~ INTERIOR DESIGN ~ Shop sustainable decor without sticker shock
by Connie Byers
THERE’S NO BETTER WAY TO STRETCH YOUR DECORATING DOLLAR and make your home unique than by decorating with thrifted finds. Plus, it’s an excellent way to shop sustainably and repurpose items to give them new life. Whether shopping at local antique shops, consignment stores, flea markets, estate sales or garage sales, consider these tips when thrifting.
Establish A Budget
Garage sales, flea markets and thrift stores are the best place to find rock-bottom prices. But it’s easy to nickel and dime your way to an empty wallet. Before heading out, establish a budget and stick to it.
Make A Plan And Be Prepared
Decide in advance what you’re looking for and how much you’re willing to spend on each piece.
It’s easy to get off track and forget what you came for when you happen upon a sale with tons of options.
On the other hand, you never know when you’ll happen upon a treasure. Keep a tape measure, bungee cords, and an old towel or blanket in the trunk of your car. That way, when you spot the perfect piece, you’ll be able to determine whether it is right for your space, and you’ll have the means to secure it for transport.
DON’T HESITATE
When you spot something you love while thrifting, don’t hesitate to purchase it. Part of the charm and beauty of these items is that they are often extraordinary and one-of-a-kind. Hesitating could mean losing the item. If you want something but can’t take it with you immediately, ask if it can be held while you secure transportation for the item, rather than waiting to purchase it.
Get The Best Deal
Thrift and antique shops rarely welcome haggling, but most garage sales, estate sales, and even flea market vendors won’t hesitate to make a deal. Beyond that, one of the best ways to determine if you’re getting a good deal is to look online for similar items to get an idea of what they sell for.
Think Outside The Box
It’s easier to spot the diamond in the rough when you let your imagination run free. Keep a repurposing mindset when thrifting. Consider ways to use an item beyond its original purpose. A vintage colander as a light fixture? An old headboard as a garden gate? How about an old dresser as a kitchen island? Hop over to Pinterest for some great repurposing inspiration!
Know When To Pass On A Project
Chances are that most things won’t be in pristine condition. Many secondhand pieces need minor cosmetic help to bring out their beauty. Others will be beyond repair and ready for recycling. Pass up anything that is missing a vital component, has severe damage or a strong odor. Know your limits when it comes to transforming old treasures into modern decor. Affiliate Companies:
