G
ood evening everyone. The games are coming around quickly at the minute and we’re expecting another tough one tonight. Bradford City are currently in and around us and will be looking to follow up their win at the weekend. So we’re going to have to go about our business in a very determined and professional manner, just as we did on Saturday. I knew it wasn’t going to be the prettiest game but what was important was getting a result against Scunthorpe. We had to field a really young and inexperienced side and I thought everyone of them did brilliantly - so that’s something I’m particularly pleased about. I’m glad that we got the first goal because they missed a really good chance from a set piece just afterwards! It took a marvellous recovery tackle from Elliott Hewitt in the second half to prevent them from having a clear strike at goal. Hewy made the mistake and let one go under his foot, but the determination he showed to get back and make the tackle was absolutely brilliant. I was delighted with the clean sheet and I thought my goalkeeper, Luke Hendrie, Elliott Hewitt and Danny Preston were all magnificent but I want to say a special well done to Mattie Pollock, not just because of his goal, but because I thought he put in a really commanding performance at the back. In Luke Spokes and Harry Clifton, we had two very young lads in the middle of the park and at the top end of the pitch Ira Jackson Jr and Montel Gibson were both non-league strikers last season and they did a great job leading our attack. For me, that result at the weekend is just the start and let’s see what we do from here. We know that what we’ve done so far isn’t good enough but we have 28 games left and we’re going to try and put that right. Before I go, I’d like to wish every single supporter of Grimsby Town Football Club a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year. Ollie

MACCA CAPTAIN’S COLUMN:
Evening everyone.
I hope you all enjoyed a slightly better weekend than the last few weeks… because we all certainly did! However, as good as Saturday was, it’s already in the past. If we are going to be a successful team, we have to make sure of two things: we keep building on each performance/result and we move on to the next game quickly, because as much as it’s a cliche, it’s vital to make sure you’re relentless in your pursuit of success. Saturday will count for very little if we don’t back it up tonight.
On a side note, obviously it’s Christmas this week and I hope you all have a wonderful time. I think given the year we’ve had, we should all take a moment to think about the people on their own or less fortunate than ourselves, whilst also making sure we have a wonderful Christmas with our own loved ones and families. I really do hope and believe we can go into Christms feeling a lot better with a result tonight. UTM and Happy Christmas Macca

T
he matches keep coming thick and fast as we welcome tonight’s visitors Bradford City for this rearranged fixture. Both teams will be buoyed by their victories at the weekend which should lead to an entertaining game. Also, a warm welcome back to Billy Clarke following his move back to the Bantams in the summer.
MARINERS TRUST
The win against Scunthorpe was not only an important one in terms of the three points, but the manner of it was also impressive. The determination, passion and togetherness of the players was a joy to see and even more commendable given the absence of fans. As we know the atmosphere at these games is normally electric and it was such a shame that the fans missed out on what is usually their most anticipated game of the season. Thankfully the players played as if the ground was packed. More of the same tonight please. Whilst we have good news that the Premier League support has been agreed, and indeed, we have already received an initial payment of ÂŁ250,000, but as we understand it, the formula for the second element, which relates to lost revenue, is not yet confirmed. The EFL want this calculated on Leagues 1 and 2 combined whereas the League 2 clubs want the same split as the fixed payment (i.e 60% League 1, 40% League 2) and then each club takes an equal share. Hopefully, this can be sorted out quickly so that we know where we are ahead of the January transfer window.
THE DETERMINATION, PASSION AND TOGETHERNESS OF THE PLAYERS WAS A JOY TO SEE AND EVEN MORE COMMENDABLE GIVEN THE ABSENCE OF FANS
Not surprisingly there have been lots of questions incoming over last week or so, of which many are duplicated. As a result, we are setting up a Questions and Answers page on our website which we hope to complete shortly. This will act as a good reference point for fans and then if the question you would like to ask is not there then simply email us at enquiries@marinerstrust.co.uk.
We recognise many supporters will want an update on the potential takeover but having set up initial contact we feel it is now really important to give both parties the necessary time and space to reach a swift conclusion. Both sides have requested this, and we need to respect that. All we can really say at this early stage is that so far discussions have been constructive and both parties have approached them in a positive manner. Finally, for anyone wanting last minute Christmas ideas, the 1979/80 Champions and First Champions books are available at the Club Shop and Market stall tomorrow 10am - 4pm and again on Christmas Eve 10am -12 noon. We will also have them for sale in the Trust bar 4pm - 6pm tomorrow (Wednesday) and you can also collect your Club Shop online order or free calendar from us during these times. If possible, have a great Christmas and New Year and thanks for all your support during this strangest and most stressful of years. Hopefully next year will be much better for everyone. Keep the faith, UTM The Mariners Trust Board

FILIPE MORAIS
IN THE SPOTLIGHT N
ew signing Filipe Morais will be looking forward to facing his old employers this evening. The 35-year-old midfielder spent two and a half years with The Bantams, playing (and scoring) in their famous FA Cup victory against Chelsea in 2015. He signed an 18-month deal at Blundell Park at the start of the month and has added quality, discipline and experience to Ian Holloway’s youthful squad. Born in Portugal, Morais moved to North London when he was a child and joined the academy at Chelsea. While at Chelsea, the wideman won two Under 21 caps for Portugal and gained experience on loan at MK Dons, but he didn’t feature competitively for Jose Morinho’s blues. Despite being offered a new deal at Stamford Bridge, Morais moved to Millwall in search of first team football. However, his time in South London was short lived and after six month he went north of the border to sign for St Johnstone on loan. Morais remained in Scotland for three years and featured for Hibs, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and St Johnstone (again) in the SPL. In 2010, the midfielder joined Oldham Athletic and spent two seasons at Boundary Park. Later, Morais spent two years playing for Stevenage before signing for tonight’s visitors after Phil Parkinson brought him in on trial. He featured regularly in 2014-15 (along with James Hanson) and was part of the squad which famously reached the FA Cup quarter finals. Spells at Bolton Wanderers, Crawley Town and Oldham followed before Morais found his way to Blundell Park.
CAREER:
Chelsea, MK Dons (Loan), Millwall, St Johnstone (Loan), Hibernian, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, St Johnstone, Oldham Athletic, Stevenage, Bradford City, Bolton Wanderers, Crawley Town, Oldham Athletic (Loan).
If selected tonight, you’ll no doubt see the Portugese midfielder flying up and down Town’s right flank and delivering quality crosses into the penalty area.

TE A M OF THE
90s
Sam Lenthall picks his favourite Grimsby Town XI of the 1990s.
We’re all guilty of looking back on our formative years with rose (or, in this case, black and white) tinted specs on, and many would be quick to declare their era as ‘the best’; backed up by a multitude of personal, and no doubt heavily biased opinions. In a results based business like football however, there’s little space to stray from the simple stats and fortunately I was born in the right place, at the right time. My first visit to Blundell Park was on the 29th October 1991, I was five years old and the opponents were Tottenham Hotspur. We lost 0-3, but I wasn’t too disheartened… after all, I’d spent the entirety of the match playing football with a crushed up can at the bottom of the stand, prompting my Dad to declare he’d never take me and my brother to a match ever again. It was a couple of years later that I started going to matches with any degree of regularity and by that time the Mariners were a well-established second tier team, known for playing entertaining football and passing much bigger teams, with much bigger budgets, off the park. We’d go on to spend a total of 11 out of 12 seasons in what is now known as the Championship. As a child growing up in the 90’s, I wasn’t particularly aware that I was experiencing a golden era for the club. Second tier football being played at Blundell Park was as normal, and familiar to me as the sound of Corona – ‘Rhythm of The Night’ and ‘Let’s Get Ready to Rhumble’ by PJ & Duncan blurting out of the tinny PA system before every game, or the taste of a sausage roll purchased from the Pontoon kiosk as I sat perched on the cold rail at the front of the stand. A golden era, indeed! On the subject of familiarity, the relatively low turnover of players was undoubtedly vital in our success on the pitch, with all of Buckley’s men knowing their role inside out. Perhaps this factor makes picking a best team of the 90’s slightly easier than other eras, but that’s not to say there aren’t some massive managerial headaches to be had. The same can’t be said for the formation, mind. We WILL be playing 4-4-2!

DANNY COYNE Goalkeeper It almost feels wrong, seeing as he only signed for us in 1999, but how can I not choose him? The most incredible shot stopper I’ve seen play for Town, by far.
JOHN McDERMOTT Right Back One word: Legend.
GARY CROFT Left Back Gallimore will feel hard done by, but Crofty was classy as hell and a big player in the team that I first fell in love with. A player so good that recent Premier League champions Blackburn Rovers bought him from us, which felt massive at the time.
MARK LEVER Centre Back Ever dependable and the definition of no-nonsense, Lever played for us for the entirety of the 90’s and is one of the first names on the sheet for me.
PETER HANDYSIDE Centre Back The man with the greatest 90’s curtains haircut of all time. The ball playing ying to Mark Lever’s ‘get rid of it’ yang. Should’ve gone on to bigger and better things like Gary Croft did, in my opinion.
PAUL GROVES Centre Midfield The inclusion of Grovesy goes without saying. Allaction, box-to-box hero of a midfielder; just as likely to pop up in their box with that all important goal, as he was in our own with a last ditch challenge. A true leader on the pitch and he’s undoubtedly getting the captain’s armband too.
NEIL WOODS Striker Again, an incredibly tough choice, but he just pips Jack Lester to the post due to being one of my first heroes. The chant of “Ole Ole, Ole Ole Neil WOODS, WOODS, WOODS” would echo around the Pontoon stand during those early games I attended. Although he was a decent enough goalscorer, it was his football brain and hard working attitude that enamoured him to the Mariners faithful.
KEVIN DONOVAN Right Midfield An absolute revelation during the famous 97-98 season. Gary Childs had a shout, but Donovan the goal scoring winger just oozed class.
DAVE GILBERT Left Midfield The epitome of an old school winger, and one of the main cogs in the Buckley machine. He drifted past players for fun and had a hell of a cross on him.
ALAN POUTON Centre Midfield The hardest choice of them all for me. Burnett very nearly got it, I had a big affinity for Craig ‘Shakey’ Shakespeare, and unfortunately I was just a bit too young to catch Cockerill and Cunnington properly. Again, he only signed in ’99, but if Danny Coyne makes the team, then Pouts does too. The definition of a cult hero, with his untucked shirt, willingness to get stuck in and, above all, his unnecessary stepovers.
CLIVE MENDONCA Striker Super Clive. Where to start? Quite simply the greatest player to pull on the black and white shirt in my time and a hero to all that watched the Mariners in the 90’s. In an area as small as Grimsby/Cleethorpes, it’s not unusual to spot a Town player out and about but Super Clive was that one player that seemed like an untouchable celebrity with an air of mystique. I still rue the day I didn’t pluck up the courage to speak to him in the dentist’s waiting room, but I LOVED the fact that he went to the same dentist as me. Brilliant goalscorer, brilliant player and as cool as a cucumber.

08. CALLUM COOKE
Callum Cooke signed a two year-deal with The Bantams in the summer following a successful spell on loan at Valley Parade last term. The talented midfielder made 27 appearances for the club as Bradford finished 8th in League Two and narrowly missed out on a playoff spot. 23-year-old Cooke progressed through the Middlesbrough academy but didn’t make a first team appearance during his three years as a professional at the Riverside. Instead, Cooke spent the second half of the 2016-17 campaign on loan at Crewe and the whole of 2017-18 with League One Blackpool. He signed for Peterborough in 2018 but after making 20 appearances for The Posh in 2018-19, he joined Bradford on loan last season and the performances of the former England youth international earned him a permanent switch. Career: Middlesbrough, Crewe Alexandra (Loan), Blackpool (Loan), Peterborough United, Bradford City (Loan).
FORWARD
16. BILLY CLARKE
Billy Clarke re-joined The Bantams in the summer after a brief but memorable spell at Blundell Park last season. The 33-year-old scored twice (including one on his debut at Leyton Orient) for The Mariners in 13 appearances and was a major part of Ian Holloway’s squad prior to the pandemic. The intelligent and hardworking frontman made over 100 appearances for Bradford in his first spell (scoring 25 times) and has already found the back of the net four times this season. The Irishman, dubbed ‘Wild Bill’ by Ian Holloway, is a product of the Ipswich Town academy, was a part of the Blackpool squad promoted to the Premier League in 2010 and has had spells with Crawley Town, Charlton Athletic and Plymouth Argyle. Career: Ipswich Town, Colchester United (Loan), Falkirk (Loan), Darlington (Loan), Northampton Town (Loan), Brentford (Loan), Blackpool, Sheffield United (Loan), Crawley Town, Bradford City, Charlton Athletic, Bradford City, Plymouth Argyle, Grimsby Town.

09. LEE NOVAK
Lee Novak is Bradford’s top scorer with five goals this season, despite missing six weeks of the season with a calf injury. The powerful 32-year-old joined The Bantams back in January following a three-year stay at Scunthorpe United, where he hit 26 times in 106 appearances. The hard-working Geordie made a name for himself back in 2009 when scored 28 in 38 appearances for Conference North Gateshead and earned a high-profile move to Huddersfield Town - who he helped win promotion to the Championship in 2011-12. Novak was later signed for Birmingham City by his former Huddersfield boss Lee Clarke and had spells with Chesterfield and Charlton prior to his move to Lincolnshire. The striker scored on his debut for Bradford against The Mariners back in February. Career: Gretna, Newcastle Blue Star, Gateshead, Huddersfield Town, Birmingham City, Chesterfield (Loan), Charlton Athletic, Scunthorpe United.

TOWN 2-0 BRADFORD CITY 1ST SEPTEMBER 1903
SIX
OF THE BEST
vs BRADFORD CITY By John Kirk
Bradford were formed and immediately elected to the Football League in the close season of 1903. A team was assembled for a large sum (at the time) of just under £1,000, and so Bradford made their way to their first ever competitive game of football, never having played in any competition before! And that first game in their history was... v the Mighty Mariners, at Blundell Park. Goals by Archibald Dunn and Fred Rouse saw off the new upstarts in front of an estimated 4,000 fans.
BRADFORD CITY 2-1 TOWN 5TH MAY 1934
This might sound a strange selection for a place in the six-of-the-best... but it was the final game of the 1933-34 season. Town had not only beaten Blackpool 7-0 (sorry Ollie!) the week before, but were miles clear at the top of Division 2, already promoted to Division One, and well – what the hell! Pat Glover scored the Mariners goal. First Division here we come! Earlier in the season we had stuck three goals past Man United at Old Trafford on Christmas Day and another seven past them on Boxing day in Cleethorpes!
TOWN 2-1 BRADFORD CITY & BRADFORD CITY 0-2 TOWN 12TH & 23RD APRIL 1952
Town, under Bill Shankly, were on fire! Between January and the end of the season, Town won 17, drew two and lost just one game as they chased Lincoln for the sole promotion spot from Division 3 North. Bradford were rolled over on Easter Saturday at Blundell Park with goals from Billy Cairns and Jimmy Maddison in front of almost 17,000 fans! You think that was a good gate? 24 hours earlier Town had beaten Stockport in front of the still-record-league-attendance of 26,605!
TOWN 2-0 BRADFORD CITY 28TH APRIL 1956
Under Allenby Chilton, Town went from re-election to promotion in one season – the only team ever to do so (a record that will last forever!). Again, we were well clear of second placed Derby County, and a two-nil victory over the Bantams just made the final match against Halifax that bit more comfortable. Billy Evans and Jimmy Maddison did the business for the Mariners.
TOWN 2-0 BRADFORD CITY 17TH OCTOBER 1998
My choice for sixth place in the six of the best may seem strange at first sight. I did think of the 16th April 1979, as John Newman’s Mariners were promoted from Division 4 and beat Bradford 3-1 at Valley Parade as the season reached its climax; or March 1997, when, again at Valley Parade Town ran out winners in a sevengoal thriller. But I’ve settled on the next meeting between the two clubs in October 1998, purely because it was the very last time that we beat the Bantams! We’re certainly due another win today! And for Bantam fans compensation, they’ll need no reminding that at the end of that season, they finally got back into the First Division (Premier League) after 77 years!

CONNECTIONS:
NEIL WOODS
Scott Harneiss writes about his favourite ever Town player and the circumstances surrounding his debut for The Mariners after signing on loan from Bradford City just hours before. Neil Woods, or “Woodsey” as he is known by fans, signed for Grimsby Town on-loan from Bradford City in unusual circumstances on the eve of the 1990-91 season. Woodsey soon became an instant favourite amongst Town fans. He was undoubtedly one of the most intelligent players during his time at Town and was a vital player in the success of Alan Buckley’s sides during the 1990’s. The York-born forward started his career at Doncaster Rovers as an apprentice and he went on to make his professional debut in 1983 and spent three years making 65 league appearances, scoring 16 times. His time at Belle Vue drew the attention of the then Glasgow Rangers manager, Graeme Souness, who signed him for £120,000 in 1986. His time in Scotland was blighted by a ruptured ankle ligament, and after only three substitute appearances he made the move back to England with Ipswich Town for the same fee of £120,000. Woods found opportunities hard to come by at the Portman Road club and after two and a half years, he made the move to Bradford City on a free transfer part way through the 1989-90 season and scored twice in 14 appearances for The Bantams. Prior to the opening day of the 1990-91 season against Preston North End at Deepdale, Alan Buckley only had Chris Hargreaves available for selection after injuries to Keith Alexander and Tony Rees in preseason. In typical Alan Buckley fashion, and explained in his book ‘Alan Buckley: Pass and Move’, Buckers signed Woodsey the day before the game and without having met or trained with the players, Woods went straight into the matchday squad. The striker was picked up en route to Preston at a service station on the M62. However, it was still touch and go as to whether he would make his debut. On the morning of the game, Woodsey called Buckers complaining that he had a bad back and was doubtful for the game. Buckers persuaded him to walk his dog on the morning he was picked up in Huddersfield. Upon boarding the team coach, Woodsey gave a nod of his head to inform his new manager that he was fit for selection. Without training with the side, he went straight into the starting X1 and scored Town’s third, nine minutes from time to secure a 3-1 win. A week later he scored a brace on his home debut in a 4-3 win over Wigan Athletic. Woodsey is amongst only a few players that have scored on their home and away league debuts. He scored five in six during his loan spell from Bradford City before signing for £82,000 and went on to spend eight successful years at Blundell Park. He made 228 League appearances, scored on 42 occasions and was part of two promotion winning squads. Woods later signed for his hometown club, York City in 1999 after loan spells with Wigan Athletic, Scunthorpe United and Mansfield Town. After his playing days, he returned to Grimsby Town in 2003 to become the club’s youth team manager before later managing the first team between 2009-11. After a move to Walsall as head of youth, Woodsey returned to Blundell Park in 2016 as academy manager. In recent years he has overseen the progress and development of several youth team players that have made the step into the first team.

STAYING CONNECTED
Back in February, when The Mariners earned a last gasp point at Valley Parade, few were aware of the coronavirus pandemic that was about to change all of our lives. Jim Barwick writes about the ‘band of merry Mariners’ he went with that day and how their friendship have continued to help one another through two national lockdowns. Social media can be a force for good, this is a story of just that. Exiled Mariners have stayed connected with their club and friends through various means over the years. Clubcall, phone calls, the occasional Sports Telegraph posted by relatives; we’ve always found a way. Over the last few years a small group of Town fans based in West Yorkshire have found each other through Twitter and regularly share lifts home and away. I had a routine which was generally driving to Cleethorpes, having a pint at ‘Message in a Bottle’, then to the match and driving home. Offering lifts via Twitter soon turned this from a one man routine, to a couple, then three and four. This band of merry Mariners joined forces with friends in Cleethorpes. We all had a shared history; that of
28
Town away. This is where football really counts. It’s our friendships, our common purpose, being able to escape the realities of life for a few hours on a Saturday. It wasn’t that long after when Covid struck and all of this was no more.
following Town for many years. Plenty of stories and reminiscence of games from years ago, players, anecdotes from away days. Countless games we were all at over the years, but as strangers. Not only did we have this shared history, the common bond of supporting Grimsby Town, but we were creating a new history, new anecdotes. Genuine friendships had formed. This particular exile lives on the outskirts of Leeds towards Bradford. With a pub round the corner and a direct bus route to Bradford, any away trip to watch Grimsby play Bradford was always going to be a good one. So this came to pass last season. Some of our group met at my house for a large fortifying breakfast, washed down with tea and coffee just in time for the pub to open at 11am. There we stayed for a few drinks, then onto the bus direct to Bradford. Catching up with more fellow Mariners, more merry by now. Anyone that went to this game will remember the atmosphere being great pre-match. The last minute equaliser felt like a winning goal, so off we all went to catch the bus back. Spirits were high on the journey back and it’d only have been rude not to have gone back to the pub. It was a superb day out, all of our group together enjoying the best of watching
For us however, it didn’t end. We had a group chat, named after that Bradford away day. First rule of the group chat – don’t give away the name of the group chat! (However, for any fans of The Inbetweeners, it is based on our mode of transport to the Bradford game). Pretty much every day since the 23rd March when lockdown was announced, the ten people have used the group chat to communicate with each other. Now these days group chats are not that unusual, but ours has maintained. It’s seen us through some difficult times, good times and bad. Topics have been wide ranging from the plain daft to the more serious. Common throughout has been chat about Grimsby Town, the players that we let go, transfer rumours, getting back to playing. There’s been the more serious; jobs lost and gained and furlough, what the future holds the uncertainty and worry. Some relatives had Covid and were seriously ill, others were shielding and the concern this brings. Inevitably the nonsense chat was more fun. Anything from what’s the best cleaning products, various pictures of food and drink to arranging fake away days! It’s been so important during these strange times. There has always been groups of friends that meet up for matches, all with their own stories to tell. These groups merge together to make up our loud and proud support. Whilst we yearn for this now, the group chat has held together because of all our common heritage and memories. We all love our football club and, as we know, football isn’t just the 90 minutes on the pitch, it’s everything that surrounds it. As Ollie said in a press interview, “football is part of a community and fans a part of a tribe”. These things are important for us all, our wellbeing and our mental health. This is particularly so in these uncertain times. Stay connected and talk. We have and it’s been the best.
