IN CHARGE:

PAUL ABRAHAMS

WELCOME BACK TO PARK DRIVE FOR YET ANOTHER FRIDAY NIGHT ISTHMIAN LEAGUE FIXTURE UNDER THE LIGHTS. TONIGHT’S OPPONENTS HAVEN’T HAD FAR TO TRAVEL AND ARE SURE TO PLAY THEIR PART IN YET ANOTHER ENTERTAINING LOCAL DERBY. A WARM WELCOME TO CHRIS, HIS STAFF AND THE TRAVELLING WITHAM SUPPORTERS. It’s been a frustrating couple of weeks off the pitch, with the weather causing postponements of both the Aveley and Stowmarket games, slowing our recent momentum. That said, after ten days without a game we did stretch the run further, earning a deserved three points away at Tilbury on Saturday. It’s not an easy place to go and win. The pitch had its challenges but the boys were persistent and brave in possession to control vast periods of the game. Early chances came and went and after going in at the break an undeserved goal down, the players kept belief in our approach and created two fine goals to turn the game in our favour. Olu, playing a slightly unfamiliar role for him, was a constant threat with his powerful forward runs and scored a rare goal with a fine finish. Ade Cole was also doing what Ade does in scoring the winner yet again. That’s four in four now for Ade who continues to make an impact on the pitch and off it with the fans. Tonight’s game will again be a test, as Witham have shown in recent weeks by taking points off the front-runners and conceding very few goals. They are sure to be tough to break down and will always offer a threat from their usual energy and pace going forward. We will have to be at our very best. Now unbeaten in six, the run continues and we go into the fixture with real confidence. Our last outing at Park Drive saw a us dispatch our local rivals, requiring a last-minute winner, which was no more than was deserved on the night. New signing Chaynie Fage-Burgin was excellent and secured a debut goal, skipper for the night Kempy was back on the score sheet and Ade, who has certainly hit the ground running, with the all-important last minute penalty. We did hope to have one or two new faces in

the squad tonight as we look for cover for our growing injury list. Skipper Stokesy is waiting on a scan and so not likely back any time soon, Bryan will be out for longer than first hoped and Chaynie will also be missing after picking up an injury on his debut. Our luck doesn’t get any better when, after signing young striker Hamid Ishola on loan from Peterborough for the remainder of the season, he sadly picked up a hamstring injury in his first training session that has ended his time with us before it even began. On a positive front, we welcome new signing George Winn to the club. An experienced defender who was part of the promotion winning Hornchurch squad under Mark Stimson. George will strengthen the squad further as we enter the business end of the season. Good news also with Daggers loanee Daniel Obi who is back from three weeks out injured, while Malachi is looking razor sharp in training and came off the bench at Tilbury to be involved in setting up the winner. Away from the club, Kojo is picking up his rehab and now back running. Lastly, we have to bid farewell to Al-Amin who has been an absolute star for us these last couple of seasons. An opportunity has come for him to play at Step Two and to challenge himself at a higher level, which is great for his development. Although staff, players and fans will disappointed to see Al leave, we thank him for his impressive service to the Jammers and wish him all the very best for the future. 12 games left, 36 points to play for and it starts again here, against our less noisy neighbours. Enjoy your evening! Paul

TUESDAY 8TH FEBRUARY | THE PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NORTH | ATT: 528 Maldon & Tiptree produced a last minute winner to claim the bragging rights for the second time this season over local rivals Heybridge Swifts. In a fixture that was abandoned after forty-five minutes back in December, free entry was on offer and Park Drive was packed to the rafters. Though the visitors named an attacking line-up, it was the Jammers who started the brighter and almost took an early lead, but for a smart save from Callum Chafer who denied a powerful effort from Scott Kemp. In the 22nd minute, Maldon took the lead. Aaron Williams-Bushell produced one of his renowned dancing runs from his own half, skipping past three tackles with the defenders unable to lay a glove on him. He laid a delicious ball back to Bradley McClenaghan who whipped an inviting cross into the box and, with the Heybridge defence all at sea, captain for the evening Scott KEMP arrived all alone at the back post to head home from inside the six-yard box. Five minutes later and the visitors from down the hill were level. A sloppy throw-in gifted the ball to Heybridge in a dangerous area and Daniel Walker seized on the opportunity, cutting the ball back to Lionel AINSWORTH to tap home and leaving Tommy Dixon-Hodge no chance.

MALDON & TIPTREE vs WITHAM TOWN

As the game began to entertainingly flow from one end to the other, both sides had chances to take the lead. Andy Fennell was a continued threat for the visitors, whilst Kemp saw a chance to bag a second goal go begging. On the stroke of half-time, Archie McFadden almost gifted the Jammers an own goal, but his miskick struck the crossbar. With the final kick of the half, Williams-Bushell was presented with a chance but he scuffed his effort wide to send both sides in to the break level. Ten minutes into the second half and Maldon were in the lead once more thanks to a debut goal for Chaynie FAGEBURGIN. Kemp had delivered a peach of a cross onto the head of McClenaghan which was expertly saved by Chafer, but the electric debutant was on hand to smash the ball home from close-range. It only took Heybridge three minutes to level the scores up once again this time. A long ball forward was knocked down to the dangerous FENNELL who was allowed plenty of time and space, taking one touch before unleashing an unstoppable effort into the top corner from at least 25 yards. With the Jammers appearing slightly shell-shocked, Heybridge wasted three chances in quick succession after their equaliser, with Fennell, Henry and Ainsworth all guilty of missing their chances, with the latter being denied by an impressive save from Dixon-Hodge. Heybridge were now in the ascendancy, and Jammers boss Abrahams introduced Ade Cole and Shomari Barnwell in search of a winning goal. Sam Coombes went close, forcing Chafer into another smart save, before Cole sent a curledeffort wide against his old side. With less than ten minutes to go, Olumide Oluwatimilehin was introduced in favour of Coombes, who had received a yellow card in the first half. As the 90th minute approached, Al-Amin Kazeem produced a dazzling run from his own half to the other end of the pitch, superbly winning a corner. Though Heybridge cleared, Maldon recycled the ball and it was the danger man Williams-Bushell causing the problems once more. As he approached the goal, he rode a weak challenge from exMaldon defender Lance Akins and, with only Chafer to beat, Williams-Bushell was recklessly brought to the ground by Darius Ghinea. The referee had no choice but to award Maldon a spot-kick in the 92nd minute. Despite Swifts’ best efforts to distract him, Ade COLE kept his composure and beat Chafer with his eyes, rolling his spot-kick in the opposite corner to give the Jammers a much-deserved three points against their local rivals.

CLUB NEWS KAZEEM RECALLED

Attacking full-back Al-Amin Kazeem has been recalled from his loan spell by his parent club, Colchester United. Kazeem was in his second stint with the Jammers, having previously featured in the 2019/20 campaign where he played a key role in the side’s run to the FA Cup Second Round. He returned to Park Drive earlier this season following his recovery from a serious knee injury and, across both spells, has racked up 49 appearances for the club. Al-Amin returns to Colchester with everyone’s best wishes.

FIXTURE REARRANGEMENTS After a couple of weeks of torrid weather, Maldon & Tiptree’s two most recent outings against both Aveley and Stowmarket Town were postponed, but both have new dates. The game with Aveley here at Park Drive fell foul of Storm Eunice, and has been rearranged for Tuesday 15th March, 7:45pm kick-off. Meanwhile, the midweek trip to Stowmarket Town was also postponed for a second time following a deluge of rain. The clash has been swiftly rearranged for Tuesday 5th April, also a 7:45pm kick-off.

BURY TOWN MALDON & TIPTREE

2 2

SATURDAY 12TH FEBRUARY | THE PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NORTH | ATT: 471 It was a frustrating afternoon for the Jammers in mid-February as they were twice pegged back at Bury Town, eventually letting two points slip at the death. On a tough pitch in difficult conditions, Paul Abrahams’ side started on the front foot and should have taken an early lead through Ade Cole. Following great exchange play between Bradley McClenaghan and Shomari Barnwell, Barnwell squared the ball back across to Cole who was faced with an empty net, but found himself beaten by the bounce of the ball and his effort went wide from inside the six-yard box. Maldon continued to create chances, with McClenaghan the next Jammers player to go close, but his effort went sailing over the bar. Barnwell was next up to miss, receiving a cross from the right and, despite finding plenty of time and space in the box, his sidefooted volley went wide of the post as the Jammers continued to toil to no reward. Up the other end, Tommy Dixon-Hodge was called upon for the first time and had to make a sterling save to keep the game goalless. Bury did eventually have the ball in the net following a break down the left-hand side, but it was ruled out for offside.

10

MALDON & TIPTREE vs WITHAM TOWN

Just moments before the half-time interval, the Jammers had the lead that they deserved. A mis-control from the Bury full-back allowed COLE to snatch possession. He took one touch before planting a left-footed volley into the bottom corner, scoring his third goal in as many league games since signing for the club. After leading at the break, the Jammers would have been looking build on their lead in the second half - however, that wasn’t to be the case. In the 53rd minute, the home side were gifted with a soft goal. A quick throw-in from the right caught the Maldon defence napping, eventually allowing Ryan JOLLAND with time and space inside the box, to pass the ball home and pull his side level. It took just seven minutes for Maldon to regain their lead. Smart play down the right-hand side allowed Aaron Williams-Bushell to break free and he provided BARNWELL with the ball, with the big man cutting in from the right and curling a beautiful finish into the bottom corner to put Maldon into a 2-1 lead. For the next twenty minutes, Bury failed to test the Jammers’ defence and it was Abraham’s side who had the chances to extend their lead. Rob Clark forced the Bury shot-stopper into a save from a diving header, before McClenaghan and Cole sent efforts over the cross bar. As the game entered the last ten minutes, Bury began to drive forward in search of a second equaliser, but were finding the Jammers’ backline difficult to break down. In the 89th minute, with the clock ticking down, Dixon-Hodge made a smart save to deny Ryan Stafford’s header, with the Blues’ full-back almost making up for his early error. With four minutes of additional time signalled, the Jammers were dealt a hammer blow shortly into stoppagetime. As Bury played the ball from right to left, WilliamsBushell was guilty of missing his clearance and the ball fell at the feet of ex-Maldon man, Cemal RAMADAN, who made no mistake and blasted the ball home to snatch a point for his side.

Witham has a history of football teams going back to the 1830’s when the first recorded match involving a side representing the town was played at Lanham Green near Cressing. This was before the ‘modern’ game was codified in England in 1863 following the formation of The Football Association, whose ‘Laws of the Game’ created the foundations for the way the football is played today. The first formation of a Witham side, post-FA creation, was in 1876 when Mr.H.Green, Mr.W.Rust, Mr.F.Bridge and Mr.E.Turner sought permission from a farmer to play football in a field next to the River Brain in the town, close to Saul’s Bridge. This site was Witham FC’s home for a few seasons with play later being transferred to The Park, a pitch nearby, which was shared with the town’s Cricket Club. The 1885-86 season saw the very first Witham player appear for the County side with that honour going to R.H.Stevens. After some

MALDON & TIPTREE vs WITHAM TOWN

years, however, the cricket side objected to the damage being done to the surface of the pitch, so another move was made, in 1894, to ‘The Grove’. The Grove itself was a large private house that was built in the late 1600’s, which was eventually demolished in 1932. The pitch, noted as one of the best in the county, was located to the rear of the property not far from the old Witham to Maldon Railway line, which roughly corresponds with today’s Mayland Road and Abercorn Way. Mr.P.E.Laurence, a local sports enthusiast and President of the club at that time, owned this field. The entrance to the ground was via Chess Lane, which is now a short cut to an industrial estate. The occupants of the cottages there on ‘Finals’ days reaped a bonanza from the two pennies charged for bicycles left in their care. Witham’s first recorded appearance in a final, that of the very first Essex Junior Cup, came in 1893-94 when they lost 4-1 to Matlock

Swifts (today’s Leyton FC). During this time the team enjoyed the reputation of being one of the strongest junior sides in the country and built up a large following. They were known in those days as the ‘Red Herrings’ because of their all red kit. Two days after the Great War broke out in 1914 (28th July) the entire team under the guidance of Reginald Brown went to Warley Barracks near Brentwood to enlist in the 5th Battalion of the Essex Regiment. Witham FC re-formed in July 1919 after a meeting held at the Spread Eagle Hotel in the town centre. Again, the side played in red shirts, and, in one season, Witham won 24 matches and only lost once. Postman Mr. Fred Perry used to pay Albert ‘Summer’ Bickmore one shilling for each goal he scored. Bickmore recalled with pleasure the day he scored five. The re-formed club, which changed its name to Witham Town FC in 1921, won the Braintree & District League Championship in 1920-21, appeared in the Divisional Final of the Essex Junior Cup, won the Braintree & District league again in 1924-25 and secured the Essex Division 2 Shield in 1925-26. During these years the popularity of football seemed to have grown in the town with a Crittall’s Athletic team also forming. Crittalls Windows Works, which opened in 1919, was one of the largest employers in the town and the site of the old factory is now occupied by Morrison’s supermarket. For a small town like Witham this was perhaps too much for both these clubs to thrive, and, with waning support largely due to the increasing prominence of the Crittall’s team, after less than a decade the re-formed Witham Town disbanded. However, local opinion must have been in favour of a true ‘town’ team, as after a meeting with the Spread Eagle again forming the backdrop, Witham Town FC re-formed again in July 1933. At this meeting, held by Mr.C.Ingram (who was elected club Chairman), Mr.S.Slinger and Mr.S.Howell (who was chosen to be Hon. Secretary) the decision was made to join two competitions, The

North Essex League and the Kelvedon & District Junior League with club colours being red shirts and white shorts. In 1934-35 Witham reached the final of the Tolleshunt D’arcy Cup, losing to Tiptree United 4-2, and the following season they became Division 3 Champions of the North Essex League. That same year the club gained the use of the football pitch at Rickstones Road Recreation Ground. Unfortunately, as the clouds of war slowly gathered, and with falling support once more, in 1938 Witham Town folded. In 1948 the Witham Town FC of today re-formed thanks to the efforts of a small band of stalwarts who met in an old British Legion hut under the Chairmanship of Mr.Sid Rice who was the driving force behind the club reforming. Although the pitch was only a cow pasture with a barn as changing rooms, these basic conditions did not seem to affect the team though as in their first season back playing they became champions of the Chelmsford and Mid Essex League Division 2, winners of the Tiptree Charity Cup and the Tolleshunt D’Arcy Cup courtesy of a 1-0 win over Feering. During the following season the club moved to the Crittall Windows works ground at The Park in the centre of the town and they also became founder members of the Mid-Essex League Premier Division. Their first game at The Park was a friendly v Ipswich Town which the Suffolk side won 7-0. That year the Premier Division Cup was won. After two more seasons in the CMEL, a dispute with the League over a cup match played in blizzard like conditions, saw Witham Town switch to the South Essex League where they spent seven seasons winning the Championship in 1955-56. A supporters club was then formed and in 1958 the decision was made to join the Essex and Suffolk Border League and thus step up to an intermediate level of football, which came about in 1959. During the 1964-65 season Witham won the Essex & Suffolk Border League Championship and they

decided to seek new playing facilities suitable for senior football. The following season, 65-66, they won the E&SB League Cup after beating Whitton United 3-0 and were runners up in the E&SBL in 66-67. 1967-68 saw Witham just miss out on their second League Cup honour when they lost 3-2 to close rivals Tiptree United in the final. In 1970, the club was finally offered its present ground at Spa Road, although the move did not happen until after the end of the 1974-75 season due to the allocated plot being under cultivation. The last game at The Park ground was a 1-0 win against Basildon United on the 19th April 1975. In the meantime, Witham Town again won the Essex & Suffolk Border League (in 1970-71), and were invited to become founder members of the Essex Senior League and were the inaugural Champions in 1971-72, pipping Billericay Town to the title by just one point. Witham went on to spend more than 15 seasons in this league, usually finishing in the top half of the table. In 1981 Witham won the Essex Senior League Cup by defeating Sawbridgeworth Town 4-2 at Chelmsford City’s New Writtle Street ground. The mid 1980’s provided several top 3 finishes including runners-up in 1984-85 and 1986-87, with the Championship being won for the second time in 1985-86. March 1985 saw the Spa Road grounds’ new floodlights ‘officially’ switched on in a friendly versus Colchester United. 1986 saw more success as Witham won the Essex Senior Trophy, defeating local rivals Heybridge Swifts 3-2, after extra time. During the following 1986-87 season Town enjoyed their best run in the FA Vase when they reached the last 16 (the 5th round), before losing 2-1 at home to Falmouth, and they also secured the Harry Fisher Memorial Trophy (the predecessor to the Gordon Brasted) after beating Sawbridgeworth Town in the final. This good run of form in league and cup competitions again led the club to seek a higher level of football to play at. They applied to join the Isthmian League and this was accepted in 1987.

MALDON & TIPTREE vs WITHAM TOWN

13

Their first match in the Isthmian League (Division 2 North) in 1987-88 saw Witham win 6-0 at Ware which ended with the club finishing in 7th place. During this time, former Southend United manager Steve Tilson started his career with the club before moving on to the Shrimpers as a player. The end of the 1990-91 season would see the two Isthmian Division 2’s (North and South) ‘de-regionalise’, therefore making a top half finish imperative if Witham were to retain their Division 2 status and avoid the drop into what would be the next seasons new Division 3. A good finish saw Witham end up in 6th place, thereby ensuring their position in the restructured division and the club also made a semi-final appearance in the Loctite Associate Members Trophy. In 1993-94 Witham had their highest ever league finish, 5th in the Isthmian League Division 2. Back in the mid-90’s there was no 2nd tier to the Conference so this was their best finish at what was then Step 4. Unfortunately, this could not be built upon and Town were relegated at the end of the 1999-2000 season to Division 3 after 13 years in Div 2. However, during the previous season, 1998-99, Witham saw their best run in the FA Cup, to the 3rd Qualifying Round, before losing out to Havant & Waterlooville in a replay. The next few years saw further restructuring of the Isthmian League culminating in a runners-up spot in Division 2 (formerly Div 3) at the end of 2005-06 as Witham took their place the newly formed step 4 Division 1 North. A goal difference of just +1 separated Witham from Brook House and 3rd place. In 2007-08 they achieved their best run in the FA Trophy, making it to the 3rd Qualifying Round. After beating Chatham Town away 3-0 Spa Road saw a giant killing over Horsham who at that time were leaders of the Isthmian Premier Division. Town crashed out in the next round though after losing at Hayes & Yeading. During 2008, one of Town’s rising stars, top scorer Cody McDonald, moved on to Maldon Town and then Dartford, before being bought by the then Championship side Norwich City. This move to the Canaries makes Cody our highest profile ex-player.

MALDON & TIPTREE vs WITHAM TOWN

At the end of the 2008-09 season Witham Town finished 21st out of 22 teams consigning them to relegation to the Essex Senior League. Despite the obvious disappointment at being relegated the club had the chance to start afresh in the same league where their senior aspirations were initiated back in 1971. Off the field, former player Olly Murs became the TV show X Factor’s runner up in December 2009. As the 2009-10 season drew to a close, and on the back of eight straight wins, Witham earned the necessary point on the last game of the season at Barkingside in a tense 2-2 draw that guaranteed runners-up position just ahead of Burnham Ramblers. Unfortunately, this was not enough for Town to regain their spot in the Isthmian League. During the 2010-11 season, for the last 4 games, current manager Garry Kimble took over the reins as the club finished third. In the following campaign, Kimble’s first full term in charge, Witham Town enjoyed what could arguably be claimed to be their most successful season ever as they broke many long standing club records on the way to the Essex Senior League title, last won in 1986, and therefore securing a return to Isthmian football. As well as the league, Witham won the League Cup, Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy and the Tolleshunt D’Arcy Cup and remained unbeaten away in the league. Striker Billy Hunt also secured the Don Douglas Trophy by becoming the league’s top scorer, with Rob Whitnell and John Watson coming second and third highest league scorers as well.

in the Final as Witham secured a place in the Isthmian Premier Division for the first time. A gallant attempt was made to compete at Isthmian Senior Level, but this proved too much for a club with limited resources and the club were relegated in 2014-15. The next season was a difficult one as a number of key players moved on following relegation and it was difficult to find a settled squad. With another relegation looking likely, it was time for a management change. Garry Kimble left the club and a new management team was appointed, consisting of Adam Flint and James Robinson, both of whom had spent time with the club previously. Relegation was averted and the club finished in 19th place. Consolidation was the aim in 2016-17 and this was achieved with mid-table finish in 13th place, followed by 11th place in the following season. At the end of the 2017-18, Adam and James moved on to manage Bishops’ Stortford. Mark Ashford became the new Witham manager before the start of the 2018-19 season. John Sussex and Kevin Wren joined later as joint assistant managers. Mark Ashford resigned at the end of the season in which safety from relegation was only assured on the last day of the season at Basildon.

The return to Isthmian level began in spectacular style as the club finished 4th in the Isthmian League Division 1 North and qualified for the Play Offs only going down 3-2 to eventual winners Thamesmead Town. The club also retained the Tolleshunt D’Arcy Cup beating Heybridge Swifts 4-0.

Marc Benterman was appointed before the start of 2019-20 and needed to assemble almost a complete squad in a few weeks to start the season. This was done and the club were in 15th place with 28 games played when Covid-19 caused the season to be abandoned. Season 2019-20 only lasted until late October 2020. Marc began the 2021-22 season with a young squad but he resigned from his role as manager in November 2021.

They went one better in 2013-14, finishing in their highest ever league position, runners up in the Isthmian League Division 1 North. In the playoffs Needham Market were beaten 1-0 in the Semi Final and Harlow Town 3-0

FRIDAY 5TH NOVEMBER | THE PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NORTH | ATT: 298 Maldon & Tiptree made it back-toback wins with an explosive victory over Witham Town back in November. On a unique playing surface, the Jammers started on the front foot and created the game’s first chance. Charlee Hughes broke free from his marker and cut the ball back to the edge of the box, however his attempted pass just evaded Scott Kemp and the hosts were able to clear. At the other end, Ikpemwinoghena Yakubu sent his effort wide and the game remained goalless. The Jammers continued to create chances with Malachi Napa seeing an effort cleared off the line, Hughes watched his lobbed effort sail over the cross bar and Bryan Ifeanyi had a fierce effort saved by Madden in the home goal. In the 18th minute, Maldon were rewarded for their positive start. A corner from the right was recycled well by the Jammers and, having found its way back to Sam Cornish on the righthand side, his inviting cross bounced across the box to HUGHES at the back post who toe-poked the ball into the top corner for his third goal in two games.

MALDON & TIPTREE vs WITHAM TOWN

Looking to extend their lead, Maldon continued to create chances and Napa once again had a shot blocked before Scott Kemp blazed an effort over the bar following a smart turn inside the box. Despite dominating the first half, the half-time lead was only a single goal. At the start of the second half, the game continued in the same pattern, with the Jammers dominating whilst the hosts struggled to penetrate the Maldon defence. The chances continued to come and go with Hughes forcing Madden into another save, whilst Ifeanyi sent an effort rocketing over the bar from the edge of the box, having skipped past several defenders. In the 65th minute, Maldon had their second goal. Napa dribbled his way down the right-hand side and delivered a pin-point cross into the box, straight onto the head of KEMP whose looping header over Madden nestled into the back of the net to double the advantage over his former side. Soon after the second goal, the Jammers had their third and it came from another set-piece, this time Cornish providing the assist. A short one-two from a corner allowed Cornish to deliver a cross to the far post where captain Martyn STOKES lept higher than all those around him, planting a bullet header into the bottom corner. Maldon continued to create chances for more goals, with Joe Turpin’s effort sailing over the bar before Harry Taylor’s effort was deflected past the goal in the dying embers for the game to finish 3-0.

U7 PUMAS vs DUNMOW ROVERS TIGERS SUNDAY 27TH FEBRUARY

Report: Aaron Omand

On a sunny Sunday afternoon, the last kick off of the day saw Maldon & Tiptree Pumas entertain Dunmow Rovers Tigers in what was the third league meeting between the two sides. A friendly had been played between the two teams the week before, but it was now back to business in the Blackwater Division. The match kicked off with Billy Lamb and Ronnie White leading the line. Both came out of the blocks hard and were hustling the Tigers players from the off. Isabella Russell was marshalling the backline and some strong tackles early on showed the Tigers what they were in for. Thomas Fraser tested the goalkeeper on 7 minutes with a fine shot that was equalled by a tidy stop from the goalkeeper. However, despite an early showing from the Pumas it was Dunmow who took the lead on eight minutes. Not completely against the run of play, but the Jammers were disappointed to concede early on. Dunmow had now flipped the match and were forcing Josh Tomlinson into more action in the Pumas goal. A couple of solid claims from a corner and a through ball showed his dominance, but he was unable to do anything about Dunmow’s second. A neat ball played forward found the furthest player forward for Dunmow who took a touch and buried his strike into the bottom corner from the corner of the area. The Pumas made a couple of changes on 15 minutes and saw an instant impact made by Henry Barthorpe and Luke Trower. Both combined well with Trower first picking up the ball on the lefthand side by the halfway line before unleashing a superb cross field pass to Barthorpe who took a couple of strides forward before arrowing a shot into the bottom left via the upright. It didn’t take long for the Pumas to even up the score before halftime. This time it was Russell who was the provider for Barthorpe, his strike proving too powerful for the Tigers goalkeeper. The Pumas were now threatening the Tigers with the clock running down to halftime. George Sage stung the goalkeeper’s hands from a

free kick and Barthorpe had another shot saved, but the whistle blew for the break and the teams heading into the second half all square. Louie Omand replaced Isabella Russell at the break and made an immediate contribution on 21 minutes. Luke Trower and Omand had pressurised the Dunmow Rovers defenders and pounced on the loose ball close to goal. A neat pass through to Omand saw the neat bulge after an expert finish. The Pumas were running riot in the early part of the second half. George Sage was pulling the strings in the backline with some superbly distributed passes forward. The fourth arrived on 23 minutes with Henry Barthorpe completing his hattrick and Luke Trower taking the Pumas 5-2 in front with a superb run from midfield which ended with a tidy finish past the Tigers goalkeeper. With all that happened in

the previous 5 minutes, Dunmow rolled up their sleeves and continued to make a game of it. They broke away on the 29th and 34th minute to close the gap to 5-4, but the Jammers controlled the final five minutes with Trower notching his second of the game to shut the game down at 6-4. Billy Lamb and Louie Omand continued to commit to the full pitch press and tried to feed off any scraps from the Tigers backline, but the final whistle went and the Pumas extended their unbeaten run to 5 games. A great game between the two teams saw everyone in attendance entertained. Some great football and sportsmanship was on offer as has been in the previous matches. The Pumas roll on to next week with a home game against Uplands Rangers, the first meeting between the two teams in the league.

MALDON & TIPTREE

CLUB HISTORY

In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 200506 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the

20

Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share arrangement. In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the club’s last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took

the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs JointManager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth

place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirty-three games and finishing with a win percentage of 49.12%. At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. Disappointment came in the play-off final however when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who thenwent on to win the final,on penalties.

After a disappointing end to the previous season, Terry Spillane oversaw more wholesale changes in the playing squad, including the departure of Assistant Manager, Jody Brown. Despite the changes, Maldon finished in ninth position with seventy-six points, winning twenty-one games. More changes to the playing staff, resulted in poor start to the 2014-15 season, and the club parted ways with Spillane in September 2014, with Chairman, Ed Garty takeover as Caretaker Manager, for three games. At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points. During the 2014-15 season, Media Officer at the time, Richard Buckby ran a competition for supporters to vote for a club nickname, with the options The River Boys, The Marshmen, The Mudmen and The Jammers available. The vote took place in January 2015 and was featured on National Radio station, TalkSport, with the The Jammers winning the vote with over 50% and being confirmed as the clubs new nickname. Following the completion of the 2014-15 season, the club linked with Colchester United and the two clubs formed close ties, which resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on

a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, exLeiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the play-off places by nine points. In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points. After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts. The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of the competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600

fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season.

ED GARTY STEPPED DOWN AS CHAIRMAN IN OCTOBER 2020 Following the disappointing end to the 2019-20 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of the previous season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid. The Jammers were dealt a big blow in October 2020 when owner and Chairman Ed Garty stood down from his position with immediate effect, ending a challenging ten years at the helm. After a period of uncertainty for

the football club, General Manager Ron Dangerfield was confirmed as the new Chairman, with Richard Cowling taking ownership of the football club. Just like the 2019-20 season, the 2020-21 campaign was terminated with promotion and relegation denied for all the sides competing in the Division One North. However, prior to the curtailment the Jammers had reached the Emirates FA Cup First Round for the second successive season, this time losing to Morecambe 1-0 in front of the television cameras. Brown’s side also achieved their longest ever run in the Buildbase FA Trophy, eventually losing to Gloucester City. The Jammers were only able to play in five league games, finishing in third place before the season was curtailed. Heading in to the 2021/22 season, Wayne Brown remains in charge of the first team and is now the club’s longest-serving manager, holding the record for the most games managed in charge of Maldon & Tiptree Football Club.
