Message from the Director

Stepping into the role of Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Durango has been both exhilarating and challenging. The initial months encompassed a whirlwind of learning and familiarizing myself with the intricacies of a new hometown, the department, city leadership and operational style, while identifying specific needs of the community. My time has centered around understanding existing recreational programs and cultural events, assessing the condition of our facilities, parks, and trails, and building relationships with staff, stakeholders, and local organizations. Each day has presented new opportunities to make a positive impact, from improving internal communication and business operations, supporting park management strategies and capital projects, to exploring the expansion of recreational and cultural events/programs that cater to diverse interests, varied age groups, and evoke a further celebration of the Durango lifestyle and culture.

Some of my key early tasks involved participating in the city’s 2024 strategic planning process as well as reflecting on areas needing attention identified by department staff in the City’s 2024 Employee Satisfaction Survey. This has involved analyzing current resources, understanding past trajectory, confirming identified improvement needs, and addressing over time. Juggling budget constraints while trying to innovate and enhance services is always a challenge to creatively navigate. Effective communication and listening have been crucial to positive outcomes to date. Engaging with the community to understand their needs and expectations, and then translating that feedback into actionable prioritized plans has been and will continue to be the department’s ongoing goal.

As our first year together progresses, I’m hopeful you will continue to see the dedication of the Parks & Recreation team’s collective passion and labor. Successfully launching new programs and amenities or revitalizing existing ones brings a sense of accomplishment and sets a solid foundation for future initiatives. Celebrating small victories, like a well-attended community event, a well-managed project completed with an enthusiastic ribbon cutting, beautiful flower baskets adorning city streets and businesses, a thriving community recreation center, public parks meticulously maintained, or positive feedback from park users, recreation center patrons, and city colleagues, helps build momentum and reinforces the value of the department’s role and my passion for leading. Balancing immediate operational demands with long-term strategic planning becomes a routine, and with each challenge overcome, we grow more adept at steering and supporting an engaged team of Parks and Recreation professionals toward a thriving, community-centered future. I’m looking forward to the fall and winter months in Durango, ushering in 2025 together, and for what awaits us down the trail.

Thank You Durango!

Over the last twenty years, Durango visitors along with residents have dedicated an additional half of a penny on goods sales tax to invest back into the community. A quarter of that penny is committed to parkland acquisition and development, open space acquisition and conservation, water access, and projects like Durango Mesa Park and SMART 160 Trail. The other quarter of the half cent supports identified community improvement projects.

In November 2024, residents will have the opportunity to vote once again on reauthorizing the existing sales tax. Below is a snapshot of projects that have been accomplished with the funds allocated from sales tax as well as a sampling of projects slated to benefit from the fund.

Anticipated projects include:

• Continued development of Durango Mesa Park

• Land Acquisition

• Open Space Maintenance and Fire Mitigation

• Support Trail Building efforts of Durango Trails

• Fund Parks, Trails, and Recreation Improvements

Please scan the QR code to gain access to the expanded information on the website for further details.

In 2005 the residents of Durango approved a sales tax that dedicated half of a cent for every dollar spent in the city be split equally between the preservation, acquisition, and maintenance of natural lands, and capital improvements projects.

Since 2005 the sales tax has been used to help fund several projects including building the Durango Public Library, rebuilding Florida Road, and improving bicycle and pedestrian safety throughout Durango. Money from the tax also allowed the city to purchase Dalla Mountain Park, preserve Overend Mountain Park, the Cliff Rock parcel, land in Horse Gulch, develop the Smith Sports Complex and Durango Softball Complex at Fort Lewis College, and Durango Mesa Park.

If passed, the sales tax reauthorization would continue to fund future parks, open spaces, and trails projects for Durango Parks and Recreation.

Parent Tot Aquatics 6 mo - 4 years

Parent Tot Aquatics is designed to familiarize young children with the water and prepares them to learn to swim. It is not designed to teach children to become good swimmers or to survive in the water on their own. Parent Tot aquatics gives parents safety information and teaches techniques to help orient their children to the water. Designed to provide direction regarding supervision of water activities in a responsible manner.

Parent Tot

Ages 6 months to 4 years. This class lays a foundation for basic swimming skills. Parent participation in the water is required. Parents are taught to safely work with their child in the water, how to support and hold their child and to encourage the child to participate and try each skill. Water safety topics will be introduced to the parents.

Preschool Aquatics 4 - 5 years

The primary objective of Preschool Aquatics is to promote the development of fundamental water safety and aquatic skills. In this program, children learn the basics in a fun and non-threatening environment. It is not uncommon for students to repeat a level until they are able to demonstrate all the requirements for that level.

Level Description

Preschool 1

Preschool 2

Preschool 3

Advanced Preschool

Children learn the most elementary aquatic skills, which they continue to build on as they progress through the Preschool Aquatics and the Learn-To-Swim levels. At this level, children start developing good attitudes and safe practices around the water.

The objectives are to build on the basic aquatics skills learned in Level 1 and to give children further success with fundamental skills performed at a slightly more advanced degree than Level 1. Most skills at this level are performed with assistance. This level marks the beginning of independent locomotion skills.

This level builds on skills learned by providing additional guided practice of basic skills at a more proficient level and at greater distances. Children improve coordination by combining arm and leg actions independently.

This level is for 4 - 5 year olds who have already completed Preschool Levels 1 - 3 and are not old enough for Learn to Swim classes. Children will continue to build all skills learned in previous classes.

Learn to Swim 6 years & Up

Learn-To-Swim teaches aquatic and personal water safety skills in a logical progression. Throughout the levels, participants build on their basic skills to learn various propulsive movements on their front, back, and side. As the levels increase, participants learn to refine the different strokes and build endurance. Each level includes an exit skills assessment that combines many of the skills learned in the level.

Level Description

Learn-toSwim 1

Learn-toSwim 2

Learn-toSwim 3

Learn-toSwim 4

The objectives are to learn basic personal water safety information and skills, to help children feel comfortable and to enjoy the water. At this level, children learn elementary aquatic skills, safe swimming habits and positive attitudes about the water.

The objective is to give participants success with fundamental skills. Children learn to float without support and to recover to a vertical position. This level marks the beginning of true simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back.

Children learn the survival float as well as the front crawl and elementary backstroke. This level introduces children to scissor and dolphin kicks and builds on the fundamentals of treading water and diving.

The objectives are to develop participants’ confidence in the strokes previously learned and increase their endurance while furthering skills. Participants start to learn the back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, sidestroke and basic turning at a wall.

Private Swim Lessons

Private swimming lessons are an excellent choice for swimmers of all ages who want more personalized attention or have a particular problem with a stroke. Private lessons are great for review and can aid in quicker student progression. To sign up for a private swim lesson, fill out the swim lesson request form at DurangoCO.Gov/aquatics.

Private 1/2 hour lesson is $35, and a Semi Private 1/2 hour lesson is $18 per person for 2 people.
