IN CHARGE:
WAYNE BROWN GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO PARK DRIVE FOR JUST OUR FIFTH LEAGUE GAME OF THE SEASON. I WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO MARK AND HIS TILBURY TEAM, ALONG WITH THEIR SUPPORTERS AND TODAY’S MATCH OFFICIALS.
Well, what another amazing week for this football club as we progressed to the First Round of the FA Cup. I thought we were solid on Saturday against Haringey and we restricted a side with great quality to very few chances. I only remember Ben having one real save to make and that takes a collective, group effort and the lads should be very proud themselves. If I am honest, it was a relief when Sham’s [Shomari Barnwell] penalty went in on Saturday, we played really well and created a great amount of chances, and potentially we should have won by more than the one goal. Personally, I am chuffed for Sham. He has had to remain patient over the last few weeks and I understand that people at this level want to play football, however his attitude has been first class whilst he has been out of the team. It is important that when players come off the bench, they are able to make a positive impact and Sham did that and more on Saturday. I think we have matched the efforts of last year’s FA Cup run, when you take in to account the circumstances we faced at the

start of the season. At our first pre-season training session, we had 42 players present. All of the credit should go to the team, they have worked superbly well in a brand new environment, with a new management team who like to do things in a certain way. Their attitude from day one has been extremely impressive and I am sure they enjoyed Monday night’s cup draw. On to tonight’s match and we welcome a Tilbury side who are currently top of the table. Mark has managed to keep the majority of his team from last season together, who were very impressive and that I am sure is a big benefit to him and his team. They do what they do very well and for sure, we are expecting a tough and physical encounter. Despite an attendance of just 400, the noise and support we received on Saturday against Haringey was superb. It means so much to me, the management team and our players. Please keep it up and enjoy the game! Enjoy the game, Wayne

SATURDAY 24TH OCTOBER | EMIRATES FA CUP FOURTH ROUND QUALIFYING | ATT: 382
Wayne Brown’s men produced another cup upset to secure their place in the First Round of the Emirates FA Cup for a second successive season. Jammers boss Brown named the same starting eleven that overcame Braintree Town in the last round of the competition. Haringey visited Park Drive in their first away game in the FA Cup for over two years, Laste Dombaxe was named in the visitors starting eleven after departing the Jammers in the summer of 2020.

Despite the difference in leagues between the two sides, it was the home side who started the brighter of the two sides, creating the best opportunities in an evenly contested opening fifteen minutes. Hamza Kaid had the first effort of the match, however his effort curled over the cross bar. Scott Kemp was the next to try his luck, however his effort ended in similar fashion to Kaid, has it went over the bar. Maldon shot-stopped, Ben McNamara made his first save of the contest after 20 minutes as he was on-hand to smartly deny Scott Mitchell.
Five minutes later, the home should have been in front. Smart play down the left hand from Andre Hasanally allowed him space to deliver a delicious cross in to the penalty box, on to the head of midfielder, Bradley McClenaghan, however McClenaghan planted his header wide, wasting a golden opportunity. The Jammers continued to presson for the first goal of the game, with Adam Vyse having the last chance of the half, as his shot from an uncontested drop-ball forced visiting Goalkeeper, Jonathan Miles in to his first save. Encouraged by their first half performance, the Jammers continued in the same way, dominating last proportions of possession, whilst looking solid in defence. In truth, both sides struggled to break each other down and create chances with both defences looking extremely strong. 10 minutes in to the second half and Haringey were fortunate to keep eleven men on the pitch, after an altercation inside their penalty area, resulted with Vyse and defender, Rakim Richards on the floor but the Referee was unsighted as he missed Richards stamp on the torso of Vyse. With thirty minutes left on the clock, Brown made his first change of the afternoon, with Shomari Barnwell replacing striker, Vyse. Barnwell was straight in to action and almost scored the games opening goal. Smart play from Scott Kemp on the right-hand side of midfield was followed by a cross in to the box, Barnwell
produced an audacious flick which goalkeeper, Miles was able to make a splendid save, to parry the ball just wide, however the Referee awarded a goal-kick. Maldon were forced in to a second change with 17 minutes left, as Sam Coombes was withdrawn through injury and replaced by Aaron William-Bushell. Moving in to the last ten minutes, it was Maldon who remained the most dangerous with Haringey yet to force McNamara in to a second half save. Captain, Martyn Stokes had a free-header at the back post, however lost his footing on what was a slippery surface, as his header went wide of the goal, to the relief of the Haringey defence. With two minutes left on the clock, the home side awarded with a penalty after a hand-ball inside the penalty area from visiting defender, Scott Mitchell... Substitute, Shomari Barnwell grabbed the ball and had the chance to make himself a hero. Grinning with confidence, Barnwell, off of a short run up, bent his spot-kick in to the top corner, to give his side the lead with just minutes to play. With six additional minutes awarded by the Referee, the Maldon defence, led by the impressive Stokes, stood tall to secure the clubs place in the First Round of the Emirates FA Cup for second successive season.

MALDON & TIPTREE vs TILBURY
Tilbury F.C. now have concrete proof that they were formed in 1889, and competed in the Gravesend League from 1889/1890. With the Docks being the only employer of any size in the area, all the Players and Officials of the Club were Dockers, hence the adoption of the nickname, “The Dockers”, which still stands today. The aim of the Club was to gain success at Junior level via the Essex Junior Cup, and thereby to eventually bring Senior Level Football to the Town. Tilbury soon made a name at the Junior level, with successive League championships, and an appearance in the Final of the Junior Cup in 1903/04, where they were defeated after a replay by Chelmsford Arc Works. It was to be another 5 years before they reached the Final again, in 1908/09, but this time they carried off the Trophy by defeating the County’s oldest club, Saffron Walden Town. However, at this stage, support for the club was poor. Only a couple of miles down the road, Grays Athletic
were now playing in Senior ranks, and Grays Thurrock United were playing Professionally in the Southern League. Most local fans were going to these clubs, and finances for Tilbury were very tight. At the end of the 1910/11 season, the club also lost its home ground, and the Committee decided that the club should take a break from playing while it sought a new home base. The intended short break stretched to three seasons, and was then further extended by the outbreak of the First World War, in 1914. As a result, it was not until 1919/20 that Tilbury were able to resume, this time in the South Essex League. They became Champions of that League in 1921/22, and were again a force in the County Junior ranks. The big push for advancement into Senior ranks came in 1924/25. The Title was again captured, and so was the Essex Junior Cup. As a result, in the following season, Tilbury were invited to enter the Essex Senior Cup instead, which they accepted, as they realised that some good results would really aid their cause.
In 1926/27, Tilbury reached the 3rd Round of the Cup, the first Junior side to do so, and also became the first Junior club to knock a Senior club out of the Cup, when they played superbly to defeat the mighty Walthamstow Avenue 3-2. During the Summer, they were granted Senior status by the Essex F.A. Disaster almost struck however. Application was made to several Leagues but, one by one, they were all rejected, and it looked as though Tilbury were doomed. At the very last moment, the Kent League stepped in and offered them a place, which was eagerly accepted. With Tilbury remaining as one of only 5 Amateur clubs in a Professional competition, it was no surprise that they found it tough going on the field of play. Off the field, however, the 4 seasons spent in the Kent League were a success. Tilbury enjoyed their time in the League and made many friends and contacts. It was an off-field matter, though, that led to them eventually leaving the competition. The League had expanded in size greatly since Tilbury joined, and added to the difficulty of continually crossing the Thames was the end of season fixture congestion. This meant a great many midweek matches and, with no Floodlights in those days, those games had to kick off at 4.30pm, and Tilbury nearly always had to field weakened teams due to players’ work commitments. At the end of the 1930/31 season, the Committee very reluctantly took the decision that the club would have to move on. They made an application to join the London League, one of those that had rejected them 4 years earlier, and this time were accepted. Tilbury stayed in the London League until 1939, when the outbreak of the Second World War led to the disbandment of most Senior Leagues. During that spell, they
were twice 4th in the table, and once reached the League Cup Final, but were mostly to be found in the bottom half of the League Table. In September 1939, all Football was forced to return to a more local basis, due to Travel restrictions and Fuel rationing. Along with 9 other local clubs, Tilbury formed the War Time South Essex Combination. They completed the 1939/40 season in this League, but at the end of that campaign were forced to disband for the duration, when their ground was commandeered by the Army, as a site for the Anti-Aircraft Guns brought in to protect the Docks. Tilbury resumed in the London League in 1946/47, and then on a new home ground, the present Chadfields in 1947/48, and embarked upon a four season spell of much success and National recognition. They reached 2 successive Essex Senior Cup Finals, were 3 times League Runners Up, and were desperately unlucky to be knocked out of the F.A. Amateur Cup at the Quarter Final stage, when reduced to 9 fit men through injury. The proudest moment, though, came in the F.A. Cup. In 1949/50, Tilbury fought their way through to the 1st Round Proper, eventually going down 0-4 away to a Notts County side led by the legendary England centre forward Tommy Lawton. In the previous round replay, at home to Gorleston, a crowd of 5,500 had packed into St. Chad’s Road, and that is still the official Ground Record. The proceeds from this Cup run were used, a few years later, to buy the Freehold to the 13 acre site that the Ground stands on. In 1950/51 Tilbury moved into the Corinthian League. Apart from one League Cup Final, this was to be a barren 7 year spell, and at the end of that time they returned to the London League. The move into
the Corinthian ranks had coincided with the gradual break up of the successful but ageing post-War side. The move back to the London League now coincided with the coming together of an extremely talented bunch of local young players that brought great success in the coming seasons. In 1957/58, Tilbury finished 3rd in the London League, but in each of the next 4 campaigns were the undisputed Champions. On 3 occasions they also captured the League Cup. Also, in 1960/61, the Essex Senior Cup was won for the first time, when Walthamstow Avenue were beaten 4-1 (aet) in the Final, just 3 weeks after they had won the Amateur Cup at Wembley. 1962/63 saw Tilbury move into the Delphian League. This was to be the Winter of the “Big Freeze”, which almost totally disrupted all Sport throughout the Country for a period of almost 3 months. This was to coincide with that League’s last ever season. In 1963/64, that League joined the expanded Athenian League set up, becoming the bottom Division of a 3 Division set up. The Athenian League being the Premier Division, the Corinthian League being Division One and the Delphian, Division Two. Tilbury were inaugural Champions of Division Two, also winning the Essex Senior Cup again. 5 seasons later, they completed the climb to the Premier Division, by winning the Division One championship. 5 seasons were spent in the Athenian Premier Division before, in 1973/74, they joined the newly formed Isthmian League Division Two, which was later re-named Division One. In 1974/75, they became the first ever winners of the Isthmian League Cup, and 12 months later were the Division One Champions. 5th place in their first Premier Division season was the best Tilbury could achieve

in their 5 season stay, before being relegated back to Division One. However, during that spell, in 1977/78, Tilbury enjoyed a remarkable run in the F.A. Cup, as they started in the Preliminary Round and fought their way right through to the 3rd Round Proper, before going down 0-4 away to Stoke City. The storm clouds were already forming though, and just 2 seasons later relegation followed, amid a financial crisis so severe that the Club almost died. Since then, Tilbury have found things tough. They have suffered relegation on several occasions, but have mostly bounced back fairly quickly, but the successes of previous years have never been re-captured. In 2004/05, Tilbury finished their one season in the Southern League Division One East in rock bottom position, and were relegated to the Essex Senior League. They bounced back immediately, and earned a return to Isthmian ranks, and have managed to remain there since. The past 2 seasons were moderately successful, with two 11th place finishes in the League, and in 2008/09 Tilbury won the Isthmian League Cup and the East Anglian Cup, these were their first Trophies in 30 years. 2010/2011, with a new Manager in Paul Vaughan, and a tie-up with South Essex College Academy, saw the Club hoping to build for the future. With an inexperienced squad, the first half of the campaign was a real struggle, and by Xmas Tilbury were in real danger of relegation. However, as he gained experience, Vaughan gradually rebuilt and reinforced his squad, and the 2nd half of the campaign saw a run of results that steered the Club to safety well before the end of the season.
2011/12 saw Tilbury greatly exceed their expectations, as Vaughan’s squad stayed in and around the promotion race all season, clinching a play-off place with a game to spare. Sadly, though, it ended in extra time defeat against Needham Market. Success spread through the club as well, with the newly formed Reserves, comprised mainly of players under 21 years old, coming second in the Essex Senior Reserve League, and winning the League Cup. Unfortunately, this level could not be maintained over the next few seasons, as Tilbury continually lost some of their better players to higher level clubs, and Vaughan was continually having to rebuild his squad. The Club’s Academy proved its worth in this respect, as Tilbury still managed to finish in a respectable position. In October 2014, Paul Vaughan stepped down as Manager, and the Club acted quickly to appoint player Gary Henty as the new boss, and he acted quickly to appoint former Tilbury player Danny Smith as his assistant and another ex-”Docker” George Young as Coach. Tilbury finished that season in a comfortable lower mid-table position, but showed great improvement in 2015/16, at one time being as high as 5th, on the back of a very long unbeaten run. This included good runs in both the Essex Senior Cup and F.A. Trophy, with no fewer than 3 National League sides being defeated. However, as the season entered its final few weeks, their poor disciplinary record came back to bite them, with player suspensions taking their toll leading to a fall down the Table to 11th. That pattern was repeated in 2016/17. The first half of the season saw Tilbury in or just below the Play-Off places, but in the second half of the campaign a
dramatic loss of form of just 3 wins from 22 games saw them plummet down as low as 17th. The season was rescued in the final month, in which Tilbury went unbeaten, winning three and drawing two of the final five League matches, climbing back up to a respectable 12th position. On the cup front, Tilbury had a fine run through to the Semi-Final of the Essex Senior Cup, before going down narrowly to National South side East Thurrock United. Unfortunately, Tilbury suffered a terrible run of results in October of 2017. A heavy defeat in the F.A. Trophy brought about the resignations of manager and assistant, Gary Henty & Danny Smith, plus coach George Young. Once again, the Club turned to a former player to take over. Joe Keith returned to the club and brought in a few new signings over the next few weeks, and guided the club to a safe final position. However, this run could not be maintained, and in October of the next season, with the Club lying second from bottom, the Management Team was changed again. Marc Harrison, a former Under 16 side Manager at Tilbury, had enjoyed a very successful spell with Basildon United, and now returned to Chadfields, bringing Liam Wallace with him as his Assistant. Making several new signings, they immediately brought about a big improvement, and took the club right up to 7th place, before a final day defeat away to the Division Champions sent them back to a final 10th place finish. In 2019/20 saw Harrison take Tilbury into the Play-Off positions, but their hopes were dashed when, in March, the League was declared Null & Void due to the Covid 19 Pandemic that had swept the World.

FA CUP DRAWS JAMMERS AT HOME TO MORECAMBE
JOE JOINS THE JAMMERS
Wayne Brown has added central defender, Joe Turpin to his Maldon & Tiptree squad. Turpin arrives at Park Drive from this evening’s visitors, Tilbury. Joe, 23, has already appeared six times for the Dockers this season, including their FA Cup defeat to Coggeshall Town, ruling him out of our FA Cup first round tie. The central defender is pictured during his time at Basildon United, where he featured before returning to Tilbury in March 2020, just before the season was prematurely ended as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Turpin made 31 appearances for the Bees during the 2019/20 season, but only appeared twice for Tilbury making a total of 33 appearances. Joe has also featured for Hashtag United and Hullbridge Sports in recent times. Everybody at the club welcomes Joe to Park Drive.
Maldon & Tiptree have been handed a home draw against League Two outfit Morecambe in the Emirates FA Cup First Round. The tie is due to be played on the weekend of November 7th, and fixture details will be released in due course.

MALDON & TIPTREE
CLUB HISTORY In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 2005-06 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share arrangement.

MALDON & TIPTREE vs TILBURY
In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the clubs last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs Joint-Manager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the
new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirtythree games and finishing with a win percentage of 49.12%.
At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. Disappointment came in the play-off final however when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who thenwent on to win the final,on penalties. After a disappointing end to the previous season, Terry Spillane oversaw more wholesale changes in the playing squad, including the departure of Assistant Manager, Jody Brown. Despite the changes, Maldon finished in ninth position with seventysix points, winning twenty-one games.
Mudmen and The Jammers available. The vote took place in January 2015 and was featured on National Radio station, TalkSport, with the The Jammers winning the vote with over 50% and being confirmed as the clubs new nickname. Following the completion of the 2014-15 season, the club linked with Colchester United and the two clubs formed close ties, which resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, ex-Leiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the playoff places by nine points.
More changes to the playing staff, resulted in poor start to the 201415 season, and the club parted ways with Spillane in September 2014, with Chairman, Ed Garty takeover as Caretaker Manager, for three games. At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points.
In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points.
During the 2014-15 season, Media Officer at the time, Richard Buckby ran a competition for supporters to vote for a club nickname, with the options The River Boys, The Marshmen, The
After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in
charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts. The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of the competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600 fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season. Following the disappointing end to the 2020-21 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of last season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid.
