ood afternoon, firstly I’d like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year. Obviously 2020 has been a very difficult year, so let’s hope 2021 is a bit better!

It’s really pleasing to be back as manager of this football club - it didn’t take me very long at all to decide to come back because Grimsby Town FC will always mean a lot to both myself and Chris. I continued to keep an eye on the fortunes of the club from afar and now I hope we will be able to create more good times and make new memories very soon. However, the focus at the moment needs to be steering the football club away from the position we’re currently in. I’m not going to criticise what’s gone on before but we do have a lot of players who are relatively unknown and, in truth, they probably need a bit of extra help. We have a very big squad and I think it can be difficult to create the right sort of team spirit with so many players in the building. I’ve always preferred to work with a tighter group and that’s something I’ll be looking to get soon - but with some new additions along the way. There is some space in the budget to bring in new players and I’m hoping with some astute signings we can strengthen the squad as soon as possible. Obviously with the possible takeover on the horizon, it’s a very exciting time to be manager but we have to concentrate on the here and now because there’s a real challenge on our hands. Luckily, there’s more than half of the season still to go but this is a difficult situation due to Covid and not being able to work in the same way I have done in the past. Chris and I are going to have to adapt to that very quickly and take advantage of the time that we are together as a group. Today’s opponents are having a good season under Mark Bonner and I’ll be looking at our lads to build on the point and clean sheet they earned against Oldham in midweek. Enjoy the game and Happy New Year. Hursty

REPORT IT.

KICK IT OUT OF FOOTBALL.

MACCA CAPTAIN’S COLUMN:

Afternoon all.

It was horrible watching the game on Tuesday night from home hoping the lads would get a result. Although we didn’t win the game, given the last few days, I thought the lads battled really well to get a point against a team with a great away record and it was even better to keep a much needed clean sheet! Obviously since then we have appointed the gaffer and Doigy. I personally think it’s a great decision from the club and hopefully it’s exactly what we need to start climbing the table. However, even going back to Alan Buckley’s 2nd/3rd spells here (which I know would have been the same), I have absolutely no doubt the gaffer will want to be judged on his spell this time around rather than the past. It’s important that we (the players) raise our levels to get up to the standards the gaffer will demand of us. Sadly I will miss today’s game due to testing positive for Covid-19. I’m doing well (for anyone who actually cares), it’s just frustrating to be missing such an important period and I really miss the day to day routine of training etc... So I will be watching on like the rest of you, with my fingers crossed that we get off to the best possible start. Happy New Year! Macca

THE GAFFER IS BACK!

Almost five years after guiding The Mariners to the Football League, Paul Hurst is back to help the club preserve its place in League Two. The former Rotherham defender was in charge at Blundell Park from 2011 to 2016 and in 2015-16 he memorably led Town to promotion via the play-offs. With The Mariners 6th in League Two, Hurst moved to League One Shrewsbury Town in October 2016 and went on to save The Shrews from relegation. The following season, he took them to Wembley twice in the EFL Trophy and League One play-offs. Hurst then had a short spell in charge of Ipswich Town in the Championship before the 46-year-old spent eight months with local rivals Scunthorpe United last season. In midweek, it was announced that Hurst, along with his assistant Chris Doig, would be returning to the club where he won promotion in 2016. Ahead of his first game back in charge, The Mariner editor Jack Johnson caught up with the new Town boss.

06

Paul, what’s it like to be back? It’s a bit surreal. I have been back as manager of the opposition but obviously this is different. Not a lot has changed in the last four years, if I’m being honest, and it’s been good to see some familiar faces again. The situation has changed a bit since you left in 2016. Do you think we’re in a battle to survive? Absolutely and there’s no shame in admitting that. We’re down near the bottom at the moment and we need to do something about it. The squad I’ve inherited is too big, in my opinion, and there are a lot of what I would describe as unproven players at League Two level. I’ve already said that I think we need to add more quality to the group - and that’s at both ends of the pitch - so that’s something I’m looking at. You’ve been at Shrewsbury Town, Ipswich Town and Scunthorpe United since last time. Do you think we now have a more experienced manager than your first spell? Yeah, I’ve managed almost 150 more games of football, made a lot more contacts in the game and I’ve definitely improved tactically as well. The same can be said for Chris (Doig) as well. The last time he was here it was his first job as an assistant manager - he’s been at my side ever since. With regard to myself and Chris, I think Grimsby Town have an improved version of both of us.

I’M REALLY HAPPY TO BE BACK AT THE CLUB AND HOPE WE CAN START TO MAKE SOME NEW MEMORIES VERY SOON

You managed to keep Shrewsbury Town in League One in 2016-17 - do you see this as a similar challenge? It’s similar but Chris and I went in at Shrewsbury a little bit sooner - although they were bottom of the league at the time and we’re not. I think during the January transfer window that season we brought in eight new players and managed to move out eight. We might not be able to make those kinds of wholesale changes here this January, but we’ll certainly be looking to make some key improvements to the team.

You left your last role with Scunthorpe United at the end of January 2020 but have you still been watching a lot of football at this level? I’ve watched lots of League One, League Two, National League and U23s games so I’m well aware of what’s been happening and crucially which players might add something to the group. With the takeover expected to happen in the not too distant future, it’s an exciting time to be returning to Grimsby Town. How much was the takeover a factor in that decision? Yes the takeover was a factor in my decision but primarily my focus is on keeping the football club in the Football League. I know that in the longer term there are big plans for the club, and also the area, and it’s exciting to hopefully be a part of that. But I’m concentrating on the here and now. Finally, do you have a message to the fans? Just to say that I’m really happy to be back at the club and hope we can start to make some new memories very soon. I know it’s more difficult at the moment because of Covid, but keep supporting the club and the players and hopefully you’ll be able to come back to Blundell Park and get behind us again soon. I know what a difference it will make to have you all back in the ground.

appy New Year to all fans of GTFC! 2020 was certainly one to forget for all sorts of reasons but we look forward to 2021 full of optimism starting with today’s game against Cambridge United. Our visitors have had a good first part of the season and currently sit just outside the play-offs, and so it will be another tough test for the lads. After the turmoil of the past couple of weeks, it is fantastic to see Paul and Chris back at the club and wish them the best of luck for today and the rest of the season. We had a great relationship with them last time and look forward to rekindling that in the coming weeks and months. Special mention also to Ben who has done a great job holding the fort and we are delighted he will remain part of the management team.

MARINERS TRUST

The other big news has obviously been the agreement of heads of terms for Andrew Pettit, Jason Stockwood and Tom Shutes to purchase John Fenty’s shares and repay his loans. We are pleased this is now agreed and hopefully the transaction can now complete quickly through the necessary legal process and EFL approval. Jon and Dave had the pleasure of meeting Andrew and Jason at the Oldham game and had some good tentative discussions about fan engagement and how we could improve. We agreed to put something down on paper over the next couple of weeks for discussion. One idea we have always favoured is the introduction of a Fans Parliament which would see regular meetings with representatives of all fans, not just ourselves, to share information and ideas. For instance, these could include, travel clubs, disabled groups, message boards, exiles etc. It would be up to each group how they organised themselves in terms of representation and feedback, but it would ensure engagement with the vast majority of the fan base. This idea was well received by Jason and Andrew so we will develop it further over the next couple of weeks for discussion. In terms of the wider aspect of fan engagement there are some things that we are already on with which hopefully will result in a much improved experience for fans. Family Coordinator – We worked closely with the club in the 2019-20 season to introduce a matchday family coordinator and this was very well received. Now that it is established we are looking to continually improve and welcome any new ideas. Fan Zone - Pre Covid we had funding approved for the introduction of a Fan Zone in the Constitutional Avenue corner of the ground. Although inside the ground it will be organised as such that fans do not actually enter the ground and can come and go as they please. It will be open to both home and away fans and the emphasis will be on it being family friendly. This project will still happen, probably for the start of the 2021-22 season assuming the return of fans being able to socialise by then. Junior Supporters – We will shortly be launching an official Junior Supporters Club in conjunction with the Club. This will build on the junior membership we already have but will reach out further across all existing and potential supporters. Look out for details in the next few weeks. Ticketing – We have worked closely with the club in the selection and introduction of a new ticketing system. This will not only have benefits for match day ticketing, such as print at home, it also opens up all sorts of potential for other things such as loyalty schemes, memberships, special offers, targeted communication. We will be working with the club to maximise the potential of this and again welcome any ideas. As previously communicated, we intended to ballot members on board representation but with the agreement now reached the urgency for that is now much reduced and indeed until we have further discussions, we don’t know yet whether that is something that the new owners will even want in its current form. Instead, we intend to take the next few weeks to reflect on where we are and what members want us to do differently in the future. To do this we will consult with both members and also other groups to ensure we get a full understanding of supporter views and ideas. Enjoy the game today and keep the faith. DANNY PRESTON

IN THE SPOTLIGHT 2

020 was definitely the breakthrough year in professional football for Danny Preston.

The left back spent the end of the 2019-20 season on loan at Alfreton Town in the National League North and has featured more times than anyone else for The Mariners this term. Preston joined Town on a season-long loan deal from Nottingham Forest in the summer and the defender’s impressive performances have been one of the highlights of the season‌ so far. The 20-year-old, who was born in Oxford, has been with Forest since 2016 and is very highly regarded at The City Ground. However, the promising defender started the season behind a number of senior players at his parent club and opted for a short-term move to Blundell Park to help develop his game. Preston has already racked up 24 appearances for Town this season - more than anyone else at the club and his performances at the back are said to have alerted a number of EFL clubs. That said, Preston now looks set to benefit from working with Paul Hurst during the rest of his loan with Town. The new Mariners boss was a left back himself and enjoyed a successful 15-year playing career with Rotherham United. Town fans will be excited to see what more is to come from the young Forest defender and if we can keep hold of him beyond this transfer window.

CAREER:

Nottingham Forest, Alfreton Town (Loan).

By John Lyons, executive editor, The Football League Paper

So, we’re by and large at the halfway mark of the season now – and some doubted we would even get that far. True, Covid-19 is still having a say week-by-week on the fixture list, but there is optimism that we will be able to get the regular season completed in all the EFL divisions this term. I’m sure no-one wants things decided by points-pergame again unless it is the last resort. At this stage, some clubs can look back on a job well done so far, some will admit they should have done better - and others will be desperately hoping a change of year brings about a massive upturn in their fortunes. In the Championship, one team who have exceeded expectations are Reading. Admittedly, Veljko Paunovic’s Royals haven’t been able to sustain the early season form that saw them pull clear at the summit, but they were still sixth in the table last weekend, holding the last play-off spot.

VELJKO PAUNOVIC’S READING SIDE HAVE EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP

Not many would have predicted that before the season kicked off in September.

schedule in the second half of the season will be a major test of their squad depth.

Two clubs who will be hoping the second half of the campaign is much better than the first are East Midlands rivals Derby and Nottingham Forest.

On the other side of the coin, Oxford were expected to be among the promotion challengers in the third tier, following their play-off final defeat to Wycombe last term.

Derby finished tenth last term and appeared to have a platform to build upon under Phillip Cocu, but they failed to get out of first gear in the opening stages of the season. Cocu paid the price and Wayne Rooney has since steadied the ship in interim charge.

However, the U’s haven’t been able to get up a head of steam. Their cause hasn’t been helped by postponements at crucial times, but there are signs they are turning the corner so don’t rule out a charge up the table in the coming months.

Forest fluffed their chance to reach last season’s play-offs in incredible fashion on the last day of the season and couldn’t shake off that hangover. It cost boss Sabri Lamouchi his job and the experienced Chris Hughton is now trying to steer them away from choppy waters at the wrong end of the table.

In League Two, Derek Adams and his Morecambe troops have excelled. Tipped for relegation, the Shrimps were fifth after last weekend’s programme. Chris Beech’s high-flying Carlisle also deserve a pat on the back for their unexpected promotion assault.

In League One, Accrington Stanley and Crewe can take a bow. Neither were tipped to shine by the so-called experts, but both are on the fringes of the play-off race.

On the flip side, Bolton and Mansfield haven’t lived up to their pre-season billing. The good news for them – and various others – is that there’s plenty of time left yet to turn things around. We are, after all, only halfway through a marathon.

John Coleman’s Stanley also have games in hand on their rivals due to Covid call-offs, though a hectic

48 HOURS, 13 GOALS A decade ago, The Mariners scored 13 goals in just two days. Tom Sargent looks back at our demolition of Mansfield Town and Histon in our first season in the Conference.

This season marks 10 years since we first dropped into non-league after sustaining 99 years of League football. A very low day in Burton saw us drop out of the league on a dark day in Derbyshire. Despite dropping out of the league Neil Woods retained his place in the hot seat at Blundell Park. Many will argue that he had earnt his chance getting Town so close to saving themselves when all looked doomed. Perhaps if that elusive win hadn’t taken so long to come when he took over in the 09/10 season it would have been different. A seemingly positive off-season brought a bit of optimism that the Mariners could bounce straight back à la Lincoln City and this was indeed buoyed by a good win at eventual champions Crawley on the opening day of the season. The large Town following that travelled south that day no doubt headed back up north excited by our chances of a title winning season ahead. The Conference, as the National League was then

known, was to prove to be a much tougher cookie than many anticipated. The first month and a half was fairly positive as we won four out of our first seven games but during that season we drew too many games and eventually fell down the table. There was a fleeting moment however, in the New Year when anything seemed possible.

PETER BORE

January 2011 started with a bang for the Mariners. In the space of two days Grimsby Town sank Mansfield at home and Histon away scoring thirteen goals in the process. It was glorious.

Two days later in Cambridgeshire there seemed to be a Grimsby Town supporter invasion of Histon. Indeed, more Mariners packed into the away than there were home fans at Bridge Road!

In the home game on New Year’s Day against Mansfield the Mariners flew out of the blocks. With youth team graduate Peter Bore opening the scoring from close range after only five minutes. Two minutes later Michael Couslon doubled the lead. Future Mariner Rob Duffy halved the Stags’ deficit before half-time but in the second half it was plain sailing for the Mariners.

Again, Woods’ charges put in a stellar performance as Town ran riot. Rob Eagle scored from inside his own half and Lee Peacock scored with a sumptuous backheel flick in front of the Grimsby support.

That season’s star man - 29 goal Alan Connell - hit two free kicks (and nearly scored another) whilst Bore completed his hat trick with a rasping drive into the far left corner from the Main Stand side in front of a delighted Pontoon. He collected the man of the match award in an outstanding team ROB EAGLE performance.

19

Suddenly, the Conference play-offs didn’t seem that far away and our eyes turned longingly to promotion under former fans favourite Neil Woods. It wasn’t to be. Less than two months later Woods was sacked and Paul Hurst and Rob Scott were poached from Lincolnshire neighbours Boston United as the board desperately tried to salvage the season. From the 1st February onwards we only won four games and our season fizzled out rather quickly. But for a brief moment in January, however, we epitomised total football and it was glorious.

Left-winger Harrison Dunk is The U’s longest-serving player with the 30-year-old making over 330 appearances in a black and amber shirt. Dunk has been at the Abbey Stadium for almost a decade now and his pace, close ball control and quality delivery into the forwards has made him a firm fans’ favourite. Born in London, Dunk was once on the books at AFC Wimbledon before joining Bromley. He featured 74 times for the Conference South side and signed for The U’s at the beginning of 2011-12. He was an integral member of their Conference play-off and FA Trophy double-winning side of 2013-14 and has been a regular on the Cambridge left flank during their time back in the Football League.

Vastly experienced Wes Hoolahan has made nearly 600 appearances in a career that stretches back 20 years. The former Republic of Ireland international brings a calming presence and a superb repertoire of passing to Mark Bonner’s midfield. After starting out with Shelbourne in Ireland, Hoolahan spent two seasons with Blackpool before joining Norwich City for a decade. During his time at Carrow Road he won three promotions, made 354 appearances, and scored 54 goals - many of those in the top flight. Following seasons with WBA and Newcastle Jets, Hoolahan joined The U’s in the summer and has made 16 appearances for his new club. The midfielder has been capped 43 caps by the Republic of Ireland and appeared at Euro 2016.

Inform striker Paul Mullin is currently League Two’s top scorer with 17 goals. After spending time with the academies at Liverpool and Everton as a teenager, the intelligent striker signed a oneyear deal with Huddersfield Town before joining Morecambe in 2014, where he netted 28 goals in 140 appearances. His prowess alerted Swindon in 2017 and he scored 10 in 47 matches prior to relocating closer to home when Tranmere came calling 12 months later. Mullin won the first promotion of his career with Rovers in 2019, whilst making a further 27 appearances in League One last season. The 26-year-old spent time on loan with The U’s last term and in the summer he made his move to the Abbey Stadium permanent.

CAMBRIDGE 2-0 TOWN 20TH JANUARY 1990

SIX

OF THE BEST

vs CAMBRIDGE UNITED By John Kirk

Let’s start the six-of-the-best with a defeat at Cambridge. More importantly than starting this article – it marked the start of a surge towards 2nd place behind Exeter City, and promotion to the third tier. Cambridge went up via the play-offs.

TOWN 1-0 CAMBRIDGE 6TH APRIL 1991

Next year, and next promotion (for both clubs)! Ironically, this win against the future champions marked the nervous end to a season that culminated in the nail-biting home win on the final day versus Exeter City. Back to the match, and 8,550 crammed into BP, to watch “Diddy” Dave Gilbert score the only goal of the game.

TOWN 2-0 CAMBRIDGE 7TH NOVEMBER 1970

Cambridge were the new boys in the League having replaced Bradford Park Avenue at the start of the season. The previous home game had attracted 4,000 fans, this game attracted 7,300. The difference – Matt Tees’ return

to the stripes almost doubled the gate! Matt Tees and Dave Boylen made it a dream debut for one of Town’s true legends! Town also won the return fixture in Cambridge by 3-2.

CAMBRIDGE 0-1 TOWN 11TH JANUARY 2012

We were both in the depths of the National League, but this game came right in the middle of an astounding 11 match run for Town when we won 10 and drew 1 game. The rest of the season was a let down, but for a few weeks we were dreaming of a return to the League! The scores were (Town first): 4-3, 2-1*, 3-1*, 5-2, 1-0, 4-0, 6-0, 2-2, 2-0, 2-1, 2-1. (*v Lincoln)

CAMBRIDGE 0-1 TOWN 15TH OCTOBER 2016

One day after the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, and Town commemorated it with a battle of their own at the Abbey Stadium with James Berrett scoring the game’s only goal. In fact it was Town’s only goal in seven games! One in the seven, if not one in the eye, eh?

TOWN 2-1 CAMBRIDGE 14TH APRIL 2017

Good Friday… and a good one for newly re-engaged manager Russell Slade as he led Town to a 2-1 victory against Cambridge … and currently our last win against the U’s. Chris Clements and Sean Dyson scored for Town. Marcus Bignot had been sacked the week before despite Town winning 3-1 at Blackpool. There must be a story in there somewhere. Personal story to finish off with. Once when we played at Cambridge, the heavens opened. In the era when away fans were sometimes kept in the ground after a match we were kept waiting in the rain for about 30 minutes. I was so soaked, I drove home in my underpants. Now there’s a vision you’re not going to get out of your mind until the year’s end!

CONNECTIONS:

IAN MILLER

Miller was a regular in the Town defence for two seasons but it was with Cambridge United that that centre back won the FA Trophy and promotion to the Football League in 2013-14. The tall and wiry centre back - who liked nothing more than to dominate opponents in aerial duels - began in non league with Bury Town before signing for Ipswich Town. After going on loan to Boston United, Miller had two loan spells with Darlington prior to joining permanently in 2008. Though still a young centre half, he became a regular for The Quakers and skippered them to victory in the FA Trophy victory in 2011. With Darlington struggling financially the following season, Miller signed an 16-month contract with The Mariners and went straight into the Town side for the 3-1 win against Lincoln City at Blundell Park. He appeared 19 more times in 2011-12 as The Mariners finished 11th in the Conference. Miller was unable to dislodge either Shaun Pearson or on loan Nathan Pond during the first half of the 2012-13 season but after Pond returned to Fleetwood, the former Darlington man got back into the side and made 28 appearances for Town - including in the FA Trophy Final defeat to Wrexham and the play off disappointments against Newport. Released at the end of the campaign, Miller was snapped up on a free transfer by fellow Conference promotion hopefuls Cambridge. The 6 foot 2 defender was given the captain’s armband at the Abbey Stadium and skippered The U’s to the double - the FA Trophy and promotion to the Football League via the play-offs. Miller unfortunately snapped his Achilles during the latter stages of the play-off final and famously celebrated the victory with his teammates in a wheelchair! Injury plagued the following season and the whole-hearted defender only managed 10 appearances for The U’s and was released in 2015 after his contract expired. Since then, Miller has featured for various non league clubs including Braintree, Needham Market, AFC Sudbury, Bury Town and the 37-year-old is currently playing for Eastern Counties League Premier Division side Walsham-le-Willows.

JAMES McKEOWN

The club’s Supporter Liaison Officer, Kristine Green, along with her children, Kieran and Kloe, pick their Town XI of the 2010s.

Goalkeeper The choice speaks for itself doesn’t it? There is quite literally no competition for this place for a whole plethora of reasons! Good goalie, even better guy who gets involved with everything around town, or at least that’s how it seems! I’d be kidding if we thought there were any other notable names other than Dean Henderson.

RICHARD TAIT Right Back We’ve gone with Taity here. Hard to look past him as part of the squad that many of us felt attached to as we gained promotion back into the Football League. Have to mention Carl Magnay who is, like Taity, a thoroughly nice guy! Also Luke Hendrie who is a dependable figure in the squad too.

2010-2019 was a period of time when the kids went to games because they wanted to and not because there was nobody to watch them! It’d be easy to look at the promotion team of 2015-16 and be done with it but that would be unfair on some good players that we’ve had during this decade.

SHAUN PEARSON Centre Back I fear we’d be letting the Town down if we didn’t include this guy. It’s not just the first team, the squad and the club that missed him when he left, but the town too. Like his football twin in Macca, he’d be anywhere and everywhere, whenever you asked. He’s taken that community ethic with him to Wrexham it seems. For all that he was a decent defender too!

So, maybe controversially, we’ve gone for 4-3-3 over the traditional 4-4-2. This is for no other reason than we could all agree on the front three!

DANNY COLLINS Centre Back The second centre back was beyond difficult! Had the pleasure of company off the pitch of both Toto Nsiala and Josh Gowling. The trio of those two and Shaun meant that we could swap and change without concern. Ian Miller also deserves a mention, from earlier in the decade. But based on the fact he was ever reliable, didn’t miss many games and played almost 90 minutes with a broken arm, Danny Collins just pips them. Sorry boys!

30

CONOR TOWNSEND Left Back The kids made this decision far easier than I would have liked them to. Conor was definitely a class above with some cracking assists and a couple of good goals during his loan spells with us but he was never our player. Majority rules though so I’d like to also mention Aswad Thomas and Gregor Robertson.

CRAIG DISLEY

is another unlucky to have missed out and had we gone for a 4-4-2 he most definitely would have made the side.

PADRAIG AMOND Striker Podge, although only here for a season, has to be in this team. The goal scoring record if nothing else speaks for itself. We remember fondly the goals at Welling before the barrier gave way on the fans celebrating and who amongst us can forget the penalty that took us to Wembley for, what was this time, a successful promotion visit.

Midfield No messing about and like Macca, there was no dispute. He will forever be known as ‘skip’ in this house and another from the class of 2015-16 who we got to know as a great guy. Always dependable, didn’t miss many games and popped up with really important goals in games where it looked like there would be deadlock. Never one to lead with a voice as captain but instead by example that clearly rubbed off on those that played around him.

NATHAN ARNOLD Midfield The man that scored the goal at Wembley that not one of us could watch without crying, even now. We could even talk about those crackers at Eastleigh where Kieran got caught out, front row of a picture that appeared in the Telegraph the day after. He’d left school early for a reason that I can’t remember, luckily they never said a word. We all felt for him on the passing of his mum and felt the emotion during the game that saw his return marked with a goal and pointing up to the sky. One of few players that could hold such status for both the Mariners and Lincoln City.

JON NOLAN Midfield Could be the only controversial decision within this 11. His impact during those 4/5 months can never be underestimated for me. We’d started to struggle to score goals, so Hursty gave him the free role and he added so many assists and important goals which played a big part in the team not falling away during the run in. His performance at Wembley in the Play-Off final, maybe rightly, will be overshadowed by Omar Bogle and Nathan Arnold but he was a driving force in that win. This was underlined by him winning Young Player of the year. Jake Hessenthaler

OMAR BOGLE Striker Maybe a little obvious in his selection but again in this household we just couldn’t leave him out. Another good guy with a good appearance to goal ratio. One of my favourite pictures, when it appears on my timeline, is his equaliser in that Braintree game with the kids at the front going wild. There are of course other goals that we could mention but we can never forget the two in that play-off final. The first went in and those around us dared not celebrate too much after the year before. But no sooner had we crossed our fingers that this was going to be our time that Omar found the net again. Straight after the tears flowed… this time for joyous reasons!

LIAM HEARN Striker This was so difficult and the reason that we went for three up front to try and make it a bit easier! We had to go for Liam Hearn for two reasons – one his goal at least every other game but because of what might have been. Football is full of it, the ‘What ifs’, and Liam is definitely one of them. What if injuries hadn’t put paid to his Grimsby Town career? One we’ll never know. I think it’s only fair to mention two other strikers – Alan Connell’s first stint at the club just sneaks in the timeline and, like those already mentioned, his goal to game ratio was superb. We’re also going to mention Ross Hannah – I remember his loan spell and subsequent signing as clear as day. He arrived as something different and something like nine goals in such a short space of time had fans desperate for him to return permanently. The time between him going back to Bradford and the permanent deal being agreed felt like an age! I’d tweeted about this the other day in remembering the news coming through of his signing as we walked home from the dentist! Kloe in particular was over the moon!
