WELCOME BACK TO PARK DRIVE FOR THIS AFTERNOON’S LEAGUE FIXTURE AGAINST HULLBRIDGE SPORTS, FOR OUR FIRST MEETING OF THE SEASON AND OUR FIRST GAME OF 2022. I’D LIKE TO GIVE STEVE AND HIS TEAM A WARM WELCOME, ALONG WITH THEIR SUPPORTERS AND TODAY’S MATCH OFFICIALS. I’D LIKE TO WISH EVERYONE A HAPPY NEW YEAR AND I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE CELEBRATIONS, WHILST REMAINING AS SAFE AS POSSIBLE. After the floodlight failure and then a further Covid outbreak, it has been a slightly frustrating festive period without the group playing much competitive football. However, the first half we produced against Heybridge Swifts was very impressive and I’d like to think that if the second half was completed, we would have converted the performance into three points. However, it wasn’t to be and we now find ourselves with games in hand over the teams around us and the fixture schedule is becoming very busy over the next few weeks. It’s no secret that Hullbridge have had a difficult season, however their results have improved in recent weeks and their two wins this season have both been away from home, which have been their last two games against Barking and Witham respectively. Please, continue to stay safe and as you always do, please keep up your support and give the boys a big cheer this afternoon. Enjoy the game. Wayne

TUESDAY 14TH DECEMBER | BBC ESSEX SENIOR CUP THIRD ROUND | ATT: 243 Maldon & Tiptree exited the BBC Essex Senior Cup at the hands of Chelmsford City in mid-December. Wayne Brown made several changes from the previous weekend, with Bryan Ifeanyi, Emmanuel Martins and Bradley McClenaghan all returning to the starting eleven. Aaron Williams-Bushell and Malachi Napa were absent due to injury. Maldon started brightly against a Chelmsford side who hadn’t played for over ten days due to postponements. The Jammers were rewarded for their opening dominance as they took the lead inside twenty minutes. A corner from the righ-hand side fell to Phil BROWN-BAMPOE on the edge of the box and he made no mistake, unleashing a venomous effort into the top corner, leaving Jacob Marsden in the Chelmsford goal with no chance. The Jammers continued to look solid in defence and dangerous in attack, however, they were punished by the National League South outfit in the 32nd minute. As Martins delayed his forward pass, Cameron James robbed him of possession in a dangerous area and crossed the ball into the box for prolific ex-Football League goalscorer Simeon JACKSON to tap home from close range. Despite Brown’s side looking comfortable, the game was turned on in its head shortly before the half-time interval. Charlee Hughes challenged Marsden in

the visiting goal and the referee showed Hughes a straight red card and reduced the Jammers to ten men for the duration of the second period. Knowing it was going to be a tough challenge with reduced numbers, Shomari Barnwell was introduced for McClenaghan as Brown looked to reinstate a presence in attack. Despite their man advantage, Chelmsford never took a foothold in the game and the Maldon defence was proving a tough nut to crack. The Jammers were not shy in attack either and both Barnwell and Joe Turpin had half-chances to put their side back in the lead. Maldon’s impressive organisation was beginning to frustrate the National League South side and the game looked destined for a penalty shoot-out. However, Chelmsford had other ideas and, in the 80th minute, a slight lapse in concentration resulted in the Jammers being harshly punished. As Maldon gifted possession once again, JACKSON found himself through on goal and showed his experience, curling home a composed effort to book his side’s place in the next round of the competition.

COOMBES RETURNS FOR THIRD STINT Midfielder Sam Coombes has returned to Park Drive for a third spell.
Coombes, who most recently departed over the summer, links up with Wayne Brown’s side once more after a short spell with Tilbury. The midfielder has previously featured for the Jammers in each of the past two campaigns, making 26 appearances for Brown’s men across both stints.
DAVIDSON SIGNS ON Attacking winger Correy Davidson has joined Maldon & Tiptree on dual-registration with Braintree Town. The Irish-born 28-year-old signed for Braintree after a spell with Kidderminster Harriers, making 28 appearances for the Aggborough outfit and finding the net three times. Elsewhere, the winger lists Bishop’s Stortford, Coggeshall Town and Witham Town amongst his former clubs.
BRIGHTLINGSEA NEXT IN TROPHY
Brightlingsea Regent will make the visit to Park Drive in the Velocity Trophy after the two sides were paired together in the draw for the third round. Regent will take on the Jammers here on Tuesday 1st February in the all-Essex tie, with the game to kick-off at 7:45pm. Home victories over Aveley and Heybridge Swifts have sealed Maldon’s place in the third round.

Records show that Hullbridge United Football Club was formed by a group of local men, fronted by the then proprietor of the Anchor Inn, a Mr. A. W. Moss. He owned a room behind the pub known as Buff’s Hall. This was where the club held its first meeting. A Mr. Brown generously allowed the club to play on his land, on the corner of Pooles Lane and Long Lane. Hullbridge United’s first colours were Green and Gold quartered shirts, White shorts and Green socks, which, by an amazing coincidence, were the same colours as those on the flag flying outside the Anchor Inn! Affiliating to the Essex County FA in 1947, Hullbridge United entered the Southend & District League for the
MALDON & TIPTREE vs HULLBRIDGE SPORTS
upcoming 1947-48 season. 1950-51 saw Hullbridge United reach their first Cup Finals. In the Section ‘C’ Final of the Southend Charity Competition, United beat Maxwell Sports 4-1. Four weeks later, in the Southend & District League’s French Cup, Hullbridge faced Rochford Athletic but, somewhat unluckily, lost the Final by three goals to four. After six seasons of Second Division football, 1951-52 saw Hullbridge finally gain promotion – and they did it in style, winning both the Championship and the French Cup. In the final, Hullbridge defeated the reserves of Great Wakering Rovers by three goals to nil. In all, the club played 28 matches that season, scoring an amazing 141 goals.
The summer of 1953 saw the club change name to Hullbridge Sports. After a few poor seasons, times improved for the club when they won the 1956-57 Third Division Championship and the League’s Shaw Cup. They finished five points clear of Canvey Island Sports in the League and saw off Victory Athletic reserves 3-2 after extra time in the Cup Final. Suffering relegation at the end of the 1958-59 season, Sports’ stay in the Third Division lasted but four seasons as, in 1962-63, ‘Bridge won promotion as runner-up in the newly named Second Division with a dramatic final day victory to ensure promotion on goal average. Drawing 4-4 at home to Southwick Rovers, ‘Bridge scored three goals in the final fifteen minutes to gain a 7-4 victory and promotion. Another double was achieved during the 1965-66 season when Hullbridge won the First Division Championship and Section ’C’ of the Southend Charity Competition – beating Southchurch Rovers 3-0 in a replay after a 2-2 draw. A respectable fifth place finish was achieved in the Premier Division the following season, along with being French Cup finalists. 1968-69 saw Hullbridge finish bottom of the Premier Division but just three seasons later the club regained their Premier Division status, finishing runner-up to Canvey Island Amateur FC at the end of the 1971-72 season. Good cup runs that year saw the club reach the semi-final of the Ramuz Cup and the Fourth Round of the Essex Junior Cup. In the late 1970s the club decided it wanted its own ground. Negotiations with Rochford Council proved successful and
the club took control of 16.5 acres of farmland in Lower Road (at the top of Coventry Hill), with the club moving during 1980. Transformation of the site was slow, with the clubhouse not officially opened until 1983. The end of the 1979-80 saw Sports put six goals past the Southend Estuary ‘keeper to win Section ’B’ of the Southend Charity Competition. A move up to the newly formed Southend & District Alliance in 1982 found the club wanting. Finishes of sixth and eighth and First Round knockouts in the League Cup wasn’t exactly what the club had hoped for. The only bright spot was reaching the 1982-83 Southend Charity Shield Final, although they lost 0-4 to Rayleigh Town. Nevertheless, again, looking for a higher standard of football, Sports then joined the Essex Olympian League for the 1984-85 season. They immediately won promotion after finishing third in the Second Division. At the end of the weather-hit 1987-88 season, Hullbridge (now in the Second Division again) brought home the Essex Intermediate League Cup, beating First Division Benfleet in the Final, held at the old New Writtle Street ground of Chelmsford City FC. After a 1-1 extra time draw, courtesy of a Mark Wood goal, Sports went into the replay 12 days later having played five League matches in between! However, after a goalless 120 minutes, Sports won 5-4 on penalties. Looking for a further climb up the non-league ladder, Hullbridge made improvements to the ground during 1989 so it passed the grade for senior football.
1990 saw the Essex County FA grant the club senior status and so the club joined the Essex Senior League for the 1990-91 season. Matt Petre had the honour of scoring the club’s first goal in senior football when, on 25th August 1990, in the club’s first match of the Essex Senior League season, he scored Sport’s only goal in a 1-3 defeat by visitors Stansted, in front of a 163 crowd. At the end of their first season, the club finished in a respectable 12th place. The new floodlights were put to good use during the 1999-2000 season when, after seven cup-ties, the youth team reached the Third Round (last 64) of the FA Youth Cup. Visitors Blackburn Rovers won the tie 6-0 in front of a crowd of over 800. After taking over the manager’s hot seat during February 2006, Enrico Tiritera oversaw a gradual improvement in the club’s fortunes on the pitch. The 2008-09 season showed a good improvement for the club and they attained their highest number of points (41) over a 30-match programme. The club also reached the Quarter-finals of the East Anglian Cup for the first time. In 2009-10 Hullbridge reached the Quarter-finals of the Essex Senior Cup, again for the first time, before losing narrowly 0-1 to Football League side Dagenham & Redbridge. The 2010-11 season saw Sports reach their first Cup Final as a senior club, the County FA’s Tolleshunt D’Arcy Memorial Cup. Unfortunately, Sports were beaten 1-2 by Braintree Town. Dan Braney and Mark Bliss took over the reins from Enrico Tiritera, who departed the club in March

2013. In their first full season, 2013-14, Dan and Mark guided the team to their best ever FA Vase Cup run, reaching the Fourth Round (last 32), before being beaten 1-3 by eventual winners Sholing FC. It was unfortunate that the club had to travel to Southampton for the fixture on a wet Tuesday evening in January. The team under Braney and Bliss took the new record of points that had been achieved in the 2008/09 season, finishing ninth with 53 points from a 38 game season, but the icing on the cake was winning the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy, the first ever silverware as a senior club, beating Haringey Borough 1-0 in the final, Michael Edgar scoring the only goal. Mark Bliss took sole charge of the team during the 2014/15 season and was joined by coach Steve Tapley. Between them they took the club to its highest ever league position and points tally, finishing fourth in the Essex Senior League with 71 points and 73 goals along the way. With yet another Fourth Round FA Vase run, only losing away to Flackwell Heath FC. Mark and Steve decided to step down from the management of the mens senior side for the 2015/16 season and Hullbridge appointed its youngest ever management team installing Rob Hodgson as the new First Team Manager along with Aaron Hunwicks as the new Coach. In their first season (2015/16) Rob Hodgson and Aaron Hunwicks took the club to new FA Cup heights by making Hullbridge Sports history and reaching the Second Qualifying Round, where they were unfortunately beaten by Grays Athletic of the Ryman Premier
Division. It was a last 32 exit again in the FA Vase equalling previous records and demonstrating the FA Vase consistency shown from previous seasons. In their second season (2016/17) running the first team, Rob Hodgson and Aaron Hunwicks found life more difficult as the side finished 11th in the Essex Senior League and disappointing early exits from most of the cup competitions, but they did take the side to the second Tollshunt D’Arcy Memorial Cup Final in successive seasons, but were unfortunately beaten again by Heybridge Swifts. Rob Hodgson and Aaron Hunwicks continued in the hot seat at the start of the 2017/18 season, but early exits from the FA Cup, Essex County Cup and poor league form saw an emotional farewell after the FA Vase victory over Wembley FC at Lower Road. Rob stayed for a short while to play for new manager Darren Manning, but Aaron left the club that had been

his home since 2012 for pastures new. New manager Darren Manning had one main objective after taking over and that was to keep the club in the Essex Senior League and he managed to achieve this finally finishing 15th (out of 21), but unfortunately Hullbridge exited the FA Vase again under Darren in the last 32 away at Tring FC. 2018/19 saw Darren Manning’s first full season at the helm and his side were playing at the newly renamed Ryan’s Heating Stadium at Lower Road. Darren and number two James Wakeling start the 2018/19 campaign in the Essex Senior League. In the first major cup competition of the 2018/19 season, Hullbridge went out of the FA Cup in the Preliminary Round away at Newmarket Town FC (2-1) and they didn’t have much joy in the other cup competitions in Darren’s first season, exiting all the other big completions in a six-week period, as they lose in the FA Vase (Newport Pagnell Town FC 0-2), followed the BBC Essex Senior Cup (Hoddesdon Town FC 5-1), the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy (Stansted 0-3) and the BBC Essex Senior Cup (Coggeshall Town FC 1-2), but they make the Semi Final of the Tolleshunt D’Arcy Memorial Trophy losing to Brightlingsea Regent of the Bostik League (5-1). In the league Darren and James overtook the previous management teams on the league points total achieving a total of 87 points and not only making Hullbridge history for the points total, but also by winning the Essex Senior League and being promoted to the Isthmian League for the first time in the club’s 29year history.

CLUB HISTORY
In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 200506 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the

Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share arrangement. In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the club’s last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took
the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs JointManager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth
place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirty-three games and finishing with a win percentage of 49.12%. At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. Disappointment came in the play-off final however when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who thenwent on to win the final,on penalties.
After a disappointing end to the previous season, Terry Spillane oversaw more wholesale changes in the playing squad, including the departure of Assistant Manager, Jody Brown. Despite the changes, Maldon finished in ninth position with seventy-six points, winning twenty-one games. More changes to the playing staff, resulted in poor start to the 2014-15 season, and the club parted ways with Spillane in September 2014, with Chairman, Ed Garty takeover as Caretaker Manager, for three games. At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points. During the 2014-15 season, Media Officer at the time, Richard Buckby ran a competition for supporters to vote for a club nickname, with the options The River Boys, The Marshmen, The Mudmen and The Jammers available. The vote took place in January 2015 and was featured on National Radio station, TalkSport, with the The Jammers winning the vote with over 50% and being confirmed as the clubs new nickname. Following the completion of the 2014-15 season, the club linked with Colchester United and the two clubs formed close ties, which resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on
a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, exLeiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the play-off places by nine points. In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points. After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts. The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of the competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600

fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season.
ED GARTY STEPPED DOWN AS CHAIRMAN IN OCTOBER 2020 Following the disappointing end to the 2019-20 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of the previous season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid. The Jammers were dealt a big blow in October 2020 when owner and Chairman Ed Garty stood down from his position with immediate effect, ending a challenging ten years at the helm. After a period of uncertainty for

the football club, General Manager Ron Dangerfield was confirmed as the new Chairman, with Richard Cowling taking ownership of the football club. Just like the 2019-20 season, the 2020-21 campaign was terminated with promotion and relegation denied for all the sides competing in the Division One North. However, prior to the curtailment the Jammers had reached the Emirates FA Cup First Round for the second successive season, this time losing to Morecambe 1-0 in front of the television cameras. Brown’s side also achieved their longest ever run in the Buildbase FA Trophy, eventually losing to Gloucester City. The Jammers were only able to play in five league games, finishing in third place before the season was curtailed. Heading in to the 2021/22 season, Wayne Brown remains in charge of the first team and is now the club’s longest-serving manager, holding the record for the most games managed in charge of Maldon & Tiptree Football Club.
