SHOW CHAIR & SECRETARY SHOW COMMITTEE REPORT

Hello and welcome back to the biggest event of the Essex Young Farmers’ diary. We are so glad to see so many of you back to support us after two years without a Show. The Show has been running for over 30 years and it continues to go from strength to strength. The Show is run purely by its hardworking committee members who range from 18-28 years old. All of our members are volunteers and take time out of their day jobs to help put on a great Show. We would not be able to put the Show together without our amazing members, subscribers, sponsors, VPs and everyone who has helped to make this show possible. We would like to say a massive thank you to the main Essex Young Farmers Show sponsor this year, Adcock Agri, and please make sure you have a look at their stand today. This will be our 13th year back at Boyton Hall in Roxwell and a massive thank you goes to Chris

ELLIE GEMMILL

PRESIDENT & COUNTY CHAIR

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORT Welcome all to the Essex Young Farmers Show. We missed you over the last couple of years, but we’re glad to be back!

prior to the event for setting up all the marquees and utilities etc., the Show is then dismantled and cleared away in only three days!

Young Farmers is such a brilliant organisation to be involved with and one that we are all very proud to be a part of.

A massive thank you goes the Philpot family for allowing the Young Farmers to use this fantastic site for their Show.

Both of us would like to thank all Young Farmers involved in the Show and offer a huge thank you for all of your hard work, it’s your efforts which make The Show a success.

Each week is packed with things to do, whether it’s a party, countryside events, competitions or just a meet up at the weekend. This is on top of weekly meetings organised by each of the ten clubs that make up the Essex Federation.

You may not be aware but this whole event is organised and run by Young Farmers aged between 16-28 years old, who all volunteer their time to create such an amazing Show whilst, along the way, gaining new skills, both practical and organisational. Each year a new Show Chair and committee is elected to help ensure fresh ideas keep coming through. This year Ben Cove from Chelmsford is in the driving seat with Amy Walker-Roy from Dunmow our Show Secretary. Although the Show takes about nine months to organise and the week

THIS WHOLE EVENT IS ORGANISED AND RUN BY YOUNG FARMERS AGED BETWEEN 16-28 YEARS OLD

You do not need to be a farmer to join Young Farmers, but just have an interest in the countryside. Go along to the ‘What is Young Farmers’ stand and they will have more information for you. To all our sponsors, without your help the Show wouldn’t be able to take place, so a sincere thank you! We both hope you have an enjoyable day. Jane & Ellie

COUNTY OFFICE

SHOW COMMITTEE REPORT JENNY MASKELL Hello, and a very warm welcome to Essex Young Farmers Country Show 2022, and to my first Show working for Essex Young Farmers! What a bizarre time we have had, but in true Essex Young Farmers style, we have managed to keep going and somehow increase our membership on the way. The Young Farmers’ year starts back in September with an Eastern Area Party getting all the members back together. This is followed by various clubs having firework nights before the build up to Christmas. In January, we joined with Rev Janet Nichols for a Plough Sunday service, followed by a Tractor Run and barbecue. The year has been full-on with parties, balls, training evenings and various competitions, including a monthly pub night at Whitbread’s with pool and darts. These are just some of the many events enjoyed by Essex Young Farmers throughout the year, plus everything arranged by our ten clubs across the county, of course. Make your way to

the YFC Exhibitions Hall to see some of the exhibits from our talented members, or pop into the ‘What is YFC?’ area, where members of Essex Young Farmers will be delighted to greet you and give you loads of info about this brilliant organisation and how you too can get involved if you wish. Don’t worry, we offer a Subscriber membership for those of us that are a year or two (I wish!) over the age of 28 where you can still be involved and find out what’s going on. The Young Farmers Show is put on by the members ranging from 16–28 years old, from the planning stage, to the clearing up and aftershow review meeting next month. Not only do they all have full-time jobs, they work hard to put this Show on as well. This year’s Show committee has been led by Ben Cove with Amy WalkerRoy not far behind him, plus a committed team behind them. I hope you have a great day and enjoy one of Essex’s best days out. We are all so glad to be back.

TRADESTANDS

SHOW COMMITTEE REPORT BEN SELL

G’day folks! I hope you’re all fine and dandy? Welcome to the EYF Show 2022! Isn’t it great to finally be able to reconvene at Boyton Hall after what feels like an age?! I’m very pleased to announce that there are over 100 tradestands in attendance this year, with everything from amusements and fine cuisine, to the latest and greatest agricultural machines... and, of course, the bar! Whatever your walk of life and interests, there’s plenty to see and do at this year’s Show, so do make sure you have a good look around and locate everything that there is to see. You don’t want to miss a thing! The layout is very similar to what it was at the last Show, with just a few fine tweaks to make life easier, so hopefully you’ll have no trouble finding all of the relevant areas. If you are struggling to find anything, refer to the pullout site map which is in the centre of this programme, or alternatively, there are plenty of Young Farmers on hand to point

you in the right direction, so don’t be afraid to ask them for help! I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of the tradestands here today for taking the time out of their busy schedules to come along and showcase their businesses. Without them, this certainly would be a very empty field of grass, so thank you for coming! Lastly, but by no means least, thank you to you guys! Not only for reading my waffle, but for making the effort to come out today and support the Show and Essex Young Farmers. I’ve been a member for over ten years, and this Show has by far been the hardest one yet! Having a break for two years because of that C word has made it tricky to get back on our feet, but I like to think that we’ve come back running! So I mean that… thank you! Very, very much! Take care and have a cracking day! Ben

EXHIBITION HALL

SHOW COMMITTEE REPORT ELLIE GEMMILL

This year at the Essex Young Farmers Show the Exhibition Hall will display each club’s entries to show off our members’ creative and practical skills. These range from cakedecorating, barbecue-making and creative bunting! This year we have a theme! We’ve combined it along with the Queen’s Jubilee so we have British bunting, celebration cakes and Union Jacks made from any material members wish to use. So please come and visit us to have a look at what

the members around the county have created! The competitions are judged by our subscribers on the day and are awarded club points based on placings and each entry made. These points go towards the competition table and some clubs get very competitive! We will also be holding our Made in the Farm workshop competition in our Exhibition Hall which was welcome to anyone who wanted to show off their handyman skills!

This competition showcases the innovative inventions and technical skills from our farming community. Maybe some of these designs will be factoryproduced one day! We would love to see you having a nosey around to see what has been created and produced, as a huge amount of time, effort and precision has gone into these final entries by our members and those associated with our community - see you there! TRACTION ENGINES

SHOW COMMITTEE REPORT HOWARD SMALLBONE Traction Engines have always been my passion, right from an early age I was fascinated by them. The smell, the noise and the sheer size of them. When I went to country fairs as a child, all I wanted was to see the Traction Engines, to find out how they worked and to speak with the people that ran them. I’ve been lucky to meet some very generous people along the way who have allowed me to help with their engines and have taught me all they

know. This year at the Young Farmers Show we have a fantastic selection of engines, ranging from full-size to miniature. If you see me, please feel free to ask me any questions you have as I would love to, in some way, inspire more children and adults to share my love for steam! Howard Smallbone

LIVESTOCK

SHOW COMMITTEE REPORT HAMISH BEATON Hello everyone and a warm welcome to the 2022 Essex Young Farmers Show. It is great to have you all back at the Show after two years of being locked down. However, while you have all been locked down, the UK’s livestock farmers have still been busy producing the meat, milk and wool which the country requires on a daily basis! We are pleased to report that we have cracking number of cattle and sheep entered into the shows this year as well as a children’s farm area which has alpacas, goats, piglets, rabbits and many more animals for the whole

DAISY JONES family to look at, so please come and pay us a visit during the day! This year, we are excited to announce we have a new class in the beef section which is a pairs class for exhibitors to take part in. As well as this, we also have our young handlers classes as normal for the beef and sheep sections. These are great classes to watch as they give the next generation of stock men and stock women a chance to show off their animal handling ability in the ring. We would both like to say a massive thank you to our judges who have kindly travelled far

and wide to judge the animals on the day. It is great to watch them judging as it is a real skill andsome of them will be giving the reasons for their winners after each class, so make sure you stop and listen in to what makes a champion show animal! We both hope everyone has a very enjoyable day at the Show. Please come and see all of the wonderful livestock the exhibitors have spent months, if not years, getting ready for the big day! All the best. Daisy and Hamish

SHOW COMMITTEE REPORT LOUISA KENNEY Hello and welcome to the Game Fair section of the Essex Young Farmers Show! This section of the Show is exhibiting all things countryside and we’ve got some interesting displays going on throughout the day!

DISPLAYS

Although it has been a busy time with the run up to the Show, it is good to be back after a break due to Covid-19. We have tried to include some new displays this year, along with the previous favourites for you to see.

New to the ring this year is a Gundog display. This shows the bond between handler and working breed of dog, to hunt and find game whilst out in the field together. It is situated on the edge of the Game Fair area and all proceeds go to charity, so it’s for a good cause and a bit of fun for you both! Can you say you’ve ever seen ducks being herded by dogs before?! If not, pop along to watch the infamous Dog and Duck Show. If you haven’t seen it at a country show before, it really is worth a watch and it’s sure to make you laugh!

EQUINE RING TIMETABLE 10:00-10:30 Hound display 10:35-11:20 JPL Shetland Racing 11:25-11:55 Essex police dogs 12:00-12:30 Pony club mount games 12:35-13:05 Dressage demonstration (to music) 13:10-13:40 JPL Shetland Racing 13:45-14:15 Essex police dogs 14:20-14:50 Pony club mount games

This year at the Essex Young Farmers Country Show we have five exciting acts to keep you entertained throughout the day. We have two of our favourite dog acts back this year in the equine ring: the police dogs and the foxhounds. We will see how different breeds of dogs can act in their natural environment, as well as how they are trained and interact with humans to do their jobs. Following on from this, we have JPL Shetland Racing where six riders and six Shetlands go head-to-head around a race track of jumps going as fast as they can to win the race! This will be a great one to watch as it really gets the crowd cheering for the children and ponies - the louder you cheer, the faster the ponies will go! So be sure to come along and show your support, you really won’t want to miss the fun! Following this, we will have the Pony Club. Three different pony clubs from our local area will compete in various mounted games. The top two teams from the first round will then compete head-to-head in a final later in the day. This will be a fun, furious and exciting performance. From the pony clubs, we go on to a dressage demonstration to music. The demonstration will consist of the horse and rider riding to music, while showing you all sorts of movements that the horse has been trained to do. Additionally, we will have registered farriers on site all day shoeing and demonstrating shoe making as well as being on hand for all of our equine performers. We cannot wait to see you all there and we hope you all enjoy the acts! Isabel x

WHAT IS YFC?

SHOW COMMITTEE REPORT ELLIE GEMMILL

SO, WHAT IS YOUNG FARMERS? Young Farmers is a local members club that provides you with lifelong friends, fantastic opportunities to further your skills in life and a social life you won’t be able to keep up with! Each club has a club night or meeting each week with varied activities such as farm tours, interesting talks and socials with different clubs from throughout the county. Each club tries to have at least one sit-down meeting a month to catch up with county events and competitions or other club events such as balls, harvest suppers and parties. We all have our own ‘stomping ground’ which mostly rely on a local pub! A Young Farmers season typically runs from the middle of September to the beginning of July so those

non-farmers can have a break and the farmers can crack on with harvest! However, we are primarily all charities. Each club will choose one or more charity every year to help via fundraising, and our county building tends to do the same. With no Show for the last two years, though, there has been an exception where county has been fundraising towards the Essex Young Farmers County Federation. Essex has won the National Young Farmers’ trophy for the most amount fundraised for charities back in 2017-18, so we’re hoping to win this back once we’re back on our feet and have dusted ourselves off! HOW TO JOIN? Check out our ‘What is YFC?’ stand here today at the Essex

Young Farmers Show. Each section of the county has a local club who are always happy to welcome new faces amongst their YFC family. If you don’t get a chance today, then have a look on our website where you can find all the contacts and information you need at your fingertips – www.essexyoungfarmers.com. WHAT IF I’M NOT A FARMER? This is not a requirement! Our motto is… you don’t have to be a farmer to be a Young Farmer! Everyone and anyone is welcome in Young Farmers, as long as you’re willing to be part of the team and family, then any club will welcome you with open arms! Rest assured you would never regret joining Young Farmers! Ellie Gemmill & Henry Tinney

LAWN MOWER RACING

SHOW COMMITTEE REPORT OLLIE WEAVERS

After two years behind barn doors, the racing lawn mowers are back at the Essex Young Farmers Show today! Young Farmers lawn mower racing runs under very similar rules to the British Lawn Mower Racing Association. This is where cutting decks are removed, then the mowers are tuned and streamlined for maximum performance. Some safety features are fitted, such as engine cut outs and safety guards. There are rules on modifications to keep the racing fair and still keep the mower principles. These fine race machines are all modified and looked after in farm workshops by Young Farmers and are raced by them too. The mower racing is a popular attraction in the main ring with its fair share of action and rivalry and, just like Vettle and Hamilton, it never fails to disappoint! With the pubs being shut last year, more mowers have arrived on the scene and after the Prelims shake down, the racing promises to be good. A massive thank you has to go to RC Borehams for sponsoring this event as you can imagine the insurance comes at a cost. Come along, choose your team and good luck drivers! Ollie

TUG OF WAR

SHOW COMMITTEE REPORT ANDY LOFTHOUSE After having missed the Prelims weekend for two years in a row due to Covid-19, this year’s event was long overdue and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who took part. Prelims is one of the most favoured events in the Young Farmers calendar and it’s all about having fun and working together as a team. Hello and welcome to this year’s Show. After two long years, Young Farmers tug of war is back. This is one of the most fiercely-fought competitions of the YF year. Training starts in the depths of winter, leading to the Prelims round and ultimately today’s Show competition.

Maldon YFC Boys

Clubs train in many different ways, from pulling a weighted barrel up and down a gantry, to stretching a tyre inner tube to within an inch of its life. Training sessions move up to twice a week between Prelims and Show, with the goal of

winning today and moving onto Eastern Area and even National competitions. Each team consists of eight pullers with a maximum weight for the boys’ team of 680kg and 580kg for the girls’ team.

Dunmow YFC Girls

Tug of war is a sport which is struggling in general but is still alive and well in Young Farmers. Some Essex YF pullers even represented England at the world finals held in Spain in 2021. So, get behind your favourite team and make some noise to cheer them on, it really does make a difference to them. Colchester YFC Boys

VINTAGE TRACTORS

SHOW COMMITTEE REPORT JEFFREY GIBLIN

A.J Giblin, pictured ploughing with a Fordson E27N P6 - Cockshutt No.6 Plough in October 1991

It is good to be back at the Young Farmers Show after two years without one because of Covid-19. I have 35 tractors entered, varying from a 1917 Fordson Model F, up to a Ford/County 1174 and International 1455. We also have a 1932 Caterpillar 10, a 1942 Caterpillar D2 and a D6. The tractors will go on parade at 9:45am in the main ring, with a full commentary. We will also have some barn engines on display of various different makes and sizes. These were used in days gone by, before electricity reached rural areas. They were used to drive milling machines to grind grain for animal feed as well as pump water up from wells I am sure any of the exhibitors will be pleased to talk to you should you wish to find out more! I hope you are all as excited as we are that the Essex Young Farmers Show is back! It has left a massive hole in the Young Farmers calendar over the last couple of years and I know that all of us members couldn’t wait to get stuck back into it! I can’t wait to welcome our subscribers and are pleased to offer you a buffet lunch which will be served to you by some of our members. www.essexgameguild.co.uk This is a long-established club promoting a love of countryside, wildlife, field sports and conservation in Essex. We aim to widen the appeal of countryside activities and help young people get into country pursuits and offer two key areas for support: • Mentoring or work experience for young people who wish to gain experience of the running of a shoot, a game farm, meat preparation or initial shooting tuition. Arranged with our members. • The “Futures Fund” provides support with the cost of a course or training in game preservation, conservation or land management. This could range from a meat hygiene course to a college course in gamekeeping. Find a course an apply for some help from us! (Applications will be considered by a panel and support offered on individual merits following interview.) We also hold two meets a year for members to learn more about our sport and how local organisations run their shoots. The summer meet visits an organisation such as a shoot and the Autumn meet consists of a talk by industry professionals.

FARMING THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

SHOW COMMITTEE REPORT WILL SPANTON-COATES

It’s great to be back here for the 2022 Essex Young Farmers Show!

IF YOU’VE EVER BEEN DRIVING PAST A FIELD AND WERE WONDERING WHAT WAS GOING ON THEN PLEASE COME ALONG TO THE MAIN RING AND HOPEFULLY WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO GIVE YOU AN INSIGHT

This year, as always, we have lots of shiny new kit to show off courtesy of local dealers and farmers. We will be parading around the main ring at 1:00pm and will hopefully give you an insight into the process of running an arable farm throughout the year, from the first steps of preparing the ground with cultivators at the end of harvest all the way through to harvesting the crop with a combine. If you’ve ever been driving past a field and were wondering what was going on then please come along to the main ring and hopefully we might be able to give you an insight into how the machinery is used and why! If you would like to see some of the machines up close or if you have any questions please come along to the stand where we will be happy to try and answer any questions. A big thank you must go to all the dealers and local farmers for lending the implements tractors and machinery for the display. There really is no better way to see the process of farming throughout the year than by coming to watch our display! We look forward to seeing you at the display and at the stand throughout the day. FIVE MINUTES WITH... BEN COVE

SHOW CHAIRMAN

EACH AREA HAS HAD SO MUCH HARD WORK PUT INTO IT AND THEY’RE SO ENJOYABLE IN DIFFERENT WAYS. TO SEE THE BEST OF THE SHOW, YOU REALLY HAVE TO LOOK ROUND ALL OF IT… BUT THE BAR IS USUALLY A GOOD PLACE TO START!

Let’s start off easy - tell us a little bit about yourself both inside and outside of Essex Young Farmers? Hi, I’m Ben and this year I am Show Chairman for the Essex Young Farmers Show. I work on a mixed farm down on the South Essex marshes, working with a mixture of cattle, sheep and arable. When did you become part of Essex Young Farmers? I first signed up to Young Farmers when I turned 16, and I’m now in my tenth year of being an Essex Young Farmer. What other roles have you held in Young Farmers? I have held a few roles in Young Farmers throughout my time. I was Club Chairman for Chelmsford in 2016 and have also been Countryside Rep at county level. I have held a few roles for Show, most notably as organiser of the Game Fair area (which is always worth a visit) before taking on the role of Show Chairman. What made you take on this role? After two years without a Show, despite the hard work put in by our previous Show Chairman Jack Bosworth and his team, I was delighted to be asked to take on this role. It is more important than ever to have a great Show and get the ball rolling for the future of the Essex Young Farmers Show after the absence. What is your favourite part of the Show? I could not put this down to one single area of the Show, each area has had so much hard work put into it and they’re so enjoyable in different ways. To see the best of the Show, you really have to look round all of it… but the bar is usually a good place to start! What should every visitor make sure they do today before they go home? Enjoying your day is the most important thing, and making the most of a Show that we have been waiting too long to be able to enjoy.

FIVE MINUTES WITH...

AMY WALKER-ROY

SHOW SECRETARY

NOT BEING ABLE TO PUT ON A SHOW FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS HAS BEEN REALLY TOUGH FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED IN THE SHOW SET UP. THERE IS ALWAYS A GREAT ATMOSPHERE DURING THE WEEK BEFORE SHOW AND EVERYONE IS ALWAYS SO EAGER TO HELP

Let’s start off easy - tell us a little bit about yourself both inside and outside of Essex Young Farmers? Hi, I’m Amy and I am this year’s Show Secretary for the Essex Young Farmers Show. I work at Samco, which is a buying and selling cooperative for its members. I met my partner through Young Farmers and we now live on his family farm. When did you become part of Essex Young Farmers? I joined Young Farmers when I was 16. I started by going to a party and a few meetings, then after that I was hooked! This will be my 12th year and I have loved every minute of it. What other roles have you held in Young Farmers? I have had a few positions within club and county level. At club level, I have been the meeting organiser, taken part in fundraising and I would write the magazine reports for Dunmow YFC. At county level, I was the Press Officer for three years. For the last three shows, I organised the festival food marquee and the horticultural area. Most recently, I am a co-op on the finance and general purpose committee, which I have done for the last three years. Then this year Ben asked me to be his Show Secretary as well.

What made you take on this role? Ben… all joking aside I have always wanted to be more involved with the show and when Ben asked me to be his Show Secretary I couldn’t say no. Not being able to put on a Show for the last two years has been really tough for everyone involved in the Show set-up. There is always a great atmosphere during the week before Show and everyone is always so eager to help. What is your favourite part of the Show? This is a really tricky one! I love the Show day, there is literally something for everyone. I would definitely check out all the ring timetables first and make sure that I wasn’t going to miss anything. Nothing should be missed this year as we have lots of great areas bursting with old and new exhibitors all eager to show off their skills. What should every visitor make sure they do today before they go home? The most important part of today is to have fun! If you need any help on the day then look out for a Young Farmer as we are all happy to assist you with whatever you need to make your day with us more enjoyable! If you do see me walking round the show today, make sure you come and say hi!

PRELIMS

SHOW COMMITTEE REPORT JESSIE FAULKNER After having missed the Prelims weekend for two years in a row due to Covid-19, this year’s was long overdue and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who took part. Prelims is one of the most favoured events in the Young Farmers calendar and it’s all about having fun and working together as a team. Our members both new and old had a fantastic Friday night partying away while we had DJ Steve Mayhem on the decks. Saturday saw many Essex Young Farmers members enjoying the point-topoint, all drinking lots of Pimms and pints! Despite the hangovers, there was a fantastic turnout for Prelims day on Sunday morning, with 115 members participating as well as new members signing up on the day! We had a variety of competitions such as post-bashing, blindfolded bale-stacking and apple-bobbing. Prelims day wouldn’t be able to go ahead without the wonderful judges we had to judge our competitions, so we are

hugely grateful for their help and support. We took our annual Essex YFC photo as seen here, followed by a barbecue for lunch. In the afternoon we had lawn mower racing, excellently organised by one of our Colchester members, Ollie Weavers. We had seven mowers all built and modified by the clubs participating, making for a very exciting race. All of the

spectators loved watching it, myself included! Lastly was tug of war, a classic and much-loved Young Farmers competition. Tug of war is a great competition to watch and is full of team spirit, anticipation and excitement. It really is one to watch! Overall, Prelims was an amazing weekend. The weekend would not have been such a great success without the fantastic team I had behind me, so a massive thank you goes to them. Seeing clubs out laughing and working together as a team in the sunshine is what it’s all about. Prelims certainly isn’t a day to be missed. I’m already excited for next year! Jessie

FUNDRAISING & ACTIVITIES

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORT

LUCY HITCHCOCK

Hi all, I hope you are all pleased to be back at the Show! Covid-19 has meant that activities and fundraising for YFC has been pretty redundant over the last two years. On April 2nd we brought back the very popular bi-annual Essex Young Farmers County Ball! We sold 420 tickets, making it our biggest ball yet. On the night, we held a raffle with all money raised going to the Farming Community Network (FCN) and RABI. We sold 6,500 raffle tickets and raised £2,500! I think everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening. It was so nice to see so many old and new faces back in the same room! A massive thank you must go to Ernest Does and New Holland for sponsoring the event. Without your generosity, the event certainly would not have been successful as it was! Lucy

COUNTRYSIDE

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORT OLLIE WEAVERS Countryside is a role where we organise events and competitions throughout the year that are based around farms and the countryside. Each club has a rep to keep their club informed and to help out. This year we have had a very successful stock-judging competition, with members both new and old attending and getting involved. Coming up we have a farm evaluation and fence-laying competition, whilst some members are also taking part in a two-day sheep-shearing course. Ollie

CHAPLAIN’S CHARTER

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORT They say “absence makes the heart grow fonder”. The Essex Young Farmers Show has always been held in great fondness. But after two years away, mere fondness has been replaced by eager anticipation and great excitement; and that’s just from your Agricultural Chaplain! As usual, I will be walking around the Show all day and am greatly looking forward to seeing everyone again. 22nd May 2022 has been etched in my diary for many months!

THE ESSEX YOUNG FARMERS SHOW INVITES US ALL TO PUT OUR EVERYDAY STRESSES ASIDE FOR A DAY AND A GREAT DAY OUT AWAITS ALL WHO COME ALONG

22nd May is also Rogation Sunday. For many years, I’ve led Rogation Services in churches and on farms in Essex. It’s a day when we pray for God’s blessing on the land and the emerging crops. There’s something special about pausing in the busy agricultural year to reflect on the goodness of the land and the potential of the crops to provide future sustenance and wellbeing. It’s a pause that allows God to whisper: “be blessed, not stressed”. It might be a mantra for the Young Farmers Show too! I’m full of praise for everyone who has worked tirelessly to get this year’s Show off the ground. It has taken a huge amount of commitment and perseverance. The Essex Young Farmers Show invites us all to put our everyday stresses aside for a day and a great day out awaits all who come along. I can’t help thinking it will be a time of blessing to thousands of people. So enjoy, have fun, renew old friendships and be blessed! Revd Canon Janet Nicholls Agricultural Chaplain jnicholls@chelmsford.anglican.org

P.S. A date for your diary. All are welcome to Chelmsford Cathedral on Sunday 25th September at 3:30pm to give thanks for our harvest. The Essex County Harvest Festival promises to be another great afternoon of celebration, followed by refreshments generously provided by Ceres Rural.

COMPETITIONS

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE REPORT JAMIE MITCHELL We have had a busy start to 2022 trying to make sure we can get as much in as possible, as we have missed out on so many events in recent years. We kicked January off with dodgeball which was held at Writtle College. There was a great turnout with a total of five teams taking part, and congratulations to Colchester for taking first place. In preparation of the public speaking competition we held a ‘just a minute’ fun session to give people an insight of what public speaking is all about. This led onto the proper competition which was held on February 20th. It was a challenging start to the day due to storm Eunice taking the electricity out of the county

building, but in the usual Young Farmers spirit, we powered on! Well done to Ongar for taking first place in after-dinner speaking.

ESSEX YOUNG FARMERS 2022 SHOW

I decided to try something new and hold a mixed football competition on a Friday night. This was a very well-attended event which had very positive feedback. We then had our Prelims day which is always a great day. A huge well done to Jessie who made the day run really well. The lawn mower racing was as exciting as ever with Ben from Southminster shearing off his front axle, and wheels being lifted going around the corner by Jim from Colchester. The tug of war was as competitive as ever with a fight out between Maldon and Colchester. Well done Colchester on taking the victory

The team at the Christmas tree collection

Hi everyone. I hope you are all well, spring is finally upon us! In the first weekend of January, Ashdon and Saffron Walden Young Farmers Club held their annual Christmas tree collection. Our members set out in their numbers to help collect a massive 600 trees which had all been pre-booked in from Saffron Walden and surrounding villages. We also had help from ambassadors from the charity MENCAP. It is my pleasure to

announce that we have broken our annual record and raised a massive £5,600! This will be split between FCN and MENCAP. A huge thank you for another fantastic year to all of our drivers and collectors - it could not be possible without you! Other activities so far this year have included a cinema trip, pub socials, a lambing tour and a talk from MENCAP who are one of our chosen charities. Coming up in the social calendar we have our club efficiency, a

joint-tour with Dunmow around Little Linton Farms and a tour around Tuckwell’s, so there’s lots to look forward to if any new members fancy joining us! A lot of Ash & Saff members will be helping out at the longawaited return of the Essex Young Farmers County Show today, so please come and say hello if you see us - we would love to introduce ourselves! We can’t wait to see you all. Lucy x

BRENTWOOD

YF CLUB REPORT

JOE ANDREWARTHA Brentwood and District Young Farmers covers one of the largest areas among the clubs making up Essex Young Farmers as a county, stretching from Brentwood right the way across to cover Basildon, Billericay, Southend and anywhere in between. Because we have such a large area it offers us a great variety of potential activities and trips out. It may mean that at times our members could have to travel a little further to our meets if they live at the extremities of our catchment area, however we ensure that every week our Monday night meets are well worth the trip! We like to keep these varied with recent Mondays having taken us to a talk at the New Holland tractor plant in Basildon with the chance to try driving their new gas-powered tractor, a tour of a local vineyard, an Easter egg hunt on a local farm and a car treasure hunt, along with pub socials and a few meals out in between.

Some of the recent activities the Brentwood club have enjoyed

60

The Brentwood Young Farmers life doesn’t end with the Monday night activities. We like to make sure we get as many of our members as we can along to any competitions and parties, club or county-run. These are always guaranteed to be a good night and are a great way to meet

ESSEX YOUNG FARMERS 2022 SHOW

other members from around the county. Despite the Young Farmers name, you really don’t have to be a farmer or even have any involvement with the farming industry to be a member. As long as you don’t mind the outdoors it really is the perfect social life! At Brentwood, we have a club made up from people of all walks of life including uni students, the farming, equine and construction industries, as well as the occasional London office workers! Because we have so many members who aren’t quite so tied up over the summer harvest months, we don’t tend to stop our meets over the summer like many other clubs do, meaning we get to make the most of the nice weather! As someone who has been a member for seven years and counting, I personally cannot say enough what a fantastic social life Young Farmers is and what a shame it would be for anyone considering joining to miss out on it! Whichever club in the county you join, you are guaranteed to make friends for life. If you have any questions about our club or would like to enquire about coming along to our upcoming programme, then please don’t hesitate to contact our Chairman, Joe on 07585 610403.

DAN LOW Hi all, I hope everyone is enjoying the 2022 Young Farmers Show and that the sun is hopefully beaming down on you! Chelmsford Young Farmers is a well-established club within Essex and has been going now for well over 75 years! With members from all over the Chelmsford area from all different walks of life, we are all keen to get stuck in and most importantly have a good laugh! After having a really tough three years due to Covid-19, Chelmsford really has made a comeback in a big way this year! Going from a meagre three members at the start of the year to now being well on the way to having 20 members which is something as a Chairman I’m immensely proud of! Hats off to all of our members this year for really pulling together and making it such a fantastic year! We’ve had a really broad range of meetings throughout this Young Farmers year, with anything from tractor driving to brewery tours, right down to a good old catch up at the Rose and Crown! We’ve tried to support a lot of local businesses both agricultural and non-agricultural alike, and the members have certainly enjoyed it and hopefully learned a thing or two as well! We’ve definitely made our presence known at a few of the competitions throughout this year as well having

which was an absolute cracker of a night to cut loose and finally get back to some kind of normality post-covid.

come in joint-first place at the stock-judging event, as well as picking up a few points at the darts and pool evenings at county! As well as the competitions, we’re never far away from the dance floor at the parties throughout the year and we’re never short of a few embarrassing stories on the following Tuesday! We also managed to get threee tables up for this year’s County Ball

If our current streak keeps up the only place the club is going in the next year is up, and it never fails to amaze me the amount of dedication our members put in. It’s definitely a very proud time for me as the Chairman to see the club going from strength to strength which has certainly been the highlight of my year. Hopefully we will enjoy much of the same in the next Young Farmers year, too! I hope everyone has a great day at the Show and we’ll catch you on the next one. Ciao for now! Dan x

COLCHESTER

YF CLUB REPORT

ERIN THOMAS Hey everyone, it’s finally SHOW TIME! Well, what can I say… Colchester has grown unbelievably as a club, with nearly 50 signed-up members - even with a global pandemic doing its best to put a stop to our fun! It’s safe to say this is the most members we’ve had in a long time, and we cannot thank everyone enough for the support. I will get straight in and highlight some of the best events from the past few years. To start off, I must blow our own trumpet as, at the end of 2021, we won not only County Club of the Month, but Eastern Area and National Club of the Month too! Huge congratulations to Ollie Weavers and his committee for navigating us through an extremely tough couple of years full of Zoom calls and quizzes to become a stronger club.

going strong. Our girls’ team has improved hugely too, with a full team training twice a week alongside the boys. Both teams won every single end at the recent County Prelims competition… not to mention we won Prelims overall again this year, following on from our success in 2019.

Tug of war has been a huge success over the last few years. Our boys’ team got through to Nationals in 2021 and are still

Our Road Run in 2020 was absolutely fantastic! We invited every type of vehicle you could imagine, from tractors and lorries

to vintage cars and motorcycles. The support from the roadside during the route was incredible. Thanks to Robert Davidson & Sons and G & J Barron for letting us use their premises throughout the day. In terms of fundraising, we had one of our best Muck Run events in a long time in 2021, raising over £1,000 for charity. Our fireworks night at the end of 2021 also proved to be one of our most successful. Thanks to Guy and Emily French for letting us use their farm to host. We started running a village ‘Tractor Sleigh Ride’ over the Christmas period of 2020, which involved us travelling round Great Tey on a tractor and trailer with Santa on board visiting all the children (and adults!) from the village. Our Christmas tree sale and collection began in 2020 and we continued it again in 2021.

Awards galore!

Our 2021-22 Chairman, George, attended Doucecroft Special Education School in Colchester on Thursday 10th March, to bring the Young Farmers Show to them. We know they will all treasure their excitement of seeing a huge combine, tractors and even sheep on their playing field! Most recently, we hosted Honiton YFC for another exchange weekend in March. It was great to meet Young Farmers from a different part of the world and learn how they run their club. We attended an Essex YFC party, had a fabulous tour round Allens Farm Partners (thanks to Will Lochore for this) and then finished the weekend off with a lovely meal at the Swan Inn, Chappel, before heading into Colchester town for a few more drinks! We can’t wait to head down to them later in the year. On Saturday 2nd July 2022 we have our 75th Anniversary Ball,

which is set to be a huge night. We’ve sold 36 tables meaning 360 attendees, ranging from current members, ex-members, ex-chairmen, local farmers and many more. We cannot wait to celebrate the special evening with everyone who has or has had a relationship with the club. We are still after more table and raffle sponsors though, so get in touch if you are interested. If you are keen to be a part of our club involved and get in touch with our new members reps or George directly. You can also find us on Facebook and Instagram and if you, or anyone you know, would like to join us as a member or as a subscriber… we welcome anyone and everyone! I have so much more to say, but have run out of space! So, that’s all for now, thanks for reading and enjoy the Show! Erin xx

DUNMOW

YF CLUB REPORT SOPHIE Hey everyone! It’s been a crazy two years since the last Young Farmers Show. In 2020 to 2021, whilst in and out of lockdowns, Dunmow still managed to keep up the club spirit with the loo roll challenge featuring many members - and even horses! Dunmow also did an amazing 5k run, raising money to support the NHS and everything they do. Well done to everyone involved and for keeping the Dunmow spirit alive. At the beginning of the year, we had an interesting tour around SRC, and they have very kindly decided to sponsor Dunmow this year. A big thank you to SRC for generously sponsoring and facilitating Dunmow Young Farmers, it is appreciated by everyone! As things were returning to normal in 2021, Dunmow have achieved many amazing things over the year such as running the bar as Dunmow does best at the Countess of Warwick Show. Dunmow also had their annual harvest supper in October, joint with Ash & Saff, which was enjoyed by everyone old and new. Over the Christmas period, Dunmow YFC enjoyed fabulous events such as stewarding at Dunmow Christmas market (despite the awful weather!) and our annual Christmas meal which we held at the Compasses this year. What a celebration it was! We also raised £1,813 for Jasmine Kenny’s Charity for British Army Mental Health from our Christmas tree collection. Going into 2022, Dunmow held their annual Valentines party, with the theme of Après Ski and over 150 people in attendance. We have also taken part in many competitions such as hockey where we came second, tug of war at Prelims where we again came second, and many other competitions; it’s the taking part that counts! This afternoon, Dunmow are looking forward to running the bar at the Young farmers Show and also getting back on the rope to pull at Show. If you would like to get involved with Dunmow Young Farmers please check our Facebook page or give our lovely chairman Isla a message on 07584 676656.

For some of us, our roots are very much in the countryside, but we are a pretty diverse club and welcome members from all walks of life – after all, “you don’t need to be a farmer, to be a Young Farmer!”. Friendly, welcoming and always up for a good social, Halstead Young Farmers is one of the most active clubs across Essex and always puts up a good show on the competition front too (especially in hockey, public speaking and tug of war, where our record across the latter is particularly strong for both the girls’ and boys’ teams). It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the last few years, which not only saw our usual club meetings, social activities, competitions and charity efforts take very different forms, but also heavily impacted our local communities. Together, our members offered support and help to those affected and truly did Halstead Young Farmers Club proud. Not only did we supply care packages to vulnerable individuals throughout the pandemic but also raised money for NHS workers in North Essex through our virtual Essex Coastline Challenge. Charity fundraising has continued to be a big part of Halstead this

year with multiple activities providing support for our chosen charity of 2022, Home Start.

we’re not out and about we can usually be found on a Monday night at The Bell in Castle Hedingham.

As we start to enjoy a more normal approach to life, our weekly socials have included a pretty broad range of activities including bouldering and escaping from escape rooms. We do like keeping busy, but when

And of course, we’ve been enjoying getting back together with other clubs from Essex. We teamed up with Wix Young Farmers for Prelims most recently, which was great fun. We can’t wait to welcome you to this year’s Essex Young Farmers Show, which has been sorely missed by us all over the last few years – keep an eye out for our own Archie Meadows in the mower racing, too!

Our girls team won the Show tug of war in 2019!

MALDON

YF CLUB REPORT KATIE GOFF Maldon Young Farmers has been going strong for 78 years and still remains to be one of the most social clubs in the county. Members come from an array of backgrounds, from agriculture and equine, to education and emergency services. There really is a mix and just goes to show that you don’t have to be a farmer to be a Young Farmer, all are welcomed! As mentioned, we are an incredibly sociable club, and can most commonly be seen in our local pub, The Swan in Little Totham, both on our weekly Tuesday club nights and also going into the weekends. Our club nights don’t just incorporate a social but are used for a variety of different activities. This year alone, the club has been involved in a diverse range of meetings such as top golf, adrenaline-fuelled car

treasure hunts and axe-throwing, to lambing demonstrations and interactive talks. There really is a meeting for everyone! There is no doubt that we have quite the enthusiasm when it comes to county competitions. Irrespective of where we place,

we always know how to have a good laugh. From public speaking to dodgeball and rugby, we truly know how to get stuck in! We also placed a very respectable second in the most recent Prelims day event. Maldon showed that you can in fact fit 14 people in a potato crate (information you probably didn’t think you needed but, now you know!). Our club is typically renowned for our annual charity events, which this year has been in aid of our chosen charity Crohns and Colitis. Just to briefly touch on what events have happened so far… our public fireworks display proved to be a huge success, raising an outstanding £1,300 and with a fantastic turnout of over 500 people. Christmas tree selling, again, raised a whopping £2,000 and our clay shoot would have just been and gone before this

ONGAR

YF CLUB REPORT HANNAH GILES After a bizarre couple of years for everyone, Ongar Young Farmers have had to adapt to any circumstance given, as have all of Essex’s clubs. Despite this, as a club we have, if anything, became a stronger team than ever in these tough times! Ongar Young Farmers are never shy of a challenge and this can be seen throughout our past competition history. The bizarre times of lockdowns and social media challenges did not stop us and April 2020 saw all members both furry, shelled and human take part in the loo roll challenge. Not only was this great amusement for us as a club, seeing multiple shares throughout the local community was something we all agreed was satisfying and that in bleak times, despite the difficult circumstances we faced, we were able to contribute to brightening life slightly in the local area through simply a phone! Life of Young Farmers is getting back to normal and, despite it being slightly stop-start for a while, it was a huge relief for many members. Tuesday nights for many are often a chance to step off the never-ending treadmill of work and a chance to socialise and be with friends. Club nights when possible consisted of the likes of bingo night and quizzes during Covid-19. The end of last summer however was a chance to have a long-awaited raft building session which was thoroughly enjoyed by all!

ESSEX YOUNG FARMERS 2022 SHOW

Charity events are something Ongar Young Farmers are always proud to host. One notable evening during 2021 for both us as a club and Ongar as a community was our fireworks night with over 500 in attendance. The praise within local Facebook groups, when behind the scenes so much organisation and generosity is needed, is one of the many reasons why we hold such events. It was also a brilliant chance to raise money for a great cause. The end of last year saw us generate a string of competition successes and Ongar YF was beginning to feel back to where we once were as a club preCovid. The end of February saw us participate in the senior public speaking challenge, of which this year’s theme was after-dinner speaking. Members James Padfield, Charlotte Pegrum, Jonathan Hockley, Emily Jerram and Henry Tinney went on to win the public speaking competition, leading to us even more successes in the Public Speaking Eastern Area Comp coming home

in a fantastic second place. It was a great boost for the club’s competitions after ending last year on such a high. More recently, Ongar’s successes included winning multiple awards at the county AGM, smashing the hockey competitions by winning all four matches and despite the lack of a tug of war team, placing in an honourable third place at Prelims in April.

2022 is a huge year for Ongar Young Farmers after recently celebrating our 80th Anniversary at Down Hall in March. The event was a huge success and saw 170 both familiar and new faces from the club reunite. As a club, we are always pleased to see new faces join our YF family! We are a mix of boys and girls ranging from 16-28 and not all from a farming background. We meet every Tuesday night and, if no activity is in place, just having a sit down and a laugh over dinner in the local pub is just one of the many things we do for fun with new faces always being welcome. Young Farmers not only gives you friends for life but valuable skills that you can carry with you further into adulthood, whether it be public speaking challenges giving you the skills to present ideas at work or being able to mix with a variety of people from all backgrounds and professions. If you’d like to join Ongar Young Farmers after reading this, please feel free to call or message Ellie Jemmett on 07985 245454 or get in touch via our social media. Hannah and Emma x

SOUTHMINSTER

YF CLUB REPORT

JACK GARWOOD Well hello. Firstly I hope you are all enjoying our little show and that the weather is holding out. If not, I hope you brought or have bought a coat! Whatever the weather, I hope you have a lovely time looking round the Show and its hundred or so stands. So, Southminster Young Farmers! We are a group of young people (not just farmers) who enjoy getting out and about in the countryside and having a laugh. We generally reside in the Dengie peninsular and the surrounding areas, though we do also love to venture out and about too. We are a relatively small club but we don’t let that hold us back - we recently came fourth at the Essex Young Farmers Prelims day (think school sports day with less

athletics!). We also like to make our presence known at social events by making the most of every party that other clubs and Essex have to offer. During the week we have a fun and varied programme of activities including tours of local businesses, be it agricultural or otherwise. As well as tours, we invite guest speakers to speak about any number of topics, including charities that we have

recently raised money for. Then when the serious business has been attended to we also love to go on walk dogs, trampolining, go-carting and anything else the members fancy getting up to. If you or someone you know might be interested in joining Southminster Young Farmers then don’t hesitate to get in contact. You can call or message Issy on 07814 166028 or email southminsteryfc@gmail.com. Alternatively, keep an eye out for us on the showground, we are the ones running around in burgundy tops with a gold logo. We look forward to seeing you soon.

WIX

YF CLUB REPORT JAMES FOXON Well hello, and I hope that you are enjoying/have enjoyed the Essex Young Farmers Show. There is much much more to Young Farmers than you saw today! Here at Wix Young Farmers we’re extremely busy throughout the year with all our socials, club meetings, talks, tours and, of course, fundraising events. As one of the largest clubs in the county we have a wide and diverse range of members from all walks of life, truly showing that you don’t need to be a farmer to be a Young Farmer. In the last two years since the previous Essex Young Farmers Show, Wix have been extremely active despite all of the challenges that have presented themselves. We have been able to hold various fundraising efforts, such as Christmas tree collections which this year raised £916.70 to our Ukraine donation appeal where we filled a van with aid supplies in one night. Each year we also have a selection of charities, as chosen by our members, and this year we are supporting Essex and Herts Air Ambulance, Parkinsons UK and Yellow Wellies. As a club, a major part of our fundraising efforts come from our two main events, our Spring Ball black tie dinner and our free booze party.

74

In between all our major fundraising efforts we do manage to find time for ourselves weekly with club meetings held on Thursday evenings where we do a variety of entertaining and enlightening activities. Recently we have had a tour of Stourgarden onion processing plant, a talk from a metropolitan police dog handler, as well as

sports nights such as dodgeball, rock climbing and football. If you would like to know any more about joining Wix Young Farmers then please contact either our club secretary Tamsin Sprawling on 07812 682835, or reach out to us on our socials. Hope to see some of you soon, James!
