COVERGIRL

COVERGIRL Gabrielle Vacher Age: 20 Occupation: Recent JCU graduate with a Bachelor of Multimedia Journalism. Where were you born: Mackay, although my family moved to the Burdekin when I was three years old. Tell us something about yourself? I am quite coordinated on the piano keys. After completing my Eighth Grade AMEB piano exams, I started playing the guitar and even gave my roommates the ‘blues’ by attempting to master the harmonica. I am also often very consumed by the sky and frequently study the stars – the Monty Python Galaxy Song never fails to amuse and astound me. What have you got going on at the moment? Like most University students, I am currently attempting to accumulate some savings by working part time in retail and in radio promotions. As a keen graduate journalist I also recently interned at WIN News, I write freelance for various local publications and I volunteer at Community Radio. Tune in for my live broadcasting, ‘Tuesday Night Jazz’ – I hope to be the Howard Moon jazz maverick of Townsville. What would surprise people to know about you? For those who have noticed a blonde girl behind the wheel of a white Volkswagen Kombi Van, she actually happens to be me. I have been driving my thirty-eightyear-old vehicle ‘Dott’ (short for Dorothy) for five years. Despite the occasionally uncomfortable lack of air-conditioning in the summer heat, Dott is irreplaceable and undeniably groovy. Anything else you’d like to add? Although I was quite nervous before the shoot, I had an incredibly relaxed afternoon and adored the company of the entire team. I am grateful for Kristen and Rikki’s exceptional hair and makeup talents and for Matthew and Clare’s ability to make me feel surprisingly comfortable in front of the camera. To the DUO staff, thank you – you are providing a wonderful opportunity and experience for local women. DUO MAGAZINE JANUARY 2015 duomagazine.com.au 11

WELCOME

I’M DREAMING OF ANOTHER VOLKSWAGEN KOMBI When the enchanting Gabrielle Vacher arrived for her cover shoot, the second most exciting thing for me was her Kombi. Like many men of my vintage, I’d like to own a Kombi again. My first one and I had a very sad parting. She was a 1970 model that my Dad and I modified into a camper. It had timber plywood walls (very on-trend), a big double bed and cupboards with a sink, tap and gas twin burner cooktop. No surf racks because I lived in Ipswich but it did have the spare tyre mounted on the ‘bullbar’. We rebuilt the engine, repainted her inside and out, new carpets and stereo, the works. She was a real beauty. The very day we finished my girlfriend at the time (still a good mate and decades before Stacey) were driving through Limestone Park that evening when I realised – the car’s on fire! Flames were coming out of the engine around into the back of the van igniting the (tasteful) wood panelling and the bed! We jumped out and (just like in the movies) started yelling for people to “Get back – it’s going to explode!” Fortunately it didn’t but the firies arrived, smashed in the windows, filled it up with liquid and departed. Seems the plastic fuel line was the culprit. She’ll be right my father said at the time of attaching it instead of a rubber one. Soon my brother Darryl came in his (aircraft carrier size) Valiant Regal and towed us home. The next day, Dad and I started again but this time we had to be more creative with our plastering. All the body panels had slight ripples which we smoothed out with bog and sculpted into our idea of a ‘Kombi shape’. My father was always an enthusiastic spray painter especially as he only needed a vacuum cleaner (you put the hose on the other side) and he would mix whatever paint was on hand to achieve either a greyish purple or baby sh*t brown. We chose baby sh*t brown. We were more rushed this second time and we ended up with what, in advertising terms, I’d call an ‘orange skin effect’. There were tiny little bubbles all over the paint surface. Millions of them. I decided I had to sell it so I drove to a car yard and parked about 50 yards away. I asked the salesman what he’d give me for the Kombi over there? He impressed me with his eyesight because he asked me if I’d painted it with a broom? And I said no, a vacuum cleaner. Yours is a straight-down-the-line sign – never afraid to tell it like it is. You want, and deserve, only the very best. And, this year, you intend to get it. From the start, you’re given planetary permission to take what’s yours. The cosmos also introduces playfulness and good fortune. Even in your love life, you dare to be sassier. Aims soar higher!

20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY

19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH

21 MARCH – 20 APRIL

21 APRIL – 20 MAY

January gives Aquarians little cause for complaint – a total contrast from months past. The time’s right to get the ball rolling on promising contracts. Relationships are also due for an overhaul or even a revisit – and if you’ve misplaced that special magic, there may be something (or someone) waiting for you in the cosmic lost and found.

Soulful, sensitive fish, you’re a mixed bag of emotions at the best of times, but more so now. Mars locks his firing co-ordinates on Saturn – with you copping all the flack. But it’s not all bad. Encouraged by inspirational Uranus, the artists and wordsmiths among you come into their own. You’ve always known you’re a creative genius, so go prove it.

Life looks good, very good. New doors open, and you’re cosmically steered towards a more lucrative direction. But even if you miss this month’s early wave of confidence, you can still hitch a ride on late January’s rush of power. Soon after, you’ll need little coaxing to do what you love best – spending money and having fun.

When four major planets move settle in your career sector, you’re pretty headed much sky-bound in your chosen field. At the very least, the cosmos is propelling you in the right direction. You’re far more ambitious than usual. Sure, there’s drastic deadlines to meet. Just don’t forget to make some time for play. You deserve it.

21 MAY – 21 JUNE

22 JUNE – 22 JULY

23 JULY – 22 AUGUST

23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER

Wave goodbye to the mundane and welcome a risk-taking month. Best news? Romantic fantasies just might override reality. One warning: if you’re happily coupled and want to stay that way, latch the windows and bolt the doors until this month’s temptations blow over. Summer hormones are all fired up, and running hot.

Jupiter rests up for much of the month, and seems keen on keeping you in its relaxed company. So here’s a period for catching up on things that aren’t all that important. In the meantime, if you’re wondering what could make life happier – think love and friendship. You’re saying all the right things and others are listening. A great time for announcements.

Sometimes, when faced with the prospect of success – there’s a sense of dread rather than anticipation. Push ahead. You’re ready and able to cope with the most daunting pressures. But life’s not all slog. Late January grants permission for fun. And it would have to be a very diligent Leo who ignores this cosmic invite to play.

Just when you’re anticipating drama from one direction, it’ll come from another. What happens next depends solely on your reactions – but do think twice before laying the blame on others. Late January finds you restructuring your life. This, in turn, releases hidden passions that you thought had passed you by. Delightfully, not so.

Libra

Scorpio

Sagittarius

23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER

23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER

22 NOVEMBER - 21 DECEMBER

With the Sun settling in your domestic sector, familiarity breeds contentment. Should guests flood through your door, all the better. This theme continues into early October, though more actively. You enjoy fresh starts, so you either expand your living quarters or discard some of life’s accumulated and unnecessary deadwood. Fun, either way.

Mars racing through your love sector this month leaves little room for nonsense, and less time for patience. Let’s face it. You’re in an audacious mood. Some might call your attitude aggressive – you just say you’re being assertive. Either way, very few are brave enough to put up too much of an argument. Just don’t say or do things you later regret.

January’s promises a happy start to the year: get ready for love, better work or more money. This is what happens when the Sun shakes up your money sector, and Venus promotes romance. Even if there’s a conflict of interest between business and pleasure, simply follow your instincts. They’re pretty dependable these days, as are your friends.

our island home Maggie sure has won her fair share of hearts. Only 20 minutes from Townsville by ferry, the tropical slice of paradise we know as Magnetic Island has cast a spell over these long-time worshippers. WORDS KYLIE DAVIS PHOTOGRAPHY MATTHEW GIANOULIS

16 DUO MAGAZINE JANUARY 2015 duomagazine.com.au

Mike & Loretta Butler Boulder Court, Nelly Bay Magnetic Island formed a beautiful backdrop as Mike and Loretta Butler fell in love while spending many weekends camping on its beautiful remote beaches. So in 1979 they made the love affair with Maggie official by buying a Nelly Bay block and owner-built their weekender just in time for their 1982 wedding. “We’ve come over nearly every weekend and holiday for the last 32 years, and hope to spend much more time here now that we are retired,” Mike says. “We just love our lush tropical garden, which was wild untamed scrub, spinifex and a few hoop pines when we bought the block. At last count we had some 65 varieties of palms that attract cockatoos, lorikeets and many other birds and butterflies.” “It’s lovely to think that all of the now fully mature Cocos Nucifera palms were grown from coconuts gathered and planted by us all those years ago.” Visitors regularly refer to the Butlers’ island home as a tree house. Constructed totally out of timber with blue and spotted gum outside then radiata pine inside, there’s not a panel of plasterboard anywhere. A family of eight rock wallabies reside in the Butlers’ backyard and greet them excitedly when they arrive home. When Mike and Loretta return the hellos and have settled in, they like to spend time bushwalking the island tracks, cycling, ocean kayaking and boating. A favourite spot is the Tom Thumb rock, high above the water tank in Picnic Bay with panoramic views over Picnic Bay and past West Point. This is where shipwrecked sailors used to light a rescue fire and sleep in the cave while waiting to be rescued. It’s a perfect spot to watch the sun setting in the late afternoon. “One never gets tired of being woken to the sound of kookaburra calls…or the constantly changing views…or the lovely warm ocean… or the good fishing…or celebrating a special occasion at our favourite restaurant Le Paradis,” Mike says. “It’s all like a dream and in total contrast to my ‘To sir with love’ upbringing in London.”

OUR PLACE

The Illidge Family Warboys Street, Nelly Bay Libby and Peter Illidge, their children Olivia (18) and Morgan and Fletcher (twins 14) often have ‘extras’ over for dinner, such as the boys’ mates Kord Mackie and Sebastian von Mellenthin. The family moved to the island in 1994 from a remote island in Torres Strait (Port Lihou Island) so Libby could take up her job at AIMS. “At first we lived in Belgian Gardens in a lovely Queenslander, but we didn’t like the hustle and bustle of Townsville,” Libby says. “I guess we were in culture shock – grocery shopping was confronting (I mean, how many different types of orange juice are there?) – all that choice! After just six months in town, we headed for Magnetic Island, which offered the best of both worlds – an island lifestyle with all the modcons and everything a city has to offer only a 20-minute ferry ride away.” One of the things the family enjoys most about the island is the wildlife. “The natural environment really is unique here – especially due to the dry tropics setting,” Libby says. “Do you know we even have endemic plants and at least one animal (Sadlier’s Dwarf Skink) here? That means they occur here and nowhere else. Amazing.” The top of the saddle that runs between Nelly Bay and Horseshoe Bay is Libby’s favourite spot on the island, which she says is spectacular in every season. The kids would say it’s their many ‘bases’ in the nooks and crevices of various bays and headlands for endless rock-hopping. “Perhaps one of the things I’ve valued most about the island is the safety and security,” Libby says. “My kids have enjoyed much more freedom here than I would’ve given them in a city and that’s a great setting for growing up with opportunities to develop self-reliance and responsibility.”

OUR PLACE

Vonnie van Bemmel Appian Way, Arcadia Hailing from Holland, and later Melbourne, Vonnie van Bemmel was in search of a warmer place to reside when she discovered Magnetic Island. “I remember the feeling I had when I first saw the island. I spread my arms wide and said ‘Wow, this place is magic’,” Vonnie says. It wasn’t long before Vonnie decided to purchase a property and set up a small restaurant in Arcadia. “Loving nature as I do, the island provided me with an abundance of wildlife and National Park,” Vonnie says. “These qualities, along with the friendly village-like atmosphere of Arcadia, made it feel like I had finally found a place to call home.” Over the past 23 years Vonnie has come to know the families of curlews, frogs, possums and geckos who also call the island home. She’s watched trees grow to full height and even seen a granite boulder or two fall from its perch. “I’ve seen people come and go, and babies born who now have children of their own, but there’s one thing that never changes on Magnetic Island…” she says. “The overwhelming feeling of wonder and delight each time I venture out of my home and experience the views, friendly hellos and superb beaches.” Being an artist, Vonnie seeks out new angles and subjects to paint, so is always discovering new island enclaves that all have their charm. She particularly enjoys sitting on the big flat rock overlooking Geoffrey Bay (where she first set foot on the island 23 years ago), feeding the fish and watching the sea eagles and (in winter) the whales and (in summer) the dugongs. Picnic Bay Jetty is another favourite, especially in the moonlight. “Magnetic Island has crept inside my heart,” Vonnie says. “They say the island has healing properties and it certainly feels that way to me.”

The Jones Family Armand Way, Arcadia More than 40 years ago, grandma Jones bought a family holiday home on Magnetic Island and it’s become a tradition for the Jones clan to gather there every Easter. Now Lauren Hannay’s father, Robert Jones, and his brothers Glen and Lee maintain the property, which is a tropical getaway for whoever is in need of some time out from the hustle and bustle. Lauren, her husband Richard, and their daughters Lilly (8) and twins Sophie and Milla (5), make their escape to the island for school holidays. “We spend most of our time at Alma Bay,” Lauren says. “My eight-year-old is just so confident and happy in the water because she’s been coming here since she was a baby.” Lauren has even developed her own sun-safe kids’ clothing line that includes long-sleeve rashies, board shorts and stinger suits. “My kids are so fair – little redheads – and I couldn’t find good quality long sleeve shirts that weren’t causing drag when they tried to swim. So I made my own range!” The kids also love doing the fort walk because you can often spot a koala on the way and feeding rock wallabies at the end of Geoffrey Bay is another favourite pastime. The family also loves kicking back on the front deck of the house, where Lauren celebrated her 30th birthday party and where her sister’s post-wedding celebrations were held. Back in 1980, the 40-minute journey to Maggie was a real adventure on the wooden Hayles boats the Mandalay and Mingela. Today it’s a breeze on the SeaLink ferries that make the journey in half the time. “It’s a fabulous lifestyle,” Lauren says. “We’ve just done a big walk and been to the beach for an hour. Now we’ll watch a movie, have a nice rest and do it all again tomorrow.”

Lorna Hempstead The Esplanade, Nelly Bay Lorna moved to the island 21 years ago with her (now late) husband Martin Gibson. They loved the idea they could live right on the sea front, minus the traffic, and were overjoyed to discover the island’s incredible sense of community. “I’ve been associated with the Magnetic Island Community Development Association pretty much since moving here,” Lorna says. “Martin took on being Treasurer, and me, Secretary. I think I’ve now been president for about 15 years – and no-one wants to let me retire!” Lorna enjoys the fact there are no fences around her home, so wildlife is completely free to move unhindered. As the property is adjacent to the Habitat Reserve, there’s plenty of activity. There are only six houses in Lorna’s street and a gathering at one or their decks, or on the beach, for shared Friday night fish and chips is a long-standing institution. “We don’t live in each other’s pockets, but we certainly look out for each other and share,” Lorna says. “From the ‘proverbial cup of sugar’ to borrowing vehicles, sharing dump runs and garage sales, or babysitting (when there were babies) or now just a bit of dog minding.” Doing outdoor boot camp at dawn four mornings a week, means Lorna enjoys the sunrise from somewhere spectacular on most mornings. She says another favourite view is coming home on the ferry, watching Townsville recede and the Island come into increasing view. “There would not be a journey when I see that magnificent hill silhouette, when I don’t think just how fortunate I am to actually live here,” Lorna says.

The West Family Armand Way, Arcadia The West family – Adam, Rebecca and their children Aliyah (7), Nate (5) and Keira (5) – look forward to making the short trip to their Magnetic Island getaway once a month as well as every Easter and Christmas. The little ones love the ocean and are in nippers with the Arcadian Surf Lifesaving Club located in beautiful Alma Bay. “The house is adjacent Alma Bay, so we spend most of our time there swimming, rock climbing, snorkelling, paddle boarding and generally taking it easy,” Rebecca says. “The water is clear and calm and safe for kids.” During the wet season, the family takes advantage of some of the island’s lesser known freshwater swimming holes and, when the stronger south-easters kick in, they also squeeze in the occasional surf. “Maggie is truly a little piece of paradise,” Rebecca says. As soon as you step off the passenger ferry you’re on ‘island time’ and feel calmer, more relaxed and carefree. The vibe is laidback and very family orientated.” The island also holds a special place in Rebecca’s heart as Adam proposed to her on the beach at Lovers Bay. “Having a connection with Maggie is something very special,” Adam says. “An old family friend used to say ‘You don’t choose the Island…. it chooses you.’

SERVICE WITH A SMILE

WAYNE PETERS RECENTLY TOOK OVER AS FRANCHISEE OF JOYCE MAYNE ELECTRICS AND PROMISES TO DELIVER A GREAT SHOPPING EXPERIENCE.

TWELVE MONTHS AGO Wayne ‘Rex’ Peters moved from Toowoomba to Townsville to take over as Franchisee of Joyce Mayne Electrics – The Lakes. He brought with him a wealth of knowledge, customer service experience and enthusiasm. Not only has he been with Joyce Mayne for over five years, he has also worked in the retail industry for almost two decades. “I’ve worked in retail for a very long time,” Wayne says. “And I never get over it. I’m always meeting new people and I love seeing the smile on someone’s face when they have just purchased something they love.” But it’s not just Wayne’s experience and exceptional service that customers benefit from at Joyce Mayne, he also manages a team of experienced electrical customer service representatives who have detailed knowledge of the products they are selling.

“When you’re buying an electrical product there’s so much customers want to know,” Wayne explains. “Which is why I always get such great feedback about my team. On average, every sales employee has about eight years of industry experience and they know their products – you can’t beat that.” And customers also want competitive prices, which Wayne says is on offer at Joyce Mayne – The Lakes. He explains how the store is built on 1,400 square metres of land, which means they’re able to buy in bulk, at discounted prices, and pass these savings on to customers. It also means there’s plenty of parking available, making shopping easy and stress-free. “Joyce Mayne – The Lakes is renowned for its friendly customer service, great deals and easy accessibility,” Wayne says. “Customers always comment on how it is such a great place to shop, which is why, each month, on average 15,000 people choose us to purchase their products from.”

It’s always the perfect time to check out some of the most popular electrical products Wayne’s team has been selling. He says these are French door fridges, ultra high-definition and curved screen televisions, and the good ‘ole trusty vacuum cleaner. “The vacuum cleaner is something that is always in high demand, but it has come a long way over the years. People these days are after robotic vacuum cleaners – I guess anything that does the cleaning for you is going to sell like hot cakes!”

and it can be something tricky to master. I do believe some people just have a natural knack at combining colours and patterns together seamlessly. There’s definitely an art to it and you can learn what works through reading books and magazines. The Adore book has many tips on colour usage.

Loni, at the helm of a predominantly online publication, how did you find your first foray in producing a book? I found it really exciting actually. It’s totally different sending something to print, there’s obviously a lot more processes to go through and incredibly labourintensive, but having that finished product in your hands is very satisfying.

While many people shy away from styling and designing their home due to limited budgets, it seems your book is all about demystifying that belief and with the help of stunning imagery and bite size hints and tips, explains that great style can be achieved quite easily. Yes for sure. There’s always this common misconception that you need a lot of money to decorate your home beautifully. Sometimes the best homes are the thriftiest ones – because the owner will take more design risks and think outside the box. For example, Anna Caldwell, whose dining room features in the book, transformed an old wooden dining table with white paint to give it a new lease on life and found a set of white bamboo chairs online for free and restored them back to their former glory. The overall look was a relaxed interpretation of the very popular Hollywood Regency style, but without spending much.

Was it always in the grand plan or were you responding to your readers? I get a lot of people asking me if they can buy a printed copy of Adore Home Magazine and I guess I’ve always been fond of the idea of seeing the online pages come to life in printed form, however it wasn’t something I was planning initially when setting up my online magazine.

“THERE’S ALWAYS THIS COMMON MISCONCEPTION THAT YOU NEED A LOT OF MONEY TO DECORATE YOUR HOME BEAUTIFULLY. SOMETIMES THE BEST HOMES ARE THE THRIFTIEST ONES...” LONI PARKER

How did you make it happen? I crowdfunded through a website called Pozible to make it happen. It’s basically like fundraising, but for entrepreneurs/creatives needing the funding to set up their business idea. I put it out there to all of my loyal readers that I was raising funds to print a book and to my delight hundreds of people pre-ordered a copy or two of the book and that helped to raise the money I needed to send the book to print. Describe in your own words the objective of the book and its content – did you design it as a beautiful coffee table book or practical go-to for people that love design and creating gorgeous livings spaces? I wanted it to be a beautifully designed interiors book that people could display proudly on their coffee table. The gold foil cover has proved to be popular and I knew from the start, that I didn’t want to follow the stereotypical mould of having an interior image on the cover. As for the inside, it was important that it had lots of vibrant images. As a visual person I get more out of images than words. I also wanted lots of styling tips and colour theory facts as well as sharing decorating wisdom from a panel of homewowners, interior designers and stylists. The book breaks down why a room works and how to achieve that look. What sort of person do you think would love to own a copy of your book? I think the book really appeals to a broad crosssection because there are so many different styles of homes featured in there. In my opinion it’s the perfect book for someone who is unsure of their own decorating style and needs inspiration and ideas. Colourful spaces dominate the book and I think any lover of colour will appreciate it. As someone who is so adept at design, how important is it to know colour? Do you think it is an instinctual thing or something that can be learned? I think colour plays an important role in the home

As someone with their finger on the pulse of the latest trends, do you find your style and is always changing and evolving? Yes, definitely. The problem I have, is that I’m drawn to so many different decorating styles and can appreciate good design even if it’s not something I would do in my own home. My own home is constantly evolving and tends to be a mix of styles. I find it easy to update the look with a new throw, some cushions or a new piece of art. For some it is having time to reflect, for others it is indulging in quality, for you, what does the word luxury mean? Luxury for me is having a weekend where I don’t work (a rarity), fresh flowers in my home and a holiday to somewhere I’ve never visited before. What is it about other people’s style that you covet and admire? Is it their ability to source interesting décor and furnishings, create beautiful colour schemes or comfort and warmth? I’ve always been mesmerised by how people decorate their homes and infuse colour into their lives. As an avid colour lover (perhaps stemming from my graphic design background), I’m drawn to interiors that pop. Finally, do you have plans for a second book and if so, what would it be about? Yes definitely in the next year or two. I’ve just released the first printed edition of Adore Home Magazine in newsagents Australia-wide so that’s been keeping me busy lately.

INTERVIEW

10 YEARS OF SUCCESS

SHE HAS STYLED STARS INCLUDING DESTINY’S CHILD AND KELIS AND THIS YEAR ALICE MCCALL IS CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF HER SELF-TITLED FASHION LABEL. WWW.ALICEMCCALL.COM INTERVIEW NICOLE THOMSON-PRIDE

44 DUO MAGAZINE JANUARY 2015 duomagazine.com.au

INTERVIEW

“SUCCESS IS NEVER CONSTANT – YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO WORK HARD FOR IT.” ALICE MCCALL

This year you are celebrating 10 years of your self-titled fashion label, what has been your favourite memory of your first 10 years business? I don’t think I have a favourite memory – I always like to live in the present. So right now, celebrating 10 years and opening new stores is a highlight for me! How would you describe your label’s signature look? We’re definitely known for our quirky pieces with different prints each season and being very playful. But our look is also really growing up and evolving, with relaxed tailoring, sexy sheer pieces and some great monochrome styles. What is the inspiration behind your designs? My inspiration is constantly changing. I often look to what pieces I’m missing in my wardrobe and go from there. Great collage artists that I’ve worked with, vintage pieces and places I’ve travelled to really inspire me too. What are you loving most about your current collection? There’s so much in this current collection that [it] is hard to pick! But we have a great short sexy pleated moss playsuit that’s a definite standout. I think our structured skirts in prints and monochrome flatter every woman and as always we have some amazing prints for summer. In your earlier days you styled stars like Natalie Imbruglia, Kelis and Destiny’s Child, what did you most enjoy about styling celebrities? It’s a great way to have your work out and seen by so many people. It also taught me a lot about catering for people’s different personal styles, which helps a lot when designing. What was the very first piece you ever designed? When I was about six [years-old] I started designing and making little dresses for my dolls. In 2008 you debuted at New York Fashion Week, what was that experience like? That was a crazy and rewarding experience. Everything was just a bigger scale than here in Australia and really visible around the world. It was great to introduce the label to such a different market.

Fashion is a tough industry to make it in, when did you realise you were going to be successful? Success is never constant – you always have to work hard for it. But when we pick up amazing stockists, or have a big name in the label and then see a girl on the street wearing the brand…that’s when you think, wow it’s a success. Your pieces have been well received in Asia, why do you think your collections appeal so much to that market? I think the playfulness of our pieces are very much suited to Asia right now. Lots of the girls are sometimes more daring than here in Australia and like to wear some really bold and statement pieces. What should we expect next from the Alice McCall label? Well we’re constantly evolving and hope to open up even more boutiques here and even overseas in Asia soon! Of all the outfits in your wardrobe, which one is your absolute favourite? Again there are just so many pieces! Different outfits remind me of different experiences or nights out with friends, so I love the story behind when I wore it mostly! Besides designing fashion pieces, how else do you express your creativity? I feel that I express my creativity all the time – whether it’s at home doing activities with my kids or just putting an outfit together for dinner. What is your number one piece of fashion advice for summer? Don’t try and wear pieces just because they’re ‘on trend’. Embrace your personal style and wear pieces that make you feel sexy and confident. What advice would you give to people who want to pursue a career as a fashion designer? Don’t be afraid to put in the hard work. It’s a very challenging industry and nothing is ever given to you. You always need to evolve, whilst staying true to your aesthetic.

TIMELESS TREASURES

PEARLING PIONEER DR PATRICIA KAILIS USED HER KNOWLEDGE AND PASSION TO BUILD ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S MOST SUCCESSFUL SOUTH SEA PEARL JEWELLERY BRANDS.

FOR OVER THREE DECADES the Kailis name has been synonymous with Australian South Sea pearls, internationally recognised for their size and superior lustre. Kailis South Sea pearl jewellery has evolved to an elegant, sophisticated style, transcending fashion trends; the epitome of luxury.

Kailis ensures that the Australian South Sea pearl is at the heart of each jewellery design. Designs are luxurious yet versatile, appealing to the women of achievement who aspire to own Kailis. The woman of achievement is stylish and confident; her jewellery represents her successes and achievements.

Originally from Melbourne and a trained medical physician, Dr Patricia Kailis boarded a ship bound for Perth in 1957. It was there that she met her husband Michael George Kailis and they promptly sold their car in order to finance Michael’s first fishing business venture. Following Michael’s success in seafood trading, the couple and their four young children relocated to the remote north west of Australia in the 1970s where they began their ventures in pearl farming.

In October 2014, Kailis launched the Enlightenment Collection - Kailis first major collection release in almost 3 years. The Enlightenment Collection represents innovation in the design of fine pearl jewellery. Combining the natural beauty of Australian South Sea pearls with the centuries old art of Guilloché, each piece complements the wearer through light, colour and movement.

When disease spread through many of the pearl operators in the late 70s, threatening to destroy the oysters, Dr Kailis boarded a boat and ventured out to the pearl farms to investigate the cause. Her findings there prompted her to implement a more ordered and hygienic farming practice which ultimately lead to the survival of the oysters and the continued success of the West Australian pearling industry.

Guilloché is a rare, detailed and time consuming craftsmanship which combines delicate hand engraved patterns of geometric lines on precious metals with layers of hand painted translucent enamel. Some of the machinery used to create the collection are 100 years old, exceptionally preserved and rare antiques. Guilloché dates

Dr Kailis admits that when she and Michael started out in pearling they knew very little, but hard work and a shared passion for their work resulted in their business succeeding and they opened a small pearl store – Broome’s first specialty pearl jewellery store, Broome Pearls. After some time Broome Pearls evolved into Kailis Australian Pearls, the luxury pearl jewellery brand we know today. Each Kailis pearl takes two years to grow in the pristine waters off Australia’s north-west coast. The Pinctada Maxima oyster found in the South Sea are the largest pearl producing oysters in the world. Once harvested, each pearl is hand-selected by Kailis expertly trained pearl graders based on the perfect combination of lustre, colour, size and shape before being selected for each specific piece of jewellery.

ABOUT KARLA First year hairdressing apprentice Karla, finished school last year, so to start her full time apprenticeship she needed a funky and more mature image. Karla said the best feature of her makeover was the haircut - the textured but sharp cut enhances her features and gives her hair more body and movement.

HAIR BY TECHNIQUES HAIR | BEAUTY The style cut by Lisa was the latest technique to a textured bob with disconnected layers and removed triangle. We blow dried with Redken pillow proof primer, rootful and finished with powder grip and quick dry. Colour by Chloe was Redken nonammonia rich vibrant reds, which we took triangle sections on either side of the cut and scattered slices through the top. We applied a lighter vibrant red with darker richer red all over.

MAKE-UP BY BOHEME BEAUTY We used a Mineral Make-up base to give her a young dewy look and a smokey eye to give her a bit of an edge to go with her new hair, soft pink lips, bold brows and three quarter lashes to make her eyes pop!

RACHAEL VOGEL

I grew up in Maleny, on the beautiful Sunshine Coast Hinterland. I was raised on a dairy farm and I’m one of ten children (yes all to the same parents – people generally query this). I moved to Townsville from Brisbane with my family in 2013 in search of a much needed lifestyle change. Troy and I have been married for 10 years and have a beautiful daughter Tia who has just completed her primary schooling. I work for C&K (Crèche & Kindergarten Association) as a Business Operations Consultant, supporting educators in early childhood settings and engaging with children, families and the community.

MY BAG was a recent wedding

anniversary gift from my husband to replace my other treasured handbag that was stolen recently.

I LOVE DIRT I am a big advocate

for outdoor and nature based play. This book is full of practical ideas to engage children in nature.

OROTON SUNGLASSES a surprise gift from my husband to smooth over the fact that he had brought shares in a racehorse. I got the best part of this deal because the horse turned out to be a nag. ARISTOLOCHIA SEEDS I’m an

avid gardener and nature lover. I’ve planted Aristolochia vines along the front fence of my newly purchased Townsville house as they are the host plant of Cairns Birdwing butterflies.

MESSAGE CARD This message card is from my beloved sister Gloria.

HEAD MASSAGER This was gifted to my husband for father’s day from our daughter. But it works such wonders that I borrow it a lot and now refer to it as ‘my head massager’. SEMI PRECIOUS STONES One of the things on my bucket list is to go fossicking in the gem fields. I have this bag of stones on my bedside table to remind me of that goal. I just haven’t got there yet. May be next year? PANDORA CHARM This bunch of

grapes charm is a reminder of the two week honeymoon Troy and I spent in the Margaret River wine region in Western Australia.

PHOTO ALBUM from my best friend Mandy. It’s full of photographs from our fun times together including a girl’s day at the races, Mandy’s 2013 wedding and at a concert in 2011 on the Gold Coast.

CARD My amazing and humorous

11 year old daughter Tia gave me this for my birthday this year. Inside was written “Congratulations on being the youngest mum out of anyone in my grade. Wow only 32”.

HANDMADE NECKLACE

My daughter made me this as a gift when she was 8 years old to say ‘thank you’ for always being there for her. I wear it with absolute pride.

PAUA SHELL A gift from a child in my Kindergarten class when I was teaching back in 2007. He went on a family holiday to New Zealand and insisted mum buy a present to take back to Kindy to give to Miss Rachael. I was touched by his thoughtfulness. STAMPS My sister and I still keep in contact via letter writing. I find something magical about receiving a letter that’s not a bill. PHOTOGRAPH of my daughter

Tia at the Art Gallery of New South Wales during a family holiday to Sydney. This holiday was Tia’s first time on a plane.

BRACELET When I was about 9 or 10 years old I lost a baby tooth. I did the usual thing and put it under my pillow for the Tooth Fairy. When I woke I found this bracelet under my pillow instead of money. This was my first piece of jewellery as a child. BOOK OF POEMS TO MAKE YOU SMILE I found this

book of poems in a thrift shop and had to have it. My favourite poem is “To people I hear talking loudly on their cell phones”.

MOONSTONE EARRINGS

from my late grandmother for my 18th birthday. Granny said she was an astronaut in her former life and found them on a trip to the moon hence the name moonstone.

FINDING A WEIGHT THEY’RE COMFORTABLE AT HAS BEEN A CHALLENGE FOR MUM, JENNY GREEN AND DAUGHTER, CAITLYN WILMEN BUT TOGETHER THEY’VE REACHED A HAPPY EQUILIBRIUM.

AFTER A BATTLE with bulimia in her late teens/early twenties, and successfully getting help for that with two years of psychotherapy, Jenny Green’s weight ballooned. She tried Weight Watchers, shakes, a dietitian, low-carb and no-carb diets, soup diets… you name it, but still the weight wouldn’t budge.

issues, especially Type II diabetes,” Jenny says. “My knees used to ache terribly from carrying around all that excess weight. I now no longer have that pain. I’m also thrilled with Caitlyn’s transformation and the difference it’s made to her life, both physically and emotionally. I’m a very proud mother.”

“A friend of mine had gastric sleeve surgery and I saw the difference it made to her life,” Jenny says. “I went into surgery in September 2009 at 131kg, the heaviest I’d ever been. The first few days were very hard. I could only manage a tablespoon of liquid at any one time.”

While it’s been a tough journey, both women say they wouldn’t hesitate to take the same path. “Even though it was very hard at times, especially emotionally, I would definitely do it all over again,” Jenny says. “My cholesterol level is 2.4 and my blood pressure remains low as does my blood sugar. Even carrying the extra weight that I still do, I’m a very healthy 46-year-old woman according to my GP.

In the first week, Jenny lost 8kg and, within 14 months, had reached 89kg. Before the surgery she was struggling to get into size 22 clothes. She’s now a size 16 bottom and size 14 top. In January 2012, Jenny’s daughter Caitlyn had a sleeve gastrectomy and, like her mum, found the recovery tough but worth it.

“MY KNEES USED TO ACHE TERRIBLY FROM CARRYING AROUND ALL THAT EXCESS WEIGHT. I NOW NO LONGER HAVE THAT PAIN.” JENNY GREEN

WORDS KYLIE DAVIS PHOTOGRAPHY SB CREATIVE CO.

“For the first two weeks I was on liquids only. The following two weeks was puréed foods,” Caitlyn says. “I was then on a mainly protein diet with some vegetables and a fibre supplement. Gradually I was able to introduce most foods back into my diet.” Caitlyn joined a gym two months after surgery as she wanted to be proactive in improving her health and losing weight. “I became very focused on my fitness and would train every day,” Caitlyn says. “I lost a total of 45 kilos and now weigh anywhere between 78-81 kilos.” Caitlyn says her best friend Sarah and Mick from Second To None helped keep her spirits high as she underwent her weight loss transformation. “Sarah trained with me nearly every day and always pushed me beyond my limits. We had an amazing weight loss journey together and created a bond between us that I know will last a lifetime,” Caitlyn says. “Mick always knew exactly what to say and gave me the best advice to help keep me on track and motivated. I’m extremely lucky to have an amazing support network around me, which also includes my mum and my fiancé. Without them I wouldn’t be the person I am now.” For Jenny, ‘before’ photos of herself in a bra and shorts and not wanting to be an embarrassment to her children kept motivation high. “Even though my general health was good, I knew it was only a matter of time before I developed weight-related

“If you’ve always struggled with your weight then it’s definitely an option worth looking into. I know that in some other states it’s even done in the public hospitals and I don’t know why we don’t do that here in Queensland. It would save a fortune on obesity-related health issues.” Jenny warns, however, that the surgery is not an instant fix but rather a tool that has to be used wisely. “In the past three years I’ve regained about 7-8 kilos purely through poor food choices and minimal exercise,” she says. “After time your stomach can stretch significantly and you can eat more. I work with ladies who’ve had the surgery and, over the years, have returned to their pre-op weight. It’s especially important to keep up with the dietician appointments.” Caitlyn agrees that the surgery should not be thought of as a quick fix or a lifelong solution. “Use it as a second chance,” she says. “A chance to treat your body how it deserves to be treated. A chance to nourish your body with healthy nutritious foods, exercise and be happy with yourself. Don’t think that you can just fall back into old habits and eat badly and not exercise. The body adjusts to this change over time and it does become possible to gain weight again.” “Making the decision to have the surgery for the right reasons is also vital,” Caitlyn says. “Don’t change for others, change for yourself. My fiancé met me at my heaviest (118.6kgs) and tells me that I was as beautiful then as I am now. This decision for me was influenced by my health issues and my future potential to have children so, even though it seemed like a drastic choice, for me it was the best decision I’ve ever made and I stand by it wholeheartedly.”

GRANT COLLINS | AUDIOLOGIST | CLARITY HEARING SOLUTIONS

SOLVING THE ‘UNSOLVABLE’

Think nothing can be done to relieve your tinnitus or restore your hearing? You may be surprised to learn that there is hope for even the toughest of cases. Every day I feel inspired by the brilliance of engineers and research audiologists whose tireless research innovations allow us, the audiologists, to change the lives of millions of hearing-impaired people worldwide. Arguably one of the most inspirational hearing treatment devices is the cochlear implant. Prior to the cochlear implant many people born with a severe-to-profound hearing loss, or no hearing whatsoever, were generally left with little hope of ever hearing speech sounds clearly. Furthermore people who once had normal hearing but had acquired a severe-to-profound hearing loss, or who lost their hearing completely through means such as viral infections, severe industrial deafness, or genetic disorders also held little hope of being able to hear speech clearly again.

Ninety per cent of tinnitus is caused by the actual hearing loss itself, so treating the hearing loss should be a priority.

This is exactly what happened to one of my patients. My patient woke up one morning to find she had completely lost the hearing in one ear and half the hearing in the other ear. She went from having a busy work, family and social life to being completely incapacitated and unable to communicate effectively in almost all environments. Sadly, she had to quit work and avoided any situations where communication with people was required. Thankfully, she sought

treatment from me, and I was able to fit her better ear with a hearing aid, meaning she was able to function in quiet environments and communicate much more easily at home. However, she still could not communicate if more than one person spoke at a time or if someone was speaking to her from her deaf side. Furthermore, her dead ear now had constant tinnitus. Several months ago she was implanted with a cochlear implant in her dead ear, which restored useful hearing to that ear once again. She is now happily reporting understanding speech at around 60 per cent in the implanted dead ear and is now able to hear in many of the environments she could not before. Her tinnitus also subsided when she switched to the cochlear implant.

already spent thousands of dollars on tinnitus treatments, including a musical-based therapy called neuromonics, psychologists and naturopaths but nothing had worked. He was at the end of his tether, drinking two bottles of wine at night just to get to sleep. Amongst all this treatment no-one had actually tried to treat the hearing loss. Ninety per cent of tinnitus is caused by the actual hearing loss itself, so treating the hearing loss should be a priority. His tinnitus was at its loudest, and caused the most distress, at night when he was trying to sleep so traditional hearing aids were not an option as they can’t be worn to bed. Thankfully the Lyric implantable hearing aid had been released and we fitted these for him. Lyric is a semi-permanent hearing aid that is implanted and removed by an accredited audiologist every two months. It stays in the ear all the time so treats your hearing loss 24 hours a day. It is as close to normal hearing that you can get with a hearing device. Upon fitting the Lyrics my patient reported an immediate cessation of his tinnitus for the first time in years. He’s had no problems since and enjoys a tinnitus-free life 24 hours a day.

Another of my patients also suffered greatly from tinnitus for years following a sudden loss of hearing in both ears. Again, a virus attacked his inner ear and overnight he lost a portion of his hearing, which brought on the tinnitus that affected him greatly. HOW TO MAXIMISE YOUR WILLPOWER

We’ve all been there… Tapping your fingers anxiously while eyeing off the donuts at the weekly work meeting, failing to concentrate on the topic at hand. “One donut won’t hurt…”

Next minute, not only have you subtly slipped one donut down the hatch but three more somehow navigate their way into your gob! “Bad devil!” you say to yourself, as your willpower fails again and again throughout the day – and I think we get the picture! Don’t worry friends; what you suffer from is otherwise known as “Sucky Willpower” syndrome.

The more you effectively use your willpower, the stronger it becomes!

The latest research shows that willpower is “finite”, in that it depletes steadily over the day. Research also shows that willpower is somewhat like a muscle, and can be strengthened through effective use and recovery. On the flip-side, if you try to take on too many goals at once your willpower can be “over-trained” resulting in mental overload and none of your goals coming to fruition!

with small, process-oriented changes – such as “going to the gym 3 times a week” or “preparing all my meals for the week on Sundays”. Consistently do this for one month, and then start on the next task. 2. Get 7+ hours of sleep a night! Sleep plays a massive role in recharging the willpower battery. If you don’t get your sleep, don’t expect your willpower to be at full charge the next day! 3. Manage your stress effectively. Stress and anxiety slowly chip away at your willpower throughout the day leading to fast-food binges and wine drinking in the evening! Some tried and tested methods that can reduce stress and recharge the willpower battery include taking quick breaks from the computer, walking around the block on your lunch break and short stints of meditation daily.

What you need to do is use these clever tips to strengthen and maximise your willpower:

5. Tackle your major goals at the start of the day when your willpower is strongest. Many of my clients hit the gym or prep their meals for the day first thing in the morning. This is because they KNOW if things get messy during the work day, their willpower will be so drained that exercise or cooking is just not going to happen. 6. Be accountable for your goals; having a training buddy or Personal Trainer can ensure you have a backup willpower energy source so you get your butt to the gym! There you have it friends, use these tips wisely and hopefully you will find those elusive health goals becoming a reality. And remember – the more you effectively use your willpower, the stronger it becomes!

4. Regular exercise and healthy eating help your pre-frontal cortex (willpower centre of the brain) work as effectively as possible. Make this a priority, along with good sleep, to ensure your willpower is as strong as it can possibly be at the start of every day. Conversely, poor nutrition and exercise will WEAKEN your willpower.

1. When it comes to achieving your goals, don’t take on too many tasks at once. While it sounds fantastic to lose 10kg while quitting smoking and mastering the unicycle – this will most likely end up in all goals failing miserably. It is best to start

LEANNE SCOTT | CERTIFIED FITGENES PRACTITIONER | CORE NOURISHMENT

WELCOME TO YOUR JANUARY JUMPSTART!

I love a new year! Fresh starts, clean slates – it’s the one time of year we can say “OK! All is forgiven!!”

Let’s forget about those little holiday slips, the unhealthy habits that have snuck into our routine and start fresh! It’s a great time to have a quiet chat with ourselves and ask “What do I want this year? What do I want to change? What do I want to finally accomplish?” My question to you is – are you ready to grab your health by the throat and OWN IT? No more excuses, no more blaming work, hubby, family, life… are you ready to put YOU FIRST? We are so guilty of putting off our needs for someone or something else but few of us realise that the path to better health, better work, better families begins with us looking after us FIRST!

My question to you is – are you ready to grab your health by the throat and OWN IT?

So here’s my New Years project for you. Have a quiet chat with yourself and get totally selfish. In a perfect world what does your life look like? I’m a huge believer in positive thought and the power of the universe. You will be amazed what you can accomplish simply by putting your wishes out there – thinking like you’re already living it and just giving those thoughts priority.

Here are my top four January tips to making life happen: 1. Put your needs to the top of your to-do list every day – have you been meaning to get to the gym but something keeps coming up? Make it the first thing you do in your day. Get your partner on board if you need help with the kids. Have you heard of the ol’ saying ‘Happy Wife – Happy Life’? The positive effects that we pass on to others when we feel fantastic means that with a little team effort, the pay off will be worth it! 2. Plan and Strategise – overhaul the kitchen to support your needs and stock with the supplies necessary to keep you consistent. Swap for better meal choices, even better treats, so that when every day can’t go to plan and the wheels completely fall off – the quick foods you choose are not guilt loaded.

4. And finally, read this link from the Purpose Fairy – I think she says it all. www.purposefairy.com 15 Things You Should Give Up To Be Happy – Number 2: Give up your need for control. Be willing to give up your need to always control everything that happens to you and around you – situations, events, people, etc. Whether they are loved ones, coworkers, or just strangers you meet on the street – just allow them to be. Allow everything and everyone to be just as they are and you will see how much better that will make you feel. Happy New Year!

3. Own your life and your decisions – every decision, good or bad, is yours and yours alone to control. This life is so short. This age you’re at will never come back again – now is time to make the most of it.

LAURELYN HIGGINS | HYGIENIST | SMILE DENTAL

BABY BOOMER SMILES

As one of the baby boomer crowd that is ageing, Smile Dental’s Hygienist Laurelyn Higgins talks about some of the common dental concerns that face this generation.

Regular maintenance: your car or your mouth? The answer is both. But do you have your car serviced regularly but only go to the dentist when it hurts? Undiagnosed periodontal (gum) disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in older adults. If your gums bleed more than 3 days in a row when you clean, you probably have gum disease. Problems detected early are easier to fix and maintain. Regular check-ups which include screening for periodontal (gum) disease are the answer. Loud snoring: a red flag Can’t get any shut-eye? Your partner’s loud snoring can be a warning of sleep-disordered breathing. Oxygen levels drop and the sleeper awakens frequently in order to breathe. The teeth can also be damaged by the accompanied grinding and acid reflux at night. Some strategies to stop snoring include weight loss, sleeping on one’s side, wearing a dental appliance or mask, nasal strips and allergy maintenance. A simple sleep test, done in your own home, is the first step in the evaluation for a disorder.

Do you have your car serviced regularly but only go to the dentist when it hurts?

Implants rescue a generation I was the kid who had great big silver fillings put in her molar teeth in the ‘50s. Sound familiar? Later in life a tooth failed and had to be removed so an implant was placed. I just love it. Implants look, feel and function like real teeth. Unlike dentures, they’re attached directly to the jaw bone. So as long as you’re healthy with good jaw bone, you’re a candidate for implants. When to call your dentist Sometimes a tooth can be a little sensitive because of receding gums, usually treated with sensitive toothpaste. But a tooth that aches or is painful should not be ignored. It may be due to an infection, an injury, a crack in the tooth or perhaps a broken filling. Prompt treatment can save the tooth in most cases and may help prevent more expensive treatment down the road. Don’t ignore warning signs; call your dental practice about your concerns.

5 HABITS THAT LEAD TO HARMFUL PLAQUE There are more plaque germs in your mouth than people on planet Earth. Crikey! Bacterial plaque is the main cause of tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath. It’s the almost colourless, fuzzy stuff that sticks to your teeth like velcro if you: • Neglect your brushing and flossing • I ndulge your sweet tooth when you consume tea with sugar, soft drinks and juice • S nack frequently between meals on starchy foods such as biscuits and crackers •A void eating hard, crunchy foods that clean your teeth naturally •H ave a dry mouth from smoking, medications or a chronic mouth breathing habit For more tips and tricks visit www.smiledental.com.au or facebook.com/smiletownsville

Please share for the best care Ever wonder why we ask about changes in your medical history at your dental appointments? The answer is that it helps us give you the best possible risk assessment and dental treatment. Many medications have side effects such as dry mouth which is a huge risk for decay on exposed root surfaces. As well, the dentist may need to use a different anaesthetic or modify a treatment based on current medications. So keep us in the loop; please tell us of any changes in medications or conditions.

“WE’RE NOT VERY GOOD AT TELLING OUR STORIES, PARTICULARLY THOSE THAT ARE MORE PAINFUL AND MORE DIFFICULT TO SHARE. BUT I THINK SOMEBODY NEEDS TO STAND UP AND TELL OUR STORY.” WING COMMANDER SHARON BOWN

PROFILE

SERVING COUNTRY AND HUMANITY ON THE OUTSIDE, WING COMMANDER SHARON BOWN LOOKS POISED, COMPOSED AND CONFIDENT… AND SHE IS. BUT BENEATH THE POLISHED SURFACE THERE’S A FAR, FAR GRITTIER TALE. WORDS SOPHIE DILLON PHOTOGRAPHY SB CREATIVE CO.

LIKE SO MANY of our Australian military nurses, Wing Commander Sharon Bown has seen some challenging sights in her 15 years of service with the Royal Australian Air Force. Recently, at the Nurses: From Zululand to Afghanistan exhibition at the Townsville Museum of Tropical Queensland, she had the opportunity to share what too often remains silent. “We’re not very good at telling our stories, particularly those that are more painful and more difficult to share,” Sharon says. “But I think somebody needs to stand up and tell our story.” The story of “one of the darkest hours of my life” during Sharon’s service in 2008, Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan. “I will never forget the feel of that little boy’s chest under my hands as I levered my body up and down to pump his heart,” she discloses. “Nor will I forget the colour that drained from him when, after an hour of pumping and willing his heart to restart, we as a team decided that we could do no more to bring him back to us. We lost a child. A child who cried for someone or something in his mother tongue as we put him to sleep; cried to a room full of strangers who could not understand his pleas.” The young boy had been fatally wounded during a domestic shooting in his family’s home. Australian nurses are known to have first supported military operations in 1879 during the Zulu War. Now, 135 years later, in Afghanistan, Australian nurses continue to serve their country and humanity. While the military operations may differ in nature and the number of casualties may vary, there’s always one constant in war zones – the nursing officers. Sharon finished her nursing degree at the University of Tasmania and worked at Calvary Hospital for three years before joining the Air Force in 1999 as a direct-entry Nursing Officer. In February 2000, only 12 months after joining, she was deployed to East Timor.

She was “excited” although “a little surprised at going so soon” in her career because there were many nurses who’d been in for many years before her and had not been deployed. East Timor was a busy time for the Australian Defence Force and Sharon was a part of the first United Nations (UN) deployment, following the International Forces East Timor (INTERFET). During a second tour, in 2004, the tables were turned when Sharon needed to be evacuated alongside the patient she was there to treat. “We were based in Dili in Timor and were tasked to go and evacuate a local woman in obstructed labour, from a village called Same,” Sharon says. What should have been a standard aeromedical evacuation became a “stand-out day” when Sharon’s team encountered some bad weather and the aircraft crashed inside the village. In the end there was nothing that could be done to save the baby, but the woman survived. Sharon suffered severe injuries, breaking her back and jaw, but returned to work five weeks after the crash. “Every now and then something happens, I guess, in everyone’s career that grounds you and makes you realise the risks that you take – whether you’re a police officer or a fire fighter or a journalist in a foreign country,” Sharon says. “It doesn’t happen every day but it certainly makes you stop and think about your career choice when it does.” Sharon’s latest deployment was to Afghanistan where the little Afghani boy died on the operating table. “Going to a combat zone was new for me, as I was in command,” Sharon says. “My sense of responsibility was to my team, so I wasn’t so concerned about myself.”

“We were embedded in a Dutch Role 2 (Enhanced) Medical Treatment Facility in Tarin Kowt. The Dutch had established the facility and we were invited to work with them,” Sharon says. “Working in a combat surgical facility was the culmination of everything I’d ever learnt and experienced as a nurse. All of the skills and knowledge from my entire nursing career were put into practice in that setting.” Perhaps that defining moment was foreshadowed by the fact that Sharon’s mother was an aged-care nurse and her father was a policeman and army reservist. Sharon is currently on maternity leave, caring for her young family with her husband, also a member of the ADF and a veteran of the war in Afghanistan. She’s using this rare time off to study Psychology at James Cook University. “I’m studying psychology because of my interest in military and veteran’s health. Mental health is as much an important issue in the military as it is in the Australian community,” Sharon says. That’s why she was honoured to speak at occasions like this year’s Australian War Memorial Dawn Service and, most recently, the Townsville Museum of Tropical Queensland’s exhibition, Nurses: From Zululand to Afghanistan. The individual stories of our Australian military nurses are too numerous to be told in a single exhibition, but their collective story is too important to not be told.

Sharon’s team consisted of a general surgeon, orthopaedic surgeon, anaesthetist, ICU nurses, theatre nurses and advanced medical assistants.

AT DENTAL 206 we don’t just look after your oral health but, as healthcare professionals, we can help restore your skin and youthfulness as well as enhance your facial features. Although some facial improvement can be achieved from random facial injectables, it’s important to have a ‘global’ view of dento-facial aesthetics and look at the face as a whole when planning treatment. Rather than simply trying to restore individual imperfections in the face we take steps towards revitalising the entire face achieving optimal proportions for each patient. This way we can thoughtfully combat the ageing process. Each patient’s face is assessed individually through a process of ‘face mapping’ or measuring. Everything in nature is related to certain proportions called the ‘golden proportions’, mathematically known as ‘phi proportions’. These proportions are visible in nature, art, science, architecture and even Leonardo Da Vinci did drawings and studies on facial mapping. We therefore don’t try to give everybody the same lips or cheeks but examine each individual and, using sound mathematical principles to bring out the best in each patient, enhance the proportions of their face. The aim is to get as close as possible to our patient’s

ideal facial contours within the blueprint of their face. Facial measurements allow the treatment to not exceed the golden proportions or contours of the face so patients can rest assured they won’t end up looking weird or unnatural. Treatment may be targeted to address common issues like frown and forehead lines, crow’s feet and drooping mouth corners. `Improvements’ may include an eyebrow lift, chin or lip enhancements and advice regarding sun protection. Ageing, poor health and sun exposure cause dehydration and deterioration of the skin with associated loss of facial volume and dimension. We can help you restore the health of your skin. So why come to your dentist for these types of treatments? As a result of our university training we graduate with a thorough understanding of the facial structures and anatomy of the face and skin. Knowing where all the nerves, blood vessels and facial muscles are is crucial to not only good results but a reduction in potential complications.

endure painful procedures. Dr Kriek, at Dental 206, has been trained and certified by the Australian Academy of Dento-Facial Aesthetics (AADFA) in the modern approach to facial aesthetics and treatment. Getting back to your smile, the Dental 206 team use photographs and tooth measurements in a computer program to design the correct smile and smile line to balance your smile in proportion to your face. In simple cases the solution might be as easy as whitening or aesthetic enhancement with composite veneers (tooth bonding). More complicated solutions might need crowns, implants or orthodontics depending on the individual situation. All treatment options are discussed until our patients are comfortable and happy with their options.

Since taking up the position of practice manager for Bamford Medical in 2006, Charmaine Binnie completed a Business Degree at JCU and is now self-employed as the business manager for Bamford Medical and Rosslea Medical Centre. “Medicine is not always as simple as giving out a prescription, it’s about building relationships and working towards achieving the health goals of the patients,” says Charmaine, who works with dedicated doctors to improve the overall health and wellbeing of the patients. “As business manager I deal with running the practice and this is not possible without the support and care of the doctors, nurses and reception staff who are there for the patients not only for the routine visits but also during difficult or stressful times.” Bamford Medical also supports current and ex-servicemen and women and stands out as a major supporter of Will Keep Moving, a charity that works towards improving the lives of those with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). DMD is the most common muscle pathology of childhood. One in 3300 live born males in all races live with Duchenne. It’s caused by a mutation of a gene on the X chromosome, which provides the instruction for the production of the protein Dystrophin. This protein is located inside the muscle cell membrane. When it’s absent, the muscle cells collapse and die and Duchenne muscular dystrophy develops. Will Keep Moving was approached by the mother of a child with DMD to assist her in participating in the Tour Duchenne, a national event where participants cycle from Adelaide to Melbourne. Through the generosity of many people, including patients of Bamford Medical and Rosslea Medical Centre who purchased raffle tickets and local businesses who donated prizes, Will Keep Moving was able to donate $6000 to Tour Duchenne and another $4000 to Duchenne Foundation Australia. “I’m constantly amazed at the generosity and kindness of people. I hope Townsville never loses that as it’s what makes it such a wonderful place,” Charmaine says.

troy burgess OWNER + DIRECTOR | ACHIEVE EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGISTS

When Troy Burgess was younger and some of his family members were suffering from chronic diseases, there was nothing he could do but watch and wait. Now, after becoming an Accredited Exercise Physiologist he’s devoting his time and effort to helping others, no matter how difficult their condition. After Troy graduated from JCU in 2010, he worked at a local rehabilitation clinic before moving to Brisbane with his partner and working at Mission Australia, followed by a private exercise physiology rehabilitation clinic. “After advancing my knowledge and skills, I moved back to Townsville to start my own exercise physiology clinic at the end of 2011 as I knew there was a lack of this type of service in Townsville,” Troy says. “We now have three practices in Townsville and two in Brisbane.” Troy is the first point of contact for new clients and for following up clients’ progress. “I get to introduce clients to our services and what we do, and watch as they become relieved that they’re not the only ones with these conditions, then excited that there is help available,” Troy says. “I also treat the more challenging clients, using my experience and knowledge to help them address their mental blocks and keeping them motivated and engaged. I try to teach the clients as much as I can about their conditions so they understand that change takes time and we have a goal and we will get there!” One client that Troy has been working with for three years suffers from neurological pain and degeneration over his entire body. Every day, movement was a struggle. “In the beginning we could only manage 10-15 minute sessions focused on pain management and recovery was slow,” Troy says. “But with dedication and only a few minor setbacks the client is now walking his dogs, going out socialising more often and has a new lease on life.” At Achieve Exercise Physiologists, the team is dedicated to treating the individual not just the condition. “The real reward is watching someone progress though their program and become a happier and healthier person,” Troy says. “The health and fitness industry is so diverse that, in the same day, Troy can go from helping to reduce pain levels with a client to increasing strength in a marathon runner. “We don’t just treat those with chronic health conditions or needing rehabilitation, we also help the ‘healthy’ population to train for their goals or increase their strength and fitness,” Troy says. “There’s never one shoe that fits all. Everyone is different and that’s the exciting part of our job.”

After losing a lot of weight and getting into exercising at home and going for runs, Debbie Papageorge thought ‘Why not get paid for this?’ and so began her studies in health and fitness at Loftus TAFE back in 1995. Debbie’s prac was at Sutherland Leisure Centre and she ended up working there for the first 10 years of her career, doing programs at first then venturing into class instruction and personal training. “I started as a boxing instructor and had a black belt in Kenpo Karate when Les Mills Body Combat came to Sydney in 2000,” Debbie says. “I jumped at the chance to be an instructor in that format, then later on took on Body Attack, which is another Les Mills format.” Now working as a personal trainer at Strand Fitness North Shore, Debbie’s aim remains to help people enjoy exercise, but work hard and get results. “It’s good to exercise but it should be fun as well,” Debbie says. “I love seeing the changes people get from this industry. It’s not all about losing weight, it’s about being healthy, living longer, getting out there and feeling motivated in everyday life. I love the interaction with people and making them smile.” A good day for Debbie is when someone tells her they’ve been coming to every one of her classes and have lost 10 kilograms so far. “That is the best feeling, along with my daughter Dani, who is the Team Leader, Member Services at Strand Fitness North Shore following in her mother’s footsteps in the industry as a personal trainer and instructor too.” The Les Mills approach remains a major source of motivation for Debbie. “I get a lot of inspiration for my classes from the people who create the awesome programs from Les Mills,” she says. “They make it come together and deliver it to us in a motivating, inspiring and magic way, so I can teach it to inspire people in the same way.” Debbie says working at Strand Fitness North Shore is a delight as she and her colleagues at the gym are a team. “Everyone is always friendly, which creates a great atmosphere within the gym,” she says. “I look forward to going to work.” Strand Fitness North Ward 4772 0002 Strand Fitness North Shore 4721 1600 Email northshore@strandfitness.com.au www.strandfitness.com.au

A locally owned company that runs the Certificate III and IV in Fitness, the Fitness Institute qualifies students as a personal trainer and is co-located with Strand Fitness to allow for a true industry connection. Having worked at Ignatius Park College for 11 years with both IT Management and basketball coaching, Philip Sherriff had a solid background in both coaching and how the education sector runs to bring to the Fitness Institute, where he has increased the number of platforms the course is offered to. “My role is diverse,” says Philip, who also has four years experience as a personal trainer at Strand Fitness and six years as a strength and conditioning coach including four seasons with the Townsville Fire. “Some days I’m working on marking and administration and the next I could be coaching Olympic Weightlifting to the students as well as coaching at Strand CrossFit. We teach our students what it will take to be successful in the fitness industry, which includes being able to market and sell your product and services, being competent in what you deliver and to never stop learning.” “We encourage our students to find what it is they enjoy in the fitness industry and to motivate their clients to achieve their goals. We have a very high employment rate off our courses and get great reviews from their new employers.” The Fitness Institute requires students to complete 100 practical hours before they are competent outside of course assessments, so this enables the students to volunteer with gyms around Townsville and, from this, many have found employment. After graduation, the Institute encourages students to also become certified in one or many types of group fitness classes to enhance their employability. Together co-owners Dean Bodle and Philip have expanded their business to take on students from all around Australia and the business is now expanding to allow for other gyms to teach the course they developed. “If you’re chasing a career change in any field, give it a shot and be sure to ask lots of questions to those who are already successful,” Philip encourages. “Our last three face-to-face courses were sell-outs and, of those who have completed the course, almost everyone has landed a job including many who are setting up their own small businesses.” “I’ve had fantastic support from John and Todd Alloway, who mentored me through my Level 1 and Level 2 Strength and Conditioning course, and Dean Bodle has taught me a lot about motivation and marketing,” Philip says. “I’m grateful also to our manager, Sandie Wilson, who never fails to impress me with her dedication, hard work and being equally talented in competition settings.”

raje manickam DENTISTRY STUDENT PRACTITIONER | JCU DENTAL

An interest in community service, chats with dental professionals and some time spent as a dental assistant convinced Raje Manickam that transitioning from studying commerce to dentistry was the right move. “I love how dentistry is technically challenging and allows me to use my hands to help others,” Raje says. “It’s art, science, engineering and architecture all rolled into one.” Currently in her fifth and final year of study, Raje is on placement at JCU Dental where she has her own patient base and creates treatment plans with guidance from fully qualified dentists. “In our final year of dentistry, we put what we’ve studied into practice and apply the theory to everyday situations,” Raje says. Having done humanitarian work within medical programs as either a dental assistant or student dentist, Raje is keen to return as a fully qualified dentist and continue her voluntary work. A highlight was being on board a YWAM medical ship and treating patients in Papua New Guinea. “If I can help a few people to smile and improve their quality of life then I will be happy,” Raje says. Raje would like to work with people, especially in third world countries, who have diseases, injuries and defects in the neck and head region. “I’m interested in oral and maxillofacial surgery and have learnt so much through placements with various oral surgeons,” Raje says. “An oral and maxillofacial surgeon has both a dental and medical degree. I look forward to learning more and seeing where the future takes me.” This year, Raje is excited about a trip to Sri Lanka in early 2015 for a one month overseas placement in oral pathology and surgery. “I’m keen to see things in real life that I’ve only seen in text books, conditions like cleft lip and palate surgery and oral cancers,” Raje says. “While these can be seen in Australia too, it’s far more common and worse in developing countries with their lack of adequate health care.”

Born in Brunei, Raje moved to Australia with her family when she was five years old. She and her family have been living in Townsville for the past eight years and Raje says she appreciates all the opportunities Townsville has afforded her. Besides her family, Raje cites her patients as motivating forces. “My patients have been an inspiration in my journey with their appreciation of everything that you do, no matter how small,” she says.

BE THE FIRST IN THE NEW YEAR I don’t make New Year’s resolutions. That is, if you don’t count the obvious “that’s the last time we use the credit card for Christmas” or the ever popular “next year we’ll get organised”. The big thing around this time of year is to see by how far you’ve overspent the budget and how long it’ll take to get it under control before the power bill, rates notice and car rego arrive in the mail.

WE ALL WANT TO GIVE OUR CHILDREN AND OUR FAMILY MORE THAN WE HAD. BUT, THE MONEY MUST COME FROM SOMEWHERE.

But what he was doing, in fact, was upgrading his game again and again – to the tune of $1,700!

In our family, it is the credit card which poses the greatest threat and surprises. What seemed like such an inconsequential action over 40 days ago has joined up with others to mount a coup on our savings and pay. Such was a day recently.

It’s hard for people to gets their heads around the quantum of funds, but I had a talk to my son about what had happened and why. Where the blame lay was not the point. The money is gone and we’ll never get it back. What I tried to convey was that, although all these things happened, we still have to pay for it. Sure, it was not really his mum’s fault and certainly not his sisters’ fault, but the money must come from somewhere. To say I love my son is to understate the case. He owned up to the error and understood the consequences of his actions.

The nature of play has changed a lot from when I was a boy. Then, if you were good boys, you had a football in winter and a cricket bat and ball for the summer. If you were really rich, you also had a tennis racquet, but never enough money for balls.

I often say that my son is already a better man than I am. Linda says that is a) not true, b) unfair on him and c) will be true next year. Andrew was upfront and honest. Far better to have the discussion out and open and dealt with than sit and stew over it for days.

Today, games are played on consoles. To do that, you can either buy the game at a shop or online. This is what we did recently. To our surprise we left our credit card open on the game site. Now, to a 12 year old, it may very well have looked like it was just a prompt to keep playing.

We all want to give our children and our family more than we had. But, the money must come from somewhere. I am glad that my 12 year old has learnt a valuable lesson at his age and not when he was over 40 like me. Happy bill paying everyone!!

HOW DO YOU GET INSPIRED TO MAKE CHANGE IN YOUR LIFE? IF YOU REALLY WANT SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO YESTERDAY THEN YOU NEED TO MAKE A DIFFERENT CHOICE.

New Years Eve rolls around and with it comes resolutions and setting goals (yet again) for another year. Most start with a bang then soon fizzle and fade. But what about lasting changes? How do you get the inspiration to make change in your life?

It’s safe, predictable and usually everyone else encourages

People struggle to make changes. It doesn’t matter if it is to be fitter, thinner, have more money in the bank, write a book, be organised, have more holidays or change jobs. It’s always hard. From my experience, what finally inspires people is usually a mixture of being fed up with where they are at, seeing others managing to do it, and then deciding that they are worthy of the effort required. Then there’s that last motivating or inspirational bit to push you there.

means making a different choice to what you would have

My favourite picture that helps push you just that bit further is what I call the ‘Y Diagram’. The Y shows you that when you get to the intersection (starting from the bottom) you can go left or right. This is when you’re trying to make a decision whether it’s to get out of bed early to exercise, what you put into your mouth, when you reach for your wallet etc. If you choose left – the top of the Y goes right back around to the bottom and you quickly find yourself at the intersection once more, like a loop. You decide to do the same thing as yesterday so you get yesterdays results. And unfortunately the loop keeps going.

angles. All paths will be better than yesterday. It’s unpre-

86 DUO MAGAZINE JANUARY 2015 duomagazine.com.au

you to do this one. So you keep getting the same outcome as yesterday, in fitness, weight, work, relationships, whatever. Sick of yesterdays results? You bet. Then you need to choose the right side-path of the Y. Choosing the right side done yesterday. Choose a different food; get out of bed and put on those running shoes; change what you are doing in a relationship; get off the computer; go to bed earlier. Whatever you are unhappy or frustrated with then make a different decision to what you normally would. What follows is change. You go to the right side and this does not loop back but instead shoots forward and can take many paths and dictable, risky and there may be some ‘what ifs?’ but you’ll end up saying “oh, I should have done this a long time ago”. If you are happy with yesterday and the result you got then don’t change anything. Just keep making the same choices and decisions and yesterday will simply be repeated. If you really want something different to yesterday, then you need to make a different choice when making a decision. And this will then inspire for your next decision. Have a great year making changes.

ARE WE MISSING THE INSPIRATION RIGHT IN FRONT OF US?

Throughout life we come across many people or groups of people who provide us with moments of inspiration. Sometimes though, our greatest inspiration is sitting right across the dining room table from us. Every year we see people in the media whose achievements are inspiring and admirable. However, an inspiration we can often miss, because we tend to take it for granted, is the relationship we have with our spouse. When we really think about it, this person has many inspirational and admirable traits and qualities that made us want to spend the rest of our lives with them. If we were to sit down and think about it or write down all the reasons we are with this person, we would realise that they do provide us with inspiration on a daily basis. In terms of my own life, I know that my husband is an inspiration to me on many different levels. My most obvious example of this occurred sixteen years ago. Back then my father was dying from cancer and my husband, who had only known me for five years at that stage, helped with the care of my father as if he were his own father, as well as supporting me at the same time. Anyone who has lost a loved one to cancer knows that this is not an easy task. I, of course, am not alone with such examples of inspiration. All of us have stories like this about the person we share our life with.

The way in which we navigate all of these areas and maintain a healthy and loving relationship at the same time is truly inspiring.

The other part of our life that is full of inspiration is our relationship with this person. As mentioned in previous articles, our relationship has to develop and grow over and over and over again to accommodate the changes in each person and the challenges we all face together. The constant adapting that takes place during our lifetime together is truly inspirational. We should never underestimate this. This adapting requires time, patience, commitment and above all an honest awareness of ourselves and our spouse. Another aspect that is so important in this process is self-reflection. This is a hard one. It is not easy to look at a situation and honestly acknowledge the things we should have done differently and learn from these experiences. Added on top of all of this are the daily issues and challenges we are trying to hurdle, whether it be financial difficulties, a sick child or loss of employment. The way in which we navigate all of these areas and maintain a healthy and loving relationship at the same time is truly inspiring.

the wonderful marriages around us but also the other relationships that are so admirable, such as the brother who cares for his sister with a disability, the daughter who looks after her elderly parents, the parents who have supported their child through drug rehabilitation or the grandparents whose grandchildren are in their care. All inspirational, all admirable and often, all right in front of us. Sometimes it is easy to forget these examples of inspiration or simply not see them for the inspiration they are. We can so easily see the inspiration within a story on the news but fail to see the inspiration right in front us.

Finally, there are inspirational marriages and relationships all around us that we can aspire to be like. It is great to not only acknowledge

LIFE OR DEATH DECISION

BEFORE THEY’D EVEN CHOSEN A NAME FOR THEIR DAUGHTER, TANYA BAKER AND HER HUSBAND WERE FACED WITH THE MOST HEART-BREAKING DECISION A PARENT COULD EVER HAVE TO MAKE FOR THEIR CHILD. WHETHER THEY WOULD LIVE OR DIE.

THIS TIME ALMOST SEVEN YEARS AGO, Tanya Baker was eagerly awaiting the birth of her first child. Her daughter, Eden, was born on February 12, 2008. It was only after her birth that Eden was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, a rare and serious congenital heart condition.

“Since having Eden I’ve been blessed with two beautiful healthy boys. Beau is 5 and Nate is almost one. They are the reason I breathe,” Tanya says. “To have been given these amazing souls to love and guide and help shape the men they will become is truly one of life’s greatest gifts.”

“Our options were to fly straight from Townsville to Melbourne to begin a series of painful operations with no guarantee Eden would survive, or offer her compassionate care until we were ready to let her go,” Tanya says. “For us there was never a question as to what the right choice was for our daughter. We had five wonderful days with her before she chose to leave this world in the early hours of February 17, 2008.

Recently Tanya came up with the idea to combine a greeting card and children’s book to create the ‘Cardbook thing-ama-jig’ – a greeting card that goes on the bookshelf. Her new business, Butterflies For Eden Publishing, was born so that she could self-publish a range of Cardbooks that feature the absolutely gorgeous Canu Seenick (can-you-see-nick), who is a happy-go-lucky little critter here to celebrate the milestones and special occasions in the lives of the children in your life.

“We gave her what I believe is the most selfless gift a parent could ever give their precious child. The freedom to grow her angel wings. We chose to swap her lifetime of pain for our own.” As a tiny newborn baby Eden held the power to change Tanya’s life yet it has been up to Tanya to make that change a positive one. It has only been with a great amount of love and support that she and her husband have been able to accept what they were faced with and be able to share their story today. “The heart-breaking decision that changed my life has shaped the woman I am today,” Tanya says.

“I encourage anyone with a new idea or concept to start asking questions and get the ball rolling on making their dreams come true,” Tanya says. “When dreams come true, magic happens!” The Townsville Business Development Centre helped Tanya connect with many local businesses that supported her in realising her dream of one day becoming a published author. “The support I’ve been shown locally in both the product and character I’ve developed has kept me motivated on the days I didn’t think I could do what needed to be done,” she says.

“THE HEART-BREAKING DECISION THAT CHANGED MY LIFE HAS SHAPED THE WOMAN I AM TODAY.” TANYA BAKER

FUTURE PROOF: 2015 A BLUEPRINT FOR RIDING THE WAVES OF CHANGE AND DISRUPTION AHEAD Predicting the future is a perilous business. History is littered with predictions that were as confidently stated as they were profoundly inaccurate. Consider: Variety magazine’s prediction in 1995 that Rock n’ Roll would be dead by June that year. Economist Irving Fisher who in October 1929 proclaimed that ‘stock prices have reached a permanently high plateau’ – a prediction made just 3 days before the crash which sparked the Great Depression. Even Margaret Thatcher got it wrong when she lamented in 1969 that there was no way a woman could become Prime Minister of Great Britain in her lifetime. While predicting trends is fraught with danger, it is also incredibly powerful. Having spent 10 years helping businesses prepare for and navigate change, I have seen first-hand the power of keeping one eye firmly on the horizon – and the ‘Kodak moments’ that can occur when leaders fail to do so. As we stare down the barrel of a new year, here are 5 key trends that will shape the business world in 2015: 1. THE INTERNET OF EVERYTHING

While the notion of an Internet of Things is nothing new, it is becoming a reality at an astounding rate. With 10 billion devices currently connected to the Internet and this number set to increase five-fold by 2020, the Internet will no longer be something we log on to or actively access. Rather it will become a dynamic and unconscious link between everything we do, use, buy and wear. Indicative of how profound they expect this shift to be, Google recently purchased a company who are leaders in smart sensors called Nest for a staggering $3.2 billion. Consider some of the ways the Internet of Things is already changing life (and will continue to do so): • Oral B have developed Bluetooth-enabled toothbrushes which will give you and your dentist real-time updates on your brushing habits and teeth health via a smartphone app. • Diabetics will soon be able to purchase contact lenses that monitor their glucose levels • UK clothing manufacturer Smartlife has developed smart fabrics that detect a wearer’s pulse, blood pressure and breathing rates. They are even working on a beanie that monitors brain activity! • The Internet of Things represents massive ‘big’ data opportunities for increased customer engagement and enhanced user experience. Consider how IoT-powered

gamification has revolutionized the fitness world. Technologies like Strava, RunKeeper, ZombieRun and Fitocracy have allowed users to quantify their fitness and compare progress with others – all the while having their behaviour and activities monitored by product suppliers. Despite these ‘big’ data opportunities, consider how web-enabled devices such as our cars could render entire industries obsolete. For instance, driverless cars could mean we soon have little or no need for parking stations, taxis or even car insurance in it’s current form. After all, if you have an accident in a self-driving car, who is to blame and therefore who pays the excess? Although this trend may seem a long way off, it really isn’t. Three states in the US have passed laws allowing driverless cars on mainstream roads and many of the major automotive companies have already begun releasing models with driverless capabilities. 2. THE CERTAINTY OF UNCERTAINTY

While rapid change always means uncertainty, 2015 is likely to be more turbulent than any year since 2008. On the geopolitical front, Russia’s bullying of the Ukraine, the coalition offensive against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, and the growing spread of Ebola beyond North Africa each pose a threat to economic and political predictability. Added to this, a weakening Aussie dollar, volatile iron ore prices, likely interest rate rises, leverage caps on property borrowing and fragility in Europe could mean the economy is in for a bumpy 12 months. While such uncertainty can seem threatening to many businesses and leaders, turbulent times can actually be a gift if we navigate them well. As Andy Grove of Intel fame argues: “Bad companies are destroyed by crisis. Good companies survive them. Great companies are improved by them.” 3. THE RISE OF THE PHABLET

While this third trend may sound more like the title of a science fiction movie than a business disruption, 2015 will likely be the year that phablets become a market changer and category re-definer. Loosely defined as any smartphone with a screen larger 5-inches, phablets are, as their name suggests, a blend between a phone and a tablet. Global technology forecaster IDC predicts that phablets will outnumber tablet sales three to one within a few short years and that the days of the 3.5-inch or 4.0-inch phone screens

are gone. Naturally this shift will have massive implications for businesses as they look to ensure their online presence is optimized for these new screen sizes. The growth of phablets as an all-purpose device will also wreak havoc on technology providers whose business models have benefited from consumers wanting 3-tier hardware solutions: namely, smartphones, tablets and PCs/laptops. Indicative of how disruptive this trend could be to retailers and hardware providers, JB Hi Fi’s recent 7 per cent share price fall was largely attributed to sliding iPad sales.

4. THE REALITY OF VIRTUAL REALITY

Long been the stuff of dreams, virtual reality will take a significant step toward genuine reality in 2015. The company making the greatest inroads with this new technology, Oculus VR, was purchased by Facebook for $US2 billion in early 2014. The social media giant has big plans, to date, Oculus has focused largely on the gaming market with their Oculus Rift Development Kit retailing at $US350. According to Chris Dixon of venture capital firm and Oculus VR investor, Andreessen Horowitz, Oculus Rift virtual reality headsets for the general public could go on sale within a year. Dixon points to the myriad uses for the new technology in fields as diverse as military, police, and fire services. “Anything to do with training that is dangerous will utilise an Oculus experience” he believes. Beyond this, virtual reality technology could have wide-ranging and disruptive applications for real estate, tourism and even education. The possibilities are endless. 5. THE PRINTABLE WORLD

The final major trend that will shape 2015 is that of 3D printing. Again, while this technology is not new, it’s practicality and application are set to become mainstream in 2015. Consider some of the breakthroughs we have seen in the world of 3D printing in the past 12 months: • Cosmetics company Mink have developed printable makeup which will match a desired colour exactly • The newly released Lix 3D pen allows users to sketch in the air and create objects. • Property developers in China ‘printed’ 10 houses in 24 hours demonstrating the possibilities of 3D printers in large scale construction • Medical researchers at the University of Louisville have succeeded in printing human tissue for organs including the heart and kidneys. While 3D printing has been a fringe technology to date, this is about to change. Entry costs have decreased enormously (3D printers can now cost as little as $1000), while the range of materials that can be used to print has grown exponentially – now including aluminum, titanium, ceramic and a rubber-like material called PPM. From a business perspective, 3D printing will have immediate and wide-ranging impacts on manufacturing. One producer of hearing aids I recently spoke to shared that his company would produce 20 units per day by hand but can now print 70 simultaneously in six hours, around the clock. Current expectations are that 10% of consumer products will be 3D printed by 2025. While this may seem a way off, the trend is already beginning to take shape. As an indication, mobile phone giant Nokia recently released their CAD files enabling people to print their

own phone cases – entirely cutting out manufacturers, distributors and retailers and the process. This is definitely a sign of things to come. Bearing these disruptive headwinds in mind, what must brands and organisations do in order to stay relevant and ahead of the curve? Charles Darwin once observed “It is not the strongest that survive, nor the most intelligent, it is those who are most responsive to change.” HERE ARE 5 KEYS TO SURVIVING AND THRIVING AMIDST THE CHANGES AHEAD: 1. Re-Calibrate – While an appetite for change is critical to staying ahead of the curve, it is first important to discern which fundamentals in an organization should never change. Just as it is necessary to determine which walls are load-bearing when renovating a house, leaders must identify the non-negotiable values, principles and purpose which must never change. Tamper with these ‘load bearing’ fundamentals and everything may come crashing down. Before embarking on any change agenda this year, it is vital to first re-calibrate an organization with its core DNA and allow this to be a guidepost for strategy and a touchstone for decision-making. 2. Re-Fresh – Any gardener knows that regular pruning is necessary to maintain the health and vitality of a garden. In the same way, organizations require regular pruning of initiatives, traditions and even people who are inhibiting future growth. While pruning can be painful and even disruptive in the short term, it is nonetheless critically important. Consider how Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai has embarked on a series of necessary pruning initiatives recently. In the face of $6.4 billion loss for 2012 and a dramatic downgrade of Sony’s credit rating, Hirai recognized that he would need to act quickly to turn around his ailing tech-giant’s fortunes. His first step was to end Sony’s decade-long marriage with Swedish mobile phone company, Ericsson. Next, Hirai spun off any Sonyowned non-core companies, dramatically streamlined manufacturing processes and cut Sony’s global workforce by roughly 10,000 employees. 3. Re-Frame – We were all raised to believe the lie that great minds think alike. Nothing could be further from the truth! The greatest and most creative minds have always thought very differently from their peers and the prevailing wisdom of their era. Being able to view the world from a different frame of reference is in fact the key to innovation and invention. Leaders must pay particularly close attention to the views and perspectives of those who have fresh eyes in an organization – often owing to their lack of experience. Such fresh eyes have no trouble thinking outside the box and seeing creative alternatives to the status quo because they have no idea what the ‘box’ even looks like yet.

4. Re-Engineer – Keeping pace with change will require leaders and organizations to continually re-engineer their internal systems and processes. Too often, being ‘in a groove’ can easily turn into a ‘rut’ and simply repeating the habits that have worked in the past can set you on a collision course with inefficiency and irrelevance. Staying relevant will always require businesses and leaders to make internal changes before they are forced to do so by external forces. As Steve Jobs famously observed; If you are not willing to cannibalise your own business, someone else will do it for you. 5. Re-Position – As times and needs evolve, so must the positioning of businesses and brands. This could mean developing new products and services, tapping into new markets, or completely overhauling a brand’s messaging. Consider how an enduring brand like Lego has done this successfully over their 80-year history. Far from the days of simply manufacturing plastic blocks, Lego have been quick to embrace new technologies and approaches that have resulted in the brand remaining powerfully relevant. To their credit, this process of re-invention has never come at the cost of their core DNA. Lego are still a company committed to inspiring imagination and play but they have brilliantly re-invented the way they do this. As you look to navigate the changes that 2015 will undoubtedly hold, consider the lessons we can take from a surfer. Every experienced surfer knows that in order to catch the perfect wave, it is critical to keep one eye firmly on the horizon. While a wave is still forming a long way off in the distance, surfers know that this is the time to move – to paddle out and get in position. Move too late or not at all and you’ll simply get washed up as the wave crashes over you. In much the same way, winning the battle for relevance in the years to come will be about anticipating, preparing for and embracing change – no matter how uncomfortable or confronting it may be.

ONE STOP REAL ESTATE

PROPERTY MARKET LEADER, PETER WHEELER, AIMS TO PROVIDE CLIENTS ACCESS TO A COMPLETE RANGE OF REAL ESTATE SERVICES. OVER THE LAST TWO DECADES, Colliers International Townsville managing director Peter Wheeler has grown the agency to become North Queensland’s leading commercial and industrial real estate specialist. To achieve this, the company divested its residential sector to focus on its core strengths. Since then, most of North Queensland’s major commercial and industrial property deals have involved the Colliers International Townsville team. “Over the years, we also built up a residential property management business – Townsville Rentals – and it’s always been an aim to be able to offer the full range of residential options to clients,” says Peter. “Our recent purchase of Ferry Property realises that vision because not only do we now have a leading residential sales company but we also have the experience and skills of Richard Ferry and Angelo Castorina on our team. Richard will continue to work with his extensive clientele and Angelo will return to his passion of selling, particularly in the rural sector.” Within the new group, Ferry Property is now the dedicated residential sales arm that will not only continue to service the needs of its existing clientele but provide sales expertise for our managed owners. Townsville Rentals will continue to specialise and focus on all things property management related and our Accom Townsville business specialises in managing a diverse range of apartments for short-term accommodation requirements. “We can now offer every residential option to a client – buy or sell their property, rent and manage their property or find one for them to rent, or manage and lease short-term or holiday apartment accommodation. In a great city like Townsville, this is a wonderful mix,” says Peter. A leading residential property management firm, Townsville Rentals brings years of industry experience to the group along with an impressive client list. Accom Townsville, previously part of Ferry Property, specialises in managing and renting budget, executive and luxurious holiday apartments in the heart of Townsville. Their range of one, two and three bedroom apartments can be booked online, and management has extensive experience in the hospitality and hotel accommodation sector.

After moving staff into combined premises at 21-25 Sturt Street, the group now has around 40 people to provide residential as well as commercial and industrial property services. “Across the board, we can offer clients an agent with specialist knowledge of any areas of the property market they are interested in, who can focus on their needs and get them a good outcome. That’s what it’s all about.” In combining the Ferry Property residential management business Townsville Rentals, can offer a broad range of options for potential tenants while providing a stress-free management solution for property investors. “Experience is what counts in any business,” says Peter. “And we have experienced people in each division of the group who are able to focus on their core business, be it residential sales, investor property management or apartment accommodation management. Our people in each division can focus on their specialisation, delivering outstanding results to all our clients.” This business philosophy has underpinned the success of Colliers International Townsville, now recognised as North Queensland’s commercial and industrial real estate specialist. “Pulling out of residential sales and separating residential property management into Townsville Rentals allowed us to develop specialised expertise to deliver successful investment outcomes to clients both locally and nationally,” says Peter. “With our new Ferry Property residential sales division and Accom Townsville business, combined with Townsville Rentals, we now have an outstanding array of talent on board. Add the more than 60 years of combined property market experience that Richard Ferry and Angelo Castorina bring to the table and the future looks very bright for both the group and our clients.” Peter believes that the push for State and federal government economic stimulation for Townsville will lead to developments such as the Southbank Stadium and Entertainment Precinct that will anchor future growth for the city. “Investing in Townsville will continue to provide long-term benefits. The city’s productivity has been relatively stable over the last year, and the property market is expected to improve as local economic conditions strengthen.”

DARE TO BE DIFFERENT

Forget about the cliché of new beginnings this new year. Every single day is a brand new opportunity to do something new and exciting – something different.

In 2015, challenge yourself and your peers to be DIFFERENT in the best way possible.

In 2015 whether you own, are employed in or plan to open a business, every day when you wake up, you have the power to be DIFFERENT. Keep in mind – different doesn’t (always) mean weird, it doesn’t mean strange. Different can be doing something so well that it gets noticed. When you deliver your product or service – what is it that makes you stand out from the competition? Do you use the best ingredients, do you have the best staff, is your customer service exceptional? You need to know why your customers choose you. You need to know what your ‘Point of Difference’ is.

How do you determine your point of difference? Ask! Ask your clients, ask your employees. See what it is that they like that keeps them coming back to you. Check out the competition Be a mystery shopper, send along a friend or employee to experience how others operate. You might learn new tips or you might find you are miles ahead! Be the customer Ask yourself, if you were in the market for your product, why would you go to your business? This is often quite tough because we know what we think we provide, but is it actually what your customers experience?

What is a point of difference? A point of difference is a unique feature/s that makes your business stand out from the competition. It is the reason why your clients choose you above all the others. A point of difference can be something very small or very significant. It can be convenience, it can be quality, it can be marketing and it can be service. So just how do you know what your point of difference is? You might not have one yet! Or you might have one and not even realise it.

The challenge in this exercise, is that it is not always apparent to you what your point of difference is. You might WANT something to be your point of difference, but if your customers don’t notice it, then you need to step it up. That’s not to say your approach isn’t worthwhile! It means you need to do a little bit more homework and investigation to implement it.

Once you know (or have an idea) of what your point of difference/s are you need to workshop, develop and test them. Have trials and get feedback so if you need to, you can make adjustments. Finally, LEVERAGE your point of difference! Shout it from the rooftops! Let everyone know. There is no use in doing something if no one knows about it. In 2015, challenge yourself and your peers to be DIFFERENT in the best way possible. Become the business that your clients don’t even know who your competition is. Provide them value and a unique and distinguished customer experience. Provide them with the things that they didn’t even realise they needed until you showed them! Create ruthless loyalty. Have your clients become your salespeople through their glowing praise. And don’t just do it once, do it EVERY day. Every day is a new opportunity – dare to be different.

TAKING YOUR BUSINESS FORWARD

Times are tough. Almost everyone you speak to has some financial struggle they’re trying to overcome, but are you doing all you can to make your situation better?

Whether it be lack of money, too much debt or not enough customers walking through the door, it seems many people are currently having financial difficulties. The question is, can your situation be improved? Absolutely. Travelling to Asia certainly opened my eyes to their approach to work and business. It’s known that Asians work very hard, many seven days per week with minimal breaks. The interesting thing about this is that they appear to be quite happy about it. Those I encountered couldn’t be any more helpful and kind if they tried. They do what they have to do, and they stay positive while doing it. I took a lot of inspiration from that experience, believing we have a lot to learn from this culture, their work ethic and their positive outlook. In business, whether you are self-employed, or maintain a management role, it’s all up to you. So if you’re feeling negative toward certain business aspects, it’s highly likely things may not improve. This negativity can rub off onto your staff and your clients or customers and can then have a detrimental effect on your bottom line.

It could be time to change your approach, get motivated, and target the areas that need improvement.

It could be time to change your approach, get motivated, and target the areas that need improvement. But how do you determine what needs to be fixed? Where do you start? The first place you look is at your annual profit and loss statement. Your accountant should sit with you and go through this line by line and discuss each item with you. Start with your sales. Are you doing enough to promote sales? Do you have a niche in your business that you could expand? Are you spreading yourself too thinly across different areas, or can you expand on your products and services to diversify and increase your income? Consider whether you’re targeting the most appropriate market and if your advertising strategy is working.

It’s also important to take your HR system into account. Do you have any employees who you are carrying whom are not producing what they should be? Where else could you utilise their skills to increase their output and increase your income? Do you need to downsize? These are simple questions that you should address, particularly when business is quiet (often early in the year). Take some time to speak with your accountant, review your books and decide on a plan. You need a goal to work towards, and if that is a business overhaul, then the best place to start is to look is at your numbers… then get motivated, stay positive and work hard because that is the key to success.

How much are you paying in overheads? Where can you improve this and save? Is your rental expense too high? Can you negotiate this? Can you sublet some space? When was the last time you reviewed your insurances? Are you getting the most value for money?

PERSONAL WATERCRAFT, REIMAGINED THE QUADROFOIL IS AN ELECTRIC HYDROFOILING PERSONAL WATERCRAFT WHICH TAKES RECREATIONAL MARINE TRANSPORTATION TO A NEW LEVEL OF ECONOMICAL EFFICIENCY AND ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLINESS. Its custom developed electric outboard motor propulsion and special steering systems (with C-foil technology) enable the Quadrofoil to fly on water at up to 40 km/h (21 knots), cover a range of up to 100kms (54 nautical miles) and can be fully charged in under 2 hours. The buoyancy force on its four aluminium hydrofoils create enough lift to make it airborne at 12 km/h and raise the 3 metre, 100kg vessel out of the water so it can travel with minimum drag and extremely efficient battery usage. With operating costs of around $1.48 per hour and low maintenance the Quadrofoil is an extremely inexpensive personal watercraft solution that’s great fun as well being great for the environment. At around $28,000, the emissions-free Slovenianmade Quadrofoil Q2S Electric Limited Edition is like an airborne all-electric sports car complete with two faux-leather seats, touchscreen display,

steering-wheel-mounted acceleration and brake controls, a hollow fiberglass hull that the company claims is `unsinkable’, along with two life jackets and a collapsible paddle and safety whistle, in case you push the battery a little too long. There’s also a cheaper model, the Q2A Electric, priced at around $18,650, which has a slower top speed of 29 km/h and shorter battery range of 50kms that’s due in mid-2015. Both models provide an incredibly smooth and quiet ride on lakes, seas and marine protected areas. They’re not recommended for use in waves larger than 488mm but, as the minimum water depth required is only 1 metre, they’re ideal for rivers as well. A limited run of 100 boats is planned to ship in March but they’re available for preorder now. Reservation, production and delivery information can be found at www.quadrofoil.com

PAINTING FOR A CAUSE INSPIRED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE, LYNDA CAMERON IS HELPING BREAK DOWN BARRIERS, ONE ARTWORK AT A TIME. WORDS: ISIS SYMES PHOTOGRAPHY: SB CREATIVE CO.

A DREAMER, storyteller, idealist, mother, wife and teacher – this is how local artist Lynda Cameron describes herself in six words. “I also love art,” says Lynda. “I see art as a celebration of beauty, an opportunity to inspire hope and a chance to tell a story. Images can connect people, bring understanding and break down barriers. Like a doorway, they invite us to enter into another world.” So much is her belief that art can break down barriers, Lynda is using her own creative flair to make a difference and she’s doing this by supporting Volunteer Vanuatu. “Volunteer Vanuatu is a movement run by Amanda and Geoff Ogilvie, involving ethical tourism and practical assistance for village development in the South Pacific Islands of Vanuatu,” Lynda explains. “Our family has visited Vanuatu and enjoyed the love and beauty, but also witnessed the great needs of this developing country.” “Vanuatu is a close neighbour to Australia. The United Nations classifies it as one of the ‘Least Developed Nations’ with the overwhelming majority of locals living on less than $2 a day. Unemployment and child mortality are high due to lack of health education and sanitation.” “I want to support Geoff and Amanda in providing sustainable aid projects for community development in Vanuatu.” Born in Brisbane, Lynda moved to Townsville for a ‘couple of years’ which has now turned out to be 27 years. “Townsville’s slower pace of life, wonderful people and wide open spaces wheedled their way into my heart and I have considered it home for a very long time.”

108 DUO MAGAZINE JANUARY 2015 duomagazine.com.au

It was in this great city where Lynda and husband Ian met Geoff and Amanda Ogilvie and where their idea to support Vanuatu began. “The Ogilvie’s lived in Townsville for about eight years and the whole idea for supporting Vanuatu began here. At first they took teams of families over there for ‘Island Impact’ camps and over the three-week camp, they first taught cultural awareness and then took teams to do practical projects in villages. “Geoff and Amanda moved over there to live and founded Volunteer Vanuatu.” Lynda supports Volunteer Vanuatu through the sales of her art with a portion of proceeds being donated directly to the charity. “I have also given the rights to my images to Volunteer Vanuatu to use to promote the work that they do; whether that be on the Internet, in labelling or on brochures,” Lynda says. Some of Lynda’s artworks are currently on display at She Speaks art gallery on Bundock Street in Belgian Gardens. “Steve and Anne from She Speaks Art Gallery have been wonderfully supportive of myself and many other local artists. They hosted my very first art exhibition in October and have had some of my cards and prints on display since late 2013,” says Lynda.

You too can help Lynda on her mission to making positive change for Vanuatu and its people by purchasing her Vanuatu-inspired works. Some of Lynda’s creations can be viewed at www.volunteervanuatu.org/images-of-hope-artexhibition/ and www.pacifichopetrading.com

USHERING IN A NEW ERA IN CULTURAL SOPHISTICATION AS WE SAY GOODBYE to 2014 and our “oh so short” well-earned break over the festive season draws to a close, the time has come to contemplate what 2015 will bring for each of us. Will you maintain those New Years resolutions? You know the ones – be more active and healthy, spend more time with the family, work less and play more. Why not also seek out new inspiration, new experiences and new challenges. Throughout 2014 many of my friends and colleagues urged me to leave Townsville and move to Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne. They say – there is no culture in Townsville and the major metropolitan cities is where all the cultural offerings are. I beg to differ. Townsville is a cultural dynamo with over 600,000 people visiting our museums, galleries and theatres last year alone. Sure this may pale in comparison to Australia’s capital cities but when looking at all other regional cities in the country, Townsville leads the way. There is also one other major sticking point in my mind – lifestyle. With a tropical paradise like ours why would you want to live in a sprawling city like Brisbane or Sydney? As we welcome 2015 into our lives, we also usher in a new era of cultural opportunity for our region. This year Townsville will host some of the world’s finest cultural experiences that will inspire and challenge local, national and international visitors alike. From mid 2015 Townsville will transform into the North’s cultural powerhouse with unprecedented levels of events, exhibitions and festivals being held in the city. Commencing in May the internationally renowned, and New Zealand’s largest annual event, World of WearableArt

will travel to Perc Tucker Regional Gallery as Australia’s only venue to host this inaugural major international exhibition showcasing 25 years of the WOW permanent collection. June will see Pinnacles Gallery transformed as it presents Australia’s first ever exhibition that explores the exciting intersection between tattooing and contemporary art. Entitled A Permanent Mark: The Impact Of Tattoo Culture On Contemporary Art, this ground breaking exhibition is developed by Townsville and will draw artists working in this field from throughout the world. July will see the city come alive with curiosity as the Australian Festival of Chamber Music celebrates its 25th anniversary with over 30 spectacular concerts and special events. From 31 July to 8 August 2015, Townsville’s internationally recognised festival of great music and musicians will welcome the world to our doorstep. During this time Perc Tucker Regional Gallery will assemble 66 of the country’s leading artists in the first ever exhibition that explores indigenous and non-indigenous references of our post bi-centennial landscape. Entitled Country and Western: Landscape Re-Imagined 1988-2013 this project curated by Townsville would then travel to various galleries around Australia over a 2-year period. Strand Ephemera 2015 will launch at the end of July and promises to be the biggest and best yet attracting some of the finest artists from throughout our region, the country and overseas. October will see Townsville host Archibald Prize winning artist Ben Quilty’s acclaimed Australian War Memorial travelling exhibition Ben Quilty:

After Afghanistan at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery. In this exhibition Quilty has created large-scale portraits that focus on the intense physicality of soldiers serving in Afghanistan and the emotional and psychological consequences of service. And let’s not forget the other outstanding events and opportunities throughout the year such as The Queensland Music Festival, 2015 ANZAC Celebrations, Savannah Writers Festival, NQ Arts Awards, Dance North’s 30th Anniversary, Cultural Fest, and the many exhibitions at Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts, at our public galleries, Reef HQ and the Museum of Tropical Queensland. If you were looking for inspiration and an opportunity to immerse yourself into something new this year, then Townsville certainly ushers in a new era in cultural sophistication in 2015, and once again firmly positions itself as the regional leader in arts and culture in Australia.

MUCHOS NACHOS WF DF GF SF VEG Serves 3—4 Nachos are the ultimate chopping-board meal. Scatter chips in a basket, then decorate your board with small bowls of diced tomatoes and cucumber, Cashew Sour Cream and Creamy Avocado Dressing, ready for a free-for-all. 2 tomatoes, diced 1 cucumber, diced Cashew Sour Cream Creamy Avocado Dressing coriander (cilantro) sprigs, to serve Nachos chips 100g (1 cup) almond meal 1 large organic egg 1 teaspoon turmeric 1/4 teaspoon cumin 1/4 teaspoon coriander 1 teaspoon grated orange zest 1 teaspoon Celtic sea salt To make the chips, preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F/Gas 4). Place all the chip ingredients in a large bowl and mix with a wooden spoon to form a dough. Place the dough on a clean work surface between two pieces of baking paper. Roll the dough out until it is 2mm thick. Remove the top piece of baking paper and transfer the dough and bottom piece of baking paper to a baking tray. Using a sharp knife, deeply score the dough every 3cm, then do the same in the opposite direction so you form squares. Bake in the oven for 12 minutes. Allow to cool before breaking them apart. To assemble the nachos, place the Nachos chips on a chopping board, and top with the remaining ingredients. Any leftover chips will keep in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

RED ONION BHAJIS WITH MINTED RAITA WF GF SF VEG

Minted Raita

Makes 10—12

130g (1/2 cup) full-fat Greek yoghurt

Bring a little bit of Bollywood into your kitchen with these exotic vegetarian morsels. Bhajis are the Indian version of vegetable fritters, and are perfect as a colourful entrée or canapé at your next backyard soiree.

2 tablespoons chopped mint

To veganise: Replace the yoghurt with the Cashew Nut Yoghurt. 120g (1 cup) superfine besan (chickpea flour) 1/2 teaspoon gluten-free baking powder 1 teaspoon chilli flakes 2 teaspoons curry powder 1 teaspoon ground coriander 1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon turmeric 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2cm piece of ginger, finely chopped Celtic sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 red onion, finely chopped

1 small garlic clove, crushed To make the raita, mix all the ingredients together and place in a serving bowl. To make the bhajis, sift the besan and baking powder into a large bowl. Add the spices, garlic and ginger and season with salt and pepper. Add 150 ml (5 fl oz) of cold water to make a thick batter, then add the onion and stir until it is well coated. Heat the coconut oil in a heavy-based frying pan over medium heat. Add a tiny bit of mixture to test the oil temperature – if it bubbles, the oil is hot enough. Cooking several bhajis at a time, add a heaped tablespoon of mixture and shallow-fry until golden brown on each side; I like to form a tablespoon of the mixture into a patty before frying to help keep the shape. Transfer to a paper towel to soak up the excess oil and cook the remaining batter. Serve with the minted raita.

4 tablespoons extra virgin coconut oil or ghee, for frying

RAW BERRY AND CHOCOLATE TORTE WF DF GF VEG Makes 1 If you want to make friends, this tantalising torte is a sure-fire way to do it. Who could resist a rich, chocolatey dessert that is completely guilt-free? You and your new best friends will be bursting with bliss after just one bite. Base 175g (11/2 cups) raw walnuts zest of 1 lemon 1/2 cup dried berries 60ml (1/4 cup) melted extra virgin coconut oil 1 teaspoon stevia powder Filling

Place the cashews in a bowl, cover with filtered water and soak for 2 hours. Drain. To make the base, place the walnuts in a food processor and blend until they are finely chopped. Transfer to a bowl and add the lemon zest. Place the coconut oil and dried berries in the food processor and blend. Add to the walnut mixture and combine well. Press the mixture into a 20 cm (8 inch) springform cake tin and chill in the freezer for 30 minutes. To make the filling, place all the ingredients in the food processor and blend until smooth. Remove the base from the freezer and spoon the filling over the top. Chill for 2 hours in the fridge, or 1 hour in the freezer, until set. Scatter over the extra berries before serving. This will keep in an airtight container for up to 1 week in the fridge, or 2 weeks in the freezer.

155g (1 cup) raw, unsalted cashews 40g (1/3 cup) raw cacao powder 115g cacao butter, grated and melted 2 tablespoons rice malt syrup, or 1 teaspoon stevia powder 2 tablespoons additive-free coconut milk juice of 1 lemon 2 cups mixed berries, plus extra, for decorating (optional)

LAST WORD

KELLY NEVILLE IS THE RESIDENT DJ at Flinders Social and can boast a long list of musical achievements having studied at the Ministry of Sound under Silver Sneaker’s Wal Gedeon and supported acts like the Potbelleez, Helena, Katie Valentine and Vandalism. “Music has been my passion since I can remember. Even in school, instead of doing work, I would study lyrics to my favourite songs. I could even rap Bone Thugs-N-Harmony word for word.” Kelly says, ‘New and easily accessible technology makes it easier to become a DJ these days but most people underestimate the hard work it takes to produce unique and inspired music.”

Kellymixes it up

“DJing is so much more than just pressing play. It’s about telling a story. I love being able to be creative with my sets and watching the crowd’s reaction when you drop a song they love. It’s magical. It’s about sharing a love and passion for music,” Kelly says. Kelly moved back to Townsville this year after finishing her course in electronic music production at the SAE Creative Media Institute in Brisbane. She is currently in the early stages of producing her own original work. “If you want to be different than the other DJs on the market, then you have to produce your own music. It needs to be unique; otherwise you’re just another person with cool headphones and a stack of music,” Kelly says. “Producing is something that really gets me excited. One day I would love to produce music for a living. That would be my ultimate goal. I really couldn’t do anything else.”

IT SEEMS ANYONE WITH A PAIR OF DR. DRE HEADPHONES AND A MIXER CAN CALL THEMSELVES A DJ THESE DAYS, BUT LOCAL TALENT KELLY NEVILLE SAYS THE TRUTH IS IT TAKES SACRIFICE, PASSION AND HOURS AND HOURS OF PRACTICE. WORDS KATE RETZKI PHOTOGRAPHY SHAREE SPENCER TECK IX DESIGNS

“DJing brings out personalities in me that I never thought existed. One time a girl in the crowd came up to me and asked if I’d sign her chest…so I did. You just never know what the night will bring.” Kelly’s love affair with the mixer began in 2011 when she was lucky enough to be taught by Tom Piper – one of the biggest names in the electronic music industry. She then reached the finals of the Your Shot DJ competition, where she first made her mark. “I get my inspiration everywhere. I listen to everything from heavy metal to country. But when it comes to my sets I really like old-school hip hop, trap, house, deep house, tech house and electro.” You can catch Kelly playing exclusively at Flinders Social on the weekend and find her on YouTube and on www.facebook.com/KellyMissK/ info?tab=page_info
