ello to everyone watching this evening’s game against Leyton Orient. Tonight will be Jobi McAnuff’s first game in charge of our opponents and he’ll be looking to get a reaction following their defeat at home to Tranmere at the weekend. I’ll be looking for something similar from my players tonight also. I think we got the game we expected against Harrogate - that’s why I selected a team that could stand up to the way they like to play. In the first half, they put us under more pressure than I would have liked and I felt we were a little too deep in midfield and also too narrow. When we changed that in the second half, I thought we grew into the game and improved. To be honest prior to what turned out to be the winning goal I thought we had started to get on top of the game and looked like we could go on and get the victory. Unfortunately we didn’t get organised quickly enough from a throw in and they punished us after a good cross and header. Even after their goal though, we had a couple of chances and on another day, we might have pulled it level. Sometimes football games can be decided on very narrow margins, and I feel that was definitely the case on Saturday. Looking back at a week ago, there’s no doubt that we’ve played better, but the important thing was that we got the three points against Crawley. The conditions were challenging for both sides, but credit to the players for working hard and adapting to the changes in formation I made. Our first goal came from a good bit of play from Joe Adams and Filipe Morais’ shot had enough on it to beat their keeper. A little later, we gave away a soft free kick on the edge of the box for their equaliser and we went in level at the break. We went two up front midway through the second half because we felt an extra body would give us a bit more of a presence due to the windy conditions and our second came from an Elliott Hewitt throw into the box and Joe did very well with his finish. Unfortunately other results last week didn’t go the way we wanted, but if anything, it just shows the importance of getting points on the board ourselves. That’s the only way we’ll end up getting out of the situation we are in. I wanted the lads to enjoy the victory because we have been a bit unfortunate in a few games recently. Thankfully we took our chances against Crawley and I’d be delighted if we manage to do the same this evening. Although we haven’t got time on our side I have to appreciate that this is a new group of players that we are working with. We all have to stick together in our efforts to pick up vital points. UTM, Paul Hurst

MACCA CAPTAIN’S COLUMN:
Evening all,
I think we are all at the point where we know this fight is going down to wire, and it’s going to have plenty of twists and turns along the way. From the buzz (and nerves watching) of last Tuesday, to the disappointment of Saturday, it’s going to be like that I think for the rest of the season. However, no matter what happens in each game, the most important thing as a group we can do - win, lose or draw - is move on to the next one. We can’t do anything about the last game. That’s gone. But we now have a long run of SaturdayTuesday games where we can start to pick up points quickly. On a side note, there is lots going on in town at the moment which I think is fantastic. Docks Beers launching their new beer, Grimsby Fish Near You and the Grimsby Horizon Youth Zone (to mention a few). Plus, hopefully we can soon return to some kind of normality with an end to lockdown in sight. If we can get the results needed on the pitch over the next few months, I really believe the whole town is moving forward to a great place. UTM! Macca

MARINERS TRUST
For our programme notes tonight we would like to tell you about an initiative from the FSA that we are supporting called #TerraceTalk. The last year has been a real challenge for everyone and put a real strain on mental health for many people. Terrace Talk is about fans looking out for each other and raising any concerns with appropriate bodies. Here are the details from the FSA website: Following on from months of work with fan reps across the EFL, the FSA is pleased to launch #TerraceTalk – a supporter-led mental health initiative. #TerraceTalk will feature a series of events across 2021 which will include training for staff and volunteers, panel discussions and the publication of shared resources. The aim of the campaign is to encourage open and honest conversations about mental health and encourage supporters who need them to seek out mental health support services. A central theme of #TerraceTalk is to also recognise the value that social aspects of the matchday routine provide to fans up and down the country. As we reported back in December, fan groups across the country have already begun discussing mental health issues, as well as raising awareness of the services and support available. “The pandemic, and lack of in-person football, has had a serious impact on our collective mental health,” said Deborah Dilworth, the FSA’s EFL network manager. “It feels like an important moment to establish and develop supporter-led work on a national level around mental health. “#TerraceTalk will hopefully encourage fans to keep an eye out for each other and check in on a friend or fellow supporter you’d normally see at the match.”
09
Supported by the EFL and Mind’s ‘On Your Side’ partnership, #TerraceTalk aims to complement existing initiatives in football. Much of the planning and preparation for the launch of this campaign has been carried out by supporter representatives from the FSA’s EFL Network – aiming to raise awareness of critical mental health issues and deliver initiatives at club level. The FSA would like to thank those fan reps and volunteers that have helped us shape the national campaign so far. Gemma Teale, from Brentford Independent Association of Supporters and LGBeeTs who has been working on the project’s sub-committee, said: “Mental health is important to us all, and especially at a time when so many of the ways we look after ourselves are not available to us, we need to talk and support one another. “We can’t be on the terraces but we can make sure we still have our #TerraceTalk and keep those connections that are what makes being part of the football family great.” Online resources and a social media toolkit are also available for supporter organisations to download and use on their channels to spread the message – and point their own members and other fans to support that is available. Geoff Bielby from Hull City Supporters’ Trust (HCST) said: “Over the last four years HCST and our colleagues at other trusts have been working hard on mental health issues and trying to get people to seek help when they need it. “Football, and the matchday routine, is a vital social release for so many and a year of behind-closed-door games has really taken its toll. We’re acutely aware of how damaging lockdown has been on our mental health – it’s so important that supporters come together in whatever way they can to fill that void.” If you would like to know more about #Terrace Talk please contact us at enquiries@marinerstrust.co.uk. IN THE SPOTLIGHT Y
oung Welsh midfielder Joe Adams marked his home debut with a sublime winning goal against Crawley Town last week.
The 20-year-old Brentford loanee, cleverly hooked home a long throw by Elliott Hewitt in the 79th minute to earn The Mariners a 2-1 victory and three important points. Adams moved to Blundell Park on transfer deadline day from the Championship side and has added a creative spark to the Town team. The Wales U21 international is a great technician with the ball and his football intelligence will be a valuable asset to Paul Hurst for the rest of the season. The versatile midfielder began his career at Bury, progressing through their academy from the age of seven, through to 17, when he made his Shakers debut back in April 2018. He signed a new two-and-a-half year deal later that year but after only making three senior appearances, the young Welshman signed for Brentford in July 2019 for an undisclosed fee. Last season, the promising teenager featured 33 times for Brentford B, scoring 5 times; playing mainly as a wing back. This season, Adams scored nine in 16 appearances for the Bees’ B team, which persuaded Paul Hurst to bring him to Blundell Park for the rest of the League Two season. Town fans who saw his goal at the Pontoon end last week, will see why the young midfielder is so highly-rated at his parent club. Hopefully the Welshman can produce more magic during his rest of his spell with The Mariners.
CAREER:
Bury, Brentford.

Playing in windy conditions, Town took an early lead when Luis Adlard tapped home from close range following a rebound from Jamie Potts’ strike from the edge of the box. But Scunthorpe responded quickly and scored when a cross was turned in from close range. The Mariners were still in control of the game and restored their lead after 18 minutes when Harvey Tomlinson’s corner was converted from close range by Edwin Essel. Two minutes later it was three! Owen Davey picked the ball up and strode forward to slide Evan Khouri in who found the bottom corner. A great team move was then finished off by Essel to make it 4-0. Town quickly added a fifth when Adlard tapped home from close range. A sixth was added by Khouri just before the break, following good play by Essel.
EVAN KHOURI
The second half was a closer affair, and Scunthorpe grabbed their second after a cross was turned in from close range. However, Town made it 7-2 when substitutes Louis Boyd and Callum Stratton combined well and found Stratton who was brought down in the box. Potts stepped up and dispatched the penalty kick to complete an emphatic performance from Neil Woods’ side.

Grimsby Town U18s 0-1 Bradford City U18s The young Mariners started in a positive manner and had Bradford camped in their own half for large parts. Essel went close on two occasions, as did a Potts free kick. Patrick Boyes did have to make a good save down low to his left from a Bradford striker. The second half was slightly more open and Bradford took the lead when a lapse in concentration allowed the Bantams’ centre forward to lift the ball over Boyes on 65 minutes. Town pushed for an equaliser, Statton missed two chances and Bramwell’s header was saved by their keeper right at the death. Town: Boyes, Scott, Blakeley, Davey, Grist (Smaller), Goundry (Milner), Potts (Bramwell), Khouri, Essel (Stratton), Adlard, Tomlinson (Boyd). Subs: Stratton, Milner, Boyd, Bramwell, Smaller.

CLARRIE WILLIAMS
he 1950s came in like a lamb and went out like a wounded stag. The first season of the decade ended with Town being relegated to Division 3 North with 97 goals conceded. 51-52 was Shankly’s season as he pruned the staff and added players of considerable experience. But despite a record 66 points that included an 11 match winning sequence, he missed promotion. Shankly was like a coiled spring pre-season 52-53 but he bought unwisely and the aging team fell away after leading the table at the end of November. The club situation deteriorated and a team with no youth policy finished seventeenth with Shankly replaced by Billy Walsh who took on a demotivated, demoralised team in 53-54. A ray of hope came with the arrival of player manager Allenby Chilton in 54-55 that assessed his players’ strengths and 18 players left the club. In 55-56 he introduced five high quality players and consequently Town won Div 3 North. He consolidated Town’s position in Div 2 in 56-57 with players that had earned the promotion, purchasing more as the campaign advanced with Rafferty replacing 35 goals Crosbie for example. The side scintillated in 57-58 as fifth highest scorers and 13th but were the fourth most porous defensively. We were relegated in 58-59 with an atrociously leaky defence. The team continued with their attractive attacking football in the inaugural Division 3 with eight of the squad forming the nucleus of the team to be promoted from Division 3 in 61-62.
Former full back Jack Hodgson recommended the brave and likeable Clarrie Williams. Clarrie experienced gates of over 25,000 against Chinese League opposition during his National Service. Clarrie was comparatively small at 5 feet 9 for a keeper. He weighed 11 stone. What impressed me was his athleticism. He was amazingly agile and his speed off his line was that of a sprinter. A safe pair of hands and a great shot stopper, golf enthusiast Clarrie kept 25 clean sheets and conceded 29 goals in the successful Div 3 North championship campaign.
BILL BROWN Bill Brown was one of a handful of experienced players signed on Shankly’s arrival for 1951-52. He was a full back that took no prisoners. His judgement of an opponent’s cross field ball was impeccable. His interceptions made it hard for these passes to reach their target. He was brave. Once he deputised for injured ‘keeper Stan Hayhurst against Lincoln and Bill dived about fearlessly. Secondly, in Town’s first game back in Div 2 in 56-57 at Eastvill, he blocked a 6 yard screamer with his chest.
ALLENBY CHILTON In 55-56 we relished the Mariners’ Div 3N championship success following the ignominy of having to seek re-election the previous season. Ex Manchester United and England International Allenby Chilton became player manager in March ‘55 but he could not reverse a losing trend. 18 players were released after season 1954-55. The replacements
For my first 7 years of the decade I was at Wintringham GS living with my parents. National Service took care of two years but three football seasons. I started work in May ‘59 at the Yorkshire Bank Cleethorpes Rd. The football revolution was underway with many aspects of the game due to change.
18
soon gelled and Allenby moulded a remarkably capable team. His clear sightedness was his overriding asset. He made five highly effective signings and brought in two fitness fanatics. Two superb winning sequences ensured promotion but that was only the start as Division 2 beckoned.
PADDY JOHNSTON Paddy arrived from ‘Boro in Feb ‘49. He survived the relegation upheavals of 50-51 and I idolised his attributes of positional play and concentration. He always tried to use the ball purposefully and his attacking skills resulted in his playing 45 times for the Shankly promotion side as part of the much vaunted Johnston, Maddison, Galbraith and Hernon quartet. Eighteen fixtures credited for the Chilton promotion eleven with nine matches in the run-in. Johnston married Grimsby Channel swimmer Brenda Fisher in the 1950’s.
WALLY GALBRAITH Walter joined Town in 1950 after his club New Brighton lost their League status. A man with Clark Gable looks, played at left back and was a fierce tackler. After he won the ball we loved the way he turned artist, not afraid to swivel his hips and beat two opponents in his own penalty area. He would then bring one of Johnston, Hernon or Maddison into positive attacking action, especially in Shankly’s first season.
GERRY PRIESTLEY Clarinettist Yorkshiremen Gerry joined Town in their promotion year 1955-56 from Exeter City. He played equally well on the wing or inside forward. He was generally regarded as the fastest player at Blundell Park and was difficult to stop in full flow. One such unstoppable run was made from the inside left slot against Darlington when he carried the ball at least 60 yards before Bob Crosbie finished off the move. His hard hit low crosses produced wonder goals for both Bob Crosbie (headed) and Johnny Scott (volleyed) on other occasions.
JEFF WHITEFOOT The Grimsby press turned the purchase of Jeff into a stop press drama. We played at Barnsley that Saturday and the headline “Whitefoot a worker” speaks volumes. He delivered pure football, spotted and sensed opportunities and displayed a positional sense. His distribution brought wingers Scott and Fell into the game. Whitefoot never wasted a ball. We were 3-1 down at Barnsley but the drive of Whitefoot, aided and abetted by Scott and Fell meant that we rolled up our sleeves and Ron Rafferty’s two goals did the rest.
JIMMY HERNON Jimmy joined us in August 1951 from Bolton Wanderers. Could courageous Jimmy cope with the hurly-burly of the Third North? Jimmy became an important member of the promotion seeking side. He could be easily knocked off the ball but he could control a pass, turn on a sixpence, and send an opponent the wrong way.
His fearless diving header in the six yard box, netting the winner against Wrexham, is clearly remembered. Cartilage problems curtailed his appearances and in 1954 he moved to Watford.
JOHNNY SCOTT Johnny joined Town, after our promotion of 55-56, from Manchester United. He soon became a crowd favourite and he had an eye for goal scoring opportunities. His Xmas day goal against Liverpool is evidence. Scott’s dribbling wizardry made him a formidable if short-fused opponent. His short and long term passing games were sublime whilst Scott, Rafferty and Fell formed a much feared attacking triumvirate. Johnny appeared in the 1958 World Cup for Northern Ireland and remains the only Mariner to attain that status.
RON RAFFERTY Ron Rafferty is the second-highest goal scorer in Grimsby Town’s history with 152 goals in 277 appearances. He died recently but was held in high esteem. He moved from Portsmouth in Dec ‘56 and succeeded Bob Crosbie notching 26 from 40 fixtures in his first full season followed by 19 goals from 39 fixtures in Town’s barely explicable relegation mishap of 58-59. His ability to jump high, hover and direct his header goalwards was an immeasurable, attractive asset but his skill on the ground should never be underestimated.
JIMMY FELL Left winger Jimmy joined Town in 1953. His first team debut coincided with Town’s return to second division football in 56-57. I recall Jimmy playing in Town Reserves and his ability to beat a player and accelerate were qualities he carried into the league. He was not afraid to shoot from distance although generally with his left boot. Fell and Scott supplied goal-getters Hunt and Rafferty in 59-60 with many of their combined total of 67 goals on a plate. Fell left for Everton in Mar ‘61 for £18,500.

Brophy’s pace down the left flank makes him one of Orient’s sharpest offensive tools. Able to play both left-back and left-wing, he’s notched five assists this season - bettered only by Orient Interim boss, Jobi McAnuff. Born in London, Brophy started his youth career at Harrow Town before signing for Broadfields United in 2013. Following two years at Broadfields, Brophy then joined Edgware Town where he impressed before attracting interest from Swindon Town where he eventually signed during the summer of 2015 after a successful trial. The 26-yearold was a regular at the County Ground for a couple of years prior to his move to Orient on loan in 2017. He signed permanently in January 2018 and was a part of the O’s team to win the National League title in 2018-19.
Orient’s big number 9 has so far scored 10 goals this season. Wilkinson is very comfortable on the ball and enjoys taking on defenders and creating opportunities in the final third. The 26-year-old joined Orient in the summer of 2019 from National League side Dagenham & Redbridge where he bagged 12 goals in 23 games. The 6 foot 3 striker started his career at Bolton Wanderers and featured for The Whites 17 times in a four-year spell. While at Bolton, he enjoyed loan spells at Torquay United, Oldham Athletic, Newport County, and Chesterfield before he made the permanent switch to Gillingham in 2017 for an undisclosed fee. Wilkinson appeared for the Gills 50 times in total before he signed for Dagenham & Redbridge. He has also appeared for the Republic of Ireland at youth level including U21s where he made 13 appearances and scored two goals.
Danny Johnson has been prolific in front of goal for the O’s this season, scoring 17 goals for Orient in all competitions. During his youth days, the forward had spells at Middlesbrough and Hartlepool United, but it was his time playing non league - in particular 51 goals in 48 games for Guisborough Town - that secured a move to Championship side Cardiff. Released by the Bluebirds after just a season in South Wales, Johnson scored 53 goals in 127 for National League club Gateshead and earned a move to Scotland. After a season with Motherwell and six months at Dundee FC, he moved to Orient in January last year. The striker has recently returned from injury and will be looking to find the back of the net for the first time since his strike against Salford on the 2nd of January.

SIX
OF THE BEST
vs LEYTON ORIENT By John Kirk
Leyton Orient have a fascinating history, which I am sure will be covered elsewhere. They are one of the clubs – including Manchester United, Manchester City and Birmingham City who have played under various names as a league club, but I can’t think of another club that has played league games under three different names – Clapton Orient, Leyton Orient and just Orient, and then back to Leyton Orient again. I hope that explains why this six of the best appears to show Town playing three different clubs!
2-1 AND 4-1 TO TOWN 14TH OCTOBER 1905 AND 17TH FEBRUARY 1906
for Town again. Earlier in his career he set a record by saving three penalties in one match – a record that stands to this day. Sadly, even he couldn’t stop Town having to apply for re-election at the end of the season.
This was Clapton Orient’s first year in the league, whilst Town were in their 14th season, and had already been into and out of the top tier. Experience counted on these two occasions and the Mariners raked in a full 4-point tally.
TOWN 7-2 LEYTON ORIENT 24TH AUGUST 1957
CLAPTON ORIENT 2-1 TOWN 13TH MARCH 1915
I mention this not for the score, but for the occasion. Many of the players in the game had already signed up to join the Duke of Cambridge’s Own Middlesex Regiment, which became known as the Footballer’s Regiment. At the season end, ALL of Clapton Orient’s players went off to the regiment, whilst Town captain Sid Wheelhouse had joined several weeks earlier, but the agreement was that the players (now military men) could return to their clubs at weekends. Six weeks after this game, Clapton’s players marched off in a military parade. Eventually three of their players – McFadden, Scott and Jonas all perished, whilst Sid lost his life on the 19th September 1916, when he and his party who were shoring up a trench were hit by a shell, and then poison gas. When the clubs next met in the 1919-20 season Walter “Buns” Scott was in goal

Strange how you can remember where you were when certain events occur. Personally, this was one such time. I was at my grandparents at Immingham, close by the Immingham Town tram terminus when the news came through. It was the first game of the season and there were six JIMMY FELL different scorers – Gerry Priestley netted twice, with the others coming from Dick Conner, Billy Evans, Ron Rafferty, Ron Stockin and Jimmy Fell. It wasn’t even our biggest win of the season, as we won at Eastville, 7-0 against Bristol Rovers. Dick Conner by the way holds RON STOCKIN the best record of any Town manager, albeit for just a seven-game stint between Tom Casey and John Newman!
LEYTON ORIENT 0-2 TOWN 27TH APRIL 1991
Town had been promoted the previous season, and were in the hunt for a second successive season, but we couldn’t buy a win in the four matches before this game. We had lost two and drawn two, so if we hadn’t won this game, we could probably kiss our chances of another promotion goodbye. In Town’s team that day was the wonderful Paul Futcher, and man of all parts, Garry Birtles. On this occasion, Garry was playing up front. Not only did he score, but so too did the under-rated Tommy Watson. The chance of promotion was back on. After a 0-0 draw at Stoke, everything was down to the John Cockerill match versus Exeter City game in front of 14,000+ fans at BP!
TOWN 4-1 LEYTON ORIENT 14TH SEPTEMBER 1999 LEAGUE CUP ROUND 2, LEG 1
We’d already beaten Carlisle in the two-legged 1st Round, and now we were to entertain the O’s over another two legs in the second round. Town notched four through David Smith, a rare goal from Tony Gallimore, Lee Ashcroft and then Paul Groves. Although Orient had scored an away goal, the difference was too much for them to overcome, and Town went through to play Leicester City.
LEYTON ORIENT 0-3 TOWN 11TH MARCH 2017 GARRY BIRTLES
Our first season back after six years in the wilderness, and at last a comfortable victory. Sign of the times: of the entire squad that day, only James McKeown remains. It seems almost ancient history that the scorers were Sam Jones (2) and Scott Vernon!

CONNECTIONS:
WAYNE BURNETT Wayne Burnett will forever be remembered for scoring that ‘Golden Goal’ at Wembley, but the midfielder began his football career at Orient. Burnett had unsuccessful trials with Arsenal, QPR and West Ham before joining the youth team at Leyton Orient. He made his debut in 1989 and went on to become a regular in the O’s side at the beginning of the 90s. During this time, the youngster caught the attention of the national selectors and represented England at youth level. Clubs were obviously keeping tabs on Orient’s promising midfielder and in 1992, he got his first opportunity to shine on the big stage when he was signed by Blackburn Rovers. After just one season at Ewood Park and three appearances, he was transferred to Plymouth Argyle in a part exchange deal that saw Andy Morrison go the other way. Burnett did enjoy regular football during his two years at Home Park, but the lure of Premier League football was enough to persuade the Londoner to join Bolton Wanderers in 1995. However, with The Trotters struggling, a change of manager mid-season resulted in Burnett being frozen out at Burden Park. Frustrated with the lack of opportunities at Bolton, he joined Huddersfield Town at the start of the 1996-97 season and featured regularly for Brain Horton’s side in a deep-lying creative midfield role. Horton lost his job in October the following season and the ‘flair player’ was allowed to move to Blundell Park in January 1998. The signing by Alan Buckley proved to be a masterstroke, with Burnett’s silky skills turbo-charging Town’s promotion push. Next to the talismanic Paul Groves in the middle of the park, Burnett managed to fulfil his unquestionable potential with a string of match-winning performances that left Mariners fans in awe of his ability. He scored five goals in 29 appearances during 1997-98; four of those coming in the Auto Windscreens Shield campaign - including that historic winner against AFC Bournemouth. Unfortunately, injury blighted the rest of Burnett’s time at Blundell Park and the midfielder couldn’t manage more than 20 appearances in each of his next four campaigns. That said, when the midfielder was fit, there was never any doubting his class. On his day, he had the ability to make Division One midfielders look silly; simply with a drop of the shoulder and a swivel of his hips. He had a superb touch and could spray passes to all parts of the pitch in a style that seemed totally unique. In 2002, the midfielder was released by Town and after playing spells with Woking, Grays Athletic and Fisher Athletic he moved into management - most notably for Dagengham & Redbridge. He’s currently Head Coach of the Tottenham Hotspur Under 23 team.
