G
ood afternoon everybody. I’d have loved to see Blundell Park packed to the rafters for today’s game - as it would be in normal circumstances because there’s no doubt that playing in front of our crowd would have given our lads a big lift. But fans or no fans, no one needs to tell me what this game means. It’s a local derby against our fierce rivals and we will be doing everything we can to bring some Christmas cheer to the supporters of Grimsby Town Football Club. Looking back at Tuesday night, I think it was one of the weirdest games I’ve ever seen. The ball has ended up in our net within 30 seconds of kick off - that seems to be the way things are going for us at the moment! After that, we took control of the game and managed to pull ourselves level right at the end of the first half through Ira Jackson. Honestly, I felt like we were going to kick on from there and go on and dominate the second half, like we did the first. However, that didn’t happen and I’m still shellshocked how we ended up losing that game 3-1. Their second was straight from a set play and third was a mistake from our goalie. Fair play to Southend, they showed some character to win the game but it concerns me how easily we let the game slip away from us. On the balance of play, there’s no way we deserved to lose. But we did and that’s life sometimes. I want our lads to play with confidence and I’m working hard to try and get them there. So all that’s left for me to say is let’s get behind our lads this afternoon and Up The Mighty Mariners! Ollie

IN THE SPOTLIGHT I
ra Jackson Jr should be full of confidence going into this afternoon’s local derby against Scunthorpe United.
Until last weekend, the 23-year-old had only made two brief substitute appearances in the EFL Trophy so far this season. However, just six minutes into his League debut against Mansfield he put The Mariners ahead and he was on the scoresheet again in midweek! If his last two performances are anything to go by, it looks like Jackson has picked up from where he left off last season with Folkestone Invicta. The striker scored 26 times in 36 appearances as Invicta challenged for the Isthmian Premier title. The previous season, Jackson was in equally impressive form for the Kent club, scoring seven times in just 15 appearances following his move from Sittingbourne FC who operate in the eight tier of English football pyramid. The versatile forward got his first opportunity in men’s football with Whitstable Town in 2015 before a short spell with Worthing prior to being snapped up by Dover Athletic. The National League club obviously saw great potential in Jackson but the youngster only made four appearances for The Whites during the 2016-17 campaign - instead spending a couple of months on loan at Margate where he found the back of the net four times in nine appearances. After three years playing semi-professionally for Leatherhead, Sittingbourne FC and Folkestone Invicta while studying for a degree, Jackson, who’s a devout Christian, turned professional in the summer after signing an initial two-year-deal with The Mariners.
CAREER:
Whitstable Town, Worthing, Dover Athletic, Margate (Loan), Leatherhead, Sittingbourne, Folkestone Invicta
Town fans will be hoping his rich vein of form in front of goal continues this afternoon and into the New Year.

ormally today’s game would be the biggest home match of the season for the fans and it is a real shame that they are still not allowed into Blundell Park. The atmosphere for these games is normally electric which in turn rubs off on the players and there is no doubt that even a restricted crowd would give the players a big lift.
We saw on Tuesday night that the Southend crowd definitely gave their team an advantage and apparently it was the same against Scunthorpe the previous Saturday. As much as we advocate the return of fans, it becomes a postcode lottery as to who can have them back which can’t be right. We would like to see the same rules for everybody, irrespective of Tier and we maintain that watching football is safer than many other activities even in Tier 3. Bizarrely, around 200 fans can now go and watch neighbours Cleethorpes Town! How can that be right? This has been a traumatic week off the pitch and it is important that some sort of stability is established as soon as possible. We have made our position clear on the Alex May issue and pleased that the board have declined the offer. We sincerely hope that now concludes any interest. We absolutely understand the frustration of fans at the moment and the desire for change from many. This is why last week we took the initiative to make contact with Tom Shutes to try and understand if we could help in any way with the long standing rumoured takeover. It is really important in our view that this is concluded one way or another very quickly as having it constantly in the background is unsettling for everybody. We are pleased to say our meeting was constructive and that subsequently there has been a meeting between Tom Shutes and chairman Philip Day which as we understand it was also constructive. We will continue to help wherever we can with this, it needs to either be completed or draw a line under it and move on. Finally we were very proud this week to be involved in the handover of donations made by fans and the club of food for the Rock Foundation foodbank, Toys for Women’s Aid and St Andrews Hospice, and Pet goods for Ark animal rescue. More than any other year, this will make such a difference to local people who are in desperate need of help. The response to the appeal was the best yet and we would like to thank everyone who donated. Enjoy the game. UTM The Mariners Trust Board

MACCA CAPTAIN’S COLUMN:
Afternoon everyone.
I don’t think it would be unfair to say this is our biggest game of the season for many reasons. Fans or no fans, as players we have to make sure we leave absolutely everything on the pitch today. We have no excuses as players. We haven’t played well enough as individuals or collectively. However, if there is a day to put it right, it’s derby day! Of course, the atmosphere won’t be anything like it was in our last game preCovid (our fans were amazing that day
back in March) but we know a win will go a long, long way to helping put a smile back on a few faces. We know you’ll be supporting us from wherever you watch/ listen to the game and please be assured whatever happens we will give it everything we have until that last kick. UTM Macca

02. JORDAN CLARKE
Since Jordan Clarke returned to The Iron’s defence, our local rivals appear to have turned the corner. Clarke has featured five times since mid November and has been on the winning side on four occasions. The right back even popped up with a 91stminute winner in Tuesday night’s game against Barrow. Despite the recent success, it was actually an inauspicious start to the new season for the Scunthorpe United skipper. He was released by the club at the end of 2019/20 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but returned to sign a new one-year deal ahead of the new season. The 29-year-old hails from Coventry and made 144 appearances for his hometown club before joining Scunthorpe in 2015. Prior to his release, Clarke had already clocked up more than 150 appearances for The Iron during a five year spell in North Lincolnshire. Career: Coventry City, Yeovil Town (Loan).
MIDFIELDER
08. ALEX GILLIEAD
FORWARD
11. ABO EISA
Alex Gilliead is the kind of attacking midfielder that can really make things happen for The Iron. The 24-year-old scored six in 42 appearances last term and was undoubtedly one of Scunthorpe’s stand-out performers. The winger moved to Glanford Park in the summer of 2019 following a season with Shrewsbury Town in League One where he scored three times in 35 appearances. Prior to his move to Shropshire, Gilliead had been with Newcastle United since he was 16-year-old, but he failed to make a first team appearance during his six years with The Magpies. Instead, the former England youth international gained experience on loan at Carlisle United, Luton Town and Bradford City where he made 57 appearances over two spells. Gilliead has the potential to give the Mariners defence a real headache this afternoon.
With The Iron without the injured Kevin van Veen this afternoon, they will be looking to Abo Eisa to continue his recent goalscoring form. The 24-year-old has found the back of the net four times this season, including one in their 2-1 victory against Barrow in midweek. The flying winger moved to Glanford Park in the summer of 2019 from Shrewsbury Town, teaming up with his former boss Paul Hurst. He scored nine times in 36 appearances and was awarded with the club’s 12th Man player of the season honour. Eisa spent three years in non league before joining The Shrews in 2018. He scored 17 in 53 appearances for Uxbridge and 12 in 24 for Wealdstone before the Sudanese forward turned professional. During his one season with Shrewsbury, he spent three months on loan at Colchester United.
Career: Newcastle United, Carlisle (Loan), Luton Town (Loan), Bradford (Loan), Bradford (Loan).
Career: Uxbridge, Wealdstone, Shrewsbury Town, Colchester United (Loan).

OF THE BEST
I am definitely NOT going to include Town winning 7-1 against the Iron in September 1966.
vs SCUNTHORPE UNITED By John Kirk
record for any Town manager! He was the temporary boss between Tom Casey and John Newman, but in his seven games, the Mariners won four and drew one. Some record, that! The Old Showground had one of the most modern stands in the game at the time, with the roof going “the wrong way” according to normal standards at the time. The ground had been more traditional when Town used it as their home ground during World War II.
TOWN 3-2 SCUNTHORPE & SCUNTHORPE 1-3 TOWN CHRISTMAS DAY AND BOXING DAY 1951
Bill Shankly gave Mariners fans something to cheer about when he took the place of Santa and in the first ever meeting in the league, Town won at Blundell Park by the odd goal in five. Billy Cairns, Jim Bloomer senior (remember Jim Bloomer junior – his son, and Matt Bloomer his grandson?), and Jimmy Maddison were on the score sheet for Town in front of almost 20,000 fans. The very next day came the reverse fixture at the Old Showground, this time in front of almost 16,000. Bloomer scored twice and Billy Cairns added the third. Town won each of the first four games against our neighbours down the A18 with more than 40,000 in total watching the two games in the following season. Town’s four successive derby wins was followed by five defeats against Scunny.
SCUNTHORPE 0-2 TOWN 7TH MARCH 2020
Quickly skipping over the game-that-shall-not-bementioned, and ALL games between summer 1979 and summer 1988 – not one of which was a league match – we come to the bitter sweet last game we played between one another. Sweet because Town won, bitter because it was the last game of the season as football was stopped because of Covid. Charles Vernam and Luke Waterfall scored the goals – something neither will do today!
TOWN 0-1 SCUNTHORPE 2ND APRIL 1956 (GOOD FRIDAY)
Oh go on then, I’ll just give a very brief mention to THAT game!
TOWN 7-1 SCUNTHORPE 7TH SEPTEMBER 1966
Yes, I know this is a defeat but it’s worth noting that this was Town’s ONLY defeat in the final 17 matches of the promotion season, and anyway Town beat Scunthorpe on their own turf just three days later.
8,255 fans were there, and they had just eight minutes to wait before Matt Tees volleyed on the turn to crash the ball into the net – the photo of which has been on view across several publications in the past few weeks. Four minutes later, Green headed Jimmy Thompson’s cross past Ray Clemence. Green doubled his tally 12 minutes later when he nodded a Brian Hill cross into the Osmond goal. On 39 minutes, Brian Hill, Town’s left-winger took the ball past three desperate tackles and hammered the ball into the net with his right foot. Another two minutes afterwards and Hill took a free-kick which was headed away, back towards Hill who lashed the ball in again with his right boot. Half-time, and 5-0, but Town weren’t finished. On 54 minutes a Hill corner was headed home by an unmarked Rod Green, for his hat-trick. On the hour mark, Clemence miss-kicked the ball straight to Brian Hill, who accurately lobbed the ball into the unguarded net. That was the end of Town’s scoring as they took their foot off the pedal, and with seven minutes to go, Brian Bedford put away Scunthorpe’s consolation.
TOWN 1-1 SCUNTHORPE 25TH OCTOBER 1958
Purely personal choice. I was living in a village near Scunthorpe at the time, and reliant upon my Uncle George to take me to games. Happily, there was a special train put on for the game from Scunthorpe Station and so we travelled to Grimsby surrounded by Scunny’s finest! The game ended 1-1, with Tommy Briggs scoring Town’s goal. As all schoolboys at the time knew, Tommy had once been playing for Blackburn and he scored seven goals in one game which remarkably was the same number we… oh, I promised not to mention that!
SCUNTHORPE 1-3 TOWN 14TH MARCH 1959
Another personal milestone! My first ever away game, and the need to travel just eight miles to get there. Town won with Dick Conner, Ron Stockin and Ron Rafferty scoring our goals. Dick by the way holds the best
Two months later, Hill went to Huddersfield for £20,000, the following January Tees and Green went to Charlton for a combined fee of £23,000, the conquering heroes had been broken up and the rest of the late 1960s is Town history, and not a nice one. It should be remembered that Scunthorpe were playing no fewer than four teenagers in their defence, including Ray Clemence, and just two players with experience, whilst Town had the likes of Green, Tees, Hill, Harry Wainman, Graham Taylor, Ron Cockerill, and Keith Jobling to name a few. It was not just metaphorically men against boys...

CONNECTIONS:
JAMIE FORRESTER
Jamie Forrester spent a similar amount of time with both clubs but he will be better remembered by fans of The Iron for the role he played in their 1998/99 promotion season. After scoring for England Schoolboys against France in 1992, Forrester was signed by Auxerre. However, after just a year with the French club, the 16-year-old joined the newly crowned First Division champions Leeds United. The young striker hit 26 goals in 25 youth games for Leeds, including a spectacular overhead kick in the FA Youth Cup Final victory against Manchester United. Despite the early promise, Forrester only managed a handful of appearances in the Premier League for The Whites. Following a month on loan with Southend United, he joined Town on loan for the final two months of the 1994/95 season and scored once in the 3-1 win against Sunderland at Blundell Park. The Yorkshireman returned to Elland Road at the end of his spell but was allowed to join the Mariners permanently just a few months into the 1995/96 season. Forrester was a regular in attack during that season, as Town briefly flirted with promotion to the top flight. Although he was by no means prolific (five goals in 28 appearances), his battling qualities and willingness to run the channels endeared him to Brian Laws and the majority of Town fans. Injury and a loss of form limited Forrester to just 13 appearances the following campaign. Deemed surplus to requirements at Blundell Park, former Town boss Brian Laws persuaded the striker to drop down to Division Three to sign for The Iron in March 1997. The tireless striker, who was still only 23-yearsold at this point, became a real fans’ favourite at Glanford Park and his 23 goals in 1998/99 helped The Iron win promotion to Division Two. In a little over two years with Scunthorpe, he scored 37 goals in 101 appearances. Joining FC Utrecht on a Bosman in the summer of 1999, he appeared only once for the Dutch club before returning to England on loan with Walsall and later Northampton Town who he joined permanently. Forrester found the net regularly for The Cobblers (39 in 112) during three seasons at the Sixfields and went on to play for Hull City, Bristol Rovers and Lincoln City where he enjoyed another prolific period (30 in just 81). Following a season with Notts County, he dropped into non league and eventually hung up his boots in 2010 aged 36. Given that Forrester will be remembered as one of the lower league’s most prolific strikers of the 2000s, perhaps The Mariners let the former England Youth International leave Blundell Park a little too soon?

DIVIDED LOYALTIES Hannah Dawson explains what it was like growing up with a Dad who supported The Mariners and a mum who supported Scunthorpe United. When I was asked to write a piece for the Scunthorpe game, it brought back some wonderful memories and reminded me of life growing up with parents who support rival clubs.
When I was born, Dad made sure that there was only one team for me. I grew up in Caistor so really my loyalties could have gone either way, however it was a Grimsby pennant that hung on my cot and mum simply had to accept it!
Dad has been a Grimsby Town fan his whole life, and his parents before him, so I doubt anyone was expecting him to marry someone from the ‘dark side’! My mum and her family moved to the area when she was young, and for reasons unknown to me, she’s supported Scunthorpe United since then.
Mum always refers to my early childhood as the ‘brainwashing’ phase – I was my dad’s shadow, and we did absolutely everything together. We had little trips to Blundell Park where they let us sneak into the ground and have a look around. I got to meet Livvo and show him the special ‘Livvo’ doll that mum had knitted for me! Apparently, I cemented my loyalty to the club age four when I pointed to a poster in the Club Shop and said “Ivano Bonetti” in an angelic voice, making all the staff in there go “awwwww”. Now I have a daughter of my own, I know exactly how proud Dad must have felt at that moment in time. Home life was pretty normal, but there was always an underlying rivalry. I remember getting two pet fish and calling them ‘Quick Mick’ and ‘Mansaram’ after my two favourite players at the time. Of course, Mum had to go one better, so she taught our budgie to say “come on Scunny” to our disappointment. I hate to admit it, but what a great prank!
26
I GREW UP IN CAISTOR SO REALLY MY LOYALTIES COULD HAVE GONE EITHER WAY, HOWEVER IT WAS A GRIMSBY PENNANT THAT HUNG ON MY COT AND MUM SIMPLY HAD TO ACCEPT IT! As the years went by, I went to my first game with Dad, bought my first season ticket and eventually went to my first away game.
Several years ago, Dad talked mum into going to a Grimsby game with him and took her on a stadium tour before the match. He proudly showed me a photo of her with Liam Hearn and I can’t help but notice how happy she seemed to be! Let the conversion process begin… As I’ve got older, Mum realised I was a lost cause and that nothing would stop me supporting my beloved Grimsby Town alongside my dad. I have a wonderful town-supporting fiancé who I met when living in Lincoln – we were both looking to lift-share to town games and the rest is history! We now have a two-year-old daughter who has already been to her first game with us and we can’t wait to bring up a little Mariner. My daughter became the fourth generation of Mariners in our family and my grandma was over the moon when she was born. Before she sadly died last year, Grandma was straight talking, witty and not afraid to voice her opinions. Her opinions on Scunthorpe United were certainly not something I can write in this programme! I would like to take a moment to write a tribute to such a wonderful lady who walked with Dad, Dave Boylen and I around Blundell Park pitch on her 90th birthday to a standing ovation from the crowd. I know this was one of her favourite Grimsby Town memories and it will always be how I remember her.
In my lifetime, I don’t think I have ever seen Grimsby beat Scunthorpe at home, so I will keep everything crossed for a win today seeing as crowds can’t be there! My favourite away game at Glanford Park has to be the 2-1 win in November 2013. The build-up to the game was absolutely crazy – we got stuck in two miles of tailbacks on the motorway and it was a sight to behold when fans started bailing out of cars all along the road and running the remaining distance to the ground so as not to miss the game. I had travelled with Dad and his friend, so we left a driver behind and legged it!
Dave Boylen is an incredibly kind man who always looked after her at matches and even came to her funeral to pay his respects, which was a lovely surprise for us all. It is people like Dave that make supporting Grimsby Town so special and I feel proud to be part of the GTFC family.
I will never forget the moment I ran through into the stadium to Lenell John-Lewis firing the first goal in during the tenth minute and the whole stand erupting. Our arrival couldn’t have been better timed! We went on to win the game and I went home with a very bruised shin from overcelebrating the second goal.

Team s 70 of the
The 1970s, although plagued by soccer violence, skinheads and bovver boys, burst into colour during the early years of the decade. Glam Rock introduced itself through the likes of Sweet, Slade and T. Rex and they became the perfect background to that wonderful team of 1971/72. Get it on! One Saturday I was watching Marc Bolan and T. Rex at the Boston Glyderdrome, the following week it was Town v Lincoln, my first introduction to the Mariners. Life couldn’t get better! Putting together a favourite team is quite difficult when drawing on possibly 200 players, but some do stick out in the memory for a sort of rapport with fans or their skills, commitment and sense of humour.
Former Sing When We’re Fishing Cartoonist Jim Connor picks his favourite Grimsby Town XI of the 1970s.
a gentleman and always gave his all during the match impressing this fan enormously. Kev played a big part in the two promotions at the end of the decade and went on to establish the Mariners as a second division club in the early 80s. Left back Dave Booth was a player I admired greatly. Fancying myself as a bit of a left back in the seventies, I would watch Dave’s performances with great interest. He was a steady tough tackling player who would set moves going through an attacking run. Dave played for the Mariners from 1972 until 1979 when he retired through injury. He stayed at the club as assistant Manager and then Manager in the 80s. Incidentally, Dave was captain, the third skipper in the team so far.
Nigel Batch was a real character who played to the crowd. He would often have a joke with supporters behind the goal or in the corner section. He could take goal kicks with either foot and was an ever present between the sticks. He won two promotions and played in the cup runs at the end of the decade. Nigel was endeared by team mates but his rapport with the crowd makes him a firm favourite in my seventies team.
Central defender Clive Wiggington was a reliable player who was unique in the fact that he played in both Championship seasons at the beginning and end of the seventies. He replaced Graham “Basil” Rathbone in defence and made the position his own for the final run in of that superb season of 1971/72. Seven years later and Clive was tempted back to Town after a spell at other clubs. He formed a solid partnership with Dean Crombie gaining successive promotions culminating in the Championship season of 1979/80. I liked his no nonsense style bridging a successful period in the club’s history.
Right back Dave Worthington looked like a footballer; tanned, long haired, rolled down socks. He was the captain and led by example on and off the field, often attending supporters club functions which endeared him to most of the fans. Dave was another big character at the club making 293 appearances. He was a marauding defender who would join the attack notching the odd goal on the way. He was glamorous with his swashbuckling style making him the perfect captain.
Another local lad just edges Stuart Brace out of the team. Tony Ford was a quite remarkable player for the Mariners. I remember him having a kickabout with my friends when he was about 11 years old. We were a lot older but Tony would run rings around us on the “Spinney”. It was no surprise to see him make his debut for Town as a 16 year old. Tony became one of the most respected players in the English game. He was a fast, raiding winger scoring 16 goals in 1978/79. He was an intelligent guy who never lost sight of his roots. He plied his trade in a
Local lad Kevin Moore started as left back moving to central defence. His clean tackling and aerial presence saw him taking over as captain. My memory is of him running out at the start of the match jumping up and heading an imaginary ball. Kevin was something else and could have played at a higher level long before he actually signed for Southampton. Kevin was
30
period of racist abuse but came through to make 1,083 senior career appearances. Well loved by Town fans, Tony could play on either wing. Another gentleman, he was awarded the MBE in the 90s for his service to footbalI. Bobby Cumming probably figures on most Town fans’ favourite 11. He gave 100% commitment and was a very versatile player who could play in a variety of positions. Bobby was very courageous, taking no prisoners in the tackle. The matchday programme usually featured the opponents star man and you could guarantee Bob would introduce himself to them. Some famous encounters featured Allan Clarke and Norman Hunter of Barnsley (ex Leeds). He could play on either wing and his rampaging runs could cause mayhem in the opponents defence. He ended up as top goal scorer in the championship season of 1979/80. When I was involved in the fanzine, Bobby featured as a killer Robot that went on the rampage in a featured cartoon. When he first started at the club he struggled but eventually blossomed into an all time great. Joe Waters has legendary status at Grimsby Town FC. The fans contributed to his transfer fee in 1976 and his impact was immediate, driving the team on from midfield. He became captain, leading the team by example and covering every inch of the pitch. Joe’s close control quickly changed defence into attack. He led the team to two successive promotions winning Player of the Year in 1978/79. Joe could be relied upon to score goals especially from the penalty spot, I liked Joe and got to know him when he trained my local football team in midweek in the late 70s and early 80s. He was an excellent player for this club and deservedly scored in that final match of the 79/80 season, going on to lift the Championship trophy. Dave Boylen just shades Mike Hickman for the left midfield spot. He was only 5 feet 3 inches but had tremendous close control and the ability to send over inch perfect balls to the forwards. There was a rapport with the fans as Manager McMenemy took the players down dock at 5am to see how the fans made their living. This one incident was to win over the fans and Dave was to become a firm favourite, especially during the
1971/72 season when Town clinched the Fourth Division Championship. He always gave 100% commitment and effort which continued after his playing career ended with involvement in charity work, local politics and as an Ambassador to the football club. Personally I have been involved in cartoon projects with Dave and ex players over the years and he has always been extremely helpful. I still feel overawed when I meet him. Jack Lewis is my all-time favourite player. He was another player who looked the part; long haired, pop star looks and a fabulous mexican style moustache which could have banged in goals on its own. Jack was our George Best of the Fourth division, he was a maverick player that could be brilliant on his day. Originally used as a super sub, his crowd pleasing runs would elevate him to god like status. He was top scorer for three seasons in a row and during 1974/75 he scored 22 goals in 45 games. When he ran at a defence there was an expectation in the crowd that was exciting. I worshipped Jack, even painting one on my subbuteo players with a Zapata tache. I even named my son after him, this was true reverence for my soccer idol. Although I have such high acclaim for Matt Tees and his bravery, I have plumped for another local lad in Kevin Drinkell as my number one striker of the 1970s. Kevin had great control and a powerful shot, but he was also excellent in the air. He would meet crosses with bullet headers, outjumping defenders on the way. Kev had been Young Player of the Year in 1976/77 and his career was to progress as the 70s rolled on. He was to become top scorer in that wonderful Third division championship season of 1979/80 with 16 league goals. He was the most complete striker and you believed this Team and this striker could achieve great things. The last game of that season saw 19,000 witness the demolition of Sheffield United by 4 goals to nil and finish the season as worthy Champions. Kevin excelled scoring a hat trick against our Yorkshire rivals. The fans went wild invading the pitch and cheering on so many heroes. This was my favourite year as a Town fan even surpassing the later Wembley visits and promotions. The end of the 70s was a glorious period in Town’s history and as I said at the beginning of this article “Life couldn’t get better”. Glam Rock might have faded out but glamorous football was on the menu at Blundell Park.

WILFRED HANKINS R.I.P. Wilf was a lifelong Mariners fan. He first went to Blundell Park aged 10 and had supported them through good times and bad. When his lack of mobility forced him to stop attending, he still followed them through the papers and the radio. He said his favourite match was many years ago against Wolves... it was the only time his wife Vera went with him. Wilf sadly passed away on 1st December 2020, aged 96.
