ello to everyone tuning in to our game against Colchester United this evening. I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome Wayne Brown, his players and staff and wish them a safe journey back after the game. Wayne has recently been placed in charge and will be keen to impress between now and the end of the season. Looking back to our last game here against Forest Green Rovers, although we lost, it was a much better performance against a team who are chasing automatic promotion. I thought we looked more of a threat, played with a better shape and were very unfortunate not to take something from it. I don’t usually like to comment, but I couldn’t help feeling that a lot of the decisions did go against us on the day. The lads were sure that it wasn’t a penalty and I also felt that there was a foul on Jake Eastwood directly before the penalty decision. The second goal also has an element of bad luck with a slight deflection and a player standing in an offside position. So there was frustration and disappointment on that front. However, I was able to get some sleep that night because I knew the players at least had a go - and I think that’s what the fans want from their team. The phrase ‘the minimum requirement is maximum effort’ is something I preach and truly believe. We need to perform like that more often between now and the end of the season, and if we do, sooner or later our luck will change. In truth, we thought our luck had changed at Carlisle until the last minute of injury time. Conceding an equaliser so late was a real bitter pill to swallow because we’d kept Carlisle at bay well. I thought it was one of our better performances - not particularly for the fluency of the football, but certainly for the spirit, attitude, discipline and organisation of the team. Yes, Carlisle are having a hard time of it at the moment, but on their day, they are one of the best teams in the division and our lads stood up to them really well and looked quite comfortable. Again, there were positives to take out of the game our front two were a real handful, Julien Lamy came into the team and looked a threat and put in the ball for Lenny’s great header and there were other good performances too. However, we need those positive signs to start turning into three points. As we get towards the end of the season, we know there will be some strange results. We have to try and make sure some of those ‘strange results’ involve ourselves - in terms of us being one of the teams at the bottom fighting for our lives. I’ve mentioned before that I’m aware in some quarters we’ve already been written off. All we can do is try and prove them wrong - because the team I’ve watched from the touchline the last couple of games still has a chance. UTM and keep supporting the lads, Paul Hurst

MACCA CAPTAIN’S COLUMN:
Evening all,
Obviously it was a disappointing end to the game on Tuesday. But as I said last week, the rest of the campaign will be full of ups and downs. Ultimately, in the cold light of day, the last two performances from the boys have been good, and I think if we play more games like that, we will get the points we need. Today is a strange kick-off time in terms of when players eat before the game. Normally ‘pre match’ is eaten three hours and 30 minutes before kick off and most footballers will tell you that a 5:30 kick-off is quite difficult to balance because, say lunch is midday, you probably don’t want to eat again at 2pm. So all these little things you have to try and manage. It even affects what you do during the day, because you don’t want to be doing too much, but at the same time you don’t want to just be sat doing nothing all day either! Some lads will go for a walk and have a stretch, others might have enough kids to keep them occupied and busy (those will be praying the wife takes them out to the park!). So even though it’s not a huge time difference, footballers on the whole are creatures of habit and all these details will go into trying to make sure you feel as good physically and (perhaps more importantly) mentally ready as possible. I say more importantly because once you cross the white line, no matter what’s going on off the pitch or how you feel, sometimes adrenaline can be enough to see you through. There’s just a little insight into what our Saturday would have been like… hopefully we can end it with three points and a beer (for you Mariners)! Take care, Macca

MARINERS TRUST
A
fter the disappointment of the last minute goal by Carlisle to deny what would have been a well deserved three points, we quickly move on to this evening’s game against Colchester. Welcome to all the players, staff and officials who have travelled up from Essex. There is no doubt that the last two performances have deserved more and if we can keep up that level, the wins will surely start to come. Good luck lads! This week we had our first Mariners Trust board meeting following the AGM which elected new board members Chris Parker, Wayne Brightmore and Kelly Billings. The first thing we needed to do was appoint a new Chair and we are delighted that Kristine Green put herself forward and was duly unanimously elected. Chris Parker had also declared a willingness to stand should he be needed but with Kristine standing he agreed she would be a fantastic appointment and agreed to be Vice Chair. Kristine has outstanding knowledge of fan engagement and football governance through her role with the FSA and we are sure she will make a great Chair. The other officer appointments remained unchanged with Sandii Raithby as secretary and Ian Townsend as Treasurer. It was very appropriate that this happened on International Women’s Day and with Kelly, Hayley and Sandii also on the board and Sharon managing the bars, the growing number of female supporters we have are very well represented. In terms of the Treasurer’s role, Ian has been doing it for a long time now and does a fantastic job behind scenes which often goes unnoticed and unappreciated. We really need to make sure we have a succession plan in place which would also allow Ian to do other things which we know he is very keen to do; particularly on anything to do with the history of the club. If anyone feels they would like to help with the Treasurer’s job and has the necessary skills please get in touch at enquiries@marinerstrust.co.uk. Although we now have a full complement of board members, we are still grateful of any help. Including, to his credit, Alan Rutter who is keen to still help despite not being re-elected to the board. The way we will operate will be through sub groups such as events, membership, fan engagement etc and so there is nothing to stop volunteers from outside the board, particularly if they have appropriate expertise, to be included on one of the sub groups. As mentioned before, for the Fan Zone we will be seeking the help of lots of volunteers during May and June to clear and tidy up the site. We will also be seeking the help of local tradesmen who can help out with some time and materials. Please contact us if you would like to be involved. As we start to look forward, and hopefully the easing of restrictions, we are starting to tentatively plan for the Beer Festival which we hope will be mid July and also the annual Open Day which we have pencilled in for Sunday August 1st. We will have more details on these and other initiatives in the coming weeks. Enjoy the game and keep the faith, The Mariners Trust Board

ELLIOTT HEWITT
IN THE SPOTLIGHT T
his season Elliott Hewitt has shown that he’s probably one of the most versatile players in League Two.
After largely featuring at right back last term, the former Wales U21 international has also played a number of games in the middle of the park, left back and more recently at centre half. Hewitt has been a regular this season under both Ian Holloway and Paul Hurst and will undoubtedly be an important player for the final few games of the campaign - regardless of where he plays. The 26-year-old joined Town at the beginning of last season after a four-year spell with Notts County. While at Meadow Lane, Hewitt made over 150 appearances and converted from a right back to a central midfielder under Kevin Nolan. During the 2017-18 season, County narrowly missed out on promotion to League One and Hewitt played 50 times - the majority of those being in centre midfield. Born in Rhyl, the 6 foot 3 player progressed through the ranks at Macclesfield Town and went on to feature 25 times for The Silkmen before moving to Ipswich Town. He spent three years with The Tractor Boys but only managed 16 appearances; instead gaining experience on loan at Gillingham and Colchester United. Also during this time at Portman Road, he was capped by Wales U21 on several occasions.
CAREER:
Macclesfield Town, Ipswich Town, Gillingham (Loan), Colchester United (Loan), Notts County.
10
Calm on the ball and strong in the tackle, Hewitt’s mobility has recently earned him a place in the heart of the defence next to fellow Welshman Rollin Menayese. Hopefully the pair’s fledgling partnership will continue to flourish this afternoon.

Grimsby Town U18s 0-2 Rotherham United U18s Our youth team slipped to a 2-0 defeat to Rotherham United at Cheapside last week. Rotherham took the lead inside the first two minutes from close range after an error from Town keeper Patrick Boyes. However, Town rallied and created a number of good chances with efforts from Harvey Tomlinson, Luis Adlard and Josh Smaller going close. Unfortunately, though, The Millers added a second shortly before the break thanks to a fine volley from the edge of the box. The Mariners went in search of an equaliser in the second half and a Tomlinson header forced the Rotherham keeper into a good save. In an end-to-end encounter, they also created several opportunities but Boyes made a number of sharp saves to prevent The Millers from adding to their lead. Town: Boyes, Scott, Blakeley (Markham), Davey, Smaller, Goundry, Potts, Bramwell (Dennis), Milner (Boyd), Adlard, Tomlinson. Subs: Markham, Jacob, Boyd, Moore, Dennis.
Grimsby Town U18s 1-1 Notts County U18s Town drew with Notts County at Cheapside on Tuesday morning. Town made a positive start when Bramwell and Potts both had efforts from close range but failed to find the target. Notts loaded balls into the box but the Town back line stood strong and dealt with the threat well. The young Mariners took the lead shortly before half-time when Markham’s cross was turned in from close range. County pressed higher up the pitch and frustrated Town in the second half. Essel did have a chance to extend Town’s lead, while at the other end, County went close. Eventually, The Magpies were awarded a penalty and it was dispatched to make it 1-1. The game continued in the same vein but the game fizzled out and the sides went away with a point a piece. Town: Boyes, Markham, Scott, Davey, Smaller, Goundry, Tomlinson, Bramwell, Essel, Potts, Adlard. Subs: Braithwaite, Jacobs, Milner, Boyd.

GEORGE TWEEDY George made his debut in 1932. He had a wonderful career as Town’s number one ‘keeper both pre-war and the first season after the hostilities. He was the first keeper I saw don either the red or the blue jersey of GTFC. He was awarded an England international cap against Hungary in 1938 and chosen as he was an intelligent, talented keeper, commanding at crosses and, of course, a super shot-stopper with a prodigious kick.

T
he Mariners reported for duty in the top division in September 1946 after finishing 17th in the wartime Football League North of 194546. Our opening match was away against Manchester United and we lost 2-1. Jimmy McGowan netted in the game played at Main Road because Old Trafford was severely damaged during the blitz. 0-0 at home with Wolves followed, but my first match was on 6th Sep 1946 against Preston North End. The game set a pattern that has survived more than 70 seasons! We led 1-0, went 2-1 down, levelled at 2-2 and gifted PNE the winner at 3-2. Preston right winger Tom Finney stood out but during 46-47 and 47-48 we were privileged to see top international players like Tommy Lawton, Billy Liddell, Wilf Mannion, Frank Swift, Stan Matthews and Jimmy Hagan. A sevenmatch unbeaten run coupled with two goalless draws at home against Arsenal and Manchester United were highlights. 1947-48 was a disaster with the cupboard bare. Consecutive home defeats against Fulham and Nottingham Forest dispelled any ideas of promotion in 1948-49. The attack improved as Briggs matured and McKenna, Hair, Johnston, Shearer and McMillan arrived. We finished twelfth in 48-49 and eleventh in 49-50 and were joint second highest scorers but also the second worst defence. The front line of Briggs, Cairns and Hair was sheer entertainment.
18
PADDY JOHNSTON Paddy arrived from Middlesbrough in February 1949. He survived the relegation upheavals of 50-51. The ubiquitous Paddy had the admirable attributes of positional sense and concentration. He used the ball purposefully. He is the only survivor of “our” team for both the forties and fifties. Paddy was an ever-present in the Mariners goalfest of 49-50 and missed one fixture in the Shankly Super season of 51-52. He played 18 times for the Chilton ‘55 promotion eleven. JACK HODGSON One of several players that survived the war and returned to BP offering two years of blood, sweat and tears. He was the best left back in the club with his vast experience and his innate ability significant. He joined three other players instructed to keep the celebrated wizard of the dribble Stan Matthews quiet against Blackpool. Matthews moved around the pitch with or without the ball and Harry Betmead and Jack were physically shattered after that experience.
TOMMY BLENKINSOPP Tommy Blenkinsopp’s potential was never realised. He made his debut in 1946-47 and stole the early limelight as a wing half. He was selected for the Football League and became a stand-in centre forward in the autumn of 46-47 scoring seven goals in an unbeaten seven match run. The goals dried up and despite spells in midfield and a few games in the heart of the defence, his busy social life was cited as the catalyst for his decline. Middlesbrough paid £12,000 after our 47-48 relegation. ERNIE FORREST Certain players hover when attacking a ball and this gave fiery Ernie Forrest a head start as a 5’8” centre half signed from Bolton Wanderers in May 1948 after playing impressively against Town in the First Division. Any quick promotion hopes rapidly disappeared and abstemious Ernie left for Millwall with his career ravaged by the war years. There is an apocryphal story of cups being thrown at half time. He was a player of considerable ability both on the ground and in the air. BILLY WARDLE Signed from Manchester City pre-war and made 73 post-war appearances. He was a skilful ball playing winger and when he received the ball the crowd buzzed. He could beat his marker with ease, beat a second challenger but frustratingly would go back and beat the first opponent a second time. Eighteen goal Bill Cairns benefitted from Wardle’s crosses made with pin-point accuracy and Wardle hit five penalties - a club record at that time. Blackpool paid £10,000 for Wardle post Div 1 relegation. STAN LLOYD Despite a hatful of goals for Sunderland Reserves, Stan never became a Roker regular and moved to Blundell Park in August 1948. Physically sleight, winger or inside forward, Lloyd was an intelligent player and created numerous openings for the free scoring Briggs/Cairns combo of 48-49 and 49-50. Stan netted twelve goals from 65 matches in those two seasons including a hat-trick against Sheffield Wednesday, converting two penalties out of three. He became a valued member of the Shankly star-studded outfit of 51-52. JOCK SHEARER The Mariners signed inside forward Jock Shearer from Bradford City to enhance the goal soaring potential of a side that already included the
fruitful Briggs/Cairns double act. His first full season was 1949-50 and he returned 6 goals in 24 games. Jock’s willingness to shoot powerfully from distance made him a crowd favourite. A serious injury in the collision with Bert Trautmann of Manchester City abruptly ended Jock’s exciting career prospects. TOMMY BRIGGS Tommy was Town’s first postwar cult hero. His 47-48 debut season was a disaster for this muscular raw recruit whose enthusiasm failed to hide a lack of basic skills. Hard work and Billy Cairns rectified this deficiency and this England B international netted 26 and 36 times in successive Div 2 seasons. His departure to Coventry City was controversial and the crowd missed his aggressive approach as he forced his way past defences to notch a winning goal. BILLY CAIRNS Geordie gentleman William Hart (Billy) Cairns’ career blossomed after his 34th birthday. His heading ability was legendary and he bagged 18 goals and 16 goals in successive first division campaigns. He reached folk-hero status as he hovered above defences. Skipper Billy saw moves develop as if playing chess. Billy’s time spent with Tommy Briggs was crucial for both Tommy and Town. Cairns played until May 1954. GEORGE HAIR Diminutive, crowd favourite George signed for Town from Newcastle for a record £6,000 fee in Feb 1949. The contact-lensed left winger was noted for his direct approach and his meticulously placed crosses. He scored one goal in his first season from 16 outings but the next season, with Town again Div 2 second highest scorers, Hair played 38 times, scored 6 goals, but his runs down the left flank produced telling crosses for Briggs (36) and Cairns (17). Age took its toll and he moved to Peterborough in June 1951.

COLCHESTER UNITED
THE MARINER PROGRAMME DESIGNER AND COLCHESTER UNITED SUPPORTER DANIEL PARKER INTRODUCES OUR OPPONENTS.
IN GOAL... DEAN GERKEN (APPS: 200 | CLEAN SHEETS: 44)
Veteran shot-stopper Gerken returned to the club last season after ten years away. He has been kept busy this year and stood up to the task with a host of fine displays, but the 35-year-old has suffered with a recurring back problem that has him sidelined at the moment.
CALLUM COULTER (APPS: 0 | CLEAN SHEETS: 0)
20-year-old goalkeeper Coulter is yet to make his senior debut, only appearing as an unused sub on a handful of occasions since signing a professional deal last summer.
SHAMAL GEORGE (APPS: 10 | CLEAN SHEETS: 1)
A young goalkeeper who was brought in as Dean Gerken’s understudy this season, George has impressed in recent weeks in Gerken’s absence with some fine saves – none more crucial than a finger tipped effort onto the post just moments before equalising against Carlisle. The U’s would go on to secure a first win in 14 attempts afterwards.
SHAMAL GEORGE
AT THE BACK... MILES WELCH-HAYES (APPS: 32 | GLS: 1)
TOM EASTMAN (APPS: 398 | GLS: 21)
Welch-Hayes is an athletic right-back who signed from Macclesfield a week or so before last season was curtailed. He has covered at centre-back previously this season too and scored a fantastic header from the edge of the box in the home game with Oldham.
JOSH DOHERTY (APPS: 4 | GLS: 0)
Long-serving Eastman is now in his tenth season at Colchester and could make his 400th appearance on Tuesday night. The centre-half has become more comfortable with the ball at his feet in recent seasons, has excelled on the right of a back three and likes to regularly ping an accurate cross-field ball to the left wing. A four-time Player of the Year winner.
TOMMY SMITH (APPS: 40 | GLS: 2)
Colchester-born and with the U’s academy from the age of nine, the January departure of Cohen Bramall is a great opportunity for Clampin to make the left-back berth his own. Originally a winger in the youth team, the 22-year-old always endeavours to get forward and join the attack, but has been solid defensively too.
A January deadline day loan signing from Crawley to cover the outgoing Cohen Bramall, Doherty is a much more defensive-minded left-back than Bramall was whose main attributes were his pacy attacking play. He still appears to be working up to full fitness after injuries with Crawley this season and has dropped back out of the side in the past few games.
RYAN CLAMPIN (APPS: 27 | GLS: 1)
A New Zealand international, experienced Smith was signed to replace the departing captain Luke Prosser in the summer. A model pro, the 30-year-old favours the left side of the centre-back pairing and even played at left-back in the recent trip to Crawley. Smith has scored a couple of powerful headers this season.
HARVEY SAYER (APPS: 4 | GLS: 0)
An 18-year-old left-back who is just starting to break into the senior squad, Sayer was involved with the England U15s set up a couple of years back and signed his first senior contract in January.
OMAR SOWUNMI (APPS: 29 | GLS: 0)
Colchester-born, Sowunmi was actually signed from Yeovil after their relegation from League Two where he had been captain. A giant at well over six foot, the centrehalf is an old-school defender who enjoys a challenge, putting his head onto everything and has made some excellent last-ditch clearances. Sowunmi has struggled for a good run in the side during his time with the U’s.
JUNIOR TCHAMADEU (APPS: 6 | GLS: 0)
TOM EASTMAN
22
Tchamadeu was the surprise inclusion in the U’s 2-1 win over Grimsby back in December, becoming the club’s youngest-ever starting debutant aged 16. Well-built for his age, the right-back has also turned out on both the wing and the left flank in recent weeks.
IN THE ENGINE ROOM... TOM LAPSLIE (APPS: 163 | GLS: 4)
A key, unsung hero in the U’s midfield, Lapslie provides the shield for the defence and breaks up the opposing play. Small in stature but big in heart and endeavour, it’s been an injury-hit campaign for the academy graduate and the side could do with his fight currently as the season reaches the business end.
COURTNEY SENIOR (APPS: 138 | GLS: 14)
A 23-year-old winger with bags of potential, Senior has all of the tricks up his sleeve and has taken teams apart single-handedly before. It has been a struggle to reach those heights this season though and he has found minutes difficult to come by since Christmas.
big prospect from the academy. The 20-year-old centre-midfielder has featured in every game this season, scoring three times, displaying all of the attributes of a well-rounded midfielder; passing, dribbling, tough-tackling, composed on the ball and with a good strike on goal, including a Goal of the Season contender away to Barrow.
BRENDAN SARPONG-WIREDU (APPS: 17 | GLS: 0) After a short loan spell last season, Sarpong-Wiredu returned on a permanent deal from Charlton in January and has stood out in his appearances since then. Full of energy and running, the committed centre-midfielder is toughtackling whilst also offering an attacking threat.
CALLUM HARRIOTT (APPS: 80 | GLS: 18)
HARRY PELL (APPS: 78 | GLS: 11)
Club captain Pell brings plenty of bite to the U’s midfield, always looking to get stuck in and lead from the front. At well-over six foot his height offers a different physicality to the centre of the park and an aerial threat in the 18-yard box, but he is another who has missed large parts of this season through injury.
NOAH CHILVERS (APPS: 43 | GLS: 3)
The bright spot of a tough campaign for the U’s is the emergence of Chilvers as the next
NOAH CHILVERS
Harriott was previously with the U’s on loan in League One, and he was often too good for that level back then – so, on his day, he is definitely a cut above League Two. Blessed with super pace and incredibly quick feet, Harriott is a bag of tricks who can win games on his own. He has scored a few spectacular long-range strikes too, but could be accused of trying to do too much alone sometimes.
PARIS COWAN-HALL (APPS: 20 | GLS: 2)
Colchester’s forgotten man, speedy winger Cowan-Hall suffered terribly with injuries in his first season in Essex last year when he was out from September. This season he appears to have been out of favour more than injured but did come off the bench in midweek. Performed admirably as a right-back in last season’s Carabao Cup win over Tottenham.
KWAME POKU (APPS: 73 | GLS: 6)
Still only 19, Poku burst onto the scene last season shortly after joining the U23s squad from Worthing. Originally introduced as a winger, Poku has played everywhere across the three in the U’s 4-2-3-1 formation and is always looking to drive forward positively with the ball at his feet. This season has been more difficult for the youngster, but he has shown undoubted potential.
BEN STEVENSON (APPS: 89 | GLS: 6)
Probably possessing the best distribution in the Colchester squad, Stevenson is a technical centremidfielder with a fine eye for a pass – and he isn’t a stranger to the occasional long-range goal either. Comfortable both sitting in front of the defence and helping to play out, his best display was arguably in the ten role as the U’s cruised to a 3-0 win at home to Plymouth last term.
AND UP TOP... ARAMIDE OTEH (APPS: 10 | GLS: 1)
A bustling number nine, Oteh joined on loan from QPR in January after the departure of Luke Norris left the U’s short of centre-forwards. The 22-yearold provides a different type of attacking option compared to the rest of the U’s forwards who are perhaps better suited to coming in from out wide and he scored his first goal in the recent defeat at home to Exeter.
JEVANI BROWN (APPS: 52 | GLS: 11)
Signed from Cambridge where he had been deployed as the creative number ten, Brown’s best patch for Colchester came in November as a false nine – bagging two hat-tricks in a week and nine goals in five games with an impressive composure in front of goal. Without a goal in 18 games, the additions of Aramide Oteh and Frank Nouble has seen Brown drop back into the hole.
MICHAEL FOLIVI (APPS: 22 | GLS: 3)
Folivi is a lively forward who has looked adept playing anywhere across the front four since his arrival in November. He looked to be striking a good understanding with Jevani Brown before injury took him out of the side in late December. The former Watford man plays on the front foot and is always looking to get a shot away.
FRANK NOUBLE (APPS: 99 | GLS: 15)
Fan-favourite Nouble returned to the club on loan in January after six months at Plymouth. A big, physical presence on the pitch, Frank is a similarly big presence off the pitch and his infectious character will be vital in the dressing room if the U’s are to keep their heads above water. Best-utilised coming in from the left, Nouble will regularly use his strength to hold off defenders whilst his teammates join the attack.

SIX
OF THE BEST
vs COLCHESTER By John Kirk
GRIMSBY TOWN 1960-61
COLCHESTER UNITED 2-2 TOWN 24TH AUGUST 1959
Like London buses, we never play Colchester United once, then suddenly we play them twice in eight days! Town had just been relegated from Division 2, and dropped down NOT into Division 3 North as it would have been 12 months earlier, but into the newly-formed Division 3. Town had opened the new season with a 5-1 victory over Chesterfield, making them the first ever leaders of the new division. Then the first away game – down at Colchester on Bank Holiday Monday and a 2-2 draw. Ralph Hunt and Ron Rafferty scored the Mariners’ couple. Both had scored a brace two days earlier, so after just two matches they were already on three goals and would set the stats alight in the remainder of the season.
TOWN 4-1 COLCHESTER UNITED 1ST SEPTEMBER 1959
at Newport County by 2-0, and after the Colchester home game we entertained Accrington Stanley for another win – 4-0. Ralph Hunt scored in every one of the first ten matches!
TOWN 2-0 COLCHESTER UNITED 30TH AUGUST 1960
The previous season had started Chesterfield (H), Colchester (A), Newport (A) and Colchester (H). The 1960-61 season started with games against Chesterfield (H), Colchester (A), Hull C (A) and Colchester (H)! Town started the season in even better form than the previous one! Unbeaten in the first 10 matches, in this one Ron Rafferty and Mike Cullen were on target for the Mariners. A 5-2 v Bristol City in mid-September a 6-1 (Halifax) and 6-3 Tranmere in late October promised much for the season… but sadly it petered out.
TOWN 3-0 COLCHESTER UNITED 21ST MARCH 1972
The return game took place on the Tuesday evening (no floodlights at the time!) in front of over 14,000 fans. They were in for a treat as Ralph Hunt scored a hat-trick with Johnny Scott scoring the other. In between the two Colchester games, Town had won
This game was sandwiched between two rare defeats as McMenemy’s side closed in on promotion from Division 4. Over 13,000 fans crowded into BP for the game, with Brace, Tees and Gauden all netting.
26
COLCHESTER UNITED 0-1 TOWN 17TH APRIL 1972 In the reverse fixture a month later Town were facing three tough away games on the trot with Colchester being the first of those three. Lew Chatterley scored the only goal of the game to make it six wins out of seven (the other result was a draw). There were still plenty of twists to the saga before promotion was assured against Exeter in front of a full house at BP (22,500)!
LEW CHATTERLE Y SCORED THE DECISIVE GOAL IN A 1972 WIN AT LAYER ROAD
EVER HOPEFUL WE MIGHT BE, BUT THERE WAS NO CERTAINTY OF A GREAT SEASON TO COME WHEN TONY REES (2), TOMMY WATSON AND AN OWN GOAL PUT TOWN IN THE DRIVING SEAT TOWN 4-1 COLCHESTER UNITED 2ND SEPTEMBER 1989
It was only the third league game of the season, but this win moved the Mariners on to 7 points. Ever hopeful we might be, but there was no certainty of a great season to come when Tony Rees (2), Tommy Watson and an own goal put Town in the driving seat. A League cup win at Blundell Park by 3-1 over Coventry in the second round 1st leg seemed to set Town up for a famous giant killing, but a 3-0 reverse at Coventry was sandwiched in the middle of four League defeats. A win over Gillingham was the only bright spot as the season threatened to peter out before Christmas, but suddenly Town hit form. From late January until the end of the season, the Mariners lost just three matches, and won almost all the remainder. The return TONY REES GRABBED A at Colchester was one of the games that we lost in that period, and BRACE IN TOWN’S 4-1 by just one goal, but we were on a roll, and at the end of the season WIN IN 1989 we were promoted despite that. A season end like that would do us a power of good right now!

CONNECTIONS:
THOMAS PINAULT The ball-playing midfielder from the French Riviera made his name in English football at Colchester and later spent a season at Blundell Park. Thomas Pinault was a product of the youth system at AS Cannes but as a fresh-faced 17-year-old he joined Colchester United in 1999. The Frenchman had to wait a couple of years to earn a regular spot in their first team under Steve Whitton but by the end of 2003-04 he featured over 150 times for the U’s - many of those in a midfield partnership with Colchester legend Kemal Izzet. In the summer of 2004, he had an unsuccessful trial at Dundee United and turned down a deal with Northampton Town before joining The Mariners on a one-year deal. In many ways, Pinault epitomised the way that new Town boss Russell Slade wanted to play football that season. Very elegant in possession and capable of threading passes through the eye of a needle; on his day, the former Colchester man was a cut above in League Two. The playmaker was often granted a ‘free role’ under Slade, and on a number of occasions, that decision paid off. He was pivotal to Town’s eye-catching victories against Bury, Wigan, Northampton (away), Notts County and Cambridge United, but as the campaign wore on, he was having less and less impact on games. A poor performance in the draw away at Notts County in April (Town had been leading 2-0) led Slade to single out Pinault during a scathing post-match radio interview. The Frenchman featured in the final three games of the season before leaving the club. He played 47 games for Town and scored 7 goals. After a year out with an ankle injury, Pinault had a season with Brentford and then dropped into non league to play for free-spending Crawley Town between 2007 and 2010. That summer he returned home to France and signed for his hometown club RC Grasse where he saw out the rest of his career.
