THE FIRST SIGNS OF SPRING
Spring fever signals a return to warmer days
I’ve caught the fever one too many times, so I recognize the early warning signs. It starts with daydreaming. One moment, you’re waiting in line for an open selfcheckout, and the next, you’re thinking about clearing out the shed to make space for a new boat or an e-bike. At least, I hope that’s not just me.
The second symptom is quick to follow the first. I begin leaving chicken-scratch notes to myself on junk mail about picking up seeds, as well as other odds and ends that will help me complete those projects I’ve been putting off, such as staining the front deck for an extra layer of weather protection, or replacing the siding.
The third sign is where I realize it is too late. I slip on sneakers instead of snow boots, and reach for the hoodie instead of a jacket to take out the trash.
Alas, spring fever is contagious, too. Once I believe I’ve contained it, I see a cyclist training for the Iron Horse, and a smile stretches across my face. As flowers bloom and the water level rises, so does my desire to make the most of every day.
