IN CHARGE:

PAUL ABRAHAMS WELCOME BACK TO PARK DRIVE FOR A RARE SATURDAY HOME FIXTURE. I’M GLAD TO PUT THE FRIDAY FRIGHT NIGHTS BEHIND US FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS AFTER HAVING TO DEAL WITH CRAZY RED CARDS, STORM POSTPONEMENTS AND DOMINATING GAMES OF FOOTBALL WITHOUT REWARD!

Our last Friday night game saw us lose out 0-1 to Witham Town. Credit to our opponents on the night, they were as resilient as expected and organised, but after creating 22 chances to our opponents’ three, we have to be winning games of football. It’s been a long eight days since our last game with two good sessions in between, and we can now look forward to two very tough home fixtures in the next four days. First up is Dereham Town and a warm welcome to Adam, Olly and the rest of the staff, committee and fans making the trip across counties from Norfolk. Dereham are currently flying high and very much in a promotion push. Like us, they’re very comfortable with the ball and have plenty of experience and quality footballers in their ranks. This fixture is never short of drama, floodlight failure, the odd questionable decision taking the attention away from two good footballing teams and setting pulses racing. Let’s hope we are all talking about the football at the end of the game this afternoon. After dropping points last Friday it is more important to get back on a run of wins and quickly. Our performance against Witham was good, but at this stage of the season and in the position we find ourselves in, it is all about the three points. That said, if we look after the performance we give ourselves the best possible chance of winning the game. We created over 20 chances against Witham and drew a blank. Chances fell to almost

04

everyone and composure, desire to score, luck and some decent defending saw us lose a game of football we could, and should have, comfortably won. We can’t dwell too long with plenty of fixtures to come, but it’s fair to say finishing has played big part in training this week! The fans got to see George Winn in his first game for us last week since signing from Hornchurch, and although not much to contend with, he made a solid start. Particularly when you consider that his last full game was back in November. There is also some good news on the injury front with Bryan Ifeanyi close to a return along with Chaynie Fage-Burgin, and even Kojo Awotwi made an appearance this week, albeit he remains a way off joining in with the boys. We are still waiting for the results of Martyn Stokes’ scan, but welcomed back into the squad tonight is Manny Martins, who will be a more permanent fixture now until the end of the season after the departure of Al-Amin. 11 games left, 33 points to play for and it starts again today and again on Tuesday against the front-runners Aveley. Please give the lads all your support, we going to need all of us on it! Come on you Jammers! Paul

TILBURY MALDON & TIPTREE

1 2

SATURDAY 26TH FEBRUARY | THE PITCHING IN ISTHMIAN LEAGUE NORTH | ATT: 195 Maldon & Tiptree produced a second half fightback away at Tilbury to seal all three points. For the first time in a long time, Paul Abrahams was able to name five substitutes on his bench, as the squad begins to return to full fitness ahead of the final games of the season. Chaynie Fage-Burgin, Harmeed Ishola and Martyn Stokes remained absent through injury, whilst Rob Lacey and George Winn both missed out on being in the matchday squad. It was the Jammers who started the brighter and had the first real opening of the game inside the opening exchanges. Olumide Olutwatimilehin broke down the right-hand side and found himself in acres of space, but his powerful cross-cum-shot evaded Scott Kemp at the far post and the ball sailed away for a goal kick. Oluwatimilehin was proving hot to handle for the home defence and created another opportunity shortly after. His dangerous cross in to the box bounced around before striking Ade Cole and narrowly going over the bar. At the other end, the hosts looked dangerous on occasions with Roman Campbell and exJammers striker Brian Moses providing a tough test for the Maldon defence.

06

MALDON & TIPTREE vs DEREHAM TOWN

In the 28th minute, MOSES returned to haunt his old side. As the ball fell kindly to the big man inside the penalty area, he took one touch before blasting the ball beyond Tommy Dixon-Hodge to give the Dockers the lead. Ahead of the interval, Maldon made attempts to get themselves back in the game without seriously testing Lamar Johnson in the home net. Cole created the best opportunity, however his cross took a deflection and narrowly evaded Kemp at the far post. On the stroke of the break, the Jammers had appeals for a penalty turned down, as it appeared Al-Amin Kazeem was fouled having entered the box, however the referee disagreed. After a mixed first half, with just perhaps the final pass missing, Maldon started the second half in command and soon had an equaliser. After regaining possession high up the field, Cole produced a pin-point through ball into path of OLUWATIMILEHIN who made no mistake, curling his composed strike beyond Johnson to draw his side level within five minutes of the break. Following the goal and what appeared to be a slight change of approach from Abrahams, Kemp was replaced by Shomari Barnwell, which was closely followed by Malachi Napa making his longawaited return from injury, replacing the goalscorer, Oluwatimilehin. The tactical change from Abrahams had the desired effect. With Napa finding pockets of space and Barnwell giving the defenders something to worry about, Lordon Akolbire broke well down the right-hand flank. The attacking-full back broke into penalty area, before cutting back to COLE on the edge of the box who made no mistake, unleashing a powerful effort into the bottom corner beyond Johnson who was left stranded. Having been behind at the break, the Jammers had deservedly got themselves in front midway through the second half, with Cole’s fourth strike in as many league games adding to his assist for the equalising goal. As Tilbury scrambled for an equaliser, they created a number of half-chances without really testing DixonHodge in the Maldon goal and perhaps lacked the final bit of quality in the final third, which on another day could have hurt the Jammers. Tilbury’s best opportunity was in the 87th minute, as Jordan Peart broke down the left, however his cross into a dangerous area was met by a Maldon defender who superbly cleared the danger.

Dereham Town Football Club was founded in 1884, spending many of its early years in the local Norwich District and the Dereham & District Leagues. During these early years, the club made its first appearance in the Norfolk Senior Cup final, when they lost to CEYMS, in 1891-92. Until 1965, the club played in the Norfolk and Suffolk League prior to the formation of the Anglian Combination. In that transitional season, Dereham town won the Senior ‘B’ Division. In 1988-89 Dereham Town were relegated from the Premier Division of the Anglian Combination, thus losing their proud record of being the only club to have never played outside the Premier Division since the league’s formation in 1965.

MALDON & TIPTREE vs DEREHAM TOWN

The following season, Premier Division status was regained when the Division One title was claimed. In 1993-94, the Senior Knockout Cup was won for the first time when Wymondham Town were comprehensively beaten 3-0 in the final. December 1996 saw the club move from its previous home on the council-owned Recreation Ground into the new site at Aldiss Park. The club’s first full season at Aldiss Park (1997/98) saw the dream become reality when Eastern Counties League status was achieved with the club winning a first Anglian Combination Premier Division title. Not content with just the league title, the club also won the Don Frost Memorial Cup.

The club’s opening season in Eastern Counties League football (1998/99) saw the club finish seventh in Division One and reach the inaugural Division One Knockout Cup final. The 2000/01 season saw the first team secure promotion to the Jewson Premier Division. For the third year in succession, the club received the Jewson Sportsmanship Trophy, along with the hospitality award and matchday programme award. A level of stability was then achieved by the club over the following season, with mid-table finishes being achieved. 2005/06 saw the first Norfolk Senior Cup win for the club overcoming norwich united in the Carrow Road final. The following season saw the Magpies’ best season to date, retaining the Norfolk Senior Cup and combining this with a sixth-placed finish in the Eastern Counties Premier Division. In March 2008 former Magpies player, Matt Henman, replaced Rob Taylor as manager after captain Adam Gusterson had briefly held the reins as caretaker manager. Fourth place in the league was achieved with victory over Mildenhall Town in the last match of last season. Season 2008-09 again saw a fourth-placed finish in the Ridgeons Premier Division, as well as a run to the fifth round of the FA Vase. After a couple of years of rebuilding, the season 2010-11 saw the Magpies as runners-up in the Ridgeons Premier League and winners of the Norfolk Senior Cup at Carrow Road, defeating a strong King’s Lynn Town side.

Season 2011-12 was relatively disappointing with the side finishing in midtable in the league, however, the younger sides continued to thrive and hopefully many of these players will be pushing for a first team place in the future. Season 2012-13 saw the Magpies achieve promotion by winning the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League Premier Division title and, with the necessary ground improvements in place, promotion to the Ryman League was achieved for the first time in the club’s history. After struggling to adapt to the physicality of the step up in the opening matches, the team picked up to finish seventh in their opening campaign. This was matched the following season, combining this with a good run in the FA Cup that only came to an end at Conference North outfit, Boston United. Another strong season in Ryman One North saw the Magpies end the 2015-16 season in ninth place. Again, a play-off place was briefly in view but eventually the side finished 12 points off of a fifth-placed finish. However, the season ended on a high when a 2-0 victory against Ryman Leaguebound Norwich United, at Carrow Road in May, secured the Norfolk Senior Cup for the fourth time in 10 years.

That season also saw a great achievement for the U18s who would go on to reach the second round of the FA Youth Cup, bowing out of the competition at Mansfield Town – losing 4-3 to an extra-time goal. On the way, Peterborough United’s U18ss were defeated 2-1 at Aldiss Park. In January 2019, following a run of poor results, manager Neal Simmons was replaced by former Magpies players Adam Gusterson and Olly Willis. The pair had jointlymanaged and taken Harleston Town from the Anglian Combination into Step 6 football, winning both league and cup on the way. The 2018-19 season did end on a high with an extra-time victory in the Norfolk Senior Cup final at Carrow Road, making it a fifth county title for the club. The 2019-20 season ended up being the season that never was, with the results and table expunged due to the covid-19 pandemic when the Magpies had been sat in ninth place following a steady season. The Norfolk Senior Cup final had also been reached for the second successive season, but was also later cancelled. The highlight of the season again came from U18s who reached the FA Youth Cup first round, losing out this time to Peterborough United 1-0 after extra-time. ADAM GUSTERSON

MALDON & TIPTREE

CLUB HISTORY

In 2009, Ed Garty took over the ownership of Maldon Town from Michael Kirkham, whilst still in charge of running Tiptree United and installed Alan Brockhouse as Maldon Town’s new chairman. Following the takeover, Colin Wallington returned for a second spell in charge of Maldon Town, leaving his post as Tiptree United manager immediately. Colin previously managed Maldon Town from 2003 until 2007, having achieved promotion in the 200506 via the play-off final. Having left Maldon in 2007, Colin went on to manage Tiptree United where he achieved promotion winning the

16

MALDON & TIPTREE vs DEREHAM TOWN

Eastern Counties Division One title in the 2007/08 season. Until the conclusion of the 2009/10 season both Maldon Town & Tiptree United played their home games at Park Drive, under a ground share arrangement. In the summer of 2010, Maldon Town & Tiptree United amalgamated to form, Maldon & Tiptree Football Club, under the ownership of Ed Garty. As a result of the amalgamation, Tiptree United withdrew from the Essex Senior League, resulting in the club’s last ever fixture being a 3-1 defeat against Enfield 1893 on 24 April 2010. Maldon & Tiptree took

the place of Maldon Town in the Isthmian Division One North. Following the retirement of Colin Wallington, Assistant Manager, Brad King and Glen Knight were appointed as the clubs JointManager. As the pair’s first managerial role, the new club witnessed wholesale changes with only a handful of players remaining who finished the season with Maldon Town and Tiptree United, respectively. The 2010-11 campaign saw the new club remain in or around the play-off positions for the majority of the season, finishing in eighth

place to finish the season with sixty-three points. Despite the high turnover of players, the good standard of football was maintained and it was in the end, a disappointing end to the season, for the club to fall away in the later stages of the season when suspensions and injuries eventually took their toll to leave the club frustratingly short of the play-off positions at the end of April. The 2011-12 season, proved to not be so successful and in November 2011, King and Knight were relieved of their duties with immediate effect. Ex-Charlton professional Mike Flanagan was appointed as Caretaker Manager and remained in place until the end of the season, steering the club to a respectful mid-table finish, managing thirty-three games and finishing with a win percentage of 49.12%. At the start of the 2012-13 campaign, Ex-Stansted & Redbridge boss Terry Spillane was appointed as Manager, and Mike Flanagan departed the club. The change of management, once again brought wholesale changes with the playing squad. Ex Tiptree United manager, Jody was brought to the club as Terry’s Assistant Manager. After a fantastic and unbeaten start to the season, the club found themselves at the top of the table but an incredible run by eventual Champions Grays Athletic meant Maldon had to settle for a place in the play-offs – Terry’s side remained unbeaten until Boxing Day, when they lost away from home against local rivals Heybridge Swifts. Disappointment came in the play-off final however when they lost a two goal lead to draw with Thamesmead Town, who thenwent on to win the final,on penalties.

After a disappointing end to the previous season, Terry Spillane oversaw more wholesale changes in the playing squad, including the departure of Assistant Manager, Jody Brown. Despite the changes, Maldon finished in ninth position with seventy-six points, winning twenty-one games. More changes to the playing staff, resulted in poor start to the 2014-15 season, and the club parted ways with Spillane in September 2014, with Chairman, Ed Garty takeover as Caretaker Manager, for three games. At the end of September 2014, Alan Kimble was appointed as manager and remained in charge for the remainder of the season, however the side struggled and more changes in the playing staff occurred. Maldon finished the season in nineteenth place with only forty-nine points. During the 2014-15 season, Media Officer at the time, Richard Buckby ran a competition for supporters to vote for a club nickname, with the options The River Boys, The Marshmen, The Mudmen and The Jammers available. The vote took place in January 2015 and was featured on National Radio station, TalkSport, with the The Jammers winning the vote with over 50% and being confirmed as the clubs new nickname. Following the completion of the 2014-15 season, the club linked with Colchester United and the two clubs formed close ties, which resulted in ex Ipswich Town midfielder, David Wright being appointed as First Team Manager. Wright remained in charge until December 2015 as he was appointed Assistant Manager of Colchester United. Liam Bailey took charge of the First Team on

a temporary basis, only managing one game, which finished four-all against Tilbury on Boxing Day in 2015. Moving into 2016, exLeiston Manager, Steve Ball was appointed First Team Manager and steered the club to a respectable finish in the league table climbing to seventh place, only missing out on the play-off places by nine points. In the closed season, a change of Management at Colchester United saw Steve Ball appointed as their Assistant Manager, leaving his position of Maldon & Tiptree Manager as a result. Ex-Manchester City midfielder, Kevin Horlock was then appointed as First Team manager ahead of the 2016-17 campaign and for the majority of the season, the Jammers sat at the top of the table before slipping away to finish in second place. Horlock’s side managed to reach the play-off final, however lost to Thurrock one-nil. The following campaign was not quite as successful for Horlock, with Maldon finishing just outside the play-off places in seventh place, with sixty-nine points. After managing 112 games, Kevin Horlock departed in the closed season and was replaced by ex-Colchester defender, Wayne Brown. In Brown’s first season in charge, the 2018-19 season, the Jammers finished in second place and reached the play-off final, but lost on penalties against local rivals, Heybridge Swifts. The 2019-20 season was one to remember for the club, but for the right and wrong reasons. The club achieved great things in the Emirates FA Cup. Having reached the First Round proper of the competition, Maldon beat League Two side, Leyton Orient away from home, taking over 600

fans to the home of The O’s, with the goals coming from Danny Parish and a superb solo goal from Jorome Slew. In the second round proper, Maldon were drawn against Football League side, Newport County with the game being shown live on National Television– with the Jammers only beaten by the League Two side, with a goal in stoppage time, with the game finishing 1-0. A record attendance of 1876 was recorded. However, the 2019-20 season will also be remembered for the wrong reasons. After impressive performances on the field, the Jammers found themselves top of the Isthmian Division One North, thirteen points clear with four games in hand, when disaster struck. With a global pandemic declared, as a result of Coronavirus, the league competition was formally abandoned on 26 March 2020, with all results from the season being expunged, and no promotion or relegation taking place to, from, or within the division. The club were denied a chance of promotion and forced to remain in the Division One North for the 2020-21 season.

ED GARTY STEPPED DOWN AS CHAIRMAN IN OCTOBER 2020 Following the disappointing end to the 2019-20 season, Wayne Brown remained in charge of the club and wholesale changes in the playing squad occurred again, with a number of the previous season’s squad securing transfers to clubs higher up the football pyramid. The Jammers were dealt a big blow in October 2020 when owner and Chairman Ed Garty stood down from his position with immediate effect, ending a challenging ten years at the helm. After a period of uncertainty for

the football club, General Manager Ron Dangerfield was confirmed as the new Chairman, with Richard Cowling taking ownership of the football club. Just like the 2019-20 season, the 2020-21 campaign was terminated with promotion and relegation denied for all the sides competing in the Division One North. However, prior to the curtailment the Jammers had reached the Emirates FA Cup First Round for the second successive season, this time losing to Morecambe 1-0 in front of the television cameras. Brown’s side also achieved their longest ever run in the Buildbase FA Trophy, eventually losing to Gloucester City. The Jammers were only able to play in five league games, finishing in third place before the season was curtailed. Heading in to the 2021/22 season, Wayne Brown remains in charge of the first team and is now the club’s longest-serving manager, holding the record for the most games managed in charge of Maldon & Tiptree Football Club.
