with a bigger, brighter and better DUO Magazine! How many people are there in this month’s issue? I’m going to sit down and count them all because I think it could be a record. One of the reasons why we make DUO is to be a benefit to the community. But that’s nothing compared to the work of the volunteers we’ve featured this month. We sent out a call to as many volunteer groups as we could think of and the response was overwhelming. DUO photographer, Sandra Heier Evensen shot 23 amazing portraits and I hope we did them justice over 10 pages. And it doesn’t stop there. In the spirit of Christmas, this month is our Goodwill & Giving Issue so we also feature some of our neighbours from overseas who share what Christmas means to them. This is the Christmas issue the girls in the office (the real power behind the throne) have been after for a few years now. From the stunning Christmas cover (featuring Katie Sellars) to the Christmas themed section covers and finally Les Searston’s Christmas Lights in our Last Word story, it’s all about sharing and caring at this time of the year. What a year it was and here’s to an even better 2015. From all of us here at DUO Magazine, we wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy Christmas. SCOTT MORRISON | PUBLISHER

R BE EM V NO 22

December

ER MB E EC 1D –2

As one year spins into another, the planets encourage a quick review – particularly concerning finances. Clearing the bills is an obvious move, but one that should start next year. It’d be daft not to enjoy the seasonal fun. But still try to grab some quiet moments for that personal recap. Clear head and heart in preparation for a better, bolder 2015.

Aquarius

Pisces

Aries

22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY

20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY

19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH

21 MARCH – 20 APRIL

December is a gift in itself, and you deserve it. Look forward to a shower of love and pleasures. Festivities always encourage extravagance – but there’s no harm in stretching the bank balance. What’s the silly season for, if not to have fun? Those with time should make the best of a red-hot sexual magnetism that matches their present energies.

Use December’s down time for a quick review. Recently, you’ve allowed others to influence or undermine your confidence, but the cosmos encourages you to re-establish your autonomy in the new year. Meanwhile, enjoy the festive season. And don’t worry about money. The planets stop siphoning your wallet and do their pilfering elsewhere.

December sees Pisceans charging ahead, with little regard for formalities. Some will find your enthusiasm exasperating. Others will be delighted by this uncustomary passion. Still, when this determined – it’s difficult giving up a dream or two. But there’s no rush, Pisces. Just work on one project at a time – and don’t forget to enjoy the seasonal festivities!

Self-control and December run at odds with each other. For now, any sense of discipline disappears under a pile of gift-wrapped parcels. But you should also steal some quiet time for yourself. Sexually, Saturn sends adoring thoughts around your love sector – and what better time for an unscheduled fling? Keep those Christmas stockings handy.

Taurus

Gemini

Cancer

Leo

21 APRIL – 20 MAY

21 MAY – 21 JUNE

22 JUNE – 22 JULY

23 JULY – 22 AUGUST

We all weave our own tangled webs. This month, it’s your turn to unpick some of those messy threads. Should an old flame suddenly reignite, keep a bucket of cold water handy or it may blaze out of control. The urge to overspend could also override common sense. Perhaps we can blame all this on the silly season?

Jupiter powers up Gemini energy levels all month long. Get as much as possible done in the first few weeks as the rest of December highlights new love, intimacy and travel. But if it’s a fresh start you’re after, make your feelings clear – there’s no better time to sweep away emotional debris. For the most part, though, it’s a month to revel in life’s delights.

Your career catches fire at year’s end, as you’ve impressed all the right people. Cancerians have been hoping for something extraordinary to happen and finally, the cosmos creates a buzz around work and money. Unexpected turns of events in relationships won’t faze you either, as most of them will be to your advantage. Enjoy.

Virgo

Libra

Scorpio

With most enjoying the silly season, there could be a noticeable lack of Leos in the conga line. Instead, you’re determined to claim a triumphant year’s end. Finish your tasks, but still give festivities a look-in. Your reward? Sentimental ties may be renewed. Singles are happily surprised, while couples opt for a change in scenery. A fab end to a busy year.

23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER

23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER

23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER

The secret to a happy December lies in tackling necessary duties early on. So clear the decks and then relax. Here’s your chance to let everyone know how much they mean to you. Month’s end brings a time for raiding new year sales and pampering. So right now, you need only exert yourself in the pursuit of pleasure.

You’re blessed with a fabulous festive season. Work duties don’t disappear, but now they’re mixed with plenty of time to mingle. Many zodiac neighbours may still struggle with money and, mostly, you’re spared this. Quite rightly, too. You’ve been through enough financial hardship this year. It’s time to pamper, and play.

Welcome to the best month of a thought-provoking year. Others might ease off, but you’re still happy to embrace extra work. It’s a great strategy, with rivals so distracted – you can achieve exactly what you want. But it’s not all work. After the 17th, join in the fun. Should extravagance break your bank balance, it’s all fixable in the new year.

NEIL CONNELL The Mission to Seafarers: Port of Townsville How long have you been volunteering? I’ve been volunteering at the Mission to Seafarers for about 10 years altogether. Why do you volunteer?I was at sea for a total of 20 years as a marine engineer. I had a continuing interest in shipping and decided the Mission to Seafarers was where I could help because I had experienced the invaluable services they provide for seamen worldwide. What do you enjoy most about volunteering? The continuing contact with seafarers of all nations. The Mission still fulfils the needs of seamen, who these days have very little time in port. Having the Flying Angel Club inside the Port makes it possible for them to visit. I get to meet crew every week I’m on duty. CONNECT NOW www.mts.org.au

MAUREEN GILBERT Townsville Multicultural Support Group How long have you been volunteering? Almost four years. After giving up work towards the end of 2010 I had a couple of months break before beginning to look around for volunteering opportunities. I was already familiar with the fantastic work the Townsville Multicultural Support Group (TMSG) does in providing support to refugee families so I attended a volunteer information session to learn more about the volunteer roles within their organisation. Currently I volunteer at TMSG and two other organisations. Why do you volunteer? I volunteer because not only does it give me the opportunity to meet and make friends with a variety of people from various backgrounds and cultures but volunteering also provides me with the opportunity to help and educate others. What do you enjoy most about volunteering? At TMSG it’s very rewarding to help new arrivals improve their English in a relaxed, non-threatening environment and develop a sense of belonging. I assist with weekly sewing classes, which is a wonderful opportunity for the new arrivals to not only learn to sew but also provides an opportunity for us to learn about their lives prior to coming to Australia and help them to understand some of the customs and cultures new to them. I feel privileged to be able to contribute to civic life in an increasingly global world. CONNECT NOW www.tmsg.org.au

SANDRA GLAISTER Delta Therapy Dogs; Mary Mackillop Parish Council; various board positions How long have you been volunteering? With the Delta Dogs, since 2000 when I set out to bring Delta Dogs to Townsville, and after two hard years of seeking funding and establishing a group of like-minded people with dogs that were suitable for this program, we did it. Since then the group has grown from strength to strength and we’ve now added the Classroom Canine program to our services. I’m now studying the benefits of therapy dogs and the effects of therapy on the dogs themselves. I also volunteer on community service boards. Why do you volunteer? I think I’m very lucky to have the life and experiences that I’ve had. I would never have achieved what I have achieved without the support of those around me. It’s only right then that I give something back to the community I love. The Delta Therapy Dogs are something close to my heart. I gain so much from having my animals around me and research has proved the powerful benefits of pet ownership. Why not then share this with others – especially those who are separated from their own pets for whatever reason. What do you enjoy most about volunteering? Volunteering for me is about connecting with the community. It’s a great way to meet people and help others who may need a bit of support – who knows, one day it could be me who requires the services of a volunteer. CONNECT NOW www.deltasociety.com.au

ROSEMARY GLASTONBURY Food Relief NQ How long have you been volunteering? For the past 35 years in various capacities and I’ve been part-time at Food Relief NQ (formerly Foodbank) since it opened in 2002. Why do you volunteer? I volunteer because I feel it’s good to give back to the community in some way. I particularly like Food Relief NQ because I don’t like to see resources or food going to waste. Also, if we can help people and families with putting food on the table then they may be able to spend more money on other necessities. What do you enjoy most about volunteering? My favourite part of working at Food Relief NQ is mixing with the other volunteers there and getting an insight into some of the wonderful charity groups in Townsville. My role is very small – there are some volunteers I work with who put in many more hours – and of course I can’t forget to mention Brad Webb and the major sponsors who contribute enormously. I’ve been a volunteer member at headspace, which is Australia’s National Youth Mental Health Foundation for youths aged 12 to 25, for around eight months now. Why do you volunteer? I study psychology and thought this would be a great opportunity to get more involved with mental health and the local community. I’ve been a fan of the work that headspace does for a long time so I was really excited to be able to volunteer and give back to such a wonderful organisation. What do you enjoy about volunteering? DAWN RICHARDS Ronald McDonald House North Queensland How long have you been volunteering? Since the house opened in October 2004. Why do you volunteer? My four-year-old grandson had leukaemia in 2003 and stayed at Ronald McDonald House in Sydney for six months. The house manager there told me a house was being built in Townsville and suggested I become a volunteer. My grandson is now a normal teenager and I’m still a volunteer. What do you enjoy most about volunteering? Ronald McDonald House North Queensland provides support to families of seriously ill children from across North Queensland. Over the last 10 years they’ve helped over 2300 families through one of the most difficult periods of their lives. As a volunteer, it’s extremely rewarding knowing that I’m helping a family in need through my actions. One of my volunteering duties is care-taking and, on the night I care-take, we hold a popcorn and movie night. It gives the families time to relax for a little while. DR RYL HARRISON Townsville Women’s Centre How long have you been volunteering? I’ve always volunteered in different capacities, but have particularly focussed on meeting the needs of women in Townsville over the past decade and have been on the Management Committee of the Women’s Centre for over five years. This year I am serving as President. Why do you volunteer? My day job is working at James Cook University. JCU’s world-class research and teaching is matched by its commitment to engaging with the local community to make a difference, so my voluntary work is an important part of both my professional and personal identity. Being part of the Management Committee also enables me to bring my research and policy skills to the table. What do you enjoy most about volunteering? The Women’s Centre brings together an amazing range of incredible, passionate and feisty women in all sorts of ways. Women come to the Centre just to meet with other women or to access help with finding and keeping secure accommodation, escape violence, manage health issues or deal with rape and sexual assault. The women who work at the Centre are phenomenally experienced in meeting sometimes complex needs in culturally appropriate ways. What I enjoy most is the opportunity to connect with others who are committed to creative change. CONNECT NOW www.thewomenscentre.org.au/support-us

ELISABETH MINEO Cootharinga North Queensland How long have you been volunteering? For over five years now. I gained a part-time role with Cootharinga as a support worker to supplement by tertiary education. Throughout that time, I volunteered for every fundraising event, raffle ticket selling project and every other volunteering opportunity offered to me. I’m now a registered physiotherapist with SportsMed NQ Physio and, for the past year, although I don’t work for Cootharinga any more, I’ve kept in touch by continuing to volunteer. Why do you volunteer? It’s like the starfish poem – When there were hundreds of starfish on the beach and the girl was throwing each one back into the sea. A man walked up and asked what she was doing and she said ‘Throwing them back into the sea so they don’t die’. He told her there were too many and she couldn’t possibly make a difference. So she politely bent down and threw another starfish into the sea and looked at him and said ‘It made a difference for that one!’. What do you enjoy most about volunteering? I enjoy Cootharinga’s fundraising events and love that people with disabilities are also included. It’s so rewarding being part of breaking down barriers and promoting acceptance and inclusion for people with disabilities. CONNECT NOW www.cootharinga.org.au

PIM CROTHERS Townsville Hospital Foundation Volunteer How long have you been Volunteering? I began volunteering in July this year. I’m studying Psychology at JCU and felt that volunteering my time with the Townsville Hospital Foundation would be a perfect fit. I volunteer once a week in the Children’s Ward and also volunteer at some of the Foundation’s fundraising events. Why do you Volunteer? I was always told that it is important to give back and I believe that the hospital is a good place to support people who need it. I enjoy giving back and seeing the smiles on the kids faces and I think it’s just a great way to spend my spare time. What do you enjoy most about Volunteering? The best part of volunteering is that I get to make someone’s day better. I also really enjoy talking to the other volunteers, because they are all remarkable people who enjoy what they are doing. MARY & DREW JACKSON St Andrews Meals on Wheels Townsville How long have you been volunteering? For about 16 years (not all in Townsville). Why do you volunteer? I’m a volunteer for this organisation because I believe it meets a very important need in the community and without volunteers it may not operate as effectively. I believe everyone should give something to their community at some stage of their lives, no matter how big or small that effort may be. Every little bit helps someone and keeps your community strong. What do you enjoy most about volunteering? I’m no social butterfly, so I enjoy this level of interaction with the staff, fellow volunteers and, most importantly, the recipients. Hopefully I’m adding to somebody else’s quality of life and I know I’m certainly adding to mine through the small part I play at St Andrew’s Meals on Wheels. CONNECT NOW www.mealsonwheels.com.au

SHAYE AUSTIN CanTeen How long have you been volunteering? I’ve volunteered with a few organisations over the years and started getting involved with CanTeen in February 2014. I’m studying my Bachelor of Nursing Science and have an interest in working with children who need support in varying capacities and CanTeen are an incredibly supportive organisation for youth. Why do you volunteer? I find volunteering provides fulfilment for me in that I can play a part in making a difference in someone’s day or being a role model in the community. As well as that, I find that the youth I’ve worked with actually teach me so much about perspectives in life and remind me of the importance of gratitude and happiness. What do you enjoy most about volunteering? It’s an extremely selfless and rewarding way to become involved in a community, especially if you’re new to a city (like I was). More importantly, I love that even small gestures, a few hours of my day, organising fun activities or even a welcoming smile can be appreciated so much by those in need of support. I started volunteering when I started my first job at 15 by sponsoring a child. After school I moved to China and volunteered there for three years. Why do you volunteer? I strongly believe that children and education are they key to our future. Volunteering with Act For Kids to help children recognise when they feel safe or unsafe and to identify safe adults through fun and interactive learning activities makes me feel as though I’m contributing to the empowerment of kids by ensuring they feel as though they have a voice and can be heard. What do you enjoy most about volunteering? Children are very resilient and creative creatures. I enjoy listening to their stories and looking at their drawings. Some of the funniest things I hear are often from children, as they have a unique way of seeing the world. CONNECT NOW www.actforkids.com.au

BAI TAPAU Kith and Kin How long have you been volunteering? I’ve been volunteering with the Kith and Kin Artworks! for more than three years. Why do you volunteer? I first joined because I wanted something to do. I wanted to get to know other people with disabilities. I wanted to encourage other people with disabilities to never give up on something they want to do to reach their goals in life. What do you enjoy most about volunteering? I like working with, helping and getting to know different people. I also enjoy doing sea creature paintings that represent my Torres Strait heritage. Since attending the Kith and Kin Artworks! program I’ve also learnt many new skills with different art techniques I hadn’t learnt before. There are so many different projects we do throughout the year, including dance, costume making, hat making, printmaking, entering competitions and exhibitions. When something comes up we all get into having a go, even if we’ve never done it before. CONNECT NOW www.kithandkin.com.au

TRUDY LIGHTFOOT Access Street Van Townsville How long have you been volunteering? Seven years in February 2015. Why do you volunteer? I saw the need for a van that goes to homeless and needy people, not only to give them sandwiches, soup, fruit and beverages, but more importantly let them know they count and that we accept them just as they are. We don’t judge or ask why they’ve found themselves in this position. We know that there are many reasons – mental/ physical health, alcoholism, drugs, or just not coping with whatever has happened in their life. We also give out produce parcels to about 32 families per week who are doing it tough. What do you enjoy most about volunteering? The people! Regardless of their condition we always show them respect, in turn they all show us respect. We stop at boarding houses, flats, emergency accommodation and the parks. All the volunteers know that whatever job they are doing it’s very important to help the people. No-one receives any remuneration. TONY AND ANNETTE HOPPER Guide Dogs Queensland (Townsville) How long have you been volunteering? Tony has been a client of Guides Dogs since 2000 and volunteering since 2002 and I’ve been volunteering since 2001. Why do you volunteer? We volunteer as a way of saying thankyou to Guides Dogs for the help, encouragement and support they showed Tony and myself when Tony’s sight became damaged. We hope that by volunteering we can help someone else find the assistance and support they may need during their journey in the vision-impaired world. What do you enjoy most about volunteering? Being involved in the community in a proactive way and meeting wonderful guide dogs and their handlers. We’ve made some long-term friends and like the feeling that, in some small way, we’ve been able to return the support that was shown to us. KAREN INCH Townsville Hospital Foundation Volunteer How long have you been volunteering? In 1984 a friend of mine, Lorraine Arnold (who was a radiographer at the old Townsville Hospital) noticed the anguish that many patients attending the Oncology Department suffered. In order to allay the stress of these visits she asked me if I could give some time to attend the patient area to serve tea and biscuits and converse with patients. Other ladies joined us and we set up a daily roster. Why do you volunteer? I enjoy helping people. When my children became independent and my husband ran his successful business I found myself with time on my hands. When the opportunity to serve as a volunteer came along I entered a new phase in my life. It got me out of the house and I felt that I was now giving something to the community. What do you enjoy most about volunteering? When people come to a hospital they’re worried and apprehensive. Some are confused as to who they should see or what is going to happen to them. As a volunteer we can greet them courteously, direct them to the right department and talk to them to alleviate their fears. We can also help free up the time of nurses who can use their professional skills elsewhere. CONNECT NOW www.everydayhero.com.au/event/thfdonate

CARMEN LOVELL Townsville State Emergency Service (SES) How long have you been volunteering? I’ve been an SES Volunteer since I joined in March this year. I decided that, this year, I really wanted to do some volunteering work. I chose the SES as they are a fantastic organisation that really helps the community when in need. Why do you volunteer? Giving back to the community is something I value. Having lived in Queensland for most of my life, I’ve seen and witnessed the devastation that comes from natural disasters. Watching all the destruction and devastation unfold before my very eyes really made me realise I want to go out and help the community. There are so many people who need help and someone to talk to and I wanted to be part of that. What do you enjoy most about volunteering? Being surrounded by people from different walks of life who all want to be there. Everyone who turns up to training each week wants to continue their training to further enhance their skills and knowledge. Teamwork is a very large part of being in the SES and the ‘older’ volunteers are more than happy to pass on any operational skills and experiences to us ‘newbies’. MALCOLM TATTERSALL North Queensland Conservation Council How long have you been volunteering? I started volunteering for the North Queensland Conservation Council in March this year after nearly five years in a similar role at Reef HQ Aquarium. Why do you volunteer? I see climate change as the critical social justice issue of our time. If we can’t move quickly towards a truly sustainable society, millions of people (mostly in the third world, mostly already poor) will soon be suffering food shortages and extreme weather events and those problems will spread far more widely in our children’s time. Anything I can do to nudge the world away from that is time well spent. What do you enjoy most about volunteering? Doing something worthwhile is very satisfying in itself and I enjoy working with people who share my values, too. CONNECT NOW www.givenow.com.au/northqueenslandconservationcouncil

I heard about Soldier On while presenting at a seminar and I valued their mission in helping wounded soldiers, airmen/women, sailors, and their families beyond the battlefield. Why do you volunteer? I believe I have learnt a lot from my experiences of being mentally and physically wounded and I wish to help other wounded soldiers, airmen and women, sailors, and their families to achieve what is possible – to live a quality lifestyle despite their wounds. What do you enjoy most about volunteering? Being able to assist the wounded and their families anonymously; knowing it has the potential to build relationships, empower the wounded to interact with their community, and improve the public’s perception of the mental and physical sacrifice defence members make. STUCK FOR CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS? SANTA CLAUS LET’S US IN ON SOME OF THE MOST POPULAR REQUESTS FOR GIFTS THIS YEAR. I’m sure you have received countless letters already, what are the most popular requests from little girls and boys this year? “The little girls who have visited me for photos or written me a letter are asking for Barbies, my little ponys, Smiggle stationery, pretty dresses and, of course, anything from the Disney movie Frozen.” “For the boys it’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, Lego, scooters or bikes, and one young boy was telling me all about the magic kits in Myer.”

Do you have any suggestions for presents for mums and dads?

SANTA CLAUS OFFERS ADVICE FOR GIFTS

“Of course, we can never forget about all the wonderful mummies and daddies out there. Mums like to be pampered, so skin care products, perfume, tea sets and massage vouchers are always a hit. Dad’s, on the other hand, love anything techno, so skip the socks this year and get him a new gadget or a Nespresso machine. Myer and Dick Smith at Stockland have a great range. Or for the family it’s magic bullet blending kits or soda stream machines.”

I’m sure there are still plenty of boys and girls yet to see you and tell you what they want for Christmas, where can they find you? “I’m at Stockland Townsville every day until Christmas Eve, right near Fratello Coffee. And I’m even giving out gifts before Christmas Day – I’m giving every child who has a photo taken with me a free plush elf. And there is also a Santa Mailbox, so you can write to me and if you include a reply address I promise to write back.” “My good friends at Stockland are making Christmas easy! They have everything on your Christmas list, and they also offer free gift-wrapping. Now that’s the Christmas spirit.”

BENJAMIN KINGSBERRY | MANAGING DIRECTOR | HARCOURTS KINGSBERRY TOWNSVILLE

NEW YEAR, NEW OPPORTUNITIES With 2015 right around the corner, it’s a great time to think about more than just new year resolutions. With increased activity in the Townsville property market during summer months, it’s also the perfect time to achieve premium sale prices.

It does not take a ‘property expert’ to notice that in recent times, there has been significant reduction in market activity, along with a slight reduction in achievable sale prices. With this in mind, innovative real estate practices coupled with an intimate understanding of buyer behaviour has never been more important in order to achieve the best possible result. The local property market is somewhat erratic, but like all markets there is still some level of predictability where certain market trends will be consistent, regardless of the factors that are influencing the market at any given time. As the year moves towards the final stages of 2014 and the door is opened to the New Year, there is one trend that will have particular importance for those wishing to sell – the Townsville market does see a significant increase in buyer activity during the summer months. The summer months provide sellers with the opportunity to secure the highest possible sale price, in the shortest possible time frame.

The summer months provide sellers with the opportunity to secure the highest possible sale price, in the shortest possible time frame.

What’s the best way to take advantage of peak selling periods? Property owners need to position themselves to ensure they have the opportunity to take advantage of peak selling periods, and achieve that all important sale during these times of increased activity. Preparation is the key to success.

factors as having the property appear on the first page of www.realestate.com.au and that the advertising presentation stands out to new buyers entering the market.

Consider your options. Like anything, Real Estate is an industry where the approach and skill set of each and every agent is varied. It is an industry where consumers will experience the good, the bad, and the ugly. It is essential to identify an agent who aligns with your personality, but more importantly they need to back up this personal connection with a high level of capability and professionalism.

Is my property easy to find for buyers that have just entered the marketplace? If I was buying a property, and I found my own, what would my impression be of the property based on available advertising? A basic search will easily show how your property compares with others and if your impression of it is not good, it is essential to ‘give the property a fresh set of legs in the market’ – this will likely involve either a change in your marketing strategy, or a possible change of agent (or, at times, both).

Enter the market with a strategy for success. In todays market, with supply levels high and competition for buyers fierce, it’s essential that properties enter the marketplace well prepared and with a strategic, collaboratively designed program to position the property above the competition.

For those property owners who enter the beginning of 2015 with a fresh, strategic approach to positioning their home on the property market the chances of successfully achieving a result could not be better! For further enquiries, call 47 722 022 or email ben.kingsberry@harcourts.com.au

If your property is already on the market ensuring it is easily visible to active buyers is essential. It is important to consider such

EXPANDING YOUR HORIZON

BEC AND NATHAN SWINDELL ARE BUSY PROFESSIONALS – BEC AS THE FRANCHISEE OF JOYCE MAYNE AND NATHAN, A MEMBER OF THE AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCES.

THE COUPLE moved to Townsville 12 months ago for their careers and quickly set about searching for the neighbourhood where they wanted to build their dream home.

“Also, Stockland continues to invest in large community infrastructure projects like schools, shops and recreation which will continue to make the community highly desirable.

Fast-forward to today and Mr and Mrs Swindell couldn’t be happier. The couple is close to moving into their own private piece of paradise – a modern Balinese-inspired pavilion-style home. The luxury home features four-bedrooms, a resort-style pool, huge outdoor deck with barbeque kitchen and home-theatre all set on a tropically landscaped 937sqm block in one of Townsville’s most prestigious estates.

“Our home is a lifestyle design great for entertaining and we believe that Stockland’s on-going investment means it will always be sought after for families looking for an idyllic lifestyle that has everything close by.

The Swindell’s chose to build their luxurious home at North Queensland’s fastest growing community, North Shore.

North Shore Project Director, Andrew Astorquia, said Stockland launched Horizon with the aim of raising the bar on architectural merit, innovation and design for high-end homes.

Stockland launched their newest and most exclusive land offering to the market last year with a vision of creating the highest quality housing and most enviable village in North Queensland. And since then, the 110-lot Horizon release has attracted a lot of interest with high-end buyers looking for the ultimate lifestyle and a smart investment. Mrs Swindell said they purchased their 937sqm land for $235,000 and spent an additional $550,000 plus on the build.

“Not only is it a great place to live – we think it is a fantastic longterm investment and we can’t wait to move in.”

“Our brief for Horizon was to create designs that were comparable to the best homes in the country with an emphasis on innovation and sustainability. “Horizon is about creating a village that boasts grand homes with sprawling floor-plans that take advantage of outdoor living and feature eye-catching façades.

“When we arrived in Townsville we searched long and hard for where we wanted to live,” Mrs Swindell said.

“The homes at Horizon are ultra-modern with high-vaulted ceilings, stone and timber features, luxury inclusions and bathrooms designed around resort-style pools and gardens.

“North Shore were just releasing Horizon and it had everything we were looking for. It is filled with modern, cutting-edge houses on huge blocks surrounded by million dollar parks and architecturally designed streetscapes.

“They are the total package with seamless integration from the landscaped streetscapes to the parks and into the built design – Horizon is really delivering a showcase of best-practice luxury urban design.” Horizon is North Shore’s most exclusive address offering large lot sizes, exclusive homes and grand lifestyles. COCURATA / ART CURATES FASHION

Creative director and ksubi co-founder, George Gorrow and New York based curator, George Benias have combined forces and are set to challenge the traditional gallery paradigm with their new venture, Cocurata. Gorrow and Benias envisage a direct exchange between artist and artisan – a street artist working with a jeweller, a sculptor collaborating with a perfumer or a painter creating bespoke, ready to wear pieces – to create pieces that can stand alone in a gallery and boutique. Cocurata will launch its inaugural Spring/Summer collection, EXTRACTION, in February, 2015, featuring pieces from Bäst, Paul Insect and Rostarr. www.cocurata.com

CAMPARI CELEBRATES 16 YEARS OF THE ICONIC CAMPARI CALENDAR

THEWORLD’S FIRST UNLOSEABLE SUNGLASSES Tzukuri is aiming to prevent the tragedy of losing your sunglasses with a range of sunglasses that allow you to track them should they go missing. The Tzukuri sunglasses have an inbuilt Bluetooth Low Energy module that works with a smartphone app to tell you how far they are away. Cleverly, solar cells on the glasses are used to keep the wireless module charged. The company was accepting deposits to reserve a pair (which has now closed) in order to fund the production run next year. If that eventuates, the retail price is expected to be around the US$350 mark.

TIFFANY’S DELUXE SOY CANDLE.

Peter Alexander and MOR join together to present a limited edition Breakfast at Tiffany’s deluxe soy candle. Inspired by the elegance of old Hollywood glamour, the packaging features silhouettes of style icon, Audrey Hepburn against pink facades. Housed inside is the classic MOR Marshmallow Deluxe Soy Candle – a luxurious, high gloss Hobnail vessel featuring a lid that can be used as a snuffer too, and completed with a pastel pink tassel. “We couldn’t have found a more perfect candle to share the luxury of our latest Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Peter Alexander pyjama range. Presented in a limited edition box, the vanilla musk and jasmine flower candle comes in a stunning reusable glass vessel.” says Peter. Available now at Peter Alexander stores.

The journey of the famous Campari Calendar began in the year 2000. Each Calendar is unique in its own way and every year the creative theme, the choice of the star and the artistic treatment of the images by the photographer, collectively bring to life the essence of the brand – passionate, charismatic, intriguing and above all extremely contemporary. This year’s iconic Calendar, entitled ‘Mythology Mixology’, is dedicated to celebrating Campari’s unique and colourful history and the intrinsic stories linked to twelve of its best-loved classic cocktails. The star of this year’s Calendar is the Hollywood actress Eva Green shot in a series of stunning outfits created by leading designers including Vivienne Westwood, Versace, Alaïa and Christian Louboutin to name just a few, was shot by the esteemed fine art photographer, Julia Fullerton-Batten.

ICONIC AUSTRALIAN LABEL CAMILLA AND MARC recently

launched their inaugural footwear collection to compliment the design house’s ready-to-wear collection. Focusing on a subdued colour palette of predominantly black, elegant heels come in a variety of styles – from sling back mules, strappy sandals, a cutaway pump, and a gladiator strappy heel with a customised CAMILLA AND MARC exposed gold zipper. The comfort and quality of these designs is synonymous with the craftsmanship and detail of the CAMILLA AND MARC brand. Available in boutiques and online www.camillaandmarc.com

TRACEY WILLIAMS I’m a fun-loving person, who enjoys her family and friends and the fun times I get to spend with them. I enjoy running and exercise of any kind. I completed an 8 week challenge and loved it so much that I’m now into my 20th week... oops. I’m always up for anything, hence my trip to the Sunshine Coast to compete in my first of many Tough Mudder races. I went with an amazing group of people who urged me to complete 20kms of tough and muddy obstacles and the most fun three hours of physical pain ever.

MY BAG is a little purchase I acquired in the Brisbane Queen Street Mall on a girls’ weekend away with my best friend Rachelle Foley. The weather was dismal but we had the best time walking South Bank Markets in the rain. I never usually find bargains but I couldn’t resist this beauty.

LORNA JANE BOOK AND SUN VISOR

I’ve had to ban myself from even stepping foot into Lorna Jane. It got so bad that the girls knew me by name. When I told them I was ‘banned’ for a year and would then walk in with a friend, they’d ask me “What are you doing here?”. Yeah, the ban didn’t last.

FITBIT It tells me how many steps I’ve taken and how far I’ve run today.

MAKE UP POUCH This was my mother’s so she is a little old and worn, but I love it, more sentimental than anything really.

SUNGLASSES Love my Marc Jacobs sunglasses, I got them on a trip to Sydney with my husband for the NRL Grand Final.

PENDANT I love it but it’s not actually mine. I borrowed it from a girlfriend and haven’t given it back yet. It’s ok. She knows where I live and can get it anytime “Hey Kylie”. BIRTHDAY EARRINGS Only

friend for being part of her special day.

guessing but we attended my in-laws’ 50th wedding anniversary and my fatherin-law had given his wife the most beautiful earrings so I was teasing Steve that he was outdone by his dad. Imagine my surprise when a couple of weeks later I was given this lovely gift so I hold them dear to me.

BAG HOLDER A lovely gift from a

Mother’s Day presents from my girls when apparently all I really needed was a coffee mug.

PHOTO I absolutely love this photo of

my girls and I. It was taken by a friend on a fun girl’s afternoon out with lots of friends and lots of laughs.

iPHONE Can’t go anywhere without

my iPhone… doesn’t everybody.

AUDREY HEPBURN WALLET This is

my most treasured find. I went to Thailand with some girlfriends for an eight day fun getaway. Four of them were struck down with a virus but I still went shopping and was lucky to spot this beauty.

54 DUO MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2014 duomagazine.com.au

On girls’ nights out, one friend would use a Glad Snap Lock Bag for her money, ID and cards and we’d tell her to put it away! So when I was in Thailand I bought these coin purses.

GUESS WATCH Last minute buy in Bangkok to spend the rest of my Thai money.

KATY PERRY PERFUME All I wanted for Christmas was perfume so my girls tried to call one of my girlfriends to see which Katy Perry perfume I liked. When they couldn’t get hold of her, they guessed instead. Turned out it was actually Beyonce’s that I liked.

MARIANNE MILANI Tell us a little about yourself? I am a high school teacher at St. Anthony’s Catholic College, Townsville and am very fortunate to work with a creative, inspiring and caring staff and student community. I am very active and love exploring and travelling to new places and experiencing different cultures. I am an easygoing, relaxed, happy and fun-loving person who is always ready for a good laugh and a catch up over coffee. In my own time I enjoy cooking, sewing, music, boating and of course spending quality time with friends, family and my handsome husband, Nathan.

Describe your style? Sharp tailoring, fun textiles and statement colours and prints. I don’t like to follow trends but instead enjoy finding something ‘a little different’ to wear but all the while dressing conservatively and appropriate for the occasion. Most treasured item? A set of gorgeous pearl earrings that Nathan bought me when we first started dating. Labels you like? Lorna Jane, Cue, Country Road and I like to look for inspiration from designers such as Alex Perry, Carolina Herrera and Peter Pilotto. Best shopping trip? I actually don’t enjoy shopping when I am away. Don’t get me wrong, I love finding unusual and unique pieces but when I travel I prefer to see the sights, explore the places and taste and experience the culture. Your style guru? Miroslava Duma, Olivia Palermo and Amal Alamuddin. You’d never be caught wearing…? A frown and a scrunchie and definitely not at the same time. Wardrobe item you should part with but can’t bring yourself to? A pair of high-waisted, skinny leg and bellbottom kermit green pants that I found in a vintage store and wore for a 80s themed party. Yes, they are as amazing as they sound…ha! Shoes or dress first? Usually it’s the dress before the shoes and accessories. Anything else you’d like to mention? I like to be a positive role model for my students and donate to the Vinnies Winter Appeal, the Salvation Army and other community initiatives that support the less fortunate. An abundance of clothing does not create happiness but the gift of giving and assisting others is a reward like no other and I would like to encourage and promote to readers the act of almsgiving the next time they are spring cleaning.

LAURELYN HIGGINS | HYGIENIST | SMILE DENTAL

BEAUTY AND THE DENTIST

Smile Dental’s Hygienist Laurelyn Higgins shares her thoughts on everything from wedding-white smiles to the latest use of Botox by dentists for TMJ disorders.

The Invisalign Diet Invisalign orthodontic treatment uses a series of clear, comfortable aligner trays to gently straighten teeth over time. The aligner trays are worn at least 22 hours a day but removed when eating, brushing and flossing. They discourage you from snacking as you have to take them out to eat then brush before replacing them. You also lose weight as you should only drink water when wearing them to avoid discolouring the trays. By the end of the Invisalign orthodontic treatment, you’ll a have a beautiful smile and be slimmer too! The Bluetooth-connected toothbrush Oral-B has launched the new Smart Series 7000 power toothbrush in Australia. It has 6 cleaning modes, a pressure indicator, a visual timer and an App which tracks your brushing. The App helps you to create better brushing routines to improve your oral health. Like a health-band that counts your steps, the feedback provides an incentive to motivate you to do better. And the reward is shiny, bright, healthy teeth. Replacing old fillings with new ones When you laugh, talk or yawn, you may show more than you think…your old amalgam fillings. If the fillings are defective or show decay, they should be replaced by your dentist. However the new cosmetic tooth-coloured fillings can give you a more youthful smile. EAT YOURSELF OUT OF A HANGOVER

CELEBRATIONS CAN BE TRICKY WHEN TRYING TO STICK TO ANY EATING REGIME, BUT AS A NUTRITIONIST I KNOW THAT NO ONE IS PERFECT AND SO A LITTLE CHEATING NOW AND THEN IS TO BE EXPECTED! WORDS CYNDI O’MEARA, NUTRITIONIST & FOUNDER OF CHANGING HABITS WWW.CHANGINGHABITS.COM.AU

The key is not undoing all the wonderful work you’ve done throughout the year by making poor food and alcohol choices. Not only do we get hangovers from too much alcohol, over-eating can leave us feeling sluggish and lethargic too. Even though you may have slept after eating, the sleep would have been very restless as your body was trying to digest all the different types of foods. The best thing for a food hangover is to consume a bunch of fresh fruit and vegetables with greens (herbs and leafy greens), in order to help in digestion and drag out as many of the toxins as possible. Throw into the blender spinach, parsley, cucumber and freshly squeezed orange juice – blend till smooth. Drinking ginger tea will also help. The hair of the dog does not work in this instance! The best cure for a hangover is to simply not drink too much but when you’ve overindulged on alcohol; chances are you’ll wake up feeling peaky. Typical symptoms include nausea, lack of motor skills, headache, sensitivity to light and diarrhoea

– all caused by changes in our body’s chemistry caused by alcohol. While everyone seems to have their own patented hangover cure, there are some wonderful foods to eat that will lessen your symptoms and get you back on your feet: 1. Water Number one rule for hangovers is to rehydrate. Try to drink alternate glasses of water during your drinking session, have a big glass before bed and continue to drink throughout the morning after. The dreaded hangover headache is caused by dehydration and simple steps will avoid this! If water isn’t doing it for you, try coconut water – it’s full of electrolytes and will restore your moisture levels. Never opt for fizzy, sugary drinks as they won’t help give you the hydration you need.

3. Eggs Eggs are not only rich in protein, which can settle upset stomachs, but they contain cysteine, which can actively fight alcohol-created toxins in your body. They’re hugely versatile too! 4. Ginger This is particularly good for nausea, try some ginger tea or add some fresh ginger to your stir fry or into a smoothie. 5. Tomatoes High in Vitamin C and glutathione, the substance our bodies produce to help counter-act hangover toxins, tomatoes can be a great helper for cleansing the body – try juices, whole or cooked, just not in Bloody Mary form.

2. Bananas This fruit is loaded with potassium and will be a much-needed electrolyte source for your dehydrated body. If you don’t fancy having it by itself, mix in a smoothie with some natural yoghurt as a refreshing drink.

TIME TO UPGRADE YOUR HEARING AID

Tailoring a hearing aid treatment plan has never been so individualised and flexible thanks to new upgradeable technology and feature menu choice. Traditionally hearing aids have fixed technology levels set at different price ranges, so as you pay more you receive more set features in the hearing aids. For example an economy range hearing aid may have basic features, such as manual controls to change between two settings (one for ‘quiet’ and another for ‘background noise’). Moving up to the mid-range level hearing aids, the features may be automatic, rather than manual, meaning they automatically switch to the background noise mode without pushing buttons. The mid-range devices may also come with Bluetooth and extra programs such as tinnitus treatment modes.

There are now hearing aid devices available where you choose what features you would like specifically and pay per feature.

But what if you are not interested in Bluetooth or an automatic device but did want the extra program for tinnitus treatment? In the past this meant paying for extra features that may not be used just to get the one extra feature you did want.

What’s more, you can set the devices up in trial mode to see if it’s for you or not before you purchase the upgrade. You can turn your economy range hearing aids into topof-the-range hearing aids (allowing access to binaural processing) at any time.

then can select to purchase just one feature, for example a tinnitus treatment program. There is one downside, unfortunately some of the high-end technology features can’t be purchased for the economy base devices as they may not have the features built into it. An example of this is what is called ‘binaural processing’ where the hearing aids actually talk to each other. This provides assistance in telling where sounds come from (localisation).

A great example of how upgrades can be used is for one of our patients who was unemployed. He had basic needs but was also on a tight budget. He purchased the economy range devices, which were wonderful. However, once he found work in the mines he suddenly found he was working around heavy machinery and was unable to use the manual controls on the hearing aids to switch off around machinery noise.

However, there is another hearing aid model that offers a similar flexible approach called ‘upgrading’ which overcomes these issues. This model has traditional set technology levels but there are five levels so this allows fairly specific feature addition between levels.

He simply upgraded his devices two levels to unlock the automatic machinery settings that automatically go into a mute earplug mode around heavy machinery. The cost of the upgrade was a fraction of the price of a new hearing aid.

What upgradable technology allows you to do is to upgrade or downgrade between any different technology levels. So you can start at an economy range with manual settings and two programs. Then, should you decide at a later date you’d like to use Bluetooth with your devices, you can simply upgrade the hearing aid to the next level of technology for minimal costs without having to purchase a new hearing aid.

There are now hearing aid devices available where you choose what features you would like specifically and pay per feature, rather than having the features chosen for you. This means the patient has the opportunity to purchase a base range hearing device and

“YOU MAY BE SURPRISED TO LEARN THAT SIMPLE FOOD SUBSTITUTION CAN HALVE THE CALORIES YOU CONSUME.” DR STEPHEN FAIRLEY IT MAY SHOCK YOU to learn that Queensland is the most obese state and Townsville and Mackay are among the fattest cities in Australia. “Unlike the national average of 66 per cent of people being obese or overweight we weigh in at 75 per cent of the Townsville population,” Dr Fairley says. “The motivation for my book (The Mystery of Sustained Weight Loss – And you thought it was impossible!) was my dismay at what’s happening with obesity in society and all the diseases that follow on from this.”

TAKING THE MYSTERY OUT OF WEIGHT LOSS

INSTEAD OF GOING THROUGH THE SAME STORY WITH PATIENT AFTER PATIENT, DR STEPHEN FAIRLEY HAS PUT ALL OF HIS KNOWLEDGE FROM 25 YEARS OF SPECIALIST PRACTISE IN THE AREA OF WEIGHT LOSS INTO A BOOK.

These include diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and many common cancers such as breast cancer, bowel cancer and pancreatic cancer. “We seem to regard many of these things as inevitable and related to ageing but that’s not the case,” Dr Fairley says. “They are avoidable in most people and you may well be able to stop many or all of your current medication if you follow the advice given, but you must involve your doctor in this process.” The book explains why we have a problem with obesity in our society and the medical consequences of obesity. There is a detailed explanation of what foods are made of and what you should and shouldn’t be eating and why. “Most of the public seem to have no idea how harmful many processed foods are to them and their children,” Dr Fairley says. “You may be surprised to learn that simple food substitution can halve the calories you consume. You don’t have to go hungry to lose weight. There are many natural products you can use as appetite suppressants or as bulking agents to fill you up.” Dr Fairley came to Townsville in 1991 from Melbourne, where he grew up and trained at Melbourne University and the Royal Melbourne and Austin Hospitals. “I was keen to work where there was more of a need for specialists than in a big city and looking forward to a more relaxed lifestyle,” he says. “The book is like a bit like a long medical consultation. I’m hoping it will make a difference out there, more so than I can achieve by seeing patients one at a time.”

You can buy The Mystery of Sustained Weight Loss – And you thought it was impossible! for $15 directly from Dr Fairley’s practice at 163 Kings Road in Pimlico, at the Townsville Day Surgery, many GP practices and Amazon online.

STAYING HEALTHY IN A FAST-PACED WORLD

Today’s Modern Woman: Clean house; healthy dinner on the table (at dinner time); fit, trim and well groomed; work full time; laundry done and put away; great sex life... Pick any two. As a working mum with a FIFO husband, this doesn’t begin to sum it up! And it doesn’t even mention juggling kids as well! So when we are already pressed for time, how can we make sure we still eat well and find time to exercise? The key is in working smarter, not harder, in all aspects of our lives. The number one essential is planning. I recommend planning meals for the week ahead and getting everything you need in ONE shop. Relying on daily shops is time consuming, expensive and makes it too tempting to eat out or get takeaway. A little preparation also goes a long way. Depending on your lifestyle, you may find it helpful to prepare some meals or ingredients in advance or to simply double the recipe when you cook and store leftovers in individual serves to make quick, easy meals that can be reheated when you’re stretched for time. It is important to move away from preparing separate meals for different family members according to preferences and tolerances. Instead, work on adapting your family’s favourite recipes to make them healthier by substituting certain ingredients. Get the whole family involved in meal planning and food preparation; many children will love

The key is in working smarter, not harder, in all aspects of our lives.

the opportunity to choose a family meal and assist in preparation, and having a team approach to household chores not only sets a great example for your children, it teaches them essential life skills. The second essential is to schedule your exercise and make it a priority. If you have limited time for exercise, split it up into two thirty-minute exercise sessions per day or try high intensity interval training (HIIT). Studies have shown that a thirty-minute HIIT session is three times more effective for fat loss than forty-five minutes of endurance training, meaning you can fit a super-efficient, fat-burning gym workout into your lunch break! Get the whole family involved and be creative with your time. Why not leave the car at home and ride or run to work, or do some exercise while the kids are doing their outside school activities? Pop the kids on a bike, a scooter or in a pram and hit the Strand for a walk or run. You’ll create great, healthy habits for your kids and spend valuable time together.

be some days where you just won’t be able to stay on top of everything. For these days I recommend having a supply of frozen mixed vegetables and fish fillets or a few healthy frozen meals. There are even some excellent local businesses that offer pick-up or home-delivered healthy meals that would be perfect for this purpose and others that offer childcare with house cleaning and food preparation included! A good personal trainer can design an exercise and nutrition program that is suitable to your current health status and fits in with your schedule and commitments and can advise you on even more strategies you can use to help make your life more manageable, ensuring you stay healthy and have the energy required to power on.

Lastly, always have a back-up plan and never be afraid to ask for help. We are not super heroes. When you live a busy life there will

FOLLOW YOUR GUT INSTINCT

The presence of ‘leaky gut’ and food sensitivities may be to blame for conditions many of us write-off as genetics.

How many of us are currently ‘managing’ chronic fatigue, skin issues, arthritis, mental disorders, hormonal imbalances, fertility problems or autoimmune conditions with the belief these afflictions are a result of family history, ageing or simply being genetically ‘unlucky’? Thanks to the advances of science and functional medicine, we now know that only approximately 5-10 per cent of all diseases are genetically predetermined. So what’s really going on? Research over the past two decades has revealed that gut health is critical to overall wellbeing, and that an unhealthy gut contributes to a wide range of diseases. Our intestinal lining is not only the site where food absorption occurs but also our interface with the outside world. It’s a hollow tube in which everything we consume is not really a part of us until it’s safely absorbed. So not only is it a lining for nutrient assimilation but it is one of our most important protective barriers. The integrity of this barrier is everything to our health and, when it becomes compromised, not only do we become open to foreign invaders but our very own source of nourishment, food, can become the enemy.

Research over the past two decades has revealed that gut health is critical to overall wellbeing.

This breach of barrier integrity is known as intestinal hyper permeability or ‘leaky gut’. Leaky gut and, with it, food sensitivities are one of the most common underlying causes to chronic low level inflammation, now known to be a precursor to most forms of disease. Many researchers now believe that supporting intestinal health and restoring the integrity of the gut barrier will be one of the most important goals of medicine in the 21st century. This is largely thanks to experts like Dr Alessio Fasano who have proven the existence of leaky gut and the evidence is mounting daily that this is a precondition to developing autoimmunity. Conventional researchers and doctors often scoffed at the idea that a leaky gut contributes to autoimmune problems (and sometimes still do), but many are now rethinking this. New research is showing that the intestinal barrier, in large part, determines whether we tolerate or react to toxic substances we ingest from the environment. The breach of the intestinal barrier (a ‘leaky gut’) by food toxins and chemicals causes an immune response that affects not only the gut itself, but also other organs including the skeletal system,

pancreas, kidney, liver and brain. And here’s the kicker people: you don’t have to have gut symptoms to have a leaky gut. Leaky gut can manifest as skin problems like eczema or psoriasis, heart failure, autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto’s or rheumatoid arthritis, as well as mental illness, autism spectrum disorder, depression and more. Determining the presence of leaky gut and food sensitivities used to be relegated to the task of performing a time-consuming and often frustrating food elimination diet. These diets were often of limited success at best, as reactive symptoms could occur anywhere in the body and sometimes too subtle to become aware of. Thankfully functional labs are making this form of laboratory testing widely available – taking the guesswork out of the process.

PHILIPPINES

Lyn and Leo Pabie Christmas is all about togetherness for Filipino couple Lyn and Leo Pabie. “Christmas in our culture is about love and sharing. Everyone embraces this day as it is the time that everyone comes together. In the Philippines it is almost a must that everyone comes, but here in Australia it is kind of hard to have everyone together as families are all spread out,” says Lyn. The Pabie’s have been living in Townsville for over 20 years, having migrated here straight from the Philippines. “All the family are here in Australia, the whole tribe,” Lyn laughs. “This year Christmas will be in Townsville. We have nieces coming up from Brisbane, family coming from Cairns and maybe even some relatives coming from the Philippines.” Lyn says there will be a spread of both traditional Filipino and Australian cuisine on the Christmas table. “There will be Filipino food such as chicken adobo (soy chicken), paksiw na lechon (pork dish), hamonado and menudo (meat and vegetables),” says Lyn. “There will always be rice on the table as without it, it’s not a meal.” As well as the traditional foods Lyn says the Christmas celebration will also feature a bain marie filled with more Western dishes such as lasagna, spaghetti bolognese and barbecue meat. “And prawns of course.” And while the Pabie’s Christmas will be just like it was at home in the Philippines, surrounded by family and good food, Lyn says it still isn’t quite the same. “I do miss the Filipino Christmas immensely but we just have to make our own Christmas here,” she says. “Christmas is so much more celebrated there – watching the Filipino channel and seeing them setting up Christmas lights and decorations in September does make you miss it a bit.”

IRAQ

Mazaher Hassan and Najat Abbas with grand-daughters Sammara Jalal and Rana Taher For Iraqi refugees Najat Abbas and her husband Mazaher Hassan, Christmas has always been about indulgence. “Before Christmas everyone is cooking and decorating the house,” Najat says. “The cooking preparations have already started.” After escaping the Saddam Hussein regime and its violence 11 years ago, the couple, who now call themselves Aussies, say Christmas is more about family now than it has ever been. “We have a big family now – we came to Australia as six people and now there are 16 grandchildren alone and there is another one on the way so we have a big celebration,” Najat says. “All of our kids (three boys, three girls) like coming to our house and we will do an Iraqi barbecue – it’s called kebab shish – it’s meat on a wooden stick and it’s very nice.” Najat said the family has recently included an Australian tradition into their celebrations. “The night before Christmas we go and look at lights and one of my boys dresses up as Santa. It helps us get into the Christmas spirit.”

Elizabeth Tusala says she will celebrate this Christmas in a similar way that she would in her home country of Congo. “In Congo on Christmas Day we go to church, pray, sing, celebrate, eat and drink,” says Elizabeth. “It’s a very colourful celebration with everybody around.” With only her twelve and a half year-old son by her side, Elizabeth may not be celebrating this Christmas surrounded by family, but she will instead be celebrating in peace. “My country was at war and I spent three years in camp in Zimbabwe before coming to Australia so I am happy to just have peace and happiness at Christmas,” says Elizabeth. Elizabeth says she plans on cooking some traditional Congolese food this Christmas. “It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor, in Congo at Christmas everyone wants to cook chicken, rice, beans and casava leaves,” explains Elizabeth. “We also have a big man beheading beef and lamb to have a big feast but we won’t be doing that here. “Instead my son and I will go to church and I will be cooking chicken, potato and beans for us to eat.”

CHINA

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LISTENING AND HEARING LUCKILY I HAD THE FULL TRANSCRIPT OF THE INTERVIEW AND WAS ABLE TO PROVE THAT I HAD NOT MALIGNED A GENERATION.

I have just ticked another box on getting old. I have started wearing hearing aids. For years, Linda has been telling me that the TV is too loud, that the radio is too loud, everything is too loud. So, I went along to have it confirmed that there was nothing wrong with me; it was Linda who was at fault. Alas, I was to be proved wrong again. I can now hear everything and it bugs the living daylights out of me. I was sitting in my Canberra office working away and listening to my music, as I do every morning. My neighbour rang me to tell me it was very loud. That is when I realised I had left my hearing aids at home. I thought about going the day without them, but I had to ask Malcolm Turnbull a favour in the Party Room Meeting and it would be a whispered conversation. I had to race home and get them. Which brings me to my story. I don’t do the doors. The doors are where the journalists wait for us politicians to come out and trot out the line of the day. I tend to speak what I feel and therefore there is no ‘up’ side at the doors for me. So, I get to work early and don’t come out for anything.

82 DUO MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2014 duomagazine.com.au

I am what they (the back room party people) call ‘high risk’. They know what will come out will be OK but it will be in my language, which is hardly the norm in Canberra. So I stay away from the doors. Not today, though. I made my way towards the doors – the media were still there but were packing up. But as I walked out, they still had time to surround me and asked the question, “the Senate Human Rights Committee has found that asking people to work for the dole is an infringement on their human rights. What is your response”? For the record, I did not say that all people on the dole are at home playing X-Box and eating Cheezels. But I ended up being the story of the day and I received a few emails from people demanding my head. Luckily I had the full transcript of the interview and was able to prove that I had not maligned a generation. But, I cannot help but wonder; if Linda was nicer to me, perhaps a little more tolerant; I would not have had the hearing aids in the first place and would not have had to go out that morning. You always knew it could not possibly be my fault…

PARENTS EVERYWHERE ARE MOANING ABOUT WHAT TO GIVE THEIR CHILDREN. It’s nearly Christmas and now’s the time we start to plan our gift giving. Every year it becomes harder and harder to find a gift to suit. Our children live in a world of affluence, a world of plenty. The last thing they need is more stuff.

FOR THE GIFT TO BE MEANINGFUL IT WILL INVOLVE SOME OF YOUR TIME EITHER CREATING IT OR JOINING IN WITH YOUR CHILD IN AN ACTIVITY OR EXPERIENCE.

In contrast our grandparents lived in a world of need where gifts where precious and few, all were appreciated. So how do we in our world today give a gift that is meaningful? And will be treasured. Start with thinking back to your childhood, how many gifts do you really remember? There is always a few that stand out. Generally the secret to success – is time, your time. It may take some time or planning but usually the best gifts involve your time and an activity shared. A child will never remember the best day they spent watching TV or the latest DVD, but they will remember the first time you took them to the theatre, went camping, fishing, took them drawing by a creek, built a go-cart in the shed. My favourites are a collection of family recipes, a ticket box for keeping all sorts of tickets (each is a memory), a framed childhood toy, or you could write them a letter telling them how much you love them and other meaningful words you’ve been wanting to say, planting a tree together that

Christmas TRADING HOURS

flowers on Xmas or their birthday month. Try a needlework kit and be sure to involve yourself as part of the activity. A lesson in fixing a bike tyre. A cooking lesson, teach how to make that sponge cake, the biscuits making lesson needs to go along with the biscuit cutters. Another wonderful suggestion is a voucher or money towards taking a class or lesson – whether it be a art class, music lesson or sport coach, join in if you can. You are giving a gift that lasts and teaches. For smaller children try the good old cubby house – homemade of course, all you need is a wonderful, large cardboard box, and bring the paints and your time – toddlers and pre-schoolers will love it. Still needing some meaningful gift ideas then have a look at: buzzfeed incredibly-meaningful-gifts-you-can-giveyour-kids. Be assured that for the gift to be meaningful it will involve some of your time either creating it or joining in with your child in an activity or experience. As adults we spend so much of our time working to have money to buy things that we and our children need and want and often togetherness is sacrificed for the “stuff”. This Christmas put the togetherness back into your Christmas and create some meaningful memories for your children.

FAMILY FUN

WITH SO MUCH ON OFFER AT THE BARRA FUN PARK THE WHOLE FAMILY IS SURE TO HAVE THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES.

JEN PARKER, a mum of four, describes the Barra Fun Park as “a real hidden gem”. She recently took her children there to get them out of the house and off the Xbox to enjoy some outdoor family fun. “They loved the water park, which boasts two impressive 5-metre slides.”says Jen. “[The kids were] definitely [excited about] the big slides, and the rockit and catapaults.” But it is not just the kids who will have fun at the Barra Fun Park, Jen says it is also just as much fun for the parents. And being only a five-minute drive from Willows Shopping Centre, it makes for the perfect family day out. “We have so much on offer,” says Belinda Stevenson, who owns and runs the Barra Fun Park with her husband Brent. “We have a water park, big and small dam fishing, water skirmish, cable ski, Townsville’s biggest jumping pillow and a miniature animal farm. We also have two inline cable ski facilities for wakeboarding, kneeboarding, slalom ski or biscuit riding for ages four and over.”

As well as boasting a ‘Big Fish Dam’, which is stocked with huge Barramundi, Belinda says the park has a few more exciting additions for the upcoming school holidays but you will have to visit the park to find out what they are. What makes Barra Fun Park even more attractive is just how affordable it is. “Prices start at $23 for kids and $89 for a family of four,” says Belinda. “And our day prices are inclusive of all the gear you need to enjoy your time here, such as fishing rods and bait, ski gear and life jackets.” As well as life jackets, Barra Fun Park also have trained lifesavers who all hold a minimum bronze medallion qualification, and their water park

lagoon is over two metres deep ensuring a fun, but also safe, landing. And you can either pack a picnic and use the park’s facilities to cook a BBQ, or enjoy the convenience of the fully licensed kiosk. “We also really value our local people and have a loyalty program where we give you your 5th visit free,” says Belinda. “Just download the Barra Fun Park app and scan it each time you come.” The Barra Fun Park is open from 10am–4pm every day (excluding Christmas Day) during the school holidays at 505 Allambie Lane, Kelso. KATE PATEMAN | DIRECTOR | KLP FAMILY LAW

IT IS ALL TOO TABOO! OR IS IT?

Most of us have been affected by divorce, whether we have gone through it ourselves, know someone who has or have even been affected by our parents’ divorce. It is losing its social taboo.

Years gone by, and prior to the Family Law Act coming into effect in 1976, divorce was fault based meaning you had to prove the other person did something wrong to be able to get a divorce. This usually meant that people would hire private investigators so that they could prove wrong doing and get divorced and this had to be done in Court at a hearing. And because of that fault based system, there was a lot of stigma attached to a divorcee because it inherently meant that they did something wrong.

So why do we still use Court proceedings when there are better ways out there to resolve disputes?

It is now a no fault system and divorce is so easy which it wasn’t years ago when you had to go through all sorts of hoops. It was incredibly complicated, now it’s just a question of saying “that’s it”. In fact in 1976 when the Family Law Act came into effect there was a 40% increase in the number of divorces because of the ease of being able to get a divorce. Friends and family are more accepting and there is no longer as much of a stigma (if any) attached to divorce. It is not the hushed secret it was years ago. So why do we still use Court when we don’t have to prove fault and when there are better ways out there to resolve disputes? Why not use a more respectful way to resolve disputes? Sure, you may say we need Court if parties

86 DUO MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2014 duomagazine.com.au

cannot agree on something. But does Court really make it better? I have been before the Court many times and there is usually a lot of waiting time (which clients pay for), sometimes we are told that the Court does not have time to hear the matter, and in most Trials the matters often settle 15 minutes before the trial starts and before we even see the Judge! A lot of costs are spent to get to that certain point in Court and for what – to settle on the steps of Court under pressure and whilst stressed and anxious? Are the Courts now out of time and touch with separated families? Does going to Court only serve to make matters worse for the separating families or the parties’ financial position? What’s the alternative? The alternative and better options are mediation and collaborative Law. Those are the futures of settling disputes in Family Law and many other area of law. The parties have much more control in those processes, it is a more respectful process than Court and your interests are top of the agenda. These processes do not involve a complete stranger (we call them Judges) telling you what you are going to do – in mediation and collaborative law you buy into achieving the outcomes and they are

therefore more durable and it is not a one size fits all approach. It is tailored to you and your family and what you are trying to achieve. We look at what you really want as opposed to just telling you what you should expect and then trying to achieve that. The process involves meetings with everyone in the same room and talking about the goals and interests, and what needs to be done to try and reach those. There are not many letters going back and forth between solicitors (where costs escalate and things can be lost in translation) and the process is not restricted by time and can be as quick or as fast as you want. I will leave you this to ponder. Your time and energy is better spent resolving your matter in a respectful manner, without having to attend Court. I would rather see Court becoming the exception rather than the rule. In saying that I acknowledge that there will be matters that will have to go to court because the parties are so entrenched in each of their interests that they can’t see beyond that or come to a compromise. But when you are faced with either a Family Law dispute, or any other dispute, ask your solicitor about mediation and collaborative law.

NICOLE STOTT-WHITING | PROJECT MANAGER – MARRIAGE AND FAMILY LIFE | CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF TOWNSVILLE

WHAT IS THE LANGUAGE OF LOVE?

For each of us, we need to receive love in certain ways for it to be fulfilling and meaningful. Therefore, we need to not only understand how we like to receive love but also, the way in which the person most significant to us likes to receive love as well. Anyone who has read The 5 Love Languages by Dr Gary Chapman knows that we all express love in different ways and equally like to receive love in different ways. Dr Chapman defines the expression of love as: Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts and Physical Touch. Dr Chapman believes that for each individual there will be one or two of these concepts that is their preferred way of receiving love. Therefore, in our relationships we need to be able to articulate our preferred way of receiving love and also be aware of the way in which our husband/wife/partner also prefers to receive love.

There is no point showering our partner with gifts if all they really desire is some quality time together.

These concepts become very tricky as they require a large degree of awareness about not only ourselves but also our significant other. There is no point showering our partner with gifts if all they really desire is some quality time together. Similarly, we might like to constantly send messages of love to our partner when all they really need is a big hug. The sentiment is lovely but it is not meeting the needs of the other person. It is also easy to fall into the trap of assuming that the way we like to receive love will be the way our

partner likes to receive love too. The opposite is possible also. I remember once someone telling me that they don’t buy flowers for their wife because they themselves don’t like flowers. My question of course was, ‘but does your wife like flowers?’ Once upon a time, love was love and there wasn’t too much more to be said on the matter. As time has gone on though, it has become apparent that love is a multi-faceted concept and we each like to be loved in different ways. When I look at my own relationship with my husband it is obvious that we both like to receive love in different ways. Every morning I wake up to a cup of coffee made by my husband. For some strange reason he actually makes a nicer cup of coffee for me than I make for myself and I look forward to this little act of love every day. I also receive, every once in a while, a small note where he expresses his love as he knows that holds great meaning for me. In return, after 21 years together, I know that he likes me to hold his hand or place my hand on his knee when we are together.

If couples aren’t aware of how each person likes love to be expressed to them, it is highly possible that important needs will go unmet. Over time these unmet needs may lead to resentment and bigger problems down the track. It may also be difficult to pinpoint exactly what the problem is, particularly if the relationship comes across as quite loving. The issue will not be whether or not the couple express love to each other but whether or not they express their love in a way that is meaningful to the other person. At this time of the year when Christmas lists are frantically being made it might be helpful to really take some time to think about the needs of the person you love and to ask yourself the question, ‘how do I give them what they need?’

WE CAN ALSO REFLECT ON OUR ACHIEVEMENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AND THE THINGS THAT MADE US GET OUT OF BED IN THE MORNING.

WE WILL REMEMBER the people who touched our lives and others who helped us. We will also be grateful that we have had the opportunity to help others. The feeling of Christmas and the sense of goodwill and giving has been a great part of the Townsville Hospital Foundation for this year 2014. We began with the Cotton On Foundation joining with us to create the RUN Townsville event raising $200,000 for the redevelopment of the Children’s Ward. It continued with the generosity of local sponsors supporting this event and others who came bearing gifts with. Southern Cross Austereo and Radio 4TO with Give Me 5 for Kids targeted their appeal efforts to support the Children’s Ward redevelopment. The community and businesses gathered around and pledged their support over the next four years of our anticipated fundraising to enable us to bring our gift to the children of North Queensland. joanne hoskins INDUSTRY LIAISON OFFICER | TEC-NQ

Having worked at Townsville Personnel as an employment coordinator, and Commerce Queensland as a training administrator, Joanne Hoskins had developed a knack for identifying the right personnel for available positions by the time she joined Tec-NQ in 2008. Now working directly with employers to facilitate apprenticeships, Joanne is passionate about work placement for students to gain exposure in their chosen trades and, ultimately, work opportunities and employment outcomes. Together with her fellow Industry Liaison Officer Jennifer Trybula, she’s secured apprenticeships for 79 per cent of qualifying students in 2013 – and in a tough market too! “Another arm of my role is to look after our full-time apprentice training program and coordinate with employers and apprentices to assist them in progressing through their apprenticeship,” Joanne says. “I look at the big picture and take on both student and employers’ perspectives to ensure all parties are a good fit.” One “proud mummy” moment Jo recalls was when a student she helped secure an apprenticeship for was recognised at Tec-NQ’s awards night last year. “He’s now a qualified carpenter and has his own business,” Joanne says. “I think Tec-NQ provides exciting opportunities for students in both Townsville and regional areas who want to

succeed in their chosen trade. Before Tec-NQ opened its doors in 2007 there was no organisation providing those opportunities.” Yet again, Tec-NQ is stepping up to provide another opportunity by opening an accommodation facility, allowing students and apprentices from regional areas to also benefit from Tec-NQ’s unique training and education program. “As always, meeting the new cohort of students and seeing them relish the opportunities we provide excites me,” Joanne says. “With the right guidance, mentoring from the great staff we have at Tec-NQ, and the persistence of their industry liaison officer not giving up in placing them, I’ve seen some great outcomes.” Joanne is also very grateful for the career mentoring she has received from fellow leaders in education and training, in particular Roberta Cook from Townsville Personnel. “I started with Mrs Cook (she will always be Mrs Cook to me) when I was about 16-17, which is the same age of the kids I’m working with now,” Joanne says. “She worked very hard and was very customer-focused. She would work until 2am in the morning and then get up again at 5am to keep her customers happy. I think I’ve inherited a little bit of that.”

kari arbouin ASSOCIATE VICE CHANCELLOR | CQUNIVERSITY

Kari’s desire for adventure led her to an impulse buy of a plane ticket from her homeland, Scotland, to Australia ‘for a year’. That was 24 years ago. Kari put her skills as a nurse, and then Director of Nursing, into use in the outback town of Julia Creek, introducing preventative health initiatives that continue today. After eight years in the west, she relocated her family to Townsville to take up a position at the Wesley Hospital and quickly made the inaugural Director of Clinical Services. In 2000, Kari moved to James Cook University where she worked in a variety of senior management positions for 12 years. These included Director of Quality, Director of Orpheus Research Station and acting CEO of JCU Singapore campus. “Last year I decided it was time for a change and moved to CQUniversity as their Director of Campus Development and now as an Associate Vice Chancellor,” Kari says. As an Associate Vice Chancellor Kari oversees the development of the CQUniversity Townsville Study Centre and expects to open the CQUniversity Townsville campus in 2015. “The other part of my position is identifying and establishing study centres in smaller communities throughout Australia to support our distance education students,” Kari says. “I’ve recently opened centres in Charters Towers, Perth and Karratha (in the Pilbara). CQUniversity has been extending its support centres and hubs for distance learning and now has 23 delivery sites across five states of Australia.” Kari draws on other industries and organisations, including her experience in health, to find creative solutions to challenges in education. “It’s important not to get caught up in thinking that solutions can only come from within your own industry,” Kari says. “I love looking for creative ways to address a problem, to inspire colleagues and teams or to improve a process in ways that might be regarded as ‘outside the box’.” Kari says there’s more emphasis placed around how to provide learning that matches a student’s lifestyle now than when she was at university. “It now doesn’t matter if a student is working part-time, fulltime, has family commitments, or is thousands of kilometres from a university, they can still pursue their educational goals,” she says. Throughout her working life, Kari has continued to develop her own education and now has postgraduate qualifications in business, law, health management and public health, and tropical medicine. She’s also researching towards a PhD.

Constant learning and growing has been an important part of Katrina’s career journey. Following a passion for being active, she originally trained to be a PE teacher but says she “always knew” she wanted to be a careers advisor one day. After graduating from UQ Katrina worked in the State Education system for a year. She then applied to do her postgrad studies in Careers Guidance at UQ but was told she was “too young”. “So I taught both primary and secondary PE in the state and independent sectors and spent several years as a Boarding Supervisor,” Katrina says. When her family moved to Townsville for work opportunities, Katrina was keen to try again for tertiary acceptance. “As soon as we came to Townsville in 2000, I started my Masters in Careers Guidance and Counselling at JCU and have never looked back,” she says. As The Cathedral School’s Careers Advisor, Katrina Wilshire helps teenagers realise their strengths and talents and direct their energies into exploring career pathways. “I’ve been given endless opportunities at Cathedral to create programs and support students in their career exploration,” Katrina says. “I started my Masters in Careers Guidance and Counselling at JCU in 2000 and haven’t looked back.” Passionate about listening to teenagers, Katrina says that educators need to beware of the temptation to tell them what to do. “When we make learning relevant and student-driven, teenagers become passionate about what’s ahead for them and their study becomes their pathway to their future dreams,” she says. “The world is full of opportunities if we allow our youth to follow their own path. We need only motivate and direct them and watch them achieve.” Katrina gets a thrill out of running into past students and asking them about their career pathway and how it has unfolded since leaving school. “I really get a kick out of hearing their stories, or related messages from proud parents who want to tell you the achievements of their children since leaving school,” she says.

Jennifer Trybula knows firsthand that the trades can take you all over the world. When her husband Troy, a diesel fitter, accepted a job in Australia with a national manufacturing chain, they decided Townsville was the place to be. “When we left Wisconsin in 2008 we decided we never wanted to be cold again,” Jennifer says. “Townsville was the solution!” In 2010, Jennifer took on her current role as an Industry Liaison Officer at Tec-NQ, a unique role that looks after students, apprentices and employers. “I work directly with employers and students to facilitate apprenticeships,” Jennifer says. “I work with employers to source work placement for students to gain exposure to the trades and possible apprenticeship opportunities. I work with students to provide feedback on their performance and advise them on their career development.” Since August, Jennifer has also taken responsibility for promoting Tec-NQ’s new accommodation facility, opening next year. “It’s allowed me to travel out to the state’s regions, which I’ve really enjoyed, and the response has been fantastic,” she says. Jennifer is now enjoying some of the fruits of all her hard work with the first group of students that she helped find jobs completing their apprenticeships and becoming qualified tradespeople. “Our students are 15 to 16 years old when they start in our program. They literally transform from kids to adults right in front our eyes,” Jennifer says. “By the time they graduate, they have such an appreciation for what we have done for them. I really enjoy catching up with our full-time apprentices to find out how they are going.” Recalling an indigenous student who was a state finalist for the Queensland Training Awards, Jennifer says it was wonderful to see him adopt a leadership position within his class. “I remember him telling me about how, in his previous school, he was just an ordinary kid, nothing special,” Jennifer says. “He really appreciated the respect he got at Tec-NQ and how our program had allowed him to become a high achiever. “We are fortunate here at Tec-NQ to have great support from local industry with employers who really care about supporting opportunities for young people. Without that support from local industry, we wouldn’t accomplish the great work that we do.”

Annie had two very supportive teachers supervise her practicum. They recommended her to the principal and a position as an English and Science teacher at St Pat’s soon followed.

MARK DYER During a person’s legal career many choices are faced regarding the direction of that career. There are sought-after positions available in government instrumentalities, in corporations and at the Bar but solicitor Mark Dyer has remained in private practice. Why? “I guess it’s the humanity involved in dealing with people’s private and confidential needs and problems,” Mark says. “Quite often the clients are experiencing stressful circumstances in their lives. What characterises that relationship are the elements of trust and respect between client and solicitor.” As a senior practitioner in Townsville, Mark’s role is to supplement the talent that exists in Kirwan’s Rapid Legal Solutions (RLS) office under the principal solicitor John Windridge. A young, dynamic and progressive legal practice, RLS provides specialist conveyancing services and services in general law. Mark moved to Townsville in December 1979 after becoming disillusioned with practice as a junior solicitor in Hobart. “I discovered a classified ad for a position in Townsville for a solicitor to join a firm retained by the then Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Legal Service,” he recalls. “Applications for the position were to be addressed to a Lawrence Neasey. I recognised the name immediately as Lawrence was a graduate of the University of Tasmania who was two or three years ahead of me. When he received my application, he phoned and asked me to jump on the next flight to Townsville.” After three-and-a-half years as a solicitor serving the Townsville Aboriginal and Islander community, Mark was intending to return to Hobart when he was approached by Pat O’Shea. They soon joined forces as O’Shea & Dyer Solicitors and would go on to spend nearly 30 years together. While he’s still enjoying practising law, now with Rapid Legal Solutions, Mark has always maintained recreational interests outside of work. You may have seen him in Theatre INQ’s production of Cosi, where he played a manic depressive former solicitor with a stutter. A passion for acting has followed through to Mark and Diana’s children, with their youngest daughter Harriet working in live theatre, TV and now movies in Sydney. “People would’ve seen her as Patricia in the recent Channel 9 series of Love Child,” Mark says. Mark and Diana’s eldest daughter Madeleine and her new husband Dan were recently in Townsville filming a Bollywood movie called The Departure Lounge. They’ve recently started their own production company, Maddan Productions, and relocated to Melbourne. The Dyers’ youngest child, John, has moved to Melbourne too, where he’s hoping to undertake a course at RMIT and has auditioned for a couple of TV ads. Formerly of Michel’s Restaurant, Michel continued his passions for fine food and catering when he purchased Essentially Fresh Deli in Belgian Gardens last March and added a kitchen to the business. The deli stocks the freshest fruit and vegetables available from local growers and daily from the Brisbane Markets. Fully licenced, Essentially Fresh caters for weddings and all types of private functions. “I create menus to suit each individual need and budget and my team will work with you to create that special occasion,” Michel says. “Quality ingredients, a modern approach to the menus and happy staff is the key to pleasing our customers.” Essentially Fresh now also offers a selection of gourmet meals to take away and the deli provides a large variety of Australian and imported cheeses and has one of the largest varieties of olives and dips available. French-born in Casa Blanca North Africa, of Spanish origin, and Australian by choice Michel has plenty of culinary inspiration to draw upon. Not to mention the countries he visits on his yearly motorcycle tours in different parts of the world. “So far I’ve covered Peru, Bolivia, Vietnam, Morocco, Italy and I’m off to India, Bhutan and Nepal in March next year,” Michel says. With a father who worked in civil construction, Michel moved around a lot in his formative years as well. “We then migrated to Australia in 1971 to Melbourne and I worked extensively around Australia, including in the bush, and eventually made Townsville my home,” he says.

Having run four successful establishments in Townsville over the last 35 years, Michel is a hard-working achiever like his father and his father-in-law. DR PRAVEEN KUMAR (DR PK) You may have already heard of Dr Praveen Kumar (Dr PK as he’s known by his patients), who has been in the news for spending $520,000 of his own money to open an Australian-first privately funded free indigenous health centre. Based in Kirwan, the My Family Doctors – Indigenous Health Wing caters for the indigenous community and Pacific Islanders. The centre will have six Aboriginal health workers and Dr PK has plans to give out personal health packs to patients and run specific clinics targeting the main health issues of this group of patients. Renowned for taking initiatives others shy away from, Dr PK is no stranger to establishing Townsville ‘firsts’. He was the first GP to bring 24-7 bulk billing to Townsville, the first non-corporate to offer courtesy bus pick-ups and drop-offs for patients and the first to offer a ‘community fridge’. “I buy fruits and veggies and let our patients take them home to enable them to eat healthy meals,” Dr PK says. “A lot of corporate companies and generous patients donate food towards the idea too.” Dr PK is also owner/director of My Family Doctors @ Urban Quarter – in total his group practice consists of 15 GPs. “A lot of people have helped me achieve what I have to date, and I’d like to thank them as they are part of this success story,” Dr PK says. UNDERSTANDING FRINGE BENEFIT TAXES

Want to give your employees a gift to say thankyou for their efforts this Christmas? The flexibility of fringe benefits could be the answer… if you know the rules.

As an employer, you know that a fringe benefit is a ‘payment’ to an employee, but in a different form to salary or wages. How much this benefit is determines how much tax you may need to pay on this benefit. FBT (Fringe Benefits Tax) is paid by you as the employer. Don’t just assume that only companies pay FBT. Your business entity will pay FBT regardless of whether you are a sole trader, partnership, trustee, corporation, unincorporated association, government or government authority. If you make a payment to an employee (that is subject to withholding obligations), and you provide a fringe benefit, it is more than likely you will be subject to FBT and this tax is payable whether or not you have to pay other taxes such as income tax. The cost of providing fringe benefits and the amount of FBT you pay, however, may be claimed as an income tax deduction to the entity. Fortunately, there is a bit of flexibility. You can provide a benefit up to a certain amount before you are subject to the FBT rules and that is a benefit considered a ‘minor’ benefit. This is a

You can provide a benefit up to a certain amount before you are subject to the FBT rules…

benefit which is both: less than $300 in value, and is unreasonable to treat as a fringe benefit. It is treated as tax exempt. This is good for employers who want to give staff a Christmas present, for example. Say you provide a single gift to each employee of a bottle of wine or perfume, this would be a tax exempt benefit if the value was less than $300. Please note however, that as per the ATO, ‘if the gift is provided at a Christmas party, the gift needs to be considered separately to the Christmas party when considering the minor benefits threshold’. Another example of exempt benefits could be that of a gift of flowers to employees on special occasions, provided that this is given on an irregular and infrequent basis, and where each individual benefit had a value of less than $300. Bear in mind though that flowers given to an employee each fortnight would be given on a frequent and regular basis and would not be an exempt benefit, even where the value of each individual benefit is less than $300.

provided to a new employee (such as a food hamper), meals provided on an ad hoc basis to an employee three times in the year (where on each occasion the value is up to $75) and allowing employees to have waste or leftover materials of a business, such as packing cases or fabric remnants. These benefits don’t mean that the employee could not receive different minor benefits. Take for example the employee who receives a Christmas hamper from her employer worth $250, a bunch of ‘get well’ flowers for $100, and a pen set valued at $150. The total cost of all benefits is $500, however the value of each individual benefit is less than $300. As a result, each benefit can qualify as an exempt minor benefit (subject to the FBT rules). So consider that while the exemption amount per person is less than $300 generally, there are a few more boxes to tick and your best course of action would be check with your tax accountant to make sure you are not making any incorrect assumptions.

Subject to satisfying the FBT exemption conditions, other examples include a welcome gift

HELPING YOUR LOCAL ECONOMY

What role do you play and how do you impact on the economy? In a HUGE way!

How can you help? It’s simple! Buy local. Support small business.

When the word ‘economy’ is used, it’s normally in the finance section of the news, or during a talk about national issues and it’s pretty easy to tune out thinking ‘I can’t do anything about that’. This couldn’t be further from the truth. In everyday life, our local economy is a massive intertwined web of money flowing to and from everyday people like you and I. Money flows from one person to the next and then on to another. This flow of money is far reaching and not always apparent when you make a purchase. It’s important to understand your role in the economic community as a consumer of goods, as it is your dollars that keep people employed and the economy ticking along.

the shop assistant spends their money on the weekend. It will likely be completely different to what the farmer spends their money on, but they are both as important as each other. They might purchase new clothes, be looking to buy a new house, attend university or buy new machinery. Every transaction that you make has a huge impact on your local economy and this is why it’s so important to support local business! There are many contributing factors to a flourishing economy. Large infrastructure projects are great as they employ a large number of workers, who in turn spend their money in the economy. They can also utilise the services of equipment hire companies for example. Industrial plants are another source of employment. Government centres like schools, universities, hospitals and main roads also employ a large number of locals in certain areas. At the other end of the spectrum are small businesses. A corner store, a hairdresser, the post office, a restaurant owner, the list is endless and that’s because of the giant role they play in employing people and keeping the economy rolling.

When you buy from a shop, the impact has far reaching implications. You might buy a piece of fruit from the fruit store. Just some of the people who benefit from this transaction are: the shop assistant, who is employed by the shop owner. The shop owner benefits from the margin/profit they charge. The landlord of the store benefits, because the shop owner can pay the rent. The farmer who sold the shop owner the fruit of course benefits and so on and so on. Remember this is just a few small components from the one transaction! Think about where

When people are employed (and feeling safe) in their jobs, they tend to spend more money.

This money of course benefits large corporations (think supermarkets, shopping centres etc.) and small organisations (think Mum & Dad businesses, small shops, pubs, mechanics, butchers, services) alike, which ensures more people stay employed which in turn, keeps the positive cycle of money flowing through the community. The worst thing that can happen to a community is for the consumers to not spend money. When you don’t spend money, it does benefit your bank account but it also causes a detriment to the wider community. Large corporations cut jobs. Small businesses shut their doors. The reality of the cycle is it means less and less money flowing through the local economy, impacting most on small business. So, how can you help? It’s simple! Buy local. Support small business. Look for Australian (and even better, North Queensland) grown produce. Most importantly TELL EVERYONE! Did you have an amazing treatment at Bellanova? A delicious curry from Masala? Great service from Otto’s? It’s not always the closest store and it’s not always the cheapest – but consider how you can best support your local economy. You’re its most important customer!

THERE’S NO BIGGER PARTY THAN NEW YEAR’S EVE – AND THERE’S NO BETTER LOCATION THAN THE STRAND. TOWNSVILLE REVELLERS YOUNG AND OLD are invited to attend Townsville City Council’s annual New Year’s Eve Pictures in the Park celebrations. This year, the city will be celebrating under the stars in true North Queensland fashion, with warm weather, clear skies and two fireworks displays to close out the year with a bang. Mayor Cr Jenny Hill invited the community to join the festivities. “New Year’s Eve is a great night out and we have planned an evening to accommodate revellers both young and old,” Cr Hill said.

CELEBRATE THE NEW YEAR WITH PICTURES IN THE PARK

The event begins at 7pm with Disney movie Planes (rated G) broadcast on the big screen, followed by Oz the Great and Powerful (rated PG) at 9pm. The first fireworks display will begin at 8.45pm off Strand Park foreshore, with another spectacular round of fireworks at the stroke of midnight at The Strand and on Nelly Bay, Magnetic Island. There will also be a live telecast of the Sydney New Year’s Eve fireworks, which consistently ranks as one of the largest and most watched pyrotechnic displays across the globe, so there’s no excuse to stay at home and watch on from your lounge room. “The early fireworks display is perfect for families with young ones who don’t have to stay out until midnight to celebrate. “The event is a great opportunity for residents and visitors to our city to set up a picnic, watch a movie and take in the idyllic backdrop of Cape Cleveland between both fireworks displays.” Although the best location for watching the fireworks will be at Strand Park, there are also other great viewing areas such as Castle Hill, Nelly Bay, and numerous high rise apartment buildings. Come along and join in the family-friendly fun and welcome in the New Year in a traditional relaxed no-fuss North Queensland style. Food vendors will be on site selling food and coffee. Details of the event can be found on council’s website www.townsville.qld.gov.au.

DUO MAGAZINE IS PROUD TO PARTNER WITH PERC TUCKER REGIONAL GALLERY AND SHANE FITZGERALD, MANAGER GALLERY SERVICES, TOWNSVILLE CITY COUNCIL, IN A SERIES THAT DISCUSSES CURRENT TRENDS, MUSINGS AND INSIGHTS INTO CONTEMPORARY VISUAL ARTS.

ARTICULATE SUE SMITH FOUND INSPIRATION for her upcoming major exhibition Thirty-Six Views of Castle Hill whilst living in Townsville, explaining that she “enjoyed the way Castle Hill kept popping up as I was moving around the city in my daily routines.” Hailing from Brisbane, Smith has travelled extensively, also calling the Capricorn Coast, London, and (currently) Rockhampton home at various points in her life. While her stay in Townsville – at which time she worked as the Curator at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery – was relatively short, the city left an indelible mark on her, as evidenced by this most recent body of works. The artist’s desire to depict so many views of our iconic landmark was spurred by the 18th century Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai and his famous woodblock prints of Mount Fuji. Smith explains, “The fact that Hokusai’s intention was to depict his mountain from many different perspectives was interesting to me: his project suggests that in order to understand something (a place, or a people) you need to look at it from as many different angles as possible. This idea, in contrast to the notion that there is only one way of knowing something, became evident to me as I progressed with the series.” While each work is punctuated by a representation of Castle Hill, unified by this singular central motif, Thirty-Six Views of Castle Hill is not simply a traditional landscape exhibition. Smith has not only provided viewers with thirty-six resolved glimpses of a landmark; but also with thirtysix insights into our city, its history and contemporary socio-political landscape; and more impressively, thirty-six contemplations of universal themes such as the turbulent landscape of the human condition, explored in an unchained fashion through “a paralleluniverse Townsville”. Smith explains that her broad conceptual points of inspiration are borne out of her personal experiences, “in general, my work grows out of my small town, country and big city experiences and is concerned with time, attentiveness, the sea, the wind and birds, people, emotions, Eastern and Western culture, politics and social criticism.”

01

A FRESH TAKE ON A MUCH-LOVED ICON

02

03

The varied body of works presented by Smith in Thirty-Six Views of Castle Hill underline her “affinity with surrealist and magical realist art”, and also her interest in “the tension between representation and abstraction.” The paintings sit somewhere between the clinical explorations of the urban landscape produced by the late Jeffrey Smart, and more playful, hyper-real surrealist works, such as the Pure series of noted Australian contemporary artist Matthew Quick. Smith states, “my own work is planned and anchored in the everyday, but it does contain elements that are unusual and inexplicable. For me, these strange elements seem to halt the viewer and not only suggest an experience but prompt it, inviting him or her to step into the place of imagining. In order to express my awareness of this world and worlds beyond adequately but in terms relevant to the broader human condition, I often marry images from photographs with memories and imaginings, as well as with ideas from art, politics, films, poetry, conversations and music.”

Thirty-Six Views of Castle Hill appeals on many levels – immediately evident is the exhibition’s charming celebration of our region and its natural beauty. However, Smith’s works are also extremely successful in their ambition to ‘halt’ the viewer, and engage them in simultaneously humorous and serious conversations. Thirty-Six Views of Castle Hill is on display at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery from 19 December 2014 – 15 February 2015. Please note the Gallery will be closed for the Christmas/New Year period from 23 December 2014 – 4 January 2015 inclusive.

MATURITY BEYOND HER YEARS

THIS LOCAL ABSTRACT ARTIST IS TAKING HER ARTWORK FROM THE STUDIO TO YOUR HOME. WORDS ISIS SYMES Her vibrant artworks show maturity beyond her 27 years incorporating great detail, texture and colour in every piece. “I draw inspiration from all types of patterns and colours in nature – in particular the land and sea,” Brenda says. “I’m forever capturing small detailed photos on my iPhone and using them later for painting ideas and designs; from a coffee spill to a close up image of a fish.”

SHE’S a 27 year-old local artist with big ambitions: to have her paintings shown in every home, office and hotel in Townsville and beyond. This is Brenda Stone’s dream and she is one step closer to living it. Born in Melbourne and raised in Townsville, the young aspiring abstract artist is heading in leaps and bounds when it comes to her artwork. The talented artist has already had her work exhibited in local galleries and restaurants and has also just been commissioned to work with Doble Homes in producing artwork for their display home village. I incorporate trending interior colours in order to accompany modern homes and I also work with interior designers in producing contemporary artwork for each space,” Brenda says. “I’m looking forward to painting for these new homes.”

Brenda is a Calvary Christian College graduate and says she has been interested in painting since school. “I’ve always loved being artistic and creative. My nana was an artist (realistic landscapes) and my sister was very artistic while at school. I remember watching them both and being encouraged by their passion. This nurtured my love for art,” says Brenda. The artist took her passion one step further studying a Bachelor of Visual Arts degree at James Cook University where she graduated with Honours. While many of Brenda’s artworks can be seen on display all over Townsville including in local homes and hotels, the artist hopes to one day have her own studio/gallery. “I would paint all day long if I could!” “I ultimately want to be doing this full time, in my own studio which doubles as a gallery,” Brenda says. “I aim to work with interior designers, builders, hotels and clients to create an eye-catching piece of artwork which features their desired colours, theme and design. It brings me so much joy

110 DUO MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2014 duomagazine.com.au

doing it and I want it to be as equally satisfying for the viewer.“ When asked which gallery she dreamed of having her work shown, the response was simply humble. “Possibly the GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art – Brisbane) but actually, my dream is to have my paintings in every home, office and hotel in Townsville and beyond. I love bringing a fresh burst of colour and unique dynamic to each and every space – whether new or old.” Brenda’s work can be viewed at: www.brendastoneabstractart.com.au or you can follow her on www.facebook.com/ BrendaStoneArt and instagram.com/brendastoneart.

AKA: Berro, The Tadpole. You are renowned for: Contributing to the positive development of the lives of young people through the sport of competitive swimming. What song reflects your personality: Here Comes the Sun by the Beatles. I don’t tend to dwell on negative things for long. What overseas city would you love to move to: I wouldn’t. I have visited a lot of places around the world and nothing compares with what we have in Australia. As I child I always… dreamt of representing Australia at the Olympics. If you had a superpower what would it be? Be able to read people’s minds. Right now I wish I was… not on a plane going to a meeting! Favourite day of the year: Christmas Day – a day for the family. The one thing you can’t live without: My family. Townsville is a great place to live because… of the people, the relaxed lifestyle and the ease of living. What is your trademark fashion style: Ugly Crocs for the pool deck. In five years from now I hope I am… semi-retired and doing a lot more fishing. Last gift you gave someone: My niece was knocked off her bike coming home from work. My wife and I are having her bike fixed and we’ll give it to her as a gift. Best advice you have been given: Competitive swimming is not who you are, it is what you do. Biggest regret: Not having run a full marathon before I turned 50. Where is the one place visitors to Townsville must see: Maggie Island. The best day(s) of your life: My wedding day (almost 25 years ago!); the birth of my two children – Samantha and Jack. Pick two celebrities to be your parents: Audrey Hepburn (the epitome of style and class) and Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones (he seems the most real of the action hero actors). The motto you live by: Respect is not given it is earned.

AKA: El or Elvistine. You are renowned for: My big smile and my boisterous laugh. People say they can hear me before they see me. What song reflects your personality: I have always had a slight liking to Johnny Cougar Mellencamp’s Hurt So Good. What overseas city would you love to move to: I’d like to visit America for a holiday but in all honesty, I wouldn’t live anywhere else but Australia. We are so lucky here. As I child I always… got into trouble. I always wanted my own way in everything and if I didn’t get what I wanted I would always throw tantrums. If you ask my husband nothing much has changed. Right now I wish I was… on a tropical island being spoilt. Working in the hospitality industry you really get to appreciate when someone else serves you.Favourite day of the year: My birthday. I always have a great birthday. The one thing you can’t live without: My husband. We’ve been together for 28 years and married for 22. We have worked side by side in the business for almost 10 years. Lots of people ask us how we can possibly work together. We don’t have any children so we really cherish each other’s company. Oh, did I mention we have 18 staff who we class as our children. What is your trademark fashion style: I always like to keep up with the new look in clothes but you will never see me in a dress. I always wear pants or shorts. In five years from now I hope I am… Retired. Biggest regret: Probably not being able to have children. I always would have liked to have seen who my kids looked like, me or my husband. Where is the one place visitors to Townsville must see: probably the Strand and The Coffee club in Castletown of course. The best day of your life: The day I married my husband. He really is my rock and I would be lost without him. The motto you live by: Always be happy and enjoy life to the fullest because life really is too short.

Best advice you have been given: If you are going to make a mistake make a loud one (I was a trumpet player originally). Biggest regret: Not seeing some of my favourite bands during the sixties and seventies. Where is the one place visitors to Townsville must see: The Strand including Jezzine Barracks. What overseas city would you like to move to: I originally lived in Japan, so Townsville was my overseas city of choice. When I was having lunch with my friends at C-Bar on the Strand a while ago, I saw dolphins jumping in the ocean. In that moment I said to myself “what a beautiful place we live in!” I am very lucky. As a child I always… wanted to speak multiple languages and travel to different countries. If you have a superpower what would it be: The ability to read people’s and animal’s minds. Maybe more with animals, it would be wonderful to communicate with different creatures. Best advice you have been given: Do your best. The best day of your life: The day I became a mum. I have two beautiful daughters. What do you think about when you are alone in your car: What do I eat today? What do I need to do today? Right now I wish I was: Relaxed! Last gift you gave someone: Perfect Potion product and massage for my friend’s birthday. Favourite day of the year: Christmas. I feel holy and enjoy the extra love from everyone. The one thing you can’t live without: My loved ones. Family and friends. In 5 years from now you hope you are: Still fit and healthy and enjoy my job. The motto you live by: Don’t chase people. Be yourself, do your own thing and work hard. The right people (the ones who really belong in your life) will come to you and stay. What’s your trademark fashion style: Louis Vuitton bag. LAST WORD

‘TWAS THE LIGHTS BEFORE CHRISTMAS LES SEARSTON BRINGS THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS TO TOWNSVILLE WITH HIS ANNUAL, WELL-REGARDED CHRISTMAS LIGHT DISPLAY AT HIS HOUSE IN KIRWAN.

Les Searston

WORDS NICOLE THOMSON-PRIDE PHOTOGRAPHY SANDRA HEIER EVENSEN

GOING BACK 15 YEARS, Les Searston saw a house on the corner of Banfield Drive and Dalrymple Road decorated with lights to celebrate Christmas, and Les fell in love with the concept. In the years since then, Les and his house on Young Circuit, Kirwan, have become a bit of a star in Townsville around Christmas time, as people flock to his place to marvel at his brilliant Christmas light display. “On an average night you would probably get at least 1,000 cars come through,” says Les, who once had 50,000 light bulbs in his Christmas display. “[And] when you get closer to Christmas it gets really full on.“ But it is not just the dazzling lights people come to see; the focus of Les’ display is all of his statues and figurines, and Santa, of course. “I dress up as Santa quite a few times a week,” says Les, who hands out about 3,000 lollipops every year. “The children always tell [me] what they want for Christmas [and] my standard line is, ‘There are lots of kids wanting that present, so I can’t promise, but I’ve heard you’ve been very good and you’re a very special kid, so I’ll make sure you get something special for Christmas.’.” Another showstopper at Les’ house in the lead up to Christmas is the Tropic Voices choir. “Don and Julie, and the wonderful people at Tropic Voices will be singing carols out the front [of my house] on

128 DUO MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2014 duomagazine.com.au

22nd [and] 23rd December,” explains Les. “[They] usually kick off about 7.15[pm] for a real good hour or so.“ And throughout December people come from far and wide to enjoy Les’ spirit of Christmas. He says he has had repeat visitors from Italy, as well as lots of visitors from Innisfail and Ingham. And it’s the people who keep coming back that spur Les on to keep up with his Christmas display tradition. “I love the people,” says Les. “I really do love just talking to people and having a chat with complete strangers that pop by.” If you are wondering how long it takes to build a display like this, Les says he starts setting up at the start of November and works on it over the weekends for the whole month. And he has just one golden rule when it comes to his Christmas display: “Never turn [the lights] on, except to test them, before the 1st of December.” But how many more years will Les keep this up for? He can’t see him self stopping any time soon. “There will probably come a time when I’ll have to call someone and say, ‘I need some help putting some lights up on the roof.’.” To view Les’ Christmas display visit his house at 6 Young Circuit, Kirwan, any night before Christmas Day.
