to the Whitsunday’s - no longer Australia’s best kept real estate secret As locals, we know our markets follow similar patterns to Sydney and Melbourne, both in bouyant and negative times. If you have been watching the real estate market with a view to capitalise on the bottom of the market, there has never been a better time. Why? Two bedroom apartments, previously listed at at $1,150,000 are now selling from $650,000. Sales volumes have increased consecutively for the past 8 quarters and as the precursor to price growth, this is a good indicator of future property value. The final 10 apartments in The Boathouse are priced to sell this winter. Don’t miss out on this once in a lifetime investment opportunity.

WELCOME

LET’S GO (KITE) SURFIN’ NOW EVERYBODY’S LEARNING HOW In 2009 you may have seen the movie of a kite surfer who got lifted 150 feet while he was unhitched from his harness and crashed onto the beach? See it here http://youtu.be/mMZcwo9PMhg if you like. I saw this the day after I finished my Kite Surfing training. By training I mean three lessons at Pallarenda using a 10 metre kite that belonged to the instructor. Now 10 metres was his biggest kite and ideal for him but for my generous proportions I needed a 20 metre kite to fly or get me out of the water at least. Plus I needed a helmut, harness and board. All of which was on order. So I’d meet the very enthusiastic and thoroughly professional guy on the beach where we’d assemble the kite, get it airborne and I’d manage to put it in the ‘neutral position’. This was after a few horizontal flights across the sand when in a millisecond you had to decide either to hang on or let go. Holding on meant running awkwardly then smacking into the sand then letting go. I learnt that letting go was always better. Quite quickly (lesson two) I’d advanced to learning how to get the kite to lift off the water. This meant I had to lay face forward in the shallows and flick the strings to get the front edge of the kite to catch the wind. I was confident I wouldn’t be landing at Magnetic Island as this was only the 10 metre kite so I start flicking away. Next thing the wind catches and the kite is up! I’m being dragged through the water so fast salt water is shooting up my nose but the bigger problem is my board shorts are slipping off! This is where my training came in. Hang on or let go? I did both. Let go of the kite but hung onto my boardies. A few days later my 20 metre kite, helmut, board and harness arrived followed shortly after by my seeing the movie. You know (despite my wife’s reminders) I still have all my kite surfing gear in pristine (never been wet) condition. Look out for a bargain on eBay one of these years. Things (and people) I appreciate this month: Shane,Eric & the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery team, Aunty Jill (Singh), good friends, breakfast out with CWA, walking the Strand, will.i.am, Otto’s pies, Pon & Peerata, June mornings, Darryl Morrison, Perry Morrison and Sharron Parker, Sandra Teissl. HOROSCOPE

June

This month friendship wins over intimacy, but don’t assume that love has left you off the guest list. The pace of social events picks up, particularly around your birthday. The cosmos also fires up new business and financial ventures. If this results in increased authority, you won’t mind. When placed in charge, you’re very much in your element.

21 MAY – 21 JUNE

Cancer

Leo

Virgo

Libra

22 JUNE – 22 JULY

23 JULY – 22 AUGUST

23 AUGUST – 22 SEPTEMBER

23 SEPTEMBER – 22 OCTOBER

Deep cosmic waves shake the foundations of your life and open your future to previously unseen possibilities. The most surprising is the prominence you’re likely to achieve. It’s a month when you’re given every chance to succeed. Also likely: financial gains from inheritance, tax or insurance.

Look past the obvious this month. Problems or complaints hint at bigger issues that no one wants to discuss. While you’d rather not become involved, you may have no choice — mostly because others’ worries are not as trivial as initially seem. Or they’ve been downplaying problems, so as not to worry you.

You often produce your best results when working in a team effort. Of course, it takes the right combination of people to bring about success, and this is where some problems might arise. Stay patient for the moment and let everyone settle in. Don’t give up on others too soon.

You now gain a better understanding of life’s quirkier rules, and start to play the game more skilfully. You also become more comfortable with who you are, and your chosen lifestyle and outlook. Just don’t assume you know it all. After all, life is a constant journey — so stay open to new experiences and learning.

23 OCTOBER – 21 NOVEMBER

22 NOVEMBER – 21 DECEMBER

22 DECEMBER – 19 JANUARY

20 JANUARY – 18 FEBRUARY

Life should finally start to make more sense. Expect a time of thriving communications. June also stirs a hunger for fresh experience and knowledge so don’t be surprised if you find yourself involved in further education, or on a first name basis with your travel agent. You also discover how warmly you’re loved.

There could be a few moments in June when you feel like you’re on the wrong side of a frustrating battle. It may even feel like your usual support team has deserted you. Life can only get better, and month’s end should turn up some delightful surprises. Some new friends, perhaps? Romance, too.

One particular phase of your life comes to a close. Splintered relationships may start to disintegrate. So unless you’re in a partnership that’s rock solid, your discontent could extend to clandestine meetings. Singles too, may throw caution to the wind and enjoy a secret dalliance. Best to keep it that way.

June brings a more relaxed mood, so catch up on things that aren’t all that important. Short term projects seem more attractive now. The planets also stir up a hunger for fresh knowledge, so expect to spend more on reading material or a new course of study. Romance? Also high on the hit list.

Pisces

Aries

Taurus

19 FEBRUARY – 20 MARCH

21 MARCH – 20 APRIL

21 APRIL – 20 MAY

Right now, things are a little erratic, so making fixed plans might not be wise. You could also question your work/play ratio this month. If it’s all feeling unbalanced, you might see little point in putting in so much effort, which is why the cosmos encourages some time out. Travel perhaps? Or lose yourself in love.

June brings a dilemma. You can either suffer in silence, or speak out. Either way, don’t deliberately ‘dumb-down’ your intelligence. Despite every effort to please everyone, sometimes that’s just not possible. Financially, a project shelved last year again seems probable. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to check the finer details.

It may seem that there’s nothing more elusive than simple contentment. But perhaps your expectations are a tad high? At work, postpone new projects. At home, clear the air. Don’t worry too much if the generation gap starts to feel more like a chasm. Disputes can be resolved with an understanding and practical approach.

SLEEPING NEW YORK ISN’T THE ONLY CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS. WHILE YOU WERE FAST ASLEEP, THESE LOCAL NIGHTSHIFT WORKERS KEPT TOWNSVILLE TICKING OVER.

12:03:AM MICHAEL BLEMINGS MARINE ENGINEER Pacific Basin Towage

Night shifts are part and parcel of working in the maritime industry and marine engineer Michael Blemings says the job chose him 24 years ago when he was offered a part-time position on the tugs. “Wages and conditions are good and the people I work with are excellent,” Michael says. “That makes it all worthwhile when we’re waiting for a ship at 2am, it’s blowing 25 to 30 knots on Cleveland Bay and it’s cold with poor visibility and starting to drizzle rain…” Michael is part of an AMSA qualified three-man crew who operate one of three $12-million-dollar tug boats that assist ships berthing and sailing Townsville Port. Moving ships in and out of the port is a 24/7 operation that also involves TPA Ship Pilots, Lines Services and Port Authority staff. Late one evening, in unfavourable weather and after being dismissed by the Ship Pilot, Michael recalls returning to the tug berth when the crew got word the ship had lost steering. “We received an emergency call from the Pilot that the ship had run aground in Platypus Channel,” Michael says. “We spent the next four hours assisting the ship off the mud, back into the channel and then safely out to sea.” It’s a demanding job but Michael says: “If amazing sunrises over Cleveland Bay or sensational sunsets silhouetting Castle Hill are your thing, then shift work in the maritime industry could be for you.”

01:23:AM MICHELLE MORRIS

COOK/WAITRESS BP Townsville Truckstop, Cluden

Michelle Morris has been working the graveyard shift at the BP Townsville Truckstop for the past 18 months and, so far, she’s seen some interesting sights… “People often come in wearing their pyjamas since no-one cares what they look like in the middle of the night. Race days are always fun too – we get all sorts,” Michelle says. “I alternate shifts, working either 4pm till midnight or the graveyard shift, which is midnight till 8am. I don’t usually sleep between graveyard shifts because it’s easier to keep going.” Michelle’s partner Travis, who is a crane mechanic, works opposite shifts to Michelle so it pans out well with looking after their boys Bradley (9) and Ben (2). “We’re lucky we don’t need to put the kids in childcare. It’s one of the major benefits of working nights,” Michelle says. “I’ve always been a night person, and I used to work security, so I’m used to being up while most people are sleeping.” Light-heartedly describing her co-workers as “a weird bunch” Michelle admits there has been the odd food fight to pass the wee hours but assures “we always clean up afterwards”.

JULIE WADE

OWNER/OPERATOR Revolution Security

An armed guard who fixes ATMs throughout Townsville, Cardwell, Ingham, Ayr, Home Hill, Charters Towers and Bowen, Julie Wade is no stranger to working nights. “My most memorable night shift was seeing a couple of men entering a client’s yard under a fence when I was driving home at midnight,” Julie says. “Without thinking I took off after them on foot. Unfortunately they escaped over the back fence but at least I stopped them from breaking into the building. It’s times like these that get your adrenaline pumping. That’s what we get paid to do.” Julie says her friends and family are used to her strange hours and work around it but she says being on night

26 DUO MAGAZINE JUNE 2014 duomagazine.com.au

11:18:PM shifts can be hard on relationships. “A lot of partners, both male and female, find it difficult to accept the jobs we do. Many women become jealous because their husbands are working with female guards and it’s the same for female guards’ partners. “I know that my particular group of friends who are guards would do anything for me. Some partners just don’t understand this bond. However, lifelong friends have been made.” While working nights is sometimes scary, Julie says she loves her job and is happy in her chosen career. “I get to go home at the end of the night knowing I’ve done my best to keep people safe and happy,” Julie says. “I wouldn’t change that for the world.”

INTERVIEW

OWEN SMITHSON STREET SWEEPER Cleanaway

Street sweeper Owen Smithson has worked night shifts for so long that, when he’s on holidays, it takes a while for noon not to feel like midnight. “When I start work at night I see the last of the usual general public going home from work or dinner but, after midnight, it seems a different type of people surface,” Owen says. “It can be pretty amusing, especially around the nightclub areas on footy grand final days. Finishing work in the city each morning you come across the late party stragglers and quite a few of them are funny characters. I try to get the ones who’ve been overcome with the need to pass out a cab so they can get home safely.”

Other instances are more confronting and, in these scenarios, Owen is happy that the police look out for him. “The police are normally around through the night doing patrols and they keep an eye on me,” he says. “I’m very comfortable in the knowledge they know me and are close by.” Now that their children are grown, Owen says it can be hard on his wife spending most nights alone but they make up for lost time by having extended lunches. “One of my best mates works at the wharf at Gladstone and also does night shifts, so that makes catching up a bit easier too,” Owen says.

FRANCHISEE AND HEAD BAKER Bakers Delight Townsville

As Head Baker at Bakers Delight it’s Ashley Creighton’s responsibility to make sure production runs smoothly and that includes waking up for work at 11.30pm, when most of us are snugly tucked up in bed for a sound night’s sleep. “It’s always tough when the alarm goes off but when you have a good bunch of co-workers around you it makes it a lot easier,” Ashley says. “We have two bakers apart from myself and, to stay awake, we’ve been known to have a fair few dance-offs during the early hours. I have to say I can do a mean Michael Jackson moonwalk.” Working nights isn’t easy when you have a young family and Ashley says he’s lucky to have an understanding wife who picks up a lot of the slack looking after their children Phoebe (5) and Connor (2). “Maree is usually just going to bed when I’m getting out,” Ashley says. “I’m done by about 9am and usually have ‘dinner’ when I get home and watch a bit of TV before taking a nap. “I get up in the afternoon to pick Phoebe up from school and spend the afternoon with the kids before going back to bed early evening for a few hours.”

03:27:AM DR EMMA WAWN

EMERGENCY REGISTRAR Townsville Hospital Open 24 hours, seven days a week, the Townsville Hospital’s Emergency Department is entirely dependent on shift workers like Dr Emma Wawn. Dr Wawn has been a doctor for five years and a shift worker for the majority of that time. “As for body clock – if mine were a watch you’d return it,” laughs Dr Wawn. “After your first two night shifts you start to get in a bit of a routine, but mostly I find myself eating breakfast at any time of the day or night and an after-work drink may be at 9am.” The most memorable night shift Dr Wawn’s ever worked was New Year’s Eve/Day in Canberra in 2012. “There were four dislocated shoulders (dancing with a Wii is dangerous), two poisonings and a drug overdose in amongst the usual cases,” she says. “The highlight of the night, though, was when the ambulance officers brought me a coffee!” While working nights is exhausting, Dr Wawn says it’s also rewarding. “The camaraderie with your colleagues on night shift is awesome,” she says. “For most people, I think what we do is a mystery and fascination. Sometimes it’s routine, other times it can be hectic, sometimes fun and sometimes heart-breaking. But mostly night shift work just means we are people best avoided the following day!”

BUYERS SNAP UP NEW WATERFRONT SUBDIVISION

PORT OF AIRLIE Sales Manager Andrew Forster said the rarity of these lots – within an exclusive, secure, gated community and alongside a marina – should not be underestimated. “It is estimated that there is approximately 120 lots with direct water frontage available on the North Queensland coastline between Mackay and Port Douglas,” Mr Forster explained. “The Cove will be the only location offering 94-year leases on marina berths right on land owners’ doorsteps.” “While people recognise the Whitsundays as an aquatic paradise, the simple fact is there is a scarcity of waterfront property in the area. It’s a fact that people don’t believe or understand when flying in to the area across such a vast and exquisite coastline,” Mr Forster said. “The Cove’s 23 lots provide rare opportunities to buy this type of land which has not already been built on or developed and is right on the doorstep of a state-of-the-art transit hub and secure marina for owners’ boats. For this reason, The Cove represents a fantastic opportunity in terms of both growth and lifestyle in a market where vacant waterfront land opportunities are few and far between.

PORT OF AIRLIE’S ABSOLUTE WATERFRONT SUBDIVISION, THE COVE, HAS PROVED TO BE VERY HOT PROPERTY WITH SEVEN LOTS SNAPPED UP IN A RECENT PRE-RELEASE.

“With only 16 lots remaining, it will be very important for potential buyers to have their names registered with Port of Airlie prior to the main release, which will be announced soon.” Airlie Beach-based civil engineering contractors Allciv are undertaking the construction of The Cove, which is due for completion in coming weeks. Allciv Director Brett Thiele said he was excited to be working on such an exclusive and unrivalled local project. “We are extremely proud to be part of the Port of Airlie team, and to have the opportunity to assist in shaping this premier waterfront marina development,” he said. Doing 16 training sessions each week might not be at the top of everyone’s wish list. Add to that the occasional 5km park run and a spot of bike riding and you start to get a picture of the lifestyle of North Shore resident Lyndsey Goriss.

“I run 16 sessions a week and most of them are in the park near our home or at St Clare’s Catholic School. It’s so convenient – I just take a few steps outside and I’m at work!

Luckily for Lyndsey, and her husband and fellow personal trainer Brent, North Shore has 330 hectares of open space and 42 kilometres of walkways and bike trails.

Lyndsey, Brett and their 5-year-old daughter Willow, were among the first residents of Stockland’s North Shore community. The couple settled on a block of land overlooking a park and in a twist of fate Lyndsey soon began a TAFE personal training course and then established her own business.

GET PLANKING Core strength training has never been more popular, and the ever-easy and effective plank is making a comeback as a go-to exercise for any training routine. Planks increase core strength and spinal stabilisation while maintaining a neutral spine, eliminating the flexing and extending of the spinal column. They also target multiple muscles at one time, taking the simple ‘hold’ style exercise to a new level. Additional benefits include improved posture and balance.

DON’T LET WINTER WIN

North Queensland may not feel the true chill of winter but with later sunrises and early sunsets, regular exercise routines can fall to the wayside. Reasons to maintain fitness during the cooler months? Getting outside in the sunshine causes your brain to increase its serotonin (a hormone connected with feelings of happiness and wakefulness) production. When the ultraviolet rays from sunshine touch your skin, your body produces vitamin D, which helps you maintain serotonin levels. Vitamin D is important for bone strength, absorbing calcium and a healthy immune system. So don’t hibernate this winter, get outside and exercise to maintain fitness, fight sickness and stay happy. Spring is never that far away here in NQ!

Packed with Vitamin A and C, and fibre, mandarins have also been found to act as a support against liver cell damage.

AUSSIES GO RED TO FIGHT WOMENS’ HEART DISEASE THIS JUNE THE HEART FOUNDATION IS CALLING ON AUSTRALIANS TO GO RED FOR WOMEN (WWW.GOREDFORWOMEN.ORG.AU) AND SPREAD THE VITAL MESSAGE WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY ABOUT HEART DISEASE, THE SINGLE BIGGEST KILLER OF AUSTRALIAN WOMEN1.

42 DUO MAGAZINE JUNE 2014 duomagazine.com.au

H E A LT H + F I T N E S S

THE HEART FOUNDATION’S National CEO Mary Barry said in Australia, many women are surprised to know that more than three times as many women die from heart disease than breast cancer, with the disease claiming 25 lives per day1. “While we are making great progress with women and their awareness of heart disease, there is still quite a way to go in addressing the single biggest killer of women in Australia,” Ms Barry said. “We are urging all women, especially those aged over 45, to ask their doctor for a heart health check this month. “Concerningly, many women are still unaware that high cholesterol and blood pressure are the key risk factors, with lifestyle choices including poor diet and lack of exercise the focus for most women when questioned about how to reduce their risk of the disease,” said Ms Barry. Currently one in three adult women have high cholesterol, with 90% not aware of their condition3. Data on blood pressure shows that one in four women aged 35 and over have high blood pressure, with two in three not aware 3. “Knowing your risk is the first step to stopping heart disease and taking the necessary steps to protect your heart,” said Ms Barry. “Determining your risk is as simple as booking in an appointment with your GP and asking for a heart health check. It involves a blood pressure and cholesterol tests as well as a discussion about other risk factors like family history, smoking, physical activity and diet.”

Once the all-important heart health check has been ticked off the list, people are encouraged to get involved with the Go Red for Women campaign and have a red-hot time raising money for heart disease by dressing, eating and partying… red! “There are lots of ways to ‘go red’ – the office can ‘go red’ by hosting a morning tea or red themed dress day, schools can ‘go red’ by hosting a rockin’ red disco or you could even host a dinner party at home,” she added “This June we are asking people to Go Red to help fight womens’ heart disease. Raising even $100 is enough to fund a woman’s DNA test to help determine genetic factors that can identify people at high risk of heart disease and lead to new, innovative treatments.” Every little bit counts with Go Red for Women in June, for more inspiration on how to ‘go red’ visit www.goredforwomen. org.au Now in its sixth year, the Heart Foundation’s Go Red for Women campaign helps raise women’s awareness of heart disease. We thank our national campaign supporters Aurizon and Bupa – and national cause supporter Napoleon Perdis for their support of our Go Red for Women activities in June. REFERENCES 1.

CLINICAL PILATES THE BEST MEDICINE

There’s a lot of choice these days when it comes to Pilates. So what makes clinical Pilates different? Clinical Pilates involves individual assessment. It can be used as a treatment for aches and pains and it’s fun!

With the winter chill creeping in, clinical Pilates is a great way to exercise and keep warm. It’s a form of exercise that focuses on posture, core stability, balance, control, strength and flexibility. This model of Pilates allows exercise to be tailored to suit your needs and the needs of any injuries you may be carrying. How did it start? Pilates was originally started by the Germanborn Joseph Pilates in the late nineteenth century. Joseph Pilates was part of the ‘kulturephysique’ era that swept through Europe at this time. People were becoming interested in sport and exercise and its effect on health. This coincided with the reintroduction of the Olympic games in 1896.

Unlike generic Pilates, which is usually run in large classes with a one-size fits all program, clinical Pilates involves individual assessment by trained therapists.

What makes it different? Unlike generic Pilates, which is usually run in large classes with a one-size fits all program, clinical Pilates involves individual assessment by trained therapists. The assessment identifies key issues for each person, which allows the therapist to carefully select exercises to suit people with specific injuries. Each person’s progress is monitored using clinical tests. This allows each person to progress to more difficult exercises when they are ready, rather than when it’s taught in a class. By teaching Pilates this way, people get better faster with minimal risk of aggravation. How do you do it? Clinical Pilates is performed either one-onone with a trained therapist or in small class settings. Exercises can be performed on a mat, a reformer or using other equipment like trapeze tables, Swiss balls, rings or bars. Clinical Pilates exercises focus on some basic principles. • Concentration – Our focus is on correct performance of each exercise and the specific muscles involved.

Clinical Pilates is one model of Pilates. The clinical model has grown out of the dance industry and has been used by ballet dancers for many years. Clinical Pilates has gained acceptance within sports medicine and spinal medicine over the last 20 years as the research base for its efficacy continues to grow.

• Stabilisation – We work in neutral spine and activate core stabilising muscles. • Control – Movements are performed smoothly and efficiently. • Precision – We pay attention to detail to ensure each exercise is performed with the correct technique. • Breathing – Relaxed breathing is maintained throughout all exercises. Do not hold your breath. What are the benefits? There are several benefits to performing clinical Pilates exercises. Here are just a few: • Improved posture and core stability • Increased strength & muscular endurance • Prevention of injury • Aiding rehabilitation • Restoration of normal movement patterns • Increased co-ordination & muscular control • Improved balance • Firmer and flatter stomach muscles • Improved overall body tone If that isn’t enough… it also makes you feel happy!

MIND-BLOWING BLUETOOTH BENEFITS

There are now hearing aid manufacturers that combine cutting-edge hearing aid technology with smartphone technology to deliver revolutionary new hearing solutions.

Bluetooth-compatible hearing aids have been present in the market for around four years now. Although initially there were some teething problems, they’ve mostly been ironed out. Up until recently most Bluetooth hearing aids required an interface device to either be worn around the neck, or within close proximity of the mobile phone, in order for it to transmit the information from the phone to the hearing aids. This means you needed to carry around an extra device as well as your mobile phone on your person. But times have changed… Just imagine – your smartphone and tablet data streaming directly to your hearing aids without the need for any extra neck loops or interface devices. Yes, you can now stream

Just imagine – your smartphone and tablet data streaming directly to your hearing aids without the need for any extra neck loops or interface devices.

all your smartphone information, from Facetime conversations to phone calls to listening to music, without the hassle of neck loops getting in the way or having to remember to carry both phone and interface device. What’s more, the direct Bluetooth connection also allows other applications to work in conjunction with your hearing aids. You can download apps to use your smartphone as a remote control to adjust the volume, treble and bass, and program/ memory settings, and adjust background noise settings. You can also personalise sound settings to any environment and save those settings. Your hearing aids then automatically go into that setting each time you enter that environment in the future.

A sports car on the Birdsville Track?

Another great feature is the apps allow the smartphone to act as an external microphone and stream directly to the hearing aids. For example, if attending church or a lecture you can place your smartphone on the lectern and it will pick up the speaker’s voice and transmit it wirelessly via Bluetooth directly to your hearing aids. The speaker’s voice will be clearer and you can also adjust the volume of their voice to whatever level suits you. For some, the most appealing capability of the app might be the tracking feature that allows the user to find their hearing aids if lost. The hearing aids emit a signal that the smartphone can use to track its location, very handy for those who misplace their hearing aids frequently!

LEANNE SCOTT | CERTIFIED FITGENES PRACTITIONER | CORE NOURISHMENT

GROUND ZERO OF GOOD HEALTH

I have a very special someone I’d like to introduce you to. YOU! In our crazy busy processed world many of us have become so disconnected to our bodies and what they can tell us, yet our very health depends on it. Today we explore the ground zero of good health. YOU!

Thanks to everyone for the huge response to April’s article “Stuck on the Sugar Rush Rollercoaster” We had so many “that’s me!” comments I thought it might be worth exploring the fine art of listening to our bodies. Now I know a few wives out there will be saying “no thanks – I hear hubbies body enough as it is!!” but that’s not exactly what I mean. It’s about learning how to listen to your own body and recognising what it’s trying to tell you. The word symptom often gets a bad wrap – all too often symptoms are seen as an inconvenient fear producing sign with our main response being just ‘making them go away’. But what if I was to tell you your symptoms are far from being a curse but in fact a gift, important messages sent from your body about your health.

What if I was to tell you your symptoms are far from being a curse but in fact a gift – important messages sent from your body about your health.

Symptoms are actually messengers – cries for help from your body and learning to listen to these rather than suppressing is truly the key to unlocking long term optimal health. Of course there are overt symptoms that demand to be heard. For example

spraining your ankle is often accompanied by pain, swelling and the inability to weight bear. Your body is saying this region is injured and cannot be used until it is healed. Those messages we tend to know very well. Listening on the other hand is an entirely different story. But I’m more interested in drawing your attention to the signs from the body that is not so loud. Actually the ones you have no idea are going on simply because we’ve never been taught how to recognise them. In fact some of these symptoms many people believe is just ‘who they are’. Areas of the body that we see every day are our greatest messengers. Our skin, nails, hair, teeth often tell us months to years in advance when the systems of the body are losing normal function. Persistent dry flaky skin may be a sign you require more healthy fats in your diet or other key nutrients. Look at the shape of your nails – are they flat, bowed, spooned or do your fingers swell every time you eat pizza or some other food? Similarly what’s on the inside that’s coming out of you can also tell us many signs of

dysfunction. No. Chronic constipation is not just who you are or an inherited family trait. One of the greatest indicators of nutritional imbalances and inner dysfunction are cravings. Is it you who really has that sweet tooth or something else residing within you? Pathogenic microbes need to eat too! My favourite saying, which anyone who knows me can quote verbatim is this. The body does not waste its time with useless information. Signs and symptoms happen for a reason but most importantly is that they are clues to helping us find the underlying cause. Trust your gut instincts about what your body tells you. Most times you are probably right.

HEADACHES, FATIGUE, MOODINESS BLOATING, CHRONIC JOINT PAIN, IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME, CHRONICALLY BAD SKIN, UNCONTROLLABLE CRAVINGS, UNSHIFTING WEIGHT GAIN...

GOOD NEWS FOR RED WINE LOVERS

You may have heard a rumour that red wine is actually good for you, or maybe you just hoped it wasn’t all that bad. Well, rest assured, it has a secret ingredient that helps protect you from cancer, benefits your heart and even prevents tooth decay.

The beneficial ingredient found in red wine is called Resveratrol. Whenever I read that word I think ‘reverse’-atrol because this antioxidant helps reverse the negative effects of ageing. I guess technically it doesn’t reverse the effects (sorry, there is no fountain of youth), but it can slow down the harmful effects of oxidation in your body significantly. In addition to Resveratrol, red wine contains flavonoids and sapponins that help protect your heart against cardiovascular disease. And that’s not all – there’s a long list of benefits associated with drinking red wine, including: • Raise your levels of ‘good’ HDL cholesterol • Help prevent Type 2 diabetes • Protect you from osteoporosis • Help fight and prevent cancer • Harden your enamel to fight tooth decay This sounds like some kind of miracle drug, right? Of course there are limitations, and you need to exercise moderation because of the negative effects of too much alcohol, but isn’t it nice to be able to treat yourself to the occasional glass of wine without all the guilt because you know you’re doing something good for you?

Red wine consumed with a meal can slow and moderate the blood sugar response you get from that meal.

A study published reported that people who drank two glasses of red wine per day (dry red wine, not sugary dessert wines) had higher levels of beneficial bacteria in their gut and lower levels of pathogenic (bad) bacteria in their gut. This is great news as you know how vastly important your gut flora balance is to everything from your digestion, immunity and metabolism to skin health and much more. The study concluded that while red wine consumption decreased pathogenic bacteria in the gut, it actually had a prebiotic effect in the gut, in that it supported the growth and colonies of gut microbes which protect your health. But the powerful health benefits of red wine don’t stop there… Another exciting benefit is that red wine drinkers also decreased systolic and diastolic blood pressure, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and CRP (C-reactive protein). CRP is a measure of overall inflammation in your body, so it’s great to see an association between red wine and reduced inflammation. You can choose cabernet, merlot, pinot noir, shiraz or any other dry red wine to get all of these powerful health benefits of the

unique polyphenols and Resveratrol. White wine also has some health benefits but is not nearly as powerful as red wine due to the lower antioxidant levels. Another benefit of red wine is that red wine consumed with a meal can slow and moderate the blood sugar response you get from that meal. This is yet another benefit to keeping your hormones balanced, lowering insulin levels, controlling appetite, and staying lean. As you can see, there are plenty of reasons to raise a glass of red wine at your meals and toast to your health and happiness! After all, I’ve seen several stories on the news where they ask a centenarian how they’re so healthy over the age of 100, and one of the answers they seem to frequently give is they have one glass of red wine per day. Red wine just may be a super-healthy choice for a lean healthy body and good digestive health.

CHANGES YOU NEED TO MAKE

Smile Dental’s Hygienist Laurelyn Higgins gets you on track with some simple changes to maintain your dental health.

Wanna cuppa? Hands up: how many folks know that drinking tea is good for dental health? Black, white and green teas contain antioxidants which improve our dental and general health. These teas also contain some fluoride and fluoride works with calcium in the saliva to strengthen tooth enamel. The catch is – no sugar. Then have a swish of water after a cuppa to reduce staining and keep your smile in tiptop shape.

Have a swish of water after your cuppa to reduce staining.

Drowsy driving: accidents waiting to happen A new study shows that driving while tired can be worse than driving with high blood alcohol levels. Sleep apnoea is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person’s breathing is reduced or stops altogether and the body doesn’t get enough oxygen. Drivers with sleep apnoea are involved in 15% to 20% of motor vehicle crashes worldwide. Researchers think that night time teeth grinding and reflux may also be associated with it. Contact us if you snore loudly, wake up tired with sore jaws or teeth and often doze during the day – anytime and anywhere.

Relief for sensitive teeth As gums recede, root surfaces are exposed and they can be painful when they come into contact with something hot, cold, sweet or acidic. With regular use, sensitive toothpastes offer some relief and a longlasting barrier. You can apply a finger smear to the touchy surface, gently massaging for one minute, or you can use it with a soft toothbrush. The trick is – don’t rinse. Give the sensitive toothpaste time to plug the pores and block the pain. Is there a drought in your mouth? Excessively dry eyes and dry mouth along with joint pain are signs of an autoimmune disease called Sjogren’s Syndrome which can be diagnosed with a simple blood test. And it can happen to anyone – including the famous American tennis star Venus Williams. If saliva levels are decreased, germ levels can increase up to 10 times over normal levels – a huge risk for tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath! If you suffer from this problem, talk to us about some solutions. We’re here to help.

Beware of these brushing habits that can seriously ruin your smile: • Not brushing long enough ‘cause 2 minutes is the minimum • Not watching what you’re doing as you stare at the bottom of the sink • Cleaning your teeth like you’re scrubbing the floor • Using a toothbrush with hard bristles • Rinsing after brushing which removes the fluoride toothpaste • Forgetting to floss the areas where the toothbrush can’t reach Junk food may hurt your memory Can’t remember where your smartphone or car keys are? That’s scary and it may be due to what you eat. There’s no doubt that junk foods loaded in fat and sugar cause obesity. But researchers now think that obesity may cause inflammation in the body and the brain too, affecting the spatial memory. My advice: lay off cafeteria cuisine and factory foods. Eat natural foods, not fast foods. A lot smarter for your teeth, too.

TROY BURGESS | ACCREDITED EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGIST | SNAP FITNESS

MOTIVATION – IT’S REQUIRED DAILY…

We had it at the start of the year when we made those New Year resolutions with the best intentions to get healthy, eat better and exercise more. For some, this is easier said than done; Muscle pain, old injuries, back pain, lung conditions or lack of motivation often hold us back. Well, we think they do…

Thanks to Exercise Physiologists – the ‘new kid on the block’, these troubles don’t need to stop you from achieving your goals! Clinical Exercise Physiology is a relatively new allied health profession, however it is gaining more recognition through GP’s, the community and other allied health professionals as being vital for anyone with a chronic disease, injury or requiring rehabilitation. An Exercise Physiologist is a University qualified Allied Health Professional that uses exercise prescription and physical activity for treatment and also helps with lifestyle and behaviour modification. Through physical activity and proper guidance, an Exercise Physiologist can help you overcome these troubles and give yourself the best chance to improve your everyday physical ability, health and wellbeing. “Movement is medicine for creating change in a person’s physical, emotional and mental state” – this quote by Carol Welch sums up the huge positive effects exercise can have on a person’s health and wellbeing. Why should I see an Exercise Physiologist? Most clients referred to an Exercise Physiologist suffer from one or many chronic conditions including; back pain, joint discomfort,

“Movement is medicine for creating change in a person’s physical, emotional and mental state.” Carol Welch

diabetes, obesity, arthritis, hypertension, metabolic conditions, immune disorders, some cancers, musculoskeletal injuries, cardiovascular diseases, anxiety, stress, depression, PTSD and many more. Exercise Physiologists assist their clients in managing, preventing and/or overcoming these conditions so they can enjoy life with maximum functional capacity. So what is the difference between an Exercise Physiologist and a Physiotherapist? A Physiotherapist directly treats acute conditions or injuries with joint manipulation, massage and electrotherapy. An Exercise Physiologist’s role is to prevent and manage chronic disease, injury or disability and ensure that the exercise prescription for each individual is safe, effective and likely to be maintained in the long term. Through exercise prescription and functional training, Exercise Physiologists help their clients gain an increase in function and mobility, decrease in stress and anxiety, reduction in some medications or dosage, weight loss, improved mood and social behaviour, more energy and general increase in quality of life.

How do I see an Exercise Physiologist? You can book in with an Exercise Physiologist directly, without going to your GP. However, if you go to your GP first, you may be eligible for a referral through Medicare or Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), in which case there may be no out of pocket expense. Getting a referral through your GP also allows your Exercise Physiologist to liaise directly with your GP, Nurse or Carer to ensure all parties are on the same page and you are receiving the best care. The first time an individual sees an Exercise Physiologists there is a consultation where their conditions and needs are discussed and then after an initial assessment, the client is prescribed an exercise program depending on their functional assessment and the severity of their condition(s). This exercise program is monitored and altered as necessary as the individual progresses through their training to ensure they can achieve their goals. From helping to prevent a number of diseases, to aiding in the management and combat of depression; it is a fact – exercise DOES have positive physical, mental and emotional benefits. So basically anyone can benefit from a visit to an Exercise Physiologist!

TO BE OR NOT TO BE

ORGANIC?

WORDS LEILANI WATERS

WHAT IS ORGANIC FOOD AND WHAT DOES IT DO FOR YOUR BODY AND MIND?

Beyond that allocated space in the supermarket labelled health foods , ‘organic’ branded foods have become the latest trend for healthier bodies and minds across Townsville. But what does the term organic mean, who can use it, and how can you be sure of its benefits to you and your family? Only products bearing the Australian Certified Organic bud logo (see pic) should be considered ‘organic’ as they comply with the Australian Certified Organic (ACO) Standards. The standards are reviewed every three years and signify that the product is not only ‘chemical free’ but it is also handled in regulation with the standards to be designated as ‘organic’.

Food made with 70-95% of organic ingredients wear a ‘Made with Organic Ingredients’ statement, but do not wear the official ACO logo. WHY IS ORGANIC DIFFERENT THAN OTHER FOOD? Organic food is proven to contain higher antioxidants and other natural vitamins, minerals, and enzymes that help it earn its depiction as ‘the healthier option’. The benefits of organic foods include, better memory, improved digestion, stronger nails and hair, faster skin repair, repairing of sun damage, lower cholesterol, lower blood sugar levels, and have anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and antiaging effects.

Certified Organic products have been grown without the aid of pesticides, artificial fertilisers, synthetic substances, or Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s).

Foods like nuts and blueberries have been shown to improve cognitive brain function, and having richer sources of vitamins and antioxidants in organic foods makes them more effective than the regular produce seen in most supermarkets.

This extends to organic meat where cattle, sheep, chickens, and other animals must be farmed on land with plenty of space, fed a natural diet free from GMO’s, and cannot be given hormones to make them grow faster (www.soilassociation.org).

Other benefits of organic food is that it contains higher vitamin C and selenium levels, and is found to have lower nitrate (an ingredient in fertilizers) accumulated in vegetables and fruit than other produce.

To be fully certified as organic, and to display the ACO logo, a product must typically have at least 95% organic content and cannot contain parabens, sodium laurel sulfates, genetic modification or petroleum derivatives.

The best foods to buy organically include: apples, strawberries, grapes, celery, peaches, spinach, sweet bell peppers, nectarines, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, snap peas, potatoes.

made to last FOR 40 YEARS THE BARTLETT NAME HAS BEEN SYNONYMOUS WITH QUALITY HANDMADE JEWELLERY IN TOWNSVILLE. FATHER AND SON KIM AND JAY TAKE PRIDE IN KEEPING THEIR CRAFT ALIVE AND, LIKE THEIR EXQUISITE PIECES, THEY’RE DESIGNED TO GO THE DISTANCE. WORDS KYLIE DAVIS PHOTOGRAPHY INSIGHT CREATIVE

AT 88 DENHAM STREET in the city, the Kim Bartlett Master Jewellers studio and store front is glamorous but not gaudy. Refined yet modern, it brings together the best of both worlds as do father and son Kim and Jay Bartlett when they collaborate. “Our work is an amalgamation of the two of us,” Kim says. “We’re always bouncing ideas off each other and bring different strengths to the table.” “I’m a little bit old school, but that’s not a bad thing, and Jay’s enthusiasm and fresh ideas have made the business what it is today.” Both Kim and Jay have completed extensive apprenticeships and can fashion future heirlooms from a strip of gold. Accomplished in all facets of diamond setting, jewellery manufacturing and designing, they bring keen eyes to their craft. In an age where even something as personal and precious as jewellery is being mass-produced that’s a rare quality and one their customers embrace. “Our business is based on trust,” Jay says. “We understand that people have an emotional attachment to their jewellery and we’ve earned our customers’ trust, whether it’s trusting us enough to leave a precious item with us for restoration, or trusting us in working together with them to create a treasured piece.” This creative process is a consultative one, Kim stresses. “When somebody walks in to our design studio they speak to Jay or myself – the person who is going to make their jewellery.”

Melbourne’s largest jewellery manufacturers Max Hurwitz Pty Ltd, 21-year-old Kim and his new wife Judi were on a driving honeymoon from Melbourne to Cairns when they decided to stopover in Townsville. While here, they visited prominent jewellery store Horn & Petersen in Flinders Mall and Kim was offered a job on the spot. He turned up for work the very next day and the rest, as they say, is history. Kim went on to become Townsville’s first registered jewellery valuer and gemmologist and establish Kim Bartlett Master Jewellers. To Kim and Judi’s delight, their son followed in his Dad’s footsteps to join the family business. “It was never something I was expected to go into, but I’ve always been drawn to it,” Jay says. “I remember going to work with Dad at his workshop upstairs at Shaw’s Arcade. I was always given the opportunity to tinker and my interest grew from there.” Jay made his first ring while still in primary school – a gold band set with natural citrine that his grandmother wore till the day she died. Like his father, Jay also made his wife’s engagement and wedding rings, which have changed over time allowing him the space to stretch his creative wings and put new cutting-edge skills to the test. For Kim, these skills were tested early. “The first engagement ring I made was for my wife Judi who promptly lost it a month later,” Kim recalls. “We were swimming in a lake at Ballarat and she came up without it. It’s times like these being a jeweller comes in handy.” Over the years Kim and Jay have worked with some memorable materials such as pink and blue Argyle diamonds and Kim will never forget being commissioned to make a white gold and diamond necklace for Julie Andrews to wear in the musical My Fair Lady.

Kim and Jay work so closely with their clientele that they’re often invited to their weddings and their customers’ children also come in to buy jewellery for special occasions. “We certainly feel an attachment to Townsville and the community,” Jay says.

Thanks to their ties with Kailis Jewellery, Kim and Jay also get to work with the finest Australian South Sea Pearls. Like international brand Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen, Kailis sought Kim and Jay out as partners, meaning Townsville gets to enjoy two more premium brands usually only found in capital cities.

While they now can’t imagine living anywhere else, Townsville was initially only meant to be a stop-over for the Bartletts. Having completed a six-year apprenticeship under the instruction of Italian master jeweller Enzo Stella, at one of

It’s opportunities like these and the bright ideas put forward by customers that keep Kim and Jay buzzing. “Customers constantly inspire us with their ideas and what they’re hoping for,” Jay says. “That’s what keeps it refreshing for us.”

THAT LETS YOU SEE HOW YOU LOOK IN 20 SHADES OF RED

The RED LIPSTICK app was borne out of a simple idea: create a better way for women to find & try their perfect shade of red lipstick. It all began when the RED Burlesque team sat around a makeup bench to try to think of a way that enabled women to try a multitude of shades of red lipstick on, without having to go to a multitude of stores and apply so many shades in their eternal search for the perfect red that their lips and wrists hurt. RED LIPSTICK is the first app ever to enable you to use your iPhone or iPad to take a selfie and, thanks to highly advanced and very clever lip tracking technology, try 20 different shades of red lipstick on. You can even share your lipstick selfies on your favourite social media pages and let your friends tell you what they think of you in different shades of red. You can even buy and have them delivered to your door, because all the shades you’ll see are courtesy of the largest range of sumptuous, long-lasting red lipsticks on the planet ...RED Burlesque! The RED LIPSTICK app is available now from the iTunes App Store.

Growing up in Townsville with four brothers, our spare time was spent boating, camping, fishing, competing in triathlons, and playing with Tonka trucks! As a result I’ve grown into a brave and capable woman. These traits are handy as the Marketing Manager for North Shore – Queensland’s 2nd fastest growing suburb. I work in a small dynamic team who are encouraged to be creative and innovative on a day-to-day basis. Busy work is balanced with a beautiful home life of love, laughter, music, food, fitness and perfecting summer cocktails on a Sunday afternoon. I feel blessed to see beauty in the every day.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND TECHNOLOGY – DOES IT HELP OR IS IT A HINDRANCE?

The Family Law Courts have in some part embraced the new technology and in other parts condemned it. So, is it really helpful or is it just a hindrance to separated families?

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Skype, Email, Text Messages, Face Time, YouTube, Instagram, Snap Chat… The list goes on (and on and on…). It is remarkable how far technology and social media has come in the last 10 years and what is more remarkable is how this has impacted on human relations. Who hasn’t seen an ex denigrating the other on Facebook, or heard about their text message wars. Watch out for your friends as well – they may innocently upload a photo of you with that new Louis Vuitton handbag (when you say you have no money) or in a situation where you were supposed to have the children (but are out partying it up). It is easy for me to tell you of the pitfalls of using social media when parties have separated, as we have seen it all and some of the social media sites even have pages dedicated to venting – they are encouraging it! At the end of the day, parents, spouses and alike have probably always acted in the way we are seeing on Facebook and the other social media sites. The only difference is that now everyone can see it instantly, whether you like it or not, and once posted it is there forever. It makes it even more critical

There will always be human error when it comes to technology and social media is no exemption to that.

70 DUO MAGAZINE JUNE 2014 duomagazine.com.au

for people to live as they are always being watched (which in the social media world, they are). The Family Law Courts have looked to social media and have used posts as evidence, often to the peril of one of the parties. For example in one case the Court reviewed evidence of online communications between parents and concluded that the communications did not reflect a relationship of mutual respect and minimal conflict. In another case one Facebook post ended up resulting in a $15,000 cost order! In another case social media was used as evidence to show that the mother was not using the child’s correct surname and the Court considered that this type of behaviour was not encouraging a positive relationship between the parties… You get the picture?! The Court has tried to overcome the misuse of social media by making people accountable for what they do and at the same time it has tried to embrace it (did you know the Family Court has its own official Twitter account and uses YouTube?!). Despite all the negatives there are a lot of benefits to using social media and

technology such as instant exchange of new pictures and keeping in contact with children via Skype, using email to be able to communicate in a convenient and often safe way (especially if there is physical violence) and solicitors have been able to locate and serve people via Facebook. My opinion is that social media and technology is helpful to everyday life, particularly for separated families (whether that separation is due to distance or a relationship breakdown). It does not need to be a hindrance. What is the hindrance is the end user and their attitude. There will always be human error when it comes to technology and social media is no exemption to that. If you use social media and technology responsibly and with respect for other people, then there should be no issue. As I always say – ask yourself: would you want a Judge to read it? Would you say it to your mother? Would you say it to the person’s face? If you have answered no to any of those questions, my advice for you is to either don’t post it or if you have no self-control – stay offline, social media is not meant for you!

HOW DOES MY PAST INFLUENCE MY CURRENT RELATIONSHIP?

We’re all products of the life we’ve come from. In a relationship, these past experiences can create both positive and negative beliefs that influence the here and now. How do couples navigate the good and bad from their past?

Relationships can be a very rewarding part of our lives. They can give us security, comfort and many moments of joy. However, there is no denying that relationships are also hard work. Everything doesn’t just go along smoothly because two people are in love. When we really stop and think about the complexities associated with bringing together two people from different family backgrounds, life experiences, cultures, beliefs etc. it’s no surprise that there are many bumps along the way. Due to all of these differences, the ‘bumps’ can be as small as ‘you don’t hang the washing out properly’ to as large as ‘why don’t you talk to me anymore?’ The majority of these ‘bumps’ are a normal part of any relationship and assist in our growth and development as a couple. When we look at the differences between our life experiences and the other facets previously mentioned, it is always crucial to start with our family of origin. This exercise however, is not an opportunity to blame our families for all our unsuccessful relationships but more to understand some of our behaviours and patterns. When we look back

We forget that our way is simply one way, not necessarily the right way.

over our childhood and teenage years we can see where some of our thoughts and beliefs on relationships, marriage and all things associated, have originated from. Sometimes we have seen healthy role modeling in this area and sometimes we have seen patterns that we wouldn’t want to carry forward into our own relationships. Remember too, our partner, boyfriend; girlfriend; husband or wife has their own set of life experiences that will also influence their thoughts and beliefs on relationships as well. It is easy to see how this can get tricky very quickly! What can add to all this confusion is that each person will think that their thoughts and beliefs on relationships is the ‘right way’ of thinking. We forget that our way is simply one way, not necessarily the right way. If both people are thinking their way is the right way and therefore the only way, it is easy to see how conflict can arise in relationships again and again.

think back to their early years and look at the role models that influenced them. Focus on what was learnt from them – the good and sometimes not so good. Then explore how some of that learnt behaviour plays a part in their current life and relationships. Secondly, the couple must communicate with each other. Each person needs to explain what he or she has learnt from other significant relationships in their lives and how some of that is playing a part right now. Both people in the relationship then have the opportunity to compare their role modeling and identify the similarities and differences. Once these have been identified it makes it easier in the future to realise that some of the ‘bumps’ are just different perspectives created from the past, rather than a wrong or right way.

It’s not all doom and gloom though. Two things will help navigate this area of relationships. Firstly, both people need to

EWEN JONES MP | FEDERAL MEMBER FOR HERBERT

BE CAREFUL, MUM’S DON’T KNOW NOTHING! My eldest, Emma, turned 21 in May and it caused me to reflect on what it is to be a parent and a child. To think that Emma is now 21 and yet I have not aged a day since she was born is truly amazing.

“IT WAS ME, AS THE MEAT IN THE SIBLING SANDWICH WHERE THE CRUELEST OF FATES BEFELL ME.”

When you think about a milestone birthday it is hard not to think about how you were at that age. This brings me to my story. Kids, be careful with parents because, while they may all seem to be the font of wisdom when you are very young, some are just very normal people, capable of being snowed by the youngest in the family… You may not recognise it, but I am a middle child, one of three boys. So in our family, we have the first born, the baby, and someone else floating around, we think… It was me, as the meat in the sibling sandwich where the cruelest of fates befell me. I was in grade six with my older brother in high school in grade eight. The pride of moving from class to class and being able to do woodwork and tech drawing was not lost on our family. Graeme’s tech drawing sketch book was his pride and joy. I have no idea why this was so, because he is every bit as handy as I, and that would mean that all those lessons were a waste of money.

There was a banshee like wail from our bedroom as Graeme sought to destroy me for scribbling over his book. It was all there: “Ewen did this” was scribbled on one of the pages. Graeme had me in a choke hold while I rasped “It was not me” repeatedly when Mum walked into the room. She broke it up and while I tried to set the record straight that I was completely innocent, Mum donned her deer stalker and inserted her Sherlock Holmes pipe. She called our younger, grade four brother, into the room. While I stood there and argued the point that I would be completely stupid to write my own name, Stewart entered the room with the angelic disposition of a Saint in waiting. Mum decided the only way to decide innocence or guilt was to do a writing comparison. She gave me the pencil. Now, as the original message was a rank scrawl, I did the right thing and scribbled the message out again. Stewart looked deep into our mother’s eyes and told her “I will be as neat as I can, Mummy”, and proceeded to drive my mother to tears with her pride. I was pronounced guilty at the scene and I was executed on the spot, in full view of a beaming younger brother. We still talk about the funny things that happened when we were kids, and this one always gets a laugh from the whole family. All except for the middle child, but no one cares about him anyway!!

TOWNSVILLE HOSPITAL CHILDREN’S WARD REDEVELOPMENT

OUR GIFT TO THE CHILDREN AND THE FAMILIES OF NORTH QUEENSLAND THE TOWNSVILLE HOSPITAL FOUNDATION IS EMBARKING ON OUR BIGGEST PROJECT TO DATE, A FULL REDEVELOPMENT OF THE CURRENT CHILDREN’S WARD AT THE TOWNSVILLE HOSPITAL. THE OVERALL AIM will be to provide a contemporary infant, children and adolescent environment that meets gold standard clinical care to address the needs of infants, children and adolescents of all ages within our community. For any of us, it’s not much fun being in hospital. Our existing Children’s Ward whilst functional is old; it is unable to deliver the optimal patient experience for our children. We believe this can be achieved with modern design, technology, equipment and creativity. This is the gift we wish to provide for our children. Remodeling of the Paediatric Unit will support efficient work flows and proximity of areas such as treatment, medication and clinical supplies. A change to single and double rooms will provide opportunities for self care management, confidentiality, competence, control and choice for children and families. The physical environment design will provide personal space, privacy, independent movement and comfortable surroundings. Colour, artwork and brightness will be important aesthetic elements for children and adolescents perception of comfort, fun and as a welcoming environment. Having the walls, ceilings and floors that are all

interactive and that promote imaginative play and diversion, for example underwater theme, story book or fish bowl themes. Single rooms will enhance patient flow and reduce waiting times in emergency, outpatients and admission clinics for treatment. Infection control will be improved. Children following head injury, acute headaches, and with psychiatric issues often require single rooms for optimal management. There are 30 children in the THHS that have cystic fibrosis who require regular hospitalisation in a single room. On average children with cystic fibrosis require hospitalisation 2-3 times per year for 2-3 week periods. Currently, these admissions are planned based on clinical information and the availability of single rooms. The single room option will facilitate a timely admission for treatment and enable more than two children with cystic fibrosis to be admitted at any one time. The proposed new twin rooms will enable siblings to be nursed together in the same room. Single and twin rooms will provide improved patient flow through the emergency department for children requiring isolation or a single room environment for clinical reasons.

Children requiring transfer from intensive care will be accommodated in a quiet single room with their parent and direct access to bathroom/toilet. This enables recovery in a child friendly environment and access to appropriate and timely care. Families and children from outside the Townsville area will be supported to maintain contact with family and friends while caring for their sick child in hospital by using modern technology. This would include WiFi throughout the unit. The provision of dedicated adolescent space acknowledges the different needs of the younger child and need for quiet and interactive time in different spaces. At the moment we are unable to provide separate areas even when the age gap is so great. A vast number of studies have been published on how physical environment, including colours, impacts on one’s mood and mental health. Admission to hospital, even if done well, is a stressful event in the life of a child and their family. It is paramount that a contemporary paediatric space be purpose built to reflect true core values of family centred care.

FAMILY IS A TEAM

“AVOID PAYING CHILDREN TO HELP OUT IN A FAMILY. PAYING CHILDREN GIVES THEM A SELF-CENTRED ATTITUDE IN LIFE.”

Do you find yourself getting frustrated that your kids don’t help? You are not alone in this one! Frustration happens in families when one or more parents take on the responsibility of juggling just about everything in a family and they become worn out, frustrated and frazzled. Certainly with little kids, it’s unrealistic to expect them to take on roles and responsibilities of a parent but for older children there are certainly a number of ways they can help. Start with changing your thinking – start to think of your family as a team, no matter how big or small, it’s a team and everyone should contribute for the good of everyone. All children, regardless of age can certainly make their bed, tidy their room, and set the table and prepare breakfast or a number of steps towards this anyway. Try to develop that sense of teamwork – it often doesn’t come naturally just the same in business or sport, you need good leadership and ownership from its members. A family is the same. You are all in this together and it is a ‘we’ not a ‘me’. Divide the jobs up to be done: there are personal and family jobs. So make a list and divide. Look carefully at the list and work out who can do what, involvement of your children is essential at this step. Kids jobs should look like this: dirty clothes in washing basket, making beds, tidying bedrooms, packing lunch in schoolbag, putting clean clothes away. These will not take them long to do.

For other jobs, make the list and get them to choose. As for those unpopular jobs – rotation is the key, rotate who takes out the rubbish, unpacks the dishwasher everyday. As parents you will need to remind children that it is not their priority, however avoid the nagging! Serve dinner without the table being set, knives and forks will be quickly found! Avoid over-loading your children with jobs or they will become resentful. And avoid paying children to help out in a family. Paying children gives them a self-centred attitude in life. Belonging to a family teaches children a lot about belonging to groups, and if you always pay them they look at the world by ‘what’s in this for me?’ rather than ‘how can I help out?’ attitude. Think about how this would look in a workplace of the future… even for young children work out what they can do and how they can help rather than say “they are too young for that”, you will be setting them on a path to teamwork rather than being self-centred. It all starts at home.

TOWNSVILLE CITY COUNCIL

WHEN IT COMES TO INVESTING TOWNSVILLE SHINES MAYOR OF TOWNSVILLE, CR JENNY HILL

Townsville is a prospering city in an era of significant growth. As the population of the city continues to grow rapidly, over coming years it presents more opportunities for business development and investment as the demand for services and facilities grows. Over the next 25 years development in Townsville will be guided by the new City Plan, which will be adopted later this year. Through this plan a range of strategies will be implemented to support investment, encourage new business and manage residential growth in a sustainable manner. The development of activity centres in key areas of the city will add additional housing choices to the property market and develop hubs for business investment and development in close proximity to residents. One of these areas is Townsville’s CBD which council aims to have 30,000 people living and working in it by 2030. Townsville City Council has provided a major stimulus for development in the CBD with an incentives scheme which has supported more than $270 million in development in the inner city in three years. This has included 15 projects that will result in 302 new residential apartments, 221 short stay accommodation apartments and in excess of 33,191 square metres of commercial and retail space in the CBD. As the CBD continues to grow, developers gain confidence in the area as it attracts more residents and visitors, in turn creating demand for more retail, accommodation, entertainment and dining options. The City Lane project is a great example of

the CBD’s future. Embracing a metropolitan laneway feel and bringing a point of difference to the inner city. It is these types of developments that will pave the way to establishing a bustling inner city that is rich in cultural, dining and social experiences. City wide there has been extensive growth in retail in recent years. Last month council approved a major expansion for one of our city’s largest shopping centres. There have been a number of retailers expanding business or bringing new stores to the city which shows there is confidence in the Townsville economy and their presence will help meet the demand of our growing city. All levels of government, as well as our key guiding bodies including the Townsville Chamber of Commerce and Townsville Enterprise, have a role to play in fostering the growth of our city and ensuring that adequate infrastructure, employment and services are available. Part of that is to continue to encourage investment in our city, promote sustainable development and provide our community with opportunities to grow and prosper. The future of Townsville is bright as we continue on the path of becoming the capital of North Queensland. Cr Jenny Hill Mayor of Townsville

BUSINESS NEWS PORT OF TOWNSVILLE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER APPOINTED TO TOWNSVILLE ENTERPRISE BOARD The Townsville Enterprise Board has appointed Ranee Crosby, Chief Executive Officer, Port of Townsville Limited, as a Discretionary Director. A member of the Townsville Enterprise Economic Development Strategic Advisory Committee for the past 12 months her appointment to the Board has been welcomed by the Chairman of the Townsville Enterprise Board, Kevin Gill. “Ranee is an outstanding young business woman who leads the city’s vital transport and trade hub. Ranee is well respected in the community and brings a high level of skill, expertise and a strong knowledge

of the local region to this important role.” Ms Crosby said she is delighted to join the Townsville Enterprise Board at a time when Townsville is front and centre of the Governments Northern Australia Agenda. “I am very pleased to be appointed to the TEL Board; it’s a great opportunity to provide industry perspective in terms of economic development for the North and North West Queensland region.” PASSPORT TO COMPETE GLOBALLY Australian Steel Fabricators (ASF) is a new Joint Venture Company formed recently to enable companies in Australia to compete with overseas rivals, while keeping

local jobs and employment within Australia. To compete globally in Australia, a number of challenges have been identified in meeting the demand for locally sourced steel fabrications. Although ASF is likely to increase opportunities through collaboration and joint venturing with other companies in the Structural Steel Fabrication sector, to increase capacity and meet demand on major projects, we are still at risk because of our high labour costs. Companies and individuals who want to remain competitive in this tough market should contact Marcel McLeod at marcel@australiansteelfabricators.com.au to find out how they can participate.

REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT AUSTRALIA

NORTHERN QUEENSLAND: LAND OF OPPORTUNITY

GLENYS SCHUNTNER, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT AUSTRALIA TOWNSVILLE AND NORTH WEST QUEENSLAND

The Asia-Pacific region has a fast growing population, many fast growing economies and a growing appetite for minerals, coal, beef, horticultural products, professional and technical services including education and tourism. Northern Queensland is ideally placed to capitalise on these opportunities. Exports from the region are already making their way to international markets and the signs are positive for future growth. Local businesses are increasing their production or outputs and diversifying their target markets to guard against having “all their eggs in the one basket”. Inbound investment is also showing strong signs of increasing with investors visiting the region to see first hand the region’s primary, secondary and tertiary industries. Much of the Northern Queensland region has abundant supplies of the key natural resources for agribusiness: fertile soils, sunlight and water supplies. These natural resources are complemented by well-established infrastructure in terms of power and transport networks including access to ports which makes Northern Queensland an ideal location to expand on existing investments. The region is a renowned cattle and sugar producing region. Currently, however, there is substantial interest in expanding agricultural production to diversify the range of commercial crops to include grains, horticultural and fibre crops. As these expanded cropping projects develop, downstream investments are expected to be developed such as a rice mill and other food processing facilities. Northern Queensland is also a hub for science, research and innovation in the tropics with expertise in areas relating to fields as broad as medicine, marine biosciences, sustainable housing design and aquaculture to name just a few areas of well recognised expertise. Businesses are fortunate to have a number of organisations that collaborate and support the promotion of exports and attraction of investment into the region – such as Austrade, the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning, Trade and Invest Queensland, MITEZ and Townsville Enterprise. Local Councils play an important role in welcoming investors and providing briefings on local investment conditions.

80 DUO MAGAZINE JUNE 2014 duomagazine.com.au

Within the region a number of Councils have been working to identify and articulate their key investment opportunities. These include expansion of irrigated agriculture, development of a meat processing facility, granite mining and processing, other exploration and mining, large scale water storage and distribution and an educational tourism facility. If you are interested in capturing opportunities for business expansion through exporting or investment attraction, visit http://www.rdanwq.org.au/resources-and-links for links to information and subscribe to RDA’s Community Connections newsletter for information about future exporting and investing workshops in the region.

EOFY TAX STRATEGIES FOR INDIVIDUALS AS WE RAPIDLY HEAD TOWARDS A NEW FINANCIAL YEAR, THERE ARE A NUMBER OF SMART STRATEGIES YOU COULD CONSIDER TO HELP YOU STREAMLINE YOUR FINANCES AND MINIMISE YOUR PERSONAL TAX LIABILITY. THE FOLLOWING SUMMARISES WHAT MANY NORTH QUEENSLANDERS CAN DO IN PREPARATION PRIOR TO PREPARING THEIR TAX RETURNS BEFORE THE END OF THE FINANCIAL YEAR.

INSURANCE PREMIUMS

MANAGING CAPITAL GAINS

Some insurance premiums, such as those for income protection insurance, are generally tax deductible as an expense incurred in earning your income.

Don’t forget to keep any receipts for work-related expenses such as uniforms, training courses and learning materials, as these may be deductible for tax purposes.

It’s important to assess if you have made any capital gains or losses from your investments. The most common way you make a capital gain (or capital loss) is by selling assets such as property, shares or managed fund investments. Managed funds also distribute capital gains, which you must report. The Australian capital gains tax system is quite complex so it’s important to consult with your tax adviser.

TAX DEDUCTIONS FOR INVESTMENT EXPENSES

TIMING IS EVERYTHING

WORK-RELATED EXPENSES

Expenses you incur while earning assessable investment income may be tax deductible. E.g.; account-keeping and management fees and interest payments on investment loans. Claiming a tax deduction for these expenses could reduce your assessable income for the financial year, although not all expenses are immediately deductible.

Some of these strategies can take time to plan and implement. Just as importantly, a super contribution is registered in the financial year in which it is received and processed by the fund, regardless of a postal delay or technical problem. So stay ahead of the curve and get in touch with your financial adviser soon to find out how you can plan to get the most out of this end of financial year.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO SUPER

WHAT TO DO NEXT

Contributing to your super can be one of the most tax-effective ways of building your retirement savings. However, you need to be extra careful not to exceed your concessional contributions cap and incur excess tax. The annual contributions caps as of 1 July 2013 are: • $25,000 per financial year (indexed) for pre-tax (concessional) contributions if aged under 59 at 30 June 2013, or • $35,000 (non-indexed) if aged 59 or over at 30 June 2013 However, it is important to be very careful in this area. Contributions made over these caps are currently taxed up to a hefty 46.5%.

At Journey Financial Group we can help you identify which strategy will work best for you. Remember, it’s all about “your” needs so that you can be financially prepared for today and into retirement.

AVOIDING MISTAKES BEFORE YOU BUY.

THERE IS AN OLD ADAGE IN REAL ESTATE CIRCLES THAT IMPLIES ‘AS SAFE AS BRICKS AND MORTAR’. IS PROPERTY INVESTMENT REALLY AS SAFE AS THE SAYING WOULD HAVE US BELIEVE?

Well the answer lies within the clues that history provides us with. These clues and the interpretation of these clues allow us to draw conclusions regarding, why property investors succeed and indeed why property investors fail.

Unfortunately in many cases, properties are bought and properties are sold without a sound basis of knowledge. The knowledge required, which in a lot of cases can determine success from failure based on its utilisation.

We’ve all heard of someone who owned a property for a lengthy period of time and in fact didn’t seem to make much money from it, if anything at all. That situation, may in fact be related to an experience that you have had personally. Why can someone own a property for say 7 years and in effect not make any or substantial profits? In fact, the reality is that national statistics suggest that between 50% and 60% of all property investors have either experienced this or will experience an inverse relationship between expectations and results into the future. Quite alarming, when we are talking about one of the major asset classes available to everyday Australians, forever tagged with “As safe as bricks and mortar”.

Within the context of the free presentation ”How to Avoid the two Largest Mistakes made by Property Investors”, you will be stepped through why these mistakes are made and indeed how to avoid them.

The reality whilst confronting, is in effect very much avoidable.

From the historical clues, to the technicalities and psychologies behind investor decisions, this presentation will allow you to understand the key fundamentals to property investment and give you the most valuable of insights when it comes to either your first investment property or the continuation of your portfolio. Presenter, Craig Whaley who has over 22 years experience as a Property Investment Consultant takes you through this information in a clear, logical manner with an emphasis on education and understanding.

PORT OF TOWNSVILLE

CELEBRATING 150 YEARS OF TRADING SUCCESS PATRICK BRADY, CHAIRMAN AT PORT OF TOWNSVILLE LIMITED

The Port of Townsville celebrates a significant milestone this year – 150 years since the beginning of trade. The city of Townsville was built around the Port, and since those first days of trade back in 1864, it has been intrinsically linked to the economic growth and sustainability of our region. Essentially if the port’s trade numbers and outlook are strong, you’ll see the same strength and business confidence all across North Queensland. Today, the port is led by homegrown CEO Ranee Crosby and overseen by a predominantly local Board of Directors. As Chairman, I’m immensely proud to identify as a Townsville local, and the recent appointment of Ranee sends a powerful message that our region has the capability to develop and retain people with exceptional skills and talent. Over the last five years we’ve endured unprecedented levels of global economic upheaval and uncertainty. Indeed this uncertainty seems to have become the new norm, to a point where both business and the community in general have accepted and adapted to it. The emergence of China and South East Asia as economic powerhouses during these recent global economic shifts has presented significant new opportunities for Townsville and the North Queensland region. From a Port perspective, more than 70% of our trade during 2012/2013 was with Asian markets – and this share is increasing. With its close proximity to Asia and good connectivity of road and rail transport links to key catchment areas, Townsville has a distinct advantage of being the most globally connected port in Northern Australia. It is these advantages that position us for continued long term trade growth. The Port of Townsville is also unique in the diversity of cargo it can handle – more than 30 commodities spanning resources, agriculture, chemicals, fuels, general cargo and project cargo. This means opportunities for our local farmers and industry to export their products from a port that is close to home. More than $500 million has recently been invested at the Port both in infrastructure and transport links to increase capacity and improve efficiency in the supply chain. This includes the $230 million Townsville Port Access Road and the $85 million upgrade of Wharf 10 and construction of Quayside Terminal. This facility has given Townsville the opportunity to grow its tourism market.

86 DUO MAGAZINE JUNE 2014 duomagazine.com.au

Wharf 10 has also delivered the Defence Force with its most strategic naval asset in the north. And each time a cruise ship or defence vessel stops in Townsville, it provides a vital injection and stimulus into our local economy. In the next few months we’ll also see the completion of an $80 million upgrade of Berth 8, a state-of-the-art minerals and fertilizer export facility project funded by POTL, Glencore and Incitec Pivot. These investments have already produced increases in general cargo, container trade, and live export movements. Moving forward we see huge opportunities to increase trade in these areas, as well as growth in the agricultural sector and motor vehicle imports. A number of exciting key developments are looming large on the horizon including the Townsville Eastern Access Rail Corridor to increase the capacity of rail access into the port; the City Port Precinct project redevelopment of Ross Creek waterfront, opening up of the Townsville State Development Area, and the Berth 12 and Port Expansion Projects. With such significant projects and opportunities upon us, the economic future for our region looks bright.

APM PRICEFINDER

TOWNSVILLE HOUSING MARKET RISING AGAIN DR ANDREW WILSON, SENIOR ECONOMIST, APM PRICEFINDER

After a prolonged period of subdued buyer activity, the Townsville housing market is showing definite signs of revival. Latest APM PriceFinder data reports that the median house price in Townsville increased by 1.4% over the March quarter, which was the best result recorded since the December quarter 2012. Townsville house prices rose marginally over the year ending March 2014 which was the first positive annual result since 2010. Townsville recorded a median house price over the March quarter of $365,000 and although growth has resumed in the local market, prices remain 5.2% below their previous peak recorded in June 2010. The recent improved performance by the Townsville housing market reflects improvements in other housing markets driven by the sharp improvement in affordability as interest rates fell to their lowest level in 60 years. Similar to Townsville, most Queensland regional markets are recording an improvement in housing market performance, with the Brisbane market typically leading the way. Brisbane house prices increased by 5.2% over 2013, the best result since 2009. The Brisbane market is now recording consistent quarterly price growth, which similar to Townsville, follows a lengthy period of subdued buyer activity. Brisbane house prices are now just 1.3% below their previous price peak recorded in June 2010 and record price levels are expected to be realised during 2014. The Townsville median house price at $365,000 remains the most affordable of the major regions in far north Queensland, below Cairns at $380,000 and Whitsunday at $405,000 and significantly below Brisbane at $466,000. Although the Townsville housing market is showing steady signs of life, the unit market remains subdued, reflecting the significant issues to this market from body corporate fees and insurances that have impacted unit development throughout far north Queensland.

Townsville suburbs that produced notable performances over the past year included: • Idalia with a median of $510,000 and annual prices growth of 8.5 • Douglas with a current median price of $415,000 and annual prices growth of 8.4% • Bushland Beach also with a median of $415,000 and annual prices growth of 5.7%. Dwelling construction levels have increased strongly this year in Townsville, again reflecting an improvement in housing market conditions and good news also for the local economy. Reflecting Townsville’s pre-eminence as Queensland’s strongest regional economy, population growth levels are rising with latest ABS data recording a 2.5% increase over the 2013 financial year. Strong population growth has however impacted on the local employment market and although jobs growth remains positive, the unemployment rate is rising as the economy struggles to absorb increased demand from new arrivals. The latest unemployment rate of 5.8%, however, remains clearly the lowest in the region and significantly below Brisbane at 7.0%. House price growth is set to continue at modest levels in Townsville throughout 2014 reflecting the increased buyer energy and confidence that is impacting on most Queensland housing markets. The prospect of a lower dollar will activate the local economy with it’s diverse economic profile – one of its great advantages through significant exposure to mining, agriculture, tourism, government services, military, education and a wide spectrum of commercial and industrial activities. Increased economic activity in Townsville will ensure the region remains a key target for both domestic and international investors. Following an encouraging start to 2014 with price growth resuming, Townsville housing market should continue to gather momentum through the year with moderate prices growth expected of 4.0%, which will be the best result since 2010. TOWNSVILLE CITY COUNCIL

IMAGE: MICHAEL CHAMBERS

IN 2014, TOWNSVILLE WILL HAVE A SINGLE, INTEGRATED CITY PLAN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ITS HISTORY. DUO MAGAZINE SPOKE TO MAYOR, COUNCILLOR JENNY HILL ABOUT HOW THE PLAN WILL UNDERPIN THE NEXT GENERATION OF GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE NORTH.

A NEW PLAN – A NEW PLACE TO INVEST What’s different about Townsville’s new City Plan? The new City Plan is all about balancing sustainable growth and our community’s lifestyle aspirations. It puts the conditions in place that will help us achieve the kind of city we want to live in now and in the future. It’s different because it’s flexible, tolerant of risk and open to review. It provides certainty to the community as well as investors, and importantly does away with unnecessary ‘red tape’. The plan creates the right environment for sustainable growth to occur – which goes to the heart of Townsville’s future. We see investment and lifestyle opportunity as the pathways to make this happen. Council consulted extensively in developing the new City Plan and it is great to see this community vision reflected in the final plan; whilst the final plan is a more commercially robust document because of the input of our business community, its real value is typified by how the plan balances these commercial realities with the aspirations of our community. How will the City Plan turn this vision into reality? The vision of the new City Plan will have a very real impact on our economic wellbeing, our lifestyles, our natural environment, and our heritage. It will harness the investment our community has made over time in infrastructure like roads, water and sewerage. It will do this by focusing new development into either our established greenfield growth fronts, or into activity centres in the CBD, Aitkenvale, Thuringowa Central and North Ward. These diverse and vibrant activity centres will provide a range of housing choice, whilst providing the opportunity to put downward pressure on rates by maximising the return on our community’s investment in our existing infrastructure.

88 DUO MAGAZINE JUNE 2014 duomagazine.com.au

In terms of investment, we want to make it easier for the right developments to occur in the right locations. Our results speak volumes to this approach, and Council’s development assessment services will continue to be simpler, faster and more accountable. We will publish our performance standards and our results, and we have placed timeliness at the core of our service. New operational products like Plan Right, which guarantees a five day turn around for low-risk and preferred developments, will continue to expand and cover more uses such as Operational Works and Plan Sealing. How will the City Plan cut costs? Townsville is well and truly open for business. We’re cutting through the red tape. There is less process meaning less time and money spent seeking the assessment of new projects. Under the new City Plan, for example, building a detached home no longer requires a development application, similarly converting an existing CBD building from an old office block to a new shopping centre no longer requires a development application. How does the City Plan benefit Townsville? As a community, the new City Plan will help us have the best say in determining how we grow. It will support major projects and put conditions in place to help create more affordable homes and community hubs. Building the best environment for investment is more than a contribution to our city’s wealth – it will open up lifestyle and business choices. It’s an exciting time for our city as we work together to fulfil the potential of our economy and build on the elements that make Townsville a great place to live. Our new City Plan leads the way in attracting the investment needed.

“MY APPARENT FITNESS HAD MASKED A MORE SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH MY CORONARY ARTERIES DUE TO MY FAMILY GENES.” JOHN GALLOWAY

JOHN’S STORY Construction manager John Galloway was riding his mountain bike on the ‘Under the Radar’ trail at Pallarenda in February when he realised he was in trouble. “I turned around not long into the ride and headed back to Pallarenda Park where I called my wife who then rang 000,” John says. “I was struggling for breath and the chest pain was relentless. I also felt very nauseous and on the point of passing out.” The sound of the ambulance siren was a big relief for John and his wife Margaret, who had been receiving emergency instructions over the phone. “Family and friends were very surprised as I had no prior warning of the heart attack and I was quite fit for my age,” John says. “My cardiologist advised my apparent fitness had masked a more serious problem with my coronary arteries due to my family genes and this had most likely delayed the inevitable. Previous stress tests involving ECG monitoring did not reveal any issues, however a CT scan of my coronary arteries would’ve been advisable given my family history.” John was in the cardiac ward for over a week where his recovery was monitored by a very caring team of professionals who explained what had happened and the implications of coronary heart disease. Fortunately John has some great mates he’s been able to rely upon, alongside family, as he continues his recovery program. “Pat Brady called me while I was in hospital and suggested we get together for lunch after I got things in order,” John says. “He told me the mental side of it was an issue I had to deal with and he was right. Mark Franzmann called a few weeks later and the three of us went for a long lunch to share our similar experiences. Our ‘Rebore Club’ name came from the fact we’ve all had stents installed in our coronary arteries.”

“THE BIGGEST PROBLEM ABOUT HEART ATTACKS IS THAT YOU DON’T SEE THEM COMING, AND YOU IGNORE THE SIGNS.” PAT BRADY PAT’S STORY If you were on the verge of a heart attack, you’d know about it, right? Not necessarily. UDP Group Executive Director Pat Brady had a number of ‘events’ when he was 43 years young and says it’s nothing like we see in the movies. “The first was during a steps session at Dairy Farmers Stadium. I got to the top of the stand and felt a tightening of the chest, and stopped,” Pat says. “My instructor gave me some gentle encouragement and I kept going (a bit stupid upon reflection) and finished the session. I told myself I’d go for a check-up.” A week later, Pat was training for the Townsville Triathlon when he found himself short of breath on a bike lap. Once he slowed down, the tightening eased and he said to himself ‘I must get that checked out…’ Another two weeks later, Pat was at a corporate outrigging day when he had a major attack while paddling in the boat. This time his wife was there and she ignored his pleas not to go to hospital. “The biggest problem about heart attacks is that you don’t see them coming, and you ignore the signs,” Pat says. “My advice to people now, after my experience, is to recognise that a heart attack (or precursors) is not the Hollywood version, but is the sore arm, the shortness of breath and the tight chest. Get it checked out. The doctors and nurses would far rather tell you that it was a false alarm, than get to you too late.”

MARK’S STORY It was a Saturday morning and Mark Franzmann, Managing Director of Franzmann Plumbing Pty Ltd, had just been out for breakfast with his wife Sue after a work-out session when neardisaster struck. On their way home, Mark mentioned to Sue, who was behind the wheel, that he had a really strong pain in the chest and was short of breath… “I didn’t think much of it at that time but later on, when I went to the cardiologist, he advised me I’d had a heart attack and was extremely lucky to be alive,” Mark says. “I was admitted to hospital immediately and spent 10 days there. I had one procedure during that stay, when four stents were put into one of my arteries that was totally blocked. Two weeks later I came back for an investigation procedure on another artery that may’ve caused a problem too.” Mark’s friends and family were in “total disbelief” when they learned he’d had a heart attack because he had a regular exercise program and ate quite well. The doctor told Mark it was this good fitness routine that probably saved him. “I believe everyone should go for a check-up with their doctor, especially for cholesterol, and not just think ‘this won’t happen to me’. There was no history of heart problems in my family and I couldn’t believe this had happened,” Mark says. “My advice to DUO readers would be to always try and do some form of exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet. Also, make sure you know what the warning signs are and call an ambulance straight away.”

“EVERYONE SHOULD GO FOR A CHECK-UP WITH THEIR DOCTOR, ESPECIALLY FOR CHOLESTEROL, AND NOT JUST THINK ‘THIS WON’T HAPPEN TO ME’.” MARK FRANZMANN

AUSTRALIAN MUSIC LEGEND, RUSSELL MORRIS IS EAGER AS EVER TO RETURN TO TOWNSVILLE AND PERFORM AT THE VENUE. RUSSELL SPOKE TO DUO MAGAZINE ABOUT SOME OF HIS GREATEST VICTORIES ALONG HIS MUSICAL JOURNEY INCLUDING WINNING THE 2013 ARIA AWARD FOR BEST BLUES AND ROOTS ALBUM FOR SHARKMOUTH AND HIS LATEST MASTERPIECE, VAN DIEMEN’S LAND. DUO: So, what are your thoughts about coming back to Townsville this month? RM: I’ve been trying to get back there for ages but no one would book me! So I’m really excited to get back there.

made this country as important as it is. All those people that came out on boats as prisoners, the settlers that went through such hard times, they’re the things that made us and they’re our roots so I figured that’s what I have to write about!

What can your Townsville fans expect to see when they come to your show? Well, seeing as my last two albums have both been top ten, they’ll see a fair bit of Sharkmouth and a fair bit of Van Diemen’s Land and I’ll probably throw in a couple of old hits from the 60s and 70s.

When you were writing those albums did you think that they would be as successful as they have been? Did you imagine they would be top ten albums? No! I mean that honestly!

Sharkmouth and Van Diemen’s Land were both top ten albums; can you explain to our readers what your inspirations were for those albums? Well I wanted to go back and do a Blues and Roots album…but then I had a pop hit and I sort of went along that road. I was in the middle of writing songs and they sounded sort of quasi-American and it just wasn’t gelling for me. I saw a photo of Thomas Archer which is on the front of Sharkmouth and it almost spoke to me and it said “listen I’m an Australian, I want you to write and tell people about my story because this is roots music! Tell people that I lived and breathed and if you’re going to write blues and roots music write about what you know! Write about your own roots and blues!” That photo and that experience brought that out in me… I really just needed to write about the stories of Australia, our history and things like that which

So you’ve been a little bit blown away by the successes? Definitely! It’s been a phenomenal feeling, particularly to have the next album come out and have both albums eclipse the success I had with ‘The Real Thing’, ‘Sweet, Sweet Love’ and ‘Wings of an Eagle’. What would you say has been the highlight of your career? Winning the ARIA! I hadn’t won an ARIA and winning the ARIA for Best Blues and Roots Album last year was the absolute highlight for me. Russell Morris is appearing at The Venue on Friday 13 June 2014. Get your tickets online at www.ticketek.com.au from The Venue 719 Flinders Street Townsville or by calling 4724 2800.

STORY

EMOTIONALLY CHARGED CHOREOGRAPHY WILL COMBINE WITH POWERFUL LIVE MUSIC AND DIGITAL PROJECTIONS IN A PERFORMANCE UNLIKE ANYTHING SEEN IN TOWNSVILLE BEFORE. WORDS SUZANNE SCHMIDT MAIN IMAGE NAOMI LEE PHOTOGRAPHY

DANCENORTH’S new work-in-progress The Inside, due to premiere in Townsville in 2015, is a rare collaborative treat for choreographer Raewyn Hill, the artistic director of Dancenorth, and her creative team dramaturg Duncan Sarkies, musician and composer Eden Mulholland and digital projectionist Mariona Omedes. PHOTO: NAOMI LEE PHOTOGRAPHY

Normally created as individual parts in isolation, with the final product pieced together at the end, this dance work is being created together in one space at the same time and the creative energy in the studio has been electric. With Dancenorth’s trademark physicality, three dancers Erynne Mulholland, Alice Hinde and Andrew Searle are joined on stage with live music played by Eden Mulholland. Raewyn Hill

“It’s one of Dancenorth’s most ambitious projects to date, the digital environment needs to be built from scratch, with projections made for every moment of the work,” Raewyn said. While the themes are still a work in progress, the basic premise is one many families face. “I asked myself the question, what happens to a family when one member leaves and experiences trauma, and what happens to the family dynamic when that person is gone and how do they reintegrate once they return.

100 DUO MAGAZINE JUNE 2014 duomagazine.com.au

“That was the basic concept but within that there are different layers to the work, and we’ve used live music plus digital mapping to change the environment, all set in a house which you can see inside of, through the projections.” This collaboration was no chance meeting. “As artists you’re always aware of who is around and creating work and it’s about assembling the right combination of people for each project. I’ve been working with Duncan on and off over a period of 10 years,” Raewyn said. “Duncan is a prolific writer, playwright, director and performer and as a dramaturg he guides me with character development that enables me to add a new layer and depth to the storyline. “As a former dancer Eden knows dance incredibly well. He has been writing music for dance for 15 years so I was aware of his work however this has been our first opportunity to work together. It’s been unbelievable to have Eden in this space; this is the first time I’ve ever created something with a composer in the studio at the same time as we are making the dance. Usually we are working remotely through email or Skype”.

“WHEN YOU’RE MAKING SOMETHING FROM NOTHING EVERY DAY YOU ARE PUSHING YOUR OWN LIMITS. DANCENORTH ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, RAEWYN HILL

Eden is a multi-instrumentalist, composer for film and theatre and former frontman of New Zealand band Motorcade. His songs disregard genre boundaries and ride that fine line between pop and poignancy. Eden and his band have been touring Australia supporting the legendary David Bridie (Not Drowning, Waving). Later this year Eden sets off to perform and record his new LP in New York and LA. He was thrilled to be invited to participate in The Inside. “Raewyn asked me and it was a great surprise,” Eden said. “I’m really happy to be a part of it. I’ve never worked in the studio with Raewyn before and I was initially a bit nervous but we hit our stride pretty quickly.

Eden Mulholland

“For me, it’s about creating texture to build a sonic environment for the dancers to perform in. We quickly got to a place where we could be bold and where the environment felt safe to experiment.” Raewyn agreed. “When you’re making something from nothing every day you are pushing your own limits. There is a lot of expectation and you can feel very vulnerable in the studio. There is a lot of trust in the room, we communicate well and respect each other a great deal.

“I usually work in a quiet space, so I knew it was going to be quite challenging for me to embrace the sound of having Eden in the room playing live. It has really pushed me in terms of what I’ve been creating, as there is no escaping it, no just reaching for the pause button!”. With up to 20 or more layers of sound at any one time, including various instruments, loops, effects and vocals, music plays a big part in The Inside. “Eden will be playing live and he makes the sound of 10 people – it’s like we have a full band playing in the theatre,” Raewyn said. The Inside will take many more months to come to fruition with a dance of this size usually taking around two years to craft. “With the other artistic commitments of those involved, as well as delivering a full touring program for Dancenorth each year, it takes a long time to premiere new work,” Raewyn said. Audiences will get a taste of Raewyn’s choreography later this year at the premiere of another new work in the season – Threefold: Webber/ Hill/ Huang Yi – to run at the School of Arts Theatre, the home of Dancenorth, from August 7-10.

MOO’S MAGIC GROOVIN THE MOO DELIGHTED SPELLBOUND CROWDS LAST MONTH WITH ITS UNIQUE MAGIC AND ENERGY.

“…YOU GET LOST IN THE SONG; COMPLETELY UNDER THE SPELL OF THE MUSIC…”

YOU KNOW THE FEELING. The starting beat to your favourite song begins to play. You slowly forget the email you have to send, the bill you have to pay and the person who let you down, and you get lost in the song; completely under the spell of the music. A music festival harnesses the magic of that moment and takes it to another level. The annual Groovin the Moo festival has seen great success touring regional areas of Australia, igniting that unique energy and magic in crowds of 16,000 or more. With the blue skies and luminous green growth typical of autumn in the tropics, Townsville’s Murray Sports Complex came alive on Sunday May 4th, marking the city’s seventh year of joining the Groovin the Moo circuit. Boasting an artist line-up to delight all music tastes, and scores of food and drink to satisfy taste buds, this year’s festival flaunted a prime set-up. Local acts The Lost Boys and Atticus Beats kicked off the event, showcasing the festival-worthy talent being bred in regional areas across Australia. Other musical highlights included Triple J Top 100 favourite Vance Joy performing hit Riptide, Peking Duck firing up the crowd with High, Dizzee Rascal sending the crowd Bonkers with his char ttopping classics and Disclosure closing the festival with a stellar set that was anything but White Noise. Byron Bay personality Tommy Franklin lead the way in colourful interpretations of dance and dress, while festival-goers sported creative costumes, onesies, and boho chic attire. The unique energy of the festival was its greatest success once again, despite a chill in the air as the North Queensland sun went down under a pink sky. With increasingly better artist line-ups, crowds will continue to flock to Groovin the Moo, just for a taste of those magical moments with music, and to surrender to the spell of ‘that’ song.

ARTICULATE

DUO MAGAZINE IS PROUD TO PARTNER WITH PERC TUCKER REGIONAL GALLERY AND SHANE FITZGERALD, MANAGER GALLERY SERVICES, TOWNSVILLE CITY COUNCIL, IN A SERIES THAT DISCUSSES CURRENT TRENDS, MUSINGS AND INSIGHTS INTO CONTEMPORARY VISUAL ARTS.

TOWNSVILLE’S CBD WILL SOON SEE A GIANT AWAKEN. CITY LANE AND CITY ARCADE, a project undertaken by Lancini Property and Development, is set to provide our city centre with an injection of not only new retail options, but a vibrant lifestyle destination and community meeting point. The development parallels the ethos of the laneways and inner city culture of a number of Australia’s metropolitan centres, and represents a coming of age for our CBD, with art at its heart. City Lane features notable street art projects that are in-keeping with the development’s urban character, including a revolving exhibition space for Townsville’s own street artists. It can’t be denied however that the mammoth work underpinning all of the activity is a significant mural delivered by Fintan Magee; a giant of the street art scene, and a man accustomed to painting giant figures. It’s pleasing that Gallery Services and Townsville City Council have been able to assist through advice and guidance in this commission process, which has been solely funded by Lancini Property and Development. Born in Lismore NSW, Fintan Magee moved to Brisbane as a child and soaked up Brisbane’s street art culture in his teens. His current work is a unique blend of impressively rendered surreal and figurative imagery. His paintings respond to the urban environment in which they are created, and prompt contemplation from viewers on a raft of complex issues ranging from waste, consumption, loss and transition. Far from being confrontational statements however, Magee’s works remain influenced by children’s book illustrations and as such maintain a softness that ensures a broad affection for his work.

Magee – who has exhibited throughout Australia and been selected as a finalist for the Prometheus, Churchie and Lethbridge art prizes – is vastly experienced. The opportunities that were presented in May for the community to hear Magee provide an artist talk, and for select local street artists to have worked with him in the development of their own practices, were important steps in the evolution of Townsville’s own burgeoning street art scene. The work Magee has produced for City Lane draws directly from his experiences during the Brisbane Floods, and childhood nostalgia around iconic Queenslander architecture. The artist states, “[it] pays homage to the tough, generous, resilient, and helpful nature of all Queenslanders during times of flood and hardship. The work also comments on the need for unity in times of disaster and honours our unique architecture.” It’s a fitting theme for an artwork to adorn City Lane; a brand new meeting space for Townsville that builds on the vibrancy returning to the CBD, while honouring the existing architecture of the historic building. Significantly, the work also offers the opportunity for Townsville residents to appreciate the true merits of street art. Through the revolving outdoor exhibition space and opportunity to work alongside Fintan, the projects developed in City Lane have already positively engaged local artists – including youth-at-risk – underlining the inherent social value of the medium. Recently, the successes of Gallery Services projects such as Brick by Brick, and more recently The Percivals, have demonstrated the Townsville community’s appreciation

for cultural initiatives, and legalised street art activity also holds great untapped potential as a cultural tourism and economic driver in our region. For evidence of this potential, one need not look any further than Melbourne, which is considered a world leader in the field. The plethora of artwork created by passionate and skilled artists within Melbourne’s city centre prompted the creation of guided laneway tours for tourists, and was the cornerstone of Melbourne’s recent ‘Get lost in Melbourne’s laneways’ tourism advertisements. Lancini Property and Development’s City Lane development and their commissioning of Fintan Magee represented the awakening of one giant in Townsville. For the city’s development, I hope this particular giant will see many more friends grow in the future.

PÂTÉS DE VOLAILLE OU DE LAPIN CHICKEN PIE WITH 30 CLOVES OF GARLIC Serve hot, as a main course

Serves 6 Preparation time 45 minutes Cooking time 2 hours 30 minutes

500g pâte feuilletée, or 2 packets puff pastry 1 free-range chicken, ready to cook 2 bay leaves 4 sage leaves 2 sprigs rosemary 2 sprigs thyme 1 bunch basil 33 garlic cloves 100ml olive oil 200ml muscat wine 2 eggs Fine sea salt, cracked black pepper

CHICKEN-GARLIC FILLING Season the chicken on all sides. In a flameproof casserole dish, gently sauté 30 whole cloves of garlic in the olive oil, place the chicken on top, add the herbs, season and moisten with the muscat. Cover with a lid and bake for 2 hours at 180°C. Add a little water if necessary during cooking so the chicken doesn’t stick. Remove all the bones from the chicken, the meat should come off easily by itself. Crush the garlic cloves and remove the skin to get the pulp. Add the cooking juices and herbs to the pulp and chicken. Coarsely chop everything with a knife and adjust the seasoning. Lightly beat the eggs. Finely slice the remaining 3 garlic cloves.

ASSEMBLY AND COOKING Roll out half of the pastry dough and cut out 6 circles a little larger than the pie tins. Line the 6 pie tins with the pastry, allowing the edges to hang over the sides. Fill with the chicken-garlic mixture and glaze the edges with egg. Roll out the remaining pastry dough and cut out another 6 rounds. Cover each small pie. Seal the 2 rounds of pastry dough together by pinching the edges, glaze the top of the pie and scatter with slivers of garlic. Bake at 180°C for 30 minutes.

MAKING MUSIC WITH STRINGS AND WOOD

MAKE YOUR OWN HAND CRAFTED UKULELE ON THE WEEKENDS WORDS LEILANI WATERS PHOTOGRAPHY MEGAN MARANO KERSH

Joel Dubbeld is a man who has a passion for woodwork and the knowledge to match. He began working with Kingfisher Furniture in 1998, and took over the management from the previous owners in 2003.

“YOU CAN GO DOWN TO A MUSIC SHOP AND PICK UP A UKULELE FOR A LOT CHEAPER, BUT IT’S MORE TO DO WITH QUALITY AND THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE THAN ANYTHING ELSE.”

In June 2013 Alan Hamley, a local luthier and guitar teacher, with the idea of creating ukulele-building courses, contacted Joel. “Alan approached me because he saw an opportunity in Townsville for building ukuleles. He’s a specialist in the music side of things, and I’m a specialist in the woodworking side of things so it’s a really good mix. Luthiery is the timber work and the sound side of things so it adds another sense to my trade as a cabinet maker.” Since then they have successfully completed four five-week courses, with the most recent finishing in May this year. “We’ve had heaps of interest. We run five by five hour sessions on consecutive Saturday mornings. So the biggest challenge has been getting people with that portion of free time each Saturday.”

The course costs $750 inclusive of the end product that is a ukulele that people involved in the workshop handcraft themselves from scratch. “We’ve been building concert size, mid sized ukuleles, I want to offer building soprano which is smaller and tenor which is bigger.” Traditionally ukuleles as Hawaiian Instruments are made from Koa, a recognized Hawaiian timber. “Koa is actually an Acacia wood which is very JOEL DUBBELD similar to our Australian Black wood, so we use Australian Black Wood or black our back and sides and we Lindsay Orchardwattle & Colinfor Krogh use a different species on the top.”

130 DUO MAGAZINE JUNE 2014 duomagazine.com.au

“You can go down to a music shop and pick up a ukulele for a lot cheaper, but it’s more to do with quality and the whole experience than anything else. More often than not the people who are building the ukuleles have little experience with the woodworking side of things. So when they see them coming together it’s really exciting.” Joel says the aim is to continue to provide a quality of learning and product to make the experience enjoyable for all participants. “The hardest thing is to streamline the courses, to make sure we get consistent quality and a lot of that is to do with good preparation, just making sure that beginners can confidently put a ukulele together and come up with a world class product.” “Building ukulele’s isn’t necessarily challenging. Wood work in general isn’t challenging it’s just a series of steps. The most rewarding part is when you string them up and you play them, that’s the rewarding thing because the sound is just amazing,” Joel said. “We’re very particular when it comes to the teaching, we won’t let anything go wrong.” To check out just how good the quality of ukulele the workshop is producing you can drop into Kingfisher furniture, maybe have a play and see if you can be inspired to build your own. The next workshop is scheduled to happen in August/September, to get involved or find out more information you can contact Kingfisher Furniture on 4721 5066.
